Westfield creates capital improvement plan

The City of Westfield is prioritizing its list of public works projects over the next several years.

Johnathon Nail, director of public works, presented the Westfield City Council with a preview of the city’s eight-year, $186 million capital improvement during their meeting April 22. Nail said public works staff have been working closely with the mayor’s office to budget and plan projects to keep up with growth.

“This plan looks ahead through 2032,” Nail said. “The plan remains tax neutral, so we are funding these projects through a variety of our revenue streams in public works. That includes cash from the general fund, Motor Vehicle Highway Fund, local roads and streets funds, park impact fees,

road impact fees and (general obligation) bonds, among other sources of revenue.”

Nail discussed 26 established projects and 26 future projects.

The established projects are already at the design phase or further, including four parks projects, 13 road projects, three roundabouts and three trail projects. Established projects are slated for 2024

through 2027 and include $21.7 million for reconstruction and streetscaping on Ind. 32 through the heart of Westfield. That project is funded through a 50/50 partnership with INDOT.

The list also includes $9.9 million to construct a tunnel bringing the Monon Trail under 161st Street. Additional projects include roundabouts at 161st Street and Springmill Road, 181st Street and Wheeler Road and 151st and Towne Road, various road widening projects and $7 million in improvements at Simon Moon Park.

The additional 26 projects identify future plans that have been assigned preliminary time frames, construction timelines and potential funding sources. That list includes 15 road projects, 10 roundabouts and one trail project. The estimated combined total of those 26 projects is

$129.1 million between 2024 and 2032.

“We are actively working on design for 191st Street from Tomlinson Road to Grand Park Boulevard. That’s a four-lane widening to help alleviate some of the congestion we’re seeing getting into Grand Park,” Nail said, adding that additional plans to continue the widening project west to Springmill Road are also a priority.

A roundabout at Grand Park Boulevard and 181st Street is the top-ranked roundabout within that list.

The future project list also includes $5.5 million to build a pedestrian bridge to bring the Monon Trail over 191st Street.

“(This is) addressing safety before safety problems really present themselves; we want to try to be proactive when it comes to safety in Westfield,” Nail said.

The project list is amendable, to allow for changes in priorities as necessary. Total cost is also variable, as the city seeks funding sources including grants, county contributions and cost sharing.

“We’re going to be actively looking to reduce costs where we can and get help for the costs from grants and other opportunities as needed,” Nail said.

Nail said the ranking list is based predominantly on community concerns and discussions with staff and city officials. Mayor Scott Willis said the plan will address infrastructure needed for future growth as well as quality of life for Westfield residents.

The city is working to create an interactive map for the website, westfield.in.gov, where residents can get up-to-date information on the capital improvement plan.

Used bike sale and donation day – Recycled Cycles will host a used bicycle sale and donation day from 10 a.m. until noon May 18 at their repair shop, 810 E. Main St. in Westfield north of Big Hoffa’s Barbecue. Several bicycles in good condition will be offered for sale at reduced prices. Proceeds from the sale will go toward the purchase of parts to repair additional bicycles. In 2023, Recycled Cycles repaired and gave away more than 375 bicycles to deserving families in Hamilton County. The group repairs both youth and adult bicycles year-round under the sponsorship of Good Samaritan Network of Hamilton County. Donations of any used bicycle no matter the condition will be accepted, as parts of unrepairable bikes are salvaged to make whole bikes. Payment by check is preferred.

Westfield Washington Township and the Westfield Washington Public Library have collaborated to rebrand the Our Westfield Washington Network guide, a quarterly newsletter of events and happenings in the township.

According to township trustee Jamie Goetz Mills, the partnership will provide the community with even greater access to valuable resources.

“This collaboration exemplifies our shared commitment to serving the needs of our residents and offering a wide range of programs,” Goetz Mills stated.

The collaboration comes prior to the grand opening of the new library building. The township will move from its offices at E. Greyhound Pass to office and meeting space at the library, 17400 Westfield Blvd.

The OWWN Guide was previously produced by Westfield Washington Township and has undergone changes to become

a comprehensive guide for both organizations, including information on a wide range of activities and events.

Hamilton County deputies, first responders, rescue woman

A woman was rescued April 30 from her partially submerged vehicle by Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office deputies, an Indiana Conservation Officer and first responders from the White River and Jackson fire departments.

According to a news release from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were dispatched to 296th Street and Carpenter Road in northern Hamilton County following a report of a vehicle upside down and submerged in a culvert.

“It was determined that the occupant was still inside the vehicle and unable to be extricated due to the windows being submerged,” the news release stated.

“Without regard for their personal safety, Deputy Rick Hay, Deputy Scott Hazel and DNR Conservation Officer Billy Doss removed their personal safety equipment, entered the water and worked to extricate the victim.”

A winch from a responding fire apparatus helped to angle the vehicle upward and move a window out of the water, and one of the responders was able to break the window.

In a bodycam video from the rescue, the woman can be heard stating that she was the only occupant. She was concerned about getting out through the window, but rescuers assured her that that her head would not be submerged during the process.

The unidentified woman insisted on responders taking her purse before she positioned herself to go through the window.

“Without these measures taken by the first responders, the outcome for the victim could have been much worse and likely have resulted in a drowning,” the news release stated.

According to the news release, the woman, whose age was not provided, received treatment at the scene and was taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Mecum’s Spring Classic revs up

The event was scheduled to start May 10 and will conclude May 18 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. The Spring Classic is the event Mecum started with in 1988 and then moved from Illinois to the Indiana State Fairgrounds in 2008.

Since then, consignments have grown to 2,600 consignments and $113 million in sales at the Spring Classic in 2023.

“We’ve now taken over the entire Fairgrounds, every building and every parking lot,” Murtaugh said. “We use the infield of the track for parking. The rest of the facili-

This year’s Spring Classic will include 37 collections and an estimated 3,000 consignments. Mecum’s Indy Fall Special is set for Oct. 3-5.

The Westfield Lions Club’s semi-annual Poker for Sight Texas Hold ‘em tournament raised funds benefiting several local organizations. The event took place the last weekend of April at the Hamilton County 4H Building. Approximately 300 players competed for $25,000 in prize money, including $10,000 for the winner.

DONATIONS

During the event, the Westfield Lions presented $1,500 each to Chairs of Honor, the Indiana Diabetes Youth Camp, the Indiana Blind Children’s Foundation and Third Phase.

This year’s $10,000 winner was Brian Sprague, who took home the grand prize for the second time. Sprague was the winner of the spring 2010 tournament.

Proceeds from the event allow the Westfield Lions Club to donate funds to various charities and organizations. The Lions also provide scholarships to several

Westfield High School seniors, grants to help fund school trips for students, dictionaries for Westfield Washington Schools third-graders and funds for many other school-affiliated classes and activities.

AES 500 Festival Parade

Marching bands from Westfield and Zionsville are among 15 bands from across the nation that will participate in the May 25 AES 500 Festival Parade in downtown Indianapolis.

The Pride of Westfield, directed by Westfield High School’s Director of Performing Arts Andrew Muth, and the National Band Association’s Indiana All-Star Band of Zionsville, directed by Mickey Stisher, will both take part.

This is the 68th year of the parade. Westfield and Zionsville will join Hoosier marching bands from Brownsburg, Indianapolis, Speedway, Muncie, West Lafayette, Pendleton, Russiaville and Washington, as well as bands from Michigan, Illinois, Mississippi and the Marine Band San Diego. The bands will perform for more than 200,000 spectators that line the 1.5-mile route of the AES 500 Festival Parade

One of the nation’s largest and most-respected parades, the celebration features giant floats, balloons and celebrities. All 33 drivers competing in the Indy 500 will also participate.

Westfield seniors receive scholarship dollars

Two Westfield High School seniors have been awarded $1,000 each from the Westfield Youth Sports Inc. inaugural Tucker Swain Memorial Scholarship program.

The WYSI scholarship committee selected Cara Snedeker and Preston Tamm as this year’s recipients. Snedeker will attend Butler University in the fall while Tamm plans to attend Manhattan College. Both recipients are former participants of WYSI. The scholarship honors the memory of Tucker Swain and supports the academic pursuits of its recipients. Tucker, a vibrant third-grade student who attended Oak Trace Elementary School, died in 2023 at age 9 after he was struck by a car. The scholarship represents the lasting mark he left on the community with his kindness, intelligence, humor and creativity. Tucker was actively involved in WYSI sports, including baseball, basketball and football.

Noblesville senior a powerful presence at the plate

Gabby Fowler has been flexing her power for the Noblesville High School softball team.

“Since arriving as a freshman, Gabby has always been a competitor and has been exceptional at this game,” Millers coach Deke Bullard said.

“She also does a ton of work outside the field. She has athletic weights through the school as well and does other training, including Raymer Strength.”

Through the first 17 games this year, the senior third baseman was hitting .519 with 10 home runs and 28 RBIs.

“I think what we are seeing is her offthe-field work all coming together this year,” Bullard said of her high batting average.

Fowler’s career batting average heading into the season was .472. She holds the school career record for home runs with 44. She had a single-season record of 15

last year. The state record for home runs is 50 by Bremen’s Erin Coffel (2017-19).

“My biggest improvement over the course of my career has been my mental approach to the game,” Fowler said. “Of course, the extra training and hours in the cages have helped, but I’ve seen a major difference in the player I am from a mental perspective and enjoying the game through ups and downs.”

Fowler has primarily played third base for the Millers, but also played catcher for the Indy Dreams 18-and-under travel team.

The Millers are looking to win their third sectional title in Fowler’s four years.

“Winning back-to-back sectional titles is something that has helped me become the

player I am today,” she said. “Being introduced to a tournament environment my freshman year taught me the importance of being a team player and supporting everyone, no matter what. That team was full of amazing role models that showed me how to be a leader and become what they were. Winning my sophomore year was also super special because no one expected us to win. We were the underdogs that year and were able to come together and accomplish our goals. My goal for this team is to win sectionals and make a long run in the tournament.”

Fowler’s personal goals are to break her single-season home run record and continue to be a leader for her teammates.

Fowler will play for East Carolina University next season.

“When I started the recruiting process, I knew I wanted to go south,” she said. “I looked at multiple schools in the Carolinas, and after many camps, I decided on East Carolina. The coaches and team created an amazing atmosphere that I really wanted to be a part of. When I went on my visit, I also fell in love with the beautiful campus and the culture around ECU sports.”

Local golfers to compete in LPGA qualifying tourney

Golfers from Westfield and Zionsville will participate in the Epson Tour — the LPGA’s qualifying tour — June 10-16 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus.

The Otter Creek Championship is one of two new events on the Epson Tour, and will showcase the next generation of the world’s best female golfers, including Annabelle Pancake of Zionsville and Cailyn Henderson of Westfield. The women will be competing for a prize purse of $300,000.

Pancake is a senior at Clemson University, where in 2023 she was named to the All-ACC team for the first time, ranked in the top 125 in the nation.

Henderson is a 2022 graduate of the University of Indianapolis, where she was a 2020 WGCA All-America Second Team,

two-time WGCA All-East Region, two-time All-GLVC, two-time, WGCA All-American Scholar and two-time Academic All-GLVC.

The weeklong Otter Creek Championship will feature 144 players from more than 30 countries.

Local communities receive state funding for roads — Communities in Hamilton County have received funds for improving roads and bridges through the state’s Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. A total of 252 communities across the state will receive over $207 million. Through the program, Hamilton County will receive $1.5 million.

Miracle League of Westfield provides opportunities for people with disabilities

In January 2023, fundraising efforts began in Westfield to create an adaptive baseball field for people with disabilities.

More than a year later, the owners of Roundtripper Sports Academy are close to having a dedicated field at their sports complex at 16708 Southpark Dr. as Miracle League of Westfield athletes finish up their second season.

Miracle League is an international nonprofit that provides people with disabilities the opportunity to play baseball. Miracle League has more than 250 leagues in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada. But so far, there are no dedicated Miracle League baseball fields in the state of Indiana.

“Our goal is to be the first official Miracle League in the state of Indiana with a fully accessible baseball field,” said Jenna Hoffman, volunteer with Miracle League of Westfield. “The mission of Miracle League is to give every person, no matter their abilities, the opportunity to play baseball, ages 0 to 99.”

Hoffman and other volunteers partnered with Sue and Chris Estep, owners of Roundtripper, to help make that dream a reality. In January 2023, the organization held a kickoff fundraising event, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of Roundtripper. The event got the fundraising ball rolling, and last year they were able to host their first season.

“We’ll do a four-week league every spring and fall right now, and then we’ll adjust as the number of kids are added,” Sue Estep said. “As the league grows, we can do both a competitive and a noncompetitive. Our league is noncompetitive now, but there are definitely some kids that you can see would thrive in a little bit more of a competitive league. Our goal is to get to that point.”

Hoffman said players in Westfield’s league range in age from 3 to 19, but the plan is to establish leagues based on age group and ability.

“Some kids want to play real baseball, but because of whatever their ability is, they’re not able to play in a typical recre-

ation league,” Hoffman said. “But what we can offer is a competitive league for those kids as well as a league for adults and so on.”

Miracle League of Westfield held its inaugural season in fall 2023 with 25 participants. This spring, the league doubled in size — from two teams initially to four — mostly thanks to word of mouth.

“We want to slowly learn as we grow, but the interest is always high,” Hoffman said.

For Hoffman, the league is as much personal as it is a volunteer opportunity. Her daughter, 8-year-old Londyn Hoffman, was born with a disability and was diagnosed three years ago with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer of the soft tissue. In remission for nearly 18 months, Londyn is a 2024 Riley

“My husband and I have deep roots in baseball. It’s just a big part of our family,” Hoffman said. “So, three or four years ago we came to Chris and Sue and just kind of had an idea … and here we are.”

In its first two seasons, Miracle League of Westfield played games on the indoor field at Roundtripper. But the goal of fundraisingis to convert the outdoor softball field to a multi-use surface that can be used by Miracle League players as well as softball players.

“That will allow us to separate out and run two leagues simultaneously,” Estep said.

So far, Estep said they have raised $200,000 to put toward the new surface,

GIVING BACK TO MIRACLE LEAGUE

Miracle League of Westfield is engaged in ongoing fundraising efforts to help pay for the new field surface, most recently as the recipient of $2,500 from the Westfield Lions Club annual breakfast. The fundraising goal recently hit the $200,000 mark.

This year, Miracle League of Westfield will be one of the beneficiaries of the second SWING presented by Krieg DeVault, a signature charity event ben-

efiting Indianapolis Indians Charities.

The event takes place Sept. 27 at Victory Field in Indianapolis, and will feature local restaurants, bars and entertainment, along with a red carpet, photo booths and dancing under the lights.

which will be retrofitted onto the outdoor softball field to include removing the infield, compacting the dirt underneath, then adding a new hybrid turf field. Since Miracle League fields are smaller than standard youth diamonds, the accessible field will take up most of the infield of the softball field after the conversion.

“We put a lot of the work in already, so we’re not starting from an open field,” Estep said. “We already have drainage, we already have a lot of that infrastructure there, so it makes this conversion much more affordable. As the league grows, we’ll take it as far as the demand. We really want to get up and running, because we feel like once we get this in place, that’s where we’ll hopefully be able to do divisions within the league.”

Hoffman said a big part of Miracle League of Westfield’s success the first two seasons has been thanks to volunteers, affectionately known as “Angels in the Outfield.”

“Sometimes, it seems like the volunteers get more out of it than the players do in just that 45-minute experience,” Hoffman said. “And it’s nice to get the parents the opportunity to be in the stands and their child is participating in an actual baseball game. Let the volunteers do their thing, the parents’ job is to just sit there and watch.”

Although most of the league is Westfield-based, participants also come from Noblesville and Zionsville. The league hopes that as the organization grows, it can attract players from across central Indiana.

“The families just want to see their kids be a part of something that otherwise there just aren’t many opportunities out there,” Hoffman said.

The tentative dates for the fall season are Sept. 8, Sept. 15, Sept. 22 and Sept. 29. Parents will fill out a questionnaire at signup for the all-volunteer staff to understand their child’s needs.

No sugar-coating the peril

In the world of unhealthy choices, there are some overachievers. Starbucks offers to start our day with the 590-calorie White Hot Chocolate. Happily, according to its pitch, we will find it to be “creamier than creamy,” and standing in line to get it probably burns a few of those calories. And if an average U.S. female can consume less than 2,000 calories per day, taking down 30 percent of the gross amount for the 24 hours might not be too bad if she evens out her remaining intake with something abundant with a few more redeeming qualities. Broccoli?

ESSAY

The reigning and unchallenged champion of excess goes to the Triple Stacker King from Burger King at 1,370 calories for the sandwich. Add to it fries weighing in at 434 calories and a Coca-Cola at 507, and she’ll hit 2,311 — or 116 percent of the daily allowance. Sure, most of us don’t choke down the gut-busting combo meal daily. So, let’s go with the regular cheeseburger with medium french fries and cola. How bad could that be? It turns out that it’s not so good

Hardee’s Fried Chicken 12-Piece and Biscuits should feed a family of four with its 6,490 calories, making the meal 1,735 per person if Junior eats as much as Dad. If he can’t and Dad picks up the slack, then Dad’s number will be higher. If Dad is average, he can afford to ingest 2,700 or so. He’d have room left over for a trip to Starbucks. Fast food is not the only culprit packing our waistline. Cheesecake Factory serves a single-portion pasta with a 3,209-calorie wallop. Add the truffle cake for 1,770. If we are surrounded with sugar-coated peril, how do we navigate?

The Wolfsies belong to a wonderful congregation. The Heartland Universalist Unitarian Church is warm and welcoming. I wouldn’t fix a thing.

More to the point, I can’t fix a thing. Yet, that’s exactly what they asked me to do. Last week, there was a sign-up sheet posted for some opportunities to spiff up different aspects of the building. My wife Mary Ellen and I wanted to help, but while jotting down our names on a sign-up sheet to help in the garden, the new head of the building committee approached me looking for some additional help with some needed repairs.

“Say, Dick, can you help us replace a broken window?”

“Sorry, I don’t have a clue how to do that.”

“Any experience with electricity?”

“Bulbs. I can change bulbs.”

“How about plumbing? Can you assist with that?”

“I don’t have a prayer.”

I had to be careful. I used to belong to a temple back in New York. Jewish people have a blessing for everything, and I didn’t want to find out that I did have a prayer for plumbing.

“How about just cleaning?” he asked. My wife was on my side with this one.

“He doesn’t even know how to do that at home,” she volunteered.

Mary Ellen loves to volunteer. What a trouper.

Why is repairing things so difficult for me? Growing up, everyone in my family was more adept at this kind of stuff. My father, for example, could fix anything. He’d go downstairs to his workshop with a broken vase or an electric can opener on the fritz and an hour later emerge from the basement to flaunt his success. How about

some credit for me? Where would Dad have attained all that experience if I hadn’t busted this stuff to begin with?

My uncle back in New York was accused of fixing an election for a city councilman. And my sister? Well, she spent most of her free time fixing up her friends. Even our dogs were fixed. Fixing is in the Wolfsie blood. Everyone had some kind of repair skill but me. That’s a tough fix to be in.

I used to have a great handyman. He installed our ceiling fan, rescreened the porch and patched up the leak in our roof. He charged $50 an hour. “Unless you help me,” he’d say, “then it’s $65.”  Now that he’s gone, my wife’s favorite expression is, “You need to call somebody.” So, I call the plumber, the electrician, the roofer, the computer repairman. Yes, I can’t fix a darn thing, so I pay these guys at least 100 bucks an hour.

Here’s a word of warning. If you are like me and can’t fix anything, you will end up broke.

Feinstein pays tribute to Tony Bennett with Palladium concert

As founder of the Great American Songbook Foundation, Michael Feinstein has a great appreciation for Songbook Hall of Fame member Tony Bennett.

Feinstein became friends with the legendary vocalist, who died at age 96 in July 2023.

Feinstein, artistic director for the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel will present “Because of You: My Tribute to Tony Bennett” at 8 p.m. May 17 at the Palladium at the Center. Feinstein, who will be joined by Carnegie Hall Big Band, shared some thoughts of the tribute and his relationship with Bennett.

How special is it to do the tribute to Tony Bennett given your close personal relationship?

I would not have been able to achieve what I do if it weren’t for the individuals who preceded me and imparted their knowledge, one of whom was Tony Bennett. I had the privilege of knowing Tony personally — I once had the opportunity to sing with him and I spent time with him socially, along with his wife, Susan. Thus, being able to express gratitude and celebrate his legacy, as well as to discover different and novel ways to interpret his music, presents a significant challenge because he’s not just an icon. He is a legend.

Continuing his music for new generations in “Because of You: My Tribute to Tony Bennett” holds great importance to me and our audiences, an importance I know Tony shared because of his dedication to the arts and educating the youth about music. Bringing the production to Carmel is incredibly special because of everything the city, the people, our foundation and venue mean to me. Indiana is home, and to borrow from “The Wizard of Oz,” there’s no place like home. Therefore, I am doing this not only for myself but also in honor of Tony, espe-

cially because of you.

Can you describe how important Tony’s contributions are to the history of the Great American Songbook?

Tony Bennett’s work has left a significant mark on the Great American Songbook, making timeless classics shine even brighter. His songs, ranging from the iconic “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” to the uplifting “The Best is Yet to Come,” show his unique ability to bring freshness and depth to well-loved tunes.

Whether he’s delivering the smooth elegance of “Fly Me to the Moon” and “The Way You Look Tonight” or the heartfelt simplicity of “Smile,” Bennett’s performances are a showcase of his emotional depth and commitment to the music. His impact on American music is undeniable, ensuring that these songs will be cherished by future generations.

Do you have personal favorites of Bennett that have particular meaning?

For the Tony tribute, I’m performing the songs associated with him, including a lot of the Cy Coleman pieces, like “The Best is Yet to Come,” which he introduced, and “I Want to Be Around,” which Tony also made famous. Of course, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” will be included, along with Gershwin songs because his first commercial

record featured Gershwin’s work. Then, songs associated with people he worked with, like Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Sophie Tucker, will be part of the repertoire. So, it’s going to be an overview of his career through all of that music.

Do you share stories and anecdotes of your time with Tony?

The first time I met Tony Bennett was in 1983. I was doing a benefit with Rosemary Clooney and Tony was asked to participate. I remember talking to him on the phone first because he wanted to perform some unknown Gershwin songs that I had access to, thanks to my work with Mr. Gershwin — Ira Gershwin. Then, I met Tony in ‘83 backstage at the concert, and he was great. Being a young kid who knew his world, I knew his music and the songwriters, so it was easy for us to start talking and become friends.

Do you have other appearances planned with the tribute?

“Because of You: My tribute to Tony Bennett” will be performed nationwide and there are plans underway for the show to cross the pond to the U.K., Europe and beyond. We have a rather full calendar in the United States. The specifics will be announced at a later date.

IWS founder’s final concert set

For his final concert as Indiana Wind Symphony’s music director, Charles Conrad picked his own exit number.

Conrad chose Ottorino Respighi’s “Pines of Rome.”

“It’s the big blowout finale,” Conrad said. “It’s the ultimate concert ender. It features the entire ensemble.”

The Indiana Wind Syphmony’s “Finales and Fanfare” is set for 6:30 p.m. May 19 at the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

Jay Gephart, who will replace Conrad, will serve as a guest conductor on a piece.

“It has been a real pleasure to serve as a guest conductor for the Indiana Wind Symphony this spring, particularly as I transition into the position of music director for next season,” Gephart said. “We all owe Charlie Conrad a debt of gratitude for his vision in creating the Indiana Wind

Symphony. I am honored to follow in his footsteps.”

Conrad, 70, said he’s comfortable retiring from the symphony he founded in 1997.

“I’m sure I’ll guest conduct some places,” Conrad said. “The main thing I want to do in retirement is go hear a lot of concerts and do a lot of traveling. I want to be free to spend a week at the Metropolitan Opera (in New York), hear three or four different shows and maybe catch a Broadway show.”

Conrad also plans to travel to Europe. He said, although not an official IWS act, he is taking 40-plus IWS musicians to Italy in July to perform a concert in Carmel’s sister city of Cortona.

The Carmel concert will include a John Philip Sousa march and the “First Suite of Holts.” The concert will include a “A Summer was Just Beginning,” which is about the career and untimely death of actor James Dean, from Fairmount, who died at age 24 in an automobile accident.

IBC will present “Phantom of the Opera” at 4 and 7 p.m. May 25 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

“When you watch a musical or movie, you can fall in love with the characters but want more than what you see that first time,” Yakovleva said. “As an artist, I tend to expand the stories of what I see. You can always create more background or imagine a different path the characters will take. As a dancer and choreographer, I also see everything in movement and want to express all these emotions and feelings in more impactful ways. ‘Phantom’ is one of those timeless stories that is so rich and layered with emotions that it begs for more — more dance, more exploration of feelings, more reactions. Former IBC student Morgan Rust, who grew up in Noblesville, returns to play the role of Christine.

“IBC is the place where all of my formative training took place,” Rust said. “I grew up with the teachers being family to me, so having them guide me at this stage of my career is an incredible blessing. It also comes with additional layers — I want them to see that all their emotional and physical investment in me is reaping benefits.”

Carmel resident Justin Hamilton, who is a high school senior who takes online classes, plays the Phantom.

“The biggest challenge while rehearsing for the production of “Phantom of the Opera’ is not only learning all the choreography, but also being able to find new ways to interpret the character and convince the audience who Phantom is and what he stands for,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton took a hiatus from ballet at age 13 in 2019 for three years. He returned to IBC in the summer of 2022. He will join the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago as a trainee after graduating.
