Brinegar addresses 2020 legislative goals

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Before discussing goals for the 2020 Indiana General Assembly legislative session, Indiana ChamCHAMBER ber of Commerce President Kevin Brinegar presented a history of Indiana’s business climate during the Dec. 13 chamber breakfast for all Hamilton County chambers at Conner Prairie.

Brinegar shared statistics from 2000-01 and compared them to today’s figures.

“We were the only state to suffer a net loss of technology jobs during the ‘dot-com’ boom from 1994 to 2000,” Brinegar said.

Indiana also ranked poorly in other areas, including job creation and growth, where it was 50th in 2000. The state was No. 1 in bankruptcies and home foreclosures, and the business tax climate was among the worst in the nation.

“What have we done to transform Indiana in the last 20 years?” Brinegar said. “The Indiana chamber’s response was to prepare and release our economic vision for 2010 in 2000. It was a 10-year economic action plan for the state, because at that time, the state had no plan. It set goals and metrics for moving Indiana out of the lower half.

“We embarked on a 20-year odyssey that I call our march out of mediocrity, and if you think about where we were in 2000, the term mediocrity is, frankly, generous.”

Today, Indiana’s business climate is significantly brighter. It is first in the nation for infrastructure, fourth for business friendliness, fourth for cost of doing business and second for software job growth, according to Brinegar.

“We have accomplished a lot in these last 20 years, but we are not finished,” Brinegar said.

Brinegar listed several areas where improvements can be made and noted how the General Assembly can help. Education attainment, per capita income, improving health metrics and increasing quality of place are among the ar-

eas he said the state can still grow.

To help improve education attainment, the General Assembly plans to spotlight Free Application for Federal Student Aid filings.

“Hoosiers are leaving a lot of money on the table by not filling out the FAFSA form. The rate of completion is the lowest in the Midwest states,” Brinegar said. “We think it ought to be a requirement with an opt-out option. This is not just for college, but for other training credentials.”

Brinegar also said the legislative session will focus on establishing a statewide energy plan.

“Indiana’s electricity supply dropped from 95 percent coal to 65 percent coal,” Brinegar said. “It caused our rank in electricity prices to go from fifth-lowest to now about 30th. We are doing a study on energy, on why that happened, where to go in the future and how can we have balance between renewables and lower cost and be strong for reliability.”

Brinegar voiced concern about the general state of Hoosiers’ health.

“Smoking in Indiana is 50 percent higher than the national average, and that costs businesses money,” he said.

Among other items, the General Assembly in 2020 will explore decreasing the state’s vaping and smoking rate by attempting to raise the legal smoking age from 18 to 21.

A monthly breakfast will be held at Conner Prairie throughout the legislative session. Cost is $20 for members of any Hamilton County chamber and $30 for nonmembers. For more, visit web.onezonecommerce.com.

Djour receives scholarship — Westfield High School senior Mahamat Djour was selected for a full four-year scholarship to the University of Notre Dame through the QuestBridge National College Match program. Students apply to the program to potentially be matched to one of 40 highly selective universities around the nation. Students can list up to 12 universities on their end, and then the colleges each choose the students they are interested in, and possible matches are made. Out of 14,926 applicants, only 1,127 students were chosen.

Westfield Democrats upcoming meeting — The Westfield Democrats will meet at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Westfield Washington Public Library, 333 W. Hoover St., in the community room. Check in begins at 6 p.m.

CUMC recognized — Christ United Methodist Church, 318 N. Union St., has been selected for the 2019 Best of Westfield Award in the community churches category by the Westfield Award Program.

Each year, the Westfield Award Program identifies companies or organization that have achieved marketing success.

F.C. Tucker stats — Westfield home buyers saw a price increase as homes spent less time on the market in November 2019. According to F.C. Tucker Company, the average sale price for homes in Westfield was $355,782, an increase of 2.8 percent from November 2018. Westfield homes also spent less time on the market – an average of 47 days, or 11 fewer days than November 2018. The average price per square foot increased 7.9 percent, to $145.94.

Monon bridge opening delayed until spring

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com The Monon pedestrian bridge crossing Ind. 32 won’t open until spring, but it will have CONSTRUCTION an unexpected amenity.

“We actually added a lighting package to the bridge after it was bid, which caused a redesign on the handrail, which is all custom fabricated, so the design of the handrail took a lot longer than anticipated,” Senior Project Manager Dustin Shoe said.

“So, we won’t get that delivered until February or March, and the contractor has to install the handrail before we can open the bridge up.”

Light bollards will be installed along the length of the bridge, with pole lights at each end of the bridge.

“Eventually, the whole Monon corridor from around State Road 32 up to Grand Park will be lit 24 hours a day,” Shoe said.

The lighting additions added to the cost of the project, but the contractor was still under budget compared to other bids.

The total cost is $4.2 million. Without the lighting, the project was anticipated to cost approximately $3.7 million. The project is funded by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization, so it was an 80-20 funding match.

The trail is open up to the bridge entrance. Pedestrians still can use the crosswalk on Ind. 32.

The Monon bridge project broke ground in November 2018.

“We have high hopes for mobility on this corridor, and anything we can do with lighting we will do to encourage people to travel between the two areas (Ind. 32 and Grand Park),” Communications Director Vicki Duncan Gardner said. “We really appreciate people being patient on this. I think the addition of the lighting package will be really nice, and it’s definitely been worth the wait from our standpoint.”

Cities offer options for Christmas tree disposal

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com When the holiday season ends, many families look for ways to dispose of live Christmas trees. Here is a list of disposal HOLIDAYS options for local residents: Westfield: Ray’s Trash Service will pick up one Christmas tree per household. The tree must be cut into 4-foot sections. Pickups will run from Dec. 26 to Jan. 17.

Carmel: Christmas tree pickup is included in the Carmel city trash pickup service at no additional cost. Cut Christmas trees in half and lay them next to the trash cart.

Zionsville: The Town of Zionsville offers no service for live Christmas tree disposal. Residents should call their trash service to inquire about options.

WWPL to include teens in program

Noblesville: Republic Services will collect Christmas trees from Dec. 26 until Jan. 10. Trees will be collected on the same day and in the same location as residents’ trash/recycle collection.

Trees must be cut into sections of no more than 4 feet per section and placed inside the trash cart so that the automated arm of the trucks can place them in the truck. Trees laying on the ground beside trash containers will not be collected. For more, call Republic Services at 317-567-6400.

Fishers: The City of Fishers offers a free tree recycling program sponsored

Hundreds benefit from local Christmas charity

By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com An agreement between a husband and wife to buy gifts for a struggling family inGIVING BACK stead of each other has flourished into something much larger after 15 years.

Last week, Secret Families Christmas Charity, an organization that delivers Christmas gifts to children in need, completed its mission of helping more than 400 families across central Indiana. Forty of those families, approximately 200 individuals, are in Hamilton County. The Hamilton County chapter of Secret Families started in 2014 with only eight families being served.

“Unlike the other counties we serve, Hamilton County fights the misconception that every resident is affluent,” said Tom Flanagan, “head elf” of Secret Families of Hamilton County.

“While the percentages look good in our community, there are over 10,000 children on free or reduced lunches in Hamilton County schools and over 12,000 people who fall below the poverty line. This is larger than the entire populations of eight Indiana counties.

“The stories of the families we help, which are provided to us from local

schools, range from the death of a parent to unplanned medical debt to sudden loss of a job, and the stories are not just isolated to a few corners of the county.”

On Dec. 14, shopping took place at Meijer in Noblesville, followed by gift wrapping at Wasson’s Nursery in Fishers. The gifts were then delivered.

Flanagan said although there is no set dollar amount per family (families range from 3 to 13 members), the average is approximately $550 per family and includes presents, a Meijer gift card to purchase a Christmas dinner and a decorated tree.

“There is no cap on families we serve aside from funding,” he said.

“Our largest chapter serves almost 400 families each year. We have far more families referred to us in Hamilton County than we can currently fund, and (we) would love to see this grow exponentially in the coming years.

“Christmas was a wonderful time for me and my wife when we were raising our children and now that we are raising our grandchildren. I cannot imagine as a parent having to say, ‘I’m sorry, but we can’t afford to have Christmas this year.’ This conversation takes place more often than people think each year in Hamilton County.”

Maple Glen nurse receives honor

Fairbanks joins Community — Fairbanks, which offers substance-use programs, will become part of Community Health Network by the end of 2019. The partnership will provide patients a more comprehensive approach to addiction and behavioral health services, including treatment for serious mental illness and a psychiatric intensive care unit. Patients will also have access to an expansive primary-care system and network of specialists which will improve coordination of care across all disciplines.

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Jeannie Langenkamp recently received the Indiana School Nurse of the Year honor from the Indiana Association of School Nurses. Langenkamp ACHIEVEMENT has been a school nurse for 27 years.

“It’s a passion of mine. I absolutely love my job. I love it so much,” she said. “I always tell people you have to find humor in each day, and that helps keep me motivated and stay positive in taking care of the kids. I feel like if you can help with a kind word or smile or listening ear, you can do so much for these kids.”

Langenkamp, the school nurse for Maple Glen Elementary, was nominated by Westfield Washington Schools Corp. Nurse Coordinator Teresa Layton. She nominated Langenkamp for creating diabetic kits at the school.

“I made diabetic kits for kids last year. We’ve been practicing all these lockdowns, and I worried about our diabetics,” she said. “If we happened to have a lockdown, they would be without supplies, so I came up with diabetic kits for teachers with supplies in case the diabetics get low (blood sugar).”

Langenkamp, a Carmel resident, is in her 14th year at Maple Glen. She previously worked as a school nurse in Ohio for 13 years. Prior to that, she worked 11 years as an

orthopedic nurse and a medical surgeon nurse.

Langenkamp received her award during the IASN conference in October. In June, she will attend the national conference in Las Vegas to be recognized again. Langenkamp also was recognized at the WWS December school board meeting.

Firefighter, pharmacist talk working holidays

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Westfield Fire Dept. firefighter/paramedic Brandon Taylor said working holidays is a requirement that takes some getting used COVER STORY to.

While many families get to spend time together during the holidays, some aren’t as fortunate when a loved one is required to work the actual holiday. Taylor, for example, works a 24-hour shift, which starts at 7 a.m., that sometimes requires him to miss special occasions like Christmas morning or Thanksgiving dinner.

However, many of Taylor’s family members are firefighters or paramedics, so he grew up around the schedule.

“Growing up, Christmas wasn’t the calendar day of the year I looked forward to,” Taylor said. “Christmas was the day my parents told me we were celebrating it. It’s not the calendar day of the year, it’s the memories you make and things you do with family and friends, and that can be done any day.”

Because Taylor is a firefighter and his wife, Shelbie, is a nurse, they frequently have nontraditional schedules and change the day they celebrate holidays.

Last year, Taylor worked Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s days. On those occasions, his WFD crew celebrated together.

“Our shift is very much a family-type culture. We spend a lot of time together and enjoy it,” Taylor said. “So, for instance, Thanksgiving in years past, our families come in and we all celebrate together and have a big meal. For Christmas, we don’t get each other gifts and sit around a tree, but we’ll probably cook a special meal for dinner and everyone helps cook.”

Taylor said veteran firefighters sometimes offer to work for younger colleagues who may have young children at home.

First responders, however, aren’t the only people who work on holidays. Pharmacists, such as Westfield resident Caitlin O’Dougherty, often work holiday shifts. O’Dougherty works at the CVS Pharmacy at 126th Street and Gray Road in Carmel.

macy closes, but O’Dougherty works Christmas Eve and worked on Thanksgiving. On holidays, her shifts are generally shorter and not as busy.

“Instead of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving, we are open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., so it is a shorter day, and usually for us, we are not terribly busy as far as the foot traffic in the store,” she said. “We do have all of our prescriptions that autofill to get through, so we stay busy because there’s 12 hours’ worth of work to do in five hours.

“Obviously, we are open because people do still get sick on Thanksgiving and do still need medication, so they have that opportunity to get here.”

Generally, O’Dougherty’s family sees a movie and

then eats around 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving.

“Ever since my brother and I were little, my mom would put the turkey in the oven and we would go see a movie, come back and have the turkey midafternoon,” she said. “So, we just postpone that a little bit when I’m working on holidays. This year, we went to the movies at 2:30 p.m. and then had a big meal in the afternoon. You figure out ways to work around it.”

O’Dougherty doesn’t consider working holidays a negative experience.

“We knew what we were getting into when we went into this field,” she said. “It’s not that bad.”

BUSY AROUND THE HOLIDAY SEASON Firefighter/paramedic Brandon Taylor said holidays aren’t any different than other days during the year when it comes to the fire department’s run load.

“Emergencies happen every day of the year.

It’s not a holiday for (emergencies),” he said. “So, there’s not specific types of runs. It is like every other day. The only thing that changes is in the Christmas season there’s more snow and ice (leading to more wrecks).”

For CVS Pharmacy pharmacist Caitlin O’Dougherty, the busiest day of the year is typically the day before Thanksgiving.

“The two days leading up to Thanksgiving and sometimes leading up to Christmas, it is a heavy travel time, so people are going out of town and wait until the last minute (to pick up their prescriptions), and it is one of the most awful days to work in a pharmacy,” she said.

To brighten the pre-holiday rush, O’Dougherty’s store does a Thanksgiving pitch-in the day before Thanksgiving.

“That way we have food there, and it’s a way to lighten the mood and bring the holiday spirit into a day everybody knows will be a little awful,” she said.

Earlier this month, Bloomberg Businessweek published a story querying if the state of Tennessee’s project to provide “free” college to any citizen who enrolls should be standard operating procedure across the nation. It sounds good.

So, how has it worked? Eligible Tennesseans apply about 80 percent of the time, but only a handful actually progress to enrolling in classes. Of those, nearly 20 percent drop out after one semester. Half quit by the end of three years.

Jobs, family obligations and a panoply of other distractions are cited for the disappointing stats.

The article rightly points out that money is not a magic wand. Socalled “wraparound services” are suggested to prop up the Tennessee Promise. Help finding day care, stable food, appropriate additional financial support and connection to tutoring are among the range of suggested benefits. There is some evidence that these may increase persistence, but no single one is sufficient to stop the bleeding and save the state.

Should more, or less, be expected from students trying to move their way up? Is it possible that our sympathy rather than expectant support reinforces the failure?

Certainly, folks need grit and encouragement from those they trust to overcome the challenges of life’s hardships. When are working, studying, car repairs and family relationships justifiably regarded as overwhelming, and when are they best described as commonly human, and therefore simply routine?

Commentary by Danielle Wilson I’ve finally gotten my holiday groove on, people! I’m just back from a 6 a.m. Meijer run, HUMOR followed by an hour at Kohl’s. With a generous serving of Amazon and a few swigs of merlot, I’m feeling quite good about Christmas. True, I’ve not yet written the annual family missive, nor have I mailed a single card.

But I’m not worried.

“Better late than never” is our family motto!

Now, if only my husband Doo would stop being such a Grinch. He’s been oscillating between “I don’t care if Maddie has dance, I’m vacuuming up this stupid tinsel” and “I can’t possibly get anything done if you keep nagging me about addressing envelopes.” That is why I’m stuffing my face with bourbon-soaked English fruitcake. I need a dense dessert to keep my potty-mouth in check.

I want to tell Doo to quit whining and go to the office if he needs to

work. Seriously, anyone here expecting to be left alone in the peace and quiet just days before Baby Jesus arrives is living in a winter wonderland.

This place is the Island of Misfit Toys, my friends. We have cats vomiting on rugs, cars breaking down, college kids up in my grill, and almost certainly a nasty flu virus lurking. Plus, I only finished teaching yesterday. Momma still has a ton of miracles to perform.

Let the reindeer games commence!

My point is, I need Doo to get on board my Polar Express — for him to take a moment to enjoy this crazy season, and more important, to revel in my spectacular purchasing prowess.

Also, we should probably get on the card thing. Peace out.

I need a dense dessert to keep my potty-mouth in check.

Editor, I try to avoid discussing politics as it is a no-win situation and feelings get hurt, but when something is so misguided, like the letter submitted by Carol Powell, I just felt it had to be pointed out.

You can argue about what Trump has achieved and policies and have a good debate, but when you tell me the man that has used the words ugly, nasty, ignorant, liar, despicable and Pocahontas to describe American men and women and leaders of allied nations, I must call nonsense. To the unlikely voter Editor, When America held its first congressional election in 1789, only about 6 percent of the population was eligible to vote. Wealthy white landowners enjoyed the privilege of sole access to democracy, and other Americans had to battle for their place through activism, sacrifice and the bloodshed of thousands over a nearly 200-year period.

Our founding was based upon the concept of self-government — the idea that a people should choose their own leaders. However, as a broader swath of Americans exercised their right, the privileged class became increasingly distressed by what our democracy produced. An expanded social safety net, demands for transparency and oversight of those in power and regulations protecting the safety and interests of everyday citizens all emerged as more Americans voted.

Desperate and fearing a total loss of control, the most powerful in our society began to erode civic life. In

the cynical hope that a public sickened by tribalism would recoil and thus freely surrender our hard-won right to vote, politicians reduced meaningful debate to petty procedural angling or dialed the rhetoric to 11, even over the smallest of matters. To be blunt, it worked — half of Americans do not vote, and many actively choose not to stay politically informed because the display is boring at best, and infuriating at worst.

Some scold our nonvoting neighbors, accusing them of not caring about our country. I reject that notion completely. Instead, I look with disgust at those who decided that demoralizing the public would meet their own ends, and who thus degraded what the Founders began and what so many citizens fought for.

If you are a nonvoter, I’ll just say this: Our democracy needs you, the sacrifices of our predecessors compel you, and our future is more in your hands than you know. Register and vote.

The following is one of my favorite holiday columns that I wrote several years ago: HUMOR No one is better at returning presents than my wife; some would say it’s a gift.

You get what you pay for. Surely, you’ve heard that adage countless times. You heed that adVISION vice from the wise. You probably even preach it to your budding teenagers. Why, then, would you take a shortcut with your surgical vision procedure?

Out of all the questions we get, this one is probably the most frustrating: “I got this coupon for LASIK at ‘XYZ chop shop,’ what do you think about them?”

Seriously? If you needed a heart valve replacement, would you shop around for the best deal, or would you ask about the surgeon’s qualifications and their medical track record? If a cardiologist was advertising coupons for bypasses as buy one, get one free, how quickly would you be running away from their clinic?

I honestly don’t know where the public perception has changed, but LASIK is an extremely delicate and technical medical procedure altering the single most important sense that we use to function in life. I may be biased, but permanent vision correc-

tion is extremely important! More time should be done researching this surgical procedure than simply listening to a radio ad offering free tech devices if you “sign up before year’s end.”

It’s your vision – for the rest of your life! You can always buy that same doodad on your own, but you can’t replace your eyes if the surgery isn’t done correctly.

Fortunately, there are some great LASIK surgeons here in Indy that we trust and recommend, but there also are some with which you should use caution when shopping around.

Simply put, if there is a high-pressure sale, a sliding price range or free devices being offered – run! When in doubt, ask your eye doctor for their medical recommendation instead of checking Facebook or gimmicky holiday sales pushes. Your eyes will thank you for it!

Seasonal brain changes in older adults — Research suggests that older adults’ brains also go through seasonal changes that make their brains act five years older, meaning five years slower, at certain times of year. Researchers at the University

of Toronto analyzed health data on more than 3,000 people, age 70 to 90, from the U.S., Canada and France. On average, the ability to think, concentrate and remember was better in the late summer and early fall than in the winter and spring. The difference in cognition between winter-spring and summer-fall was the equivalent of almost five years of brain age. The researchers dubbed this effect seasonal plasticity of cognition.

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel Symphony Orchestra Music Director Janna Hymes has no problem picking HOLIDAY her favorite holiday movie, “Holiday Inn” with Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby.

“I love that movie so much,” Hymes said. “The kids know it, and we watch it every year.

Hymes It’s so funny. The music is incredible.”

As far as favorite musicals, that’s a little harder for the Carmel resident to pin down. She regularly listens to Christmas albums by Doc Severinsen and Michael Bublé.

“I have a compilation CD with people on it like Natalie Cole, Idina Menzel and a lot of pop artists,” Hymes said. “Now with Echo, I can just say, ‘Play holiday music,’ and it plays great music. Last night, I just said, ‘Play holiday jazz.’ We just did our Holiday Pops concert, so I’m up on all that much. I love the holidays and being able to perform in the holidays. When everything kicks in and everyone is in the spirit, there is nothing like it.”

Unlike Hymes, Actors Theatre of Indiana co-founder Don Farrell can’t pick just one holiday movie.

The holiday Farrell movies he loves for different reasons are “A Christmas Story,” “Christmas Vacation,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

His favorite Christmas musical is one ATI has presented in previous years, “A Year With Frog and Toad!”

“Some of my best Christmas memories are with that musical,” he said.

Farrell said “A Christmas Story: The Musical” has become a new favorite. Farrell is appearing in Beef & Boards’ production of the musical, which runs through Dec. 31.

“My favorite dish was what I thought my mother invented, the famous green bean casserole with Durkee onions on top,” he said. “I can’t believe I thought my mom invented that dish. Can’t have a holiday meal without it.”

The Westfield resident had several traditions growing up in Georgia.

“My favorite tradition in the past as a child was driving out with my dad

and two brothers to cut down a tree in the woods picking out what we would call our Charlie Brown Christmas tree, one that most likely no one would ever think would be suitable,” Farrell said. “Then baking and decorating gingerbread cookies with my mom and hanging them on the tree for my friends to pick one when they came over to play at my house.”

Farrell said another nice memory growing up was going caroling around his neighborhood and at the Children’s Hospital with friends.

“Always a feel-good way to get in the Christmas spirit,” Farrell said.

“Today, my go-to tradition for trees is at the Carmel United Methodist Church and purchase a live Christmas tree to support their CUMC youth work.”

IMS show adds new element

Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles and HOLIDAY his staff figured Lights at the Brickyard would be a good way to draw racing fans during the offseason.

“We learned that 50 percent of the people that came through the first year had never even been to the Speedway, which is pretty crazy,” Boles said. “We figured it would be mostly race fans, but it was families looking for something to do in their cars.”

So, Boles said the lights display has become a great way to introduce IMS to people who have never been before.

The holiday lights display, in its fourth year, keeps growing. This year, Lights at the Brickyard has added an out-of-car experience around the IMS Pagoda Plaza.

rience down first before we focused on the out-of-car experience,” Boles said. “People can park their car and walk around Pagoda Plaza and go up into the Pagoda.”

Operating hours are 6 to 9 p.m.

Sunday through Thursday and 6 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The Pagoda Plaza Village and Pagoda Experience will be available through Dec. 24.

For my first venture back into the dining world, I checked out Bier Brewery North because Patrick Mullen, formerly of Patrick’s Kitchen and Drinks in Zionsville, recently partnered with Bier Brewery North to offer a food menu. If it’s your first time visiting, order the Killer Grilled Cheese. It’s a melty, delicious sandwich with Swiss, provolone, Monterey jack, mild cheddar and extra sharp white cheddar topped

with cherrywood smoked bacon. For something a little healthier, try the Crazy Veggie ($8.95), with black bean hummus, chopped olives, cucumber, tomato, carrot and shredded cheese on a baguette. Another popular item is the Verde-braised beef tacos ($11.95). It comes with three soft-shell tacos with sirloin braised overnight in a tomatillo-jalapeno sauce, topped with corn black bean salsa and a barbecue crema. For dessert, order the hummingbird cake, which has pineapple, bananas, cinnamon chips and cream cheese frosting ($4). Or try Love in a Bowl, a double-chocolate fudge brownie with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and whipped cream ($6).

Suggested pairings: Bier Brewery North was kind enough to let me sample all the beers on the menu (they were all good, and I felt great).

The Citrasense IPA was my favorite.

It’s a good option for those looking to try IPAs because it has a milder finish than most. Get a pint for $5.95, or $4.50 on Wednesday nights.

Remains of Jerusalem’s Second Temple Commentary by Don Knebel In about 34 B.C., Herod became King of Judea. To improve the image of his backwater kingdom, TRAVEL Herod undertook massive construction projects, including rebuilding Jerusalem’s Second Temple, then located atop a flatted area on Mount Moriah. Beginning in 19 B.C., Herod built and filled a massive trapezoidal-shaped retaining wall around Mount Moriah, creating a much larger platform, or Temple Mount, on which he built a much larger Second Temple complex to replace the original. The 1,000-foot-long western side of the stone retaining wall extended about 100 feet above the Tyropean Road, ancient Jerusalem’s shop-lined main street. An arched bridge, then the highest in the world, straddled the Tyropean Road, allowing visitors to enter the Temple Mount from the west.

According to the Gospel of John (2:20), the reconstructed Second Temple was completed 46 years af-

Throughout the following centuries, debris collected above the Tyropean Road, eventually reaching near where the arched bridge had connected to the western wall. In 1838, American Edward Robinson identified that connection point, and the arch became known as Robinson’s Arch. After Israel gained control of the area around the Temple Mount after the Six-Day War in 1967, archaeologists began excavating the area near Robinson’s Arch, reaching the Tyropean Road in 1987. Today’s, visitors can walk a section of the Tyropean Road and see what remains of the arched bridge and what are likely stone blocks from Herod’s Second Temple.

Heard of a phrasal verb?

Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt What’s a phrasal verb, and how can it make my life better? Those are fair questions, GRAMMAR GUY especially because it’s possible you’ve never heard of a phrasal verb.

As you just deduced (quite studiously, I may add), a phrasal verb is a phrase that uses two or three words consisting of a verb and a particle and/or a preposition to form one semantic unit. Phrasal verbs also are known as “verbal idioms,” if that helps you understand the term better.

The easiest way to understand phrasal verbs is to share some examples: turn up, back off, tune out, hook up, play along and lean in. Now that you see this list, you probably realize we use phrasal verbs all the time.

What I find fascinating about phrasal verbs is that you can start with one base verb (let’s use “blow”)

and, by adding different prepositions, you end up with completely different meanings: blow up, blow in, blow off, blow out. All those phrases have unique meanings. You take one basic verb and “jazz it up” with a punchy preposition. Verbs on their own are so basic.

My favorite thing about phrasal verbs? You can end a sentence with one, which means — at least in this case — it’s kosher to end a sentence with a preposition. So, lighten up.

Calm down. Chill out. Phrasal verbs are part of our everyday language, and they’re not falling out of fashion anytime soon. Thanks for letting me geek out.
