County works to save pieces of collapsed historic bridge

Boone County officials are working to salvage what they can of a historic bridge that collapsed Dec. infrastructure 2 after the driver of a John Deere tractor attempted to pull across equipment that was too wide.

Craig Parks, Boone County Highway engineer, said the tractor and equipment were removed from the bridge structure by Dec. 15. The Boone County Highway Dept. is working with Beaty Construction, Camden Construction and an engineering firm with expertise in historic structures to disassemble the rest of the bridge. Parks said the next step is to create an inventory of the pieces to determine what can be saved from the structure, which is more than 100 years old.

“It is considered a historic select structure through a programmatic agreement we have with INDOT and (the) Federal Highway Administration, which means we have to be extremely careful how we remove the pieces so we can save as much of the original structure as possible in hopes to reconstruct it back in such a way that preserves its historic nature, utilizing as many undamaged pieces as possible,” Parks said.

The select pieces will be stored until a redesign plan is developed.

Parks said the estimated cost of extraction is $23,950. The estimated cost of removal of the remaining structure is more than $101,000. Hiring the engineering firm to supervise the project is expected to cost $7,600. The department anticipates the insurance company that covers the tractor will fund the project.

When a redesign is complete, the reconstruction portion of the project will be up for bid. Parks said there is no timeline.

Wilcoxson sentenced — Damoine Wilcoxson has been sentenced to 37 years in prison with an additional 3-year suspended sentence to be served on probation. Wilcoxson was convicted of two counts of Attempt Murder (Level 1 Felony) and one Wilcoxson count of Criminal Recklessness (Level 5 Felony) for shooting at two Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Dept. buildings in 2016. Wilcoxson is also charged with the murder of a Zionsville man. A trial in that case is set for May 7.

Broadband-ready ordinance — The Zionsville Town Council unanimously passed an ordinance declaring the Town of Zionsville as a broadband-ready community. The certification demonstrates that a community has taken steps to reduce barriers to broadband infrastructure investment. The ordinance states that the town will comply with certain project standards relating to broadband issues.

Coffee With a Cop — The Zionsville Police Dept. invites the public to Coffee With a Cop at 9 a.m. on Jan. 24 at McDonald’s, 50 Brendon Way. Community members can meet with officers, ask questions and learn more about the department’s work.

Development review — The Boone County Economic Development Corp. announced that 14 companies chose to expand or locate in Boone County in 2017. These companies anticipate hiring more than 1,800 people and investing more than $193 million in the community over the next few years.

These deals are expected to bring a tax impact of more than $14 million.

Boone County officials have been talking about the need for an animal control officer for several County years. Boone County Sheriff’s deputy Hannah Fisher is stepping into the role Jan. 1.

“In the past several months I have become Fisher very passionate about this new opportunity in the law enforcement profession, and I am sincerely grateful to Sheriff (Mike) Nielsen for the opportunity,” Fisher said. “There will be a change in my title and a few incidental things will change, but I will retain law enforcement powers.”

Nielsen said the position is something the county has needed for a long time.

“I remember being a lieutenant on the road and our hands being tied on many of these types of calls,” he said. “This was one of my priorities when I became sheriff.”

Nielsen’s officers responded to 940

animal-related calls in 2016.

“It’s estimated the dog and cat population in our county exceeds the human population by 18 percent. This doesn’t include the other domesticated animals, livestock and wildlife (that occasionally pose a threat) that reside in our county,” Fisher said. “From a numbers perspective, the demand speaks for itself.

However, we also have a tremendous push from the Nielsen residents because they need a direct point of contact.”

Susan Austin, president of the Humane Society for Boone County, said county residents need and deserve a full-time animal control officer.

“An ACO needs to have the authority and legal standing to require the surrender of an animal or remove an animal from a dangerous situation. HSforBC has no legal authority to trespass and remove an animal without permission,” she said. “That authority can only come rightfully through having police powers, training and countywide animal control ordinances.”

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Fire Dept. is going red on Fridays to honor active military members and veterans. The nationmilitary wide initiative, R.E.D Friday, stands for “Remember Everyone Deployed.”

ZFD Chief James VanGorder said he was approached by Zionsville Professional Firefighters Local 4416 with the details of the initiative, and he thought it was a great way to honor active military and veterans.

ZFD got the idea from neighboring Pike Fire Dept.

“I think it’s important for those serving to know that there are many people thinking of them while they are gone from their families,” VanGorder said. “I hope that when they do get to come home, they see a sea of red on Fridays.”

There are 12 veterans and active military members employed by ZFD. VanGorder said the program will go on indefinitely, except in October, when firefighters wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness. ZFD has implemented R.E.D. Friday as part of its uniform policy.

ZFD employees have the option to donate $2 to the initiative on Fridays. VanGorder said the initiative has raised $350 in the first few weeks, and the fire dept. has sent the first of many care packages to military personnel.

Community members are encouraged to join ZFD in wearing red on Fridays. Donations can be dropped off in the red collection boxes at the Zionsville fire stations or ZFD headquarters at Town Hall.

New trails, improved roads among projects slated for 2018 in Zionsville

Other upgrades include new emergency warning sirens, drainage pipelines and a public plaza at Town Hall.

Public safety Last year marked the first for Boone County agencies to receive funding from a 1 percent public safety local income tax approved in late 2016, and it’s having the desired effect in Zionsville.

The Zionsville Police Dept. hired three new officers in 2017 because of the tax and expects to hire two more and an administrative assistant this year. The Zionsville Fire Dept. hired 16 firefighters in 2017 because of the new tax, which helped cover staffing shortfalls at every station.

“It was huge. It kind of saved our public safety departments. They were both essentially operating on a negative budget, and we were having to use funds from other departments to fund them,” Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak said. “NotaHaak bly, our streets department and parks department were both having to divert funds from their budgets to police and fire. We don’t necessarily have to do that anymore.”

In 2018, ZFD is planning to add a new fire engine, and the town will add five emergency warning sirens throughout town.

streets The biggest street upgrade planned for 2018 is the widening of Zionsville Road, which will go from two to three lanes when a center turn lane is added between Technology Center Drive and 106th Street. The $4 million project also includes adding a bike path on the west side of the road.

Work is expected to begin in the spring and last through the construction season. Haak said the road will likely be closed to through-traffic during construction, which is expected to save two months of work and $450,000.

“We’ll probably get a better project doing that,” Haak said.

Other street projects include: • Improving bicycle and pedestrian access to south Main Street by constructing a separate bridge for pedestrians or modifying the existing bridge to provide a wider and more protected space for them.

• Improvements to pedestrian crossings at Oak Street and Ford Road. The town had planned to make these upgrades in fall 2017, but bids came in much higher than expected. The project is expected to begin in early 2018 and be complete by mid-summer.

• Design of a new north-south connector road between 850 E/Cooper Road and CR 875 E, although the project isn’t expected to be under construction until 2019.

• Completion of the CR 700 pathway to connect the Royal Run neighborhood with Zionsville West Middle School. The project was expected to be complete in 2017, but weather conditions led to delays.

• Several projects funded through INDOT’s Community Crossing’s matching grant fund, include upgrades to CR 950 E, Oak Street, Parkway Drive, Brendon Way and Maxwell Lane.

The parks department is in the midst of a 5-year master plan update, with a final public meeting to gather feedback scheduled for 6 p.m. March 21 at Town Hall, 1100 W. Oak St. The builders of the Vonterra subdivision off Zionsville Road are incrementally donating land for the 43-acre Overly-Warman Park near Eagle Creek. The master plan for the park is complete, and it is expected to open in the next year or two as funding for the project becomes available.

For a couple years the town has been looking at relocating the Zion Nature Center, which is housed in a building owned by Zionsville Community Schools that the district may need in the future as its student population grows. Bids for a proposal to build it near Heritage Trail Park came in too high, so the town shelved the project, Haak said.

But in 2017, the town acquired the 13-acre site of the former Rail Trail Gardens on S 875 E, which is now planned to be the site of the nature center and offices for the parks and street departments. Construction isn’t expected to begin in 2018, but the town will work on the design of the site. Haak said it could include one building or ­— more likely — a building for the street department and another one to house the nature center and parks administration.

Drainage improvements are planned for 4th Street between Hawthorne and Pine streets, with construction beginning in early 2018 and ending by mid-summer.

Construction also is expected on 3rd Street between Oak and Walnut streets to increase stormwater pipe capacity to reduce flooding in the area.

The town also is working on drainage upgrades in the Irongate subdivision to reduce flooding.

Remodeling Seminar development The town sold Creekside Corporate Park to Rockland Development for $6.1 million in 2017, and some new tenant announcements are anticipated in early 2018.

The town also is expecting to finalize the sale of two parcels that comprise the site of the former Town Hall building. The owners of Storen Financial Group and Zionsville Eyecare have proposed a 20,000-square-foot, two-story building on the west parcel to house their offices, and the town expects to put the other parcel up for sale after a new road between the sites is complete.

Kroger is expected to open this month in Boone Village, replacing the Marsh that

went out of business in mid-2017. Plans for two other Kroger-owned stores at 116th Street and US 421 and E 300 S and US 421 are on hold.

The town will begin a study in 2018 to determine ways to ease traffic in the downtown area. Implementation of the plan is not expected for two or three years.

“It’s going to be a pretty big challenge to accommodate both pedestrians and vehicles. If we were solely concerned about vehicles, it’s a lot easier to do, but we want to make sure it’s done right,” Haak said. “We don’t want to split Main Street in two. We still want to make it walkable for everyone.”

The biggest project of 2017 was the construction of Zionsville’s new Town Hall building, which opened in October. Some finishing details will be put in place in 2018, with a new plaza between the building and the Rail Trail set to open in the spring.

Fundraising for the project is expected to happen in 2018, with an opening date projected for sometime this year.

Christmas Story Commentary by Terry Anker This time of year, we become reacquainted with old friends and family, remembering why we love and miss them. But also, we may remember why we only see them on holidays!

All the same, winter brings out in us an innate desire to reaffirm traditions of all sorts. We search high and low for the “right” sweet potatoes for pie. We love the treat and couldn’t imagine a year without it. Yet, we never seem to miss it the other 364 days of the calendar. Food, decorations and song work our collective memories.

They connect us to each other and to our past. Even more so, we scan the channels seeking the reaffirming and redundant broadcast of our favorite movies and specials. How can the 25th viewing be more powerful than the previous 24?

One favorite, “A Christmas Story,” is adapted from humorist and author Jean Shepherd’s book, “In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash.” Loosely based on his childhood home in Hammond, Ind., the story is that of youthful desire. Yet, it elegantly lays out the hopes and dashed desires of the protagonist’s “old man” as well. Even as he misses the top prize, he cherishes the one he does receive.

Likewise, no one thinks Ralphie to be incomplete without a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200 Shot Range Model Air Rifle. Still, they suspend their legitimate concerns about his safety to support his long-held dream.

Even as we know that our only complete trust may be reserved for our maker, we work to find trust in those around us. Reliability, support and love may not substitute for trust. But, aren’t they close enough?

I worry when it gets cold Commentary by Ward Degler I’m not a big fan of snow. Not like I was a million years ago when the city used to close Suicide Hill and plain talk turn it over to kids for sledding. Today, I have to drive in the stuff and shovel it from my driveway.

Even so, snow isn’t really scary. Not like extreme cold. When the mercury drops into the single digits, I fret.

I worry that the water pipes will freeze, and that my car won’t start, and even if it does that it will frost up along the way and leave me stranded..

I spent the winter of 1978 on a farm in Minnesota. The house was built in 1848 and had been but slightly improved since then. There was no insulation, and frost turned the walls white and the windows opaque.

We wrapped the water pipes with electric tape, but they froze, anyway. We had a hand pump out by the barn where we drew water for the cows and chickens.

Some days it also was the only water we had for cooking and washing.

There was a large thermometer nailed to a tree outside the kitchen door, and for a solid 30 days it never budged above 25-below. I finally got tired of looking at

it and turned it around.

I had two cars, an ancient pickup and a tractor, and they all had tank heaters that got plugged in every night. I prayed the electricity wouldn’t fail. It was so cold that when I shut the car door one morning the window shattered.

The wind blew nonstop, and my driveway and the county road drifted closed every night. I coaxed the tractor to life and plowed a path through to the highway every morning before breakfast.

Then, one morning we woke to silence.

The wind had abated during the night and the sun was warm in the eastern sky. I went out to the thermometer and turned it around. It had warmed up to 10-below and we were jubilant.

Most of this has been reduced to a faded memory, of course. But there was snow on the ground this morning, the wind was blowing and the temperature had sunk to single digits.

I automatically checked the water pipes and wondered if my car would start.

Every Christmas, my four sisters and I struggle to come up with a present for our parents. Often we go solo, one humor framing a picture of the grandkids and another giving a gift card to their favorite restaurant. But this year, divine inspiration hit the youngest, and we magnificently delivered on what will certainly go down as the Best Christmas Present ever. We gave them a golf cart!

First, some backstory. My parents have lived in the same house for 45 years. In 2014, the middle sister found the perfect home, directly across the street from Mom and Dad. They are so close that though impractical, a zip line between the two is feasible. Then this past May, our baby sister moved from Chicago, around the corner and five doors down. Dad often jokes that if this were Monopoly, they’d only need one more for a hotel. So, half of my family lives within 200 yards of each other in what is slowly becoming a compound.

Enter the golf-cart! Middle Sister braved a potential Facebook Marketplace murderer from Carollton, Ky., to purchase an obviously used four-seater, only to have the windshield blow off on her way back. I nearly rammed the thing through a neighbor’s fence as we prepared for the big reveal.

But it was all worth it when my parents were lured outside with lies of carolers and saw it barreling down the street, decked in colored lights and a bow. Mom’s joy in particular was priceless. Now, they can visit and transport grandkids even when hobbled while being the coolest old people on the block.

Best Christmas present ever!

This is my annual look back at, and appreciation for, all the people and events that inspired many of my humor weekly columns this past year. For example, thanks to…

• My brother, for getting married for the first time at a very late stage in life. When my sister called and said, “Your brother is doing something no Jewish guy ever does for the first time at the age of 65,” I thought I was going to his bar mitzvah.

• Whole Foods, where I bought an organic bar of green soap, wrapped in clear shrinkwrap. When I got out of the shower the next morning, I told my wife that I didn’t think it lathered very well. “Is it because it’s organic?” I asked Mary Ellen.

“No, it’s because you just washed yourself with a wedge of cheese.”

• Jerry Lewis, who passed away this year. He made me laugh since I was 8 years old. When I was in sixth grade, the teacher called my parents and said that I was always acting like Jerry Lewis in class. I was shocked when my father explained to me this was actually a bad thing.

• The Schneiders, who took us line danc-

ing in Florida. When I was certain I had all the moves right, all the other 65 people were doing it completely wrong. And in unison.

“No, but I opened and closed the garage door 11 times.”

Time to remove stigma Commentary by Adam Aasen Recently, I’ve attended several events designed to discuss the serious issue of opioid and heroin addiction.

I’ve stood up and told addiction my story of losing someone to an overdose. After the events, someone inevitably comes up to me and tells me they’ve been through the same experience but have been afraid to tell others.

Believe me, I completely understand.

There are a lot of judgmental people out there who assume that the only people who become addicted to heroin or opioids are out of control and dangerous. In fact, there are functional people who work hard at their jobs and struggle with addiction in private. Likely, you’ve met some of them and don’t realize it.

My family owns a small restaurant, and one night we suddenly became busy so we called an employee and asked if he could come in. He wasn’t scheduled, but he showed up almost immediately and worked his butt off. He even stayed late and was one of the last to leave.

The next day he was dead from an overdose.

We were shocked. He never showed up late and always had a good attitude.

His obituary ran in the paper, and someone saw that he worked for us and noticed he was quite young. A person I barely knew asked me how he died, and I told the truth.

The response I received floored me.

“No offense, but good riddance,” the person said. “I have no time for anyone with an addiction.”

How heartless. All lives are worth saving, in my view.

It’s comments like those that create a stigma of addiction. People are afraid to tell their stories, and as a result, some don’t get the help they need.

There are many things that need to be done to fix the opioid epidemic. There’s no magic element. But one thing we can do is to remove the stigma. Speak up if you have a story to tell, listen to others and try to consider their situation before you judge.

Dispatch Coffee for cough – Although most people may have heard of using honey to calm a cough, a recent study shows that combining the honey with a bit of coffee had a significant effect. Study subjects took a mixture of five parts honey to one part coffee, mixed in water, three times a day. The mixture worked better than a prescription steroid or guaifenesin.

BCEDC honors local businesses

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Two Zionsville businesses received recognition for their impact in the community during the Boone achievement County Economic Development Corp.’s annual meeting Dec. 7.

Rick Baldwin, owner of Village Concrete and Design, received the Community Impact Award for donating his services to Morning Dove Therapeutic Riding.

“I was shocked,” said Baldwin, who had to be nudged by his wife to realize he was being honored.

For the past 10 years, Baldwin has used his company’s equipment to spread sawdust in the barn and poured the concrete foundation for the riding arena. He also serves on the Morning Dove board and has been instrumental in helping plan a new building.

He was modest about the honor and his role with the horseback riding facility.

“I believe you don’t get extra credit for doing what you ought to do,” he said.

“I really built this with what I wished had been Cooper available when I had my company,” Cooper said.

Recently, Boosterville launched an online marketplace that includes Indianabased companies and small businesses selling online.

“We are sensitive to the local mom and pop stores,” she said. “We also know that to be able to spread this technology across the country we need to be able to give these PTAs and other groups somewhere to start.”

Cooper said that by spreading the reach of Boosterville it can bring awareness of small businesses to more people.

“I just always go back to what a great starting point Zionsville has been,” said Cooper, citing the collaborative nature of zWORKS and local merchants in helping create Boosterville.

Chamber to focus on retention

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Chamber of Commerce will emphasize retention this year after welcoming 69 new looking ahead members in 2017, many of whom sought out the chamber without being recruited.

“It is important to go and pursue new businesses, but we cannot forget that this is also about retention of our existing Phillips businesses,” said Tracy Phillips, the chamber’s executive director.

Phillips said in 2017 the chamber was so focused on moving into the new town hall and leading events that its officials were unable to meet with members individually.

This year, she wants to develop a “regular touch point” of open communication between chamber staff and each business for constant check-ins and updates. Phillips said new staff additions will help achieve the goal.

Staff will participate in monthly office hours at zWORKS, the chamber’s new stra-

tegic partner.

“We want to make sure that as you grow your business, you don’t forget that the chamber is here to serve you,” Phillips said. zWORKS Executive Director Kate Swanson said the company is implementing more frequent partner office hours in 2018 to educate and advise its entrepreneurs. Swanson said at least six partner services Swanson will be represented during office hours, including public relations and accounting.

In late January, the chamber also will introduce a new website with more member promotion, a job listing site, coupons and a robust calendar. The website will allow members to access the online calendar and write in their own events through a portal.

Phillips said the chamber will continue collaborating with and promoting the Town of Zionsville and its projects, such as finding businesses for Creekside Corporate Park, welcoming Kroger to the Boone Village Shopping Center and awaiting the development of five neighborhoods.

“2018 is very promising,” she said.

ZCHS grad produces rock musical

The first time Zach Rosing was asked to help with a theater production, he was sure he was the theater wrong man for the job.

By the time the run concluded, he was sure theater production was in his blood.

“I first got involved in producing theater in 2008, when a friend asked me to help with Rosing a local independent production of the musical ‘Bare,’” Rosing said. “I wasn’t much of a theater person before that, and I’m certainly not an actor, but I realized the various skills from my video and media production business translated very well to theater.

“I made a lot of great friends, and from there I was hooked.”

He still is.

A 2001 graduate of Zionsville Community High School, Rosing has produced more than 20 shows since 2008. His most recent effort is the rock musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” which begins an eight-performance run Jan. 5 at the Epilogue Players Theatre in Indianapolis.

show with producing partner Zack Neiditch. Collaborating under the moniker Zach & Zack, Rosing and Neiditch share responsibilities, which are rather easy to identify.

Rosing produces, and Neiditch directs.

“For ‘Hedwig,’ I’m in charge of a variety of responsibilities, including assembling a staff, money, marketing, including tak-

ing photos and designing artwork, securing the venue, ticketing, etc.,” Rosing said. “Basically, all the behind-the-scenes administrative stuff. I’m also the sound designer for the show.”

A longtime Zionsville resident who moved to Indianapolis a few years ago, Rosing has worked on his own productions and done others for theater companies. He is a three-time winner of NUVO’s Best Locally Produced Play for his work on “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” “The Great Bike Race” and “The Gab.” He is producing “Hedwig” for the second time.

A stage musical that opened OffBroadway in 1998, “Hedwig” tells the fictional tale of Hedwig Schmidt, an East German “rock goddess” who makes it over the Berlin Wall after a botched sexchange operation and learns “a thing or two” about life along the way. The cast includes Tim Hunt (who is also the associate producer) as Hedwig Schmidt and Kate Homan as Yitzhak.

Rosing last produced “Hedwig” in 2014.

“I’m excited to revisit it in an intimate, 50-seat venue,” Rosing said. “We always try to surpass expectations for what a nomadic theater company can produce.

Audiences should expect an evening they’ll never forget. Also, it will be loud.”

The music and performance program for high school students is led by Foundation founder and five-time Grammy Award nominee Michael Feinstein.

The weeklong Songbook Academy is the only high school intensive in the U.S. focused on jazz standards and classic Broadway and Hollywood songs, known as the Great American Songbook. The academy is scheduled for July 21 to 28 at the Songbook Foundation’s headquarters, the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

U.S. high school students are invited to submit videos with performances of two contrasting songs from the Great American Songbook genre. The 2018 application deadline is March 25.

Forty students nationwide are selected each year for this opportunity to participate in workshops and masterclasses.

Background info: This home west of Indianapolis was built in the 1950s as a custom model home. Although the home had many great characteristics, it needed many updates to bring the interior and exterior up-to-date.

Before problems The original kitchen was very small and narrow, making it difficult for the owner to host guests and limiting flow into the living area.

Several of the bathrooms in the home had original tile, cabinetry and plumbing fixtures. The outdoor living space lacked many of the details that the owners desired.

After

The goal was to create more space and to update multiple rooms of the home while keeping a cohesive design.

1. The original galley-style kitchen lacked the space the owner desired. By relocating an interior wall, the kitchen footprint was expanded, allowing enough space to put in a large island for casual seating.

2. Replacing all cabinetry, countertops, hardware and appliances gave the kitchen the modern update it needed.

3. To make the laundry room a more functional space, cabinetry and shelving for storage was added.

4. On the exterior of the home, the pergola was replaced with a much larger freestanding pavilion structure that housed an outdoor kitchen, fireplace and a TV, giving the homeowner plenty of room to entertain.

Budapest’s fitting memorial

None is the loneliest number

Some of the most beautiful buildings in Europe lie along the Danube River as it flows through Budapest, Huntravel gary. Along the east bank is a haunting memorial to victims of hate.

In 1935, Hungarian Ferenc Szálasi formed a movement sympathetic to Germany’s Nazi party. The movement quickly became the Nyilaskeresztes Párt, or Arrow Cross Party, using as its symbol crossed arrows suggestive of the swastika. The Arrow Cross Party, promoting German/Hungarian racial superiority, won 15 percent of the vote in parliamentary elections in 1939. After the Germans occupied Hungary in 1944, they installed Szálasi as prime minister, giving his Arrow Cross Party control of the government.

The Arrow Cross government immediately set out to cleanse Budapest of its Jews and other ethnic groups it considered undesirable. Perhaps 80,000 Jews were sent to work and to death camps. Between December 1944 and January 1945, groups of Arrow Cross gunmen rounded up hundreds of Jews and members of other minority groups and took them to the east bank of the Danube River that separates the Buda and Pest sections of Budapest. After forcing victims to remove their shoes, the gunmen shot them, their bodies then falling into the river. The terror stopped when the Russians took control of Budapest in February 1945.

In April 2005, Hungarian film director Can Togay and sculptor Gyula Pauer created a memorial to the Arrow Cross killings on the Danube River Promenade between the Hungarian Parliament Building and the Chain Bridge, where some victims were killed. The memorial, called simply Shoes on the Danube, consists of 60 pairs of men’s,

By choosing is in the sentence, the math nerds unwittingly made none singular, grammatically speaking. So, does that mean zero equals one? No. I’m not about to anger the math community more than I already have.

When none means not one or no part, use a singular verb. For example: Because I wanted my body to not hate me, none of the McRib was eaten. Similarly, none can be considered singular when part of a mass noun: None of the wine was wasted. Here, wine is a mass noun (as in: I drank the entire massive box of wine all by myself with some help from my trusty twisty straw).

The plot now thickens quicker than a malted milkshake. While many believe none is always singular, none can also

be plural. When you’re able to substitute none for not any, none takes a plural verb. For instance: None of the members of the math club have ever kissed a girl.

None of them were asked to the prom, so they held an alternative “prob,” which is short for probability. At the prob they thought their chances were statistically decent to end the night with a smooch from the cute girl who recently got contacts. When you make none plural, it makes your syntax less awkward, just like Gwenifer (the girl with the contacts).

So, let’s recap all of the none rules here. Use singular verb agreement when none quantifies a singular or mass noun.

When none modifies a plural noun, to me, it sounds/reads better to use plural verb agreement, although both singular and plural are technically acceptable. If someone suggests none always has to be singular, tell them it’s none of their business.
