WHS grad making news at BSU

Former Westfield resident and current Ball State University student Jenna Liston has been shaping her big dream for years. Liston, a telePROFILE communications and journalism major, is into broadcast journalism and hopes to someday be an anchor on the Today Show.

Just recently, Liston was one of four BSU freshmen to receive an anchor position at Ball State’s selective Newslink Indiana program. Newslink Indiana focuses on hard news stories. Liston also hosts Connections Live, another BSU news program, which focuses more on feature stories. Liston’s Connections Live producer encouraged her to try out for Newslink Indiana, which overall led to her anchor position.

Liston has loved being on television her whole life.

When she was younger, her stepfather created commercials, and that inspired her love for being on air. “Watching my stepdad create commercials for St.Vincent hospital and the Children’s Museum was cool,� Liston said. “I started doing commercials for him as a kid, and I enjoyed being on TV in front of the camera and in that spotlight.�

Liston began pursuing her love for broadcasting when she attended Westfield High School. She immediately started taking media classes and anchored Westfield High School’s news program RockTV all four years of her high school career.

Once Liston reached BSU, she jumped right into the journalism life. She began taking all of her major telecommunications and journalism news classes, and joined Connections Live right away despite her nervousness on whether or not she was ready yet. “Definitely jumping right into Connections Live when I first got here helped because I was skeptical whether I should join freshman year or not,� Liston said. “I started out with all major classes for news and that helped me get comfortable. I am one step

Project GLOC – CrossFit Carmel announced that the fourth annual Project GLOC womenonly competition will be held April 25 and 26 at Roundtripper Sports Academy in Westfield.

Liston advises future journalism students to start strong immediately once they reach campus. “Definitely take a chance,� Liston said. “Don’t sit back and watch, there are so many people fighting for this career and your position and you need to get the courage and step out of your comfort zone to try something new because you will regret it if you don’t. If you think you have the talent for it, you should go for it.�

Liston plans on continuing to anchor for Newslink Indiana for the next four years of her BSU career, though she does have to try out for the position each semester. Once she graduates, she hopes to work for an entertainment show, such as the Today Show. Possibly she will run her own show. “I’m determined because I have a goal and a lot of people have a big dream that slowly starts to die, but I am not going to let that dream go,� Liston said. “I am determined to get to the top because why would I give up something I love to do?�

Investigators believe a Westfield house fire was started by a gas grill that was left on at the rear PUBLIC SAFETY of the residence on April 12.

The Westfield Fire Dept. responded to a residence fire at 416 Sonhatsett Dr. Crews were able to minimize damage by quickly attacking the fire. Residents were home at the time and the family’s German Shepard, Zeus, awoke the family.

The fire is estimated to have caused $70,000 in damages.

When the City of Westfield sold its water utility to Citizens last year, it profited with $90 million. The city put some of the funds PARKS towards retiring bonds and lowering debt, but remaining money will aid in infrastructure projects like expanding trail systems, paving, and constructing roundabouts.

On April 14, Mayor Andy Cook pointed out where a specific bridge would be built to connect the Monon Trail to Grand Park and Monon Trail Elementary School. The bridge, called the Anna Kendall, is located right off the Monon on the south side of Ind. 32 to the east of Oak Ridge Road. “The Monon will branch off and go straight north and join the existing Monon on Wheeler Road,� Cook said. “The Monon goes up to Grand Park, Monon Trail Elementary School, and by the end of next year it will go to Sheridan. This connects Grand Park with Westfield, Carmel, and Indianapolis.�

Plant a tree for Arbor Day

By Robert Herrington “ a^QTac/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ In 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees.

NATURE This holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska. Celebrating its 143rd anniversary, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the world and Westfield residents are invited to join the festivity from 10 a.m. to noon April 25 at Asa Bales Park, 205 W. Hoover St. “It’s a rain or shine event,� Westfield Parks Director Melody Jones said.

Jones said there are three big plantings going on currently including two Eagle Scouts projects and a class from Carmel at Osborne Park. “This year we aren’t having a formal tree planting because we have so many projects that are going on. Literally, thousands of trees are being planted,� she said. “Instead of doing a public tree planting this year we are just giving away 500 trees so people can plant them on their own property.�

Jones said the department will have five different varieties: tulip, sugar maple, redbud, bur oak and red pine, which the city has never given away previously. “Something for everybody,� she said. “You can have as many trees as you want. We want to give all 500 to willing homeowners or property owners that want to plant them some place.�

Jones said the city also has received the Growth Award from the Arbor Day Foundation for the fourth time. “That is a significant award,� she said. “That means we have increased tremendously way above our per capita amount and built upon what we did year after year after year.�

Trees have a considerable impact on the environment and can reduce the erosion of topsoil caused by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife. “Westfield is a Tree City and recognizes that trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of the area, and beautify our community,� Mayor Andy Cook said.

Why did you become a teacher? I’ve always had an instinct to help others, and many people have encouraged me to embrace that need.

When I left Purdue I had this vision of becoming a corporate person in advertising, but it seems the big man had other plans. After failing in that industry, I decided to follow my passion and began mentoring students in my hometown and coaching football. I choose to continue my education and became a school counselor.

What goals do you have for your students? My goal for the students I service is to empower them to leave a lasting impression for the next generation of students to follow. I want to develop a compassionate person who perseveres to meet any goal they may set for themselves.

What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills? As parents we must Fekete allow children to learn from mistakes. A parent’s natural instinct is to protect and as great as that instinct is in emergencies, we need to harness that desire at school. Like all inventors, without our failures we would not have the sweet taste of success.

What is your favorite movie? I’m a product of the 80’s so l love all the movies filled with the memorable one liner. My favorite would have to be “Sixteen Candles.�

Who is your favorite musician or band?

That is tough to limit to just one I love music, but I guess I’d go with Jane’s Addiction. I’ve seen them the most in concert.

What’s something your students might not know about you? My first consistent paying job was milking around 90 cows after school and on weekends for a local farmer during my sophomore year in high school.

When silence is not golden

Most of us probably forgot about the silence with which congressional investigators were greeted when they asked then Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton if she used a private e-mail account while in that position. We had ‌ until a news report last week brought it to light. The question, in a letter from House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and first reported by the New York Times, was posed seven weeks before Clinton’s tenure ended. When the State Department eventually responded to Issa’s demand in March 2013, nearly two months after she left office, officials also ignored the question about Clinton’s digital habits. “Given Clinton’s admission that she used a personal account and a private server exclusively as secretary, news of this apparent dodge adds to a scandal that has cost the Democratic presidential candidate dearly in polls. As the drip of damaging details continues, when and in what venue Clinton will address the growing scandal is the question,â€? Fox News reported. Investigation? What investigation? It doesn’t surprise us that a USA Today poll last week showed powerful craving among Democrats for an alternative to candidate Clinton. “A 55 percent majority of Democrats says it’s ‘very important’ to them to see strong challenges to Hillary Clinton for the presidential nomination. Another 25 percent calls it ‘somewhat important.’ â€? We find that incredibly telling. “ “ “ Vice President Joe Biden fired a shot across the Clinton camp’s bow when he told The Detroit News last week: “I haven’t made up my mind on (seeking the nomination). I have plenty of time to do that. ‌ (President Barack Obama) and I care about what has to get done in the next two, three months, and when you run for president you’ve got to run for president ‌ .â€? No giveaway there. Said Obama to an Ohio TV station, â€œâ€Ś I think she would be an excellent president.â€? Was that a shot across Biden’s bow?

In search of a problem

Were it not for the millions of dollars wasted and hundreds of people harmed by the debacle, one could be amused by the recent flap associated with the aborted legislative actions by the good folks at the Statehouse. One can understand, many of us believe that they “should� be doing “something.� Have we pushed these folks to seek problems which they might be able to “solve� with a legislative solution? With the passing of each and every year, hundreds of new pages are added to the Code books. And, millions of pieces of mail are sent to our homes extoling the virtues of this fine work. Unfortunately, the effort too often ends up being a solution in search of a problem. “We’re from the Government; and, we’re here to help!� Alas, the proclamation has come to be joke outlining the abject failure of many of our leaders to meet expectations. To be fair, we have unrealistically high anticipations of these folks. As our collective national faith in religion wanes, could it be that we are substituting one

deity for another? Do we pray to government to fix problems beyond the realm of even the most prominent of elected human officials? If so, what can we reasonably expect our authorities to be able to accomplish?

Safety? Protection? Security? Perhaps. Education? Infrastructure? Opportunity? Maybe.

Equality? Equivalence? Equity? Could be. Even as we lose confidence in the structures and institutions upon which our society is founded (look no further than voting rates as support for this supposition), we seem to demand more and more naïve wish lists from those who represent us. Sure, they make promises – often the kind of long-tales that would make Pinocchio blush – but, we love the assurances – a lot. Have we passed the point of self-reliance? Maybe the government can tell us.

Back in the fifties, I’d plop down in front of the TV and watch shows like “Gunsmoke,� “What’s My Line,� or “The Jack Benny Program.�

Deciding what to watch was simple. I looked through the TV Guide, made my selection, and tuned in, seldom rising to change the channel.

I tied a string to the electric cord connected to the small black-and-white set in my bedroom. At night, when I started dozing off, I’d give the string a tug and pull the plug out of the socket. Sadly, I never got any credit for inventing the first TV remote.

In those days, watching TV was relaxing.

But now, I feel anxious when I turn on the set.

When I grew up, there were only three or four channels, which made the selection process in those days much easier. Not only that, but if you happened to miss an episode of, let’s say, “Twilight Zone,� it didn’t really matter. Why? Because there would be something completely new and creepy the following week. But now, you have to watch these shows beginning with the very first episode or you will be lost (“Lost� is a good example).

What’s worse is that if you try to watch dozens of series at the same time, it becomes impossible to keep all the plots and characters straight. Imagine reading 24 books simultaneously. At least we have DVRs to help us manage our viewing time. That makes things much easier ‌ sort of. “Mary Ellen, when I watched “True Detectiveâ€? last night, I didn’t recognize the characters.â€? “Because, Dick, I think you recorded “True Crimeâ€? by mistake. Or maybe “American Crime?â€? “Or maybe I taped “American Greed?â€? No, I think it was “The Americans.â€? “Dick, did you record “Masterpiece Theatreâ€? for me?â€? “I recorded “Masters of Sexâ€? by mistake. I watched one episode already. Why does a guy have to prepare a sumptuous meal just to get his wife in the mood?â€? “I think you were watching “Master Chef.â€? “Well, I did record Kevin Spacey in “House of Lies.â€? “He’s in “House of Cards.â€? “I miss just plain “House.â€?

I really don’t want to watch all these shows, but I hear people talking about them at work and at parties, and I want to be as culturally hip as possible.

Right now, our DVR has a couple dozen programs on it. “We have so much to watch,� said Mary Ellen the other day. “We need to stay home an entire weekend and finally get through it.�

We used to say that about cleaning the basement.

I don’t like change. Maybe it’s my sense of order and predilection towards the mundane, but varying from HUMOR routine makes me anxious, particularly when I don’t initiate it. I also can’t stand going to the dentist. Too many cavities as a child and the ginger-propensity for needing more anesthesia than normal people (it’s true!) have left me with a lifetime of traumatic memories. So imagine my distress when I arrived for my semiannual check-up and discovered my usual hygienist had retired . . . the day before. On the outside I appeared sincere in my welcoming of New Lady, but on the inside I was calculating how fast I could sprint back to my van.

Here’s the deal. I’ve had to work really hard to overcome my fears of dentistry, and a large part of my “therapy� has been consistency. I’ve seen the same guy for 17 years, and he’s had the same hygienist for most of that. I trust them both implicitly.

They know and understand my “issues,� and when I start a conversation with, “I scoured the house for something to calm myself down, but all I could find was expired liquid Tylenol with codeine,� they don’t call Child Protective Services.

Is it any wonder I found fault immediate-

ly with New Lady? She was condescending, arrogant, and used medical terminology that of course I didn’t understand. She declared “You grind your teeth at night� and “Your gums are receding� without a hint of empathy. She also made it quite clear that I wasn’t doing a good enough job flossing.

How dare she!

But then an interesting thing happened. I looked at my watch and realized the cleaning had taken about half the time as usual.

I also wasn’t as stiff as I normally am, the aftermath of having clenched my fists and shoulders for 45 minutes of aggressive plaque removal. Thinking back, I hadn’t actually come out of my chair at all, a personal record. And, New Lady had performed an oral cancer exam, which old hygienist had never done. I couldn’t believe it, but in those few moments of quiet, I came to appreciate the outstanding job performed

by New Lady.

Lesson learned? Change doesn’t have to be bad, and, on occasion, change can even be good. I still hate the dentist though.

Commentary by Robert Herrington About a month ago, I informed my bosses – Steve Greenberg and Brian Kelly – that I had applied for another position. It wasn’t that I was looking to leave Current, but I had to at least try the opportunity.

It was a hard choice to leave journalism to become the communications manager for the City of Noblesville because it’s all I’ve done seen college. The past decade of covering Hamilton County has flown by and I’ll miss it. I’ve meet so many people, made a lot of friends and, thankfully, don’t have too many enemies.

Current Publishing has been good to me and my family and I can’t thank Steve and Brian enough for allowing me the privilege to continue covering Noblesville and Westfield. From day one they have allowed – and supported – me to make each edition my own with the mantra of “we only have 52 times to get it right a year.�

Sure the hours are long sometimes, but I truly loved covering my communities. It’s the people and places that make each similar yet unique. While I may be in a different role, I still plan to be out and about as much as I was – I also have a few stories saved up before my departure so you might see my byline from time to time.

There are many things I will miss, particularly those I won’t see as often and my peers at Current. It has truly been an honor to work for our readers and I can’t thank you enough for taking time out of your lives each week to read my words.

Ingredients: 1/4 cup butter, melted, 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon ground black pepper, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 egg, 1 tablespoon milk, 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, 1/2 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs, 1 cup crispy rice cereal, 3 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cut in half, 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a medium baking dish with 1/4 cup melted butter. In a bowl, mix the flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. In a separate bowl, beat together the egg and milk. In a third bowl, mix the cheese, bread crumbs, cereal. Dredge chicken pieces in the flour mixture, dip in the egg mixture, then press in the breadcrumb mixture to coat. Arrange in the prepared baking dish. Drizzle 2 tablespoons butter evenly over chicken. Bake 35 minutes in the preheated oven, or until coating is golden brown and chicken juices run clear.

Sports driving economic impact

By Robert Herrington Â&#x201C; a^QTac/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ This past weekend, Westfieldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Grand Park hosted 280 menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s soccer teams during a showcase with 380 games being GRAND PARK played; a menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s college soccer match between Indiana and Butler universities; and Westfield Youth Sports kicked off its recreational baseball season.

In addition to the increase in events at the sports campus, a third party economic impact study has found that Grand Park is delivering on its promise of economic development. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Grand Park was always intended to generate economic development and strengthen Westfieldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tax base. It seems to be doing just that,â&#x20AC;? said Mayor Andy Cook. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The plan is working really, really well.â&#x20AC;?

An economic impact report provided to city officials said the park has spurred $43,932,143 million in visitor spending, and also contributed $5.2 million in state and local tax revenues for 2014. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the first year we generated for the taxing

entities in this area over $5 million in terms of sales tax, gas tax, food and beverage tax, and inn keepers tax â&#x20AC;&#x201C; over $5 million,â&#x20AC;? Cook said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Given the fact that there was some tournament-type of play before, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s estimated that about 90 percent of those dollars ($43.9 million in visitor spending) are new dollars to this area. I say â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;this areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; because now what we have to do is begin to capture those dollars here in Westfield with the restaurants and hotels.â&#x20AC;?

The report, which was prepared by Phoenix, Ariz.-based Applied Economics, also cites the creation of 930 jobs because of the development of Grand Park. An estimated 906,796 visits were made to the park in 2014. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am very encouraged by this information,â&#x20AC;?

Cook said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We look forward to continued success in 2015 and beyond.â&#x20AC;?

Grand Park officially opened in June 2014. The 400-acre campus includes 31 grass and synthetic field sport fields and 26 baseball and softball diamonds. Future plans for the area surrounding the park include hotels, retail, restaurants, and mixed-use commercial development.

Ezra church: Saintly protection?

In 2015, members of a small church in Ezra, Syria, are celebrating 1,500 years of worshipping God in the same building. Some atTRAVEL tribute this extraordinary longevity to the contents of a special box.

Ezra lies about 50 miles south of Damascus along the western edge of the Hauran, a fertile plateau that played a role in the early development of agriculture. Today, Ezra is best known for its domed Church of St. George. The square buildingis made of basaltic rock and includes two inscribed octagonal structures, the inner one supporting the dome. An inscription between two crosses over the door says the Greek Orthodox Church was erected in 515 A.D. on the site of a pagan temple. Except for a nineteenth century reconstruction of its damaged dome, the building remains essentially unchanged since its erection.

Colorful icons and gold vigil lamps adorn the sanctuary, but the church’s most prized possession is a box, draped with a rich red cloth, resting behind the altar. A stone plaque leaning against the base of the box bears the iconic image of St. George killing a dragon. The inscription above

the entrance says the church was built to house the remains of St. George and church members believe remains of the martyred St. George are in the box. How much remains of him is not so clear.

A sarcophagus in the Church of St. George in Lod (Lydda), Israel, considered the birthplace of St. George, is said to hold his body. His head has been claimed by churches in both Greece and Italy.

The Ezra church has a distinction none of the other sites claiming St. George’s remains can match – it is one of the oldest continuously functioning church buildings in the world. Some attribute the church’s long survival to the admiration Syrian Muslims also have for St. George, the patron saint of not only England and Georgia but Palestine and Egypt. Members of Ezra’s Church of St. George look instead to their draped box, topped with tokens of gratitude. For them, St. George, whose feast day is April 23, has protected this ancient house of worship.

As a person that enjoys tutoring the English language to Hispanics in my area, I really try to teach good grammar. They use ‘duh’ for ‘the,’ ‘I seen’ for ‘I saw,’ ’di-dent’ for didn’t, and etc. I really cringe at the last one.

I was using the vocabulary lists on shortvowel-sounds. We came across ‘loll.’ I told the student it was ‘a period of calm in the midst of a storm or pause in music that is playing.’ Then got to the short-vowel U sounds, and saw ‘lull.’

Right away I knew my mistake. I realized I did not know the word ‘loll’. I got out the dictionary to compare the two words.

‘Loll’ is to hang out, dangle loosely, or droop. I was not familiar with this word.

I am not afraid to get out the dictionary, in front of my students, and admit ‘I don’t know.’

Mostly, I use it to get the Spanish definition so I can translate the English better to them. I am retired, so this is just a fun way to use my extra time. Have been doing this for 15 years. Keep up

“Loll” is actually a very interesting word. In addition to the definition you provided above, there is also “angle of loll,” which in sailing is the term for a ship that cannot remain upright stably.

More interesting for us landlubbers, though, is a unique use of “loll” you’ll only find in America: “lollygag.” The Oxford English Dictionaries estimate “loll” entered the language in late Middle English – around the 1600s. But “lollygag” doesn’t show up until the 1840s, and only in America.

If you’ve ever been accused of lollygagging, you’ll know what it means: to dawdle; to fool around; to waste time. You can see how it evolved from the intransitive verb form of “loll,” which means to sit, lie, or stand in a lazy, relaxed way.

We Americans love to play around with and modify the language – and that’s great. While you’re out there fighting the good fight, you may even come across the next Americanism that’ll sweep the continent. If you do … let me know!

Showerhead ideas and options Commentary by David Decker For many of us, our days begin or end with a nice, hot shower. With that much popularity and use, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no surprise that INDOORS showerhead designs have taken a leap forward. In the past, most showerheads were stationary and mounted at an angle on the wall.

But the days of the standard showerhead fixture are long gone, and in its place are new designs and innovations that add to the level of luxury and comfort in your home.

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re considering a redesign, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll first need to determine the amount of space you have to work with, and you can begin the process of choosing your showerhead (or showerheads).

Below is a list of popular showerhead options: Â&#x201C; Standard Wall Mount: Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a classic setup, but you can modernize it by selecting a showerhead with a moveable head or with different massage settings. Â&#x201C; Multiple Wall Mounts: Showers shared by two people could benefit from two showerheads with adjustable water pressure settings. Most of the time, dual showerheads are installed either facing each other or side-by-side. Â&#x201C; Handheld Showers: If you are installing dual showerheads, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll probably want to make sure that one (or both) of the showerheads is a handheld model, because they are so versatile and easy-to-use. They are also very handy for washing your hair, pets, or even rinsing the shower unit itself. Â&#x201C; Rain Showerheads: These models are designed to be affixed to the ceiling and give off a spa-like feeling. A rain showerhead provides a water stream that comes from directly overhead. Some rain showerheads are installed flush to the ceiling, which works well in shower spaces where the ceiling is lower or cannot accommodate a wall-mount head. Â&#x201C; Sliding Bar: This showerhead moves up

and down along a wall-mounted base to accommodate for height differences in users.

This is a great option for a bathroom shared among multiple family members. Â&#x201C; Jets and Body Sprays: For added luxury, you might choose to install jets or body sprays. You might think of these body sprays as Jacuzzis you stand up in. Heads or sprays are installed vertically on the walls to create a crisscross water pattern that delivers pressure wherever you choose. Some models can even be controlled by a remote control system.

Showerheads are rated using a system called a flow rate, or the number of gallons of water they spray per minute. Showerheads can use upwards of 8 gpm if they are a model with a heavy water usage system. However, you can seek out low-flow showerheads, which have been designed to save water in an environmentally friendly way. Low-flow models use only 2.5 gpm.

DISPATCHES Solving invasive plants â&#x20AC;&#x201C; If you love lilies and black-eyed Susans, but hate the way theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re taking over your garden and choking out other plants, hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what you can do: Step 1: Remove the pot bottom. Cut the bottom off a plastic pot or pail.

Step 2: Plant the pot. Set the container in the ground. Replant spreading plants inside it to hold in the roots.

Many plants multiply by dropping seeds and by sending out roots that establish new plants. A layer of mulch will prevent the seeds from taking root. But to stop those aggressive roots, you need a solid barrier. Replant the spreading plants inside underground â&#x20AC;&#x153;corrals.â&#x20AC;? The plastic corrals should extend at least 10 inches below ground to prevent the roots from sneaking under them. This trick wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work with plants such as strawberries or mint that spread above ground.
