I-465, I-69 plans considered

“The goal of transportation this project is to maximize safety and minimize congestion throughout the interchange,” said Myers, communications director for the Greenfield district.

INDOT held an open house for area residents, commuters and business owners Aug. 23 at Heritage Christian School.

The proposed Clear Path 465 includes added travel lanes on I-465 from the White River Bridge (approximately 2.4 miles west of I-69) to Fall Creek (approximately 2.15 miles south of 1-69) on the northeast side of Indianapolis. Portions of I-69 are set to be reconstructed between I-465 and 82nd Street to accommodate a modified I-465 and I-69 interchange configuration.

The open house was one of the first steps of the project. Its objective was to provide an opportunity for those in attendance to give input on the environmental process, discuss key issues, promote collaboration and build understanding and support through the project.

This fall the selection of a preferred alternative is expected to be made. In the spring of 2019, INDOT will publish a draft environmental assessment and hold a public hearing. In the summer of 2019, INDOT will publish its final environmental assessment.

The project construction will begin in the spring of 2020.

Between 2011 and 2013, there were more than 1,000 crashes in the project area.

According to INDOT, contributing factors include congestion, excessive delays and inadequate weaving distances.

Tire Rack Street Survival program for teenage drivers returns to Grand Park

“It made her stretch into driving conditions she didn’t anticipate,” Woodard said. “It’s probably the best money I’ve ever spent. It was a great opportunity for her to see some adverse conditions. I don’t know how you can justify not sending your kid to it, honestly. For as little as it costs and as much as you pay for insurance, it would be silly not to send your kid to it.”

The Street Survival program returns to Westfield and will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at Parking Lot C at Grand Park. It is designed to teach teenagers, who have a driver’s license, how to drive in emergency situations. This will be Westfield resident Larry Clarino’s 33rd time as an instructor for the program, which is run by the BMW Car Club Foundation, a philanthropic wing of the BMW Car Club of America.

“This is not driver’s ed by any means,” said Clarino, a past president of the Westfield Lions Club. “What got the Lions Club involved was when a member’s grand-

son lost control in wet conditions and hit a tree and lost his life due to inexperience. This is precisely what we teach. This Lions Club member came to me because he heard me talking about the club at Lions Club meetings. He asked if it would be possible to do one here in Westfield. I talked to (Westfield Mayor) Andy Cook and he understood immediately because he has three grandchildren about to get ready to drive.”

Tire Rack, headquartered in South Bend, is the national sponsor of the program. The Westfield program is sponsored by the Central Indiana region of the Porsche Club of America.

“We have them sliding around and have them lose control, which is the only way to do it to teach them to gain control,” Clarino said. “It’s the only school I know that uses the cars that the kids drive every day. If the kids are driving a Ford Focus, it’s pointless to teach them how to drive in these conditions with a BMW.” Randy Faunce, the director of drivers’ education for the Porsche Club in Central Indiana, will serve as the head classroom instructor.

“We take those car-control skills we teach to adults on the track and teach the same skills to teenagers in the parking lots,” said Faunce, an eye doctor.

Former IndyCar driver and television racing analyst Scott Goodyear gives the ultimate endorsement to the Street Survival driving program.

“All three of our kids have been through the Street Survival program twice,” said Goodyear, a Carmel resident who twice finished second in the Indianapolis 500.

Goodyear learned about it from a friend at the BMW dealership when he Goodyear was looking for advanced driver’s training for his oldest son, Chris. After his son participated, Goodyear was able to watch the program the next time it was in the Indianapolis area. After talking with officials, Goodyear volunteered and has made appearances on the program’s behalf and done promotion videos the past seven years.

“It’s something all our kids should go through because they learn three basic principles,” Goodyear said. “The No. 1 is the proper use of their eyes, where to look and scanning the road. Looking far enough down the road is the biggest reason we all get in accidents, let alone if it’s teenagers or adults. The use of the eyes is the most important tool they have.”

Another thing the program teaches teenagers is to maneuver the car in ways they haven’t done during regular driver training.

“You can’t because you can’t do evasive driver maneuvers with your trainer on a public road,” Goodyear said.

“Here, you are in a controlled environment. You can do accident avoidance. They get a chance to learn about the car and the car won’t slide out from under them or skid if they know how to control it correctly.”

The third thing is driving on watered-down lots.

“My daughter thought that was the best part of it. She loved it,” Goodyear said. “They understand what to do when the car skids. They understand what the gas pedal does in that kind of situation. The biggest takeaway is do something. For teenagers, especially. If something happens in front of them, because of their incorrect use of eyes, they are fixated on the truck that stopped in front of them or the load that fell off, so you are going to drive where your eyes are focused.”

Suffering the insufferable

The silly little rituals that we do become the distinct and enormously important markers that identify us as a part of, or excluded from, a social group. A pierced ear can imply one thing for a man, a different thing for a woman, and yet another for a child. Why don’t we pierce our pet’s ears but we do to the animals we eat? And a piercing in the eyebrow, nose or nether region can project an entirely different message. Still, why do we feel compelled to stick any foreign object through our bodies?

The rituals around food are among the most varied and interesting. Much is related to resources. If we keep animals that produce milk, we eat cheese. If we live by the sea, we eat fish. We prepare, serve, share and consume our meals along very old and established lines. Growing up in rural Indiana, fresh vegetables were abundant and cheap. Each meal included crudités, a platter of them, raw. No civilized restaurant would dare start a meal without them.

Today, this pattern, one could imagine, has been replaced by the review and consideration of the appetizer. How is it that we came to need food to make us hungry for more food? It may be true that there is nothing better than a deep-fried jalapeno popper with a cold beer. Yet, isn’t small food still food?

When is the thing that we believe to be the warm-up actually the thing itself? Can we claim that the set-up is somehow different from the doing without deceiving ourselves into believing that small food calories don’t count? When we imagine that we are waiting to begin living our lives, are we simply living a different life already?

Insufferable (adjective): too extreme to bear; intolerable.

I’m bringing the term back, humor my friends. Why? Because I find myself using this wonderfully crafted word almost every single day – starting with one of my daughters.

Don’t get me wrong. I love her. She’s weird, but in a cool, I-don’t-give-a-rat’stail-about-what-any-of-you-think way. Her self-confidence is truly astonishing, given her questionable sense of style and her often-untamable mane of red hair. But she spends a large portion of her week with her color guard pals, 70-plus teenage girls who are wading through the drama of high school; sometimes together, sometimes not so much. Every night when I drive her home, I’m subjected to the latest “Mom, can you believe she did that?” and “Can I just tell you what happened with (insert girl’s name here)?” Trust me when I say it is with sheer force of will that I can keep from openly eye-rolling. Verdict? My daughter has become insufferable. Because I never hear “Hi, Mom. How was your day?” Or even “Can we talk about those Kardashians?”

Our half-hour together is literally her venting about people I don’t know and how she’s clearly above it all.

Insufferable also comes to mind whenever I hear our president. Whether he’s tweeting, campaigning or speaking off-script, I’m reminded of my 16-year-old. Just like her, he’s too extreme to bear. That’s insufferable, folks. I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s far more poetic than “poop show,” which is what I used to call him and, arguably, more on point. Luckily, I’m not required by parenting law to love him! Peace out.

One-way processes Commentary by Melkote Ramaswamy Trying to put toothpaste back into the tube is only one classic example of an irreversible process. It is a cinch to take out tissues from a box. Putting them back – in case you took out too many – is something else. Same thing with a napkin dispenser, especially the ones you find in a pizzeria. It is impossible to pack your suitcase the same way it was before the customs officer ransacked it. You may not mind the inconvenience so long as you didn’t have to pay any customs.

When you reverse your car, it is nearly impossible to go back the same way you came forward.

I know many have scratched their side view mirrors while backing up from their garages. I feel jittery when I have to reverse in one of the quick oil change places with an underground ditch.

A staple once removed is useless, so, too, is a tight-fitted paper clip. It is

easy to climb a staircase or escalator going up. Going backward is indeed a challenge.

Microphones and loud speakers are examples of one-way devices. You speak into one and hear through the other.

The irreversible world extends to the human domain as well. We may be good speakers but poor listeners and vice versa. We are all good at giving advice but taking is another matter. We all love to edit but very few are good writers.

Remembering Jerry Lewis Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I dedicated my performance at Indy Fringe last week to the late Jerry Lewis. Born Jerry Levtich, he humor traced his ancestry to Eastern Europe, the origins of classic Jewish literature and the humor that came as a response to the repression Jews experienced for millennia. I never met Jerry Lewis, but my closest friend for almost 60 years, Burt Dubrow (now an independent TV producer in L.A)., worked with Jerry on several of his Muscular Dystrophy Telethons. I talked to Burt about his hero and mine.

How would Jerry like to be remembered?

He’d want to be remembered as someone who made a difference. I don’t think he felt appreciated for what he did for MD. He raised billions of dollars for kids with neuromuscular diseases.

Did other comics recognize his value?

My favorite quote was from Jim Carrey, who said in so many words after he heard about Jerry’s death, that there would be no Jim Carrey without Jerry Lewis.

Do you think he felt underestimated as a filmmaker?

In this country, yes. In France, no. There,

they compared him to Chaplin. “The Nutty Professor” was one of the biggest films of its time. He didn’t get credit until way after.

Why did he not get the credit due?

Slapstick may look silly, but he was meticulous in what he did. If you look at his sight gags in his movies, even the Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis movies, it was all very choreographed.

The MD Telethon was part of my childhood. That’s the first time I saw some of those amazing stars and performers, all there for Jerry and for the kids.

Jerry did the telethon between 1966 and 2010, and he raised something like $2.5 billion. He was the face of those MD children.

He loved those kids, stayed in touch with many of them.

The Westfield Chamber of Commerce will host the annual Lantern Awards at the Palomino Ballroom event at 6:30 pm. Sept.

29. The event will honor Westfield’s exceptional residents and businesses.

The event began in 1982 as Community Night but evolved into the Lantern Awards in Russell 2007.

“We call them that because of the history of Westfield with the lantern and the Quaker community. Each award that we give out symbolizes a piece of a lantern,” Chamber President Jack Russell said. “We have the Lantern Award, the Beacon Award, the Wick Award, so different parts of it that make up the lantern. It’s very similar to how you make up a community.”

Winners are nominated by the public and then voted on by the chamber board.

Attendees will have the opportunity to vote on the winner of Business of the Year at the ceremony.

Showcasing history Voices from the Past set for Sept. 8

The annual opportunity to explore Westfield’s past is approaching. “Voices from the Past” is set from 4 to 8 p.m. Sept.

8 in Westfield. Tours are offered every 15 minutes, with the last tour starting at 6:30 p.m. The 90-minute walking tour begins at the east entrance to Asa Bales Park. This is the seventh year for “Voices from the Past,” which spans a time from 1834 to the 1950s.

“We change up the script that the actors recite,” Wells said.

“We have used the same scripts, but every year is different from the year before. Along the tour, the tour guides are giving our attendees information about important landmarks, points of interest throughout downtown Westfield. Along their tour routes, they go to the anti-slavery cemetery, which is located in Asa Bales Park.”

The actors in the cemetery perform three short skits portraying people in Westfield’s past. The tour then continues to Old Friends Cemetery Park, which is on South Union Street.

There will be three more skits.

“The people they are portraying range from Asa Bales, one of the founders of Westfield, to people through the 1950s,” Wells said. “So it’s a wide range of prominent citizens they are portraying.”

Wells said approximately 125 to 150 people attend each year.

Second-grade students take a field trip that morning.

“They get to meet the actors, ask questions and play some games from the 1800s,” Wells said.

Chicken Salad Ingredients: 4 chicken breasts, 1 red bell pepper diced, 1/4 cup diced purple onion, 1 small diced Granny Smith apple, 1 small can of crushed pineapple (drained well), 1/4 cup pecan pieces Preparation: Grill or cook 4 chicken breasts. Shred/cut and mix with 1 small red pepper, 1/4 cup purple onion, 1 small can of crushed pineapple (well-drained), Granny Smith apple and pecan pieces. Add olives and/or grapes if you like, then mix-in mayo to your liking.

Commentary by Don Knebel

Rabat, situated along the Atlantic Ocean, is the capital of Morocco. Its most visited site honors a king who protravel tected Morocco’s Jews during the Holocaust.

In 1927, the French, who gained control of Morocco in 1912, designated 18-year-old Sidi Mohammed ben Yusef as Morocco’s sultan, or ruler. In 1940, the pro-Nazi regime of Vichy France ordered the sultan, a direct descendant of Muhammad, to impose severe restrictions on Morocco’s 250,000 Jews, who had lived in Morocco for centuries.

Insisting that his title as Commander of the Faithful required that he treat all Moroccans equally, he refused. When Allied forces liberated Morocco in 1942, its Jewish community remained unharmed, with Jews still working in the sultan’s government. Sultan Muhammad, grateful for Morocco’s liberation, hosted the historic Allied conference in Casablanca in 1943.

When Morocco gained its independence in 1957, Sultan Muhammad became King Muhammad V. After he died suddenly in

1961, 75,000 Jews were among the public mourners. In 1962, King Muhammad’s son, King Hassan II, began construction of a mausoleum for his father near the river Bou Regreg. The mausoleum, completed in 1971, is a magnificent example of classic Moroccan architecture, with a gleaming white exterior and a green tile roof. Interior walls are covered with mosaics, and the carved ceiling is covered in gold leaf. The mausoleum now includes the white onyx tombs of King Hassan II and his brother, along with that of Muhammad V, located in the center. Visitors of all religions are allowed inside the mausoleum, which also serves as a mosque, where they can also observe a traditionally dressed man sitting in the corner, reading from the Quran.

Rabat’s mausoleum is not only a monument to a king, it is a monument to tolerance and respect.
