Hamilton County plans Facebook Live for COVID-19 — The Hamilton County Commissioners, the Hamilton County Health Dept. and Hamilton County Emergency Management will conduct a Facebook Live event to help educate citizens and employees about COVID-19. Westfield grads serve as interns — Alexandria Burch is serving as an intern for the Indiana Senate Majority Caucus during the 2020 legislative session. Burch graduated from Westfield High School and is a junior at Ball State University studying business administration. As a Secretary of the Senate intern for the Senate Majority Caucus, Burch conducts legal and policy research, files legislative documents and creates legislative calendars. Abigail Schmidter is serving as an intern for the Indiana Senate Majority Caucus during the 2020 legislative session as well. She graduated from Westfield High School and is a sophomore at Purdue University studying corporate communications with minors in German and management. As a press secretary intern, Schmidter writes news releases, columns and e-newsletters and helps correspond with members of the media.

Woman fundraises for baby box

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Barb Cook has a heart for the innocent.

That’s why the Westfield resident is raising funds to install a Safe Haven Baby Box in one of the Westfield Fire FUNDRAISER Dept. stations.

“Their mission statement is to prevent illegal abandonment of newborns by raising awareness and offering a 24-hour hotline for mothers in crisis and offering a last-resort surrender option for women, which is the baby box,” Cook said. “I started thinking about this, and this is something great for the community to get behind so they can play a proactive role in saving the lives of children.”

Cook said every community should install a baby box but she hopes they don’t need to be used.

“This provides safety for the baby, but it’s also something tangible where the Safe Haven law is not,” Cook said. “This is something people can see in the community, and that allows for further education about it.”

Although Cook said Safe Haven encourages face-to-face surrenders, the box provides

a safe way for babies to be anonymously surrendered.

There are 21 active baby boxes in Indiana.

In addition, 50 communities in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Arkansas raising funds to install boxes. Cook wants to raise $16,000.

“This isn’t a government project but a community project,” she said.

Cook’s goal is to raise the funds by the end of 2020.

Real estate statistics — Westfield home prices continued their upward climb in February 2020, while spending fewer days on the market. According to F.C. Tucker Company, the average sale price for Westfield homes in February 2020 was $347,005, a 3.1 percent increase from this time last year.

Homes in Westfield also sold more quickly than February 2019, leaving the market 19.7 percent faster. The average price per square foot for a Westfield home also increased 1.1 percent, to $135.77, compared to February 2019.

OBITUARY Alyn G. Bernell, 89, of Carmel, passed away March 2, 2020. The son of Anthony G. and Marie Morasca Bernell, he grew up in Oil City, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Grove City College in 1952.Alyn was an adventurer and outdoorsman who held a pilot’s license for several decades. He loved boating, traveling and riding his on/off road motorcycle. A stint in the U.S. Army brought him to Indiana in the 1950s. His career would be with Scott Paper Co., working in both sales and management. Alyn married Shirley Jones, a fellow Pennsylvanian, in 1956. They remained together 63 years.

After he retired in the early 1990s, Alyn was active in the Carmel Sertoma and Westfield Lions Clubs, and took an interest in community affairs in Hamilton County, particularly in his adopted home town of Westfield. His passion for outdoor activities led to his participation in the Hamilton County Alternate Transportation Taskforce (HCAT) and the Carmel Monon Greenway

He even rode the same stretch of the trail on his motorcycle in order to know thoroughly what plans had to be made to bring the greenway project to fruition. Alyn was named The Noblesville Ledger’s Citizen of the Year in 1996. In 2009, Westfield dedicated the first extension of the Monon Trail into the city to him, naming it “The Alyn Bernell Mile”.In addition to his wife, Shirley, Alyn is survived by his extended family and countless friends, who will miss his kindness, humility and sense of humor. By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Estridge Development Management is proposing 15 townhomes on nearly 1.3 acres of land along the Monon FUNDRAISER Trail on Carmel’s northern border near Westfield city limits.

According to plans filed with the City of Carmel, the project site is south of 146th Street, west of Rolling Hill Drive and east of Rohrer Road and the Monon Trail. The townhomes are anticipated to cost $400,000 to $500,000 each and include a two-car garage.

Estridge is asking the Carmel Plan Commission to rezone the property from residential zoning to a planned unit development. The commission is scheduled to discuss the proposal at 6 p.m. March 17 at Carmel City Hall.

The city’s comprehensive plan designates the site as suburban residential zoning, but the petitioner believes a rezoning makes sense because the proposed project is adjacent to 146th Street – one of the area’s

Impact of COVID-19 remains unclear

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com With the spread of the coronavirus leading to unprecedented disruptions throughout the U.S., including a TOURISM 30-day ban on travel from Europe and suspension of the NBA season, tourism officials in Hamilton County are finding it difficult to predict the impact on local hotels and events.

Hamilton County Tourism Inc. President and CEO Brenda Myers said industry trends — such as decreased business travel — can often foreshadow economic declines. Although the county is seeing a drop in corporate visitors, Myers isn’t sure what it means for the future of county tourism.

“This one’s different,” Myers said. “I don’t want to be a pessimist, but I don’t want to be an optimist. We are literally waiting and seeing.”

In the past month, Myers said hotel room stays in Hamilton County were down compared to this time last year on weekdays but were up on weekends. She said the trend indicates that corporate travel has decreased while other visitors have kept their plans.

Amid the concern, there may be a silver lining for local tourism.

“We did better in the Recession because people were not taking more expensive trips. They were taking smaller family trips,” Myers said. “This (situation) is different, so we really don’t know what’s going to happen on the leisure travel side.”

As of March 11, 10 COVID-19 cases had been confirmed in Indiana, with two in Hendricks County and one each in Noble, Adams, Howard, Boone, Marion and Johnson counties.

Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 938 cases and 29 deaths in 38 states and the District of Columbia.

Councilor, developer consider future development concerns, standards

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com When a largely new Westfield City Council was elected in November 2019, some residents and developers expressed concern that development might slow down because of new members on the council.

Three months into his term, Willis said development likely won’t slow down.

“We’ve had a lot of conversations as a council about where we want to go, and I don’t think anyone on the new council wants to shut anything down, especially on the commercial side,” Willis said. “We want to make sure Westfield remains open for businesses to diversify our tax base and continue to drive commercial development to the community.”

Although Willis said the council doesn’t plan to shutter commercial development, there may be a pushback on developer requests for tax increment financing. On the residential side, Willis said he doesn’t think the city is “closed for business.”

“I think all of us, quite frankly, will be very detailed on the types of residential development that comes to Westfield, and that the project makes sense with the right kinds of housing and standards around architectural design so it isn’t all cookie-cutter,” Willis said. “I don’t think we will see

any drastic Draconian changes to our process. There may be some disagreement about what those good architectural standards mean.”

Willis also wants to ensure housing options have a variety of price points.

“If all we have is $700,000 homes, that makes it difficult for businesses to come here because of having a worker base in the community,” he said.

Birch Dalton, owner of EdgeRock Development in Westfield, said some developers may have rushed for their projects to appear before the previous city council but insists he didn’t do that.

One of Dalton’s projects, the Links planned unit development, which includes a go-kart track, a driving school, a jump park and acreage for a digital planetarium, bridged the previous and new councils.

“Deliberately, I did not rush (my projects) to beat the new people,” Dalton said. “I have another one coming out that is much more complex than Links that I can assure you the new council and (Advisory Plan Commission) will go over it with a fine-toothed comb. I deliberately waited on that one because of the complexity of it and it couldn’t be rushed.”

Dalton plans to file for his new development in April or May. He said he hasn’t observed any dramatic changes from the council.

“There was a concern from the development community that there was going to be a radical change, and you saw that in the flood of filings last year before the changeover,” Dalton said. “EdgeRock did not see that same fear. While obviously it was a possibility, in looking at today’s council

and today’s (Advisory Plan Commission), I see a continuation of smart, governmental leaders.

“It may be the case that they look a little harder and a little longer as they get acclimated to the process and to the plan, but I don’t see an adversarial position on anything.”

CONCERN FOR RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT Although local developers aren’t concerned about commercial development slowing down with several new members on the Westfield City Council, developer Birch Dalton said residential development may encounter some hurdles.

“I think commercial development was never in doubt.

Now, residential may be another story,” Dalton said. “I’m not a residential developer, so I’m not as in-tune to the residential side, but my belief is having dissenting opinions or ideas is not a bad thing (on city council) as long as they are coming to a consensus in a civil way.”

Dalton said his biggest concern regarding commercial development is what the council approves for future projects along Ind. 32.

“We built high-quality buildings (along Ind. 32), and I hope the council and APC really are restrictive all the way out past Ditch Road on what’s built because I think that’s going to be our permanent Main and Main,” he said.

Travis May, a local residential developer, did not respond to a request for comment.

Commentary by Terry Anker If on the publisher list for a local newspaper, expect to receive scores of unsolicited press releases, important news announcements and, unfortunately, hostile perspective. Most is harmless enough, including urgings to sell books, print interviews and encourage consultancy for a limitless array of previously unknown “national experts.” Usually advanced by a PR firm, the author/ speaker/expert may not be proficient in the field touted but has mastered the art of mass manipulation.

Sadly, about half of these “urgent” messages that newspapers are encouraged to print are intentionally polarizing opinion. The headlines scream, “All of my ethnic group believes X – and all of the other ethnic groups believe Y.” Well, maybe. “The virus will kill us all.” “The virus is an attack by China.” “The virus is as fake as the moon landing.” If so many folks didn’t buy into the extreme rhetoric, it would all be entertaining enough.

The most enjoyable of them assert some survey superiority. They measure habits, choices and peccadillos garnering, with broad speculation, our natures.

Via Haley, who it seems knows the intended recipient well absent of any former communication, at rnpublicrelationsgroup reports that Indiana is the 29th-heaviest drinking state in America.

That puts us at the 42nd percentile – a solid fail to Haley. About half of us drink.

A third binge-drink, consuming per-capita the 18th percentile and are catching up at 88th of new drinkers and 66th in craft breweries. Who knows if any of it is true. However, we are reminded to use caution. Indiana is not the biggest drinking state, or the least. It is not the most likely for arrest, nor does it have the highest death rate. Still, is it worth it? There is much life to live, and prisons — or, for that matter — cemeteries, are not on this paper’s delivery route.

Alarmed by outdated clock Commentary by Danielle Wilson I’m mad as heck and I’m not going to take it anymore! Kidding. It’s more like, I’m mildly frustrated and I’m going to HUMOR write about it.

Last week while adjusting my clocks for the stupid “spring forward,” I renewed a vow to get rid of the time monstrosity that rests on my bedside table. Once the latest and greatest technology of the ’90s, my “alarm clock” is now sorely outdated. Although it includes AM/FM, three wake-up settings and, the pièce de résistance, an honest-to-God CD player, I can no longer justify its presence.

The main problem is that the button to move time forward is broken, so whenever I want to reset the alarm for later, I have to go backward a full 23 hours. And that hurts my fingers, so I just give up and use my phone.

Which begs the question: “Why don’t you always use your phone (idiot)?”

Honestly, there are two reasons. The first

is practical: I love the warm ambient glow that lets me know how long I haven’t been sleeping and keeps me from running into the TV on my way to the bathroom. True, my phone could function similarly, but I’d have to navigate the unlocking process without my glasses amid a nocturnal fog, which would somewhat defeat the purpose.

The second, and perhaps more significant, reason is that this clock was a wedding gift that has literally been with me half of my life. One husband, two apartments, three houses, four babies ... we’ve experienced a lot of living together. I can’t simply throw her away.

But maybe it’s time.

Editor, I am writing to you today because I am thrilled to see Hamilton County Commissioner Mark Heirbrandt will be the Republican nominee in November 2020.

I have no doubts that he will win reelection and will continue to lead Hamilton County responsibly, with taxpayers in mind.

Hamilton County is flourishing under the leadership of people like Mark. Since becoming commissioner, he has always focused on the needs and desires of those within the county. He has been proactive in enhancing training for firefighters and police officers and has always worked to stay educated on the latest technology in the public safety sphere.

Mark also is constantly working to assess our traffic needs for the future.

Already, construction is beginning on Ind. 37 to attend to traffic concerns.

Once construction is finished, the corridor will become an economic hub and reduce commutes. He continues to prepare our county for a growing population and successful future.

I will continue to give Mark my unwavering support as he campaigns for reelection, and urge you to do the same.

The need for music Editor, More than 2.1 million students in the U.S. are denied performing arts programs.

Indiana’s schools are contributing to this due to the $16.9 million in state education funding taken from IPS systems. Students that already are battling anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts need an outlet such as music.

Without music, students will have lower confidence/esteem levels and more stress.

Hopefully, a new president will appoint him to a position where he can put to use his talent in speaking several languages and his military experience. His issues are those we need to address in the coming year or more: abolishing the Electoral College system of electing presidents in which the popular vote winner has not been elected five times in our history. Twice in this new century alone the Electoral College has given the presidency to the non-popular vote winner and instead given us one president who have led the nation into trillion-dollar debts, two unnecessary wars and the recession. The other has shown total incompetence in dealing with a virus pandemic. Mayor Pete also came out for Automatic Voter registration and very importantly abolishing the U.S. Senate filibuster rule which without doing, will block passage of vital legislation, just at the time we will need action to combat the virus pandemic and fast-approaching economic recession.

Here is Part 2 of looking back at some of my favorite funny segments during my last 40 years in TV. Bruised ego HUMOR Dick the Bruiser loved the camera. When I asked him to be on my show, he said he was up for anything. However, he was never up before 11 a.m. My interview segments in those days started live at 5:30 a.m., so I told Bruiser I was going to knock on his door and that his wife should answer and tell me he was still sleeping. I’d tell her to wake him, but she would warn me that it could put me in serious jeopardy.

In the next segment, Bruiser appears at the door, pretending I woke him. This was all set up, although he really did look ticked.

He put me in a headlock, banged my noggin into the grill and then grabbed the back of my pants and launched me into his pool.

That episode created quite a splash. It can be found on YouTube.

Hounded to death I received a call from a man wanting to show how his dogs could track a fox scent.

I asked if my beagle, Barney, could participate. Prior to the show, an artificial fox scent was spread along the ground leading to a tree. I also had taken a giant beef salami and rubbed it along the ground, but this path led to this meaty treat on a picnic table far from the hounds’ ultimate desti-

nation. Minutes later, the coon dogs were barking up the right tree, while Barney was enjoying a nice kosher meal.

Sales force Comedian Soupy Sales and I hosted a few shows together in New York. Years later, he was booked at an Indy comedy club, so I scheduled him as a guest on my morning WISH-TV segment. I opened the on-site broadcast from his hotel lobby, where I introduced that the one-and-only Soupy Sales was rumored to be in the building. The elevator door opened, and out walked Soupy.

“Hello,” I said. “Did you hear that Soupy Sales is staying here?”

“I am Soupy Sales,” he said, faking his annoyance. I persisted …

“No, really! Soupy Sales is staying at this very hotel.”

“For the last time, I am Soupy Sales.”

Next followed the rehearsed zinger.

“Wow, you sure got older!” I said.

On cue, a waiter walked by with a pie.

Soupy grabbed the pie off the tray and deposited it right in my face.

The Indiana State Dept. of Health reported 10 positive cases of the new coronavirus less than a week after it was COVID-19 first confirmed in the state earlier this month.

As of press time, at least 10 Indiana residents have tested presumptive positive for COVID-19, a disease stemming from the new coronavirus. The six residents are from Adams, Boone, Hendricks, Howard, Johnson, Marion and Noble counties. So far, the ISDH reports that every case has had a connection to a previous case.

The Indiana State Dept. of Health has created a dashboard providing live statistics tracking the disease in the state, including the total number of positive cases and the number of people tested so far. The dashboard can be found at in.gov/isdh/28470. htm.

The dashboard will be updated daily as more cases are expected.

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb and the ISDH announced the first positive case of a new coronavirus in Indiana on March 6, and Holcomb issued a public health emergency declaration in conjunction with the announcement.

The first Hoosier diagnosed with COVID-19 is a Marion County resident who previously traveled to Boston, according to the ISDH. Massachusetts had reported seven positive cases of the new coronavirus at the time of the announcement.

“With the help of our federal, state and local partners, Indiana is responding to this case as we have planned and prepared for weeks,” Holcomb stated.

The ISDH is working closely with county health departments, hospitals and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

to ensure all close contacts of patients are identified and monitored — including immediate family, coworkers and anyone who may have had close interactions — and that all infection-control protocols are followed.

Patients that test positive for the new virus will remain in isolation for 14 days — the time at which symptoms of the disease have been reported to wane — and will not be released until specimens taken two consecutive days at the end of that period test negative for COVID-19, according to the ISDH. “The state health department has been preparing for weeks to ensure that we have the resources and systems in place to limit or prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Indiana,” Indiana State Health Commissioner Kris Box stated. “Given the global spread of this illness, the question was never if Indiana would have a case, but when it would arrive.”

While health officials try to mitigate the community spread of the disease, testing remains limited to the state level. Counties do not yet have testing kits of their own.

As of press time, the state has tested 40 Indiana residents.

The risk posed by the disease, which as of press time has afflicted 120,000 people and caused 4,000 deaths worldwide, has led many companies and schools to take preventative measures to stop the spread.

Indiana and Purdue universities have suspended in-person classes for the first two weeks after their spring breaks, switching to online courses. Several companies, including Eli Lilly, have asked employees to work from home in all but specific circumstances. Large public gatherings across the U.S. have been postponed or canceled.

Hoosier Sister is ready for something new this year. Besides its nationwide travel shows and local pop-up shops, the home décor business is adding inDESIGN terior decorating and design seminars to its services.

Carmel siblings Heidi Heldt and Gretchen Harter co-founded the business seven years ago. It began as a small antique shop and grew into a full-service home décor destination.

“The business came out of a love for design and decorating,” Heldt said. “When we were children, our mother would let us redo our rooms and let us be creative, and that transferred into college and our first homes.

We realized that we could turn it into something that hopefully people would like.”

In 2018, Hoosier Sister introduced pop-up shops in Zionsville, and this year the sisters will stage a pop-up shop next to Java

House at Clay Terrace Mall. The first will run through March 15. The second will run from May 4 to May 9.

On March 11, the sisters will lead a ticketed design seminar from 7 to 9 p.m. They will showcase one type of design, deconstruct it and rebuild another from scratch. Guests also will have access to an early-bird shopping experience with Hoosier Sister’s spring collection.

“What we try to explain to people is your home should look collected and designed over time, and use pieces that you love, things that mean something to you, collections,” Heldt said. “Then, incorporate, whether it be a vintage piece or a new item, and then (we’ll show) how to put that all together.”

The seminars will touch on tablescapes, centerpieces, bookcases, plants and mantels. Heldt said it’s all about transitioning the home from winter to spring in a fresh way with natural materials and live plants.

Group opts for comedic show ‘Shrek The Musical’

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com After performing “Les Misérables” and “The Great Gatsby” last year, Westfield High School Performing Arts was ready for something comedic.

MUSICAL “Shrek The Musical” was deemed a good fit.

“We wanted it to be fun and family oriented and comedy-centric this year,” said Lance Grubb, WHS’s assistant theater director and French teacher. “We are trying to reach more elementary school kids to get them involved in theater, and we thought ‘Shrek’ would be a good way to build that bridge.”

The musical follows the Broadway version of the show.

“It’s pretty much the same as the original, and it follows the cinematic production pretty closely, but it’s a little more in-depth on the characters’ lives,” Grubb said.

Senior Anya Burke plays Fiona in the production, set for March 19 to 21.

“I love it because it’s a comedy, and last year we did really emotional shows, so it’s fun this year to do something completely different,” she said. “I like Fiona because she’s very quirky and I’m a really quirky person, so it’s fun to play someone I can

relate to a little bit.

“I’ve never played a quirky person before, so it’s a fun experience to grow from.”

The show is Burke’s fourth at WHS and 29th overall. She’s applying to colleges to major in musical theater.

Senior Tyler Jeffries, who is appearing in his eighth production, plays Shrek.

“The show has so many diverse characters and they’re all different,” he said. “It’s an overall fun production to be a part of.”

Senior Rachel Lisle is part of the technical crew. She’s in charge of painting and colors.

“It’s fun because it’s in a fantasy world, so you can do fun things with colors and weird sets you wouldn’t normally see,” said Lisle, who wants to become an industrial designer. “For industrial design, we have to work a lot with our hands and have knowledge of how things are put together to design projects, so designing these big sets helps get in the mindset of, ‘How does this work?’ and ‘What does this mean?’”

Senior Natalie Penry is the dance captain.

She learns the dances and works with the choreographer to make sure the dances are performed correctly.

Jeffries said participating in high school productions can be beneficial even for students who aren’t planning to pursue theater.

“This teaches you a lot of communication skills and how to work with other people, and it gives you a look into what it’s like to work with people and time-management and negotiating with everyone,” he said.

For Burke, experience is an important takeaway.

“At college auditions, we have an hour or two dance sessions, and with being in shows, I haven’t been able to keep up with dance, but it helps me keep up with the techniques,” she said. “It keeps you on your toes and helps you gain experience.”

“Shrek The Musical” will be performed at 7 p.m. March 19 and 20 and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Westfield Playhouse takes on ‘A Raisin in the Sun’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Nancy Lafferty has waited a long time for her opportunity to direct “A Raisin in the Sun.” “It’s a play that I read many PLAY years ago as a college student in the ‘70s and I thought this is a masterpiece,” said Lafferty, a McCordsville resident. “I watched the Sidney Poitier movie then and have watched the other movies. There are four. They’re each different.”

Main Street Productions’ production of the powerful play is set from March 20 to April 5 at Westfield Playhouse.

Lafferty said it is always listed in the top 10 most important plays. The story centers on a black family that wants a better life away from the city but meets opposition from their potential new white neighbors.

“It’s a profound story that sadly is still applicable today,” she said.

The 1959 Broadway play was written by Lorraine Hansberry, the first African American female author to have a play on Broadway. Hansberry, who died at age 34 in 1965, based it on her own family’s experiences fighting segregation.

Gabrielle Patterson plays Mama, the Younger family matriarch. All the performers playing Younger family members are from Indianapolis.

“I’ve been doing community theater for a little while, but I’m mostly known as a poet,” Patterson said.

Patterson has never seen a movie or play version of the show.

“I know the notable people who have played this role from Esther Rolle to Phylicia Rashad and I didn’t want it to be anything but my own,” she said. “My version of Mama is very different from everyone else.”

Patterson said the play’s issues are still relevant.

“Housing discrimination and families trying to make ends meet is absolutely something we are still dealing with,” she said.

De`Jon Marshall-Fisher, who plays Walter, read the play in eighth grade. He graduated from Indiana State University in 2012 with a theater degree.

“I haven’t done a production in eight years, and when I saw they were doing “Raisin in the Sun,’ I had to do it because I love Walter,” he said. “When I was in eighth grade, the part my teacher always had me read for was Walter. This is such an iconic role.

Andrea Hardy, who plays Walter’s wife, Ruth, said Warren Central High School performed the play the year after she graduated, so she missed that opportunity to be in it.

“I’m cool, calm and very collected and don’t get easily frustrated,” Hardy said. “So, it’s a challenge to show that in a particular scene in this production.”

Jeff Maess plays Karl Lindner, who tries to pay the family not to move into the neighborhood.

“He’s an unlikeable character, but in his mind he’s perfectly likable,” Maess said.

Adult Easter egg hunt set

“The kids have their Easter eggs, so why shouldn’t adults have theirs?” Blackhawk Winery owner Deb Miller said.

This will be the fifth year for the event.

The winery will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“Anyone can come out when the grounds are open, listen to music, meet the Easter bunny, drink some wine and check out the food trucks over the course of the whole day,” Miller said.

A stupa in the mountains Commentary by Don Knebel One of the most impressive Buddhist structures in the United States is in the picturesque foothills of the Rocky TRAVEL Mountains, about 45 miles northwest of Fort Collins, Colo.

In 1959, a 21-year-old Buddhist named Chögyam Trungpa fled Tibet and eventually ended up in the United States, where he became famous for his Shambhala Vision, in which people of any religion can seek enlightenment. In 1974, he founded Naropa University in Boulder, Colo., the first accredited Buddhist university in the United States. He gained a large number of devotees, including beat poet Allen Ginsburg. Before he died in 1987, Chögyam Trungpa founded a number of meditation centers, including one on 552 acres near Red Feather Lakes, Colo., now known as the Shambhala Mountain Center.

Upon Chögyam Trungpa’s death at age 48, his followers decided to honor his memory with a stupa, a mound-like structure originally designed to hold relics of the Buddha.

The result was a 108-foot-tall stupa that has become the centerpiece of the Shambhala

Mountain Center. The Great Stupa of Dharmakaya Which Liberates Upon Seeing was consecrated in 2001 after 14 years of construction, at a cost of $2.7 million. The overall shape of the three-level stupa, formed from concrete reportedly designed to last 1,000 years, suggests a crowned Buddha, meditating while sitting on a throne. Unlike most stupas, the lower section, which includes a 20-foot-tall statue of a seated Buddha, is open to the public. At the heart of the golden statue is the entire skull and part of the spine of Chögyam Trungpa, who was cremated. Upper sections, closed to the public, contain other representations of the Buddha and remains of important Buddhist teachers. The Shambhala Mountain Center, which includes about 35,000 square feet of space for lodging, eating and meditation, is a popular location for spiritual retreats.

Increasingly, I’ve heard people throwing around “there is” or GRAMMAR GUY “there’s” when they ought to say, “there are.” Does this matter? Of course! After all, singular subjects need singular verbs; likewise, plural subjects get plural verbs.

This is called subject-verb agreement.

However, with a subject like “there,” how do we know if the subject is singular or plural? Let’s use an example: There is/ are many ways to get to this afternoon’s drum circle.

But, wait a second: “There” can’t possibly be the subject, can it? No, it’s not.

In fact, the subject is “ways,” although it’s not clear when we’re beginning the sentence.

Think of it this way: There are = pirates.

Pirates say, “Arrrrr!” There is = snake. A snake says, “Hssss!” One snake is singular. Multiple pirates are plural. Let’s substitute “there” with “snake” and then

“pirates” into our sentence: Snake is many ways to get to this afternoon’s drum circle. Pirates are many ways to get to this afternoon’s drum circle. Although they both sound ridiculous, “pirates” sounds better.

Here’s another way to figure out which verb to take -- turn it into a question. Is/ are there many ways to get to this afternoon’s drum circle?

In this case, you would rightly say, “Are there many ways to get to this afternoon’s drum circle?”

A snake (which goes hssss!) is singular.

Pirates (who go arrrr!) are plural. There is = singular. There are = plural. In a battle between one snake and a crew of pirates, I’d put my doubloons on the pirates; one snake couldn’t possibly take a whole pirate posse down. Pirates beat snakes.

There’s plenty of room for argument here.

The Ranch at West Clay is seeking a knowledgeable and experienced barn manager/ equine handler to care for 4 horses and other animals that may be added. The position available requires the barn manager to manage the facility, do minor barn and grounds repairs/maintenance, have a working knowledge of equine health care and first aid, be proficient in western riding and the training of safe trail horses, be able to rotate and seed pastures as needed, order hay feed and bedding, schedule the vet and farrier, and any other tasks that may arise at a small private horse barn.
