Westfield resident Julie Robertson may soon be required to either move out of the Villages of Oak Manor or remove three of her PETS six greyhounds because of a state statute that permits only three pets per property in certain residential zones.

Robertson refuses to remove the dogs and hopes a favorable Board of Zoning Appeals ruling will satisfy the HOA, which filed the complaint.

A notice dated Aug. 26 gave Robertson 30 days to remove three of her dogs.

Robertson said she wasn’t aware of the statute when she moved into her home 11 years ago. She’s had several of the dogs for up to 11 years. All are former racers.

“They (the original developers) helped me pick out the biggest lot to have the biggest fenced-in area for my dogs,” Robertson said.

Roberston said she tried to be discreet when she learned of the statute and only let her dogs out two or three at a time. She didn’t hear any complaints until early June, when she received a letter from the City of Westfield notifying her of a complaint filed by Chad Ertel, association propery manager of Kirkpatrick Management, which manages the Villages of Oak Manor.

“The city sent me a letter telling me that I had so many days to talk to them and apply for a variance or I would be sued,” Robertson said.

“I immediately got in touch with the people in the planning department.”

The planning department sent a variance petition to the Board of Zoning Appeals to approve or deny. If the variance is granted, Robertson can keep her dogs for two years.

Because her dogs are aging, some of the dogs would likely die within the two-year window, which would bring her into conformance with the law. If she still owned more than three dogs at that time, the variance could come up for review. The exception would only apply to the dogs currently on the property.

The planning department’s variance and conditions will be presented to the Board of Zoning Appeals meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at City Hall, 130 Penn St. Members of the public can speak before the BZA rules on the variance.

Robertson agrees with the planning department’s variance and believes it’s fair. She said her dogs sleep at least 20 hours a day, and because they range from 8 to 12 years old, they aren’t disruptive in the community.

“I absolutely will never get rid of those dogs,” she said, noting she would move before removing the dogs. “I made a promise to them, and that’s never going to happen.”

Sheriff candidate — Hamilton County resident Jason Straw has announced his intent to run for Hamilton County Sheriff.

Straw is a resident of Westfield and a retired U.S. Air Force officer.

Local man practices urban farming in downtown Westfield

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Jeremy Callahan isn’t a traditional farmer, in that he doesn’t raise crops on sprawling rural farmland.

The process is called urban farming. Callahan is self-taught in the practice.

“I’m a CPA and I was getting burned out,” he said. “I needed a change, so in January of this year I started doing a bunch of research about farming.

I’ve always been interested in growing my own food.”

In March, he broke ground on a plot of land originally owned by his aunt and uncle and put plants in the ground.

“This year it’s kind of a test plot,” Callahan said.

“This fall I’m expanding into the front yard at my house and tripling the size of the current farm.”

Callahan mainly grows greens, root vegetables and tomatoes. He sells them under the business name Green Beard Growers at the Westfield Farmers Market. He starts all the plants from seed. His least favorite chore is pulling weeds but otherwise he enjoys all aspects of farming.

“Just do it,” he said. “I did some research when the ground was frozen, but I just did it.”

Callahan’s crops are organic. He spreads insect netting over the vegetables, eliminating the need for chemicals. He installs landscape fabric to keep weeds out. He doesn’t till the ground, opting instead for cover crops, which are planted during off seasons to replenish the soil with nutrients.

In the fall, he will install low and high tunnels to extend the growing season during cooler weather.

When his business grows larger, he plans to farm full time. He only sells at the Westfield City Market but sells out of products most weeks.

He sells whatever remains to the Rail Epicurean Market.

So far, neighbors along Penn Street seem to love the organic establishment. Callahan invites them to stop by and say hello whenever he’s there.

THE CALLAHANS IN WESTFIELD Many know the Callahan family from The Fern of Westfield, an event venue on Union Street just to the west of Jeremy Callahan’s urban farm. The Fern of Westfield has been a staple in downtown Westfield, but its business model will soon change.

“We were an event venue for a long time, but this fall we will change the concept to a before- and after-dinner place,” said Jane Callahan, co-owner of The Fern. “We will feature all-local artisans and serve drinks and have goods to buy. We will have a full bar and we will serve charcuterie before, and desserts after.”

Jane is the mother of Jeremy and Jeff Callahan. Jeff owns Callahan Pickups and creates electric guitar picks for USA Custom Guitars.

Jane said the idea for The Fern business model change was inspired by the recent Park Street restaurant success and the proposal to bring the Westfield Playhouse downtown.

“Westfield’s really booming now, and with Park Street and all the restaurants and the (Westfield Playhouse) building a theater right over here, we thought it would be a nice inbetween place for an evening out,” Jane said.

The Callahans will update some of the building’s aesthetics but much of it will remain the same. During daytime operation, the Callahans are working with a coffee shop to offer services from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. The before- and after-dinner services would likely be 4 to 9 or 10 p.m.

Commentary by Terry Anker For centuries, sailors have trusted the stars to guide. Alas, the Polaris is often obscured by weather. Then these dutiful mariners count on experience and faith to help them stay the course. As overcast days persist, the risk of drifting off course increases — along with growing anxiety in the ranks.

Teams form and follow direct interface.

Now, with the advent of new technologies, we have become increasingly dependent on the independence provided by them. As seamen rely upon satellites, nearly all of us find modern communication devices imperative. Calls, emails, texts and other services for instant communiqué leave us with both significant freedom and, ironically, its corresponding reduction.

How do we balance the human need for collaboration with our need for autonomy?

Can we spend the bulk of our time away from the office while still mentoring and supporting those we work with daily?

Perhaps the same is true with our relationships, families and communities. Are there times when it is wrong to just phone it in?

Or, do we simply need to find new ways to accommodate for expanding technologies to substitute for face time?

Recently, a community leader shared his frustration that during his extensive travel to build his organization, productivity among his team diminished. One wonders if the young and inexperienced managers might simply be seeking a sighting. Is it possible that a directive by email lacks a required nuance to inspire? Would seeing the boss, even virtually, be enough encouragement? Like sailors waiting for a break in the clouds to show the path, could they be somewhat adrift looking for the sky? We don’t require much but do require some.

Friends, the unthinkable has happened. I am (gulp) no longer (long, dramatic pause) a dance mom (cue tears).

Our daughter informed us HUMOR last week that she wanted to quit competitive dancing.

After five years of sequined booty shorts, Kardashian faux lashes and jazz hands out the wazoo, she is hanging up her tap shoes.

Now a freshman in high school, she wants more time for studying, socializing and work.

I mean, I get it. Dance takes enormous commitment and sacrifice, both from the dancer and the parent. I’ve lost track of how many days I’ve spent at various performing arts centers watching hundreds of routines to see my baby on stage for literally three minutes. And don’t get me started on the cost! Seriously, don’t, because I think I still owe from last year. Heck, on some level, I even believe this was the right call.

But when she read the text to her coaches explaining her decision, I cried. Partly from pride – the writer in me couldn’t help but notice her elegant and mature use of language – but mostly because I realized that her quitting meant that so was I. No more hanging with fellow dance moms at conventions; no more secretly judging reprehensible costume choices; no more complaining about the weekend-long competitions, even though I actually looked forward to the multiple Steak ‘n Shake runs and book-reading opportunities. The truth is that I loved being a dance mom and wasn’t prepared for that part of my life to end.

Perhaps more importantly, what nonsense am I supposed to write about now?

Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Surveys show that most people hate at least one part of their body. I’m not happy with my ears, for example. I HUMOR think they stick out more than they should. My wife says I’m crazy, and to be that obsessed with my own looks makes me appear elfish. I’m hoping she meant selfish.

While looking in the mirror over the weekend, I saw a chin I had not noticed before.

I was happy with the two I already had.

Fortunately, that morning I saw something advertised on TV that gave me hope. Called The Miracle Neck Slimmer, it’s a device they claim was created by a world-renowned physiotherapist. I was all ears.

The manufacturer guarantees a 68 percent reduction in neck wrinkles. I have achieved similar results by slinging my head back and always looking straight up at the ceiling. The results are temporary, of course, and I have slammed into several doors, but it does work. Well, I think it works. It’s hard to look in the mirror in that position.

The Miracle Neck Slimmer looks like one of those slap-and-chop thingies you pound with the palm of your hand to pulverize a Vidalia onion. You place the apparatus under your chin, then bob your head up and down like common poultry. Springs in the device create tension. It’s like your neck and chin are getting a good workout on a tiny StairMaster. You can see why I was hooked.

A DVD gives you directions on how to properly jog your skull to-and-fro, like you were auditioning to be a bobblehead. They also throw in an accelerator cream. It’s an anti-aging concoction, but it could be a stimulant to make your head go faster.

New biz to bring ice cream

Rail Epicurean Market PARK STREET co-owners Toby and Melanie Miles plan to open Cone + Crumb next year. The ice cream and pastry shop will move into the empty building to the east of Rail Epicurean Market at 205 Park St. “We really needed more space for our pastry production, and a lot of people said they wanted ice cream on this street,” Melanie said. “We thought it would be cool.”

The Miles have made ice cream a dessert option at Rail. The pastry display case will move over to Cone + Crumb when the business opens, but the restaurant will still serve desserts.

As for Cone + Crumb, Melanie said she expects to offer approximately 10 different flavors. Staple flavors like vanilla, chocolate and strawberry will be offered, but for those with a more exotic palette, there will be flavors using local seasonal fruits like persimmon or unique flavors made from local honeycomb.

Bookworms in Westfield will soon have a new hub.

Owner Jamie Degler BOOKSTORE plans to open her new bookstore, Turn the Page, at 149 S. Walnut St. next month. Outfitted with custom-made bookcases, Degler said she plans to have a varied children’s section featuring books for different ages. The adult section will focus on literary classics and fiction, with autobiography, cooking and other options available as well.

“It will be more of a mom-and-pop, small town-type of space,” Degler said. “My vision is to create an experience when (customers) walk through the door, a cozy, inviting, relaxation-type moment when they come in.

I know books are definitely coming back on the upswing.”

Degler said she wants to offer children’s events as well as a book club. Complimentary coffee, tea and hot chocolate will be available.

“I just feel like with the bookstore experience, when people come in they really want to be able to communicate with somebody and get that recommendation or your per-

A sports med doctor does what?

Commentary by Dr. Joseph Hui

Despite being a regular contributor to Current, I suspect most folks still aren’t quite sure what a primary care sports medicine physician does.

RIVERVIEW A primary care sports medicine physician treats concussions, broken bones, arthritis, chronic pain, sports-related injuries and disorders related to nerves, muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. All these treatments are done in a non-surgical, conservative approach.

Most primary care sports medicine physicians are part of larger orthopedic surgical groups and can provide prompt diagnosis and facilitate a quick transition to a surgeon if the issue warrants surgery.

For many issues, surgical intervention is the definitive method for treatment. However, the vast majority of orthopedic clinic visits are treated non-surgically, at least initially, with only a subset of patients actually requiring surgery.

For primary care sports medicine doctors who are trained in diagnostic and interventional ultrasound, real-time, cost-effective diagnoses can be achieved quickly, allowing precise injections and procedures to be

performed.

Diagnostic ultrasounds can be used to look at shoulders to assess rotator cuff tears, hips for pain associated with trochanteric bursitis, torn calf muscles, wrists for carpal tunnel syndrome in lieu of electromyography, stress fractures that do not appear on an X-ray and most other issues involving muscle, ligaments and tendons.

In my regular practice, ultrasound has become a powerful tool that helps me facilitate many minimally invasive procedures with little down time. This includes treating conditions such as chronic nerve pain outside the spine, chronic tendon and ligament problems like plantar fasciitis, tennis/golfers elbow and more.

Carmel Symphony Orchestra post proved to be perfect fit for Davis

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Alan Davis figured his Carmel Symphony Orchestra post was a good place to start as he moved from the museum MUSIC field to the orchestra world.

“I thought, ‘I’ll be here two or three years and I’ll take that leap to a larger orchestra,’” Davis said.

Although he has had those opportunities, Davis never saw a reason to leave.

“Why would I ever leave Carmel with the support I get from everybody and The Palladium?” Davis said. “The job I thought would be a temporary stepping stone turned out to be a dream job. I loved every minute of it.”

Davis, who announced his retirement earlier this year, spent 18 years as CSO’s president and chief executive officer.

Davis, 69, became executive consultant when Kimberly Dimond took over as executive director July 16. Davis, who will step down from that position Sept. 28, is proud of his long list of achievements.

“I’m proud the growth the organization has experienced over those 18 years,” Davis said. “We went from a small community orchestra playing in high schools and churches with a very small budget to the major regional orchestra we are today playing in The Palladium. The quality has grown over those 18 years. I wasn’t music director but I have a lot of pride in supporting that artistic growth of the orchestra. We’re much more visible now, I’m proud of that. We’ve expanded our educational offerings for kids and we’re going to do that again this year coming up.”

Davis said he is proud of the staff over the years, particularly Vice President and General Manager Denise Ryan.

“She’s been my right and left hand,” Davis said.

On a personal note, Davis is grateful for of all the friends he has made in the community.

“As I tell people, although I might sleep in Speedway, I really feel like I reside in Carmel,” Davis said. “I’ve made countless

friends over the years. Those are things I’ll take with me when I retire, all those friendships, the mayor, the city council, the township government, all of our donors and patrons. They’ve all become personal friends.”

Larry Lawhead, a longtime CSO board member whose term as chairman ended June 30, praised Davis for his role in CSO’s development.

“He’s a rare administrator who combined his Ph.D. musical training with administration balance,” Lawhead said.

Davis, a 1967 Speedway High School graduate, returned to Indianapolis from

Missouri in 1989, serving as a director of public programs for the Indianapolis Museum of Art. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana University’s music school. He received a doctorate in musical arts from Arizona State.

“I want to travel some more,” Davis said of his future plans. “I’d love to go back to Italy. I’ve not seen Austria or parts of Germany, especially since the reunification of Germany. I’d like to do a little more traveling in Southeast Asia.”

Frequently, Davis takes his vacation to visit a close friend in Thailand.

“He gets me a condo in the building on the beach next to his place,” Davis said.

“My condo costs me about $275 for three weeks. I couldn’t stay downtown Indianapolis for a weekend for that. I love the beach. I sit on the beach and listen to audiobooks on my iPod.” Davis, who started playing the organ when he was 12, has been a church musician most of his life. For the past 27 years, he has been the minister of music and worship at Westview Christian Church in Indianapolis.

Davis said he still plans to attend as many CSO concerts as he can.

“My heart will always be with this symphony,” Davis said. “You can’t give 18 years of your life into something and just walk away and not care what happens.”

Murray’s New Worlds postponed editorial@youarecurrent.com Because of a conflict in the artists’ schedules, The Palladium performance of New Worlds: Bill Murray, Jan Vogler & Friends, which had been scheduled for Oct. 5 at the Carmel venue, has been postponed.

The Center for the Performing Arts plans to reschedule the event later in the 2018-19 season, but ticket sales have been suspended until the new date can be announced.

The Palladium has added a performance by the Cool City Band, featuring classic swing sounds from the 1930s and ‘40s, at 8 p.m. Sept. 7. Guests will have the opportunity to dance on The Palladium stage.

Kids share screen with monkey

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Filming a pilot for a TV series was cool enough for Carmel’s 13-year-old siblings Mitchell and Amelia Wray, but ACTING the fact they were doing it with a movie star made it even cooler.

“At first, we were like it’s just a monkey, but then we think about it, and the monkey is way famous,” Amelia said.

Crystal, a 24-year-old capuchin monkey, made her acting debut in the “George of the Jungle” film in 1997 and has appeared in several movies and TV shows since then. She was in “Night at the Museum” and its two sequels and performed as the drug-dealing monkey in the “The Hangover II.” The Wrays filmed a pilot with Crystal tentatively titled “Primate Detectives,” which was shot this spring in Los Angeles.

“She knew when it was play mode, when she could play with us,” Mitchell said. “She knew it was professional mode, too, when the camera was out.”

Amelia said she and Crystal shared a cute scene together.

Amelia said. “At first, she was a little timid, but we warmed up to each other.”

When Crystal is comfortable with people she starts grooming them by picking through their hair, Amelia said.

The Wrays, who are eighth-graders and homeschooled, are splitting time between Los Angeles and Carmel.

Mitchell spent the entire 2017-18 school year in Los Angeles while Amelia spent the second semester there.

The relatively new menu item features beef tenderloin tips, pickled banana peppers and broccoli atop a bed of rice tossed in a pepper cream sauce. I opted for asparagus instead of broccoli. The hearty meal is very filling, and the sauce has a slight kick to it.

The tenderness of the meat counteracts the crispness of the veggies and the kick of the peppery cream-based sauce.

Another option Pure Eatery presented me was its blackened tilapia over a bed of pearled Israeli couscous tossed in pesto and sautéed squash and zucchini for $13.95.

Talk about portion sizes. For the healthier diners out there, this meal would be an excellent option with its giant slab of tilapia serving up a hefty amount of protein. The

Firkins are beers fermented in casks and served out of the cask. Approximately 10 Indiana breweries will attend the indoor/outdoor event and offer 25 to 30 beers out of 9-gallon casks.

Knepp “This is the first event of its kind in the state, a cask ale-only festival,” said Justin Knepp, founder of Indiana on Tap, which is hosting the festival with Union Brewing Co. “All these other festivals serve cold beer out of kegs, but (with firkins) the beer is fermented in these casks. It’s the craftiest of craft beer in the world, and as much as you try, no two cask beers will be the same due to the fermentation process.”

All of Union Brewing Co.’s beers are cask beers. Some of the other participating breweries have brewed firkins before, but many will be doing so for the first time.

“For the craft beer fans out there, it truly is utterly neat,” Knepp said. “It’s already what makes Union Brewing Co. different. The goal was to create a space that the homeowners could use to entertain family and friends by adding defined spaces and storage.

1. The biggest transformation came from adding a wet bar and peninsula for seating. The new cabinetry added plenty of storage space.

2. In addition to the bar seating, bench seating also was added around the pool table near the bar area. Bench seating is a perfect hidden storage solution.

3. A theater room was created by adding a wall and a doorway with a sliding barn door. This makes it easy to close off the theater room for privacy or leave it open to the rest of the basement.

4. An entertainment system was added, creating convenient storage for the sound system, game consoles and controllers.

5. Additionally, new luxury vinyl tile replaced the carpet throughout the basement.

Background info: This home in the Long Ridge West neighborhood of West Carmel doesn’t appear to need much remodeling. The reason the homeowners were looking to remodel was not because the space was outdated but because it didn’t function well for them.

BEFORE PROBLEMS The original basement was underutilized because it lacked defined spaces and storage solutions. The layout of the space didn’t work for how the homeowners wanted to use it. The original basement used basic materials that didn’t fit the owners’ personal style.

An area of modern Cairo contains what is said to be the best surviving remains of a Roman fortress. The fortress, which fell to the Muslims, is now at the TRAVEL heart of Christian Cairo.

In the sixth century B.C., the Persians, then in control of Egypt, erected a fortress just east of the Nile River near where an ancient canal led to the Red Sea. The fortress marked the dividing line between Lower (northern) and Middle Egypt, where boats on the Nile paid tolls for transferring from one region to the other. A town developed around the fortress, called “Babylon,” for reasons that are not entirely clear.

When the Romans gained control of the area in about 30 B.C., they recognized the strategic importance of Babylon and built an expansive brick and stone fortress near the river, featuring multiple bastions around the perimeter. The fortress was connected to the Nile by a drawbridge supported between two circular towers, each 108 feet in diameter. Babylon was later associated

with the journey of Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus to Egypt to escape King Herod and became the seat of a Christian bishop.

In 640 A.D., Christian defenders of the Babylon Fortress held out for six months before being captured by Muslim invaders.

After the Muslims gained control of Egypt, they allowed Christians to build churches within the fortress walls. The famous “Hanging Church,” built in the seventh century, is suspended between the south gate towers of the fortress. The circular Church of St. George was built in the 10th century over the foundation of the northern bridge tower. Six other churches, a convent and the Coptic Museum are all now within the perimeter of the former fortress, designated “Coptic Cairo” for the Egyptian Christians who still worship in this area.
