The next APC meeting will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 at City Hall, 130 Penn St. What happened: The commission approved a development plan for a veterinary clinic.

What it means: Westfield Veterinary Center will open a 12,000-square-foot veterinary clinic on a 1-acre lot at 18160 Wheeler Rd. What happened: The commission approved a development plan for Options Charter School.

What it means: Fritz Engineering Services will build a 15,990-square-foot school on 3 acres at 3500 E. Ind. 32.

What happened: The commission voted in favor of an amendment request for the Dartown Crossing planned unit development district.

In addition, the development will have two recreational lakes, an amphitheater and other amenities. The commission sent a unanimous favorable recommendation to the Westfield City Council, which has final say on the amendment request.

What happened: A public hearing was held for a proposed development plan and primary plat review for Chatham Hills Section 7.

What it means: Chatham Hills, LLP is planning to develop 172.687 acres east of the intersection of Chatham Ridge Boulevard and Promontory Lane, west of U.S. 31., to expand Chatham Hills.

Holiday craft show returns

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com One of the Westfield Band Boosters’ largest fundraisers will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. BAND BOOSTERS 23 at Westfield High School, 18250 N. Union St. “The (Westfield Band Boosters’ Holiday Craft Show) is one of the main fundraisers for the Booster organization, which is a nonprofit that supports all the band programs at the high school,” coordinator Maura Clark said. “The money that we raise goes to funding anything from paying for buses to take the students to competitions to paying for extra class instructors.”

The craft show will feature 147 vendors. All crafts are handmade or hand-embellished. Clark said crafts range from jewelry to woodwork.

Admission is $3 for adults. Children 11 and younger are admitted free.

“The No. 1 thing vendors say is how awesome the students are helping move them in in the morning to being available to assist throughout the day and helping move all the stuff out when the show closes,” Clark said.

Other features include a Santa appearance, concessions and a coat check.

Abbott Labs amendment approved by APC, council

By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com At the end of October, Westfield city officials announced a project that could bring hunDEVELOPMENT dreds of jobs to the NorthPoint Industrial Park.

An amendment request that would change zoning for approximately 20 acres in the park to allow for the development is the final hurdle for Abbott Labs, a heart valve device manufacturer.

The parcel is at the southeast corner of Ind. 31 and 202nd Street, just north of the Bastian Solutions development. The facility would be two stories and 90,000 square feet and operational by 2021.

to give a favorable recommendation for the rezone to the Westfield City Council, approved the request at its Nov. 11 meeting.

The rezone comes after council approved a set of 10-year tax abatements to help build the facility at its most recent meeting. Another $4.5 million is being given to the company by way of tax credits and training which grants because of its plans to create nearly 500 jobs in five years.

For the fourth consecutive year, Noblesville resident George Kristo has vowed to match donations given to Janus Developmental Services during its Giving Tuesday campaign.

Janus, a Noblesville-based nonprofit, Kristo provides resources for those with developmental disabilities and their families. For the past several years, it has participated in Giving Tuesday, a worldwide initiative that takes place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and encourages people

to donate to a cause.

“George Kristo is a kind, humble man with a big heart for serving others. He loves our clients and enjoys supporting the programs that enable them to succeed,” said Debbie Laird, senior vice president of development at Janus.”

Laird said Giving Tuesday donations help to fund a variety of services and programs, one of which involves Community Integration Experiences for Janus clients.

Last year, with Kristo’s match, Janus collected $43,955 on Laird Giving Tuesday. Laird said this year’s goal is $25,000 in donations for a total of $50,000 after Kristo’s match.

DWA holds winter market

The market is held on the first and third Saturday each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Westfield Lions Club, 120 Jersey St. It runs through March 2020.

“We have found that our market shoppers enjoy being able to get some of the same fresh and local products through the winter,” DWA Administrative Coordinator Colleene Quinn said.

The market features a variety of vendors selling seasonal produce.

Vendors include Moonlit Farms, Green Beard Growers, Cookies & Bytes, Homemade Sourdough Lovers and Dark Side Roasters. Products include seasonal produce, baked goods, coffee, tea, salsa and more. Green Beard

Humane Society for Hamilton County Executive Director Rebecca Stevens said the 13th FUNDRAISER annual Tinsel and Tails fundraiser at Ritz Charles usually sells out. Last year, Stevens said approximately 700 guests attended. This year, the event is scheduled for 6 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at Ritz Charles, 12156 N. Meridian St., Carmel.

Guests can enjoy a silent and live auction, dinner and a video montage featuring animal success stories of the year.

“It features about seven to 10 of the year’s most remarkable stories of rescue and redemption, and these are stories of survivor pets. They survived something unthinkable,” Stevens said.

“We tell the stories about rescue, not just because an animal was rescued, but because of how some of these animals rescued people.”

APC rejects Meijer request

At the Nov. 6 STATE ROAD 32 Westfield Advisory Plan Commission meeting, developer Woolpert Inc.’s request to allow the store to have a larger sign was unanimously voted down.

Woolpert is proposing waivers for two monument signs – one on Spring Mill Road and one on Ind. 32 — in addition to a sign on the west side wall of the building facing Spring Mill Road, the primary sign on the northern/ front wall and a sign on the back of the fueling station, which faces Ind. 32. Overall, the entire development would have 17 signs totaling 1,557 square feet of signage.

Seniors talk college app pressure, coping skills Commentay by Sophie Gorecki news@currentinwestfield.com College application season is looming over the class of 2020, and with applications, STUDENT VIEW essays and standardized testing, it can get a little overwhelming. There are so many college choices, and it is up to seniors not only to make those decisions, but also to get accepted into the school.

Along with applying and choosing a college come the typical stresses of being a student: essays, assignments and studying. It proves to be difficult to find a balance between homework and college application deadlines that are farther away.

“The hardest part is being motivated, because you know you have to do it and you know there’s these deadlines that are so far away, so you just don’t want to do it,” senior Elizabeth Cooper said. “You have to start early or else you’ll have no time to do applications.”

According to a survey of the class of 2020, WHS seniors apply to an average of 4.47 colleges each.

“If you do everything at once, there will be too much pressure,” senior Jeffrey Fox said.

Time management is key to being a successful student, and some seniors find that the best way to maintain a balance between school work and college apps is to start early and break up the work over a longer peri-

od of time.

“Take it one day at a time,” senior Maggie Senter said. “Don’t try to do everything at once because that gets really overwhelming. If you’re filling out the Common App or writing essays, do a little bit every day.”

There are many factors to consider when applying to college: location, price, prestige and class size. Weighing all of the pros and cons to find the perfect college piles on even more pressure for many seniors.

“I think finding a college is the hardest because there are so many options and choices,” Senter said. “It can be hard to find the best fit for you when you don’t really know what you want yet.”

Deciding on a college is overwhelming for most, but WHS guidance counselors like Christy Ulsas are available to steer students in the right direction.

“There is a lot to consider when looking at colleges and what colleges are going to be a good fit for you,” Ulsas said. “I highly suggest that students get on college campuses to get an idea of what is going to be a good fit for them. Take a deep breath, relax – it will all work out. There is a college out there for everyone, and you’re going to get in somewhere and you’re going to be just fine.”

PREVENT A DRAIN CLOG

Clogged drains might be one of the most inconvenient nuisances of homeownership, but did you know that drains are designed to be clog free?

Most drains clog because we try to put something in them that doesn’t belong.

Here are a few tips on how to prevent your homes drains from clogging up: 1. Don’t put anything in your toilet except for toilet paper – and yes, that does include wipes, even if they say they are flushable.

2. Even though toilet paper is flushable, don’t use too much toilet paper, or it will not be able to pass through the pipes cleanly.

3. If you have an older toilet or drainage system, keep in mind it may take extra water to move items through the line – that might require extra flushes.

6. Do not put peels down the drain, even if you have a garbage disposal installed.

7. Do not use chemical drain cleaners in your drains if a clog does occur. The chemicals can eat your home’s pipes, possibly leading to bigger issues later; they are not good for the environment; and over exposure to these chemicals can have adverse effects on your health.

If you have an older home, it is possible that your drain and sewer lines are made of material that has degraded over time. If you have continued drain problems, it is important to contact a professional to have your drain system inspected. Collapsed lines, tree roots, or improper fall are all causes of drain issues that may require intervention for permanent drainage solutions.

At its Nov. 6 meeting, the Westfield Advisory Plan Commission voted 5-2 in favor of a rezone request for the Pulte Homes development that could bring 490 age-restricted, single-family homes to 151st Street, west of Towne Road. If approved, the zoning would change from agricultural/single-family rural to single-family high density.

After last month’s public hearing on the request, Jon Dobosiewicz, an attorney with Nelson & Frankenberger representing Pulte and Del Webb, presented a new property layout after residents complained of not being able to clearly define sight lines in the original concept plan. The layout and concept plan now shows the areas of the proposed lots, tree preservation areas, a gazebo, retention ponds, a dog park, a large amenity center and an expanded 200-foot-wide buffer and common area along the entire west side of the property.

Commissioners Ginny Kelleher and Dave Schmitz voted against the request, citing concerns primarily focused on architectural features and a lack of “four-sided architecture.”

Building a Brighter Future Humane Society for Hamilton County asks public for help reaching donation goal

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Humane Society for Hamilton County Executive Director Rebecca Stevens can’t count the COVER STORY number of times she’s been at an HSHC fundraising event and a Carmel or Westfield resident has approached her and asked if she worked at “the Humane Society on Michigan Road (in Indianapolis).”

“Having been in Noblesville since 1984 when we were Stevens founded, I’ve found that many people who live in Carmel or on the west side of Westfield are often unaware that we exist or that we serve the entire Hamilton County community,” Stevens said. “We are the only Humane Society that serves our county’s residents, such as taking in lost pets and ensuring they get lifesaving care if they’re injured until they can be reunited with their family.

Reinforcing that, it includes the entire county. It’s all of Hamilton County. We are the ones serving you.”

The Humane Society for Hamilton County is targeting a March groundbreaking for its new facility, the culmination of a yearlong $14 millionfundraising campaign called Building a Brighter Future. HSHC recently concluded a capital campaign targeting private donors to net 80 percent of costs for the new building, and now it’s asking the public to help produce the remaining 20 percent.

Stevens, a Fishers resident, said the goal is for the Humane Society to move into the new facility at 106th Street and Hague Road in Fishers by the first quarter of 2021. HSHC is currently at 1721 Pleasant St., Noblesville.

Some of the programs HSHC offers — and will be able to expand — with the new facility include connecting pets with veterans, community outreach in local schools and more. In addition to the expanded programs, the new facility also will include 40,000 square feet of space.

The current facility has only 8,000 square feet. The increased space will allow for a medical room, a separate intake area for cats, educational outreach programs and more.

“We don’t currently have an endowment, so we are trying to raise money to build this and have that money in place for our future,” Stevens said.

“Your message is important to me … however … ” We all get them, these polite rebuffs. Our friend, business associate, or support desk operator is not available when we reach out. Understandable. Nature calls, travel happens and sometimes we just need a break. But the art of rejection is not as simple as some would believe it to be. And in the current torrent of communication mechanisms and chirping apps, we have greater reason to hide out than ever.

Studies report that humans are reaching an interchange apex. We send and receive scores of emails, texts, calls and posts each day.

Please pardon the reference, but it is now common to be listening to someone taking a phone call in the bathroom stall next door. Why? Is it really that imperative?

Could it be that we don’t know how to graciously take a breather?

Or, is it that those who demand our attention won’t tolerate even one?

So, we blithely post that “out-ofthe-office” form letter promising false love to whoever may reach out. Could we more honestly say, “You may be important to me. If so, I’m sad to miss you and will reach out promptly – but you may not be and you’ll soon know.”

It would be great to talk about it more, but it’s time for a break, and as the great Joe Walsh sings, “Just leave a message, maybe I’ll call.”

Running away from PF Commentary by Danielle Wilson I’ve finally accepted the fact that I have feet problems. There, I said it. My name is Danielle, and I HUMOR have planter fasciitis.

PF is an inflammation of the tissue that connects your toes to your heel and manifests in pain and soreness on the bottom of your foot. I’ve been a runner most of my life but have been relatively lucky in that I’ve avoided PF. Me being me, I usually attributed “other peoples,’” PF to “their own fault,” insinuating that I, of course, was better than them.

Not to their faces, mind you. I may be judgey, but I keep that shtick to myself.

Anyhoo, about a year ago I bought a weighted blanket and started training for Spartan obstacle course races, both of which put added strain on my feet. Yes, I am attributing part of my PF to my glorious 20-pound duvet that forces my feet into a pointed position for eight to 10 hours each

night. Combine that with lots of running and jumping on hard surfaces in less-than-supportive shoes and little to no stretching, and voila, PF! At least, that’s my “I’m-a-mom-so-I’mbasically-a-doctor” diagnosis.

But I haven’t done one thing to help my feet get better, even though I know exactly what to do. I still don’t stretch, I don’t wear a splint when I sleep, I don’t ice and I haven’t bought better shoes. I’ve basically been living in denial and limp-inducing pain for months.

A physical therapist called me out over the weekend, though, forcing me to admit that I have a problem. My name is Danielle, and I have PF. The road to recovery begins today!

A response to Catanese Editor, The Second Amendment reads: “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Vince Catanese’s letter entitled “Educating on the Second Amendment” is anything but educating. He should follow his own advice and read some history such as the searchable database at law.duke.edu/gunlaws.

Here are some facts: The NRA was founded to promote marksmanship, according to the NRA website and the writings of George Wingate (co-founder). None of the original writings mention arming freed slaves. Nowhere in the Federalist are mentions of individ-

ual’s right to bear arms outside the framework of well-regulated militias and the readiness of the population to withstand federal tyranny (Federalist 29 and 46). In this modern age, if you think you can beat back the U.S. Armed Forces, then you are delusional.

Until recently, no Supreme Court ruling has centered on gun rights outside the context of militias. It wasn’t until 2008 (DC v. Heller – a 5-4 ruling) that Judge Antonin Scalia stated that the prefatory clause has no meaning and the notion that the Second Amendment extends to individuals unconnected to militias. However, the ruling warns that the rights are not unlimited.

Burst of energy Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I obsess about how my lawn compares to others on my block. I noticed some bare spots HUMOR this past summer, so I addressed the issue on a trip to a local nursery. Then at the Labor Day get-together, people were discussing Joe’s yard, which was suffering from the same problem. I thought, “There, but for the grace of sod, go I (that was a long way to travel for a joke, I know).”

Now, I have a new challenge to obsess over. It began with a letter from my electric company. The envelope looked like it contained my monthly utility bill, but the contents were far more ominous. The page was titled, “Last Three Months – Neighbor Comparison.”

I scanned the enclosed printout only to learn that I was consuming more energy than those identified by the electric company as, “Your Most Efficient Neighbors.” I felt so exposed that I closed the curtains and turned off the eleven lights, three TVs and two computers I had left on the night before.

The electric company claims I used 40 percent more electricity than my most efficient neighbor. Who was this person? Which house did he live in? It didn’t say. Was he hiding in the shadows? I’ll never know, because there are no shadows when there are never any lights on.

I asked my neighbor Ted if he received a similar letter. Ted is a nice

guy, but he always leaves his garage door open, which is an eyesore. I thought he was just forgetful, but apparently this is part of his grand plan to be recognized as a “conservation superstar.”

“Every kilowatt counts,” Ted told me while we were standing in his driveway. “If I never close that overhead door, I can save $1.49 a year.” He asked what I was doing to conserve resources at home. I was tired of the discussion, so I told him I only shower once a month. Ted walked back into the garage…and down came the door.

The idea that someone is monitoring what goes on in and around my home is creepy. Whenever I look outside, strange people are reading my meters, putting colored lines on my neighbors’ lawns, installing invisible fences and looking through tiny telescopes mounted on yellow tripods.

Despite this, I really am going to try to do my part in this conservation initiative. I’m going to charge my iPad in the car, disconnect my clock radio when I’m not home and make toast only when absolutely necessary. The competition is rigorous to be No. 1 in the neighborhood, but I’m not worried. I don’t plan on expending much energy.

Sanders Glen paves way for future expansion

Although new developments aren’t planned, Sanders Glen Assisted Living and its parent compaGROWTH ny, American Eagle Life Care, are preparing for future expansion.

At its Nov. 6 meeting, the Westfield Advisory Plan Commission held a public hearing and voted in favor of an overall development plan and plat review for 10.29 acres at 334 Cherry St. The property is divided into two lots. In January 2003, the town issued a demolition permit to remove a single-family home on Lot 1. Lot 2 has been used for Sanders Glen since 1989 with an addition to the original building in 1997.

The primary plat review approved by the plan commission is the first step for a new development, meaning an overall property is reviewed to be sure it complies with city regulations related to streets, zoning and storm and sanitary sewer systems.

plan commission and Matt Skelton of Church, Church, Hittle and Antrim, representing American Eagle Life Care, said there were no plans to develop Lot 1.

A public hearing was held to get resident feedback. Only one resident, Ken Tucker, spoke with concerns about what the approval might mean for the commercial space. Skelton said the plans for Sanders Glen are tentative, but in the future, the company plans to have “a senior, independent-type of living facility,” which could potentially be smaller senior residences.

“Right now, all we are doing is positioning this property,” Skelton said.

“There’s a lot of clean up to do.”

Young actors take on key roles in ‘A Christmas Story’ at Beef & Boards

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com It’s hard to miss “A Christmas Story,” a 1983 movie which has been on a 24-hour marathon THEATER loop on TBS starting each Christmas Eve since 1997.

However, the musical, which made its Broadway debut in 2012, is not quite as well known.

“The movie is a holiday favorite, for sure. I haven’t seen the musical, but I’ve watched about every YouTube clip there is out there,” Ben Kistner said. “I especially like the Tony Awards performance.”

Kistner, a Zionsville West Middle School seventh-grader, plays the lead character of Ralphie in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s production of “A Christmas Story,” Nov. 21 to Dec. 31. Ralphie is a 9-year-old who is trying to convince his parents to buy him a BB gun for Christmas, “It was the role I was definitely most hoping for, but would’ve just been happy to be in the show,” he said. “I like that he’s just a normal kid that I can relate to.”

Kistner said one challenge is he often has to express his feelings without words.

“The narrator describes a lot of what I’m doing rather than me saying what I’m doing,” he said.

Kistner performed as Michael Banks in “Mary Poppins” at Civic Theatre in 2018 “Ralphie is just as big a part but has a lot more singing than speaking,” he said. “That’s a challenge I’m really looking forward to.”

said. “I love the scene where I put the big winter coat on. We do a pyramid and I sing with my arms out because I still have my coat on.”

Brokamp, 8, appeared in Christian Youth Theater’s “Lion King Jr.” and Jr. Civic Theatre’s “Shrek The Musical Jr.” in 2019.

“I like that I get to have my tongue stuck to a flagpole while I sing,” Clark said. “There is a lot of dancing and choreography, so there is more memorization involved.

I’m in a lot of the dance numbers, which means I have to push myself harder.”

Clark, who made his Beef & Boards debut as Flounder in “The Little Mermaid” earlier this year. said he was familiar with the musical version because he auditioned for the national tour of “A Christmas Story” in New York last year.

For Zionsville West seventh-grader Austin Lizama, his role of a bully isn’t typecasting. Lizama will play Scut Farkus.

“My friends and family think I’m

nice, so they were surprised when they found out I’m playing a bully,” Lizama said. “However, other actors have told me it’s really fun to play a mean character. Plus, this will be my first professional musical I’ve been in with Beef & Boards Dinner Theater, so having the ability to work with very talented children and adult actors is sure to be a fun ride.”

Lizama has never played an antagonistic role before. The same is true for Dylan Acquaviva, a fourth-grader at Union Elementary in Zionsville, who plays Farkus’ sidekick, Grover Dill.

“One of the fun things about acting is getting to play parts that are very different from my own personality,” Acquaviva said. “One challenge is getting into my role of being mean. It’s so different than my normal self that it’s hard not to laugh sometimes.”

A brief history of Rome’s Circus Maximus Commentary by Don Knebel Rome’s Colosseum is famous as the place where gladiators often fought to their deaths. It was proceeded by the much larger Circus TRAVEL Maximus a few thousand feet to the southwest.

Perhaps as early as the sixth century B.C., Roman authorities created a track for chariot races in the flood-prone Murcia Valley between Rome’s Aventine and Palatine Hills. The oblong track was about 2,000 feet long and 400 feet wide. Twelve staggered starting gates at one end allowed the simultaneous release of 12 chariot teams onto the sand-covered track. As time went by, wild beast hunts, gladiator fights and public executions drew more and more spectators to the Circus Maximus, or Greatest Circus, some of whom watched from wooden seats along sections of the perimeter. Roman senators watched from stone seats along one turn. Early in the first century B.C., Emperor Pompey staged a wildly popular fight between captured gladiators and 20 elephants. In about 50 B.C., to accommodate the growing crowds, Julius Caesar added seats to accommodate an estimated 150,000 people. The seats were damaged by the great fire of Rome in 64 A.D., leading Emperor Trajan to rebuild the area sur-

rounding the track in stone in about 100 A.D. Competition from the Colosseum and the Stadium of Domitian, both built in the first century A.D., led to the abandonment of Circus Maximus, which held its last chariot race in 549 A.D. The entire site was eventually buried under accumulating sand and debris and partially excavated beginning in the 16th century. Today, the site of Circus Maximus, much of it still buried, is a public park, used for concerts and other public events and again drawing huge

crowds. During the Rolling Stones’ 2014 world tour, they played before more than 70,000 fans at the place where Romans once cheered as gladiators died.

Get in the next-to-last word Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt If a potato can become vodka, then you can become a bonafide word nerd. The tools GRAMMAR GUY and tips I give you are meant to be used for good; please don’t gloat your grammar greatness over anyone; rather, use it to lift everyone up. I’m about to share a word with you that will make everyone at the white tie-optional gala assume you’re the king or queen of some distant, exotic land.

I’m talking about the word “penultimate.” Although this sounds like a million-dollar word, it simply means “next-to-last” or “second-to-last.” It’s as simple as that. So, if you ate the “penultimate Oreo,” that would mean you ate the next-to-last Oreo in the package. If you are reading the 19th chapter in a 20-chapter book, you are reading the book’s penultimate chapter.

Allow me to put on my horn-rimmed grammar nerd glasses for a second.

The term “penult” is a noun that means the next-to-last syllable in a word. The penult in the word “automobile” is “mo.” Now you know that!

Certainly, I’m not going to up the ante and share an even nerdier-yet-related word, am I? Yes, I am: antepenultimate. Antepenultimate refers to the third to last item in a series, or the next-tonext-to-last thing. Going back to our 20-chapter book: If Chapter 19 is the penultimate chapter, that means Chapter 18 is the antepenultimate chapter. If we break down the Latin meanings for each part of the word, we’d get “before” (ante) “almost” (pen) and “last” (ultimate). Antepenultimate is the thing that comes before the almost last thing.
