Deer ‘breaks’ into school

The school resource officer responded immediately, and students and staff were placed on a lock-down to ensure they remained in their rooms. School staff directed the deer out the front doors. The deer then ran into the nearby woods. No students or staff were harmed during the incident.

Supt. Niedermeyer’s focus on students’ safety

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com A consistent theme ran through Noblesville Schools Supt. Beth Niedermeyer’s State of the EDUCATION Schools address.

“We know if students don’t feel safe and cared for, then they can’t learn,” Niedermeyer said at the Oct. 30 Noblesville Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Purgatory Golf Club. “Everything we do at Noblesville Schools is centered (on) doing what is best for kids.That includes keeping updated on research.”

She said later start times for high school and middle school students have been effective because they come to school more rested.

“Then for elementary students when they are starting to get weary and tired, it’s time for them to go home,” Niedermeyer said.

A referendum was passed in November 2018, providing $50 million during the course of eight years.

“We honored everything we said we were going to do with that referendum, focusing on three areas, safety, mental health and compensation for our staff, making sure we are keeping our salaries competitive,” Niedermeyer said. “We were pleased to dive right in. We got the referendum funds in June and began immediately hiring a new safety director and making some changes to our mental health (program).”

Niedermeyer said the school has instituted 40 safety measures since the Noblesville West Middle School shooting incident in May 2018, when a then-13-year-old student wounded teacher Jason Seaman and classmate Ella Whistler. There are now full-time school resource officers in every school.

There also are 11 new social workers, which are in all the schools. More than 20 mental health initiatives have been implemented and are available on the district’s website, noblesvilleschools. org. The safety measures are detailed on the website as well.

Videos of school leaders were presented to inform the audience of various initiatives, including the launching of a Noblesville Diversity Coalition Student Ambassador Team at the high school.

Niedermeyer said the district works hard to make sure it is a good steward of taxpayer dollars.

“We take this responsibility seriously and make sure we are managing your money very cautiously and very conservatively when it comes to spending,” Niedermeyer said.

Since 2009, when changes were made in state funding and property tax revenue, Noblesville Schools has lost $49.4 million in funds.

“We’ve lost almost $2 million to the private school voucher funding over the last three years,” Niedermeyer said. “That has significant impact on how we do business as public schools. Schools across Indiana have that challenge.”

In addition, Niedermeyer presented retiring Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear with a Noblesville Schools pin.

Prior to becoming mayor, Ditslear was elected to three terms on the Noblesville School Board.

“He collaborated with the schools and Noblesville Police Dept. to bring resource officers into our schools,” Niedermeyer said. “He’s been a vocal supporter on the importance of public school funding and made testimonials for our referendums.”

“Carmel is the gold standard for Indiana high school soccer, so I was pleased with the matchup. If you want to win a state championship, what better way to do it than play the undefeated defending state champion, who happens to be our biggest rival?” he said. “I knew we’d show up to play, and we did.”

The Millers edged Carmel 1-0 in the Class 3A state championship game Nov. 2 at Fishers High School to capture the first state title in its girls soccer history. Noblesville, which finished 17-0-3, had tied host Carmel 1-1 Sept. 23.

“It was a mix of both wanting to cry and smile all at the same time,” Millers senior co-captain Carly Hudnall said of the title. “We worked so hard for this, and to see it all pay off just warmed my heart. We had the whole community behind us, and seeing all of them smile and cheer for us was so special, and that’s what made it so special. We were playing for something much bigger than just a state title.

“We were playing for our commu-

nity, our friends and family. It’s a pretty awesome feeling, one I’ll never forget.”

The team’s mantra has been, “We Are Together.”

“But this year I feel like we were genuinely 100 percent together,” senior co-captain Sydney Anderson said. “We all made it a goal before the year even started to win state, not only because that’s such a cool accomplishment, but also because that meant we’d have more time with each other. We all just loved being together. We truly are all best friends.”

Junior Jenna Chatterton, who led the Millers with 13 goals and 14 assists, delivered an assist to sophomore Kiana Siefert on the winning goal early in the second half.

“Jenna Chatterton has a unique skill set, which strikes fear in every defender she faces and makes her part of every coach’s game plan,” Brady said.

Noblesville junior goalkeeper Sarah Kile had seven saves.

“The defense has been good all season, and that’s everyone on the field, because we don’t just defend when the opponent is close to our goal. We defend as a team all over the field,” Brady said. “Specifically, those five players who played in the back, and our goalkeeper, could not have played any better in the state championship game.”

A new home Preservation Alliance establishes headquarters, deem it Preservation Hall

By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com A historic building just a few blocks off the downtown square soon will be the home of the COVER STORY Noblesville Preservation Alliance.

Last month, the nonprofit purchased the building, most recently known as Logan Street Sanctuary at 1274 Logan St., for its headquarters. It now is called Preservation Hall.

“I think (previous owner John Gilmore) was just tired of the management part of it and being responsible for the building,” NPA Vice President Sandy Stewart Stewart said. “He did an incredible thing for the community by getting the ball rolling and getting music started in this space. He wanted it to go to someone who would continue some of the things that were going on here.”

Logan Street Sanctuary, a nonprofit that has since rebranded as Community Education Arts, Inc., in recent years has held performances by local musicians and comedians in the building, which they rented from Gilmore. The organization also presents the annual book publishing Polk Street Review, the Noblesville Interdisciplinary Creativity Expo and other activities.

Now, NPA wants to open the space more by making it a home base for its public events, like the annual historic home and holiday home tours and NobleStories, and members-only events, such as movie nights, cookouts and resource events that range from project-based workshops for members

to restoring historic features of their homes to classes on researching a home’s history.

“Another one of the ways we’re going to support the building is by renting it out to the community,” Stewart said. “We’re hoping to have weddings and other types of parties and celebrations here. We’ve been really looking at the types of events we can bring here because we now have a dedicated facility.”

NPA made the purchase official Oct. 15 and is applying a $75,000 endangered structures loan from Indiana Landmarks to help fund renovations and changes to the building.

“That loan carries a covenant that the building can never be torn down and that we have to restore the exterior as much as possible,” Stewart said. “It’s interest-free for one year, so we are kicking off a fundraising campaign where we’ll have naming opportunities in the building where you can name a pew, window or tables. So, it’s really important that we raise $75,000 in a year.”

“We’re going to renovate the whole outside eventually,” NPA Treasurer Mike Corbett said. “That’s one of the things that Indiana Landmarks is requiring, Corbett for us to renovate the outside and try and restore it.”

Although some outside work has begun, a majority of the renovations have been to the building’s interior – such as removing walls in the basement, painting, cleaning and adding décor.

Besides having a place to call home, Preservation Hall solves many logistical problems for NPA. “In the past couple of years during our holiday home tour, people (whose houses are on the tour) have served food in their homes,” Stewart said.

“Instead of doing that in each home, we’ll have the party at Preservation Hall. We’ll decorate and have everyone

start the tour here. We also used to pay to have NobleStories here, and we also now have a dedicated meeting space with this building. City Hall has been very good to host us, but there have been times where they’ve needed that space, but the biggest thing is storage.”

“Our stuff is spread all over the city in basements, garages, in the interurban building at Forest Park and in the basement of Noblesville Main Street,” Corbett said. “This building will allow us to consolidate that.”

Overall, the NPA’s mission of saving and preserving historic properties falls perfectly in line with its move into the building. Because it sits among single-family homes in a downtown residential area, when ownership changes, it has always been at risk of being lost or becoming something other than a gathering space for the public.

“This building was a church for a long time, but before that, it had been an Army barracks in Ohio, and Young it was moved here on the railroad in 1938,” NPA board member Dottie Young said. “Then, it was a couple of different churches, and the last one was the Logan Street Pentecostal Church (now on South 10th Street).”

More than three decades old, NPA

was founded when Noblesville’s historic Craig House was in danger of being torn down. The organization worked to save the home, moving it across the street at 1250 E. Conner St. NPA also has been an integral part of preserving and renovating other historically significant Noblesville structures, including Potter’s Bridge and the Sheriff’s Residence and Jail on the downtown square. The organization also offers a façade grant program, a Century Plaque program for homes more than 100 years old and other awards programs.

“This organization has done extraordinary things for the last 33 years, all volunteer with no real home base until now,” Stewart said. “When I first joined, I was amazed at what this group has been able to accomplish.”

Balancing act

The Convention of States Project

Commentary by Terry Anker Do you want the good news or the bad? Conventional wisdom teaches us to get the bad out of the way first. Let’s confront the broccoli before we enjoy the dessert.

It probably is not a bad idea. If we frame our thinking in terms of the most difficult at the outset, we are better equipped to handle tough challenges when fresh and enjoy the upside after the battle.

This approach to life is time-tested to provide superior long-term results, yet much of modern life seems to be predicated on anything but the “long-term.” Companies squeeze reinvestment in favor of executive bonuses. Governments provide generous benefits instantly while knowingly off-laying the responsibility to pay for those programs on future generations. And nonprofits are lauded for meeting today’s needs, not tomorrow’s. Executives and officials are measured on a quarterly (or daily) basis. If we don’t produce right now, there may be no later.

Have we developed a culture of urgency at the expense of one that values planning and investment?

We prefer immediate returns and satisfaction while shunning the accounting for it all. Can we build a house without a solid foundation?

Can we have a stable forest of only fast-growing trees? Can we put the cart before the horse?

A bias for action is good, and we often eat too much at dinner to fully enjoy dessert. Still, can’t we find a healthy balance?

IDs and Jell-O shots Commentary by Danielle Wilson Our oldest turned 21 a few weeks ago. Can you believe it? I know! Based on my photo, you probaHUMOR bly put me at, what, 32?

Maybe 33? Alas, I’m much closer to 50 than my still all-natural hair color might suggest. And though I thought I would feel old celebrating with the birthday boy down in Bloomington, or at the very least uncomfortable as I watched him legally throwback Jell-O shots, my concerns were entirely unfounded.

I quite enjoyed seeing him as an adult and not feeling the need to “mother him.” His life, his choices. Did I internally debate cleaning his apartment, getting him a jacket, or telling him to eat something to absorb the alcohol? Of course! Once a mommy, always a mommy. But I was able to suppress every maternal instinct I had and marvel at the decent job we did in parenting him. As an added bonus, I was carded not once, but twice,

even as my husband, Doo, was waved through. I still have it, folks!

And in some respects, so does Doo. He summoned his college-boy spirit and dove headfirst into the fray, matching his young apprentices drink for drink and crashing on an “if-thisthing-could-talk” couch overnight. At least, I think, that’s what happened.

Per my usual, I bailed on the bar scene fairly early, once an intense game of “Sink the Biz” started and a doable plan to get Doo back to Indy was proposed. He has yet to return, by the way. But what could possibly go wrong?

So, I guess I’m good with having older kids. And apparently, abandoning Doo at IU. Peace out.

Indiana’s unemployment rate still falling — Two positive takeaways from Indiana’s August employment report: The state’s unemployment rate recently fell to its lowest level in 18 months, and the number of unemployment insurance claims dropped to their lowest level this year. Indiana’s jobless rate dipped in August to a preliminary 3.3% from 3.4% in July, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. The rate in Indiana hasn’t been that low since February 2018, when it stood at 3.3% for three consecutive months starting in December 2017. In addition, the number of Hoosiers filing for unemployment benefits in August dropped to 14,048, the lowest amount in a single month so far this year. The unemployment rate has decreased 7.3 percentage points since July 2009, the low point of employment, ranking 8th in the nation.

‘Beauty and the Beast’ to be staged at Noblesville High School

“Keeping everyone on track to finish the tasks, both on stage and off, is a lot of work,” said Neubauer, who is directing the musical and also is NHS’s director of choirs. “Luckily, we have qualified directors, assistants, stage managers and student leadership. I ask someone to do something, and it is done.”

Neubauer has been preparing for the four shows since spring. The shows will be staged at 7 p.m. Nov. 14-16 and 1 p.m. Nov. 16. Kelsey Maxwell is the assistant director and Shantel Morris is the choreographer.

“We announced that we’d chosen ‘Beauty and the Beast’ before school let out (for summer break),” Neubauer said. “We have been rehearsing since mid-August. It’s crunch-time now.”

“The best part about playing Beast is experimenting with the physicality of his character,” Francis said. “Everything he does, all the Senior Leah Spurlock rehearses as Belle for the upcoming performances of “Beauty and the Beast” at Noblesville High School.

Similar to the 1997 animated and 2017 live-action film adaptations, Neubauer said the school’s presentation follows the same script that won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1994.

“It is a fantasy. Bringing a fantasy to life on stage is tricky without (computer-generated imagery) and film effects, but high school theaters have been doing this type of show for a long time,” Neubauer said. “Some of the best ideas for effects come from the creative minds of students. This particular show is quite famous for its production numbers and costuming. We’re working hard to live up to expectations.”

NEMS stages ‘Annie Jr.’

THEATER Since age, 3 she’s taken acting classes, and at age 5, she earned her first onstage role in a production of “Cinderella” at the Belfry Theater.

Now, at age 13, she’s playing the lead role of Annie in the Noblesville East Middle School Drama Club’s production of “Annie Jr.” Landing the part is personal for McMillan, who grew up with a love for the 1982 film adaptation. She’s even using her own dog, Rocky, a golden retriever who will play the role of Sandy, Annie’s dog. And with long, dark hair, she’ll don a red, curly wig during the three performances.

“I’ve always loved the ‘Annie’ movie,” McMillan said. “I watched it so many times when I was little. I’ve just always wanted that role.” This is the second time McMillan has been in a

Shore Temple of India Commentary by Don Knebel The Shore Temple is one of the most visited sites in southern India.

It may once have been TRAVEL a part of a much larger religious complex, now lost to the sea.

In the first millennium A.D., Mamallapuram, about 40 miles south of the modern city of Chennai (once known as Madras), was one of two important ports along the Bay of Bengal. Beginning in the seventh century, the powerful and creative Pallava Dynasty, which conducted trade and diplomatic missions from Mamallapuram, began constructing a series of imposing religious structures near the port, the most famous being the Pancha Rathas (Five Chariots), carved from a single outcropping of granite. To the east of the Pancha Rathas, almost at water’s edge, is the so-called “Shore Temple,” built between 700 and 728 A.D. The Shore Temple is actually three temples erected on a single platform.

All three are in the shape of a pyramid, erected from blocks of granite, making them among the oldest such structures in southern India. Two of

the temples honor Shiva, considered the supreme god by many Hindus. A smaller temple is devoted to Vishnu, another important Hindu deity. In the five-story main Shiva temple, which opens to the rising sun, the deity is represented by the Shiva Lingam, a glistening phallic-like stone representing fertility.

When Marco Polo visited the coast of the Bay of Bengal in 1292, he reported seeing what he described as “Seven Pagodas.” The Shore Temple was probably at least one (or perhaps three) of those pagodas. The devastating tsunami in December 2004 temporarily uncovered another temple constructed from granite blocks just offshore, leading to speculation that the rest of the seven pagodas are now under the Bay of Bengal. The area including the Pancha Rathas and the Shore Temple is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
