Legislators talk Sunday sales

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Sunday alcohol sales, cold beer sales and solar energy legislation filled the conversation Jan. 13 at a town GOVERNMENT hall meeting in Westfield between state legislators.

Many of the questions asked of legislators was whether they support Sunday alcohol sales and cold beer sales.

“The whole complexity of this issue is alcohol is a controlled substance,” Sen. Jim Buck said. “I find it difficult at this point for me personally to be discussing the opioid situation with knowing my uncle died from alcoholism. We some way are glossing over that we have, as a government, controlled the sale of alcohol and yet at the same time are providing money for rehabilitation centers for those addicted to alcohol.”

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Although an unadvertised meeting prior to the approval of a Westchester planned unit development raised conDEVELOPMENT cerns, the meeting was legal, according to city attorney Brian Zaiger.

The meeting was legal, Zaiger said, because it was not organized by the city council majority, and only two council members attended. He said the meeting was for councilors to receive input from their constituents.

Neighbors also attended the meeting to learn more about the proposal and offer suggestions.

The proposal came before the city council at its Jan. 8 meeting and was approved, 5-2, with Joe Edwards and Cindy Spoljaric voting against.

Council member Joe Edwards was upset when he learned of the meeting, saying he believed meetings should be held in public. Leah Severson, who lives on one the four properties bordering the new development, felt similarly.

“I did not know of this meeting, nor was I invited to this meeting,” Severson said. “I didn’t find out about it until it was over. This might be a great development, but it was rushed through in such a bizarre way that I have no idea.”

Severson said she spoke at Advisory Plan Commission public hearings and has attended prior neighborhood meetings. She said, as far as she knows, three of the four homeowners bordering the property were not invited.

Matt Cohoat, one of the managing partners at Cohoat and O’Neal, which operates Wood Wind Golf Club, a public course at the center of the development, said the meeting was meant to improve the development.

“The current operators, Cohoat and O’Neal, have been funding shortfalls for many years, and they had limited resources, so it was not going to make any sense to continue to fund those shortfalls if there was no clarity to the future,” Cohoat said. “Bringing clarity to the future was critical for the operators, or the owners would have to turn off the spigot.”

Cohoat and O’Neal are under contract to close on purchasing the golf course, backed by an investment group, in connection with the development. If the golf course were to stop operating, the City of Westfield and Westfield

Washington Township both have first option to buy the course for $2.5 million.

Cohoat said the development may break ground this summer.

Kristen Burkman and Bruce Van Natta, two neighbors who spoke against Wood Wind developments in the past, issued a statement regarding Westchester’s approval: “It became apparent that the current operators of Wood Wind Golf Course would be closing the golf course due to financial circumstances if the Westchester PUD failed,” the statement said. “At this point, the golf course operator, developer and neighbors were asked to come to a meeting with representatives from the City Council to see if common ground could be reached to keep the golf course open and have responsible development to support the community and schools.

“The intent of the Wood Wind meeting was to allow the developer, golf course representative and leaders of the neighborhood group to sit down and have a conversation to see if there was any common ground.”

As any good Hoosier gardener knows, it’s never too early to start planning your next crop. With this in mind, the COUNTY Purdue Extension’s Master Gardeners program in Hamilton County is sponsoring the first Central Indiana Seed Swap later this month.

The event will be at the Hamilton County 4-H Fairgrounds, 2003 Pleasant St., Noblesville, Jan. 27. Gardening enthusiasts are invited to buy, sell and trade seeds from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free and open to everyone, whether you have seeds to trade or not.

“Every gardener has extra seeds that never get used,” SEEDS Committee cochair Shelli Broadbent said. “Bring them to our seed swap and take home some new seeds. Even if you don’t have any seeds to share, you’re invited to this event. There will be plenty of seeds for everyone. Join us for an afternoon of meeting other gardeners and chatting about all things green and growing. In addition to going home with seeds, you’re sure to go away with new information.”

Fellow co-chair Jennifer Lambert said the event also will serve as an opportunity to learn from other local gardeners.

“A seed swap is a great opportunity to meet with local gardeners and experts to exchange tips, knowledge and, of course, seeds,” Lambert said. “Typically, open-pollinated seeds that are adapted to the local region are swapped between gardeners who are wanting to expand their planting varieties. Best of all, it’s free.”

Attendees will be able to choose from fruit, vegetable, herb, flower and native seeds. One of the main attractions will be the rare variety that cannot be found in stores.

Although seed swaps are quite popular, this is the first official event of its kind in Hamilton County. According to Broadbent, the last Saturday in January is National Seed Swap Day. It began Jan. 26, 2006, in Washington, D.C. Broadbent and Lambert came up with the idea for the local event after attending a swap in Indianapolis.

“Vegetable gardening is my passion, so in the winter months, I’m usually reading up on seed catalogs and planning my next season,” Lambert said. “In February 2016, I attended the Benton House Seed Swap in historic Irvington, hosted by Peter Kuhns. I immediately fell in love with the whole idea of sharing seeds and talking to interesting people. I took a couple of seed varieties to trade and met one of the vendors, Jim Wyant, a.k.a. Tomato Jim. I asked if he would be willing to trade some of my loufa seeds for some of his tomato seeds and, sure enough, he agreed.”

The group has made progress on its Hamilton County Seed Library, which will open in March at the Carmel Clay Public Library. The Seed Library will be free to Hamilton County residents.

Patrons can check out up to five packets per visit (a total of 15 packets per season) and plant them in their home gardens. At the end of the growing season, they are asked to save seeds to return to the library or to use in their own gardens next season.

Local Girl Scout creates prairie

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com A 13-year-old Westfield girl is learning the aspects of fundraising, hard work and giving back to her ACHIEVEMENT community as she pursues her Girl Scout Silver Award. Jenna Lowes, a member of Girl Scout Troop 1505, is working to create a prairie and to beautify Freedom Trail Park in Westfield.

“I’m doing this to promote Mayor (Andy) Cook’s Green Initiative, which is a movement to beautify and naturalize park areas of Westfield to attract wildlife,” Lowes said.

“Another goal of my project is to make an enjoyable, low-maintenance area in Freedom Trail Park.”

Lowes sought the help of Genesis Farms to remove sod and make the area available for planting the prairie at no cost to the Girl Scouts. However, Lowes is fundraising for seeds, which will cost approximately $1,900. She also is fundraising to supply signs from CSI Signs to identify the prairie.

“I really enjoy Westfield parks, and so when I thought about what I could do for my project, I went to the Westfield Parks Dept. and there was a list of things that could be done, and this one sounded like a challenging project,” she said. “I kind of wanted a challenge as far as projects go.

ELECTION She’s seeking to replace Paul Ayers, a Carmel resident who decided to not seek a third term.

Pauley will run against two well-known candidates: Rick Sharp, former president of the Carmel City Council and candidate for mayor of Carmel, and Ken Alexander, a Westfield resident who previously was the director of Grand Park.

Pauley said she decided to run because she believes her experience as clerk-treasurer and executive director of the Carmel bond bank can now be best served at the county council level.

“I am a fiscal conservative who understands the need for strategic planning of investments while achieving the best possible financing options for the taxpayer,” she said.

She filed her campaign papers Jan. 10.

She was joined by Ayers and former Carmel Mayor Jane Reiman, both of whom support her campaign.

Pauley noted that her elected position will be eliminated in 2019 and she would only leave her job a year early if she were to win the election.

Delsie Maxine Montgomery, 96, of Westfield, died Jan. 9 at Harbour Manor Care Center in Noblesville.

She was born May 27, 1921 to David Montgomery and Dora (Steward) Ray in Rush County.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Carolyn Montgomery; daughter, Glee (James) Hutson; six grandchildren; 12 greatgrandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Delsie was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip K. Montgomery; son, Hal Montgomery; four siblings, Kenneth “Doc” Ray, Albert Ray, Lucille Ray, and Thomas Ray; grandson, Tyler Montgomery; and granddaughter, Holly Hutson.

Soccer groups hosts Fire and Ice Ball for youth sports

“This event is really important for the greater Hamilton County community,” he said. “It provides opportunities for these kids to be involved in this when otherwise they wouldn’t be able to participate because of the expense. I wanted to be able to provide a conduit for other kids that didn’t have resources, to watch that child grow through youth sports.”

The event will feature silent and live auctions, Sever dinner, dancing and an after-party at a location not yet announced. Tickets are $95 for individuals, $450 for a table of five and $800 for a table of 10.

“It provides an outstanding opportunity for people in our area and for kids to be part of something special,” Sever said.

Indiana Fire Juniors will host its third Fire and Ice Ball this year with a goal of raising $50,000 for FUNDRAISER youth soccer. The organization is the host team at Grand Park, featuring 75 teams and 1,100 players on its travel side. It offers soccer for ages 4 through 23.

The Fire and Ice Ball, 6:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at Mill Top Banquet and Conference Center in NoblesWebber ville, is a fundrasier for kids who can’t afford to play.

“The Fire and Ice Ball was my vision when we came together to find another way to support community athletes that could otherwise not afford to play soccer without some additional assistance,” said Mark Webber, IFJ executive director.

Commentary by Terry Anker If we are lucky, they don’t happen very often. In fact, some people go years without a single one. A 2017 study released by California-based Integrated Benefits Institute holds that the U.S. spends $227 billion per year on sick days and the loss of productivity that goes along with them.

Interestingly, the expense for illness is not distributed equally across all employee classes. For example, office workers cost more than those in the service industry.

Moreover, this particular study only addressed private companies with paid sick leave policies. The actual numbers for all Americans must be much higher.

It is difficult to measure the cost to the individual in lost wages, position and opportunity. The work rarely goes away and awaits our return. We fear that we are burdening our co-workers in our absence.

Are they resenting carrying the extra load?

Have we asked too much from them?

To be sure, when we are ill, we should stay home. It is better for us. And, it is better for those who work with us. Yet, understanding the line between too sick to be productive and just sick enough to be annoyed is more of an art than a science.

Sure, a feverous contagion should be a clear signal to stay in bed. But, what about a sneeze?

For many of us, working from home can bridge the gap. We stay productive, at least to some degree, while not exposing our colleagues to our incapacitation. Alas, for many, going to the office is the only option.

But, are we doing anybody a favor by trying to be a hero? Probably not.

Order in the Universe

It doesn’t take much to realize and recognize that the world around us in all its ramifications is simply RELIGION given to us – the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the rivers, the oceans, the vegetation, the forests, animals, birds.

We had absolutely no hand in creating any of these.

In a sense, these are all God-given gifts to us. If we accept this premise, we can recognize the hand of the Lord in myriad other ways. One such is order.

The sun always rises in the east and sets in the west. The moon goes around the earth, and all the planets merrily revolve around the sun without ever colliding with each other following what physicists and astronomers call Kepler’s Laws and exerting gravitational forces. There is a certain rhythm/regularity in the occurrence of seasons.

There is order in the human body. If one were to look at the number of drugs and over-the-counter medicines in a typical drug store, we get an idea of the number of ailments that can possibly exist in the human body. Many things can go wrong but don’t because of an inherent order; there is harmony in the way

the organs work.

Order also manifests as harmony in nature. Humans and animals co-exist living in their own worlds but enrich and supplement the creation, which in itself is part of a big order. Tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis and other natural disasters – these also are part of the order. No matter how tragic their consequences may be on a macroscopic scale, they are still a part of the larger cosmic order. So is the beauty of a rainbow and of the waterfalls. It is humbling to realize and recognize that everything in the universe is just order and we are just blessed to be part and parcel of this divinity called God. Various natural forces and conservation laws of momentum and energy should be convincing enough to convert an atheist’s views on God. We often speak of Seven Wonders of the World, without ever realizing we are part of the biggest wonder – one that transcends all religions.

Doo and I have four teenagers. I like this phase of parenting, not only because it’s less physically demanding but HUMOR also because most nights are free from motherhood responsibilities. I was recently reminded of those literal dark times, though, after one of our twins had her wisdom teeth removed.

We found ourselves planning ahead for the overnight druggings in much the same way we used to divvy up feedings. “I’ll take the 10 p.m. hydrocodone if you can get up at 2 a.m. for the prescription Motrin.” Somehow, I got the short end of the stick with the early morning assignment, and though I like to think I can rise to any challenge, this one kicked my butt. I’m simply too old for such nonsense!

Long ago, when my babies were actually babies, I was the queen of getting up in the middle of the night. I could make an Enfamil bottle one-handed in under a minute by moonlight. Sure, I occasionally fed the wrong kid (even boy/girl twins look identical at 3 a.m.) and would sometimes purposefully ignore the cries of hunger for a few more minutes of sleep, but ultimately I did my job and did it well.

Not so much anymore. Middle age and midnight feedings/patient care do not mix.

The alarm scared me to death because I’d forgotten why I’d set it. My eyes couldn’t read the Rx labels, even after turning on the light. And I nearly killed myself retrieving a cup of water when I tripped over a discarded boot. A far cry from my parenting glory years!

That’s OK, though. I much prefer where I am now. Peace out.

My wife noticed that I was continually swatting flying bugs in the house. I told her this one little black gnat had HUMOR been bothering me for several days, but every time I took a whack at it, it disappeared.

“Those are not insects,” Mary Ellen said.

“You have floaters.”

“What’s a floater?” I asked. I always thought a floater was a dead body the police found in the river.

Mary Ellen explained to me that floaters are an eye disorder that is common with people my age. Then she realized why, for the last several weeks, I was always waving at her while we were watching TV. At first that little gnat was annoying, but with proper eye-roll and head tilt, I could sometimes control exactly when and where Skipper would appear (yes, I named him). He still makes unannounced appearances — like right now, as I’m typing this, he’s driving me crazy.

For a few days, Skipper totally disappeared, but then this morning he returned with a friend — a squiggly line underneath him — who follows him around wherever

he goes. He was doing a great job driving me nuts on his own. I’m not sure why he needed a partner.

One website suggested this home remedy: While sitting in a chair, rub your hands together briskly to warm them, and place your palms over your eyes. My wife walked in as I was trying this, and she thought I wanted to play hide-and-seek.

Another site revealed a nutritional fix for floaters. It’s a regimen for consuming large amounts of citrus fruit like lemons, limes and oranges for 10 straight days. I tried that for almost two weeks. The bad news is I still have floaters. The good news? No signs of scurvy.

I called my brother in New York to see if he had any experience with this condition.

“I don’t know what you mean by floaters,” he said. “But before we hang up, I was wondering, do you guys in Indiana also have houseflies in the winter?”

Parents share daughter’s painful story, schools talk policy

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com As with many parents, Andy and Michelle Wickham moved to Westfield for its schools. They have five children and heard good COVER STORY things about Westfield Washington Schools.

A decade later, last May the Wickhams withdrew their two youngest children from WWS and transferred them to Our Lady of Grace, a private school in Noblesville. What the Wickhams describe as chronic bullying of their second youngest child prompted the transfer. The Wickhams chose to keep their daughter’s name private so as to not bring unwanted attention to her or her siblings at school.

The Wickhams’ daughter registers on the autism spectrum. She was a student in a life skills course at Westfield Middle School during the 2016-17 school year when the incidents began. Her parents said the class had nine students with multiple adults present to assist. Students are taught to tell teachers when they are uncomfortable in different situations. Some experiences might be difficult for them because of their disabilities. The Wickhams’ daughter alerted a teacher when a male student allegedly touched her arms, thighs and other areas.

According to the Wickhams, the events continued for more than six months.

The Wickhams discovered the incidents when their daughter confided in one of their older children. The daughter was in tears even though her autism often makes it difficult to express emotion.

“At that point I’m like, ‘Nine kids, three adults, six months, almost every day and nobody saw anything?’ I don’t have a word to express it,” Andy said.

Michelle said her daughter told the teacher she was uncomfortable five times during the six-month span. But Michelle said nothing came of it.

“That was her interpretation of her events for six months, that likely the teacher was watching it

happen and it was just not a big deal or she didn’t care about her,” Michelle said.

DEPT. OF EDUCATION’S BULLYING STATUTE

The Wickhams believe what happened to their daughter was a form of bullying. The Indiana Dept. of Education has a bullying statute defining bullying: “Bullying means overt, unwanted, repeated acts or gestures, … committed by a student or group of students against another student with the intent to harass, ridicule, humiliate, intimidate or harm the other targeted student and create for the targeted student an objectively hostile school environment.”

Under Indiana’s Student Safety Reporting Law, schools are required to report bullying and arrest data to the IDOE by July 1 of each year.

“You look at lots of different things to determine if it’s bullying,” WWS Supt. Sherry Grate said.

Grate said WWS follows a bullying prevention program called Olweus, which targets the entire school community by teaching kids how to treat others right. She Grate said reported incidents don’t go unnoticed.

“What sometimes is really hard for parents to understand is because of confidentiality, administrators will have investigated thoroughly and taken action as appropriate with all involved,” Grate said.

“However, administrators can’t release personal information, even though parents (of victims) want

Although many bullying instances are handled internally, if school officials suspect a child is abused, they are required to report to the Dept. of Child Services. School resource officers, an extension of the Westfield Police Dept., also are placed in schools.

“We have a duty to report,” Grate said. “It’s not up to us to make that determination. If we think a child is being abused, we have to immediately report that to DCS, and they do an investigation.

If something breaks the law, we have resource officers in our school, and then our resource officers automatically are brought in. There’s a process we

go through, there’s a repor those kinds of things.”

“We do see a lot of child-on-child perpetration, or one kid forcing another kid to do something they don’t want to do,” Peregrin said.

WHEN BULLYING BECOMES A CRIME

Sometimes, what might appear to be bullying can actually be classified as assault, intimidation or harassment. Local attorney Jim Crum said although he’s never personally dealt with a criminal case that began as bullying, he is certain they’ve occurred.

When juveniles are involved, such cases are kept confidential.

Indiana doesn’t have a bullying law. If crimes were committed, Crum said they would likely be Crum classified as either intimidation or harassment. Cases also might lead to a civil suit if damages occur.

“It’s kind of difficult. When you talk about saying certain things (with bullying), of course we have to worry about the First Amendment right. Parents and Westfield citizens recently shared rumors of WPD officers riding school buses to deter bullying in a thread on the Westfield Chatter Facebook page. Others posted dozens of comments sharing their children’s experiences as bullying victims. The post has since been removed.

Hollowell said the comment regarding officers deterring bullying on buses was false.

“The only time (officers) have ridden the bus in the past was with people committing bus-stop arm violations, and even that was a couple years back,” he said.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Grate encourages students — or parents of students — who feel they are being bullied to report the incident. The district offers many reporting avenues, such as through teachers, principals, assistant principals, guidance counselors, the district website or even by speaking to Grate herself.

“I will assure you any report that is brought to the attention of any school personnel will be thoroughly investigated,” she said. “As much information as can be provided really helps with that investigation or situation. The best way to solve a problem is when everybody comes to the table to talk about it. Airing those on social media or behind a keyboard is not productive.”

Grate said it truly does take a village to raise a child, and if all parties cooperate, an action plan can be developed and acted upon for each situation.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE WICKHAM FAMILY

Michelle shared her daughter’s story because she wants to raise awareness of bullying. In extreme cases, Michelle reminds, bullying has resulted in suicides.

“At the end of the day, we care about these kids, we care about the community,” Michelle said.

“These are our neighbors, and I can’t watch another set of parents bury their child and think there was something I could have done.”

Michelle addressed the school board at its Jan. 9 meeting. She asked members to reevaluate bullying policies and procedures.

“I have no confidence in the protocols, policies and training of professionals whose job it was to look after my children while in school,” she said during her presentation. “If they didn’t notice it, how can they fix it? They didn’t see it, so they couldn’t stop it. Change the way you’re looking. I am asking the board to consider looking deeply at existing policies and protocols around bullying. Look deeper than just the definition of bullying the Indiana Dept. of Education has given you to work with.”

Although the board isn’t required to respond to the audience during public comment, some members assured Wickham her comments weren’t ignored.

The Wickhams aren’t sure of their next steps. Our Lady of Grace classes extend only through eighth grade. Their daughter is in eighth grade. When she finishes the school year, the Wickhams are unsure if they will move to a new school district or enroll her in Westfield High School.

“This is my child, this is not an experiment,” Michelle said. “I don’t get to try again. We have to do everything we can to protect her.”

Couple opens Closet Candy Boutique after online sales soar

By Heather Collins news@currentinwestfield.com What started as a few racks of clothing at an airbrush tanning salon in Scottsdale, Ariz., has turned into a multiNEW BIZ million-dollar boutique anchored in central Indiana in only a few short but difficult years.

Christina Smith, who moved to Zionsville in 2015 to be near family, opened Closet Candy Boutique in Clay Terrace. It’s the company’s first brick-and-mortar store, but it had already gained quite a following across the nation before its August opening, garnering more than 1 million Facebook fans before it even opened its doors.

Despite its fast start, the road to success wasn’t easy. Smith’s husband and shop co-owner, Chad, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in the midst of launching the boutique. The couple struggled to balance caring for their two children, opening a new store and Chad’s medical treatment.

“The biggest thing we took away from that experience is that with each other and our faith, we know now we can get through anything,” Smith said.

Smith didn’t start out intending to build a national clothing boutique. But when tanning salon clients requested she ship the few clothing items available for sale across the nation, she knew she was on to something.

Closet Candy Boutique launched online in 2012, and six weeks later, through the power of social media, it was making more than $100,000 in monthly sales. By the end of its first year online, Closet Candy Boutique had

brought in more than $1 million in sales.

Since its launch, the company has fulfilled more than 300,000 online orders, donated $100,000 to charity and continues to operate debt-free.

The online store has seamlessly transitioned to a brick-and-mortar store in Clay Terrace. The store offers a boutique shopping experience.

Betsy Simpson, 36, has followed the company on Instagram for more than two years. She moved from Scottsdale, where Closet Candy Boutique started, to Carmel in August and was shocked to see the Instagram announcement that it was in her new hometown.

“As much as I love the convenience of ordering online, it’s always great to go into the store and try the items on,” Simpson said. “The staff at Closet Candy Boutique are all so friendly and eager to help me pick out the perfect pieces.”

The early success of Closet Candy Boutique has been a team effort. Smith has a keen eye for fashion, Chad has a background in marketing and design, and they share a faith that has helped them persevere through the challenges of opening a new business while battling cancer at the same time.

Smith designs some of the items featured at Closet Candy Boutique. She describes the products offered at the shop as comfortable, cute, everyday clothing.

Many of the boutique’s online shoppers have asked for additional storefront locations. Smith said she plans to make that happen. Two more retail stores are in the plans.

Tom Weesner, Carol’s brother, is president of Motion 4 Life, which opened Jan. 20.

“We’ve been working on this for a few years and we’re really excited,” Tom said.

“Carol started this because she is on the reactive end of medicine in the emergency room and she has seen people coming after falls and issues with independent living. In addition to practicing, she wanted to begin making a difference in their lives on a proactive end.”

Tom said they have done a lot of research on what older people are concerned about when they go to a gym.

“We addressed those issues,” Tom said.

“For example, older folks are hesitant to join a gym because of loud music and younger, buff kids. We’ve created a facility where there is a social area where people can come in and play cards. We’ll have coffee there. It’s like a family room.”

There is a changing room with three private showers.

There is a disability-access area inside each locker room. There is a disability-accessible changing room where a caregiver can provide assistance.

“The music is going to be tailored for those of us who are older. It’s not going to be rock and roll blaring music,” Tom said.

Motion 4 Life has 10 employees, including two personal trainers and a registered dietitian.

“Older folks are most successful when they are working with a personal trainer, so all of our memberships include personal training at one level or another,” Tom said.

The hours are 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and closed Sundays.

Event analyzes ‘Star Wars’ film scores

Aaron Krerowicz, music scholar, will present on “Star Wars” film scores at MUSIC 6 p.m. Jan. 24 at WWPL, 333 W. Hoover St. “The Music of Star Wars: A Celebration of John Williams’ Film Scores” will highlight how the musical themes tell a story in the popular space opera. The event is free and open to the public.

“The fundamental premise is the music of ‘Star Wars’ tells the story of ‘Star Wars,’” the Carmel resident said. “Different characters have different themes, so when characters interact visually on screen, their themes interact in the soundtrack. By using themes, the music is able to tell the story.”

Krerowicz will play audio examples and clips from seven of the eight films. The eighth is still in theaters.

“The nicest compliment I’ve gotten when I do this program is, ‘I will never watch ‘Star Wars’ the same way again,’” he said.

“Most people don’t pay too much attention to the music. Everybody knows the opening scroll and end credits, but the musical artistry that goes into these soundtracks is exquisite. The goal for people in attendance is to find new things to appreciate

about films and music they’re already familiar with. They can see how music tells a story and go back and re-watch these films and have a newer and deeper appreciation for films and music by understanding how these themes work and how this music helps tell the story.”

Krerowicz usually presents on the Beatles, which he travels the nation to do. Last year, he presented on the Beatles at the WWPL. Krerowicz said typically 30 people attend the events, but 40 to 50 attended the WWPL Beatles program, so he’s expecting a large audience for the upcoming “Star Wars” presentation.

“I earn my living traveling around the country doing these presentations, but with the new film there’s a lot of interest in ‘Star Wars,’” he said. “My main focus is the Beatles. That’s where I’m doing most of my work. ‘Star Wars’ is just a glorified hobby, just for fun. I really like it, and I love the music.”

Krerowicz said he also enjoys analyzing “Star Wars” scores because the music is orchestral instead of rock.

Krerowicz writes a blog on “Star Wars” where he analyzes the entire “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” soundtrack. He also writes a free monthly newsletter. He will have both volumes of “BEATLESTUDY,” encyclopedias on the structural and harmonic analysis of the Beatles, available for purchase at the event. For more, visit flipsidebeatles.com.

The Carmel Symphony Orchestra will provide an early Valentine’s Day celebration when it performs the melodies of Gershwin and Bernstein.

CSO will be joined by Tessa Lark with the world premiere of “Love Letter,” a concerto written for Lark by her significant other, composer and musician Michael Thurber.

The performance is set for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 10 at The Palladium in Carmel. A pre-concert conversation, “Music Matters,” will start at 6:45 p.m.

Lark is the recipient of the 2016 Avery Fisher Career Grant, a silver medalist in the ninth Quadrennial International Violin Competition of Indianapolis and winner of the 2012 Naumberg International Violin Competition.

Thurber, who is from LaPorte, said “Love Letter” consists of four movements and embodies his admiration for Lark as a musician and person.

Gershwin hits will include “Embraceable You,” “But Not for Me” and “I Got “Rhythm.”

Beef & Boards to present Mamma Mia

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Ron Morgan has eagerly awaited when the licensing rights to present “Mamma Mia!” would be released to THEATER regional theaters.

“I was so excited to hear Beef & Boards was including it in their season and very thankful they chose me to direct the show,” Morgan said. “I remember the late ‘70s and early ‘80s and the music of ABBA. Morgan I first saw the show in Chicago and decided I would love to do it someday.”

Morgan also will serve as choreographer for “Mamma Mia!” for 66 performances at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre, 9301 Michigan Rd. Indianapolis, from Feb. 1 to April 8.

The story of a mother, a daughter named Sophie and her three possible dads is set on a Greek island paradise and told through Swedish super group ABBA’s tunes. As Sophie prepares to marry, she wants her father to walk her down the aisle. She doesn’t know who her dad is, so she invited all three men to the wedding.

Morgan said the show does provide a need for more rehearsal time.

“The music of ABBA drives this show and the vocal arrangements include a great deal of back-up vocals which require more rehearsal,” said Morgan, who lives in the Castleton area of Indianapolis and owns Carmel-based Performer’s Edge Dance Theatre School for Performing Arts.

Morgan said he was fortunate to be included in the casting of the show, which involved a trip to New York City.

“We had a great turnout at the audition because actors simply want to perform in this show,” Morgan said. “We have a mix of very talented local and NYC actors in this production. I’m really looking forward to putting this one together.”

The cast includes Westfield resident Don Farrell, a co-founder of Actors Theatre of Indiana, and Indianapolis resident Jeff Stockberger.

Morgan expects the show will appeal to a wide range of audiences.

Resafa: Honoring Sergius Commentary by Don Knebel Resafa is an ancient town near Raqqa, Syria, until recently the de facto capital of the so-called Islamic State.

Although most Americans have never heard TRAVEL of it, Resafa was once a famous Christian pilgrimage site.

The known history of Resafa goes back to the ninth century B.C., when it was identified in Assyrian texts as a military camp. The Bible reports that the king of Assyria warned Israel that he had captured Resafa (Rezeph) despite the supposed protection of its gods. The Romans eventually maintained Resafa as a fortification against the Persians.

At least according to legend, a Roman soldier named Sergius was beheaded in Resafa during the reign of Emperor Diocletian for refusing to worship the Roman god Jupiter.

Before being killed, Sergius was reportedly ordered to walk around Resafa in women’s clothing, with boards nailed to his feet. Christianity soon became legal in the Roman Empire and Sergius became a celebrated martyr. A church was built over his grave and the site began attracting pilgrims.

In approximately 425 A.D., the town was renamed “Sergiopolis.” A three-aisle basilica, called Basilica A, was later erected to hold relics associated with Sergius and to accommodate the growing crowds. In the sixth century, Byzantine Emperor Justinian erected a mile-long wall, featuring 24 towers and four ornate gates, to protect the town, at the time second only to Jerusalem in attracting Christian pilgrims. Despite the wall and a garrison of soldiers, Sergiopolis fell to the Umayyads in 636, who built a mosque just north of Basilica A. The town was abandoned in the 13th century and fell into ruins.

walls of Basilica A remain standing. Resafa/Sergiopolis was retaken from the Islamic State in June 2017, with little reported damage.

Chainsaws and killer coconuts Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt Falling coconuts kill an estimated 150 people worldwide every year. Because I don’t want to get killed by a falling coconut, I’m working on a patent GRAMMAR GUY for a combination shield/umbrella, which I’m thinking about calling the shumbrella (coming soon to a Bed Bath & Beyond near you). Falling from a height of 80 feet, coconuts can reach speeds of 50 mph. And, even though I haven’t noticed any coconut trees in Indiana (yet), a coconut could fall out of a plane, get shot out of a cannon or spat out of a really intense geyser, make an impact with my head and kill me.

It could happen.

What I really want to know is, when talking about my chances of getting killed by a falling coconut, should I use may or might? Is it “I may die as a result of the impact of a falling coconut” or “I might die as a result of the impact of a falling coconut?”

When it comes to may or might, it’s a matter of likelihood. If something may happen, it’s more likely than something that might happen. The incredibly unscientific way

I remember which one to use is: may = yay; might = yeah, right. As in, may could very well happen (yay) and might has a much smaller probability of occurring (yeah, right).

Based on an incredibly small likelihood, I would correctly say I might die as a result of the impact of a falling coconut.

As a left-handed person, I’m much more likely to die from operating a product intended for right-handed people. It happens to approximately 2,500 southpaws each year. And, with my poor track record using traditional, right-handed can openers, I would correctly say I may die while improperly operating equipment intended for right-handed users.

I’m actually a little worried about the statistic about equipment killing lefties. After all, at 10 percent of the world’s population, our quantities are already limited. Let’s just say I’m unlikely to operate a chainsaw anytime soon; I might use a chainsaw, but I probably won’t.

This permit will allow the permittee to land apply waste water treatment biosolids at agronomic rates to farmland located in Boone, Cass, Clinton, Hamilton, Howard, and Tipton Counties. The biosolids from this facility meet high quality criteria established by state and federal regulations, qualifying it for a “nonsite-specific” land application permit. The biosolids will be land applied on qualifying farmland in the designated counties upon receipt of permission of the landowner. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) recognize and encourage the beneficial use of waste water biosolids through such practices as land application.

The permit controls the quality of the biosolids to be applied as well as the yearly and cumulative amount of biosolids that can be land applied to a site. This individual should have previously worked in a fundraising capacity for a not-forprofit organization and would now like to return to the workforce on a part-time basis.
