What happened: The council approved a new planned unit development, Alpha Tau. What it means: Petitioner Alpha Tau Enterprises requested to rezone approximately 8.42 acres at 510 E. Ind. 32 from enclosed industrial to general business to make way for a new commercial development. The ordinance was approved 4-0.

What happened: The council approved a new planned unit development, Spring Mill Centre.

What it means: Zentz Consulting requested a change in zoning for the Spring Mill Centre planned unit development at the northeast corner of Ind. 32 and Spring Mill Road to change zoning on a 57-acre plot from enclosed industrial, open industrial and agriculture/singlefamily rural district to general business and enclosed industrial.

The plan will designate three subdistricts on the land. The southernmost subdistricts will be used for future development of retail, restaurant and office space. The northernmost subdistrict will have light industrial or manufacturing business, small-scale distribution or a small office park.

What happened: The council approved a rezoning request for Springmill Pointe.

What it means: Petitioner Westfield Investment Co. requested a change in zoning to general business for a commercial development, Springmill Pointe, on approximately 8.55 acres at the southwest corner of Ind. 32 and Austrian Pine Way. The ordinance repeals and replaces the Maple Knoll planned unit development The council approved the ordinance 4-0.

What happened: The council approved an amendment to traffic regulations in the city.

What it means: The Westfield Dept. of Public Works requested an amendment to regulations in the municipal traffic code. The DPW said the proposed changes are a result of the city taking ownership of new roads because traffic regulations were updated last year. Changes include regulation of roads in new subdivisions, the addition of no parking signs in some neighborhoods, stop control changes at Ind. 32 and Ditch Road and Gunther Boulevard and Heathcliff Court and speed limit changes in the neighborhoods of Maple Knoll, Maple Village/Sonoma, Viking Meadows and Villages of Oak Manor.

The ordinance was approved 4-0.

What happened: A public hearing was held for two ordinances regarding the 2019 general obligation bond.

What happened: The council approved an amendment to the city’s unified development ordinance.

What it means: Initially adopted in September 2014, city staff requested several changes to the unified development ordinance, which include changes to triplex and quadraplex standards, side setbacks, perimeter landscaping for shared parking areas, subdivision block parties and more. The amendment also sets open-space standards for new development, requiring a minimum of 50 percent of a development’s open space not be encumbered by wetlands, legal drains, easements and similar land.

The amendment was approved 4-0.

What happened: City staff introduced an ordinance creating a new fund in the city’s budget.

What it means: If approved by council, Fund 638, the Grand Park Food and Beverage Tax, will be implemented in 2020. Clerk-Treasurer Cindy Gossard said the request to create the fund was received from city administration to move money from the food and beverage tax to the Grand Park bank account beginning in January 2020. Food and beverage tax revenues historically have been deposited into the city’s general fund. The new fund would pay for expenses related to Grand Park.

Because the presentation of the ordinance was an introduction, no vote was taken. The council will vote at its Oct. 14 meeting.

What it means: Councilor Jim Ake said the city’s annual general obligation bond is in place as a financial sustainability measure. The bond typically covers costs associated with public safety vehicles and equipment. This year’s bond – not to exceed $5 million – will again finance those items but also will help finance the Jersey Street extension project and technological equipment for the police and fire departments.

Resident Linda Naas, representing the 161st Street neighbors, raised concerns about the increase in the annual bond appropriation.

A vote will be taken for the ordinances at the Oct. 14 city council meeting.

What happened: City staff introduced the 2020 salary ordinance for non-elected officials.

What it means: If approved, non-elected city staff will receive an approximate 2.6 percent pay increase in 2020.

Because the presentation was only an introduction, no vote was taken. The council will vote at its Oct. 14 meeting.

What happened: The council approved a rezoning request for Cedarbrook Commons.

What it means: Petitioner Craigielea Enterprises, LLC by William Tres Development requested rezoning approximately 16 acres at the northwest corner of 186th Street and Spring Mill Road from agricultural/single-family rural to local business for a commercial development, to be known as Cedarbrook Commons. The ordinance repeals and replaces the Springmill Trails planned unit development.

The council approved the ordinance 4-0.

Residents want transparency on ’20 budget for $42.5m

The Westfield City Council and city staff recently heard feedback from residents regardGOVERNMENT ing the 2020 budget.

At its Sept. 23 meeting, the council held a hearing for public input on the proposed $42.5 million opHavard erating budget, highlights of which include the potential hiring of 10 new police officers, three new firefighters, four new hires in the department of public works and raises for non-elected city staff.

When the budget was introduced at the council’s Sept. 9 meeting, Tammy Havard, a financial strategist for the city, said expenses were up from last year’s budget by approximately $3.5 million.

During the Sept. 23 meeting, Marla Ailor, a resident of Westfield Washington Township but not of the City of Westfield, chose to speak during the public hearing, but before making her comments, she was addressed

by Mayor Andy Cook.

“Ms. Ailor, before you begin, shouldn’t you be directing your budget concerns to the county council?” he said. “To the best of my knowledge, you are not a resident of the City of Westfield, and therefore your taxes don’t go here. I’m sure our council would be glad to listen to your concerns, but I would like to note that you are not a resident of the City of Westfield, am I correct?”

Ailor acknowledged that she isn’t, but justified the need to voice her concerns.

“I am acutely aware that some of you may dismiss what I have to say because I don’t live within the city limits,” she said.

“As a resident of the township and this county, whose household pays (county option income tax, local income tax) and food and beverage tax, I most certainly feel I have the right and personal obligation to comment on the city’s proposed budget.

Specifically, I have concerns with the food and beverage tax being removed from the general fund and moved to a new fund,

which will pay for (Indianapolis Colts training camp). Are we supposed to believe that an increase in sales for a period of three weeks out of the year can solely be attributed to people attending Colts Camp?

“It seems far more likely that the people of this community, including myself, who spend their money 52 weeks a year at our local (establishments) are the ones that should be rewarded for the acCook cumulation of the tax, so whether that is funding road improvements or purchasing tangible items for their safety, it seems unbelievable that it would be used for anything other than the good of the very people you collected it from.”

Linda Naas, a resident representing the 161st Street Neighbors Group, asked the council for a comprehensive list of city projects, along with a comparison to the 2019 budget.

“As people look at (the budget) this year, they’re making the same comment they made for the past several,” Naas said.

“There is very little information given to the public about this budget to consider what our comments and concerns are. Even with tax caps and an even tax rate, taxpayers will have an increase in taxes due to an increase in the (assessed value of their homes).”

Naas echoed Ailor’s comments regarding revenues from the food and beverage tax.

“Revenues should not be going to Grand Park or Colts camp,” she said. “Revenues were half of this or more before Colts camp and before Grand Park even opened. We’re going to spend $120,000 for an asphalt pad for this camp, over $400,000 for lodging, $341,000 for bleachers, plus hundreds of thousands more for a $53,000 payment from the Colts annually, in addition to the already immeasurable cost for PR. “This really needs a (return on investment) assessment. Everything is being done to draw people to Westfield, but is there a limit or a point that makes sense? What is the reality of these dreams (versus) the cost to the residents?”

Foundations award scholarships — Central Indiana Community Foundation and its affiliates, The Indianapolis Foundation and Hamilton County Community Foundation, have awarded 185 scholarships totaling more than $1.4 million for the 2019-20 academic year. Superintendent addresses WWS’ plan for enrollment growth

As expected, Westfield Washington Schools enrollment continues to grow.

WWS Supt. Sherry Grate EDUCATION addressed ways the district has planned for that growth at the Sept. 19 Westfield Chamber of Commerce luncheon at The Club at Chatham Hills in Westfield. The district is in the process of using $90 million to renovate and expand intermediate, middle school and high school projects.

The preliminary enrollment for 2019-20 is 8,338, up 309 students from the 2018-19 school year. Since 2015-16, the district has grown by more than 1,100 students.

Grate said the high school enrollment is approximately 2,200.

“Our middle and intermediate school projects will roughly be done at the end of 2019,” Grate said.

The high school project was started approximately six months after the intermediate and middle school projects.

“The high school project is being done in phases and is much more complex, as you might imagine,” Grate said.

Grate said the high school project will likely continue through 2020.

The front parking lot was completely renovated during the summer. Additional spaces on the north end of the high school also were added.

“With the expansion and renovations and as we go through the different phases, that will continue to alleviate congestion in the halls,” Grate said. “What’s really awesome about the additions is when you walk right into the high school, there will be a grand staircase. That will be one opportunity to open up different pathways for students.

When the other wing opens up, that will open up ways for students to get to and from classes.”

Housing data is sent monthly to the district’s demographer.

“After the 2020 census, we looked at anything that was an anomaly to make any adjustments in our plans,” Grate said. “But so far, he’s been spot on.”

The pool in the middle school has been closed to reallocate space.

“The high school pool will remain open until we are able to get our natatorium constructed,” Grate said. “We’re super-excited about the public-private partnership with

the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis.”

Grate shared a video of the plan, called “Growing the Rock Way.” Grate said the plan took into account factors such as enrollment, demographic projects, facility planning, tax and debt service and assessed evaluation.

“We are one of the fastest-growing school districts in Indiana,” Grate said.

“Development continues to explode, which means our student population is growing.”

Grate said the construction projects were necessary because the schools’ capacities were reaching their limits.

To address capacity concerns at the elementary school level, the plan is to build an early learning center for the TOTS program and development preschool program. It also could house the central office.

Grate said pulling the programs out of the elementary schools will free nearly 21 classroom spaces across the district.

“It also could potentially eliminate the need for redistricting,” she said. “It would eliminate the monthly lease payments for central office.”

At the high school, the plan is for the addition-large-group instructional space.

“We also are going through discussions about alternative learning,” she said. “I don’t know if that will encompass new construction or use of another facility. We are using our demographics study to drive what those projects should be. It also depends on, ‘What does learning look like in five years, 10 years or 20 years?’”

The operating referendum will be set for 2023, when the seven-year referendum expires.

“When that would be renewed, it would be for eight years,” she said.

Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County recently held its sixth annual Dancing With Our Stars fundraising event at Embassy Suites Conference Center in Noblesville last month. Proceeds from the event benefited Meals on Wheels, and the evening raised more than $46,000 in donations. Local professional dancers were paired with business and community leaders to learn a dance routine for the competition. Bharat Patel and Yulia Shook took home the People’s Choice Award. Hamilton County Community Foundation awards $177,000

The Hamilton County Community Foundation has awarded $177,000 to 13 organizations.

GRANTS The grants were awarded to nonprofits that focus on mental health, family and youth empowerment and inclusive economic growth.

The foundation also awarded multi-year Poole grants to Ivy Tech Community College of Hamilton County and to the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis for the soon-to-be-built Westfield YMCA. Mackenzie Poole, community leadership officer for the foundation, said her organization helps nonprofits deal with an array of community issues.

“What we’re really trying to do is work with the nonprofits to move the

needle on certain areas like mental health, family and youth environment, which is basic needs, and inclusive economic growth,” Poole said.

Altrusa Club donates to WWPL

By Sophie Nulph news@currentinwestfield.com Westfield Washington Public Library recently received a donation of 600 pre-kindergarten activity calendars for the school READING year from Altrusa Club of Hamilton County. The club announced the second phase of its literacy project to help pre-kindergarten children prepare for their first school year.

Last year, the club received a grant from Altrusa International to deliver activity calendars to help guide parents and children on books to read and exercises to practice. This year, the club received two grants – one for activity calendars and another for a donation of children’s books. It then donated 75 “Pete the Cat” books and 600 calendars to the WWPL’s children’s department. The books were so popular that they were gone shortly after the display was set up, but calendars are still available at the children’s department desk.

their kids,” Rader said. “(The calendars are) for parents who aren’t in the teaching background to help get their kids ready for school.”

WWPL Director Sheryl Sollars said the calendars encourage reading.

“It just encourages reading throughout the entire year,” Sollars said. “It gets kids excited about reading books.”

The library also takes the calendars to the outreach programs it presents throughout the year.

In the meantime, the county will fund the difference.

Instead of municipalities paying their portion, Hamilton County will collect and distribute funding. Although Westfield, nor any other city or town, will not receive revenue, the four cities will save money.

In 2019, Westfield paid $859,195.62 for 911 dispatch services. In the future, that money can now be used elsewhere in the city budget.

Hamilton County stands to receive approximately $3 million in revenue, according to Mike Howard, who serves as the attorney for the Hamilton County Commissioners and City of Noblesville.

“There have been some questions about how this will raise revenue when combined with the phone fees that generate a little over $3 million a year. I think in Hamilton County, we proved about a year ago that we have an A1 operation, and we sure want to keep it that way,” said Howard, referencing the May 25, 2018 shooting at Noblesville West Middle School. “There are some substantial costs coming up. The (communications) center that is in the lower level of the jail, they’re outgrowing that rapidly.

The demand for services from our population increases every day. In addition, there are new software systems that can be out there that aren’t (currently) in the budget.”

The one-tenth of 1 percent increase means that a person annually earning $50,000 will pay $50 more per year.

The tax increase will go into effect Jan. 1, 2020.

New director of global strategy helps market city to international businesses

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Westfield is working to draw international businesses to the city. The city’s new director of Global COVER STORY Strategy and Business Development, Kai Chuck, is helping city staff accomplish the goal.

Chuck was hired earlier this year. He previously was director of Asia and Automotive Development for the Indiana Economic Development Corp.

“My main goals are to promote the City of Westfield in terms of the global market to attract more companies to Westfield and to create more jobs to help fill that park, our Northpoint Business Park,” Chuck said. “I helped bring Bastian (Solutions) here at the state level.”

Chuck worked for the state for more than 10 years before transitioning to his municipal role in Westfield.

“In other cities, you will have an economic development director and they do both attractions locally and attractions on a global basis,” Chuck said. “This particular case is highly specialized because we have Bastian, part of the Toyota industries, and that’s a Japanese-owned company.

“Based on my background and my skill set, we are targeting Japanese companies to develop that relationship, and that’s

Besides Japan, Chuck is looking to attract businesses from Canada and Western Europe. He has contacts from those areas from his previous job. Recently, he and Westfield Mayor Andy Cook and Chief of Staff Todd Burtron traveled to Japan on a business development trip led by Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb and the Indiana Economic

Chuck is fluent in English, Japanese and speaks some Mandarin.

“It’s helpful. I do speak different languages, mostly Asian-based languages,” Chuck said. “The most important thing is you understand the culture and the business aspects of it.”

One of the City of Westfield’s Director of Global Strategy and Business Development Kai Chuck’s strengths is his understanding of, and background working with, different cultures.

“One thing he’s already done because of his experience is he’s sat with all the directors and talked to us about the different cultures and how he’s observed we should behave around certain people when they visit, which has been very helpful and eye-opening,” Westfield Communications Director Vicki Duncan Gardner said.

For example, Chuck said when Japanese officials visit, city staff should keep the interaction business-focused and centered on relationship-building.

“It’s much more formal in nature in terms of how you interact,” Chuck said.

“You start building that relationship and getting that familiarity between you.”

Duncan Gardner said there are cultural differences in greetings, too, such as making sure staff arrive prior to the guest.

“Their importance is the customer is first, the customer is king, so when you go to meetings, you arrive early to meetings,” Chuck said. “So, usually in the United States if the meeting starts at 10:30 (a.m.), in Japan you would get there at 10:15 because you value the customer’s time and you don’t want to waste the customer’s time. It’s a very important aspect to doing business in Japan.”

Protect our Second Amendment

Commentary by Terry Anker Do little kids still learn to ride bikes? There was a time, not so long ago in America, when every child had a bicycle and knew how to ride it. Outside the small-town pharmacy with the soda fountain, there would be a pile of them strewn on the sidewalk, as if their owners couldn’t wait to park them properly before rushing to the candy counter. But today, one is more likely to see the youngsters piling out of the family SUV with some patient adult texting away while sitting on the front seat.

Is it that we have more time to deliver them to their many obligations? Is it that they are too tired from travel soccer? Is it that rising crime leads us to fear allowing them to bike or walk to the corner store? Is it that the corner store has been replaced with some behemoth retail outlet where one needs a bicycle to manage the aisles rather than one to get there?

Regardless the reason, these small humans have stopped pedaling.

Maybe it is a good thing. Isn’t it always better to get a ride than walk? Isn’t it always better to be a passenger than in charge? Well, maybe not so much. What is being taken away from our kids in our generous desire to “help” them?

What skill is not being developed?

What confidence is not being found? Without unnecessarily waxing poetic about the halcyon days of yore, we did learn that a bent nail can repair a broken bicycle chain in a pinch. And, we all knew that we had to get home before the tire went completely flat or we’d be walking. Maybe it is not a video game, but isn’t it something?

Not missing toddler time Commentary by Danielle Wilson Oh, my goodness, I can’t tell you how happy I am not to be pregnant and/or raising toddlers. Wait. Who am I kidding? Of course I can tell you!

A friend of mine is in labor HUMOR as I type. First baby, doesn’t know what she’s having, she’s been simultaneously excited and terrified. I’ve watched her go from “looking pregnant” to having to elevate her swollen feet after waddling a short ways, hand to lower back. She’s had to consider pediatricians and car seats and finding the perfect name that satisfies not only her and her husband but also her parents and in-laws, and one that won’t be associated with the next Hollywood scandal.

She’s learned Lamaze and built a crib and survived awkward baby showers, all without the help of caffeine or booze. And now, after 10 months, she’s literally birthing that little miracle through the sheer superpower of womanhood. I’m exhausted just writing this

paragraph.

And that’s only the beginning. Soon, that precious angel will start to walk and talk and attempt to scale the pantry shelves. My youngest sister was visiting with her kiddos, 3 and newly 5, and I couldn’t help but flash back to my own era with preschoolers.

Sugar-induced tantrums, the battle over bedtimes, lost woobies, poopy pants … the horror! Sure, the wine helps, but keeping those rugrats alive and on the path to eventual home ownership is a constant source of anxiety and sleepless nights. Teenagers bring their own set of worries, but at least you can ship them off to boarding school.

I can’t tell you how great it is to be passed this nonsense!

Today, America is experiencing mass shootings along with individual shootings across the country. I ask, why is this happening now? I grew up in the ’50s and ’60s and we did not experience this. We felt safe.

Is it because the men of then were allowed to be men and would stop such nonsense in its tracks versus people of today being afraid to stand up for what is right when it comes to protecting themselves?

There is an undercurrent which is raising its ugly head in slowly trying to disarm the American citizenry, especially law-abiding gun owners. The Democratic candidates running for president of the United States tout their dislike of firearms and share what they will do if elected president. Why do they want to harm innocent gun owners?

If you are an American citizen, what are you going to do to protect the right of the Second Amendment?

Articulating pandiculation Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Pandiculation is the act of yawning. I’ve always found it embarrassing. I’ll be talking to someone and suddenly find HUMOR myself yawning. That’s when the guy will say, “I’m not boring you, am I?” Here’s my response: “Not at all. People yawn when the pressure in their ears differs from the outside pressure, or from the partial collapse of the air sacs in their lungs, prompting the brain to make them yawn, thus getting more oxygen into the lungs.”

“OK, Dick, now you’re boring me.”

My cat always yawns when she sees me (your pets do the same thing to you, don’t they? Please tell me they do). When I used to get undressed with my dog in the room, he’d take a look, and then he’d yawn. I tried not to take it personally.

My wife doesn’t yawn much, which I thought was evidence of what a snappy conversationalist I am, but at times she exhibits paralinguistic respiration — meaning she sighs audibly. Unlike most cinema reviewers who employ either the thumbs-up or five-star criteria, Mary Ellen practices the sigh standard, exhibited most often when I

drag her to a film she doesn’t want to see.

Years ago, at an Arnold Schwarzenegger flick, she sighed so many times the man next to us thought she was in cardiac arrest and called 911.

Unlike a sigh, a yawn is involuntary. I was at a wedding and I desperately tried to suppress a yawn to not appear rude or uninterested. My face got all twisted and scrunched, but I managed to successfully incorporate the words “I do” into my pandiculation. Even the minister was impressed.

Scientists studied research volunteers who had been deprived of sleep and were asked to read a boring news article with an ice pack on top of their head. Very few yawned. I don’t know who paid for this study, but I wish they’d instead spent that money to find a cure for my gout.

I hope you think this column was worth reading. Personally, I don’t think it’s anything to sternutate at. You can look that one up. But here’s a hint: Gesundheit!

Brehob Nursery celebrates 50 years

By Maria Cook news@currentinwestfield.com Brehob Nursery, a wholesale nursery that specializes in selling plants to landscaping companies, is celebrating its 50th year of busiANNIVERSARY ness. John W. Brehob opened Brehob’s first Indianapolis location in 1969. In 1999, he opened a second location in Westfield.

This year marks the Westfield location’s 20th year.

Brehob Nursery Purchasing Manager Annette Hancock said the company has enjoyed steady business and repeat customers through the years.

“Our culture of doing business hasn’t changed much,” Hancock said. “We’ve got a lot of long-term employees here. I’ve been here for 20 years and some are closer to 30. The biggest change is that the last owner sold the company in 2016, so there’s new ownership.

Other than that, in the last 20 years, we’ve had the same customer base.”

When Brehob’s Westfield store opened in 1999, its nursery farm spanned 65 acres. The space has expanded by more than 20 acres in the last 20 years and is mainly used to grow trees in pot-in-pot sockets. The Westfield location’s office is at 4867 Sheridan Rd. Brehob’s Indianapolis location still operates on the city’s south side, and its farm is approximately 400 acres.

Snyder returns after long hiatus to perform as Donna in Civic Theatre’s ‘Mamma Mia!’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com When Kara Snyder heard Civic Theatre was presenting “Mamma Mia!,” she knew it was time to return to the MUSICAL stage.

“It’s been 15 years since I’ve been on stage doing anything in theater,” Snyder said. “I really love this show.

There are not that many opportunities for shows that I feel I will be a good fit for.”

The Westfield resident, who took a break from acting to raise her four children, will perform as Donna in the musical, which runs Oct. 4 to 19 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

The musical centers on Donna’s daughter, Sophie, who wants to learn the identity of her father on the eve of her wedding.

Her pursuit of the identity brings three men back to the Greek Islands, where they hadn’t been for 20 years.

Snyder said she was in a couple of Civic Theatre shows 15 to 20 years ago.

Snyder said she was even more excited to work on “Mamma Mia!” when she found out Anne Beck was the director and choreographer. Snyder had worked on previous shows when Beck was the music director.

“I directed and choreographed the show last year for Zionsville (Community) High School and was able to learn there was much more to it than the excellent music of ABBA,” said Beck, a Fishers resident.

“It has grown to be a favorite after diving into its script more and more because there are so many themes people of all ages can relate to.”

Beck said the challenge with “Mamma Mia!” is giving equal emphasis to the huge amount of musical numbers and meaty script for Donna’s story and Sophie’s journey.

“With ‘Mamma Mia!’ being an iconic film, more patrons have seen it over the Broadway show,” Beck said. “It is important to make this show our version, let this cast shine, create our own Greek chorus that enhances the story and its characters,

Artisan to demonstrate skills

“I enjoy creating and seeing what happens when the dye or paint flow on the silk or canvas,” said Gray, a Westfield resident and juried Indiana Artisan since 2012. “I find that part of (my) work very relaxing.”

Gray will perform a live demonstration of silk painting during a pair of free events this month at the Indiana Artisan gift shop in Carmel, 22 N. Range Line Rd. The first, “4 Artists, 3 Brushes & 1 Harp,” will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 12 in the garden next to the store. The second, “Tie One On,” will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 13 inside the store.

Life of the beautiful Sisi Commentary by Don Knebel Most visitors to Austria and Hungary soon learn about Elisabeth, the beautiful and troubled Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary widely known as TRAVEL Sisi.

Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie was born in Munich in 1837 to a Bavarian duke and his wife. She had received little formal education when, unknown at age 15, the 5-foot-8 Sisi caught the eye of Franz Joseph I, the 23-year-old Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. Engaged five days after their meeting, they married eight months later in Vienna. The royal court began distributing paintings and busts of the carefree and energetic young queen, claiming that she was the most beautiful woman in Europe. Sisi took this claim seriously, with courtesans spending up to two hours a day arranging her ankle-length dark hair. She reduced her natural 18-inch waist using an imported leather corset that took an hour to lace up. Her ballroom gown with a 16-inch waist is on display at the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. Despite having four

children in rapid succession, she maintained her weight by fasting and constant exercise, weighing herself at least three times a day.

Sisi hated the restricted life in the palace and went on long trips, often to Hungary, which she adored. When her 2-year-old daughter Sophie died in 1857, she entered a period of depression from which she never fully recovered. The depression deepened in 1889 when Crown Prince Rudolf, her only son, died in a suicide pact with his mistress. As Sisi’s beauty faded with age, she avoided public appearances, often traveling incognito. On one such visit to Lake Geneva, Switzerland, in 1898, an anarchist recognized her and stabbed her to death.

Monuments to Sisi soon began appearing all across Europe. One of the most impressive is near a bridge in Budapest named in her honor.

When your significant other starts a conversation with, “So, we need to talk,” you know it’s over.

GRAMMAR GUY You immediately flip through the pages of your relationship, scanning for any glaring issues or things for which you should be sorry. You’re on the defensive.

You might even think about who gets to keep which friend after the impending break-up.

Some — perhaps many — people believe fervently it’s not kosher to begin a sentence with “so.” I’m here to advocate for the use of “so” as an acceptable sentence starter. If this is a deal-breaker for the relationship between you and me, then I agree that it’s time for us to start seeing other people.

“So” is a coordinating conjunction. This type of conjunction’s prime purpose is to join other sentence elements that go together. In case you’re wondering, it’s easy to remember English’s seven coordinating conjunctions — just remember “fanboys.”

Fanboys stands for “for, and, nor, but, or, yet and so.” So, if this type of conjunction

joins related parts of a sentence, how is it acceptable to start a sentence with one? I thought you’d never ask.

According to the Chicago Manual of Style, “There is a widespread belief — one with no historical or grammatical foundation — that it is an error to begin a sentence with a conjunction such as and, but or so. In fact, a substantial percentage (often as many as 10 percent) of the sentences in first-rate writing begin with conjunctions. It has been so for centuries, and even the most conservative grammarians have followed this practice.”

While we could probably connect sentences that begin with “so” to prior sentences with semicolons to show the connection between the two thoughts, we don’t need to do this in everyday speech.

If you’re addressing the U.N., maybe try to avoid starting a sentence with “so.”

Otherwise, you have my permission to “so” away.
