Centier Bank donates to United Way — On Giving Tuesday, Centier Bank presented a $50,000 donation to United Way as part of its annual contribution campaign. F.C. Tucker stats — Westfield home buyers saw a price increase as homes spent less time on the market in November 2019. According to F.C. Tucker Company, the average sale price for homes in Westfield was $355,782, an increase of 2.8 percent from November 2018. Westfield homes also spent less time on the market – an average of 47 days, or 11 fewer days than November 2018. The average price per square foot increased 7.9 percent, to $145.94.

Djour receives scholarship — Westfield High School senior Mahamat Djour was selected to receive a full four-year scholarship to the University of Notre Dame through the QuestBridge National College Match program. Students apply to the program to potentially be matched to one of 40 highly selective universities around the nation. Students can list up to 12 universities on their end, and then the colleges each choose the students they are interested in, and possible matches are made. Out of 14,926 applicants, only 1,127 students were chosen.

Plan commission OKs Meijer signs, Grand Junction economic development plan Compiled by Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com The Westfield Advisory Plan Commission met Dec. 2 and forwarded several items onto the Westfield City Council, including a detailed development plan GOVERNMENT for Grassy Branch Marketplace and an amendment to allow for more signage for the Meijer development.

What happened: The commission approved a detailed development plan for Grassy Branch Marketplace, Lot 3 What it means: Grassy Branch Partners, LLC by American Structurepoint, Inc. requested a detailed development plan approval for a 27,234-square-foot commercial building on 4.16 acres at 3302 E. Ind. 32 that is set to attract multiple retail tenants.

What happened: The commission approved a request for an amendment to the Maple Knoll planned unit development district for the new Meijer store.

What it means: Meijer and its engineer, Woolpert, Inc., have petitioned the city to allow for more signage for the development. The commission originally voted down the request, sending the petition to the Westfield City Council with an unfavorable recommendation. At a Nov. 25 city council meeting, representatives from Meijer presented significant changes to its original request, reducing signage by more than 400 square feet. The city council voted in favor of the changes, sending the request back to the APC for review.

The final vote was 7-1, with commissioner Bob Smith voting against.

What happened: The commission held a public hearing for waivers for a new housing development called Atwater.

What it means: Located north of the intersection at Casey Road and 193rd Street, Olthof Homes, LLC is requesting an overall development plan and primary plat review to establish 275 residential lots in the 100-acre site in the Atwater planned unit development district. The lots will be a mix of duplexes and single-family homes.

No residents spoke during the public hearing. The commission will vote to send a recommendation to the city council at a future meeting.

What happened: The commission voted in favor of an order for an economic development plan for Grand Junction.

What it means: The Grand Junction EDA amendment was recently adopted by the Westfield Redevelopment Commission, which wants to create a sub-allocation area for improvements related to the Union Square mixed-use project.

The APC unanimously approved the order.

What happened: The commission held a public hearing for and approved a rezone request for a new housing development called Orchard View.

What it means: Arbor Homes plans to develop 271 lots on approximately 104 acres in the Orchard View planned unit development district north of the intersection of Casey Road and Ind. 32.

The council voted 8-0 to send a positive recommendation to the city council, which will have final say.

What happened: The commission held a public hearing for a rezone request to establish the Link planned unit development district.

What it means: EdgeRock Development, LLC plans to develop approximately 68 acres at the southwest corner of 191st Street and Tomlinson Road and has petitioned to rezone a portion of the property from agricultural/single-family rural to local business.

The request involves dividing the property into five subdistricts – the hotel district (District 1), the park district (District 2), the technology center district (District 3), the observatory district (District 4) and the community entertainment center district (District 5).

Jim Steckley, who lives across from the back side of the proposed development, spoke during the public hearing to voice concerns about drainage, trash storage and what the architectural features will be at the back of the development. Another resident, Debbie Sturm, who lives on the other side of 191st Street, said she is primarily concerned about increased traffic and changing traffic patterns as well as signage.

At a future meeting, the APC will vote whether to send a favorable or unfavorable recommendation to the city council. For more on the proposal, see Page 12.

David Weekley Homes helps 900 locally — Due to a partnership between David Weekley Homes Second Helpings, a nonprofit organization that has served the greater Indianapolis area for 20 years, nearly 900 local people in need were provided meals for Thanksgiving.

Culver’s collects nonperishable items — Culver’s of Westfield is collecting nonperishable food items for Open Door of Washington Township through Dec. 31.

The restaurant’s goal is to collect enough food to feed 100 people in the community.

Connor on mission to raise awareness about scoliosis

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Following Keegan Connor’s successful appearance in the preteen division of the ACHIEVEMENT Nov. 23 - Dec. 1 National All-American Miss competition in Los Angeles, she had little time to celebrate.

The Westfield Middle School eighth-grader returned to Westfield for one day before heading to New York to have a new type of spinal surgery Dec. 4 to help correct her severe scoliosis, a curvature of the spine.

Connor, 13, went to New York to have the Vertebral Body Tethering procedure which was approved this year.

“It wasn’t FDA-approved until late August, and no one in Indiana does it.

There are probably only 15 surgeons in the world who do this procedure,” her mother Sheryl Matthys said.

The surgery uses a tether rather than two steel rods, thereby maintaining flexibility in the spine. It is a preferred option for growing kids.

“I was very happy with how the surgery came out,” Connor said. “It will definitely help me in the future as well.”

Matthys said her daughter had some back pain before the scoliosis was detected.

“We thought it was because she took dance classes,” Matthys said.

“We didn’t know it was because her spine was twisted and hurting.”

Connor is trying to raise awareness about idiopathic scoliosis, which primarily strikes girls between the ages of 10 and 14. She has a platform

At the nationals, Connor earned first runner-up for Music Artist of the Year and also placed in the top five for actress, talent, best résumé and red carpet correspondent. She was second runner-up for both music artist and spokesperson in 2018 and was top 10 in talent.

“I made a lot of improvement in actress and talent and music artist, especially the singing categories,” Connor said. “I’ve gained a lot since last year and have gained more confidence to go out on the stage and perform.”

Connor sang three pop songs for the music artist portion.

Connor, who is undergoing physical therapy, will likely be able to return to school in mid-January.

Virtual challenge loops distance of I-465

By Emma Uber news@currentinwestfield.com Vision Event Management is helping people maintain healthy New Year’s resolutions with the NEW YEAR inaugural 465 Virtual Challenge. Between Jan. 1 and Feb. 29, participants are challenged to complete 53 miles of exercise, the distance of the I-465 around central Indiana.

“Because the challenge is virtual, (you) are not doing this on I-465. You are doing this on treadmills, your favorite trail, really however you want,” said Jeff Graves, president of Westfield-based Vision Event Management.

“You can walk, run, bike, skip, crawl, whatever you want to do to get your exercise and get your 53 miles.”

Participants will record their progress and report it online. Vision Event Management plans to send frequent emails with encouragement, updates on how many miles participants should have completed and a suggested training program.

Registration is open with two different options: premium and basic.

Premium registration costs $39.99, and those who complete the challenge will receive a T-shirt, medal, bumper sticker, bib and certificate of completion. Basic registration is $24.99 and includes a bumper sticker, bib and certificate of completion upon

conquering the challenge.

There are additional programs for those who want to challenge themselves even further. A 24 Hour Club is available for those who complete the 53 miles in less than 24 hours and a Looper Club is offered to those who complete the challenge multiple times.

“We’ll be promoting those people on the website, getting their name out, getting them certificates,” said Graves, a Carmel resident. “We want to keep developing what we can do for those people because that’s pretty cool that they’re willing to take the challenge and go above and beyond.”

Graves said a virtual running event allows people to exercise during the winter months while also fostering a sense of community.

“Because of New Year’s resolutions, it’s a perfect time. I think it’s a real way to keep people motivated in these upcoming months, and it’s a good way to do something with friends from all around the country and all around the world,” Graves said. “You can all be competing and sharing an experience together but doing it wherever you are. I think it is going to bring a sense of community to people in a different way than an actual running event that’s on the street will.”

Dalton plans development near Grand Park with Laser Flash, driving school, space science center

He plans to develop Laser Flash, a driving school, a possible jump park and acreage for a world-class public observatory, digital planetarium sky Dalton theater and space science center under Link Institute.

The nearly $20 million development encompasses 68 acres the southeast quadrant of Tomlinson Road and 191st Street. A community entertainment center would include a 45,000-square-foot Laser Flash with a full restaurant and outdoor eating area, a 90,000-square-foot Jay Howard driving school and race shop, a 60,000-square-foot facility with a two-level indoor electric go-kart track for recreational use.

“We (also) have planned for an outdoor go-kart course,” said Dalton, managing director for EdgeRock Development in Westfield. “What makes that unique is that if you look at (the) north elevation of the building, two doors open up so people will start indoors, go out and come back.

“What we’re looking for here is to take advantage of the Grand Park crowd and the community.”

A hotel and public park is planned for the southwest quadrant of Tomlinson Road and 191st Street.

Dalton said no other companies have announced plans to open in the community entertainment center so far, but he anticipates including a 25,000- to 30,000-square-foot jump park.

Insatiable need

Wilson’s ‘commentary’ lacking

Commentary by Terry Anker American pop singer and sister of famed super group siblings The Jackson Five, Janet Jackson — Miss Jackson, if you’re nasty — rewrote and performed the 1986 hit song “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” casting some shade on her ex-husband, singer James DeBarge, and asserting a “strong” counter to what had been widely perceived as a sweet pop persona. At the time, she attributed the mood of the album to be one of self-defense.

Whatever the motivation, the song has become, for some, at least, an anthem for demanding one’s due: “You may have been valuable to me in the past, but you need to be valuable to me now. If not, get out.” Perhaps it is inure to the human condition. We love those who seem to love us.

OK, but how far can one take the notion? What can we reasonably expect, or even demand, from those with whom we are in relationships?

Attention? Time? Physical appearance? Age? Gifts? Acquiescence?

Priority? In business, our intentions are drawn up in contracts with end dates, exits and provisions for renegotiation. We do X and Y, they do A and B, and we decide if we still like the deal every 24 months.

But, human interactions are more complicated. They rarely come with an end point. They always change, and we routinely fail to be rational.

But is our need reasonable or is it entirely insatiable?

Waging war in tinseltown Commentary by Danielle Wilson Today’s the day, friends. The Wilson Tinsel War is about to begin. I’m watching my husband HUMOR Doo prepare our obscenely large Douglas fir for lights, ornaments and, yes, the highly controversial artificial aluminum gorgeousness that is holiday tinsel.

See, 2019 is my year to decorate our 12-foot tannenbaum in the tradition of my youth. Luckily for our marriage, most of this Doo also enjoyed growing up. Employing fire-hazard, multi-colored ceramic lights, a hodge-podge of ornaments ranging from Waterford crystal to dry macaroni, we happily agree that the end product should be a gaudy narrative of our lives. Where we differ is the literal icing on the cake, and by that phrase I mean fake icicles on a tree. I grew up with a butt-load of tinsel covering every single reachable bough; he did not. And so for the past 20 years, in order to avoid copious

amounts of therapy, we have agreed on alternating.

In 2018, I silently endured a naked conifer, sad and dark without that silvery ‘wow’ factor. This December, it’s Doo’s turn to suck it up. The problem is, he’s not quite as accepting of a Danielle Christmas as I am of a Doo one. And, he’s indoctrinated our sons into his stupid way of thinking. Luckily, I have the girls on my side, and the aforementioned boy children are still away at college. Hopefully, this means the Tinsel War will be less Antietam and more Treaty of Paris.

Time will tell. I am waiting until the last possible moment to remind him, with photographic evidence, if necessary, that this is a tinsel year. Let the war begin!

This story began several years ago when the UPS truck pulled up to the curb at our house HUMOR and we wondered what Brown was going to do for us. We saw the driver struggle with a huge carton the size of a bigscreen TV. He maneuvered it to the front porch and left it leaning against the door. I went outside to look at it.

“Who’s it for?” Mary Ellen asked.

I checked the label and it was addressed to me, but those stickers can be misleading. Some of our credit cards are in my name, some are in Mary Ellen’s, so when a delivery is made, we are not sure who ordered it and who the gift is ultimately for. If the wrong person opens it, well, there goes the surprise meant for Christmas morning.

“It says it’s for me,” I told her, “but I have absolutely no recollection of ordering anything so big. Maybe you

ordered it, Mary Ellen.”

My wife thought for a moment, and so began the weirdest conversation in our 40-year marriage.

“Dick, I know what it is. It’s that special item I mentioned two months ago that I wanted for Christmas. You said you found it in a catalog. Don’t you remember? I am so excited! Thank you.”

“I have absolutely no idea what it is. Can you give me a hint?”

“No, I can’t give you a hint. That would ruin the surprise.”

“Ruin the surprise? The gift is for you! It’s supposed to be your surprise.

But you already know what it is. I’m the one who doesn’t have a clue.”

“It doesn’t seem right to tell you.

That’s not in keeping with the spirit of giving, Dick.”

It was driving me crazy that I had no memory of what I bought her.

“Is it a high-tech item?” I asked.

“Not really,” she said.

“Do you plug it in?”

“No.” “Is it artwork?”

“No, not even close. But I don’t want to play anymore. If you guess it, I’ll have nothing to look forward to on Christmas morning. I want to see the expression on your face when I open it.”

Later that morning, when Mary Ellen went out grocery shopping, I opened the box. It was a really neat present. I’ve never been happier with something I bought my wife. Before Mary Ellen got home, I resealed it, then gift-wrapped it and placed it under the tree. Of course, now we both know what is in the package. It will still be a surprise on Christmas morning -- as long as we can both keep a secret.

Police department receives 45 AEDS

DISPATCH Seasonal brain changes in older adults — We’re used to seasonal weather changes, but research suggests that older adults’ brains also go through seasonal changes that make their brains act five years older, meaning five years slower, at certain times of year.

Researchers at the University of Toronto analyzed health data on more than 3,000 people, age 70 to 90, from the U.S., Canada and France. Most were cognitively healthy, but some had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

On average, the ability to think, concentrate and remember was better in the late summer and early fall than in the winter and spring. The difference in cognition between winter-spring and summer-fall was the equivalent of almost five years of brain age. The researchers dubbed this effect seasonal plasticity of cognition.

Bolt for the Heart, in its eighth year, is an annual 5K race on Thanksgiving Day. The donation allows for each WPD patrol car to be equipped with an AED. Prior to the donation, only one or two patrol cars per shift had an AED. “Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of preventable deaths, and there’s almost 1,000 people killed daily in the U.S.,” WPD Chief Joel Rush said.

“The survival rate is 11 percent. That’s one of the things we are trying to fix with what we’re doing today.”

Rush called the donation a “game-changer.”

HSE grad, ex-Straight No Chaser member releases Christmas album

By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com For Ryan Ahlwardt, performing comes naturally. Since elementary school, he has taken to MUSIC the stage, but it was during his time as a student at Hamilton Southeastern High School that he became immersed in choir.

With an impressive résumé and a background of performing worldwide with a cappella group Straight No Chaser, Ahlwardt has recorded a new Christmas album, “Indiana Ryan Ahlwardt Christmas.”

Released last month, “Indiana Christmas” is filled with Ahlwardt’s versions and rearrangements of famous Christmas songs. The title track is an original written by Dan Ponce, founder of Straight No Chaser. Ponce wrote the song in 2008 for the group’s first Christmas album.

“I got Dan’s blessing to record the song for my first solo Christmas album and named the entire project after the song,” Ahlwardt said. “Having called Indiana home for 27 years, I knew ‘Indiana Christmas’ was the perfect name for the album. I wanted the album to sound like how Indiana has always felt to me – home.”

The album has 13 songs. Ahlwardt said his favorites, aside from “Indiana Christmas,” are “Hallelujah/O Holy Night” and a modernized version of “Auld Lang Syne,” which he co-wrote with Noblesville-based producer Matt Mellinger.

friends. He earned a spot in the group that would gain worldwide attention in December 2007 when a member of the group uploaded a video of their performance of “The 12 Days of Christmas” to an up-andcoming website, YouTube. The video became the most shared video of 2007 and caught the attention of Craig Kallman, CEO of Atlantic Records, who quickly signed the group to the label.

“Our first album on Atlantic Records hit No. 1 on iTunes and has sold over 3 million copies to date,” Ahlwardt said. “As part of the professional group from 2008 to 2012, I was able to record an additional five albums, appear on two national PBS specials and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, perform on such iconic stages as the Royal Albert Hall in London, Hollywood Bowl in LA, and the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, and collaborate with such artists as Sara Bareilles, Barry Manilow, Take 6, Phil Collins and Stevie Wonder, to name a few.”

Ahlwardt left the group in 2012 to return to Fishers and lead the local chapter of Young Life, an outreach ministry for teenagers. He served in that position until 2018. Since then, he has worked as a full-time artist and vocalist, expanding his horizons to voice acting, working on projects for the Indianapolis Zoo, the state of Indiana and Eli Lilly. His voice also may be familiar to listeners of “Radio Theology,” a weekly show he co-hosts Sunday mornings on 99.5 WZPL. “Being a creative entrepreneur and small business owner in Fishers gives me the opportunity to provide for my family in one of the safest and most vibrant communities in America,” Ahlwardt said. “My personal and creative roots are here in Indiana, and I’m eager to see what the future holds for our family and the city and state we love to call home.”

MEET RYAN AHLWARDT Ahlwardt lives in Fishers with his wife, Lauren, and their two children, Olivia, 5, and Gus, 2.

Olivia is featured on “Indiana Christmas” on the song “Go Tell It on the Mountain.” Lauren sings a duet on “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” The two met while singing a cappella at IU. They regularly perform at weddings, parties and corporate events with their seven-piece ’90s cover band, Mixtape.

Marrakesh’s exotically colorful garden Commentary by Don Knebel The Jardin Majorelle (Majorelle Garden) in Marrakesh, Morocco is a wonderland of exotic colors, TRAVEL sounds and smells like few other places in the world. Now one of the most visited sites in Morocco, it was once nearly destroyed.

In about 1920, Jacques Majorelle, a French painter, arrived in Marrakesh, long known as the “Red City” because of its red sandstone buildings and walls. In 1923, Majorelle bought a 4-acre plot of land in Marrakesh and began building a garden. Until his death in Paris in 1962, Majorelle brought to his garden 135 plant species from five continents. He painted Moroccan scenes in a studio on the ground floor of a Cubist villa he built in the garden in the 1930s. Majorelle painted the villa and other structures of his garden in bright primary colors, the most common a vibrant shade of blue known as Bleu Majorettle that reminded him of the nearby Atlas Mountains.

Through a combination of bad luck,

including a divorce and a serious automobile accident and exuberant spending, Majorelle was forced to sell his garden in 1961. When French designer Yves Saint-Laurent and his partner discovered Majorelle’s garden on a visit to Marrakesh in 1966, they immediately became fans, even though it was deteriorating.They added irrigation to the site and brought in another 165 plant species. When Saint-Laurent died in 2008, his ashes were scattered in the garden. Now operated by a charitable foundation, the Jardin Majorelle, with its dreamlike character, includes a museum dedicated to the Berbers, who established Marrakesh in 1062 and made it the capital of an empire that once stretched 1,900 miles from northwestern Africa to southern Spain. Let’s face it — the trajectory of our language is trending slangular (a word I’m GRAMMAR GUY confident I just invented).

With the proliferation and pervasiveness of internet culture, slang is everywhere. You know this is true when your grandma comments that your new shoes are “on fleek.” What is slang, and how should we properly utilize it in our communication?

It’s time to load up our slangshots to attempt to define slang.

Slang is informal language spoken by a specific group of people. These words and phrases incubate among particular groups, whether they be teenagers, minority groups or certain geographical regions. Slang starts conversationally, whether or not it ever translates into written language. Using slang is a way for individuals to communicate with their own set of words that help them to identify as part of a group.

Slang isn’t jargon. Jargon is language that applies to a particular professional group. For instance, you’ll hear tons of medical jargon in a TV hospital drama: “The patient has a localized, sub-therapeutic, idiopathic, epidermal pathogen that needs to be stabilized, stat!” To be honest, I have no idea what any of that means; however, since these seemingly foreign terms are specific to the medical community, they count as jargon, not slang.

Let’s walk through an incom-

plete recent history of slang with examples. In the ’20s, if you called your sandwich the “bee’s knees” or “cat’s pajamas,” you’d be saying that it was a particularly good sandwich. If you’re still telling people to “talk to the hand,” the 1990s called from their gigantic cellphone; they want their slang term for a scornful rejection of what someone has said back.

Use slang in informal situations: In conversations, at parties, online and when communicating with people with whom you already have a well-developed rapport. Don’t use slang on your resume, in a job interview, in a Nobel prize acceptance speech, or in any kind of formal writing — which includes business emails.

Although I’m a fan of slang, you need to exercise caution when using it, especially in writing. A misplaced use of “off the chain” in the wrong context will not only lose you style points, but it could also hurt your chances of getting ahead at work.
