Council to consider two residential developments

Arts group updates city

At its Dec. 3 meeting, the Noblesville Common Council heard an introduction for GOVERNMENT two ordinances asking for a change of zoning to allow for residential properties.

The first was a change of zoning for approximately 21.84 acres at 11002 E. 166th St. in Noblesville Township. The proposal is for the Stony Bluffs neighborhood.

The proposal first appeared before the council a year ago, but it returned with some changes.

“Originally, it came through proposed as a custom home subdivision, but the developer has found a builder who would like to build in this neighborhood,” senior planner Denise Aschleman said. “Drees Homes would be the builder.”

The framework of the request remains the same, although the petitioner is removing a portion from the flood plain.

“They are removing a portion of the proposal from the flood plain because currently, the flood line runs through the last four lots,” Aschleman said. “They still plan to have more than half the properties remain in the flood plain.”

Councilor Greg O’Connor asked about the minimum housing square footage, which dropped from the original proposal. Previously, the minimum was 3,000 square feet, but the new proposal allows for a minimum of 1,800 square feet.

The minimum 1,800 square feet is proposed for one elevation only.

Nickel Plate Arts Executive Director Aili McGill gave a brief update at the Noblesville Common Council Dec. 3 meeting.

PRESENTATION McGill discussed the organization’s 2019 goals, such as the NobleMade Gift Shop, events and promotions, public art, identifying steps for an arts master plan and visiting the nine other Indiana Arts Commission cultural districts.

McGill said trips to the cultural districts will allow Nickel Plate Arts to process data and create a 2020 arts master plan.

McGill said the NobleMade Gift Shop was the Nickel Plate Arts’ biggest project of 2019.

“Our goal this year was to open the doors and see how many Noblesville creators, makers and artists we could include in that space and get some sense on how people would react to a gift shop really full of Noblesville products,” McGill said. “We had more than 80 vendors, and 72 of those have sold at least one item. That’s a really huge sell rate.”

At the time of the council meeting, McGill said NobleMade had sold 998 items since opening. The average transaction was $29.79. Gross sales totaled $11,846.37. The gift shop has four part-time employees.

For 2020, some of the goals McGill cited are expanding Valentine’s Day experiences around the downtown, capitalizing on the annual Welcome to Fairyville event, creating more alley activation and continuing to expand and promote holiday events.

The second change of zoning request was for 17.87 acres in the southwest quadrant of Little Chicago Road and 191st Street for a development called Shafer Woods.

The request is for 31 new home lots, for a total of 32 lots because one house that is already on the property will remain. The development calls for a small structure to house activities, games or other events conducted by the development. There also will be a fire pit, a dry detention area and a landscape buffer.

NFD firefighter retires — Noblesville Fire Dept. Engineer Rob Wonnell retired after 26 years of service to the citizens of Noblesville.

He has been an EMT for 30 years, was one of the first Hazardous Materials Technicians with NFD and served on the HazMat and dive teams. He was recognized as the Employee of the Month by the City of Noblesville in April 2002 and was NFD’s Firefighter of the Year in 1994. He received letters of commendation in 2011 and 2017 for going above and beyond the call of duty. He has been an engineer since 1996, and he spent most of his years at Station 71.

VR comes to Fishers, Noblesville libraries

By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com Books are often the first things to come to mind when people think about libraries, TECHNOLOGY but Hamilton East Public Library has expanded its variety of services by adding virtual reality at its Fishers and Noblesville branches.

Last month, the branches devoted a day to unveiling the equipment and games.

“One of our guiding principles at HEPL is helping our patrons discover new possibilities,” Innovative Services Manager Brad Howell said. “We want to be a library that helps our patrons explore new territories and produce new experiences. HEPL is passionate about encouraging equity in our communities, and purchasing these devices will give everyone who lives in both Fishers and Noblesville the opportunity to explore the amazing experiences that virtual reality

Howell said the libraries purchased the highly rated Oculus Quest system to ensure users get an “exceptional VR experience without having to be plugged into a computer.”

“Although we plan on adding (more) apps in the future, we’ve added 12 games and experiences ranging

from ‘Mission ISS’ (experiencing life on the International Space Station) and ‘Vader Immortal’ (‘Star Wars’) to ‘Wander’ (visiting sites around the world) and ‘National Geographic Explorer’ (exploring Antarctica),” Howell said.

A total of four Oculus Quest systems were purchased so multiple people can play at the same time. Howell said having multiple systems also allows the library to offer drop-in programming centered on virtual reality.

Virtual reality experiences are limited to 15 minutes per person in order to meet demand. Anyone in sixth grade and above are allowed to use the systems.

From 9:30 to 11 a.m. Jan. 8 and 22, the Noblesville branch will offer events specifically for those 50 and older to learn how to use the VR equipment.

The Noblesville branch will conduct its open house from 2 to 4:30 p.m.

Riverview unveils new and improved infusion center designed on patient feedback

COVER STORY The Courtney Cox Cole Infusion Center opened last month. It is named after Cole, who died Sept. 22 at age 48 after a 5 1/2-year battle with lung cancer. She was a nonsmoker.

“Before Courtney’s passing, it was going to be named the Infusion Center at Riverview Health,” said Megan Wiles, executive director of the Riverview Health Foundation. “After Courtney’s passing, the family contacted me with interest in the center being named after her. So, of course, talking with the hospital leadership and the board, they were open to it.”

When Cole was first diagnosed in 2016, she was treated at Riverview Health’s former infusion center. Cole, who co-owned Hare Chevrolet with her sister Monica Peck, was a former standout basketball player and golfer at Noblesville High School and played both sports at Indiana University.

“The old center was an interior room of the hospital. No windows to the outside world, or even to a hallway,” Wiles said. “In the old center, patients were sitting in their treatment chairs, one basically right next to another. For the family members who were coming along to spend that time with them, there wasn’t a whole lot of privacy or space for them, either.”

Around that time, Cole, her family and several other patients offered suggestions to hospital leadership how the center could be improved. “(Riverview) really took a look at what they could start to do to make those improvements, to make it a better experience for the patients,” Wiles said. “Care has always been outstanding, and everybody loved the

memory from more than 250 individual gifts. In June, the Cox, Cole and Peck families also made a collective donation of $500,000 to directly benefit the construction of the new infusion center.

“As Hamilton County continues to grow, Riverview Health wants to continue to be able to meet the needs of that growing population,” Wiles said. “Sadly, this is one of those areas in the hospital that has seen an increase in patient numbers. People don’t want to have these types of treatments, but when they have to, why not provide it in a space that’s appealing?”

nurses. It just wasn’t a wonderful physical environment.”

Because of other projects – like implementation of a new electronic medical records system in 2017 and the new Westfield hospital opening in 2018 – the infusion center project was pushed to 2019, something Wiles said was actually beneficial.

“It gave us more time to sit and evaluate the designs and features,” she said. “Some of the patients who had been making recommendations, we would take the designs to them and get their feedback. Staff got a chance to have input to it as well.”

With more than 1,000 patient visits each month, the infusion center provides chemotherapy, blood transfusions, IV antibiotics and treatments for gastrointestinal disorders, among other patient services. Treatment times range from an hour to up to eight hours.

The infusion center is at the north end of the hospital. It is a multi-area

facility that allows each patient an option of environment when receiving treatments.

“We now offer what we call our social treatment areas, so if you’re having a good day and you want to hang out with other people, you can do that,” Wiles said. “Then we’ve got semi-private rooms that are next to the windows, and those have fireplaces, TVs and bench seating for family members. A majority of the patients have heated massaging treatment chairs. We also have several private rooms with beds.”

Riverview Health Foundation’s commitment to raise $1 million for the approximately $3.5 million overall project is under way, Wiles said.

In early November, the foundation hosted a masquerade ball fundraiser, which generated more than $175,000 in donations, all of which will go directly to the infusion center.

“We’ve been working with Nickel Plate Arts, and they helped us identify a local artist to create that (sculpture),” said Megan Wiles, executive director of the Riverview Health Foundation. “The artist, Rachel Kavathe, is working in conjunction with our landscape architect. The design she has come up with is four segments so that from any of the rooms with the windows, there’ll be a vantage point to the sculpture. The garden will be built and the sculptures installed, hopefully, in the spring.

“We will continue to raise money for this project. It’s just one of those things that speaks to people, and the community will be happy to continue to support with gifts made in (Cole’s) memory.

Since Courtney Cox Cole’s passing, the number of memorial gifts and the amount of money that we’ve raised from that unfortunate situation has been tremendous.”

Insatiable need

GOP shields Trump

Commentary by Terry Anker American pop singer and sister of famed super group siblings The Jackson Five, Janet Jackson — Miss Jackson, if you’re nasty — rewrote and performed the 1986 hit song “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” casting some shade on her ex-husband, singer James DeBarge, and asserting a “strong” counter to what had been widely perceived as a sweet pop persona. At the time, she attributed the mood of the album to be one of self-defense.

Whatever the motivation, the song has become, for some, at least, an anthem for demanding one’s due: “You may have been valuable to me in the past, but you need to be valuable to me now. If not, get out.” Perhaps it is inure to the human condition. We love those who seem to love us.

OK, but how far can one take the notion? What can we reasonably expect, or even demand, from those with whom we are in relationships?

Attention? Time? Physical appearance? Age? Gifts? Acquiescence?

Priority? In business, our intentions are drawn up in contracts with end dates, exits and provisions for renegotiation. We do X and Y, they do A and B, and we decide if we still like the deal every 24 months.

But, human interactions are more complicated. They rarely come with an end point. They always change, and we routinely fail to be rational.

But is our need reasonable or is it entirely insatiable?

Waging war in tinseltown Commentary by Danielle Wilson Today’s the day, friends. The Wilson Tinsel War is about to begin. I’m watching my husband HUMOR Doo prepare our obscenely large Douglas fir for lights, ornaments and, yes, the highly controversial artificial aluminum gorgeousness that is holiday tinsel.

See, 2019 is my year to decorate our 12-foot tannenbaum in the tradition of my youth. Luckily for our marriage, most of this Doo also enjoyed growing up. Employing fire-hazard, multi-colored ceramic lights, a hodge-podge of ornaments ranging from Waterford crystal to dry macaroni, we happily agree that the end product should be a gaudy narrative of our lives. Where we differ is the literal icing on the cake, and by that phrase I mean fake icicles on a tree. I grew up with a butt-load of tinsel covering every single reachable bough; he did not. And so for the past 20 years, in order to avoid copious

amounts of therapy, we have agreed on alternating.

In 2018, I silently endured a naked conifer, sad and dark without that silvery ‘wow’ factor. This December, it’s Doo’s turn to suck it up. The problem is, he’s not quite as accepting of a Danielle Christmas as I am of a Doo one. And, he’s indoctrinated our sons into his stupid way of thinking. Luckily, I have the girls on my side, and the aforementioned boy children are still away at college. Hopefully, this means the Tinsel War will be less Antietam and more Treaty of Paris.

Time will tell. I am waiting until the last possible moment to remind him, with photographic evidence, if necessary, that this is a tinsel year. Let the war begin!

Editor, I am outraged that as Donald Trump continues to act with impunity, the GOP is continuing to shield him from the consequences of his actions. It’s time for Republican representatives – mine, included – to stand up for the rule of law and support impeachment.

Trump’s attempts to pressure Ukraine to interfere in the 2020 election demonstrate that he is a danger to our democracy and the security of our elections. Thanks to whistleblower complaints, information released by the White House and the testimony of more than a half-dozen witnesses, we have proof that Trump withheld military aid to coerce the president of Ukraine to interfere in the 2020 election.

No American is above the law, especially the president. I believe Congress has no choice but to draft articles of impeachment and vote to impeach Donald Trump.

Democrats are bravely standing up for the rule of law and our democracy. It’s not too late for Republican representatives to do the same.

HSE grad, ex-Straight No Chaser member releases Christmas album

By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com For Ryan Ahlwardt, performing comes naturally. Since elementary school, he has taken to MUSIC the stage, but it was during his time as a student at Hamilton Southeastern High School that he became immersed in choir.

With an impressive résumé and a background of performing worldwide with a cappella group Straight No Chaser, Ahlwardt has recorded a new Christmas album, “Indiana Ryan Ahlwardt Christmas.”

Released last month, “Indiana Christmas” is filled with Ahlwardt’s versions and rearrangements of famous Christmas songs. The title track is an original written by Dan Ponce, founder of Straight No Chaser. Ponce wrote the song in 2008 for the group’s first Christmas album.

“I got Dan’s blessing to record the song for my first solo Christmas album and named the entire project after the song,” Ahlwardt said. “Having called Indiana home for 27 years, I knew ‘Indiana Christmas’ was the perfect name for the album. I wanted the album to sound like how Indiana has always felt to me – home.”

The album has 13 songs. Ahlwardt said his favorites, aside from “Indiana Christmas,” are “Hallelujah/O Holy Night” and a modernized version of “Auld Lang Syne,” which he co-wrote with Noblesville-based producer Matt Mellinger.

He earned a spot in the group that would gain worldwide attention in December 2007 when a member of the group uploaded a video of their performance of “The 12 Days of Christmas” to an up-andcoming website, YouTube. The video became the most shared video of 2007 and caught the attention of Craig Kallman, CEO of Atlantic Records, who quickly signed the group to the label.

“Our first album on Atlantic Records hit No. 1 on iTunes and has sold over 3 million copies to date,” Ahlwardt said. “As part of the professional group from 2008 to 2012, I was able to record an additional five albums, appear on two national PBS specials and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, perform on such iconic stages as the Royal Albert Hall in London, Hollywood Bowl in LA, and the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, and collaborate with such artists as Sara Bareilles, Barry Manilow, Take 6, Phil Collins and Stevie Wonder, to name a few.”

Ahlwardt left the group in 2012 to return to Fishers and lead the local chapter of Young Life, an outreach ministry for teenagers. He served in that position until 2018. Since then, he has worked as a full-time artist and vocalist, expanding his horizons to voice acting, working on projects for the Indianapolis Zoo, the state of Indiana and Eli Lilly. His voice also may be familiar to listeners of “Radio Theology,” a weekly show he co-hosts Sunday mornings on 99.5 WZPL. “Being a creative entrepreneur and small business owner in Fishers gives me the opportunity to provide for my family in one of the safest and most vibrant communities in America,” Ahlwardt said. “My personal and creative roots are here in Indiana, and I’m eager to see what the future holds for our family and the city and state we love to call home.”

Olivia is featured on “Indiana Christmas” on the song “Go Tell It on the Mountain.” Lauren sings a duet on “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” The two met while singing a cappella at IU. They regularly perform at weddings, parties and corporate events with their seven-piece ’90s cover band, Mixtape.

Dancers of all levels from En Pointe Indiana dance studio in Noblesville will present “An En Pointe Christmas” at 7 p.m. Dec. 20 and 2 p.m. Dec 21 at Noblesville High School’s auditorium, 18111 Cumberland Rd. “It’s based off of Smuin’s ‘The Christmas Ballet,’ and in that, Michael Smuin just wanted to introduce ballet to everyone, so it really offers a variety of different dances,” said Robert Moore, co-artistic director and co-owner of En Pointe Indiana Ballet with his wife, Pollyana Robeiro.

Let’s face it — the trajectory of our language is trending slangular (a word I’m GRAMMAR GUY confident I just invented). With the proliferation and pervasiveness of internet culture, slang is everywhere.

You know this is true when your grandma comments that your new shoes are “on fleek.” What is slang, and how should we properly utilize it in our communication?

It’s time to load up our slangshots to attempt to define slang.

Slang is informal language spoken by a specific group of people. These words and phrases incubate among particular groups, whether they be teenagers, minority groups or certain geographical regions. Slang starts conversationally, whether or not it ever translates into written language.

Using slang is a way for individuals to communicate with their own set of words that help them to identify as

part of a group.

Slang isn’t jargon. Jargon is language that applies to a particular professional group. For instance, you’ll hear tons of medical jargon in a TV hospital drama: “The patient has a localized, sub-therapeutic, idiopathic, epidermal pathogen that needs to be stabilized, stat!” To be honest, I have no idea what any of that means; however, since these seemingly foreign terms are specific to the medical community, they count as jargon, not slang.

Let’s walk through an incomplete recent history of slang with examples. In the ’20s, if you called your sandwich the “bee’s knees” or “cat’s pajamas,” you’d be saying that it was a particularly good sandwich. In the 1950s, if you had a shiner (black eye), you might want to cover it up with a pair of shades (sunglasses). In the 1960s, you’d be bummed out (depressed) if a choice babe (pretty girl) rejected your advances. If you’re still telling people to “talk to the hand,”

the 1990s called from their gigantic cellphone; they want their slang term for a scornful rejection of what someone has said back.

Use slang in informal situations: In conversations, at parties, online and when communicating with people with whom you already have a well-developed rapport. Don’t use slang on your resume, in a job interview, in a Nobel prize acceptance speech, or in any kind of formal writing — which includes business emails.

Although I’m a fan of slang, you need to exercise caution when using it, especially in writing. A misplaced use of “off the chain” in the wrong context will not only lose you style points, but it could also hurt your chances of getting ahead at work.

The living room featured built-in cabinets and an electric fireplace that didn’t have much style. The owners wanted an update and a more modern feel to complement other updates around the home.
