Some Hamilton County officials say cost-cutting measures may put police officers at risk

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Hamilton County residents will soon pay higher taxes to fund the 911 dispatch center, but PUBLIC SAFETY some Carmel officials say the existing fee structure has led to other police departments putting their officers at risk.

City and town councils Jordan representing more than half of the county’s population recently approved raising the local income tax from 1 to 1.1 percent to fund the dispatch center. The Carmel City Council was set to discuss the tax increase at its Oct. 7 meeting, although its vote will not change the outcome. The tax increase will go into effect Jan. 1, 2020.

Currently, the county uses a formula that bases each city’s fee to use the 911 dispatch center on the number of police and fire calls it receives. The more calls generated, the more a city pays as a percentage of the whole.

Some officials in Carmel say that system has led to other police departments instructing their officers to not alert dispatchers – a process known as marking out – when conducting certain proactive police activities, such as security checks and foot patrols. By not marking out on certain calls, a municipality lowers its call volume and thus its portion of the fee to use the 911 dispatch center. But it also means that dispatchers might not immediately know an officer’s status or location should something unexpected happen.

‘Nothing out of the ordinary’

According to information provided by Hamilton County, several municipalities have seen call volumes significantly drop in recent years.

The largest decrease occurred in Westfield.

Data provided by Hamilton County show that Westfield police and fire calls peaked at 62,385 in 2016 but dropped to 45,290 in 2017 and 31,885 in 2018. This occurred as the city’s population grew by more than 10 percent.

Jordan said WPD changed its policy regarding marking out in 2017 after it recorded the second-highest call volume in the county in 2016. At the time, Westfield had 11.9 percent of the county’s population but 20.2 percent of police calls to the dispatch center.

Jordan said WPD’s proactive, community-centered policy of reporting nearly every police action ended up making Westfield’s fee disproportionately high, so Weger in mid-2017 officers were instructed not to mark out on “customer service-related” calls, such as vacation checks and foot patrols. Westfield’s portion of its dispatch center bill for police calls dropped by more than $285,000 in two years, a total Jordan attributes in large part – but not completely – to the internal change in policy.

“That was too much money to ask our residents to pay to track non-police calls,” said Jordan, adding that a change in software used to track calls also contributed to the decrease.

He doesn’t know if WPD will revert to its previous policy when the tax goes into effect.

Westfield’s percentage of police calls – and its associated fee – dropped from 20.2 percent in 2016 to 15.5 percent in 2017 and 11.6 percent in 2018, even as its population grew.

At the same time, Carmel’s percentage of calls increased as its call volume remained flat, rising from 28.6 percent of the total in 2016 to 31.3 percent in 2017 and 33.7 percent in 2018.

Westfield officers still provide vacation checks and other proactive services, but the city no longer tracks them. According to data from Hamilton County, Westfield conducted 4,066 security checks in 2017 but only 74 in 2018. Its number of directed patrols, or officers sent to certain areas to prevent or reduce crime or other incidents, fell from 5,421 in 2017 to 112 the following year.

Other factors at work

In Noblesville, calls also peaked in 2016 at 53,217 but dropped to 45,747 the following year and 40,542 last year.

Although the City of Fishers dispatch cen-

ter calls have risen slowly each year since 2016, its percentage of calls has remained much lower than its percentage of the population. In 2016, for example, Fishers had 28.4 percent of the county’s population but only 18.2 percent of its police calls. Last year, it had 28 percent of the population and 23 percent of the police calls.

Fishers Police Dept. Sgt. Tom Weger said the discrepancy is likely based on several factors, such as the fact that Fishers has fewer officers than Carmel. He also said that differences in internal policies could play a role.

FPD, for example, does not have a specific policy that outlines when officers must mark out with dispatch. Weger said officers are given “some discretion” on marking out but that they are encouraged to do so on all calls for service, including security checks.

“It’s an officer-safety issue,” Weger said.

“Anytime you mark out or you get out on a detail, there’s a potential for you to have some kind of confrontation. If you’re doing a vacation check to make sure there has not been a burglary, that means there is some potential there could be a burglary.”

In Carmel, the number of calls has remained steady the past three years at approximately 91,000 calls annually.

DISPATCH Fire safety events — October is fire prevention month, and Lowe’s and First Alert have teamed up to offer fire safety events across the nation for families. In Hamilton County, events will be held at the Noblesville store, 16800 Mercantile Blvd., and Carmel store, 14598 Lowes Way, from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 12. Store associates and fire officials will host activities to teach families about equipping their homes with smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, as well as planning and practicing a fire escape plan. Children will have the opportunity to build a wooden fire truck in a workshop and will receive firefighter hats, coloring books and educational materials.

New salaries proposed for non-elected city staff

Westfield Chief of Staff MONEY Todd Burtron introduced an ordinance during the council’s Sept. 23 meeting that would set salaries of city staff for the 2020 calendar year.

If approved, most positions would receive an approximate 2.6 percent pay increase.

“We do have what I believe is a very

competitive benefits portfolio. I would argue that we’re not overbenefitted, and we’re not overpaid, but that remains a topic of debate in the community,” Burtron said.

Holcomb may face challenger

By Maria Cook news@currentinwestfield.com The Indiana Republican Party hasn’t had a contested gubernatorial primary since 2004, but that could soon change.

ELECTION Brian Roth, who lives in Westfield near the Carmel border, has announced his intention to run for governor against Republican incumbent Eric Holcomb in the 2020 primary.

Roth was reared in Upland, where he attended Taylor University and earned a degree in physics before serving 22 years in the Navy. Roth and his wife, Sharice, and three children settled in Michigan for a time.

After moving back to Indiana, Roth started a Carmel-based leadership development firm called Employment 2 Deployment.

Roth said that his run will ensure that voters have choices. He has made an unusual promise: To donate the entirety of the salary he would earn as governor to nonprofit organizations.

“We’re not looking for a job,” he said of himself and his family. “We don’t think professional politicians are the best thing for Indiana or, frankly, for the nation. When you

pick up a job, it’s something you get paid to do, and we’re not looking for that. We served for 22 years in the Navy, and we’re just looking for another opportunity to serve again.”

Roth emphasized that his first goal is to get on the ballot. To do so, he will need to collect 500 signatures from each Congressional district. Should he succeed, Roth said his campaign will focus on a “united but independent Indiana” in which Hoosiers find their own way toward national goals.

Anker aims to help fill gap between open jobs, unemployed as Ivy Tech Community College’s board chair

Terry Anker views Ivy Tech Community College’s role in contributing to Indiana’s workforce as crucial.

Anker, a Carmel resiEDUCATION dent, was recently named chair of Ivy Tech Community College’s 15-member State Board of Trustees.

“There are thousands of credentialed jobs that are not getting filled, and that gap is not getting any smaller,” Anker said.

Anker “If there is anything I hope to accomplish, (it) is to help fill gaps between Hoosiers who are under- or unemployed and those employers who are desperately looking for credentialed employees to fill those jobs.”

Anker said Ivy Tech is uniquely positioned to fill the gaps, for students and employers.

The chair is a one-year term and it’s possible the board could renew it for another year. Anker was first appointed to the board by then-Gov. Mike Pence and then got re-appointed by Gov. Eric Holcomb.

“The primary function of the board is as a fiduciary to make sure we are managing the state’s money and donors’ money as properly as we possibly can,” Anker said.

Anker’s first meeting as chair was Oct. 3 at Ivy Tech’s Evansville campus.

“I grew up in a rural area between Monticello and Delphi.

Most of the kids I went to high school with didn’t go on to college,” he said. “The ones that did, a lot of them went to Ivy Tech, and it had a profound, positive impact on their lives. I think now in rural Indiana, it’s become more difficult in some ways to go to college than when I went to IU 35 years ago. It’s more expensive.

“The truth is, if you can’t find access to education, it’s a pretty bleak future, so Ivy Tech has always been important around the state, and I think it’s become more important the last couple of years. It certainly is to kids that grew up like me.”

Anker has a bachelor’s degree in speech communication from Indiana University and a law degree from the School of Law in Bloomington The fact that students can attend Ivy Tech for $4,000 a year makes it affordable for most Hoosiers, Anker said.

“You can walk away with a credential or degree that is

marketable,” he said.

Anker said many Ivy Tech students go on to attend a fouryear college.

“Last year, I went to a reception for a student who went two years at Ivy Tech and then went on to Harvard,” Anker said. “He made the choice to go to Ivy Tech because of value.

It was a lot less expensive for him to start at Ivy Tech.”

Anker’s leadership role on the Ivy Tech State Board of Trustees continues his relationship with Ivy Tech, as he has served on the Ivy Tech Foundation Board in the past, including as its board chair.

School earns Blue Ribbon honor

EDUCATION Given annually to both public and private schools across the nation, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos recognized St. Maria Goretti Catholic School among 12 other schools in Indiana.

“This validates everything we work hard for on a daily basis,” Principal Vince Barnes said. ”This recognition also allows our parish and the larger community to know more that great things are happening daily at St. Maria Goretti School.”

Earning the title in 2013, this is the second time the school has received the designation.

NinjaZone helps spur growth of gymnastics among boys

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Casey Wright wanted to boost the number of boys in her gymnastics program.

“We then had three gyms ATHLETICS with three classes (total) with only 10 boys,” she said. “I was talking to a mom in the bleachers and she said her son would absolutely love this kind of activity, but her husband wouldn’t go for it because it was gymnastics. Originally, it was a way to rebrand and re-market a gymnastics-like program for boys. Since then, it’s morphed into so much more.”

So, she developed NinjaZone.

“It took off with the popularity of ‘American Ninja Warrior’ and emergence of parkour, which is like street gymnastics, jumping on walls and climbing from building to building and the principles of gymnastics and martial arts,” the Carmel resident said.

“A lot of our character development comes from the martial arts piece. Ten boys (in the program) went to 365 kids in six months, and at that point I knew I had something pretty special. That was huge because gymnastics is typically 95 percent girls.”

Wright, 41, owns five Indianapolis-area corporate gyms, which have NinjaZones.

There is a NinjaZone Academy in Geist.

Wright started testing the NinjaZone concept at her Greenwood gym at the end of 2013. She said she built FUNdamentals Gymnastics in Westfield in early 2015 and offered it there. The concept went national later in 2015.

There are now 335 licensed NinjaZone locations around the world.

NinjaZone started primarily for boys but is open to boys and girls, although the number of boys in the program is much higher than girls.

The growth led to Wright being named the 2019 Small Business Person of the Year for Indiana by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

“It’s more of a holistic approach,” she said. “We are teaching them not only athletic skills but character-development skills, just life skills. The program has a perfect fusion of everything parents want for children at that age and gives them the foundation to go on and do whatever sport they wanted to as they get older. What really makes us different is we focus on the kids-centric coaches. We train all our coaches that the

kid, the whole child, comes before the sport that they do, and that’s more important.”

NinjaZone is primarily for ages 18 months to 13 years old.

Geist resident Dan New’s son John, 6, started when he was 4 years old.

“He loves it,” New said. “My son loves to watch ‘American Ninja Warrior,’ so I think that show has brought awareness to this kind of movement. Instead of being in a leotard doing gymnastics, you are still doing a lot of the same movements, but it’s called different stuff. And there is more obstacle play kind of stuff.”

New said if his son wants to play another sport, NinjaZone will help with balance and coordination. New said he likes seeing his son’s face after working to overcome obstacles.

“It’s such a great life skill,” he said.

There are two brands: Wright’s Gymnastics Academy, for more competitive gymnastics, and Wright’s FUNdamentals Gymnastics, which focuses more on recreation for younger kids and not competitive teams.

Wright said the company is building a $5 million multi-sport facility at Grand Park in Westfield. She wants to open it in the summer of 2020.

WWS construction views mixed

SCHOOLS Do not ask Westfield High School students about construction. There will be many groans.

WHS is taking on some big changes in the next few years. Students have said goodbye to the Learning Center, made room for some new science labs and prepared for the addition of more classrooms. All of these changes have thrown students, and teachers, for a loop. Finding new ways to make things work is now part of WHS’s daily agenda.

For students like senior Maddee Aaron, construction has been something to look forward to.

“I think that the construction is going to be really cool once it’s finished,” Aaron said.

“I’m super-disappointed I won’t be around to see the changes, though. I look forward to all the other students getting to enjoy the new things and not be as overcrowded as we are now.”

However, some aspects of construction aren’t as exciting.

“The construction can be really distracting at times, especially while trying to take a test and all you can hear is them working,” Aaron said.

Teachers around the school also have found themselves affected by the ongoing construction on a day-to-day basis.

“It can get a little noisy sometimes, so I get a little distracted myself,” Spanish teacher Kerrie Mares Bell said. “The students have been awesome in staying focused with me.”

The Kiwanis Club of Westfield recently put up an Avenue of Flags to welcome home a U.S. Navy veteran.

MILITARY Eric Miner returned from a four-year naval commitment Sept. 22 to flags placed on his street.

The gesture, called the Avenue of Flags, is an ongoing project by the Kiwanis Club of Westfield to honor military service members and the U.S., in general.

Karen Miner, Eric Miner’s mother, said the gesture is a perfect example of Kiwanis’ goal to create a welcome-home program for veterans.

“Many of our neighbors didn’t know about Avenue of Flags, but now they do. They can’t wait to sign up for next year,” Karen Miner said.

The initiative, which began in May 2017, places flags in front yards of residents who want to celebrate Independence Day, Memorial Day and Labor Day. The flags are removed the day after the holiday to help

preserve them for the next holiday.

Karen Miner said her son appreciated the flags as well as his welcoming neighbors.

“He thought the flags were very cool,” Karen Miner said.

The club also supports Westfield High School students by providing scholarships, and also assists the Westfield Youth Assistant Program and Student Impact by giving donations.

Bar crawl to fundraise for Westfield firefighter with cancer

On Oct. 12, the Wendy L. Hudson Appendix Cancer Awareness Foundation will conduct its third annual #Cancersucks EVENT Bar Crawl in Fishers. The event is a fundraiser for Westfield firefighter Chris Dickover, who is battling prostate cancer, and will include a 50/50 raffle to raise funds for breast cancer survivor Tarena Lewis.

The Wendy L. Hudson Appendix Cancer Awareness Foundation is a nonprofit named in honor of Wendy L. Hudson, a Fishers resident. Hudson died from appendix cancer in 2018.

The foundation’s CEO Jennifer Haslett said the bar crawl will begin at 2 p.m. and will include a march down 116th Street in honor of loved ones affected by cancer.

“We’ll start off at Wolfie’s on 96th (Street) and Hague (Road) at 2 p.m. and we’ll be there roughly one hour,” Haslett said. “Then we’ll go to Four Day Ray Brewing from 3 to 4, then at 4 we’ll march down 116th with

picket signs in honor of loved ones affected by cancer. Then we march to our final destination, which is Chatham Tap.” Haslett said more than 100 people will likely participate and that the foundation wants to surpass the $7,000 it raised in 2018. The Cabin opens new counseling center in Westfield, offers financial assistance

Deidra Rausch knows traditional therapy works for some, but it’s not always accessible to those who need it most.

That’s where The Cabin comes into play, COVER STORY a nonprofit professional counseling center that financially assists patients through the Samaritan Fund.

A sliding scale is used to determine payment, based on the number of people per household, the household’s gross income and the federal poverty scale. The range is $34 an hour up to $150 an hour, for those who don’t qualify for assistance. This year, The Cabin has provided $105,000 in financial assistance.

Rausch, The Cabin’s executive director and only therapist with a doctorate on staff, started with The Cabin as its clinical director in 1999. She became executive director in 2002. The Cabin operated out of the Zionsville Presbyterian Church until it opened its facility at 220 S. Elm St., Zionsville, in 2010.

For the past 20 years, The Cabin has operated in Boone County, but a recent expansion will offer Hamilton County residents services closer to home. The Cabin recently opened its second standalone location at 121 S. Walnut St. in Westfield. There also is a satellite location on Oak Street in Zionsville.

“The (Zionsville) Cabin is on Elm Street, there’s a satellite on Oak, and The (Westfield) Cabin is on Walnut, so we are just in the trees,” Rausch said. “I looked at our ZIP codes, and we actually serve 93 different ZIP codes in the state of Indiana. We felt we wanted to move east because often the reason folks don’t pursue mental health care is cost and access.

“Our hope is moving an office into the Westfield area will help those Carmel, Noblesville and Westfield folks.”

Rausch said The Cabin offers treatment for people of all ages, including children and the elderly. It provides therapy for individuals, couples and families for anxiety, depression, marital problems, addiction, infertility, pregnancy loss, transition issues like a second career or retirement and more.

“Some of the things that make us unique is we do typical talk therapy in a room, but we also have an adventure therapy program which might find clients walking trails, climbing trees and kayak therapy,” Rausch said. “Non-traditional approaches work really well, especially with teenagers who aren’t really into sitting in a room and talking about feelings.

“Some adults prefer to be outside walking on a trail than sitting in a room.”

The Cabin also offers an expressive arts therapy program.

“The fun thing about the (Westfield) space is it has a detached garage, and we are going to call that the studio. One of the clinicians over there is completing their certificate as a personal trainer, and we can merge a therapy session and personal training,” Rausch said. “It’s a different form of

adventure therapy, and then the art therapist can use the studio for painting and movement. Our plan is a gal here always wanted to do yoga workshops, so it’s a bigger space to do more creative things.

“I think traditional therapy is great, but it’s not for everybody, so we want to make therapy accessible to everybody in a format that speaks to them.”

The Cabin also allows people to meet therapists to learn

which person would be the best fit.

“If you don’t (have a rapport) with a therapist, nothing is going to happen,” Raush said. “We provide a meet-and-greet appointment to try out a therapist before paying. That’s especially important with teenagers.”

LETTER Hold everyone accountable

Company of one Commentary by Terry Anker In the 1932 movie “Grand Hotel,” smoldering film star Greta Garbo exclaims repeatedly, “I want to be alone.” As the plot progresses, reallife reclusive actress begins a romantic relationship with a stranger to whom she had earlier proclaimed the need for solitude, thus guaranteeing that she would assuredly no longer be alone. The fictional character finds happiness only when she admits a secret desire to be anything but lonesome.

We good people often live the paradox. Certainly, those of us who are not blessed (or cursed) by a genetic predisposition to extroversion understand. While time engaged in the company of others is good, even necessary, the time we spend alone is restorative and, likewise, required for good health.

The needed allotment is not consistent across all persons. Something in us drives a longing for our own fortress of solitude, just as the same internal voice demands that we seek shared space.

In marriages, offices and crowded buses, we find ourselves pursuing intimacy while quietly hoping for independent identity. We alternate between striking up conversations and withdrawing, earbuds in place, into our own thoughts. How do we find the right balance? How do we give, and get, fully while still holding something back just for us?

Is there a way to simultaneously be entirely engaged and fully autonomous? With differing personality needs, who decides the standard?

It is another actress, Belgium-born Audrey Hepburn, who summed it up thusly: “I don’t want to be alone, I want to be left alone.”

Who said ‘one’ is easy?

Commentary by Danielle Wilson Stupid sick kids. They ruin everything! Or at least give me high blood pressure. When does parenting get easy?

I thought with three away HUMOR at college, I’d be mostly home free. My 15-year-old is fairly self-reliant and usually so busy with school and dance that I don’t see much of her. But she caught a nasty bug this past week and sent everything into turmoil.

For starters, the nurse practitioner declared her ickiness to be viral, which meant no quick antibiotic fix. I was pulling for strep when I dragged her to the Minute Clinic on the third day of 103-degree-plus temperatures, but no such luck. We left with instructions to treat symptoms and to prepare for potentially 10 more days of lethargy, body aches, fever and sore throat. Obviously, school was out, but I didn’t want to take off work to watch her. So, after maybe seven seconds of contemplation, I decided she’d

be fine on her own. What’s the worst that could happen? I mean, if its bubonic plague, there’s nothing I can do anyway. Good luck, little lady! Don’t you go dying on me! Yeah, Mom of the Year right here.

And I was actually more stressed about the amount of classes she was missing.

Five-days’ worth could seriously derail her quest to beat her siblings for highest GPA, not to mention send her into a whirlwind of anxiety about catching up — a true nightmare for me as a mother.

It’s hard when your baby is sick and you can’t do a darn thing to make her better. I guess I just assumed once I was down to one, parenting would be easy. Friends, I was wrong.

Mueller’s investigation, of which was undeniably a “witch hunt,” was not to convict or to exonerate; that determination is done by the Dept. of Justice. Mueller and his politically motivated staff did indeed do a job, which morphed into a two-year carpetbombing mission, and which failed to force charges against the president. Where is Wendy’s outrage over the massive cost to the taxpayers? Where is her outrage over the FISA Court abuse?

Bottom line: Hold everyone accountable, not just those one despises. Doing nothing will ensure that this abuse will repeat.

As the stomach churns Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I created quite a stir during services last Sunday morning. Mary Ellen was embarrassed when she first heard it.

HUMOR She thought I should excuse myself from the sanctuary.

Was that my stomach growling?

No one has this identification problem with other bodily eruptions. Everyone clearly knows who the originator is - although with one sound in particular (and its result), there is usually blame-shifting that unfairly maligns the family dog. But with things like sneezing, hiccupping and coughing, it’s seldom an issue.

I’ll admit that I have loud internal plumbing. Each week, I record an audio tease for my television segments on WISH-TV. My producer said recently: “Let’s do that last line over again, Dick. I just heard the building’s sewer back up.”

The technical name for a grumbling stomach comes from the Greek word borborygmos. The dictionary says this is an example of onomatopoeia, a word that imitates the sound associated with something. Now, before you start Googling (which also is medical jargon for what my stomach is do-

Indiana’s unemployment rate still falling — Two positive takeaways from Indiana’s August employment report: The state’s unemployment rate last month fell to its lowest level in 18 months, and the number of unemployment insurance claims dropped to their lowest level this year. Indiana’s jobless rate dipped in August to a preliminary 3.3 percent from 3.4 percent in July, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Local coffee shops serve up fall favorites

Candlelight Theatre has a spooky special for Halloween by presenting “Ghost Tales of the Civil War” by resident playwright James Trofatter at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site on select dates in October.

The full-length play is replete with, historical artifacts and the rich ambience of President Benjamin Harrison’s original furnishings, making it a one-of-a-kind theater experience.

Candlelight Theatre founder and creative director Donna Wing, a Geist resident, will appear in the performances. Hamilton County performers include Emily Jackson, Carmel; Ann Richards, Fishers; and John West, Noblesville.

Dates are Oct. 11, 12, 18, 19, 26 and 27. The performances at the site, 1230 North Delaware St., Indianapolis, begin every half-hour, with six shows each day, 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Sundays.

Owner Rachel Priddy didn’t want to wait around until the shop was ready, so she and her family converted a trailer into a mobile coffee shop. Priddy sets up in the parking lot on 146th Street and Community Drive, where her new store will be built. Hours from 7 a.m. to noon on weekdays. She is serving lattes, nitro cold brew and hot coffee to folks on their way to work in what is called the “coffee desert” of Hamilton County by local coffee drinkers. I ordered the pistachio latte and sampled the Costa Rican drip coffee, both of which warmed me right up on an autumn morning.

History of the Desert of the Lions Commentary by Don Knebel Much of Mexico City, a city of almost 9 million people, is crowded and noisy. But an hour’s drive from the center of TRAVEL the city is a still-peaceful area that was once the home of unusual monks seeking to be closer to God. In 1521, Spanish forces led by Hernán Cortés captured the area that is now Mexico City from the Aztecs. To help convert the indigenous people to Christianity, Catholic monks soon began arriving from Spain, including the so-called ”barefoot Carmelites,” who claimed a spiritual linkage to Jewish hermits once living on Israel’s Mount Carmel. They got their name from the requirement that they walk barefoot and took vows of poverty, chastity and absolute silence. In 1606, after having established convents among the villages in the valley, the Carmelites built a convent in an uninhabited wooded area in the mountains west of the villages, about 5,000 feet above the valley floor, where they could meditate without distractions. In 1722, the monks demolished their deteriorating convent and replaced it

with a still-standing domed structure that included a chapel and rooms for visiting monks. They named their 4,600-acre site “Desierto de los Leones” (“Desert of the Lions”) after its isolated (deserted) location and the pumas prowling the forests.

By the middle of the 19th century, the Carmelites had abandoned the Desert of the Lions, which became Mexico’s first protected forest in 1876. After use as a military headquarters, the area became Mexico’s first national park in 1917. Today, the Desert of the Lions and its immaculately maintained grounds are within the boundaries of Mexico City. Some rooms within the convent building are now museums, illustrating the life of the monks who once lived there. The still-active chapel and gardens are popular for weddings and quinceañeras, parties recognizing a 15-year-old girl’s coming of age.

Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Mondegreen!

After a quick Google search, it appears as though both Mondegreen and The Mondegreens are already band names. All the good ones are taken.

Because I don’t want to get in a legal battle with either band, I’ll just tell you about the term “mondegreen” instead.

A mondegreen is a term for a misheard music lyric that you sing or hear instead of the correct lyrics. Writer Sylvia Wright coined the term in 1954 in an article for Harper’s Bazaar, in which she recounted a misunderstood song lyric from “The Bonny of Earl Murray.” Instead of the actual lyrics “...and layd him on the green,” Wright heard “and Lady Mondegreen.”

I love mondegreens. Some notable mondegreens include lyrics from Jimi Hendrix’s song “Purple Haze.” “Excuse me while I kiss this guy” instead of “excuse

me while I kiss the sky” often is heard.

Pretty much every line from Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” is easy to mishear. “Hold me close now Tiny Dancer” really does sound like “folding clothes with Tony Danza.”

I’ve also heard people think this line said, “Happy birthday, private waxer” and “Hold me close, I’m tired of dancing.”

Our brains hear these musical words and interpret them as whatever sounds make the most sense. That’s why, when we’re listening to a Pat Benetar hit, we’re prone to hearing “Hit me with your pet shark” instead of “Hit me with your best shot.” I think I like the “pet shark” line better.

I could go on and on with examples of familiar mondegreens, but I want to take a moment to dub the already-knighted Elton John as the King of the Mondegreens.

So, if you ever hear me going on about some guy named “Monty Green,” you may want to look up the lyrics to find out what I’m actually singing.
