WWS hosts safety symposium

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com On July 19, Westfield Washington Schools hosted a safety symposium at Westfield High School as a follow-up to the EDUCATION June 12 school safety public forum.

“After the Noblesville shooting, we really quickly realized that many parents maybe didn’t know what we were already doing within our school district in regards to school safety and the measures we had in Grate place as a school district,” Supt.

Sherry Grate said. “We wanted to be able to do a better job of communicating what those measures might be.”

Grate said approximately 250 people attended the June public safety forum, which served as an opportunity for the district to share information on school safety practices and protocols with the community. It also gave the public an opportunity to ask questions and share ideas with district leaders.

“We spent the last few weeks going through all of that information that was shared,” Grate said. “We really looked for common themes.

Safety is such a priority, and it’s a conversation that’s ongoing.”

Todd Burtron, chief of staff for the City of Westfield, presented at the symposium and spoke on the partnership between the city and WWS to ensure safety within the school district.

“It’s important, I think, for you as community members, as constituents, to appreciate the two government units that impact your life perhaps the most directly, the city and the school corporation, and that we stand shoulder to shoulder,” Burtron said.

Director of Special Services Chase Stinson said people often associate safety enhancement with school resource officers, extra locks on doors and more. However, he discussed social and emotional learning and how to provide tiered interventions of support and how it works as a first mechanism in prevention.

Stinson said every school in the district now has a multi-tiered support team which is led by counselors, teachers, support staff and administrators.

Stinson also said the district is restructuring the role of school counselors, especially at the elementary level. More counselors have been added to the intermediate, middle and high schools. WWS has partnered with ASPIRE, and it has therapists in the schools to serve students.

The district also is examining how it reports bullying.

Director of Human Resources and School Safety Chris Baldwin gave an update on drills

and background checks.

“We will be increasing the frequency of those lockdown drills,” said Baldwin, noting that drills will occur during class time, recess, lunch and passing periods to prepare for multiple types of emergencies.

Also, the district has begun SafeVisitor background checks.

“It’s a new visitor and volunteer background check and office check-in system,” Baldwin said. “It’s just another layer of security in our larger safety plan that we’re talking about this evening.”

SafeVisitor is a new, comprehensive background check for any visitors attending lunch with a student, helping with class parties or any other activity outside the office area. When a background check is complete, it is valid for three years.

Director of Operations Joe Montalone spoke on the security of the district’s buildings during construction at the intermediate, middle and high schools.

Montalone “Everyone that is on-site at any of our buildings has had a background check, and they have a large sticker on the side of their helmet that declares them eligible to be in the work zone area, and the construction manager is monitoring that constantly,” Montalone said.

School entry points also will be modified by positioning cameras to allow for a full view of the person entering, and glass at entry points will be glazed.

Quarterly symposiums are expected to be held to glean insight from the community and to communicate differences and changes regarding school safety.

On the police side, Westfield Police Dept. Chief Joel Rush presented on the importance of partnership within the community.

Rush described how the Westfield Police Dept. is estabRush lishing police substations to allow police officers to be in schools more often.

“When an officer has downtime, when an officer is doing a report, they can do the report in the school instead of the police station,” Rush said.

The WPD has two school resource officers and plans to add a third at the start of this school year, and a fourth by January and a fifth by the beginning of the 2019-20 school year. DISPATCHES F.C. Tucker real estate stats — Sale prices are on the rise once again in Westfield as homes return to spending fewer days on the market.

According to F.C. Tucker, the average sale price for homes in the city was $342,934 at $132.68 per square foot in June 2018. This sale price represented a 14.2 percent increase from June 2017. Homes in the city sold in an average of 35 days, 18.6 percent faster than June last year.

Chalk the Walk — Student Impact of Westfield, Prevail’s 100 Men Campaign, Westfield Young Life and Westfield Washington Schools will partner for the “Chalk the Walk to School: Inspire, Motivate, Encourage” event. The event will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 6 and attendees can grab sidewalk chalk and decorate various areas around the city to allow students to enter their first day of school with vibrant, positive messages. Chalk the Walk will take place at the 500 block of Union Street, Hoover Street and the entrances to Westfield intermediate, middle and high schools. The elementary schools will have separate Chalk the Walk dates. Chalk is available at Student Impact, 536 N. Union St., or at school entrances. The event is free and registration is not required. School supplies drive — David Weekley Homes is hosting its school supplies drive in cities across the nation.

Democrat numbers increasing — A record number of Hoosier Democratic women, millennials and first-time candidates are running for seats in the General Assembly this year. Nearly 90 percent of the 125 legislative races on the ballot are filled.

HAND, township talk affordability in Westfield and Hamilton County

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com For many residents, Hamilton County is a fun place to live, work and play. But not everyone who works in the county can afford to live there.

COVER STORY The Noblesville-based Housing and Neighborhood Development, Inc. recently held six public input sessions to update Hamilton County’s housing strategy. The Westfield session took place July 10, and residents discussed affordability and access to affordable housing within the city. Westfield Washington Township Trustee Danielle Carey Tolan was one of the attendees.

She often assists residents struggling to pay their rent.

“We are an emergency relief situation, so if somebody comes in needing utility or rent assistance because of an emergency Carey Tolan situation, whether that’s a lost job or unexpected medical bills or transportation issues, they come in and apply for assistance,” Carey Tolan said.

The township spent more than $14,000 in assistance for rent and utilities in June alone. Last year, the township only spent $4,000 in rent and utility assistance in June.

“We are definitely seeing an increase,” Carey Tolan said.

“Our numbers are very much like the numbers back in the Recession. The requests, especially when due to rent and housing, they could be asking for $1,800 for their two-bedroom apartment.”

Affordability is defined as paying 30 percent of income toward housing and utilities. Households paying more than 30 percent are considered “housing-cost burdened.” HAND Executive Director Jennifer Miller said between 2000 and 2015, household incomes increased 21 percent Miller but rents increased 51 percent.

Of the 14 apartment complexes in Westfield, only five offer one-bedroom units in the $600 per-month range. They are Casey Acres, Carmel Landings, Hamilton Square, Commons of Spring Mill and North Union Apartments. Although those options are available, Carey Tolan said even they aren’t always affordable for residents.

“There’s a single mom with five kids and she’s working, but she can’t afford Casey Acres,” Carey Tolan said. “So, if something happens in life, like a flat tire, for instance, she comes in (to the township).”

Carey Tolan also said the majority of people who seek assistance from the township have a mental health issue.

“We need to determine what affordable housing in Westfield truly is and where it can fit into our community because it can fit in,” she said.

Local job shortages, specifically within the hospitality industry, such as hotels and restaurants, could be because of the affordable housing issue, Carey Tolan said.

Continued from Page 8 “Every single restaurant has a staffing problem in Westfield, and every single entry-level position is not filled,” Whitesell said during the HAND public input session.

“We want to be a hospitality corridor, but every single restaurant says, ‘I’m not going to be able to staff my restaurant, and the primary reason is because the employees can’t live here.’”

A Taco Bell supervisor declined comment to Current, but Carey Tolan said many employers are continuously raising their starting wages because filling jobs is difficult.

However, entry-level employees aren’t the only citizens who are struggling to afford housing in Westfield. Empty nesters planning to downsize and millennials straight out of college encounter similar issues.

“I have a 25-year-old who works for the schools and is looking for housing but can’t afford to move out,” public input attendee Stacy London said. “We have a rental house behind us that has four families London living in it. You have people who can’t afford the housing, so they’re going to go into one home together, and that’s not a safe situation.”

A number of Casey Acres residents told Current they wanted to move into a house this year but are unable to find affordable housing in the area and must remain at the apartment complex for at least another year.

Similarly, high home prices, coupled with unaffordable rents, are deterring entry-level position employees from living within the city.

“There’s always a desire to see more expensive homes and less of them, and not more affordable homes and more of them,” said Jon Dobosiewicz, a local land-use professional, during the public input meeting.

“The public side of development is they want fewer homes at a higher price. I’ve never been to a plan commission meeting where they have said, ‘You need to have more houses and less expensive.’ It’s something we are missing. We are not providing (affordable housing) and recognizing as a community we need to provide it.”

Why is affordable housing a conversation topic now?

Housing and Neighborhood Development, Inc. conducted six public input sessions to learn more about local housing affordability and create an updated housing assessment for the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, which must be done every five years.

Brooklyn-born songwriter Vic Mizzy turned his considerable talents from popular music in the 1940s and ‘50s to the emerging medium of television in the 1960s.

Therein came some of his most memorable, if not significant, contributions, including the theme songs from “The Addams Family” and “Green Acres.” Thanks to long runs on the networks, followed by generations of re-runs and remakes, these simple tunes have earned a place in our collective memories.

In “Green Acres,” Mizzy uses just 76 words to lay out the tension between Eddie Albert’s Oliver Wendell Douglas, New York power attorney who hopes to commune more directly with nature, and Eva Gabor’s Lisa, who exclaims, “New York is where I’d rather stay – I get allergic smelling hay.”

Mizzy has outlined a central tenant of our evolving civilization: What is it to be a human in our natural state?

While an increasing number of us today seek urban densities, a generation ago the trend was to flee these confines to more suburban locales. Even further back, we had a preference for the rural. Even in our vacations, we further confuse the question.

Millions camp, sleeping under the open sky much as our ancestors did for centuries.

Others travel great distances to enjoy luxuries.

Yet, as our society continues to plod on, we hear echoes of our past. How do we reconcile our desire to contribute to Albert’s the chores and still enjoy Gabor’s the stores? Are we really getting back to nature if we are “glamping” in some Victorian safari tent? Is it a dodge or just a compromise to our conflicted selves?

By the time most of you are reading this, I will have essentially survived Summer 2018. Woo hoo! I return to the classroom Aug. 2, and while that means I HUMOR will soon be subjected to long days with other peoples’ sometimes smelly and usually angsty teenagers, it also means that in a few weeks, a beautiful yellow bus will come to collect my own precious angels. Can I get an amen?

Don’t get me wrong. We’ve had a great summer here at chez Wilson. Quality relaxation time, some fantastic vacations and plenty of Netflix binges. But enough already. Enough of the sleeping ‘til noon or three. Enough of the basement Fortnite marathons. Enough of our college kid all up in my grill. I don’t know about your family, but mine functions more smoothly with schedules and routines and expectations of punctuality and productiveness. My pathetic attempt at a chore chart did not cut it.

Bottom line? Everyone is fed up with everyone else. The girls have created a biochemical wasteland in their bathroom.

Get rid of property taxes Commentary by Donald Rainwater One of the hallmarks of a free society is property ownership. I was taught from an early age that home OPINION ownership was part of the American Dream. I have held that belief for most of my adult life, until recently, when I started examining property tax laws in Indiana.

I have come to realize that the American Dream actually is a modern version of the feudal system of Medieval Europe, when people were obligated to live on their lord’s land and give him homage, labor and a share of the produce in exchange for military protection. If they didn’t pay for the privilege of living on the land, they were expelled from the property.

What happens if you own property in Indiana and don’t pay your semi-annual homage to the state? Yep, you’re expelled from the property for failure to pay property taxes. Is that ownership? No, we are being granted the privilege of living on the land, as long as we pay our taxes.

That’s not ownership; that’s leasing.

The Indiana General Assembly says that our property taxes are capped at 1 percent of assessed value; then they reassess and raise the tax every year for as long as you inhabit the property. The 1-percent cap is a red herring. Property taxes keep rising and, if you cannot pay, you will be expelled.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Property taxes could be capped at 1 percent of the purchase price of the property and assessments could be abolished. Even better, property taxes could be converted to a 7-percent sales tax at the time of purchase. This would eliminate property forfeiture due to failure to pay property taxes, which wouldn’t exist. Then, we would truly own our property, like free people do.

My problems started after I disconnected my cable in the basement. I watch television downstairs while riding HUMOR my exercise bike, but if the plot gets exciting, I sometimes forget to pedal and by the time the show is over, I’ve only “traveled” about 28 feet — not even a first down. It was time to get rid of the distraction.

When the cable company got my receiver box back in the mail, they thought I wanted to discontinue my entire service package, and the next day all my televisions displayed the message, CUSTOMER DISABLED, which is a very unfortunate way to phrase my predicament. To fix this problem, they needed to know all the numbers on the backs of all the cable boxes on all five TVs. I have a great photo of my wife scrunched behind our big-screen TV, nudged in between a giant fern and a china cabinet, trying to read the tiny numbers and talk on her cellphone at the same time.

Mosquitoes in at least two Hamilton County parks have tested positive for the West Nile virus, with a MOSQUITOES third positive sample retrieved from 2nd and Washington streets in Noblesville and a fourth from U.S. 31 and 181st Street in Westfield.

County health officials made the announcement July 13 after collecting samples from parks in Noblesville and Fishers.

The first positive sample was reported July 13 in Fishers’ Cumberland Park, 10580 Cumberland Rd. The last reported positive sample was Aug. 22, 2017.

Hamilton County Health Dept. vector control specialist Alex Davis, who oversees mosquito operations for the county, said the season is just getting started.

“It’s not uncommon to get positive samples in June, but definitely by July we start seeing an increase,” Davis said. “We are pretty much on track with what a normal

year looks like. These samples are not out of the norm.”

The health department has breeding sites that have been identified in previous years.

Davis said he does routine visits to each site.

Samples are sent to the state for testing.

Depending on results, Davis said the county will go after the adult mosquito population to prevent the spread of West Nile virus.

Davis recommends residents dumping all standing water around the house.

Davis said mosquitoes tend to migrate toward stagnant water.

“I would expect there to be further positive test results just based on seasons and years past, but prevention is the best key,” Davis said.

On July 17, the Hamilton County Health Dept. began spraying the affected areas.

A truck-mounted sprayer began spraying at sunset and covered a buffer area of approximately 1 mile around the positively sampled area.

Bier Brewery has been a staple on Indianapolis’ northeast side since November 2010, but in the fall the brewGROWTH ery will open a new Carmel taproom.

Co-owner Jerry Connor said he’s been working on obtaining the location at 13720 N. Meridian St. for more than a year.

“Why that space has been so intriguing to me was the parking availability and the exposure to (U.S.) 31 and the accessibility from just about anywhere on 136th Street and 146th Street,” said Connor, a Westfield resident.

Connor said he wants to offer events that appeal to the nearby neighborhoods with the new taproom.

“We like to do things in the parking lot to bring people together. That was extremely interesting to me,” he said.

The 3,500-square-foot taproom will double the size of the brewery on 65th Street.

Bier Brewery is working on partnering with Puccini’s and BoomBozz to offer carry-in options for food at the new taproom.

Blake’s Smiles supports autism causes

By Rick Morwick • rick@youarecurrent.com Blake Dauby is an accomplished singer, a skilled musician and an avid creator of music videos.

GIVING BACK In addition, he is a dancer, video editor and a gifted craftsman who loves nothing more than making people smile — literally — through his art.

His signature items are handmade puzzle-piece smiles, forged in his pottery studio. He gifts them to anyone in need of a smile.

“You keep it as long as you need it or pass it on to someone else who needs it,” said Dauby, a 20-year-old Carmel resident whose varied talents and eclectic tastes belie a lifelong condition that doesn’t deter him.

Dauby has autism.

“Blake has never let this disorder slow him down,” said Steve Dauby, Blake’s father. “He is very active in his community, school and various clubs. He has participated in show choir, orchestra, Best Buddies, student government, dance marathon and Carmel High School Television, just to name a few things.”

Of all things, Blake is probably best known for his ceramics work, a skill he developed at Carmel High School — and one that led to his recent founding of Blake’s Smiles, a nonprofit that raises awareness and funds for groups that support autism causes.

to charities by selling and auctioning his ceramic pieces, discovered his artistic gift after taking a ceramics class at Carmel High School, where he graduated in 2017.

“We reluctantly signed him up thinking he might not make it past his first day,” Steve Dauby said. “Four years later, with the help of his special aides and patient art teacher Ms. (Sarah) Wolff, he has made incredible clay pieces and has been privileged to have several of his pieces exhibited in annual art fairs.”

Buoyed by Blake’s affinity for ceramics, his parents, Steve and Barbara, set up a studio for him in the basement of the family home. There, he creates everything from vessel vases to pots to Sgraffito drape molds to, of course, smiles. “(I) took an art class in high school and made some cool stuff,” Blake said. “(I enjoy) shaping stuff, bowls and cups, on the wheel.”

Besides creating ceramic art, Blake also paints, plays guitar, violin and piano and sings the national anthem at CHS basketball and lacrosse games and at autism events. He also works 12 to 15 hours per week at Walgreens on Michigan Road and dedicates time to establishing Blake’s Smiles, which derives its name from his early childhood habit of asking people who weren’t smiling the same question: “Is it fun?”

a visual learner and struggled socially,” Steve said. “He would famously ask anyone he would see without a smile on their face, ‘Is it fun?’ Most people had no clue what or why he was asking this, but it was his way to calm himself that everything was OK if people did not have a smile on their face.”

On Aug. 3, Blake will participate in the DOZ Charitable Foundation’s outreach program, which in the past five years has donated more than $100,000 to local charities. Dauby O’Connor & Zaleski is an accounting firm in Carmel, where Steve Dauby is a partner.

During the program, part of a DOZ recruiting event for accounting students, Blake will speak about and share his art pieces. Everyone will literally leave with a smile.

“The students will actually go home with one that Blake has already made,” said Nicole Wright, assistant controller for DOZ. “They can take them back with them and share the smiles.”

Dealing with sensory issues Diagnosed with autism as a young child, Blake Dauby — and his family — endured many of the trials and tribulations associated with the disorder.

“Like most kids on the autism spectrum, growing up Blake had numerous sensory issues,” said Steve Dauby, Blake’s father.

“Many of these issues can be crippling and alter not only the child but loved ones and care givers. Most refer to the child as being on sensory overload. One of Blake’s many sensory issues was smell and taste.

He would not allow his hands, face or lips to touch anything with an odor, different smell or wasn’t clear in appearance.”

In time, Blake became involved in multiple activities, including music, clubs, student government and art. He looks forward to a future that includes his job at Walgreens, making and editing music videos, overseeing his nonprofit Blake’s Smiles and refining his art.

Oh, and one other thing.

“Having fun,” said Blake, who has three sisters Stephanie, Amanda and Samantha, and a brother, Matt. His mother is Barbara Dauby.

“We have 36 members who do a variety of types of art from oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, photography and textiles, woodworking, jewelry, glassworks, ceramics and gourd art,” CCA Gallery Advertising Chair Lesley Haflich said. “All of our members are encouraged to enter a piece for the contest, but it is optional.”

The winner’s art will be incorporated into the poster, which will be for sale at the CCA Gallery Sept. 1. The gallery started in Broad Ripple, moved to Zionsville in 2002 and to Carmel in 2015.

Pianist Line to perform

That comes in handy on CONCERT the concert stage.

“I’m most known for doing a medley of requests,” Line said. “People shout out requests and I write it down.

Then I play about 15 minutes of all 20 to 25 songs that people love. It’s all off-the-cuff by ear. It’s something I’m known for doing.”

Line will perform at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Studio Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. Her tour is called “The Lorie Line Simply Grand Solo Piano Tour.”

“When I do the holiday tour, I bring a pop chamber orchestra and a special featured vocalist,” Line said. “When I do this tour, this is for diehard fans that really just love me. They love it because there is nobody else on the stage, it’s just me.”

Line performs 90 minutes with no intermission.

Traditionally, Line said she comes to the Indianapolis area for her holiday show. She had been doing the holiday show for 29 years.

Line has a vast catalog to draw from. She has recorded approximately 50 albums and has published 60 books on music.

“Most of my material is non-holiday, so everyone gets to hear their favorites,” Line said. “The fun thing for me is I have a brand new album. It’s called ‘No Worries,’ and it’s going to be coming out in August, so I’m going to be playing brand new songs. It’s a pop project, and I haven’t done a pop project in about 10 years. It’s all the crazy stuff that’s (been) really popular the last 10 years, everything from Sam Smith to Ed Sheeran to Adele to even some fun things like ‘Game of Thrones.’”

Jiffy Lube launches art project

By Heather Collins editorial@youarecurrent.com If you’re driving by a Jiffy Lube in Indiana, you might be surprised to see a work of art on the side of the building.

The “Love Train on the MURALS Monon Trail” murals inspired Jiffy Lube of Indiana’s owner Steve Stanner to launch the Every Part Matters public art project. Jiffy Lube partnered with the Arts Council of Indianapolis to create the collection and will display a total of 13 murals by 2019 throughout Indiana.

“Public art appeals to us because it is accessible to everyone and removes financial barriers that can be associated with enjoying art,” said Melanie Allen, project manager.

“We’ve worked hard to create connections with the artist and murals to the neighborhoods in which they’re displayed.”

The second mural in Hamilton County, “Marbles,” is at the Jiffy Lube at 1840 E. 151st St., Carmel.

“The message ‘You Have Company’ on this mural refers to the often invisible challenge of mental illness, which seems isolating to its victims,” Allen said.

The mural was created by Seattle-based cartoonist Ellen Forney.

The goal was to better utilize all the space in the basement to create a comfortable area for the family to unwind and relax.

1. The first major change came from finishing the entire basement and dividing it into several rooms – a living space, a bedroom and a home gym.

2. Additionally, new luxury vinyl tile flooring was added to the space. This is a perfect flooring option for any basement because of its durability.

3. A wet bar was created in the living space, making it a great area to entertain and host guests.

4. Also, a projector and projection screen were added in the living space, creating a comfortable home theater.

5. A large barn door was added dividing the living space from the home gym, making both rooms feel more open while also adding a decorative element.

Background Info: This early 2000s home in the Aberdeen neighborhood of West Carmel belongs to a young family. Overall, the home functioned perfectly for the family but lacked a recreational space for the homeowners and their children to workout, watch movies and entertain guests.

BEFORE PROBLEMS The original basement was only partially finished, so there was plenty of square footage that was not being used. The finished side of the basement lacked design elements that would make it a more comfortable and functional space for the entire family.

Harod Spring’s drinking test Commentary by Don Knebel Harod Spring lies at the foot of Mount Gilboa, about 15 miles south of Nazareth in northern Israel. The victorious TRAVEL soldiers for a decisive Biblical battle in the nearby Jezreel Valley were chosen by how they drank from the spring.

According to the Book of Judges, nomadic Midianites from the east had repeatedly invaded Israel on camels, killing Israelites and stealing their crops and animals. On one occasion, a large contingent of Midianites was encamped in the Jezreel Valley, preparing for another raid. Gideon, a local leader, assembled 32,000 men at the base of Mount Gilboa, planning a direct attack. God appeared to Gideon, telling him to send home 22,000 men who were afraid to fight the better equipped and more numerous Midianites. God then told Gideon to observe the remaining troops as they drank from Harod Spring, which flows from Mount Gilboa through a cavern opening. Three hundred of Gideon’s men, apparently prone, lapped water from the spring like dogs, using their

cupped hands. The rest of the 10,000 men knelt to drink. At God’s instruction, Gideon sent the kneelers back to their homes and trained the lappers for a daring raid on the Midianites.

One night, the 300 raiders, divided into groups of 100, surrounded and then entered the Midianite camp, carrying torches and blowing horns. The startled Midianites scurried from their camp in all directions, killing each other in the ensuing melee. The men Gideon had sent home, joined by other Israelites, eventually annihilated the lost and widely dispersed Midianites. Gideon himself killed two captured Midianite kings whose earlier victims had included his brothers.

Today, Harod Spring is within Ma’ayan Harod National Park. A park sign tells about Gideon’s famous drinking test, but a fence in front of the cavern opening prevents visitors from trying out alternative techniques.

My name is Curtis. I’m a 33-year-old man. I can’t swim.

At some point GRAMMAR GUY during summertime childhood swimming lessons, I flunked and didn’t receive my certificate to move to the next class.

As a result, I dropped out. For a pasty redhead, I already didn’t like being outside in the first place. Now, I can barely doggie paddle my way out of a kiddie pool.

If I were to hypothetically win a sailboat, I’d sell it as quickly as possible. I’d put that sail up for sale. The difference between the words sail, sale, sell and cell are salient. And, before you can accuse me of being a sellout, let me assure you – like the theoretical sailboat – my argument will hold water.

First, let’s tackle the difference between sail and sale. Sail can be used as both a noun and a verb. As a noun, sail refers to a piece of fabric attached to a boat to help steer it using wind. As a verb, sail refers to a trip taken on a sailboat.

A sale is a noun that refers to the act of selling, specifically when a good or ser-

vice is traded for some kind of currency.

For example, mattress stores all think it’s a great idea to have big sales over Labor Day weekend. It’s as if the store owners all got together and decided to celebrate hard work by giving people a great excuse to do the exact opposite.

Sale is different from sell. Sell is a verb; it is the act of working toward the goal of making the sale. You can sell a boat. Once you sell the boat, you have made a sale.

A cell is a noun. It can refer to a few different things. A cell is a small room in which a prisoner is locked. A cell also is a small group acting within a larger organization. A cell is a basic structural unit of all organisms. A cell is a battery. “Cell” is short for “cellular.”

I hope my clarification of sail, sale, sell and cell went swimmingly, which is more than I can say about my own swimming skills.

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT NEEDED

There is an immediate opening for an Administrative Assistant at the International Montessori School (www.intlmontessori.com) for work from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The successful candidate should have a college degree (or equivalent), be very familiar with MAC and/or PC computers, have knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, be good in math, and be passionate about customer service, children, and parents. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written) will be necessary. Prior experience working in an office will be an advantage. The chosen candidate will report to the president / principal of the school.

The International Montessori School (www.intlmontessori.com) in Carmel, Indiana, has several employment opportunities for the 2018-2019 school year.

Openings include Administrative Assistant, Art Teacher, Music Teacher, Assistant Teachers, and Substitute Teachers. Working hours will be between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM Monday through Friday, although specific schedules will be determined by the position. Qualified candidates should be comfortable working with children ages 3 through 6 years old and should be enthusiastic, kind, and creative with a love for children. Compensation is competitive and is based on experience.
