Parks Dept. sees hike in attendance

news@currentinwestfield.com The Westfield Parks and Recreation Dept. released its fourth city news quarter report Jan. 21, highlighting participation in the fall and winter events.

The report showed increased attendance for Fireside Tales and Westfield in Lights, as well as noting the expansion of the Monon Trail.

“I’m very proud of our volunteers and staff who helped make 2015 one of the best years ever for events in Westfield,” Westfield Parks Director Melody Jones stated in a press release.

“We will work hard to make 2016 another great year for events, parks and trails here in Westfield.”

The report also highlighted the new restroom at Simon Moon Park to be open season-round. Construction will be completed in the spring.

Westfield candidate for HCC – Bill Dennis, of the Westfield area, has filed to run for the Hamilton Co. Council (R-At-Large). Dennis served on the Westfield School Board and was a precinct committeeman for the Hortonville precinct.

MONON TRAIL

Fireside Tales – This event was held two nights in the fall at Simon Moon Park around a fire pit. The event included s’mores and a story and craft. The attendance was estimated at 150 participants each night.

Westfield in Lights – Attendance increased to more than 3,500 people. The Parks Dept. claimed that attendance increases each year the event is held.

Grassy Branch Bridge – The bridge was completed and connects the Monon to Ind. 32. This accomplishment makes way for Phase 5 (a bridge over Ind. 32) and Phase 7 (Monon Trail from Monon Trail Elementary School to 216th Street.)

Phase 6 – Phase 6 is now done with the Monon being completed from 181st Street to Monon Trail Elementary School.

This added 6,800 feet to the trail and 1,250 feet of connector trails. Signs and lighting will be completed this spring.

Westfield was recently ranked No. 7 out of 10 cities as the one of the safest cities in the state. A Consumer Affairs achievement report completed the study using Census Bureau data and FBI crime statistics.

The report came out just after the Westfield Police Dept. released their year-end report, which files information on traffic accidents, arrests and other calls.

The report showed decreased numbers in robberies, hit-and-runs and traffic fatalities

since 2014.

“I’m not surprised that Westfield is consistently listed as one of the safest communities in Indiana,” Mayor Andy Cook stated in a press release. “Our public safety professionals take their jobs very seriously and work tirelessly to keep our residents and visitors out of harm’s way.”

Police Chief Joel Rush credited officers with continuing to keep crime rates low.

“They perform their duties diligently and take great pride in serving the Westfield community,” Rush said.

From the Consumer Affairs report, Westfield’s burglary odds are 1 in 1,104. Burglaries are down

51.6 percent and there are 13.44 police officers per 10,000 residents. The crime rate is 26.8 per 1,000 residents and the daily crimes committed are averaged at 2.51.

“We are very blessed to have the dedicated public safety professionals we do,” Cook said.

WHS student launches STEM club

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com After feeling as if she wasn’t prepared early enough to follow a career in engineering, Emmalee Severson is engineering organizing a program for girls in fifth and sixth grade to explore STEM (science, technology engineering and mathematics).

“I am currently looking to study engineering when I go to college, and I always felt like I didn’t have the experience that some people had with computer science or programming or anything science related,” the Westfield High School junior said. “I wanted to give girls an opportunity to get involved earlier.”

Her program, Girls Rock STEM, will occur Feb. 20 at Westfield Intermediate School from 10 a.m. to noon. The program is free, running off of donations and sponsorships.

Severson will be organizing five different stations for the girls to take part in. Some stations allow students to learn how to use science to make ice cream, play with robots or extract DNA from fruit. The five stations focus on various topics: physics, chemistry, biology, environmental and computer sciences.

“I want to show them that they have a lot of opportunities. Like in engineering, there are

so many routes to go and so many opportunities for the future that girls are just starting to get introduced to,” Severson said.

Local brewery a tour stop

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com With 2016 being the bicentennial year for the state of Indiana, there are many events throughout the area. In addition, beer Hamilton Co. Tourism christened 2016 as “The Year of the Beer.”

Through the BrewsLine bus, the Bicentennial Brew Tour is sponsored largely by Hamilton Co., with most of the brewery stops in the county. One of the stops includes Westfield’s own Grand Junction Brewery.

Jon Knight, co-owner of Grand Junction Brewery with wife Dawn, said that one of the reasons the brewery is a stop is because it is one of the few breweries in Hamilton Co. “It’s also the history because we give such a nod to Westfield’s history,” Dawn said.

The Bicentennial Brew Tour also stops at Deer Creek Brewery (Noblesville), Deviate Brewing (Indianapolis), Heady Hollow Brewing Company (Fishers) and Sun King Brewery (Fishers, Indianapolis). The tours started Jan. 10 and take place every Sunday through May 22 beginning at 12:30 p.m. The tour costs $40 per person.

Another check off of Westfield’s history list is that Grand Junction Brewery is featuring two of their beers that highlight Indiana and Westfield’s history during the tour.

“A number of the beers we make have a historical significance to them. The two beers are the Squirrel Stampede English Nut brown ale and the Black Hat Brigade Rye IPA,” Jon said.

The Squirrel Stampede is named after an actual squirrel stampede that took place in Ham Co. in the 1800s due to a migration of squirrels from Illinois that came across Indiana to Ohio.

The Black Hat Brigade is named after a Civil War regiment that was comprised of many Hamilton Co. men.

He added that although commercial development may not lease out space in the Monon

Marketplace, there are retailers attracted to the west side of Ind. 32 because of the big developments.

“I have a long list of retailers that want to be at that intersection because of the Monon Marketplace. We needed to get one retail center going to get everybody excited about it,” he said.

Too much attention

It was difficult to let go, but the results of our decision couldn’t have worked out better.

Now we find ourselves in the same boat with respect to our revenue operation. It is as near and dear to us as editorial and our team are.

But if we were honest with ourselves, and we are, it became apparent it was time to step back from that part of the business, too. We’re growing, and we believe we can grow a whole lot better by relinquishing the day-to-day management of sales to a proven professional. So that’s what we decided to Sonoga do, and as of Feb. 1, Marka Sonoga is our first sales manager. She comes to us from El Dorado, Ark., where she was the advertising director, having previously served in a similar capacity in LaGrange, Ga. Prior to that, she was involved in ad sales for print and television in Youngstown, Ohio. Needless to say, we’re excited to have her aboard. We have tasked Marka with building a newer and improved sales culture here, a challenge she readily accepts. Line of sight Commentary by Terry Anker As he often does, a good friend forwarded a quote via email designed to both break-up the day and to inspire a contemplative moment. In his book adapted from a series of wartime BBC interviews, “Mere Christianity,” C.S. Lewis said “If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.” The leading advocate at the time for a reasoned defense of the faith, Lewis brought attention to the universal longing of humankind.

Whether one conforms with the view that our lives on this Earth are inconsequential to the ones that will follow in heaven, most of us experience some sense of isolation and lack of belonging. Our relationships, our careers, and even our own self-worth, at times seem to elude satisfaction. Luckily, the sensation ebbs and flows for the majority. Yet for some, a constant pall of loneliness hangs on to them. We need more. We

need better. We need different! So, how do we satiate our desires without, if we follow Lewis’s argument, dying? Moreover, doesn’t a healthy sense of aspiration lift us all?

Certainly, we should find our center – our point on the horizon – and cling to it. What in our lives is it that matters most? My wise spouse once proclaimed, “You are most happy about tomorrow when you are a bit unhappy about today.” She is right. Some need to long for improvement today if they hope to achieve it tomorrow. It keeps the line of sight off of our shoes and out in front. Is it more important to know (or imagine) where we are going than to know (or imagine) where we are? Today may be filled with limitations, but tomorrow is abundant with opportunity. Isn’t that where we really belong?

I don’t know about most women, but I appreciate the occasional catcall. A hearty whistle from the construchumor tion site as I jog by. An enthusiastic honk from the landscape truck as I idle at a stoplight.

Even the mall vendor touting his perfume with, “Hey, beautiful lady!” At my age, I feel any unsolicited attention paid to a gal in sweatpants or a minivan is cause for celebration. Yay, me! I haven’t completely fallen apart!

But some guys take it too far. I was at the grocery store the other day and because, for once, I was child and husband free, I decided to use a holiday gift card at the Starbucks counter for a coffee. Unfortunately, a sign indicated that the Meijer employee-turned-barista had stepped away for a moment, and so I had nothing to do but stand there and wait. Enter a man to my left, sauntering out of produce and right up next to me. We’re the only two people in this section of the store, but he comes to rest less than a foot away.

Personal space was clearly not on his radar.

We exchanged pleasantries, and because I’m nice, I answered his questions about the order I would hopefully be placing soon. Then he starts dropping comments like, “This is the most enjoyable wait I’ve had in a while, next to a pretty woman like you,” and “You’re so nice, I hope we’re here a while longer.” I’m super uncomfortable, but I also really want a latte. And he’s still standing like 10 inches from me.

Finally the counter reopens. Again, my politeness sabotages by efforts at disinterest and forces me to engage my “admirer.”

I offer to let him order first since he is only getting a muffin. His reply is “No, because then I’d be denied the pleasure of your company.”

Had this been an elderly man and a harmless flirtation, I would have played right along. But actually being hit on by a middle-aged stranger at the coffee shop was too much. Just give me the impersonal catcalls from afar! Peace out.

Comments on road funding Commentary by Mayor Andy Cook No physical, government-owned asset touches our lives more than roads.

As a mayor, I know residents care city very much about roads. Unfortunately, cities and towns of Indiana do not have the financial resources today to properly and responsibly maintain our streets.

By the very nature of Indiana’s geographic location, and our industrial base of manufacturing and logistics, Indiana should own and operate a model transportation system of both state and local roadways.

Major Moves has made much headway in this endeavor. But just looking at a map of our surrounding states, we can see they have miles of non-interstate freeways, while Indiana does not. The new U.S. 31 from Indianapolis to South Bend is a great start, and we are most grateful for its presence. But by waiting too many years to actually construct the project, more dollars had to be spent and more businesses had to be relocated than if the work had started years ago.

Today, the Indiana Dept. of Transportation has excellent leadership at the top. I congratulate Gov. Pence, and Indiana’s Senate

and House for making this issue a priority this season. The House version – which calls for an indexed gas tax adjustment – would create a permanent solution now. I concur with that recommendation. Indiana’s fuel tax has not been changed since 2003. Also, because of more fuel-efficient cars and trucks, we are all buying less gallons. We are all, therefore, paying a substantial amount less per year in fuel taxes today than we were a decade ago. This “increase” is, in reality, a way to catch up with revenue that should have been going to our roads for years.

It’s also interesting to note that polling demonstrates that drivers are supportive when shown this return on their investment.

Indiana mayors are ready to stand behind this permanent fix this session. Let’s plan for the long-term health of our local roads and streets. Together as state and local governments, we can show our residents a return on their investment in roads.

John is a local chiropractor who spent part of his life boning up on how people, specifically Hoosiers, talk.

John’s contention is that Hoosiers have created and speak a “new global language” by combining words into nifty little linguistic packages. “People in other states also run words together occasionally,” he said, “but Hoosiers are way bedderdnat.” (better than that). Hoosiers reduce the number of syllables in a word, which gives them mordnenuf (more than enough) time to watch baskaball (basketball).

If you are innersted (interested), you can listen to the book’s accompanying CD that provides hunnerds (hundreds) of additional samples. Legends in Concert: It’s not the real thing but it’s close

By Zach Dunkin • news@currentinwestfield.com Sure, they’re not the real thing. But what do you think it would cost to see a concert featuring Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Whitney Houston, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner music and Bette Midler – even if you could get them all on the stage at one gathering?

Well, that’s not going to happen, but a lineup of entertainers impersonating that power quintet will do its best to come close to their look and sound when the “Legends in Concert” show headlines the Terrace Showroom at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino in Anderson Feb. 19, 20 and 21.

“Legends in Concert’s reputation of only using the best of the best tribute artists is the main contributor of their legiti-

macy and longevity,” said Adam Kallick, Hoosier Park’s director of entertainment. “They have a variety of tribute artists where a venue like ours can change the show up by featuring a variety of genres and artists.”

What started in 1983 as a limited six-week engagement at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Legends in Concert has entertained more than 30 million fans worldwide at various venues such as Hoosier Park, which hosted its first Legends show last May. Legends claims to be the longestrunning tribute show in Vegas.

In addition to spot-on imitations, the 75-minute shows are known for their elaborate theatrical sets, costumes and special effects, including 3D multimedia and multimillion dollar, state-of-the-art lighting, laser and sound systems.

More semi-homemade Super Bowl food

By Joe Drozda and Bob Bley We came up with this recipe because every Super Bowl party needs a platter of sandwiches that is expandable, tasty and easy.

Looking for a more intense flavor, we made brats cooked in beer and special spices, served on kraut. To make the plate expandable for larger amounts of guests and for children, we cooked up some precooked stadium brats, and for the kids, apple chicken sausages. All the extra sausages should be browned in a separate skillet and placed on the bed of kraut as needed. The brats with kraut make a very satisfying sandwich if you crave German/Polish flavor Americanized. We love this dish served on poppy seed rolls with spicy mustard.

Ingredients: • 1/8 teaspoon crushed celery seeds • 1/8 teaspoon dried dill weed • 1 teaspoon onion powder • 2 teaspoons dry mustard powder • 1 heaping tablespoon dark brown sugar • 1/2 cup sour cream • 1 pound fresh Johnsonville Original Bratwurst • 1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle lager beer • 32 oz. jar of Vlasic Polish Sauerkraut, drained

• Extra sausages – Johnsonville Stadium Style Cooked Brats and Johnsonville Apple Chicken Sausage Links (cooked) Preparation: Place bratwursts into a large nonstick skillet and brown each side gently over medium heat. Mix together beer and dry ingredients in a bowl, making sure the brown sugar dissolves. Pour this mixture over the brats. Bring to a boil and reduce to simmer, covered, for 10 minutes.

Uncover the skillet and raise heat to gently boil the sauce until it reduces to a thick, syrupy liquid, for about 15 minutes. Roll brats in the sticky sauce until thoroughly coated on all sides. Transfer brats to a platter and keep them warm. Add the sauerkraut and sour cream to the skillet and to mix with leftover sauce, stir fry 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer sauerkraut to a serving platter and top with cooked bratwurst.

The beauty of this recipe is that you can add more sausages until everyone has had his or her fill.

Jazzing it up at Palladium

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com One is equipped with a saxophone, the other is a jazz guitarist. John Scofield and Joe Lovano will be passing through music Carmel and performing at the Palladium at 8 p.m. Feb. 6.

“It is an all-star group,” said Doug Tatum, vice president of programming at The Center for the Performing Arts. “John Scofield and Joe Lovano are both legendary jazz musicians and band leaders each leading their own group. It’s a rare combination to see two band leaders coming together to form a superstar quartet.”

Tatum highlighted that in addition to Lovano and Scofield, Ben Street will perform bass and Bill Stewart will be on the drums.

Lovano, who hails from Cleveland, draws both past and present music into his performances. Tatum said that Scofield emerged in the late 1980s and plays his jazz guitar with a rock sounding touch.

“It’s a unique combination of new and old in his play and he can shift gears in a split second to draw upon whatever inspires him in the moment,” Tatum said of Lovano’s sax playing. “With John Scofield, you have this rock sounding guitar in a jazz group so it definitely combines the elements of rock and jazz.

Although Scofield and Lovano have not passed through Carmel before, they have played together in the past. The quartet’s tour will serve as a reunion between the two musicians.

“As a jazz aficionado myself, these guys are truly master musicians,” Tatum said. “Anybody interested in great jazz and improvised music couldn’t do better than attending this concert.

These guys are universally recognized for what they do.”

Veal scaloppine marsala

Tonight my husband is treating us with a very special dinner at home for Valentine’s Day. Veal Scaloppine Marsala, one of his favorite dishes, is a mouth-watering classic.

Notes: Proper cooking of scaloppine (Italian for “thin cut”) should produce a tender meat. Don’t cook scaloppine in sauce as it will toughen up. To stem shiitake mushrooms pinch off stem from its base.

Serves: 4 / Time: 20 minutes Ingredients: 1 pound veal scaloppine, salt and freshly ground black pepper, 1 1/2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, 1/2 red onion, finely chopped (about 3/4 cup), 6 oz. shiitake mushrooms, stemmed and cut in half, 1 1/2 cups medium sweet marsala wine, 3 tablespoons low-fat half-and-half, 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter, 1 tablespoon of unbleached white flour, 1 tablespoon chopped rosemary Directions: Season the scaloppine on both sides with salt and pepper. Heat half olive oil in a nonstick skillet over high heat.

Quickly sear the scaloppine on both sides, about 30 seconds per side. Transfer veal to a platter. Heat the remaining oil in the skillet.

Add the onion and mushroom and cook over medium heat until just beginning to brown,

about 4 minutes. Add marsala, half-and-half, butter and flour; bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and gently simmer until sauce is reduced and thick, 8 to 10 minutes. Taste seasoning, adding salt and pepper if necessary. Reinforce the marsala flavor by adding a fresh splash at the end. Transfer scaloppine to sauce, sprinkle with rosemary and serve at once.

Teens and alcohol: Parental tips Commentary by Mary Ian McAteer, M.D. Teen alcohol use remains a serious problem. Peer pressure can be a strong influence for teenagers underage drinking in a time of life when “being an adult” takes on greater importance. With more teens dying each year in alcohol-related car accidents and evidence that suggests those who start drinking at an early age are more likely to misuse alcohol later in life, parents need to focus on ways they can help their children make good decisions about alcohol. This means starting the conversation early, modeling desired behavior, setting strict rules and staying involved.

Talk about it. Parents can begin talking with their children about drinking in an ageappropriate way as early as fourth or fifth grade. As children reach the teenage years, conversations should become more frequent and point to specific dangers, such as impaired judgement, slower reaction time and the risk of misuse or addiction.

Be a good role model. Parents are powerful role models. Children will learn a lot about drinking—responsibly or irresponsibly—by

watching their parents. Parents send messages to their children when they drink at a friend’s house and then drive home or come in the door after a hard day at work and immediately pour a glass of wine.

Establish firm, consistent rules about drinking. Underage drinking is illegal—even in private homes and even with adult supervision. To protect your family, rules about underage drinking in the home—or in a friend’s home—should be no different than the law. Lovingly communicate this to your children, and be sure they understand the consequences.

Stay involved. Know your teenager’s friends (and their parents, if possible). Pay attention to changes in attitude or behavior, including declining school performance or hesitancy to bring new friends to the house, which may signal alcohol use or other problems.

Westfield High School teachers have deemed hump day as “Workout Wednesday,” stating that if teachers work exercise out during the six minutes between passing periods, they are allowed to wear comfy exercise clothes to class.

English teacher Holly Wheeler said the special education, English and foreign language departments have a higher participation.

“Winters are kind of blah, especially second trimester because it’s the longest trimester broken up by so many breaks and we were thinking we needed something to pep us up,” Wheeler said. “I would preach to the kids that exercise and fitness before the SAT or AP exams gets your brain firing, and I should practice what I preach.”

The teachers have been participating for a few weeks and plan to keep up the workouts until spring break.

“When we come back into the classroom, we are a little sweaty, and our heartrate is up, and the energy is up in the class,” Wheeler said. “It’s just better. It’s really bringing us together because people bring up new exercises to do.”

Sometimes the teachers work out on the stairs, allowing them to supervise the students on the stairwells, which Wheeler said is an area that is more difficult to watch.

The teachers who participated are entered into a raffle to win prizes from local areas around the community. Some of the prizes include a Grand Junction Brewery T-shirt and water bottles.

“Even the tech guys will participate, and the math department works out together, and it builds camaraderie amongst staff,” Wheeler said. “Exercising in small amounts increases memory, so I feel like teachers are more on their A-game.”

1. The new kitchen cabinetry added significant storage to the room. They especially love the accessories. The homeowners were able to find a home for the items stored in the garage and even items from a storage unit.

2. The cooktop in the new, larger island provides a great place for cooking, especially when entertaining.

3. A second island with significant seating was designed to be close to the new windows, overlooking the scenic reservoir.

4. Traditional materials such as the wood-look tile floor and glossy blue-green backsplash tile coordinate with the rest of the home, and flow with the theme of the water.

5. With the many cabinet glass inserts, the homeowners love that they can now display inherited items that have been in storage for several years!

Before Background Info: This home on Geist Reservoir in the Ashford Point neighborhood was built in 1998.

The homeowners have lived there for 14 years but their home lacked the functionality and updates they needed for their family.

Before problems: The kitchen was not user-friendly or efficient. There was limited countertop space and cabinet storage. They kept several items in the garage that ultimately became a hassle when needed for cooking. They also do a lot of entertaining with family and friends that the space did not function well for.

Jaipur, in northwest India, is known today as the “Pink City.” Ironically, its most famous pink structure was designed in travel service of modesty.

Jaipur was a planned city, constructed between 1727 and 1733 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, who became ruler of India’s Amber Kingdom at age 11. Unlike earlier Indian cities, Jaipur’s streets were laid out on a grid. The city, which became the capital of Jai Singh’s kingdom, was originally surrounded by a wall entered through one of seven gates.

In the eighteenth century, Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, the grandson of Jai Singh, faced a dilemma. The ladies of his large harem were prohibited from being seen in public, at least without their faces covered. But they begged to be allowed to observe the festivities on the colorful street near the palace. In 1799, Pratap Singh found a solution. He erected a 50-foot-high screen of red and pink sandstone adjacent the palace. The baroque façade of the screen, containing 953 windows, suppos-

The upper three stories are just one room deep, while the two lower stories open onto courtyards. Ramps connect the five levels. The design and placement of the protruding windows facilitate the flow of cooling air throughout the structure, giving it the name “Hawa Mahal,” the “Palace of the Winds.”

Jaipur has been known as the Pink City since 1876, when English Prince Edward (later King Edward VII) made an official visit. In advance of his arrival, city officials emulated the famous Palace of the Winds by painting many of the city’s stucco buildings pink.
