What happened: The council unanimously approved an amendment to the Spring Mill Station Northeast Quadrant PUD for Kroger at 161st Street and Spring Mill Road.

Why it matters: The amendment to the PUD allows the newly-expanded and updated Kroger store to have curb-side pickup for their new online ordering feature. The pickup canopy construction adds approximately 1/2 acre to the site.

What happened: The council approved (6-1, Cindy Spoljaric) an amendment to the Grand Park Indoor Sports and Recreation Facility PUD. Why it matters: The amendment to the PUD incorporates approximately five additional acres for a potential hotel development adjacent to the indoor soccer and basketball facility.

What happened: Todd Burtron, the mayor’s chief of staff, introduced the 2016 budget to the council.

Why it matters: The budget proposes an approximately $1.4 million increase in the 2015 approved budget, at $34,100,588. Burtron said increases are projected in utilities, property insurance, fire and economic and community development costs. A public hearing for the budget will be held at the Sept. 28 meeting, and the council will vote on the budget on Oct. 12.

Why it matters: The establishment of an economic revitalization area is the first step the city must take in order to, in the future, procedurally approve tax abatements for new developments. Matt Skelton, the city’s economic and community development director, said the city has looked at these areas as they are expected to draw strong development interest in the future.

What happened: An amendment to the Chatham Hills PUD was introduced to the council.

Council approves ordinance amendments, resolutions

What happened: The council unanimously approved a resolution to establish an economic revitalization area for the west side of South Park Drive.

Why it matters: The amendment would incorporate four small areas south of 206th Street and east of the Monon Trail into the PUD. What happened: An amendment to the Bridgewater PUD was introduced to the council.

Why it matters: The amendment would incorporate 12 acres on the southwest corner of 151st Street and Gray Road, allowing apartment use on all floors of development for a total of 66 luxury units in six, two-story buildings. The Westfield Advisory Plan Commission will hold a public hearing for the amendment at their Oct. 5 meeting. The city council will vote on the item at their Nov. 9 meeting.

What happened: The council unanimously approved a 10-year, real property tax abatement at 17001 Oak Ridge Road.

Why it matters: A tax abatement on the property is hoped to entice tenants to move or start their business in Westfield at the future mid-size distribution building that could house one to six tenants on the property.

Tax deductions for the property will begin at 100 percent in the first year, decreasing 10 percent each year for 10 years.

116th and Pennsylvania closures begin news@currentinwestfield.com Beginning on Sept. 21, INDOT has closed the intersection at 116th Street and Pennsylvania Street to construct a roads roundabout.

The closure is expected to last approximately 60 days.

While the intersection is closed, access to and from 116th Street east of U.S. 31 will also be closed.

Before the intersection’s closure, road crews opened the 111th Street bridge over U.S. 31. Both east and west access will be available at 111th Street and 126th Street and Carmel Drive.

Direct access to and from U.S. 31 in Carmel will remain available at: • I-465 • 106th Street • 116th Street (west of U.S. 31) • Old Meridian Street (northbound offramp access) • 131st / Main Street • 136th Street A detour route will be clear via signage and will include 106th Street, College Avenue and Old Meridian Street.

Team raises record amount

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com In its seventh year, the Westfield men’s soccer team’s annual Shamrock Charity Challenge set a record, raising fundraiser $20,000 for Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.

The charity soccer tournament included two teams from Westfield High School, along with teams from North Central, Carmel and Cardinal Ritter high schools. Three high

schools from Ohio also participated.

“Our motto this year was Many Teams, One Cause,” said Lynn Eisberg, a parent who helps organize the charity tournament. “A special tradition our senior players have is to visit the Children’s Hospital the Friday of the tournament.

This is a very heartwarming event as boys from three teams took gifts for the children.”

Since its inception, the charity tournament has raised approximately $85,000 for the hospital.

Local artist Hopkins’ work on display at juried show

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Westfield artist Al Hopkins took art in high school, but that was it for his formal training.

“Other than that I just had blueArt collar jobs all through life and painted on the side,” said 55-year-old Hopkins, who works at FedEx Ground. “I couldn’t let the mortgage rest on [being an artist].”

Hopkins’ painting has been accepted into the Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional Juried Exhibition of Traditional Oils, a juried art show in Indianapolis covering multiple states and Canadian provinces.

His entry is a 6-inch by 9-inch oil painting on board titled, “Limes and Lemons.”

“I was just lucky I was in Indiana, so it will

be easy for me to go to the show and drop off my painting,” he said.

The focus in the jurying process will be to select paintings that display the highest quality in draftsmanship, color, and composition, emphasizing a diversity in representational style and subject matter. Awards will total $11,500, including a $4,000 Best In Show award.

Hopkins is one of just seven artists from Indiana selected into the show.

“This is the first attempt to get in, and I got in,” he said. “I saw a show I think in 1994, and I saw an Indiana artist named Frederik Ebbesen Grue (who died in 1995). He did similar work, and I was struck by it. It set me off in a direction of doing traditional still life in a very realistic style.”

Hopkins joined his first art association in 1993. By 1995, Hopkins’ painting was selected for Hoosier Salon’s annual juried show.

“I’ve been in show twice over the years,” he said.

Prior to this recent painting, he had taken a 10-year break from painting because of family commitments.

“My last painting before that was in 2005 for Indiana Heritage Arts exhibit in Nashville (Ind.),” he said.

The Eckert & Ross Fine Art Gallery will host an opening reception of the exhibit on from 5 to 8:30 p.m., Nov. 6. Awards will be announced at 7 p.m. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Development company aims to build family entertainment center, apartments

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com Westfield often boasts the number of trails that run through the city, and as popularity and use of trails increase, development near them will follow. cover story Announced in August when it came before the city council, two major projects, proposed by EdgeRock Development, could play right into what the future of Westfield will look like.

The projects would sit at the Monon and the Midland Trace trails, on the east side of Oak Ridge Road and just south of Ind. 32. This includes a family entertainment center, to open by the holiday season of 2016 on the west side of the Monon, and apartments, to open by 2017 or early 2018, west of the family entertainment center.

Project manager Birch Dalton and co-developer David Beauregard said it was important to begin looking at developing the 13.75 acres as trails continue to grow.

“The opportunity to develop on the two trails is unique and will be important to get it developed and established prior to extending the Monon over Ind. 32,” Dalton said.

Financially, Dalton and Beauregard said the Dalton two projects would kick start the development and growth of the Ind. 32 corridor through Westfield.

“The two planned projects will help spur other development on the frontage of U.S. 31. Also, with two planned hotels on the same side of Ind. 32, we see this as a great opportunity to develop from U.S. 31 to Oak Ridge (Road),” Dalton said. “First it will impact the assessed value for the community, which immediately helps all taxpayers, our great schools, and the city finances.”

Dalton said the project as a whole will be a great opportunity to enjoy the city’s trails by biking, running, walking and strolling with the family to a unique entertainment location, but also is a chance to live in a dynamic location for both busy and restful lifestyles.

Family entertainment center The proposed two-story, 60,000-square-foot family entertainment center, or FEC, could serve as a one-stop shop for resident and visiting families looking for fun, whether it’s in between tournament games at Grand Park (a five-minute drive away) or weekend fun.

“The first floor will contain a state-of-the-art multi-level laser tag arena, a cybersports court, arcade with both sports simulators and games for all ages, a sports bar and grille with numerous television screens for viewing sporting events, bowling and an outdoor patio,” Beauregard said. “The outdoor patio will be adjacent to the Monon to provide walk up dining for the Monon users.”

Beauregard said the second floor of the facility would feature rentable meeting rooms, a craft beer bar with food service, a business incubator, and an e-game lounge.

Approximately half of the second floor would be devoted to an outdoor deck and mezzanine overlooking the Monon.

“We have had very high interest in the FEC from many local

residents as there is no place to go right now for such fun and family time,” Dalton said.

“Regarding the impact on the community…There is absolutely no entertainment for these athletes (from Grand Park) and their families between games or in the evening,” Beauregard said. “We will provide that entertainment and food service venue.”

Beauregard said they understand the importance of good nutrition, too. Athletes will have menus designed especially for them, “something healthy beyond just hamburgers and hotdogs.”

“Although this will be a great venue for the residents of Westfield, we anticipate the demographic to reach out to Anderson, Kokomo and Zionsville as well as drawing activity from Carmel and Indianapolis,” Beauregard said.

Living space The second phase of building, apartments, hopes to shy away from traditional apartment complex designs common to the area and focus on a more urban design of one large building with several stories.

“The multi-level lifestyle building will cater to both single and young couples…It will have the amenities to support an active life style,” Dalton said.

A maximum of 300 units will be built. The all-in-one building would feature ground-level parking for singles, young couples and active empty nesters who would rent either studio, onebedroom or small two-bedroom apartments.

Amenities could include a pool, dog park, fitness and business centers, grilling cabana, bicycle storage, and of course, trail access.

The panel has approved rezoning of land for the development of a hotel near the planned controversial indoor soccer and basketball facility, and that brought the noise once more. Our take: Grand Park, clearly a city facility, needs to be self-sustaining, and if revenue generated by a hotel on the grounds helps to make that happen, then good for the city. On the other hand, if Grand Park truly is a city amenity, make it available to residents. If not, privatize it for big dollars.

Friendly or foolish

“Hello, Terry. I know it has been a while since we’ve talked; but, I’m surprised that you’ve not responded to my emails.” So went a message among the many stuffing my inbox. The problem is that I couldn’t remember a previous message – or for that matter, recall the person who sent it to me. Happily, my digital recall is increasingly more reliable than my physiological one.

With a few quick keystrokes, I was able to search the last decade or so of messages, contacts and appointments. There was no indication of any previous interaction.

Yet in a connected world, we meet so many people that I responded to the note begging forgiveness for my poor memory and asking to be reacquainted with the sender. Much as could be expected, I suppose, the exchange only led to a confirmation that the message was a cold call. In fact, there had not been an antecedent nor had I ever interacted with the supposed long-lost-friend who’d sent it.

The email originated from a far-off busi-

ness, one can assume, paid to arrange meetings for a payroll service aspiring to pitch their wares. Its familiar tone and intentionally deceptive admonishment effectively elicited a response. While one might be impressed by the success of the ruse, it led to my blocking any future solicitations from both the sender and the company hoping to connect. Perhaps the scorn originated in embarrassment for being susceptible but the exchange seemed to push past puffery into downright dishonesty.

As the World Wide Web has made our personal lives increasingly public, marketers and charlatans have ever more effective tools to enter our heads – and our wallets. In the modern age, what is the line between friendly and foolish? Thanks to the internet, when the barbarians arrive they be calling us by our first names.

Husbands are adorable, aren’t they? How they can love their families so much that anything that takes them away humor is cause for great suffering?

Take my Doo, for example.

Doo’s work requires him to travel periodically. Over summer, his absence is noticeable but tolerable. I’m still single parenting four children, but I don’t have to worry about homework or ensuring they shower. When trips occur smack dab in the middle of school week, however, it’s another story.

Last week was just such a week. In addition to teaching and doing basic mom stuff, I bore the full brunt of carpooling, disciplining, grade patrolling and calendar managing.

Suffice it to say, I was done, physically and mentally, by the time Doo returned.

But here’s the precious part. He truly believes his week was harder! That sleeping in a hotel room and having to eat alone in a restaurant is far worse than being a single parent. That being responsible for only one person . . . himself . . . is more taxing than making sure four short people are clothed and fed and mostly clean twenty-four seven.

His week was miserable not because of business but because he wasn’t with us. How cute is that?

Me? I could never miss my family that much. I would literally sacrifice our cat to have four nights of uninterrupted sleep in a legit bed that someone else has made.

I’d throw in the dog to enjoy just one quiet dinner, no dishes attached, with only a good book for company. Call me a glutton for punishment, but I’d even donate my first-born for six hours of driving, each way, if I could listen to whatever songs I fancy.

Doo doesn’t get it, and consequently, is unable to validate my anxiety, exhaustion and jealousy. I come off as a selfish brat who doesn’t appreciate her husband’s sacrifices.

In reality, though, I simply long for a break from routine (and to sample faux crab salad in an Applebee’s parking lot). But then, no one has ever called me “adorable” so I’ll just leave that to Doo. Peace out.

Wilson to sing career retrospective with ATI Trio

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Patricia Wilson, who has performed with the likes of Gene Kelly, Jackie Gleason and Bob Fosse, figured she had retired when she moved to Carmel five years ago.

Not so fast. music Wilson, 86, will perform in “Blame it on My Youth” with the Actors Theatre of Indiana Trio of Don Farrell, Judy Fitzgerald and Cynthia Collins at The Warehouse, 254 1st Ave. SW, Carmel at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 9-10.

“I hate to say it but I haven’t sung in about 20 years,” Wilson said. “I’m going to have to apologize for my singing I’m afraid.

I’ve been working on it, but how’s the song go ‘The old gray mare ain’t what she used to be.’ I think Don, Judy and Cindy will sing a lot and I’ll just do a couple or three songs from the eras that I was in.”

Wilson said she is looking forward to working with the dedicated ATI Trio, who she describes as kids.

“I hope I don’t let them down,” Wilson said. “It’s probably going to be my swan song.”

For Farrell, it will be a treat to be alongside Wilson.

“I can say personally, as well as professionally, that it will be a true privilege to share the stage with one who has seen and experienced it all,” Farrell said. “From her strong performing heritage that blossomed into being a respected actress during Broadway’s Golden Age through Hollywood and everything in between, Ms. Wilson is a true gem who enchants you with her charm, grace, and loveliness with exciting stories only she can tell — because she lived it!”

Collins is proud to call Wilson a friend as well.

“Pat Wilson is one of the remaining ‘troopers’ in our business,” Collins said. “Thank God she is still around to share her stories and talent with us. Her razor-sharp wit and humble persona make it a pleasure to work with her.”

Wilson got her first break starring in “Fiorello!,” as the wile of New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, played by Tom Bosley, on Broadway in 1959.

Wilson was a favorite of Richard Rodgers and performed as Nellie Flatbush eight times in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “South Pacific.”

“I met them (Rodgers and Hammerstein) quite early in my New York career,” Wilson said. “I did one of their shows called “Pipe Dream” which was less than their best success. After that they took over my career.”

Her many TV credits included “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “Happy Days,” and “The Jackie Gleason Show: American Scene Magazine.” She also acted in movies, “A League of Their Own” and “The Nutty Professor.”

Wilson originally moved to Carmel to live near her daughter and three children. That daughter has since moved to Min-

nesota, but Wilson plans to stay in Carmel. She has another daughter with two children in California.

“I love Carmel,” Wilson said.

Wilson’s autobiography “Yesterday’s Mashed Potatoes: The Fabulous Life of a Happy Has-Been” was published in 2009.

The Carmel International Arts Festival has come a long way since its beginning nearly two decades ago on performances the City Square, and the festival’s new president is hoping to continue building on that strong foundation at this year’s event.

More than 130 juried artists will display their work beginning at 10 a.m. Sept. 26 and Sept. 27 during the 18th annual festival. The family-friendly event takes place in the Carmel Arts and Design District, where guests can walk the streets to enjoy art, live performances and food.

Dawn Fraley, owner of The Great Frame Up, has taken over as president of the festival after previously serving as chairperson of the artists. Rosemary Waters, who had served as Fraley president of the festival since it started in 1998, is now the executive director.

Fraley, a resident of Westfield, has brought about several changes, including a completely online artist application.

Fraley feels lucky to be a part of an already popular festival and hopes her changes build upon its past success.

“All in all I’ve just tried to get the festival running more like a business,” she said. “It’s a fantastic festival that Rosemary Waters has nourished for years. I just wanted to enhance what she’s built and make it stronger, better, bigger.”

We’re sure the younger generation won’t believe this, but once upon a time, all college and pro games started at 1 p.m. Tailgating was in its infancy then and basically consisted of only a sandwich, side and cold drink. There was no need to vary menus.

Today however, early games put tailgaters at the stadium in the early morning. Now they need a breakfast type pre-game menu. We’ve served everything from eggs and bacon, pancakes and sausage, to breakfast casseroles, but heating and cooking with multiple burners and an oven gets pretty tough for the casual tailgater.

Couldn’t there be something easy to serve and eat that brings out gasps of pleasure like “”Oh my!” and “Wow, this is good!”

Here’s a simple breakfast treat that replaces the breakfast casserole. It can be made the day before and reheated at the game and will bring raves from those that enjoy your tailgate.

Amazing Breakfast Muffins Ingredients: 4 cups shredded potatoes or hash browns, thawed, 1 small onion diced, 4 tablespoons butter, melted, 1/8 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon pepper, 12 links Pre-cooked JOHNSONVILLE® Original Breakfast Sausage, 6 eggs, lightly beaten, 1 cups (4 ounces) Shredded Cheddar cheese, 1 cups (4 ounces) Shredded Colby Jack cheese, 2 oz. cream cheese cut into 12 cubes, 1/4 cup chopped red bell pepper, Chives or green onion to garnish Directions: Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees.

Prepare sausage according to package instructions, cool, and cut each link into 6 pieces and set aside. In a bowl mix/combine potatoes, onion, butter, salt and pepper; divide evenly into 12 greased muffin cups pressing mixture onto sides

and bottom of muffin cups. Bake at 400°F for 14 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove muffin tin from the oven and divide sausage pieces into muffin cups. Place 1/12 of the cream cheese into each muffin cup atop the sausage slices. In a bowl, combine eggs, cheese and bell pepper.

Spoon mixture evenly into muffin cups Sprinkle the tops with chives or green onions. Return tin to the oven and bake 13-15 minutes or until set.

Cool these muffins and refrigerate overnight.

On game day heat them on your covered grill or tailgate oven on a sheet of foil. Serve with French’s Dijon mustard with Chardonnay as a dipping sauce.

Total Time: Approx. 2 hours Original recipe makes 10 servings Ingredients: 1 packet instant yeast, 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, 1/2 cup vegan butter, divided, 1/4 tsp salt, 3 cups all-purpose flour, 1/2 Tbsp cinnamon, 1/4 cup + 1 Tbsp sugar, divided Directions: In a large sauce pan, heat the almond milk and 3 Tbsp vegan butter until warm and melted, never reaching boiling. Remove from heat and let cool to 110 degrees. Transfer mixture to a large mixing bowl and sprinkle on yeast. Let activate for 10 minutes, then add 1 Tbsp sugar and the salt and stir. Next, add in flour 1/2 cup at a time, stirring as you go. When thick, transfer to a lightly floured surface and knead for one minute and form it into a ball. Cover with plastic wrap and set in a warm place to rise for about 1 hour. After it rises, roll out the dough into a thin rectangle and brush with 3 Tbsp melted vegan butter, 1/4 cup sugar and 1/2 Tbsp cinnamon. Roll dough and cut into 2 inch sections.

Position slices in a well-buttered 8x8 square pan and brush with remaining 2 Tbsp vegan butter. Cover with plastic wrap. Set on top of the oven to let rise again while you preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Once the oven is hot, bake rolls for 25-30 minutes or until slightly golden brown. Let cool for a few minutes and then serve immediately. Icing optional.

Keeping up with design trends can be great fun. But getting too wrapped up in the newest looks can sometimes leave your home looking dated after the trends have indoor living changed.

To create a really dynamic look in your home, try and visualize the space in terms of layers.

The first layer is made up of the building blocks of the room, and includes elements like flooring or cabinetry. Consider items in the first layer “permanent” because they require a good deal of effort to replace. Keep in mind that simplicity tends to stand the test of time. For this reason, you will want to select neutral styles for these permanent pieces because you know they will have to last.

Each layer after the first will include items that are less permanent, and therefore more replaceable. Dress up your neutral hardwood floor design with a patterned area rug. Or bring color into the room by hanging wall art. It’s in the top layers where you can have fun, great creative and express your

personal style.

When it comes to implementing trends in your home, try to remember that less is more.

Colors especially seem to come in and out of style quickly, which makes it a little difficult to select a timeless look that features a lot of color. First of all, try to choose a color scheme that features a fewer number of colors. I suggest using neutral hues such as grays, beiges and whites for the major features of the room (walls, furniture, floors, etc.), and then accenting the room with small, colorful decorations.

It’s always exciting to try new things and try out new trends in your home.

The key to choosing timeless style is not going overboard with placing trends in every room of your house.

Mannequin or manikin?

I write all the time about French, German, Latin and Greek influences on the English language, but I believe grammar guy this week’s column will mark a first for the Grammar Guy: A word of Dutch origin.

Now, we’ve gotten plenty of great words from the Dutch – like “furlough” and “galoot” – but this week we’re talking about “manikin.”

If the spelling looks strange, know that you aren’t alone.

The word actually came to our language twice: Once, as “manikin,” from Dutch; and again as “mannequin,” from French (although, really even the French word comes from the original Dutch word, mannekijn).

Both words have kept very similar meanings in English. The Dutch “manikin” is used primarily to refer to a jointed model of the human body, as might be used in anatomy or by an artist. The most common application of “manikin” you probably haven’t been using? A CPR manikin.

The French version, “mannequin,” is probably the definition you’re more familiar with: a dummy used to display clothes in a store window. It’s also the name of a questionable rom-com from the ‘80s starring Kim Cattrall and Andrew McCarthy, but that’s neither here nor there.

The practical question, of course, is, “Are they interchangeable?” The answer here is “no.” For the sort of anatomical model you’d see in a medical setting or biology classroom, the correct choice is “manikin.” For dummies used to hawk the latest fashions, stick with “mannequin.”

My gut feeling is you could probably get away with only using “mannequin” without being questioned, but, then again, you also probably don’t read this column because you like avoiding grammatical technicalities.

Hemingway’s Cojimar

Americans traveling to Havana often seek locations identified with Ernest Hemingway, who lived in Cuba off and on travel during the 1940s and 1950s. One of the most popular of those spots is Cojimar, a small fishing village east of Havana that became the setting for one of Hemingway’s best-known books.

In 1951, Hemingway began writing a short novel drawing on the colorful stories and people he encountered while fishing and drinking in and around Cojimar, where he berthed Pilar, his boat. Published in 1952, The Old Man and the Sea won the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Today, visitors to Cojimar can eat and drink in La Terraza de Cojimar, the seaside bar Hemingway dubbed “The Terrace” in his novel.

One of its pictures of Hemingway shows him with a young Fidel Castro, who won Hemingway’s fishing competition in 1960, the only time the two ever met. Another shows Gregorio Fuentes, the long-time captain of Pilar, who controversially claimed until he died in 2002 at age 104 that he was the inspiration for Santiago, the novel’s main character, and charged Cojimar visitors to talk to him.

Six Ionic columns supporting a stone ring surround a short bust of Hemingway, with a plaque saying: “In loving memory from the people of Cojimar to the Immortal Author of the Old Man and the Sea.” The bust was reportedly cast from boat fittings donated by local fisherman grateful that Hemingway had called the world’s attention to their struggles but unable to support the project financially.
