Family grateful to ZFD for ‘Christmas miracle’

A Zionsville family celebrated a “Christmas miracle” after neighbors, the Zionsville Fire Dept. and even Santa Claus rushed public safety to the scene of a medical emergency.

Aaron and Joleen Haskell and their son, Henry, 3, were waiting to see Santa ride atop a fire truck through their Fieldstone neighborhood Dec. 12 when cold temperatures compelled Aaron Haskell to get his car for the family to sit in to avoid the wind. As he pulled down the driveway, he ran into a tree, where his wife found him unresponsive.

A neighbor helped pull Aaron Haskell out of the car, and the neighbor’s wife, Katie Hermon, a nurse at St.Vincent Health, began performing CPR. The fire truck and ambulance escorting Santa through Zionsville had been in the neighboring subdivision at the time of the incident and was soon on the scene. Medics continued CPR and provided four shocks from the cardiac monitor to regain a pulse. They transported Haskell to St.Vincent, where he regained consciousness as firefighters were preparing to leave.

“The entire Zionsville Fire Dept. is so grateful that this family gets to spend another Christmas together, and we cannot emphasize enough the importance of knowing CPR,” ZPD stated in a press release.

Joleen Haskell thanked the department in a note released by ZFD. “The entire Haskell family cannot even begin to express our gratitude to everyone at the ZFD who responded (Dec. 12) and were responsible for saving my husband’s life,” she stated. “You are a Christmas miracle to us, and we are forever grateful. Thank you, Santa (Andrew) for trading your Santa suit for the rest of the evening to do your job so very well, and thank you to each and every person on the team who assisted. Each of you are a blessing to this community, and we are proud to call Zionsville home.”

Dispatches Christmas tree disposal – Zionsville residents have several options for disposing of live trees after the holiday season. During the week of Jan. 2, Ray’s Trash Service will pick up Christmas trees curbside for no charge as part of the town’s regular trash pickup schedule. Ray’s will collect one tree only (at no charge), and the tree must be bare and cut up into sections no longer than four feet tall. Live trees may be dropped off at Boone County Resource Recovery, 985 S. US Highway 421, for a fee of $2 per tree and GreenCycle, 4227 Perry Worth Road in Whitestown, beginning Jan. 3.

Teacher retirement – Zionsville Community High School math teacher, Gary Rabb, retired after 38 ½ years of teaching. In addition to teaching, Gary has coached ZCHS girls in golf, basketball, track and softball during his tenure at the high school. He also has been a bus driver for Rabb the Zionsville school system and a teacher union representative.

Job fair – Zionsville Community Schools will hold a job fair from 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 11 at the Educational Services Center, 900 Mulberry St. Enter through Door 11 and proceed to the boardroom.

It was educational to learn how different departments of different sizes in different locations deal with those situations we deal with.”

Museum tree sports PVE art

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com There’s something special about a 25-foot tree in the Indiana State Museum’s lobby.

Not only is it adorned with ornaments created by artists from bicentennial each of Indiana’s 92 counties, but it’s also covered with 200 wishes from fourth graders from Pleasant View Elementary.

Each student hand-sewed a cardinal as part of the annual project to learn about Indiana’s history. While sewing their birds they also inserted a wish for the next 200 years of Indiana statehood.

“My wish was to have a successful economy and for Indiana to be a success in many years to come,” fourth grader Ellie Benneyworth said. She was inspired by songs that her teacher played for the class about the state written by Indiana artists.

A kiosk near the tree allows visitors to read all of the wishes written by the students.

Visitors can then add their own wishes to a paper chain that is added to the tree heralding the end of Indiana’s bicentennial celebration.

Other wishes were for Indiana residents to have homes and food, to be safe from tornadoes and to have better roads.

The red cardinals — Indiana’s state bird — are “visually interesting” on the tree, McDaniel said.

“It’s kind of exciting because other people get to see the artwork that I did,” Ellie said.

“Even though we all had the same (materials), all of them look different.”

The tree is on display until Jan. 1.

Remembering a man, his river and his dogs Commentary by Ward Degler I doubt you ever heard of Joe Wilson. He was a Missourian, after all, and the only reason I knew him was plain talk through my daughter who lives there.

Joe had two missions in life. One was the Missouri River, which flows past his home in Jefferson City. The other was dogs.

On the north bank of the river where Highways 54 and 63 converge at the bridge lies a mile-wide floodplain that runs from the river to a ridge of limestone bluffs. That river bottom area has flooded more times than most people can count, inundating and ultimately wiping out forever the town of Cedar City and putting the metropolitan airport under water on a regular basis for as long as I can remember.

At the river’s edge is a small city park and a boat landing area known as Noren Access, named for former Conservation Department Director Carl Noren. The park never got much attention from the city parks department, and it, too, was often flooded and littered with debris, which usually stuck around until the next flood.

Wilson thought that was just plain wrong.

He reasoned that if the city has a park, it

should be kept up. He took his concerns to both the city council and the parks department. And when nothing happened, he took on the project himself.

Cleanup, sanitation and even electric lights came to the park, all paid for by Wilson. He even hauled a giant tree from the river so people could sit on it. For years, folks enjoyed the fruits of Joe Wilson’s labor.

His other passion was dogs. All dogs, especially strays. Joe loved them all, took them in, treated their health problems and made it his mission to find them homes.

It was this dedication to strays that brought Wilson to the frequent attention of the city. His small home was often filled to overflowing with dogs. Neighbors complained, fines were levied, but Joe never gave up his rescue operation.

I met Joe one summer afternoon at the park. He rolled up in his battered pickup to where my daughter and I were walking one of her dogs. When he opened the door, an avalanche of dogs flowed from the cab.

I never did figure out how many there were.

We chatted for a while as the dogs explored the park, then he whistled and they lunged back into the truck, found their seats and were gone. I never saw him again.

Joe died last September after a long battle with cancer. Shortly afterward, the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Commission renamed the park “Joe Wilson’s Serenity Point at Noren Access.”

No name has ever been more appropriate.

2017 brings focus on economic development

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Economic development will be a focus in Zionsville in 2017. The chamber of commerce wants to be more active new year in that area, according to Board President Kris Patel.

One of the chamber’s subcommittees, Government Affairs and Economic Development, will focus on creating a vision for economic development versus a focus on government development Phillips as in past years, he said.

Tracy Phillips joins the chamber in 2017 as the new executive director, and there is an expectation that she will bring her events expertise to potentially add a new event.

“We think Tracy is going to be able to take us to the next level in terms of making the chamber a bigger presence in the town of Zionsville,” Patel said.

Finding a way to bring entrepreneurs into town and retain them through all phases of growth is a goal of zWORKS for 2017. Members of the coworking space are split evenly between those working for other businesses and those who are creating startups. zWORKS President Dan Moyers expects some changes in staff in the new year. Ashley Marvel was hired in November as community experience manager, and there are plans to

hire a full time executive director in the first quarter of 2017. Marvel will split her job between zWORKS and Indianapolis coworking space The Speak Easy, with both locations sharing reciprocity among members.

Moyers hopes the town will find interim solutions for businesses that have graduated from the smaller zWORKS building but aren’t ready to build a larger office in Creekside Corporate Park.

“We need more options if we want these companies to stay in Zionsville,” he said. “These graduate spaces are part of being competitive.”

With the completion of the infrastructure of Creekside Corporate Park, Zionsville’s Director of Planning and Economic Development Wayne DeLong expects an increase in daytime traffic once new businesses build in the new office park. DK Pierce and Associates, the second tenant of Creekside, is expected to complete its building in 2017.

Just down the road, a 47,000-square-foot food-grade facility for Hurst Beans should be completed midway through next year at 106th Street and Bennett Parkway, DeLong said.

The property known as The Farm, owned by the Pittman family and at the southwest corner of 116th Street and Michigan Road, is unable to commit to development, although Steve Pittman said he would like to see it move forward. The land was approved for a mixed-use development by the Zionsville Town Council in 2015.

Playing against type Commentary by Terry Anker Actors, some say, have a type. The way they look, the way they speak and the way they take the stage all contribute to fashioning a shorthand for the audience – the birthing of a persona. We audiences seem to prefer that these characters align very tightly within our expectations. In sitcoms, we look for the whacky neighbor, like Ethel Mertz in “I Love Lucy.” In drama, we expect to find the wealthy inheritor, too eager to await dad’s death by natural causes. And in professional wrestling, we seek the loathsome cheater – always ready to take advantage of our goodguy hero who is playing yet another role.

If we’re completely honest, don’t we look for types in most situations? There is the woman at the office always planning for the staff parties. And there is the Alpha-male new-hire who is keen to make a name for himself as a hard case. So, are these folks actually one-dimensional, or are we overly willing to assume them to be?

To become a long-playing and working actor, identify a comfortable persona and fill it for a lifetime. In essence, one embraces the role of central-casting player for this “type” of character. Yet, rarely is the move made from supporting performer to a top-billed star. Usually, it is not for lack of trying. Actors often accept roles intentionally to perform against their own type.

But the audience, loving of the compliant actor, lash out at those who wish to expand the kinds of roles they might pursue.

Are they alone? Don’t we find ourselves trapped in our own carefully curated personas, often hoping to be considered different by our peers, more by our employers, and better by our families? Yet, the more we struggle to be seen differently, the more that others resist our desire to self-redefine.

For the fourth New Year in a row, I’m vowing to curtail my cussing. Not go cold turkey or anything, just ease humor off on the R-rated material.

I’m already anticipating problems, though. One, because I actually like swearing. And two, occasionally I just need the release that only a perfectly lobbed f-bomb can bring.

Let’s be honest. Being a parent requires you to constantly censor yourself. Children are impressionable tattletales who will gleefully rat you out to any neighbor, teacher or priest. Not my kids, mind you.

My darling angels think it’s hilarious when I call someone an a-hole. It’s other peoples’ kids you have to beware. For example, you slam your hand in the minivan door while carpooling to dance. Even though Myth Busters proved that cursing increases pain tolerance, you can’t yell “c%#*s@!*&er,” because Suzie will tell her straight-laced mommy that you have a potty mouth. And then you’re back to driving both ways, all five days. He*& no!

But my youngest is only 12, which means I still have a few more years before I can conceivably speak an unforgivable in front of her friends without the potential of being ratted on. That’s entirely too long to be limited to ineffective “darns” and boring “fudges.” Bottom line? It’s simply not possible, or even healthy, to expurgate my vocabulary.

This is how the crazies on the clock towers are formed. They repress their true feelings for decades and end up sniping passersby.

I don’t want to be a clocktower killer.

I believe it’s better to release the rage in small doses. I also think that when used appropriately and with solid comedic timing, foul language is hilarious (exhibit A: George Carlin). That’s why I love my family and coworkers. They get it. They know that swearing is simply a punch line, a vent, or a colorful way to say you’ve had a hard day.

But I recognize I probably need to take it down a notch. When you come close to using the c-word in church, it’s time to reevaluate! Here’s to a classier 2017! Peace out.

new town hall open Zionsville’s new Town Hall building is expected to be complete in September or October, and town employees can’t wait.

“We’ll be transitioning over there next fall as this building keeps falling apart,” Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak said from a conference room in the current Town Hall. “We look forward to it every day.”

The $10.2 million, 42,600-square-foot building is under construction behind the current one at 1100 W. Oak St. It will house the mayor’s office, fire administration and the planning, finance and technology departments and provide public meeting spaces, a community room and have an outdoor plaza that connects to the Rail Trail.

Once town officials move into their new space, the current Town Hall — which is in a 54-year-old former church — will be torn down to make way for new development. Haak said it will include a new road to align with Brendan Way. Haak said the town will be “kind of picky” about what will be developed on the site and that they’ve had several inquiries.

“We would envision some potential mixed-use and probably some professional buildings, maybe doctors’ offices, dentists, eye care,” Haak said. “We’ve got some people who have met with us and are getting a feel for what we like, and we think we’re going to have a couple proposals in the spring. We’re not in any rush right now.”

Improving infrastructure will be a focus for this year, Haak said, with projects planned to address drainage issues, intersections, aging roads and more.

One of the first projects will be a stoplight installed at the intersection of Oak Street and Kissel Road, a project the town had hoped to complete by the end of 2016. Soil instability led to a delay, but town officials expect the project to begin in February.

The intersection, which many residents claimed to be dangerous in 2016, is planned to eventually be a double-lane roundabout, but the $1.6 million project is not yet funded.

One roundabout that will take shape this year is at the intersection of Mulberry Street and Ford Road. The $510,000 project is scheduled to occur during the summer months to provide as little disruption as possible to nearby schools.

Haak said residents can expect to see additional roundabouts in Zionsville, but not in 2017.

“There are some areas of town where roundabouts are great for traffic, but they’re not great for pedestrians. Especially in the Village, we want to keep the closeness of Main Street intact for walkers and shoppers,” he said. “Overall, we’ll see more roundabouts eventually.”

Village Walk Drive is among the town’s top priorities for repair.

The town will spend $800,000 to completely replace the half-mile street next summer.

In March, construction is expected to begin at the intersection of 96th Street and Zionsville Road. Through lanes will be added north and south to Technology Drive, bike lanes and sidewalks will be added, the east/west alignment will be corrected and the traffic signal will be modernized. Construction is planned to wrap up by August.

Other infrastructure projects expected to begin this year include bridge replacements by INDOT along I-865, upgrades to Zionsville Road between 96th and 106th streets and improvements to the wastewater and stormwater systems in the Village, which are more than 100 years old.

The town also expects to construct a pathway along 700 E between the Royal Run subdivision and Zionsville West Middle School, a project that has been long delayed.

Haak expects several more tenant announcements in 2017, but he’s not in a hurry.

“We’re not going to rush to put people in there as fast as we can,” he said. “We’re going to get the right ones in there for the long-term benefit of the town.”

The town touts Creekside as a 66-acre “conservation” office park, as nearly 40 percent of the property will remain as natural woodlands. It also will include more than one mile of trails through the natural areas, which are expected to open to the public as soon as construction on boardwalk areas is complete.

“We’re creating something that a developer couldn’t. We’re putting more money into it than a developer would have the capability,” Haak said. “I think a developer would’ve gone in, cut all the trees down and flattened it, so we’re really trying to create something special in there. We take people back there and they go, ‘Oh, my goodness, this place is awesome.’”

Creekside is part of Zionsville’s ongoing efforts to expand its tax base, which took a big hit when residential property tax caps went into effect, Haak said.

“When tax caps were first implemented, we were about 95 percent residential, and it’s not a good business model for us to survive in,” he said. “Tax caps have been hard on bedroom communities like Zionsville, so we’ve had to find creative ways to expand that.”

Public safety tax implemented A .5 percent local income tax for public safety went into effect Jan. 1 in Boone County. Proposed

by Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen, the Zionsville Town Council was among six municipalities to vote in support of the new tax at a special meeting in October.

The LIT is expected to generate $4 million for the town in its first year. The Zionsville police and fire departments plan to Nielsen begin hiring additional staff this year, as both have been operating below ideal staffing levels for many years.

The police department plans to hire three officers in 2017, two more and a civilian position in 2018 and two or three additional officers in 2019.

“That’s going to bring us up to the (suggested) standards of 2016,” ZPD Chief Robert Knox said.

“Still, I’m operating two to three years behind, but with our crime, I don’t need an officer on every corner, and nobody wants that, including myself.”

ZFD plans to hire 12 new employees with LIT funds, with firefighters expected to be ready to begin working shifts in August or September. The department did not add any positions when it opened Station 93 in 2012 and has not since, leaving each fire truck staffed with three firefighters as opposed to the ideal total of four.

The LIT is expected to cost approximately $500 annually for a resident making $100,000 a Suarez year. In October, Zionsville Town Council President Susana Suarez said that the council intends to file an amendment in early 2017 that would sunset the tax in seven to 10 years, which would cause officials to review the tax and its effectiveness.

What to expect in 2017 Other changes to expect this year include: • Continued population growth in Zionsville.

Several neighborhoods are expected to be under construction, with many new homes ready in 2017.

• An inaugural poetry contest, a joint effort between the Town of Zionsville and the Zionsville Cultural District. The winner is expected to have his or her poem inscribed in the plaza outside of the new Town Hall.

• The first Mayor’s Night In events, tentatively scheduled for March 1 and Nov. 1. The program at Town Hall is open to the public and will include comments from the mayor on timely issues and a chance for attendees to ask questions.

Zion Nature Center move uncertain The Zion Nature Center will be moving into a new home, but town officials don’t know yet if it will happen this year.

Since opening in 2002, the nature center has operated out of a building owned

by Zionsville Community Schools. The district has indicated it intends to use the site of the nature center for offices as growth has created a need for more space.

In 2015, the Zionsville Town Council approved $300,000 to build a new nature center near Heritage Trail Park. The proposed 5,000-square-foot building could also serve as a backup Town Hall, if needed. The project went out to bid in 2016, but when all bids came back much higher than expected, the town put the project on hold. Town officials are considering whether to re-bid the project when construction firms are less busy or make changes to the scope of the project.

In the meantime, the funds designated for the new nature center could be reallocated for projects that include installation of irrigation wells at Mulberry Fields and updating stairways along trails.

Mayor Tim Haak is confident heading into 2017, and for good reason. At this time last year, he was preparing to become the town’s first fulltime elected mayor and didn’t know if it was a position that would last.

When the Indiana Supreme Court validated Zionsville’s reorganization with Perry Township in January, thereby solidifying the position of mayor, Haak found instant job secuHaak rity. Now, a year into his first term and more than a year after the reorganization, he feels the town is in a good place for growth.

“We’ve got a lot of positive momentum,” Haak said.

Haak’s first year was full of ups and downs. It included three murders in a town that hadn’t seen one since 1997; many new business announcements; and a vote to implement a new countywide tax. No matter what happened, Haak said the town’s new governmental structure helped officials handle situations more efficiently.

“Things happen a lot faster. That’s the primary reason the council decided to have a mayor instead of waiting every 30 days for a council to take action,” he said. “We can get stuff done in a matter of hours or days. The residents and the business community have someone to call with questions, concerns or complaints.”

Looking ahead, Haak is eager to implement his first budget and enter into a new year with some experience under his belt. “(There’s) still a steep learning curve, but it’s a lot of fun,” he said.

Blueprint for Improvement: Geist master bath update Commentary by Larry Greene

Before Background Info: The owners of this 1990s Geist-area home in the Admirals Point neighborhood were in need of a master bath upgrade. Like so many of these ’90s-era homes, the bathroom was still functional but was completely outdated and no longer fit the personal style of the owners.

Before problems: This master bathroom was outdated but was not in need of any functionality adjustments. The efficient bathroom layout simply needed a “pull and replace” remodel.

After solutions: The goal for this master bathroom was to update the aesthetics of the room to fit the owners’ style.

1. The large tub with the bulky surround was removed and replaced with a sleek freestanding tub with dark bronze fixtures.

2. With the large tub surround removed, there was extra space to enlarge the shower. The look of the shower was updated with glass doors and bronze fixtures. The tile used on the floor was continued on of the back of the shower to give a luxurious look.

3. The floor of the shower is tiled with a small wood, like hexagon mosaic tile. The wood-like pattern gives the shower more detail against the dark floors.

4. Both vanities in the bathroom were replaced with new dark cabinets and granite countertops.

Bronze plumbing fixtures were used to maintain continuity.

5. The original tile floor was replaced with a dark brown porcelain tile that visually warms the entire room.

Back in the Day: 15 volunteers play first CSO performance Commentary by Terri Horvath In 1976, 15 musicians came together to play for their own pleasure. From these humble beginnings, the Carmel Symphony Orchestra was born. history Instrumental in the formation was the first director of the group, Viktors Ziedonia, a Latvian immigrant who settled in Carmel and was a violinist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He directed the first CSO concert in December 1976 with these musical volunteers.

Ziedonia continued as the Carmel orchestra’s leader for its first two seasons. James Edington took over the next three seasons while he continued to teach music lessons.

By 1996, the group had grown into a thriving 65-member orchestra, performing with such guest artists as jazz pianist Peter Nero and the Ramsey Lewis Jazz Quartet. Another highlight of the group’s innovations was its series of programs for children.

The orchestra has since grown to more than 85 musicians with a unique blend of paid musicians and ardent volunteers. More than half of the musicians have been with the orchestra for 15 years or more.

In its early days, the orchestra primarily played in the Carmel High School auditorium. Today, CSO performs at the Palladium Theatre. Adding to its musical resume are performances by such internationally renowned artists as Michael Feinstein, Angela Brown, Cameron Carpenter, Chris Botti, Di Wu, Bernadette Peters, Sylvia McNair, Cheyenne Jackson, Dionne Warwick and more.

Carmel is the smallest Indiana community to have a symphony orchestra.

Broadway concert show returns

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Neil Berg’s “100 Years of Broadway” has been a road fixture since 2006.

However, when he brings his music long-running Broadway concert show to Carmel’s Palladium at 8 p.m. Jan. 21, it will be billed as “101 Years of Broadway.”

“Whenever we come back to a venue, I always add a year,” said Berg, who previously brought his show to the Palladium in October 2013. “It’s just our way of telling people we’ve been there before. We make sure every place we come back to (the show) is fresh.”

Berg said the show has been the No. 1 touring Broadway concert for the last decade, typically featuring five Broadway performers.

The first reason, Berg said, all his singers will perform songs from the actual shows they were in.

“We look at the history of Broadway and have them sing songs they would sing if they were stars from that era,” Berg said. “It’s not just some singer singing some Broadway show tunes.”

Berg serves as musical director, host and plays the piano during the show.
