Dozens rally at school board executive session

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Dozens of people showed up at Washington Woods Elementary School to rally for the reinstatement of Stacy EDUCATION McGuire as Westfield High School principal. McGuire recently was reassigned to director of alternative learning, a newly created position.

The rally took place for an hour prior to the June 23 Westfield Washington Schools Board of Trustees executive session, which was closed to the public and media, in which school board members were trained by an outside consultant about the performance of the role of the members as public officials. The executive session originally was scheduled for June 18, the same evening as McGuire’s father’s funeral.

Rally attendees chanted “Bring Back Stacy Mac” as school board members entered the building. Board members Bill Anderson and Rebecca Ogle were greeted with cheers and applause because they are the only members who voted against the personnel change.

McGuire did not attend the rally, but her mother, Carolyn McGuire, did. Several past and present WWS staff and students also attended.

Carrie Larrison, who previously worked as a guidance counselor at WHS and recently retired, led the rally. She said although attendees want McGuire reinstated as principal, the issue encompasses far more than McGuire’s reassignment.

“Since I just retired, I’m a little safer than the others in speaking out,” Larrison said.

“This is a bigger issue.”

Larrison said she had received emails from past staff about how they were treated poorly by current administration.

She also received emails from elementary teachers who felt oppressed and were told they were “not team players” if they spoke out against certain decisions made by WWS’ central office.

body, and it can’t be results-based because our high school has amazing results,” Gilbert said. “We are No. 1 in Indiana in graduation rate and No. 2 in college readiness, No. 4 in AP, No. 9 overall. It’s a great school system.

“We know the position (director of alternative learning) may be important, but we have a 98.7 percent graduation rate and there’s already two alternative schools available, so why we would need to move an effective leader from the high school without considering anyone else clearly doesn’t add up. Even if it’s an important program, there are a lot of questions about, how are we going to pay for this.”

Gilbert said he knew teachers were told budgets would soon get very tight and that it was uncertain whether staff will receive raises in the coming year.

“We’ve already been on lean times these last four years with all the (new positions) at central office, so we are not really sure what’s going to happen, but we know with adding this position and all the things that

go with adding a new school is going to cost a ton of money that we apparently don’t have, so why would we move someone right now?” Gilbert said. “We just want answers and transparency. We want to be respectful and honorable to all the leaders of our school district, but we want to know.

All we are asking for is more transparency.”

Gilbert said the district extended McGuire’s contract in October 2019.

“So, what has happened between then and now that has caused this?” he said.

Gilbert said the group believes the school board did not have complete information about McGuire’s reassignment.

“We want to make sure they have complete information now so they can make the right choice, and they can still fix all of this,” he said. “We can all win here.”

The group is creating a coalition and a website where teachers can anonymously report their thoughts and concerns about the administration. Both efforts are led by local developer Birch Dalton.

LEO CLUB RAISES $8,000 FOR LOCAL FAMILY

The Westfield High School LEO Club presented Kerri Hartman with a check for $8,000 June 22. The amount is a new record for the club’s annual pancake breakfast. The club is the youth affiliate for the Westfield Lions Club. Hartman works at Westfield High School in the cafeteria and has been impacted by cancer since 2012. She was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer, and it has now developed into Stage 4, having spread to her liver and bones. In addition, her husband, Gary, has been diagnosed with Stage 2 prostate cancer and her oldest daughter, Amanda, has been diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. Humane Society for Hamilton County breaks ground in Fishers

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Many area residents, along with city and county officials and Humane Society for Hamilton County staff, DEVELOPMENT attended the June 24 groundbreaking ceremony for the HSHC’s new site at 106th Street and Hague Road in Fishers.

HCHS Executive Director Rebecca Stevens said the effort to build a new shelter began in 2014.

“Six years ago, we said it out loud, and we had no clue how we’d get it done,” Stevens said. “For me, it was something I was dreaming about long before that. For about 10 years, it’s been a personal dream of mine and something I’ve been working toward.”

Stevens thanked a group of city and county officials and several donors, including Steven Cage, who donated $4 million to the project. The building will be named the Steven J. Cage Foundation Animal Wellness Center. An image of his black cat, Stanley,

Mayor Scott Fadness spoke at the ceremony.

When Anna Skinner bangs the gavel for the first time as the Westfield Lions Club president July 2, she ACHIEVEMENT will complete a series of firsts.

Skinner, 26, is the first female, the youngest member and the first from Westfield High School’s Leo Club, the Lions Club affiliate for youth, to become president.

Outgoing President John Wardlow said Skinner embodies the Lions Club’s mission to serve the local community to the global efforts of Lions Club International.

“She serves our community both personally and professionally,” Wardlow said.

“She’s an active member and serves in all our events, from picking up trash to our fundraisers. Anna brings an infectious energy and enthusiasm to the club. It’s been a tough year with COVID-19, virtual meetings and canceled fundraising events.

“Her energy and passion will help carry us forward into a new chapter for the club as we celebrate our club’s 90th anniversary (in October) and recover from a rough year.”

Skinner is the managing editor of Current in Westfield and Current publications in Noblesville, Fishers and Geist. The 2013 WHS graduate joined the Leo Club when it started her sophomore year and became the LEO Club’s first president.

“It was a new option for me to get leadership experience and get involved in the community as a high school student,” she said.

After taking time off for college, Skinner joined the Lions Club in 2016, becoming second vice president in 2018 and first vice

“I like that it’s big on sight and hearing conservation, diabetes (and) cancer, and we help a lot of people in the community through fundraisers and events,” the Fishers resident said. “I like the group of people.

They are very loyal to the community, and they like to give back.”

In 2017, Skinner became the first woman and youngest member to receive the club’s Lion of the Year award. The award is based on service, contributions and effort.

The club is conducting its biweekly meetings through Zoom. Skinner said the club will begin to discuss when to meet in-person under her leadership. Another mission will be making up for canceled fundraising events.

Skinner said another focus will be determining the future of the clubhouse, which is next to the Grand Junction construction in SINCE 1993 downtown Westfield.

To date, the state has progressed as scheduled through its reopening plan, although Marion, Lake and Cass counties are a week behind the rest of the state because of a higher number of cases. Most of Indiana is set to enter the fifth and final phase July 4, when most businesses and attractions can open at full capacity.

Leading by example Wellbeing Coalition of Westfield remains active during global pandemic

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com When the Wellbeing Coalition of Westfield formed in 2019, its leaders had no idea that a global pandemic would soon require a crash course in community need for the organization.

The group, which comprehensively addresses the well-being of the Westfield community, has remained active during the COVID-19 pandemic even though its members haven’t been able to meet in person.

They regularly meet via Zoom and offer resources to those in need.

“We had somewhat of a reboot of leadership and vision, and the pandemic certainly gave us some opportunity to have a lot of meetings along the way,” coalition member Jake Gilbert said. “We have a long list of things we would like to accomplish, but in general, we would like to become a central hub with a purpose of connecting our city, connecting people to each other, connecting people to needs, to work with nonprofits that can fill those needs, connecting nonprofits and organizations to the people.”

The coalition promotes awareness throughout the city.

“A lot of times what you find is we’re a fast-growing city, and a lot of people are moving here and don’t know how to get involved or where to get involved and don’t know how to seek help if they need it,” Gilbert said. “A lot of people wait to learn about how to get help until they need it, and that’s sometimes the worst time. Or someone can’t help a friend because they’re not aware of some of these great organizations that exist. We are not trying to do the job for our great nonprofits and the city, but we are trying to serve them in a way that helps them do their job even more efficiently and productive.”

A response team regularly meets with local nonprofits to ensure needs are being met and that there’s no overlap in services or gaps that need filled. To date, Gilbert said there hasn’t been much overlap of services.

“We really haven’t had that, like where a new church comes to town and says, ‘We really want to serve and partner in the community and open a food bank,’” Gilbert said. “Well, maybe that’s not what we need, maybe we need help with transportation or we need help with counseling at discounted rates.”

Even in a time of need like the COVID-19 pandemic, the coalition is accomplishing its mission.

“It’s been really inspiring. We would like to build on that momentum and keep going as the needs change in some sense,” Gilbert said. “We want to keep this spirit of regularly communicating and collaborating going and then build on our capacity to help orga-

nizations help our people and residents.”

Gilbert said the organization’s website runs efficiently and that much of the group’s objective is to fashion a COVID-19 response and provide help when the pandemic ends.

“Some of these things may still be needed even if they find an antidote,” he said.

“There’s all kinds of different ways to get connected and find the resources in one place, and I’m sure the average citizen in Westfield isn’t going to remember (all the nonprofits), but maybe they can remember us as a central hub, and they’ll know where to go to find help.”

SHORT- AND LONG-TERM FOCUS The Wellbeing Coalition of Westfield is focused on meeting immediate needs.

However, its broader goal is to create an action plan.

“In the long term, we want to create strategies to define intangible city values and make sure that the Westfield Way is communicated throughout the city,” coalition member Jake Gilbert said.

“We want to provide awareness for all of our nonprofits, and again, advocate for our people that need help. We are working on a strategy to launch a web of support so businesses, the faith community, schools and city government can work together on connecting people to the other people and services they need and supporting each other on a community-wide level.”

Too much credit?

Commentary by Terry Anker Who are these overlords? And what do they want from us? As more and more private and public entities demand to know everything about us in order to transact any business online — and more and more of these enterprises seem to store our confidential information in a sieve — credit reporting services have found a boon. These virtual detectives lurk the web to identify and notify if someone attempts to use the information to open a new credit card account or take out a loan. Good. It can be supportive to have a Big Brother watching over our shoulder in the event that a crook has breached the database of our insurer, BMV, IRS or just about anyone that transacts on the internet, and that gap allowed for the nefarious hacker to employ our information to disguise themselves obtaining fraudulent credit and otherwise spending our reputation and hard-earned money.

So, we engage FICO and scads of other players to keep an eye on us.

They report when our bills are paid, what balance exists on the mortgage and with whom we took it. For some of us, the notifications come daily. With each movement in balance, we hear about it and see a corresponding up or down change in the overall credit score awarded — the one that determines our creditworthiness and access to loans at attractive interest rates. The problem is that there is no instruction book. The companies tasked with controlling our credit do not want us to know how they do it. Pay down debt and get a better score? Maybe. Live addicted to credit cards and get a worse score? Perhaps not. Is too much credit better than too little? Really? How can we play the game if they will not tell us (or know) the rules?

Commentary by Danielle Wilson Now that we’re half way through 2020, I think I speak for all of us when I say, “Let’s burn this mother down.” But HUMOR there is a light at the proverbial tunnel. For me, at least. And vicariously for you, dear reader, because I’m about to attend Dance Nationals in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Let that sink in for a moment before you continue.

Excited by the column fodder possibilities? You should be! Not only will I be reporting on tarted-up toddlers, tweens and teenagers tapping their toes and twerking their tushes, but also the moms, who are often more bedazzled and dramatic than their daughters. It will be awkward with everyone in masks and attempting to social distance, but I think the safety measures will only increase the intense eye makeup applications and maudlin contemporary routine mishaps. Good times!

And should the unthinkable occur and the competition fail to produce any hilarious

antics, there’s always the setting. I’ll be in the Vegas of the Appalachians, friends – home to Dollywood, Paula Dean’s Lumberjack Feud Dinner Show, an upside down museum called Wonderworks, and enough ninja weapon stores, Putt-Putt courses and go-kart tracks to make many a manchild joyously weep. My keen observational skills are about to be unleashed in one of the prime people-watching places on the planet!

In the high heat and humidity of summer in the South! During a global pandemic! Be still, my beating heart!

Yes, this year has been terrible so far, but I truly believe it’s going to turn around.

It will be awkward with everyone in masks and attempting to social distance, but I think the safety measures will only increase the intense eye makeup applications and maudlin contemporary routine mishaps.

Editor, I want to let Hamilton County citizens know what the situation was like counting the mail-in ballots at the courthouse on (election day). A majority of the volunteers were older than 60. People were regularly in very close proximity in the close quarters of the council room.

Democratic and Republican partners at the courthouse were only about 3 feet apart while working. Masks, gloves and sanitizer were available, but their benefit is limited if almost no one is using them. I counted only 15 of 45 people that I could see in the council room wearing masks. Sanitizer was available in only two spots for 60-plus people. There was no cleaning or sanitizing at lunch.

There was no indication that the council chambers were sanitized overnight.

My ballot-counting partner had COVID-19 last month! Do we know if they had tested negative? People can test positive for weeks after. Did Hamilton County staff ask anyone about symptoms or COVID-19 history? They didn’t ask any of the five of us.

To put it bluntly, the experience was nerve-wracking and extremely disappointing. Accommodations must be made for the November election.

Riverview tests for antibodies Commentary by Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com I recently heard Riverview Health Emergency Room and Urgent Care at 9690 E. 116th St. in Fishers began PANDEMIC offering COVID-19 antibody testing to the general public, and Riverview staff were open to allowing me to take the test and write a firsthand account of my experience.

Although there are no FDA-approved COVID-19 IgG antibody tests, the FDA has authorized the tests under the Emergency Use Authorization because the tests meet specific criteria. The Riverview test determines if an individual has been infected with the disease with 88 percent accuracy.

Essentially, IgG is the body’s memory of how to fight an infection.

I received my test results the next day and was negative for the virus. The test took about 30 minutes. Riverview screens each patient prior to testing.

Appointments aren’t required, but pre-registration is available at eruc.riverview.org/ pre-register/. Patients will be charged an urgent care fee for the testing. In-network insurance providers include Aetna, Anthem, Cigna, Encore, Healthy Indiana Plan, Humana

Former-Carmel resident Moli Hall gets role on NBC’s ‘Council of Dads’

“My amazing Atlanta agent, Houghton Talent, sent me the audition for the role of Payton (‘Council of Dads’) TELEVISION and I immediately went to town researching everything about the show and the role itself,” said Hall, a former Carmel resident who lives in Atlanta. “I received the audition Monday night and had less than 48 hours to research, prepare the scene and film the audition. Less than 24 hours after submitting my audition, I got word that I had booked it, and four days later I’m out in Savannah filming.

“The entire process from receiving the audition to booking and actually starting filming all happened in a week’s time. Talk about a whirlwind.”

Hall will appear in the season finale of Season 1 of NBC’s “Council of Dads” July 2 (8 p.m., WTHR-13). Hall said she had an enjoyable time on the set.

“The entire cast and crew were so warm and welcoming throughout the entire process. I still chat with some,” Hall said. “I also had never been to Savannah nor Tybee Island before, so it was truly magical to open my trailer and be looking out onto the ocean and palm trees.”

The palm trees helped ease any nervousness Hall had.

The series is based on a dying father, Scott Perry, who asks three friends to help his wife by serving as father figures to his five children after he dies from cancer.

“Because of the premise of the show, working on ‘Council of Dads’ also reminded me that family is who and what you make it and that our loved ones never truly leave us,” Hall said. “They live through us through their imprint on the world and our hearts. ‘Council of Dads’ is such a powerful example of the power of love and warm acceptance. The story of the Perry family is truly beautiful and warms the soul.

Hall previously had small roles on “The Originals” on CW and on “The Walking Dead” and “Halt and Catch Fire” on AMC. Hall, who moved to Atlanta in 2016, began acting in films for her father Dan Hall’s company when she was younger.

“The amount of work in Georgia is absolutely bonkers, and it only keeps getting busier,” she said. “The tax incentives in Georgia, along with the cost of living, infrastructure and the varying scenery, makes it very appealing to producers to film here.

If you have the film bug and didn’t think about Atlanta, think again.”

Hall does modeling and voiceover work as well.

“I like to think of myself as a jack of all trades and a bit of a workaholic when it comes to the film industry,” she said.

“Acting and film/TV is my true love, but the majority of my work is (voiceover) oriented or print work (modeling).”

She was the voice of the Indiana Voter campaign this year as well as in 2018.

“The last few years I have been dabbling more and more into production work, mainly directing and producing,” Hall said.

“This year, I finally opened a branch of my father’s production company, Vizmo Films, in Atlanta, and currently I’m producing and directing a series of short films for a client, and I have plans to produce a series of my own this year as well.”

Noblesville’s Ruoff Music Center is one of three sites chosen for a rare experience.

For the first time, Live CONCERTS Nation will hold a U.S. drivein concert series, offering fans a live music tailgating experience July 10-12.

The other two sites are in St. Louis and Nashville, Tenn. Brad Paisley will headline on different nights at all three sites, appearing in Noblesville July 12.

The other Ruoff concerts will include Yacht Rock Revue July 10 and Jon Pardi July 11. Guests are allowed to bring chairs, food and drinks to their zone for the parking lot concerts.

A Live Nation spokeswoman said the event can hold approximately 1,000 cars. Tickets will be available for purchase per car, with a maximum of four people permitted per car “We’re constantly looking for creative and safe ways to get back to live music,” the spokeswoman said of whether more events will be held this summer.

The spokeswoman said the site is evaluating event logistics and staffing needs.

Fans can expect contactless ticket scanning through their window when they pull into the venue and then will be shown to their designated tailgate area, where they can park and enjoy the show from their own marked-off space. There will be dedicated buffer space around each vehicle to ensure social distancing. All artists will perform full live sets on stages set up in the parking lots of each of the venues.
