Council creates riverfront license review committee

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com During its March 26 meeting, the Westfield City Council passed a resolution establishing CITY NEWS a Riverfront License Review Committee, 7-0. The committee, consisting of Economic Development Director Matt Skelton, a city council Skelton member and a citizen, will work together to determine which entities receive liquor licenses in the newly established Riverfront District in downtown Westfield and near the U.S. 31 and Ind. 32 interchange.

Council member Cindy Spoljaric suggested a different configuration to the committee, consisting of two council members, Skelton and a citizen from the community.

“I have been getting some comments from folks in the downtown. They’re kind of a little bit scared of the future and not knowing if they have any control,” Spoljaric said. “Maybe I was thinking personally it would make sense to have two councilors

with Matt, one with downtown jurisdiction and one at-large to have representation in that regard.”

The council did not add Spoljaric’s request to the resolution and instead went with three on the committee.

“The reason it’s structured this way is because the only other body we have that performs this (type of) function is also Spoljaric structured this way,” Skelton said. “The economic development permits are administered through the city as well, and that body is set up exactly the same way as this resolution.”

A council member and a citizen have not yet been named. The citizen will be appointed by the mayor.

“The change was not something I was willing to die on a hill or anything for. It was just something I thought would be helpful,” Spoljaric said.

Underground Railroad Run moved to April 15

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Because of the March 24 snowstorm, the Underground Railroad Run has been reschuduled for April 15. This UPDATE is the first time since the run’s founding 20 years ago the date has been changed because of weather. It also is the first year the run will take place on a Sunday.

The run was postponed because of safety concerns for runners and walkers.

Packet pick-up for the new date will be

from noon to 6 p.m. April 13 at Westfield High School, 18250 N. Union St., Door No. 5.

The run begins at 9 a.m. April 15. The walk begins at 9:30 a.m. The health fair also will be conducted.

The Underground Railroad Run is a fundraiser for the Westfield Education Foundation, which provides teacher grants and student scholarships within the Westfield Washington Schools district.

DISPATCHES LEO Club pancake breakfast — The Westfield High School LEO Club will hold its sixth annual pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. April 14 at the Westfield Lions Club clubhouse, 120 Jersey St. The all-you-can-eat breakfast includes different flavors of pancakes, donuts, sausage, juice, milk and coffee. The price is $6 for adults, $3 for children and children under 2 eat free. Funds raised will go to Open Doors of Washington Township.

Real estate statistics — The housing market in Westfield shifted to the buyer’s favor in terms of price. According to F.C. Tucker, the average sale price for homes in the city was $348,958 at $131.86 per square foot in February 2018. This sale price represented a 5.1 percent decrease from February 2017 while homes in the city sold in an average of 68 days, the same amount as this time last year.

College signings — Margaret Wentz, Gabrielle Dilick, Michael Koza, Dory Thompson and Elisabeth Fauntleroy all signed their letters of intent to play sports at college. Fauntleroy will play soccer at Taylor University. Thompson will play softball at Trine University. Koza will play basketball at Manchester University.

Dilick will run track and cross country at The Ohio State University. Wentz will play golf at The University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn.

Missions’ conference at Reach Church — A missions’ conference is slated for April 6-8 at Reach Church, 18686 Eagletown Rd. Speakers from 10 nations will share. A conference schedule and registration form is available at reachchurchindy.com. The event is free and open to the public.

Plant the City Blue registration now open — During this year’s floral competition, the City of Westfield announced the featured colors will be blue and white to show support for the Indianapolis Colts coming to the area in the summer. Since blue flowers are difficult to find, the color purple also will be allowed.

Naomi K. Ackerman, 89, of Westfield, died March 25 at Copper Trace in Westfield. She was born April 22, 1928 to Henry and Gertrude (Lawrence) Kaufman in La Porte, Ind. Naomi was a homemaker. She was a wonderfully Ackerman talented artist and a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Westfield.

She is survived by two daughters, Bette Ackerman and Jacqueline Lee Andrews; three granddaughters, Julie Andrews (John) Cox, Melissa (Randall) Santiano and Meghan (Chris) Hooke; and five great-grandchildren, Lanoria and Ian Santiano, Andrew and Alex Cox and Gabriel Hooke.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Ackerman.

Private services will be held.

School to host Day of Service

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com In preparation for breaking ground at its new Westfield location this summer, Highlands Latin School GIVING BACK will put on a Day of Service with the Westfield Parks and Recreation Dept. April 30.

Highlands Latin School serves students in grades K-12.

Treasurer Susan Wible said this is the first time the school has hosted an event like this, but it is not the first time it has given back to the community.

The school has always encouraged its students to give back and has conducted events such as serving Thanksgiving meals to Riley Hospital patients and doctors, shopping for local food pantries and more.

However, school officials wanted to host an event to introduce itself to a community it will directly serve in the near future.

“We feel this is adding to who we’ve been, but now we can direct it and help out the Westfield Parks Dept. in anticipation of us going there (in Westfield),” Wible said.

“Right now, the plan is to break ground as early as July.”

During the Day of Service, younger stu-

dents will plant flowers with their parents while older students paint signs on the Monon trail. Other service activities include picking up trash.

The school is looking for sponsorships, with levels at $200, $500 and $1,000. Funds raised will go to the construction of the new school.

“We are doing this for three different reasons,” Wible said. “It’s good for the kids, we want to introduce ourselves to Westfield and raise money for our school.”

Local Girl Scouts to build garden

By Noah Alatza news@currentinwestfield.com Westfield seventh-graders Claire Sandrick and Olivia Doan are on a mission to create a garden at the PROJECT Westfield Washington Public Library, 333 W. Hoover St. As the sole members of Girl Scout Troop 307, the girls are working toward a Silver Award, the highest award a Cadette Scout can earn. The honor is typically given to Scouts who complete a project in their community that has a lasting impact.

Doan said she hopes the project will get the community to pay more attention to the environment and nature.

“We want this to (have) an educational purpose,” Doan said. “To show people that this is what you can do and not just us, that other people can do it, too, in their backyard.”

Approved by the Library’s Board of Directors in late 2017, the monarch waystation and garden will house flowers and other vegetation with the goal of improving the declining population of pollinators, such as monarch butterflies.

Situated on the southside of the library, the project will encompass 2,000 square feet for the waystation and a rain garden to collect runoff from the building’s downspouts. The addition of a mulched path and benches also are planned.

The scouts already have raised nearly $2,500 of their $6,000 goal.

Doan said the library reached out to the Scouts after noticing a need to fill space on the backside of the property.

“My dad came up with the plan because he is an engineer,” she said. “He was thinking, in the back it’s shallow, so the rain garden would be the most suitable there.”

for the project. Its office, along with the City of Westfield’s Public Works Dept., must complete drainage work before planting can start.

Sandrick said planting and additional work should begin next month.

“We will have had our supplies and all donations by then, and most likely sign-up sheets for those who want to help us plant in the garden,” Sandrick said.

The waystation-and-garden project is expected to be completed by late spring.

Women running the railroad Commentary by David Heighway There has been a lot of local discussion about railroads lately, so, I thought I might show how the railroads HIGHLIGHTS offered 19th-century IN HISTORY women some non-traditional roles: telegraph operators and stations agents.

Agents had to sell tickets, operate the telegraph, hand off orders to train crews and handle mailbags. Since the latter two usually were done while the train was in motion, this required some skill.

Josephine “Josie” McCain was appointed the Hortonville postmaster in 1901 at the age of 20, just after she had graduated from Union High School in Westfield.

Bertha McVey (1874-1939) was hired as a telegraph operator at the Noblesville Midland station in 1891 when she was little more than a teenager.

Women were highly regarded (but paid less) as telegraph operators in the 1800s.

Since railroad stations often were the focus of community activity, some station agents saw some exciting times. Olive “Ollie” McChesney (1859-1929) was a young widow who was a station agent at Fishers

in 1880. It’s very possible she was at her job during the Battle of Mudsock, an explosion of violence in November 1881 that left one dead and 32 injured.

City encourages Scouts’ projects

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Chris McConnell, superintendent of parks, wants to remind Boy and Girl Scouts that the Westfield Parks and Recreation Dept. is an excellent GIVING BACK source for projects.

The department receives requests from scouts year-round.

Although the majority of requests come from Boy Scouts looking to complete a project to become Eagle Scouts, Girl Scouts can complete projects for accomplishments as well.

“We do have one just finished in Asa Bales,” McConnell said. “(The Scout) just completed a gaga pit where the playground in Asa Bales south used to be. We have two that are in the works. One young man is going to add to our Little Libraries throughout the community and is installing three.”

Though many times scouts come up with their own projects to meet requirements, the parks department does have a list of projects it can provide if a scout is unsure of which direction to take.

“Most of the time, the way it works out is they send me an email letting me know they are working on achieving their Eagle

Many projects have been completed throughout the parks for Scout accomplishments. The City of Westfield recently updated its website, with a specific tab for Scouts’ projects included. Project completion timeframes vary depending on if the Scout is working to be an Eagle Scout and how close the boy is to his 18th birthday.

Westfield Washington Schools to delay Wednesday classes by 30 minutes

By Noah Alatza • news@currentinwestfield.com Students and parents will have an extra half-hour before school on Wednesday mornings during next school year.

Westfield Washington Schools recently COVER STORY announced that start times for all of the district’s nine buildings will begin 30 minutes later for the 2018-19 academic year. The new time will allow for weekly professional development for WWS staff.

The Westfield Washington Board of School Trustees approved the measure at its March 13 meeting. Supt. Sherry Grate said the decision was made after the district reviewed input from key communicators, nearby school districts and the comGrate munity. Delayed-start discussions began when Grate was hired as superintendent in 2016.

Grate said during the past five to seven years, professional learning has taken a back seat.

“We are trying to take the steps forward to address needs of those teachers we need to invest in,” Grate said.

“The development of staff is essential, so we are providing the best practices to serve our students.”

But not everyone agrees.

Jenni Hoke, a parent of two, said the district did not ask for her input about the delayed schedule for next year and didn’t know of the initiative until it was announced.

Hoke said that although other schools like Guerin Catholic have embraced the Hoke delayed start, she’s concerned parents of younger children will be adversely affected.

“I think this will impact families with younger children that will need child care,” Hoke said. “This change may take some time to get used to.”

Grate said the district wants to hear parents’ concerns.

“We have had some parents on the calendar committee, and we had even considered putting a question on a survey, but (with) the feedback from the committee at that time, we knew it was not something that was best for staff and kids,” Grate said.

The delayed start is similar to that at other public schools, including Zionsville. At Carmel, the delayed start is every other Wednesday.

“The reason we’re looking at every week is because it provides consistency,” Grate said. “If it is a delayed start day, it also needs to be ongoing, consistent, purposeful, well-thought out and planned to have a positive impact.”

Start times for the rest of the school week during the 2018-19 school year will remain unchanged.

Grate said the time will be dedicated to a variety of training, including social emotional learning, readers’ and writers’ workshops and additional professional time.

The 30-minute delay for teacher instruction will be guided by a combination of leadership teams at each school, which will work alongside the district’s administrators.

Monon Trail Elementary School Principal Mike Hall said he believes teachers can greatly benefit from the opportunity of teacher instruction during delayed start times.

“As a school, we are constantly trying to build a culture where teachers have the opportunity to collaborate and work Hall toward a common goal,” he said. “We really value that opportunity of cross-grade level (collaboration) to improve student outcomes.”

Grate said parents who may not embrace the new initiative should take into account the district’s assessment.

“Just like with any change we put in place, we need to be able to step back and assess and evaluate the effectiveness of it,” Grate said. “If we have at any time found it’s not effective, we need to reconsider our plans and what adjustments to make, because at the end of the day, this is all about the professional development and training for staff that provides the best for our students.”

During several meetings with top administrators, Grate

said one of the daunting challenges facing WWS is the lack of consistency.

“There seems to be this gap for professional development to provide focus that is consistent with learning for our staff,” Grate said. “We want to be focused on alignment. We have six different elementary schools, and we want to make sure the experience they are having at one school, they have at all of our schools.”

Acknowledging the change may pose some parents with child care challenges, Grate said the before- and after-care program will provide child care at an affordable cost.

In the event of a two-hour delay, the professional development would be canceled.

Questions and answers Commentary by Terry Anker The sage once said, “God gave us two ears and one mouth so that we’d listen twice as much as we talk.” That may well have been the intention, but in practice, it rarely seems to work out that way. Too often, we share our points of view with little notion of the perspective of the folks with whom we are interacting. With age comes a bit of wisdom and, if we are lucky, a slowing of our belief that we “know” what the other person has in mind without taking the time to ask them. Yet, we can still seem eager to hear our own voice.

In conflict with others at work or at home, we feel compelled to air our grievance. We explain our take on the perceived or real transgression and demand contrition or even retribution. But, how do we know that our assumptions are valid? 9 In working to resolve disagreement or performance issues in our businesses, we work to lead with questions rather than accusations. Young managers are coached to ask two questions before making any statements. The first must be a sincere effort to avoid allegation. The second question is designed to require the interrogator to listen to the answer of the first. Moreover, active listening can clear one’s mind of his or her own bias. Too often we hold our breath while others speak, our mouths already full with our response even though the other speaker has yet to communicate.

What point can be found in a question if we rarely bother to listen to the answer?

It pays to coordinate estate planning Commentary by Jay Curts Most of us have life insurance, a retirement account and a house. Some of us have a will that we made LEGAL out years ago when we were worried about who would take care of our children if we died. All of us do not have to worry about the first $11.2 million of our estates being taxed by Uncle Sam. However, when was the last time you thought about how your asset ownership, beneficiary designations, wills and trusts coordinate for the benefit of your heirs? An effective method to achieve practical estate asset distribution simplicity is to coordinate the use of asset beneficiary designations with a separate trust agreement.

Life insurance and retirement accounts are assets traditionally structured for distribution upon the death of the owner by direct beneficiary designation. These beneficiary designations have priority over any other instruction you may have established in writing in a will or trust.

Under Indiana law, every asset is capable of ownership as a transfer on death (TOD)

asset. Real estate, bank accounts, stocks and investment accounts, cars and other tangible assets all may convey a TOD beneficiary designation, allowing the owner to name the beneficiary of each TOD asset separately, if desired.

Coordination of a TOD asset designation strategy may be applied to provide both direct and timely financial benefit to your heirs for some assets (for example, life insurance proceeds) and practical administration structure for other assets (for example, your residence) to allow your chosen representative to sell or distribute for your heirs to receive, either outright or in trust.

This structure is accomplished by establishing a revocable trust agreement designed to receive title to the owner’s designated TOD assets. Those assets are administered after your death by your chosen trustee.

I’d like to share a couple “fashion” incidents that have left me utterly confused about how someone my age is supposed to dress.

HUMOR I was with my youngest at Forever 21, a cheap clothing store aimed at, as the name implies, young adults. Let me repeat, I. Was. With. Her. Not the other way around. As usual, it was a zoo, so I sent her along to Pac Sun while I stood in line with her purchase, a denim jacket. I see a current student across the way and wave, immediately besieged by two opposing thoughts: “Yes! I’ll be known as the cool teacher who shops at Forever 21!” and “No! I’ll be called the old biddy who is seriously mistaken about her ability to rock a circa 1986 crop-top.”

Then, three days later, I find myself at Forever 21 Red, the rack version of the aforementioned, with my older daughter.

Again, I’m simply there in the chauffer capacity, not as an actual shopper. While standing in the dressing room awaiting my child’s “outfit” reveal, a girl emerges from behind her door in a baggy tee-shirt, highwaisted jeans and Top Gun aviators. She assesses herself in the mirror, notices me and asks for my opinion, adding, “I mean, you were alive in the ‘80s, right?” Ouch.

Yes, I came of age amidst big hair, puffed sleeves and Tom Cruise-inspired everything, all of which are apparently back in style. And no, I don’t want to appear out-oftouch with contemporary fashion trends.

But if I embrace the retro-’80s look for myself, won’t I be committing the even bigger fashion faux pas of dressing too young?

Gorging on social media buffet Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I have a friend who posts everything he eats on Facebook, or what could be called Feed Your Face Book.

HUMOR Joe photographs daytime snacks, late-night raids of the fridge, even the doughnuts he hid under the front seat of his car. He has uploaded 3,000 food pictures onto his Mac — including a few dozen Big Macs, I might add. He wants to create a new app called Snack Chat. It’s like Snapchat: The picture of the food disappears in a few seconds, as quickly as Joe’s lunch.

Unlike Joe, I’ve been uploading meals and then downloading them onto my shirts for more than 60 years. It’s not uncommon for people to ask me about certain food choices I have posted on my clothing for all my friends to see.

“Looks delicious, Dick. Wasn’t that the special at Olive Garden last week?”

“Been to a ball game, Dick? I recognize the mustard.”

Sharing your food intake encourages cheating, just like online dating. People sometimes fudge their age. And talking about fudge, what’s to stop a woman from

taking the Hershey bar she ate for lunch and Photoshopping it into a little plastic bag filled with baby carrots? Men can be just as deceiving. Sure, it looks like a $45 ribeye from St. Elmo, but it’s really just a cheap piece of beef off the grill at Golden Corral.

I eat a lot of meals in the car, so this would also create a bit of an inconvenience for me and jeopardize my already questionable driving record.

“Did I do something wrong, officer?”

“You suddenly pulled off onto the I-70 shoulder.”

“Sorry, I was just taking a photo of my fish sandwich.”

“Sir, this time I’m only going to issue a warning: Those are really high in sodium.”

I don’t think posting meal photos on Facebook will catch on here in Indiana.

Hoosiers are good people with high moral standards. They don’t want their kids looking at corn all day on the internet.

Understanding carpal tunnel Commentary by Dr. Joseph Hui Carpal tunnel is a problem that typically results in aching, numbness and tingling, generally affecting the YOUR HEALTH hand.

Risk factors such as obesity, female gender, diabetes, thyroid issues and pregnancy can lead to swelling of the median nerve. The anatomy of the wrist resembles a tunnel in which the nerve resides. When the nerve swells, it has nowhere to go, resulting in continual squeezing of the nerve.

Since the nerve is like a wire, the gold standard for its diagnosis involves measuring electrical activity across the nerve at various points using small needles in the arm. This is called an electromyography (EMG) test. Recently, non-invasive tests have been developed using ultrasound to measure the nerve.

Traditional non-surgical treatments include steroid injections, splinting and activity modification. Surgical nerve decompression, the gold standard treatment, involves cutting the ribbon that lies over the top of the tunnel.

alternative was developed. Using ultrasound guidance, a needle is first inserted adjacent to the nerve, and a combination of numbing medicine, normal saline and a small dose of cortisone is injected in order to bathe the nerve and push it away from the needle. Then, using the same poke, the needle is used as a cutting device, passing back and forth through the ribbon.

Charles Prince to guest conduct at Carmel Symphony Orchestra

CONCERTS “This is a wonderful, great program,” Prince said. “It’s really a meatand-potatoes (concert). I would think the audience would be thrilled with it.

There is really something for everyone. We are honoring our concertmaster.”

Prince The concert, set for 7:30 p.m. April 14 at The Palladium in the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, will feature concertmaster and violinist Larry Shapiro, who has been the CSO concertmaster since the 2005-06 season. Shapiro is a full-time professor of violin and artist-in-residence at Butler University.

“The end of the show we are doing the “Suite from Swan Lake,” which has an extended, beautiful violin solo,” Prince said.

“It’s Larry’s show but I’m there to help, and I’m enjoying it immensely. Larry is a legend in the classical music world, so I’m really honored and thrilled to be working with him in this capacity.”

Prince loved working in The Palladium.

“It’s a great concert hall,” Prince said.

“I first heard about it through Michael Feinstein, who is a dear friend of mine.

Michael is the person who made the connection to me with the Carmel Symphony.”

Feinstein is the artistic director for the Center for the Performing Arts. Prince became connected with Feinstein through Prince’s grandfather, Saul Chaplin, who won three Academy Awards for collaborating on the scores of “An American in Paris,” “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” and “West Side Story” Prince, who is the director of the Plainfield (N.J.) Symphony Orchestra, one of the oldest orchestras in New Jersey, first performed with the CSO for the Holiday Pops program in December 2016.

“I’m thrilled to be back,” said Prince, who is filling in for Janna Hymes, who had a previous commitment.

Prince recently performed with Anchorage Opera in Alaska “My manager tells me when I’m going and where I’m going,” Prince said. “I have traveled exclusively to Europe and lived 10 years in Vienna. I have a fairly strong connection to Austria and Germany. My first job was as a conductor in the former East

Germany in 1989 before the (Berlin) Wall went down.”

This will be the final concert of the 2017-18 season and the final performance with Alan Davis serving as CSO president and CEO. Davis will retire in September.

“He’s a kindred spirit so I’m very sad that he’ll be leaving the organization, but I know he’s looking forward to his new life,” said Prince, who developed a friendship with Davis.

CARMEL SYMPHONY LEAGUE EVENT SET The Carmel Symphony League will host its annual Spring Luncheon at 11 a.m. April 10 at Ritz Charles in Carmel. Tickets are $45.

Proceeds benefit the CSO education programs that work to foster the musical talent and education of young artists, including the Family Fun! Concert and the annual Young Artists Competition. This year’s luncheon entertainment will be provided

by Cheryl Wyatt, a former lead vocalist with the United States Air Force. She has performed with the Carmel Community Players and is a regular vocalist for St. Luke’s United Methodist Contemporary Worship Service.

“The symphony is extraordinarily lucky to have this group to help support us,” Alan Davis, CSO president and CEO, stated in a release. “Their work is invaluable and their dedication much appreciated.”

A traditional favorite are the gift baskets created by League members, which will be bid on by luncheon attendees. In addition, this year the League will be selling “Music Matters” T-shirts and sweatshirts ($10 for T-shirts and $15 for sweatshirts).

Songbook Foundation undergoes Museum Assessment Program editorial@youarecurrent.com The American Alliance of Museums recently selected the Great American Songbook Foundation to participate in its Museum Assessment Program, which helps organizations strengthen their operations and plan for the future through a process of professionally in email guided self-study and on-site consultation.

The Songbook Foundation maintains an exhibition gallery and a vast historical archive at the affiliated Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. The Foundation’s ultimate goal is to establish a Great American Songbook Hall of Fame Museum, similar to the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame and other such institutions.

According to a news release, the MAP Organizational Assessment will guide the staff, board of directors and other stakeholders in analyzing strengths and weaknesses and developing a roadmap for sustainability and advancement.

Thinking pink this spring Commentary by Elizabeth Morse I’m not sure if it’s because I am spending part of April in Paris. Maybe it’s this crummy weather still hangWINEderlust ing around? Whatever the reason, all I can think is pink! I’m suggesting rosé wines today. They are beautiful, food-friendly wines that are typically dry. Rosé is made from a variety of grapes. After the grapes are squished, dark-colored grape skins are allowed to hang out for a bit in the juice.

Basically, the dark skins stain the juice and create lovely pink hues.

Rosé shouldn’t be relegated to warm weather. Nope, it is an excellent choice year-round. Here are my current faves, all on the dry side of the spectrum: Gerard Bertrand Languedoc ‘Cote des Roses’ Rosé, France. At approximately $15 per bottle, this is a value-priced choice.

A tangy wine that seems like a cross between orange-cream and cranberry. It smells like peach and is a beautiful shade

of pale pink.

For just a few bucks more ($19), try Campuget 1753 Rosé. This is an unusual grape juice blend of 90 percent Syrah and 10 percent Vermentino. It’s bigger as rosé goes, but the richness is lively and attractive.

With just a little citrus flavor, what mainly stands out is a more traditional strawberry flavor. A great choice with barbecue.

The splurge today goes to a California wine, Robert Sinskey Rosé of Pinot Noir, Carneros. A vintner known for splendid Cabernet Franc delivers this pale-colored berry bomb. Tons of juicy, bright fruit and great acid make this bottle a winner for sipping and pairing, approximately $32.

Cairo’s historic synagogue Commentary by Don Knebel Ben Ezra Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in Egypt, located among churches in Coptic Cairo, an ancient area TRAVEL just east of the Nile River. Although conflicting stories explain its unusual location, it was the source of priceless historical documents.

According to one tradition, the synagogue marks the spot where the Prophet Jeremiah assembled Jewish exiles after Babylon had destroyed their Temple in Jerusalem in the sixth century B.C., with some claiming Jeremiah is buried nearby. Others claim the synagogue is located where pharaoh’s daughter discovered the infant Moses in a basket. Nineteenth-century writers concluded the synagogue was once a church located where Mary bathed the infant Jesus during the holy family’s flight to Egypt. According to this account, now largely discredited, the church was forced

to sell its building in the ninth century when it could no longer afford taxes imposed by Muslim rulers.

Whatever the truth of any of these claims, what is known is that the synagogue is named for Jerusalem’s Rabbi Ben Ezra, who restored an earlier synagogue on the site in the 12th century.
