Holcomb announces 2019 agenda

Burglary suspect arrested

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb announced his 2019 agenda Dec. 6 at Traders Point Creamery in Zionsville.

LOOKING AHEAD The agenda focuses on jobs, economic growth, health, infrastructure and government service.

“This agenda remains focused on what will make us stronger, with practical and peoplecentered solutions,” Holcomb said. “I look forward to working with Hoosiers, lawmakers and other stakeholders as we team up to achieve these priorities.”

The agenda outlined five pillars detailing legislative and administrative priorities for 2019.

The first item mentioned was strengthening and diversifying the economy. Holcomb’s agenda focuses on approving a balanced budget and modernizing economic development tools.

Second, Holcomb said he wants to maintain and build the state’s infrastructure. The $1 billion Next Level Connections program will expand broadband services in rural Indiana, grow the state’s systems of trails, add more nonstop international flights and move up the completion of major highway projects.

The Zionsville Police Dept. arrested an Indianapolis man, Victor Sanchez, Dec. 22 after he allegCRIME edly stole a Hummer from a Zionsville residence.

At 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 22, ZPD was dispatched to 6771 Berkley Ct., where a burglary was reported to be in Sanchez progress. The suspect was allegedly attempting to steal a yellow Hummer with a trailer attached.

When ZPD arrived, the Hummer was gone.

A similar vehicle was sighted by an officer near Kissel Road and Lafayette Road. Officers stopped the Hummer and confirmed the trailer was stolen.

Sanchez, 38, was operating the vehicle without a driver’s license.

Zionsville Police later confirmed a door had been kicked in and damaged at the residence on Berkley Court. Sanchez was taken into custody and transported to the Boone County Jail. He has been charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief, among other charges.

promised to expand the Next Level Jobs initiative, which provides Hoosiers with free, statewide training in high-paying, in-demand industries.

Holcomb also discussed developing a strategy to increase Indiana teacher salaries to make them competitive with surrounding states.

The fourth agenda item was aiding public health and addressing the drug epidemic with expanded recovery housing and the development of Family Recovery Courts.

The state will continue to work toward improving infant mortality rates, with a 2024 goal of becoming the best state in the Midwest for low infant mortality.

The final pillar of the plan called for improved government service by continuing to modernize state government to better serve citizens and businesses.

Secretary of state reports record voter turnout

With an estimated 113 million American voters having participated in the midterm elections, 2018 was a record ELECTIONS year for voter participation in the U.S. According to data from the United States Elections Project, the Nov. 6 General Election was the first midterm in history to exceed 100 million voters, with 49 percent of eligible voters participating in the election.

In early December, Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson announced 51 percent of registered voters in the state cast a ballot

in the Nov. 6 election. The total voter number in Indiana was 2,308,258 of 4.5 million registered.

“This is the highest midterm turnout in over two decades,” Lawson said.

Lawson said the last time Indiana saw a midterm election turnout that high was in 1994, when it was at 54.1 percent. By 1998, participation dropped to 44 percent.

“Both of these election cycles highlight how candidates and issues drive higher turnout in elections,” Lawson said.

By comparison, the 2014 midterm elections had a national figure of 36.4 percent of eligible voters participating, one of the lowest turnouts in American history. In 2010, the first

midterm of President Barack Obama’s administration, 41 percent of voters participated nationwide.

Boone and Hamilton counties had a higher turnout than the national rate.

Boone County had a 56.42 percent voter turnout, with 27,789 citizens participating out of 49,251 registered voters.

Turnout was even higher in Hamilton County, at 58 percent. Out of 237,895 registered voters, 138,843 citizens participated.

Early voting continues to increase in popularity. At 34 percent, the number of Indiana early voters in 2018 has doubled since 2014, when only 16 percent of voters cast a ballot early.

Robotics teams qualify for state

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Two teams from Zionsville Community High School’s robotics club will be heading to Indianapolis to the VEX Robotics STEM State Championship in March at Lucas Oil Stadium, with a goal to qualify for the world championship in April.

The first team qualified in November with its robot, Tesseract, during a competition in Indianapolis. The second team qualified Dec. 15 during a competition in Portage, where it received the excellence award that recognizes the best overall team. The team is ranked sixth in the world with its robot, Xenith.

Competition is expected to be high at the state competition because the top two teams in the world are from Indiana. But members of the Zionsville teams are confident about their chances of qualifying for the world championship.

Kevin Chen of the Xenith team said last year’s design was fairly basic, so the team spent the summer focusing on better designs.

The teams of three to five students compete throughout the year, rebuilding and

redesigning their robots to improve them after each competition.

Joey Shao, the only freshman on the Xenith team, said he’s learned a lot this year.

“It’s a great experience for teamwork and communication,” he said.

The competition is skills-based and records-based, with each team recording designs, changes and goals for the robot.

“Everything we’re learning now applies to things we’ll do in the future,” Xenith team member Carlos Morales said.

Remembering Christmases past Commentary by Ward Degler Two past Christmases always come to mind. Both times I was away from home.

The first was 1955. I was in the Army, stationed in Germany, PLAIN TALK and living in a two-room apartment upstairs in the village shoemaker’s house.

I had bought a small tree at the commissary along with a few decorations and tinsel. I set it up in the kitchen and was feeling pretty good about having a Christmas tree so far from home.

What seemed odd was my landlady had no decorations at all. Actually, no one in the village did. It was sad. Then came Christmas Eve. The bells in the Catholic church across the street started ringing close to midnight as the entire village headed to Mass.

After Mass, at least a dozen people poured into my landlady’s house bearing a staggering array of Yuletide decorations.

They decorated the entire house and even put a wreath on my door, all while singing carols, laughing and pausing often to toast one another with overflowing glasses of egg cognac.

The second memorable Christmas was

1962, and I was on a Navy ship in Taiwan.

A couple days before Christmas we discovered that our Christmas records had been left behind in San Diego.

Desperate, our supply officer went into town and bought the only thing he could find — a record of Christmas carols performed in Chinese. Starting Christmas Eve day, the music was piped nonstop through the ship’s scratchy sound system. It was horrible. The captain declared he had heard catfights that were more soothing.

Right after breakfast Christmas Day, the skipper called a halt to the serenade and ordered the record buried at sea.

To make up for the bad start to the season, the captain checked out a truck from the motor pool and the entire crew loaded it up with presents. Then we drove over to a local orphanage and put on a Christmas party for several dozen ecstatic children.

Ironically, they had a record of Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas.”

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com The Town of Zionsville is on a path of economic growth that it plans to continue in 2019, including a foCOVER STORY cus on filling positions at growing companies and linking businesses to resources. Town officials continue to work on connecting the Big 4 Trail and improving roads and facilities to support school and population growth.

New roads and trails

The Big 4 Trail has been the talk of the town for several years, along with ongoing countywide plans to connect the trail.

According to Zionsville Parks Dept. Director Matt Dickey, trails have been the top priority in the last three cycles of the department’s five-year master plan.

The Boone County Trail Committee conducted a summit Nov. 13 to discuss the future expansion of the Big 4 Trail and its connection between Zionsville, Whitestown, Lebanon and Thorntown.

At the meeting, Cory Whitesell, director of planning at HWC Engineering, said a study showed trails ranked No. 2 among 18 community amenities as reasons to choose specific locations when buying property.

“People want to live near trails because the trails can be interesting and aesthetically pleasing,” Whitesell said. “They provide a way to connect community members and promote health and fitness.”

The Big Four Railroad was a historical railway that traveled through the midwest until 1930. Zionsville was the first to develop a trail along the rail corridor in the 1990s.

Various sections have been completed, but movement toward the bigger goal of linking all sections has increased since 2016.

Zionsville officials are making progress on extending the trail south to Zionsville Road and north to 800 East. After reaching 800 East, there will be a half-mile remaining to connect with Whitestown.

“We are working to acquire land to expand the rail trails in all directions,” Dickey said. “There is 1 mile total (left) to get to 96th Street. We’ve already garnered some of

those pieces through donation.”

Zionsville also plans to repave roadways in the new year. With a $2.25 million investment, 3.3 miles of Zionsville roads were resurfaced in 2018 and an additional 3.5 miles of roads will be worked on in the spring of 2019.

In 2019, improvement of Zionsville Road will continue south toward 96th Street. The town recently completed the Zionsville Road Bridge, which included the addition of two 10-foot pedestrian pathways on either side of the bridge.

Safety

With the loss of Zionsville resident and Boone County Deputy Jacob Pickett in March, a double murder-suicide in September and a shooting at Quail Run in October, Zionsville Police Dept. and the Boone County Sheriff’s Office experienced a trying year.

“Zionsville is diversifying rapidly,” Chief of Police Robert Knox said at the Nov. 28 Mayor’s Night In. “We are growing our police

department and are increasing the size of our police force.”

ZPD hired five new officers and placed school resource officers in five schools.

It also installed three new public safety cameras.

In 2018, the Zionsville Fire Dept. trained more than 400 community members and students in CPR, installed five emergency warning sirens and raised money to purchase three new portable carbon monoxide detectors.

Economic development

Zionsville and Boone County saw widespread economic growth in 2018.

According to the Boone County Economic Development Corp., 16 companies, including Royal Interpack Midwest and Rockwell Automation Inc. in Whitestown, chose to expand or locate in Boone County in 2018, with plans to hire more than 1,300 people

and invest more than $279 million in the community during the next few years.

“We are pleased that the amount of new capital investment we brought to Boone County has increased by nearly 45 percent ($86 million) from last year,” Boone EDC Executive Director Molly Whitehead said.

According to Mayor Tim Haak, more than seven new businesses opened in Zionsville in 2018 and at least four expanded.

Two Zionsville-based businesses, Lids Sports Group and Mobi, announced the sale of their companies at the end of 2018.

Two local tech startups, ClearSoftware and 120WaterAudit, added employees and announced revenue growth.

With job fairs, a new manufacturing alliance, wage and benefits surveys and more, Boone EDC aims to connect businesses with potential employees and help retain the employees they have.

“Creating a group like the Boone County Manufacturing Alliance, we hope to make connections with other manufacturing groups,” Whitehead said. “(The businesses) will be able to have a deeper understanding of what their neighbors are doing, which helps problem-solve.”

New facilities

Construction will begin in early 2019 on the new Zion Nature Center, which will house the nature center and parks department headquarters. It will be north of the Zionsville High School Baseball and Softball Complex on 875 E. and will include access to the Big 4 Rail Trail, restrooms and additional storage for the parks department.

The Zionsville Plan Commission approved several new projects this year, including the expansion of Fire Dept. Station 92, development of the Holliday Farms community, building of a Zionsville Community Schools clinic and more.

The new ZCS facility will house its St. Vincent clinic for employees and a student services center, freeing up space at other ZCS facilities, which will be necessary to meet increasing enrollment rates. Construction is set to begin soon and the completion goal is summer 2019.

LETTER Don’t be fooled by HOA modernization

Commentary by Terry Anker Dignity is a word bursting with so much emotion that it packs a social and political wallop. Human dignity. Basic dignity. Since the 18th century brought with it our own age of enlightenment, we have found our way to the notion that there are inalienable and inherent “rights” bestowed on all. Dignity stands among those rights as a demand that we are worthy of ethical, moral and respectful treatment.

So far, and for the last almost 300 years or so, we have all managed to agree on these fundamental tenants.

But as with many things, we gild the lily to the point that it is really not so much a lily as an object of gilding. Dignity is so broadly defined that it now demands attention almost in any circumstance that includes we humans. In fact, some extend the thinking to animals, plants and the animate and inanimate environment around us.

OK, is it necessarily a bad thing to live a life dedicated to the general respectful treatment of the world around us?

Still, if dignity, or anything, becomes inure to all things then what does it really mean? If there is dignity in work, can there be dignity in not working? If there is dignity in honesty, can there be dignity in guile? Is there dignity in doing the right thing, quietly and without fanfare? Still, too, is there dignity in doing the right thing publicly for all to see? It is all a bit confusing.

If we progress to a fully dignified place, how do we reconcile our disagreements without being, well, undignified? Perhaps it is best not to dignify that question with an answer.

Nirvana: A survivor’s tale Commentary by Danielle Wilson Last weekend was a travesty, people. Doo and I were forced to spend the Saturday before Christmas in a swanky HUMOR hotel in Louisville, without our precious little angels. Can you imagine? We drove two whole hours to celebrate with my family and they could only muster enough air mattresses for our kids.

Such bull.

This stupid arrangement meant we had to leave the party early, before we could help clean up after 15 grandchildren. The Uber driver wasn’t going to wait forever to whisk us off to the dreaded, marble-clad Omni, so we karaoked one Adele song and snuck out the back. After checking in, we wandered around the dump and discovered its 1920sinspired Speakeasy Bar. White-coated servers mixing cocktails and pouring bourbon alongside a charming two-lane bowling alley? The horror! Even worse, our room had two beds. That’s right, Doo and I had to

sleep separately, tolerating six down-filled pillows each and an absurdly heavy but nottoo-hot comforter. Very disappointing.

In the morning, I was stuck eating French toast and eggs perfectly cooked over-easy across from Doo, commenting on the industrial-loft feeling as we perused newspapers and sipped coffee. Ridiculous.

The kicker of this nightmare? I wrote this piece alone in a quiet space called “The Library,” next to a fireplace and surrounded by wall-to-wall bookshelves, black-and-white photos and tufted velvet settees. Think Restoration Hardware meets Maker’s Mark.

Truly uninspiring.

I hope at least part of your holiday was as awful as mine.

Editor, Now that the hustle and bustle of the holidays are behind us, I want to remind area owners within homeowners associations of issues that could pose more direct challenges to everyday lives than could any federal politician.

This is a sequel to my May 26 letter, in which I pointed out that HOA boards of directors, their hired property management companies and their specialized legal counsel, who are part of an international organization called Community Associations Institute, often wield their powers with little accountability.

CAI may attempt to persuade homeowners to sign away their rights without realizing what is occurring.

One partner of the five largest CAI firms wrote a blog post in August advocating updating older HOA articles, bylaws and covenants, producing a more streamlined set of guidelines.

On the surface, this makes sense, but don’t be hoodwinked. The actual agenda may be to add language that inhibits homeowners’ rights. Changes could involve additional fees and stricter architectural covenants.

If your HOA is considering the implementation of such a modernization process, examine it skeptically and consider the motives of those behind the scenes. More clarity usually means more revenue from intrusive fees and lawsuits to feed the bureaucratic beast.

Until recently, I didn’t realize that instead of using my sausage fingers to text a message, I can press this tiny HUMOR microphone symbol and then simply talk into my phone.

Magically, the words are transcribed. Am I that stupid? No, I’m 71.

The discovery of this simple feature has changed my life. No longer do I send messages that say things like: “I gat your email anf hipe to see yiu doon.”

“Wait, don’t you have spellcheck?” you might ask. I don’t use spellcheck. If I type principal instead of principle, it doesn’t get corrected and it makes me seem ignorant when I text a friend saying, “I stand up for my principals.” It looks like I’m complimenting local school officials.

The other day I was in my home office texting my friend, Bob, and I said into the phone, “Can we meet at Starbucks tomorrow?” As the text was being transcribed, my wife heard me from upstairs and thought I was talking to her.

“Dick, why are we meeting at Starbucks tomorrow?”

I yelled upstairs, “I wasn’t talking to you! You and I are not going to Starbucks tomorrow.”

My message read: “Can we meet at Starbucks, tomorrow? I wasn’t talking to you.

You and I are not going to Starbucks tomorrow.” Then, I accidentally sent the text. I got this back from Bob: “Dick, are we meeting at Starbucks or not? And if you aren’t talking to me, why are we getting together?”

I texted back and told Bob that I was actually talking to my wife but the text said that I was not talking to Mary Ellen, so Bob thinks she and I aren’t on speaking terms.

See how rumors get started?

This morning, Mary Ellen overheard me saying this into my phone: “Hey it’s me exclamation point I’d like to get together Monday dot dot dot Will that work for you question mark.”

WAC “That is so strange,” she said from the kitchen. “I know you are a grammar nut, but I just heard you talking and punctuating your own speech.”

I hollered back, “I do not want to talk about this ever again. Period.”

Zionsville-based retailer Lids Sports Group has been sold by its parent company, Genesco, to ACQUISITION FanzzLids Holdings, a holding firm operated by an affiliate of Ames Watson Capital, for $100 million cash. The Maryland-based company also owns sports retailer Fanzz.

The deal is expected to close in early 2019.

In a statement, Genesco Chairman, President and CEO Robert Dennis said the company was pleased to have reached an agreement to sell Lids to a buyer with experience in the licensedsports industry.

“Under new ownership, the very talented team at Lids will continue to have the opportunity to realize the potential in this business,” Dennis said. “We look forward to closing the transaction and devoting the full attention of Genesco’s

management team to the opportunities we see in a footwear-focused company.”

Genesco, based in Nashville, Tenn., announced in February it planned to sell Lids, which has seen declining sales in recent quarters. The company makes and markets merchandise for top sports leagues around the world.

Lids operates 1,116 stores, including 119 Locker Room by Lids locations in Macy’s. The store count is down 10 percent from January 2017.

Two years ago, Lids built a $22 million, 150,000-square-foot headquarters in Zionsville. In June 2017, Lids had more than 9,000 employees, including 471 in Zionsville.

Lids, which got its start as Hat World in 1995, had been Genesco’s most successful subsidiary for several years after it was acquired in 2004. It has struggled in recent years after attempting to diversify into apparel and equipment for youth and school sports teams.

The sale of Lids will allow Genesco to focus on its footwear business.

Berg details story for rock ’n’ roll in Palladium performance

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Neil Berg might be better known for his Broadway work and his “100 Years of Broadway” tour.

MUSICAL However, the composer/ lyricist has ties to the rock ’n’ roll world, so doing “50 Years of Rock and Roll” seemed a natural progression.

Berg will bring the show to the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel at 8 p.m. Jan. 12.

“It’s been a lifetime of work,” Berg said.

“I probably researched it for a year before I did it.”

Berg said the show had some test runs and then he launched it in 2017.

“It’s been incredibly well received,” Berg said. “It’s been heartening to see people respond so passionately to this creation.”

Berg said he had a dual path coming out of college, touring with a band called Joe D’Urso & Stone Caravan. The band has opened for groups like Stray Cats and Steppenwolf.

“After my Broadway career took off, I was asked to be the musical director for the 100th anniversary of the Harley-Davidson tour (in 2013),” Berg said. “They played speedways. They had huge rock concerts.

I was out with bands like Aerosmith, The Doors reunion, Ted Nugent, Journey, you name it. There were a lot of top acts from the ’60s and ’70s.”

Berg said his background is storytelling.

“That’s the Broadway side of me,” Berg said. “I felt the best thing to do was do it chronologically. We start at the beginning of the Delta blues of Robert Johnson. We go through the great musical influences, the gospel blues of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, jump jive of Louis Jordan, then we get into Jimmy Preston and Ike Turner’s ‘Rocket 88.’ People come to the show and they are learning something they didn’t know. The average rock ’n’ roll fan had no idea these influences got them there.”

Eventually, the journey takes Berg to Bill Haley and the Comets and the explosion of rock ’n’ roll. Berg serves as narrator.

“I have the best performers in the world performing the music authentically,” he said. “These are Broadway stars who specialize in rock and roll. That helps us tell the story very well.”

The story goes from 1931 to 1981.

“In my opinion, those 50 years ended with the death of John Lennon in 1980 and culminated the next year with the beginning of MTV, which was more about video than the music,” Berg said. “It’s a good place to stop. Obviously, disco had taken over a lot of charts and radio air play in the late ’70s. We do the real history. It went so well we’ve been invited back to every single venue.”

Berg has added a Part 2 for venues that have already hosted Part 1. It covers the same time period but with different musical selections.

“There is only so much you can do in a 2

1/2-hour show,” Berg said.

Part 1 is what people will most expect with a few exceptions to make sure the story is authentic, Berg said.

Berg doesn’t like medleys, but he takes out the repetitive parts of songs.

“We do the beginnings and endings, but we may not repeat every verse and chorus,” he said.

The show includes Brook Wood, who graduated from Warren Central High School in Indianapolis. He also has toured with Berg’s Broadway show.

“This show is just loads of fun,” Wood said. “People sing along, dance in the aisles and get to take a walk down memory lane.

We perform all the hit numbers of these decades, so rarely will you hear a song you don’t know. I sing about eight tunes.

I’d have to say my favorite is ‘Piece of My Heart’ by the incomparable Janis Joplin.”

Drew Petersen’s career has been on the rise since he made his Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall debut at age 5.

Petersen, winner of the 2017 American Pianists Award and recipient of the Christel DeHaan Classical Fellowship, will perform a solo recital at 3 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

Although I love barbecue as much as the next person, I think it’s important to have an offering for different tastes, and Big Hoffa’s does.

I ordered The Captain. It reminds me of poutine. French fries rest atop pulled chicken and creamy macaroni and cheese. Buffalo sauce and ranch dressing are drizzled on top. You’ll need a fork and several napkins to eat these, but it’s so worth it. Be sure to add a generous helping of pickles on the side.

Blueprint for Improvement: Northern Indianapolis condo expansion Commentary by Larry Greene

The goal was to take the two neighboring condos and create one cohesive and modernized home.

1. One of the largest changes was opening up the wall between one of the kitchens and the existing dining room. The change also allowed more natural light and ultimately made the kitchen feel larger.

2. The cabinets were updated and functional storage solutions were incorporated.

3. Countertops were replaced with quartz and a waterfall butcher block countertop was added around the wine fridge for a unique focal point.

4. The doorways to the hallway and dining area were expanded to create more of an open concept.

5. The project also included a second kitchen and multiple bathroom updates. Details on the rest of the project can be found in the next Blueprint for Improvement.

Background Info: This condo in the Olde Mill neighborhood of northern Indianapolis was built in the late ’80s and was a unique project. The homeowners owned two neighboring condos and wanted to create one space to have more room for visiting family and friends.

BEFORE PROBLEMS The neighboring condos were small and divided. There were two kitchens that were dated and felt dark and confined.

The bathrooms had never been updated and lacked functionality.
