Tax increase proposed to fund, improve public safety in county

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com City and town councils across Hamilton County soon will vote on whether to approve a .1 percent increase to the 1 perPOLITICS cent local income tax to fund and improve the county’s 911 communications center.

The town council of Arcadia, a town of 1,600 north of Cicero, recently voted in favor of the tax, triggering a process that requires it to be voted on by all Hamilton County city and town councils. To go into effect, councils representing more than half of the county’s population must approve the tax increase. That means if approved by Carmel and Fishers, whose populations comprise nearly 60 percent of the county, the tax would be approved.

The proposed tax could more evenly spread the cost of funding the 911 communications center across all county residents. Currently, Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield combine to pay more than $5 million to run the center, with a statewide user fee charged to phone users covering $3.6 million. The county, small towns and townships are responsible for less than $1 million.

Previously, the county’s four largest cities helped subsidize the service for the small towns, but Hamilton County Commissioner Christine Altman said officials from the large cities decided they no longer wanted to absorb those costs.

Now, Hamilton County’s small towns are responsible to jointly contribute $500,000 annually, an amount determined based on the number of calls to an area. The county agreed to phase in the amount they owe, with $50,000 due in 2019 and the amount increasing by 10 percent each year until they are paying the full amount. In the meantime, the county is funding the difference.

But even with only 10 percent of the full cost due this year, the small towns are having a difficult time finding the funds, Altman said, partially because of tax caps. And she doesn’t expect it to get any easier as their bill grows.

“Is it fair for the county to supplement the

north versus the south (part of the county)?”

Altman said. “We didn’t want to get into that, so we had to come up with a plan where everybody felt comfortable and everybody was paying their fair share.”

The 911 communications center, housed in the basement of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, handles more than 300,000 calls each year.

Rick McKinney, an at-large member of the Hamilton County Council, which handles the county’s finances, said the tax increase isn’t necessary.

“We haven’t had a problem for the first five or six years (of consolidation), so we’re fixing a half-a-million-dollar problem with a $17 million tax increase,” he said. “It’s sort of like using a sledgehammer to kill a fly.”

If the tax is approved, municipalities no longer will be required to pay a service fee to use the 911 dispatch center.

The tax is expected to raise approximately $16 million annually for the county, which is $5 million more than its current budget, another concern for McKinney.

“There is no need right now for that extra money,” he said. “It will just go into an account and wait until the mayors and commissioner (who comprise the county’s 911 communications operations board) decide they need to spend it on something.”

Altman, who serves on the 911 communications operations board, and other county officials have proposed using some of the additional funds to pay for a new, freestanding 911 dispatch center.

Jeff Schemmer, Hamilton County public safety communications executive director, said his department’s 90 employees are “stuck in cracks and crevices” in an area they’ve outgrown. A potential location for a new dispatch center has not been determined.

Schemmer said funds from the tax would also allow his department to upgrade technology and properly maintain equipment.

If approved, the tax would go into effect Jan. 1, 2020.

The Westfield City Council was set to hold a public hearing on the tax Sept. 9. Fishers is scheduled to hold one Sept. 16.

State treasurer joins 5th District race

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com State Treasurer Kelly Mitchell has joined the race to replace U.S. Rep. Susan Brooks in ELECTION Congress.

Mitchell, a Republican from Indianapolis, filed paperwork Aug. 27 to officially become a candidate for Indiana’s 5th District, which includes all or part of HamilMitchell ton, Boone, Marion, Blackford, Grant, Howard, Madison and Tipton counties.

Mitchell served as a Cass County commissioner and worked as the director of TrustINdiana before becoming treasurer. She has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Valparaiso University and advanced degrees from IUPUI and the U.S. Army War College.

Brooks announced earlier this year that she would resign from Congress at the end of her term. Other candidates in the Republican primary are Steve Braun, a Zionsville businessman and brother of U.S. Sen. Mike Braun; Noblesville resident Micah Beckwith, a pastor at Northview Church; and Danny Niederberger, a fund accountant who lives in Indianapolis.

On the Democratic side, candidates in the race include Dee Thornton, a Carmel resident and businesswoman; Christina Hale, an Indianapolis resident and former state representative; and Jennifer Christie, an Indianapolis resident and scientist.

Residents sound off on downtown Union Square proposal

Union Square is proposed on approximately 4 acres at the southwest quadrant of Union Street and Ind. 32. The project is expected to include office, retail, restaurants and a multi-family component. Old Town Companies CEO Justin Moffett gave a presentation and said the multi-family component is expected to be apartments, but that condominiums might be considered.

“Ultimately, we believe we needed a catalyst event such as Grand Junction Park and Plaza to move this project forward,” Moffett said. “We are here to talk about the (planned unit development) ordinance, which is the first step in a multi-step process.”

Moffett said if the project moves forward, he expects multi-family tenants to predominantly be 55 and older.

Public reaction to the project was mixed.

Marlene Pedigo, a pastor at Eagle Creek Friends Church, said she wants the APC to consider the proximity to the Westfield Washington Schools campus before voting.

“I am concerned about the dense apartment buildings being close to the school campuses,” she said. “Who are the residents who might be close to the campuses? I would like to see family friendly business or low-density housing like (what’s) currently

there, just because of the interest of the children.”

Marla Ailor referenced a petition, with several hundred signatures, stating the city is rushing approval.

“Mr. Moffett’s goals include authenticity for this community, and I believe him, but I also believe the 276 people that signed a petition believing there’s a rush to gain approval for this PUD,” she said.

Mic Mead said the project is exactly what

the Grand Junction Task Group wanted when it envisioned Westfield’s downtown.

“The proposal in front of you is right in line with what was called for while saving historic buildings,” he said. “I submit no developer/builder could establish a downtown like Old Town.”

Ronald Moore also spoke in favor of the project.

“We look down the road 20 years, and when (our grandkids) get out of school and graduate, where do I want them to live? I want them to live right here in Westfield,” Moore said. “I want Westfield to be able to provide the kind of opportunities for them to have this PUD, and this project is headed in that direction.”

APC member Scott Willis voiced concerns about density, and APC member Chris Woodard asked Moffett how many people he expected to live in the apartments. Moffett said he estimates 1.5 people per unit, equaling between 220 or 270 people.

APC member Steve Hoover said he has participated in the Grand Junction Task Group for 12 years and the proposal is exactly what was envisioned.

COMMUNITY DISPATCHES School supply drive — David Weekley Homes, the nation’s largest privately-held builder, conducted its fifth annual, companywide School Supplies Drive in 18 cities across the nation. In Indianapolis, school supplies were collected for Teachers’ Treasures, which obtains and distributes school supplies to teachers in Marion County and surrounding school districts to provide to students in need. Lawmakers searching for interns — Hamilton County lawmakers are encouraging college students and recent graduates to apply for the Indiana House Republican Internship Program, which takes place during the 2020 legislative session at the Statehouse in Indianapolis. Snedeker to remain on ballot in race for city council seat

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com On Sept. 3, the Hamilton County Election Board held a public hearing for a complaint filed by POLITICS Westfield City Council District 5 Republican candidate Mike Johns against District 5 independent candidate Kate Healey Snedeker.

Snedeker Johns was seeking to have her removed from the ballot. The board voted 3-0 against Johns’ complaint.

Johns lodged several complaints against Snedeker, including name discrepancies on her candidate filing forms, omission of employment with Westfield Washington Schools and the City of Westfield and the validity of several signatures on Snedeker’s petition.

Johns called himself a rules follower, which is why he said he was asking the election board to remove Snedeker’s name from the ballot.

“In my opinion, the election process is something near and dear to all of us, it’s what sets our country aside from others,” Johns said. “Election rules exist for a reason and should be followed, and I don’t take filing to run for office very lightly.”

Johns said he doesn’t know why Snedeker added the name “Healey” to her candidacy form, but speculated it was so her name would appear first alphabetically on the ballot.

David Brooks, an attorney representing Snedeker, disputed the claim.

“You impugn my client’s character by saying she’s trying to confuse the voting public in an attempt to change her alphabetical placement on the ballot,” Brooks said.

“Earlier, you said you don’t know if that’s the case, and it’s not the case. In a general election, the Republican gets one spot and the independent gets another spot, but you accuse my client of deliberately attempting to confuse people to achieve a goal.”

In regard to Snedeker’s employment listings, board member Greg Purvis asked her if her employment with WWS and the City of

Westfield equaled more than 33 percent of her annual salary. Statute states if a candidate is employed at a job that pays less than 33 percent annual salary, it doesn’t have to be listed on the form. Snedeker said more than 66 percent of her salary comes from her company, Kate Snedeker Communications, which is why she didn’t list WWS and the City of Westfield on the forms.

“We’ve been over your Johns complaint in a general sense, but it would be fair to say the three areas you are concerned about are the use of different names, omission on some forms and a variety of irregularities on the petition form,” Brooks said. “Based on this, you are asking the election board to remove her from the ballot. Is there a Democrat on the ballot? So, to be clear, you want to ask this board to declare you a winner today so you don’t have to actually win a general election, is that right? You certainly won’t have any opposition if the board removes her.

Would you be the winner of the election if Kate Healey (Snedeker) is off the ballot?”

“Yes,” Johns said. “But that’s not the reason.”

The board also read a statute that states a candidate may use any legal given name, maiden name, nickname, etc. when filing forms. Snedeker’s maiden name is Healey.

Two Westfield citizens, Linda Naas and Barbara Simonson, spoke at the hearing.

“I just think it’s important if someone is running for office they know how to fill out the forms properly,” Simonson said. “I don’t know if it’s a mistake or trying to jockey around things, but if you cannot fill out the forms, how are you expected to represent the citizens of your city and county?”

During the board’s pre-vote discussion, Hamilton County Clerk Kathy Williams said she wouldn’t support removing Snedeker from the ballot.

Jan’s Village Pizza, Sundown Gardens vie for business award

Sundown Gardens and Jan’s EVENT Village Pizza are the two finalists for Business of the Year.

The winner will be decided by a vote on the Westfield Chamber of Commerce website, westfield-chamber.org, and the winner

will be announced at the Lantern Awards, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at The Palomino Ballroom in Zionsville.

The owners of Sundown Gardens are Brian and Mary Kirchner. Jan’s Village Pizza is owned by Kim Kercheval “Both were nominated by community or board members, but for different reasons,” Westfield Chamber of Commerce interim President Nick Verhoff said. “Jan’s has been a staple of our downtown for many years and Sundown Gardens (was nominated) for

investing in the Westfield community after leaving Carmel.”

The event starts with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m.

Matt Roush will provide music entertainment. The awards begin at 8:15 p.m.

Melissa Estabrook, events director for the Westfield Chamber, said it is the organization’s largest event of the year.

Individual tickets are $60 and a corporate table of eight is $600.

Homecoming parade set

By Renee Larr news@currentinwestfield.com The Westfield High School Homecoming Parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 26. It starts at Westfield Intermediate EVENT school, winds around Westfield Middle School and ends in the WHS parking lot.

This year’s theme is “Sweet Victory.”

“Each year we choose a theme, so the floats can all decorate within that theme,” said Mitzi Eichenberger, parade chairperson.

“This year, they’ll decorate anything related to sweets, so they can do candy, doughnuts, honey or whatever is sweet to them.”

There are approximately 55 entries or groups represented.

“If we have a winning team from the season before, they’ll be invited to be in the parade,” Eichenberger said. “We will also have the cheerleaders, color guard and each high school club. Also, every school in the district is represented with a float.”

The groups have worked on their floats since the start of the school year.

“They start brainstorming and coming up with ideas early on,” Eichenberger said.

money for them. A lot of these high school clubs don’t have a lot of money on-hand, so it takes some time.”

Local celebrities also will attend.

“Dave Smiley from the ‘Smiley Morning Show’ is our grand marshal,” Eichenberger said. “Last year, Blue from the Indianapolis Colts was our mascot. He had so much fun he’s coming back this year.”

The parade is open to the public.

“It’s a family friendly event that everyone can enjoy,” Eichenberger said. “Even people who don’t have kids or grandkids in the school system can come out and enjoy the parade.”

Boots and Bling to benefit WYAP

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com The Westfield Youth Assistance Program board didn’t see a need for a black-tie event.

EVENT “We want people to be comfortable and casual and have fun,” said Alison Van Natta, event committee chair. “People have been to enough stuffy charity events. We want it to be something relaxed and fun.”

The second Boots and Bling fundraiser is from 7 to 11 p.m. Sept. 21 at Van Natta’s Sur Real Farms, 181 W. 161st St. in Westfield.

Van Natta has been on the WYAP board for more than five years. WYAP was formed in 2009 to serve as an early intervention advocate for youth ages 3 to 17 who are facing challenging life circumstances The casual attire event is centered on a reverse raffle.

“There are 100 people entered in the raffle, so it’s a relatively small event,” Van

Natta said. “Everyone is assigned a number, and you eliminate numbers throughout the evening. We then get down to the top 10.

We have giveaway prizes for everyone eliminated from that point, and then we have a $5,000 grand prize.”

Van Natta said several restaurants donate gift cards.

There will be a live auction, a disc jockey and a dance floor. There will be an open bar and catering by Keltie Domina.

“The DJ has done a lot of these reverse raffles, so he is a huge help with the night,” Van Natta said.

Van Natta said last year’s initial Boots and Bling raised nearly $20,000, after expenses, for WYAP. “Through incredibly generous donations, we were able to donate a high percentage of proceeds back to the program,” Van Natta said.

Holcomb hopes to reduce vaping

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb and State Health Commissioner Kris Box used Fishers High School and members of the HEALTH student body as a backdrop for their Aug. 29 announcement of a three-pronged strategy to reduce vaping.

“It’s the perfect venue and perfect audience to connect with in the coming months,” Holcomb said.

The Indiana Youth Tobacco Survey found vaping has increased 387 percent among high school students and 358 percent among middle school students since 2012.

Between 2016 and 2018, 35,000 more Indiana students used e-cigarettes.

“We know we have our work cut out for us because vaping has continued to grow and cause harm,” Holcomb said. “Even the surgeon general, especially because it involves so many of our younger folks, has called it an epidemic.”

In partnership with the Indiana Dept. of Education, Box said the Dept. of Health will be rolling out school-based tools detailing the dangers of vaping.

Secondly, Box said a website, vapefreeindiana.isdh.in.gov., is for parents and educators to learn more to protect state youth from the dangers of vaping. There will be an educational toolkit with information for parents, students and educators.

“We will be training students to serve as ambassadors. It will be there because we know middle school students listen better to high school students and high school students listen to the seniors in high school and those going off to college,” Box said. “A text-to-quit campaign has been launched, texting DITCHJUUL to 889-09 for help. Lastly,

we will build awareness through a youthfocused social media campaign on the dangers of vaping statewide. We’re going to reach you where we know you are, that is on your social media.

“We are attacking this with urgency and significant resources. These products that are billed as kid-friendly are anything but that. One Juul contains as much nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes.”

Holcomb said the three-pronged approach is about getting to every rural, urban and suburban community.

“That’s why it’s important the Dept. of Health and Dept. of Education are collaborating and making sure that parents, educators and students have access,” Holcomb said. “So, it’s awareness and access, making sure no one is left out.”

Box said the state is spending a few million dollars for the media campaign and resources.

‘We have to match what the Juul and e-cigarette people have done, dollar for dollar,” Box said. “We had done such a good job getting the youth using cigarettes down to a minimal number. This has recruited a new generation of smokers.”

Holcomb said he supports Indiana Sen. Todd Young’s proposal to raise the national age to buy tobacco products to 21.

Westfield Washington Schools administration supports the statewide initiative.

“Vaping is a national issue impacting people of all ages, including students. Awareness is the key and we appreciate Gov. Holcomb shining the light on this serious and potentially life-threatening issue,” said Carrie Cason, WWS director of communications and strategic partnerships. “WWS will continue to work with Breathe Easy Hamilton County to educate our community.”

WHS sophomore raises caterpillars, releases butterflies into the wild

By Renee Larr news@currentinwestfield.com Westfield High School sophomore Christian Matthews is trying to make a difference in the world, one COVER STORY monarch butterfly at a time. When Matthews was in first grade, he learned about monarch butterflies and their population decline.

“I was originally inspired by my firstgrade teacher to start raising them,” Matthews said. “So, I took up the torch and have been raising them and releasing them into the wild for the last 10 years.”

Matthews applied the classroom lesson to his personal life.

“I brought caterpillars into the classroom,” said Darcy Kelley, Matthews’ firstgrade teacher. “We searched for milkweed leaves to feed them, and we would just watch them go through their whole process of becoming a butterfly.”

Matthews finds caterpillars in his milkweed garden, raises them until they become monarch butterflies and then releases them.

“Throughout this process, I’ve learned so many things I didn’t know about monarch butterflies, but also about nature,” Matthews said.

Matthews learned the importance of the monarch to the entire ecosystem.

“Monarch butterflies are important pollinators,” he said. “There used to be millions

of them, but since humans came along, the population has been on the decline.”

The monarch butterfly is considered an endangered species because of climate change and food loss. Its primary food source at the caterpillar stage, milkweed plants, are sometimes mistaken for weeds.

“Milkweed is the essential food for monarch caterpillars,” Matthews said. “They will not eat anything else. Many people see a milkweed plant in their garden and end up cutting it away because they don’t know its purpose. Without the main food source for the monarch caterpillars, there won’t be

any butterflies.”

Besides growing milkweed in his garden, Matthews enlisted the help of the City of Westfield to prevent the destruction of milkweed.

“There is an area in Westfield where I liked to pick milkweed, but the city was cutting it down,” Matthews said. “I sent an email to the city asking them to leave it, and they agreed.”

He also supplies monarch caterpillars to the same teacher who fostered his love of the insect.

“It’s touching to me that he wants to stay

in touch and share one of his early elementary-school experiences with my current students,” Kelley said. “He wanted to share that joy with younger kids because it made such an impact on him.”

To save monarchs, education is critical, according to experts.

“What Christian is doing is fantastic,” said Aaron Stump, habitat programs manager for the Indiana Wildlife Federation. “It’s education and outreach that gets people to care about wildlife like this. You have to hook people for them to realize that this species is important. That’s exactly what Christian is doing.”

Another way to help save the species is monarch tagging.

“Monarch Watch is a citizen science project,” Stump said. “That means everyday people run it. In the fall, we go out and net monarch butterflies that are migrating. We try to put a tag on it to report to a database. It helps them sort of keep track of the numbers.”

For Matthews, his love of monarch caterpillars and butterflies could manifest itself into something bigger.

“I’m going to be part of the (WHS) Animal Club this year, and through that, I would like to share my love for monarch butterflies,” Matthews said. “I’m hoping it could grow in popularity enough where I can start my own monarch club.”

LETTER Drivers: Slow down on Union

Know when Commentary by Terry Anker Why does it seem more difficult to accept a loss when we expected a victory? Our team is in the lead for the entire game when, well into the fourth quarter, an interception gives the opponent good field position. Within a few moments they manage to complete a short pass which, with a well-executed field goal, puts them into the lead. With seconds to go, our home team fails to regain its rightful position. We lose that which belonged to us.

Conversely, the fans of the opposition are jubilant. To gain dominion when submission was expected is a sweeter fruit. They celebrate in blind joy that their hard work, prayers and good nature were rewarded with triumph while our team, now taunted as losers, struggles to reconcile what went wrong.

Isn’t much of life the same? Our anticipations, when dashed, are more bitter than any equivalent defeat. For some, the fear generated is highly motivating – more hours spent in preparation and planning.

For others, the fear generated leads to premature retreat – there is no reason to try if loss is inevitable.

If we don’t consider that we can, can we? Still, if we imagine that we can and we do not, is the emotional harm greater? Is the key to happy equilibrium to know the limits of our rational expectation, work to overcome those boundaries and remain prepared for failure while fully believing in our capacity to succeed?

Much success in business and life comes from the ability to stand tall between these forces. Musician Kenny Rogers posited that happiness is found in knowing when to hold them, knowing when to fold them, knowing when to walk away and knowing when to run. He may be correct.

One flew back to the cuckoo’s nest Commentary by Danielle Wilson My almost empty-nest euphoria lasted less than a week, friends. Our oldest decided after four days of college living, he needed to come home. What HUMOR the what?

Of course, within minutes of his inauspicious arrival, his main-floor bedroom looked like a Hurricane Dorian victim and our once-stocked pantry held nothing but an expired can of water chestnuts and the wrapper of a mac-n-cheese box. The clever lad also successfully coerced his dad, Doo, into taking him to dinner, where apparently he talked non-stop for 45 minutes while inhaling an order of breadsticks and a large deep-dish.

Luckily, I evaded his initial onslaught as I was busy chauffeuring our youngest to her peeps, but alas, parenting quicksand trapped me as soon as I returned. In a brilliant maneuver reminiscent of Red October submarine trickery, Doo offloaded our chatty

Cathy onto me as he made a beeline for significantly quieter garage waters.

I was able to appear genuinely engaged for a solid half-hour, nodding as he described his classes and asking clarifying questions about his roommate situation. But it was Friday night, I was exhausted from a long week of teaching and all I really wanted was an introvert moment with my phone to stalk Facebook and play Words.

After another 15 minutes, I couldn’t restrain my eyeballs from rolling any longer. I strategically suggested a quick episode of his beloved “The League” and shimmied off the couch toward the stairs.

Call me a bad mother. Call me a coward. I call it self-care. I want my empty nest back!

Standing by the letter Editor, In response to two letters in Current in Westfield, I apologize for my goof. I misinterpreted Jennifer Christie’s website and filing and thought she was a Republican. She is a Democrat running for our 5th District congressional seat and has every right to express her thoughts.

But I stand by the rest of my letter on the fallacies of global climate change. The 97 percent issue was debunked years ago, and I remind my critics that I study peer-reviewed journals regularly. CO2 does not cause climate change and the Atlantic cooling cycle is in its third year and the sun has reversed from sun flares to sun spots causing a cooling cycle, and the University of Iceland reports its (nation’s) ice is growing.

Science requires peer review and is never settled. “If it’s consensus it is not science.” New research has clearly demonstrated that trees and crops grow bigger and faster when grown in higher CO2.

Frightening people, especially students, to believe climate change leads to disaster is practiced by many, but those of us who study the research know that climate is a political tool of globalists – a redistribution of the U.S.’s wealth.

Thank you, Ryan White Editor, Thirty-two years ago, I watched as Ryan White prepared to enter Hamilton Heights Middle School. Ryan, a hemophiliac, had contracted HIV while being treated for that disease. For a variety of reasons at the national, state and local levels, many people were misinformed about this deadly disease. It was 1987, and people were scared. When people are scared, people can say and do irrational things.

My family and I, along with the nation, huddled around the TV that evening and watched Ryan’s first day at school. I’ll never forget in a truly made-for-TV moment that girl running up to Ryan and hugging him before he even got to the doors.

As the days turned into weeks, we all learned a lot about HIV and AIDS. As the weeks turned into months, Ryan turned into the face of AIDS education. A few years later, he died. As a kid myself at that time, I was always amazed at his poise, strength and his positive attitude in the face of such incredibly overwhelming circumstances.

Ryan showed the world that through conversation, caring and compassion we can learn, heal and move forward as a society. I hope we, as a nation, can continue to remember and teach these lessons to future generations. Thank you, Ryan.

I just found a past-due notification from traffic court. Apparently, I had an overdue parking fine and I was being HUMOR penalized for failure to pay on time. It was an unintentional oversight.

On the news there was a story about an 86-year-old man in Arizona who was fumbling through his drawers (which is a disturbing image) and found a $1 parking ticket he got 60 years ago. Like me, he forgot to pay his fine.

Henry knew if he conveniently misplaced the summons, he could pay it decades later when a buck would be chicken feed. He assumed he could pick up some positive press for seniors at the same time. The story made him sound like a hero. There was no penalty levied and the BMV threw him a little party when he paid. The press ate it up.

The next day, Henry returned all the library books he checked out in 1950. Once again, all fines were waived.

I thought I had some good ammunition here to plead my own case. After all, my ticket was only a month old, and clearly Henry got big breaks for being a senior. I’m a senior, too. So, I picked up the phone.

“Hello, is this traffic court? Look, I have an overdue ticket, but I wonder if you read about Henry, the old guy who didn’t pay his parking ticket for 60 years?”

“Yes, of course we did. What an adorable story. We have his photo on our bulletin board as a lesson to all about the value of honesty. Who’s calling, please?”

“My name is Dick Wolfsie, and I…” “Yes, Mr. Wolfsie. We have your photo up, too. It’s disgraceful that just because you are on TV you think you can stiff the BMV.” “I don’t get it. This codger, Henry, doesn’t pay his ticket for six decades and he’s a hero. I’m four weeks late, and you double my fine?”

“There’s obviously been a mistake. We usually triple it after a month.”

“How many years would I have to go before my failure to pay goes from criminal to adorable?”

“You should live so long, Mr. Wolfsie.”

Country star returns with ‘Not Like Us Tour’

“I feel I have it documented MUSIC as I go, to a certain extent,” he said. “Of course, there are songs that are just put in for energy and flow.”

Gilbert, 34, is in the midst of his “Not Like Us Tour.” The country star returns to Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center at 7 p.m. Sept. 21, exactly one year from his last performance in Noblesville.

One song on the upcoming album is “What Happens in a Small Town,” which he sings with Lindsay Ell. Michael Ray and Ell are the opening acts.

“It’s wonderful to perform that with her every night, especially with it going up on the charts like it is,” Gilbert said. “It timed out perfectly. Lindsay is an amazing person and performer. I have a blast watching her on stage. She’s a rocker. She fits right in. Michael Ray is a good buddy of mine.

He’s been out on tour with me before.”

“What Happens in a Small Town” and “Not Like Us” will be released on his fifth studio album, “Fire and Brimstone,” which will be released Oct. 4.

Gilbert is awaiting the birth of his daughter, who he said is due any day. Gilbert planned a break, so he said so long as the baby isn’t too late, it shouldn’t affect his schedule.

Gilbert and wife Amber’s first child, Barrett, was born in November 2017.

“All the albums have been chapters of my life, and this one is no different,” Gilbert said of being a father. “When I write about my life, it’s bound to influence it. Overall, I think our style will stay the same. We’ll always dance outside the box.

One of my favorite and most important pieces is this chapter, life in general, is going to change (with another child). It will make for some good songs.”

Gilbert said he always has songs in his head and some demos completed.

“I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to write with some of the best songwriters in that town,” he said of Nashville, Tenn. “Sometimes, you might hit a couple

of songs that might fit the narrative of an album you are working on, or they might fit the narrative of the next one.”

Gilbert said usually before an album is released, he starts on the next one.

When Gilbert first arrived in Nashville, he enjoyed his first success writing songs for others while playing in smaller venues.

“We were playing motorcycle clubs, bars and college clubs,” Gilbert said. “We built a following we were all proud of before (country star Jason) Aldean cut those songs. When he did, it was an amazing jump for us, and it was a step up. We had to grind for quite a while. Since then, it’s been a steady ride. We’ve been blessed with some awesome fans. We are going to ride this thing until the wheels fall off and then get us some new wheels.”

Gilbert wrote Aldean’s singles “My Kinda Party” and “Dirt Road Anthem.”

Gilbert has close ties with NASCAR, and the series has been using the title track “Not Like Us” in its marketing “It’s a passion my record label (Big Machine) president and I share,” Gilbert said.

“I grew up around racing and have been a

racing fan, in general. Definitely a NASCAR fan.”

Gilbert performed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s 400 Fest before the 2017 race. In fact, the race was named the Brantley Gilbert Big Machine Brickyard 400.

“It’s a legendary place,” he said of IMS. “It’s always a blast to head up that way, check a race out and play some music and see my mom’s side of the family (in Rushville).”

Gilbert is a strong supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project, which assists veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Gilbert’s Georgia high school friend, Josh Greene, returned home from war with PTSD after Greene watched a friend, Army Sgt. Jonathan Lootens, die from a roadside bomb in Iraq. Gilbert watched as Greene struggled with substance abuse.

“He inspired the first verse of ‘One Hell of an Amen,’” Gilbert said. “That’s the first time PTSD hit home. It was the first person I knew well (who had) it. Everybody’s got their heroes. Those guys and girls (in the military) are mine.”

AAA Insurance Carmel PorchFest is set for 1 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 15. Carmel held its first PorchFest in 2014, becoming the first city in Indiana to hold one.

The first PorchFest was held in Ithaca, N.Y. in 2007 and has grown each year.

The musical acts range from acoustic to electric and solo to ensemble in a free family friendly event. There will be performances on 19 different porches. Sets are all 45 minutes.

Clay Ross and three fellow members of Ranky Tanky played together as a jazz quartet, The Gradual Lean, at the CONCERT College of Charleston (S.C.) in the late 1990s.

“I brought the idea to the band to reform and perform Gullah music,” Ross said. “While this culture is familiar to audiences at home in the Lowcountry, I felt that this was something unique and authentic that we could share with the world.”

The Lowcountry is the region along the coast of South Carolina and Georgia, including the Sea Islands. The Gullah are African Americans who live in the region. The descendants were brought to the U.S. as slaves and developed their own Creole language, using an English base with elements from various West African languages.

Ranky Tanky will make its first appearance in the Indianapolis area at 8 p.m. Sept.

13 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

Ranky Tanky loosely means “to get funky” in Gullah. Ross said jazz influences also are always part of the music.

“This is just a part of who we are as musicians,” he said. “Also, Gullah culture contributed much to the root of all American music. Everything from blues to jazz to folk to gospel owes something to Gullah culture, and you will hear all of that in our sounds.”

The band will play material from its “Good Time” album as well as its debut album, “Ranky Tanky,” released in October 2017.

For the second consecutive year, “Tunes on the Tarmac” is cleared to land at Indianapolis Executive FUNDRAISER Airport.

A fundraiser for Flight1, a nonprofit that supports kids facing serious health or emotional challenges through flying, “Tunes on the Tarmac” is an evening of food, beverages and live music for adults 21 and older.

The Sept. 28 event is from 6 to 10 p.m. at the airport, 11329 E. Ind. 32 in Zionsville.

Featured performers are national recording artist Amy Gerhartz, a Nashville resident who has recorded six CDs, and special guest songwriter/musician Chris Trapper, a Boston native whose songs have been used in several hit movies and TV shows.

Tickets are $50 and include food, an open beer and wine bar, entertainment and a chance to see private jets. All proceeds benefit Indianapolis-based Flight1, an all-volunteer organization that builds confidence in kids ages 5 to 18, who are seriously ill or coping with the death of an immediate fam-

“With the help of certified flight instructors, each child sits as pilot-in-command and typically completes a day, night and crosscountry flight. As children work the controls, it becomes clear of what is possible and what they are capable of doing. We call it, ‘Confidence through accomplishment.’”

Last year’s inaugural “Tunes on the Tarmac” raised more than $20,000 for Flight1.

THEATER The season opens Jan. 4, 2020 in a Louisiana beauty salon with Robert Harling’s landmark play “Steel Magnolias.” It is rated PG-13 and is on stage through Feb. 2.

Audiences are invited to put on their boogie shoes for the first new show of the season, “Saturday Night Fever,” opening Feb. 6. Rated PG-13, “Saturday Night Fever” is on stage through March 29.

“An American in Paris,” opens April 2. “An American in Paris” continues through May 10.

“The Sound of Music” is Beef & Boards’ 2020 Family Show, starting May 14. It is on stage through July 3.

Leaping onto the Beef & Boards stage starting Aug. 13 is the Tony Award-winning Disney musical “Newsies.” “Newsies” is on stage through Sept. 27.

History of the St. Petersburg’s Peter and Paul Cathedral Commentary by Don Knebel The Peter and Paul Cathedral is St. Petersburg’s most visible landmark. It also is the final resting place of Russia’s TRAVEL most famous rulers.

In 1703, Tsar Peter I established St. Petersburg on land captured from Sweden. To protect his new city from an expected counterattack, Peter established a stone fortress on an island in the Neva River that leads to the Baltic Sea. He named the fortress for Saints Peter and Paul. In 1712, the same year Peter made St. Petersburg his capital, he began building a church in the center of the fortress. Having seen the great Protestant churches of Western Europe, with bell towers and soaring spires, he built the church in that style rather than in the style of other Orthodox churches of the time, most featuring domes. Peter ordered the massive bell tower completed first so that it could settle in the marshy soil before adding the remainder of the church. When the church was completed in

1733, its 404-foot tower, topped by a golden angel carrying a cross, made the Peter and Paul Cathedral the world’s tallest Orthodox church, a title it retained until 2010.

All but two of Russia’s imperial rulers, starting with Peter I, and some of their family members are entombed in sarcophagi inside the cathedral, which is now a museum.

The body of Nicholas II, executed in 1918 during the Russian Revolution, was reinterred in the cathedral in 1998. All but two of the 41 tombs are made of white marble. The tombs of Alexander II and his wife were carved from solid blocks of semi-precious stones, each weighing more than 5 tons. Because of lack of space in the cathedral, more recent dukes and duchesses are interred in the domed Grand Ducal Mausoleum, built near the cathedral at the end of the 19th century.

I am a proud naturalized Hoosier. Although I was born and raised in Oklahoma (Boomer Sooner!), GRAMMAR GUY I’ve lived in Indiana for more than a decade. If I’ve learned one thing during my time here, it’s this: Indiana loves corn.

What about eggcorns?

An eggcorn is an unintentional word substitution we sometimes make in a phrase because we misunderstand or mishear the original phrase. The eggcorn got its name from linguistics professor Geoffrey Pullum in 2003, when he came across an article on Mark Liberman’s linguistics blog, “Language Log,” that discussed a woman who substituted the phrase “egg corn” for the word “acorn.” Pullum suggested that the linguistics community start referring to these phrases as “eggcorns.” The moniker stuck.

The difference between an eggcorn and a pun is that a pun is intentional; to the eggcorn utterer, the phrase may be an unintentionally clever way of relaying a misunderstood phrase. Here are some examples: “pass mustard” instead of

“pass muster,” “escape goat” instead of “scapegoat,” “bond fire” instead of “bonfire,” “flush out” instead of “flesh out” and “mute point” instead of “moot point.”

As you can see, these phrases actually make sense, although they’re technically incorrect. I had a co-worker (let’s call her Nadine) who unknowingly employed eggcorns all the time. Since I didn’t know what an eggcorn was, I used to refer to these phrases as “Nadinisms.” She would probably accuse me of being a “rebel rouser” for putting this in print. Just know I’ve changed her name here because, as Nadine used to say, “it takes two to tangle.” She really had a “sick sense” for eggcorns.

I hope I’ve “wet your appetite” to think of some more eggcorns. There certainly are a “wild variety” of them. Please note I’ve put all eggcorns in this article in “flotation marks” so that you know you’re not seeing an “optical delusion.”
