Schools again expand technology resources

At the start of the 2018-19 school year, Noblesville Schools students in kindergarten, first, second and third grades iPADS were issued iPads for the first time, expanding the one-to-one (1:1) initiative district-wide.

“We actually don’t use the term ‘1:1’ anymore because it has actually grown beyond that,” said Andrew Swickheimer, director of technology at Noblesville Schools. “Now, we call it a technologically enhanced classroom.

What that means is it’s just another tool that our students and teachers have access to.

We are fortunate enough that we don’t have to leave and go to a computer lab to have some of those digital experiences. Instead, those things can ebb and flow throughout the day as the teacher finds them appropriate.”

Several years ago, the district formed a committee made up of parents, students, teachers and administrators to map out a plan for digital learning.

“We’ve been really deliberate in how we’ve implemented technology in the classroom,” Swickheimer said. “We started (grades) nine through 12, then we added six through eighth, and then we did fifth grade, then fourth, and now we’re doing K-3. It’s actually been a span of like five years, and the way that we’ve made that work is we’ve put in place pilot classrooms to help kind of empower those innovators. So, we did that with

K-3, too, and we saw really positive results.”

Criticism of 1:1 learning in school districts often revolves around questions about funding and about students using an electronic device for extensive periods of time, both of which Swickheimer and other district officials said is not an issue with this expansion.

“One of the misnomers we hear sometimes is they think a kindergartener is going to be on a computer all day, which is not accurate,” said Marnie Cooke, director of marketing and communications at Noblesville Schools. “It’s really just one tool in the toolbox. Kids are still reading real books and still writing with paper and pencil. It’s just something else that’s available, not something they’re going to be using all day, especially with the younger ages.”

Per funding, district administrators said fees did not increase for students in kindergarten through third grade because of access to iPads, and they do not pay a technology fee like students in grades four through 12 since they won’t be taking the devices home.

“We’ve been able to get a positive return on investment with some of our iPads,” Swickheimer said. “These are actually iPads we have been using for four years at another grade level. So, we’re repurposing them and using them in the K-3 classrooms.

“There has always been technology in the classroom, but now that you have (a device) available for every student, you can personalize education a lot more.”

NFD pancake breakfast — The Noblesville Fire Dept. Auxiliary’s annual all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast and open house at Noblesville Fire Station No. 71, 135 S. Ninth St., is set for 7 to 11 a.m. Oct. 6. The breakfast is $5, but in addition to the meal, firefighters will be handing out smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to those in need. There also will be truck demonstrations, a safety trailer, a wood fire house that kids can spray with a hose, station tours and the opportunity to meet and talk with Noblesville firefighters. The breakfast and open house will kick off Fire Safety Week, which is held each year nationwide to help educate people about fire prevention and safety. For more, call the NFD at 317-776-6336.

Animal blessing — Roots of Life church in Noblesville will host a blessing of animals Oct. 7 at Federal Hill Commons. The event is free, and the public is invited to bring cats, dogs, and other critters – caged, leashed or otherwise restrained for Pastor Teri Ditslear to bless. Work recently began to transform the intersection of 19th and Pleasant streets in Noblesville.

ROADS The existing three-leg intersection with 19th Street regulated by a stop sign will be converted to a single-lane roundabout. City officials said the work will make the intersection safer and more efficient to vehicles traveling east/west on Pleasant Street and vehicles trying to turn onto Pleasant Street.

City officials said the project will help with difficulty turning off of 19th Street onto Pleasant Street, either with an obstructed view from other vehicles, or long stretches of traffic going through the intersection, which is adjacent to the Noblesville Post Office at 1900 Pleasant St. The project will cost approximately $1 million, but because of funding received from the Indiana Dept. of Transportation, the City of Noblesville’s portion is $194,284.

the work zone. Construction crews will be on-site as the intersection is open to traffic.

However, a 21-day closure on 19th Street is planned for the first part of this month.

During this time, entrance to the post office will be through a temporary access off of Pleasant Street.

New lighting and sidewalks also will be installed in the area.

According to the city, approximately 15,000 vehicles travel through the intersection daily.

Woofstock, the family FUNDRAISER and pet-friendly festival, hosted by the Humane Society for Hamilton County, is back for the 10th consecutive year.

Guests can peruse vendors, purchase items from food trucks, have a beer at the Metazoa Beer Garden and listen to The Doo! band and Shiny Penny perform.

“In the kids’ tent there will be performances all day by Hedgehog Hannah,” said Rebecca Stevens, executive director of HSHC. “There is a cool zone where the dogs can go for a swim. It’s really an event for the whole family.”

The day is centered on the 10th Annual Woofstock Survivor Charity Walk.

“That program is what funds 100 percent of all the life-saving and emergency medical care we provide thousands of animals a year,” Stevens said. “We rely completely on donations to fund medical supplies.”

HAND conference examines affordable housing

Noblesville-based HAND, a nonprofit that focuses on housing for low- and moderateincome individuals in IndiaCOUNTY napolis suburbs, recently held its annual suburban housing conference with Fishers Mayor Scott Fatness as the keynote speaker. Fadness has seen his role change from a town manager to Fishers’ first elected mayor in 2014, and with that he said came one important realization.

“Elected officials like to stay elected.

It’s their singular obsession, that’s what I’ve learned,” Fadness said at the event at Cambria Hotel in Westfield. “They constantly contemplate, How do I stay elected? If anyone thinks for one second that affordable housing was something popular with the masses that vote, that they wouldn’t do it, you are sorely mistaken. They all shy away from this particular conversation because it’s an ugly conversation for them.”

Fadness said irrationality festers with the subject and emails fly, Facebook posts and tweets are posted by groups and people who are against everything.

“The worst of human nature comes to the forefront (with concern over home values dropping),” Fadness said.

But Fadness said the conversation should be addressed in a broader sense, and that an integrated housing policy is necessary for the long-term sustainability of a community.

“Which I actually do believe. We become more productive as a society when you have this serendipitous collection of people from different backgrounds,” Fadness said.

“One of the things we talk about with our schools is we need to have diversity, and it always comes back to race. I would argue in Hamilton County what is more ostracized from being a different race is being from a different socio-economic class.”

Shell Barger, a RE/MAX realtor in Carmel, knows how hard is it to find affordable housing for buyers in Hamilton County.

“To qualify for a $175,000 home, bare minimum, you have to make $45,000 income and

that means no car (payment), no student loans, no debt,” Barger said. “So, you make $50,000 with some debt, who are these people that make that? They’re our firefighters, police officers, our public servants. In Carmel, there are three on the market. It’s a seller’s market.”

Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton is seeing similar issues in his community.

“Our redevelopment commission was asked to subsidize a bus to get workers from Marion County to Boone County to Whitestown, specifically,” Norton said. “We’ve given a tax abatement to said company, millions of dollars. We’ve proudly subsidized some of the infrastructure that has been built to allow them to be there. They said now we can’t find workers. Would you go ahead and subsidize a bus to get the workers from Marion County to Whitestown? Are you serious? That was kind of our reaction.”

Norton said Whitestown’s population was 450 in 2008 and is now 9,700.

“We’ve developed on the backs of industries that cannot find workers in the community where their industry is built,” Norton said. “It’s crazy.”

Norton said many oppose workforce housing because they are worried it will be subsidized housing and affect home values.

“Maybe the suburban communities help Indianapolis rebuild its product,” Norton said. “A strong Indianapolis is a strong central Indiana, a strong Whitestown, a strong Fishers, a strong Carmel and a strong Whitestown.”

Humane Society earns grant to save senior dogs — The Grey Muzzle Organization recently announced recipients of its annual grants, naming the Humane Society for Hamilton County as one of the beneficiaries. HSHC is one of 66 animal welfare groups in 30 states who were chosen from more than 300 applicants to receive a grant to help local senior dogs. “This grant will help us give senior dogs the veterinary and dental care they needs to be ready for a forever home,” said Missy Wright, director of Marketing at HSHC.

Club teams offer rugby for all ages

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com A Noblesville club team offers age-group rugby to co-ed students, beginning in second grade through 12th grade.

SPORTS Normally, rugby is played in the spring with 15 players per team, but the club will offer a new option this fall, where games are played with seven players on each team.

“It’s a really good option because it teaches the kids how to think and how to work together as a team,” flag rugby coach Drew Kinslow said. “One thing with rugby is it doesn’t matter what position you are on that field, anyone can score.”

Kinslow said the younger teams play flag rugby. Kids don’t play tackle rugby until they reach fifth or sixth grade. Kinslow also noted injuries happen less frequently in rugby than football.

“It’s probably the most family oriented sport I’ve ever seen because after every single game, whichever team is the home team hosts a social afterwards,” Kinslow said. “One really cool thing is when kids are playing long enough, they have the opportunity to move up from our league into various other ones.”

OBITUARY Thomas Louis Werler, 47, Noblesville, died from a pulmonary embolism on Sept. 24.

He was born Jan. 15, 1971, in Indianapolis, the son of William L. and Kathleen (Ham) Werler. He married Anna Yotter Feb. 3, 1996.

Werler was a 1989 graduate of Noblesville High School, where he played all four years on the golf team. He then attended Indiana University in Bloomington for four years.

While at IU, he began working at Progolf and continued for several years before beginning his career at Charles Schwab.

Tom was an avid golfer. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and playing poker.

He was a sports enthusiast and a fan of the Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. He was a devoted father, husband and son. He is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Anna Werler, two sons, Nathaniel “Nate”, 19, and Christopher George “CG”, 15, parents William and Kathleen Werler, sister Carolyn (Rich) Broyles, and father-in-law and his wife, Charles and Sue Yotter. His mother-in-law and her husband, Linda and Jim Haskins, preceded him in death. A celebration of life was held Sept. 29 at Wolfie’s Lakeside Grill in Noblesville. Fall season highlights archaeology at Strawtown Koteewi

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com For the 17th consecutive year, staff members at Strawtown Koteewi Park in Noblesville are showcasing archaeology throughout. September was the COVER STORY statewide recogntion of Archaeology Month, but staff at the park have turned the initiative into a seasonal event.

“We’ve participated since 2001, and we do a lot of programming,” said Christy Brocken, historical resource specialist at Strawtown Koteewi Park. “In one year, we see approximately 4,000 come through. For us, it used to be Archaeology Month (in September), but now it’s really Archaeology Fall. It starts at the end of August and goes through October, with some programming into November.

In addition to school field trips, we also do programming on Saturdays for the general public.”

Brocken is an archaeologist. Before joining Hamilton County Parks and Recreation in 2006, she worked as a contract archaeologist. Her master’s degree, however, is in museum studies, and she said she now considers herself more of a museum professional.

Brocken’s job at Strawtown Koteewi Park involves hours of cataloging thousands of artifacts into the park’s digital cataloging system. There are more than 14,200 catalogues in the database, and each can record up to 200 items found at the park. Many of those items are on display in the park’s Taylor Center for Natural History during archaeology progrmaming, including pieces of tools that are estimated to be approximately 10,500 years old.

“This is the fourth year we’ve done a lecture series where we invite archaeological professionals from across the state to give a lecture to the general public on their current research or research topics that they’re passionate about or have a long history with,” Brocken said.

Brocken said in celebrating archaeology at Strawtown Koteewi Park, the staff focuses on how the 750-acre site in north Noblesville fits into the science.

“At Strawtown Koteewi, with just the foodways, we have found ethnobotanical remains from our archaeology sites,” she said. “We have lots of pottery that we’ve recovered from the site. The science and methodology of archaeology is across the board, so just getting people introduced to archaeology, that there is a science, and there is a lot that goes into it, (is a goal).”

Nature hikes around the property are popular, especially for school groups visiting the site.

“We like to get the kids on the property and walking around looking at some of the native plants that we have and some of the things that people who, when they were living here, may have utilized,” Brocken said. “We also talk

about the history of the park property, the people who once lived here, what we’ve uncovered from the archaeological excavations and how that’s informed us about what the past lifeways were.

“We know they were maze agriculturalists. They were farming corn on a large scale. Those are just some of the things we’ve learned about from studying them through archaeology.”

Despite thousands of items having been found, Brocken said less than 1 percent of the park property has been excavated.

“Even our most heavily excavated sites have been excavated at less than or just at 1 percent,” Brocken said. “Just from that we’ve learned a great deal. There’s always more to learn and re-analyze and look at collections.”

Archaeology also factors into the parks department’s plans when it looks to expand services by developing new attractions on the property.

“We contract with a (professional archaeologist) who does oversee any kind of project or development that we do on this property,” Brocken said. “One of the things that Hamilton County Parks did when it purchased the property was to survey the entire property, a pedestrian survey where archaeological teams went out and mapped and documented where any archaeological sites are. We’ve discovered that we have over 144 different and distinctive sites on the property, four of which are listed on the national register.”

LETTER Thanks to parking task force

On origins Commentary by Terry Anker We use them every day, these aphorisms. Old sayings and collective shorthand keep our conversations moving and meanings clear. Still, we so often forget from where they hail. We can use our favorite search engine to inquire as to the expression’s etymology, yet to rely blindly on a single entry can be foolish. We are required to surf from site to site seeking some intellectual satisfaction that each appearance is not a simple duplication of another.

The maxims themselves suffer from the same echo. Modern speakers will sample the words and concepts from earlier generations and co-opt them as their own, so the able-word historian will push back ever further looking for an accurate origin point. Many are found rooted in the Bible. Much of our collective literary and oratory memory commences there. But others can be directly or loosely traced to the earliest scrolls, clay tablets or hieroglyphs, leaving one to wonder if much of human thought has been consistent from our genesis.

It suggests, in part, that our thinking has been conscientiously, and unconscientiously, formed by all that we’ve heard or read – and perhaps by all that’s been heard or read by everyone that we’ve heard or read. Is the collection of human wisdom a thread rather than an evolution? Or, do we legitimately process information and ideas anew with each subsequent presentation to fresh generations?

Among the many adages with foggy attributions is an old favorite: Talk is cheap because supply exceeds demand. Perhaps it doesn’t matter who gets the acclaim as long as the concepts are urged to persist.

Hitting all the wrong notes Commentary by Danielle Wilson I learned something about myself this week, people: I am terrible at karaoke. I know! It came as a surprise HUMOR to me, too, but it turns out I only know the words to about seven songs, and anything by Cyndi Lauper is too high for my vocal range.

Granted, I have no vocal range, nor can I really sing. Usually, what I lack in talent I make up for in showmanship and pure enthusiasm. But this past Friday, while launching the new “Passing Period Karaoke” initiative in the social studies hallway where I teach (we are in a quasi-competition with science over which department is more fun), I learned even rock-solid rhythm and superb snapping can’t save someone from the embarrassment of belting out the wrong line or mumbling through a forgotten chorus as a throng of confused but highly entertained teens captures every moment

on social media.

Luckily, I wasn’t alone. Several other teachers, including younger, hipper ones, struggled to accurately sing along to Billy Joel, Neil Diamond and the Village People. We did a pretty good job with “My Girl” and the national anthem, but other than those we couldn’t find an appropriate song that everyone knew. Of course, later, as I rehashed my missed opportunity for internet fame, I came up with several that I would have nailed, including but not limited to, “Let It Go” from “Frozen,” and the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way.” Also, anything from “The Sound of Music,” though Broadway doesn’t generally play well with the under-20 crowds.

Editor, The discussion of the Levinson project beginning reminded me of a group of behind-the-scenes individuals who have been committed to the betterment of downtown without being recognized. I wanted to take a minute and thank the Downtown Parking Task Force members.

The Parking Task Force was created to examine and address concerns that were expressed about parking in downtown Noblesville.

Since its formation, the group has compiled and evaluated a master list of parking issues expressed by the public and other stakeholders. It also reviewed hard data related to regulations, patterns, capacity, demand, accessibility, signage and the enforcement process and conducted a survey to gauge various options to help solve parking concerns.

Because of their perseverance, the City of Noblesville is here today with a plan to end the parking debate for years to come.

Again, I thank each and every task force member for their hard work. I am excited to see where this next phase takes the city.

Eyeing the myopia epidemic

Commentary by Dr. Matthew Clark

It is estimated that by 2050, more than half of the world’s population will be myopic, or nearsighted. In EYE HEALTH Asia, the numbers are more astonishing, as a study of South Korean 19-year-olds found that 96.5 percent of these teens were nearsighted.

The main cause of myopia is genetics.

However, with a trend like this, there must be something else at play. You guessed it: digital devices. While genetics set the potential for nearsightedness, the endpoint is highly related to environment. Phones and tablets are only becoming more prevalent in school, after school and socially. It is likely that the prevalence of myopia will continue to rise as well.

So, what can we do about it? Although we may not be able to prevent a child from becoming nearsighted, the goal is to keep them from becoming so myopic that they develop a higher risk of retinal complications. The goal is to keep it at bay so that they can hang around the house without glasses on or make it to the bathroom at night without feeling around the bedside table for their specs. To throttle this progression, there are two contact lens options to

discuss with your eye-care provider.

• Multifocal soft contact lenses – These lenses, called distance-centered multifocals, are the same lenses many adults wear in their 40s. The lenses work by relieving some of the focusing stress on the eyes when reading or looking at devices. These lenses have been shown to reduce myopia progression by up to 40 percent.

• Orthokeratology – Ortho K is the use of hard lenses worn at night to reshape the cornea. In the morning the lenses are removed and vision is clear throughout the day. A 2017 study showed that this practice may reduce myopia progression by as much as half.

If you and your spouse both start each day with glasses or contacts, and you suspect your child is headed for a similar fate, discuss these options with your eye doctor.

If we can send these kids off to college as a -2.00 instead of a -4.50, then we’ve succeeded in improving their quality of life forever.

Heartland Film Festival features executive producer Pauszek’s documentary ‘Grateful’

By Renee Larr editorial@youarecurrent.com “Grateful” is a 17-minute documentary that tells the story of Jenni Berebitsky, who is battling ALS. She was diin March 2009 and was FILM agnosed given 18 to 24 months to live. The film explores her passion for living in the face of insurmountable odds.

The film was screened in July at the Indy Shorts International Film Festival Presented by Heartland International Film Festival. The documentary won the Audience Choice Award presented by Indiana Spotlight.

“That’s the most prestigious award because it tells the film industry that our film was chosen by the audience,” said Executive Producer/Producer Amy Pauszek, whose Where’s Amy photo column appears in Current publications.

The film was screened at the Sept. 27-29 Circle City Film Festival.

“Jenni’s story will warm your heart while teaching us to live an engaging, productive and meaningful life,” Pauszek said.

“I promise you will leave this film with tears of love, hope, inspiration and laughter. It’s uplifting and will change your outlook on life and those you love.”

“Grateful” also will be shown in the Indy Shorts Winners Program No. 1 at the Oct. 11-21 Heartland International Film Festival.

“We’re so excited because it’s such a prestigious festival to be in,” Pauszek said. “‘Grateful’ is a must-see film for everyone at the 2018 Heartland International Film Festival.”

Pauszek, a Geist resident, plans to submit the film to additional film festivals.

“We’ve sent it off to others and we’re hoping to get into more,” she said. “People really love it. This film will help anyone who has experienced ALS or any type of life-threatening illness. It shows there is hope, and through family and friends anybody can get through these obstacles.”

This year’s event marked the 21st annual festival, which has become the second-biggest festival in Carmel, behind only CarmelFest. The Arts Festival – presented this year

by Current Publishing ­- hosted more than 30,000 people during the two-day event.

The festival awarded more than $6,000 in cash prizes to selected artists. That included a Best of Show award, Mayor’s Choice award and prizes handed out in specific media categories.

What to get: Fish tacos Price: $8 Anna’s take: MashCraft Fishers is a relatively new brewery that opened in winter 2017. It also has locations in Greenwood and downtown Indianapolis, but the Fishers location is the first to feature a full menu. The menu is created by 5280 Bistro, a popular food truck in Fishers. I kicked off my experience by tasting the Bavarian Style Soft Pretzel paired with MashCraft’s own garlic beer cheese, or queso blanco. The pretzel was doughy, buttery, dusted with salt and, because of its size, easily shareable. For my main course, I opted for the fish tacos: two soft corn tortillas filled with grilled and blackened whitefish with a crunchy slaw. A spicy poblano crema is drizzled on top along with a healthy serving of cilantro. Combined

with grilled, seasoned whitefish, the dish has a remarkably fresh taste. Potato chips are served on the side.

In light of the generous portions, MashCraft’s food prices are very reasonable, and 5280 Bistro is one of my favorite food trucks, so the two make a nice partnership.

The items on MashCraft Fishers’ menu are not typically found on the food truck menu, so it allows for some diversity.

Suggested pairings: For the more seasoned beer drinkers, pair the fish tacos with MashCraft’s Last Light Blood Orange IPA, which has a citrus note on the front end that pairs nicely with the fish. The citrus is balanced by the hops. For lighter beer drinks, opt for MashCraft’s Gold American Blonde Ale. It’s not as hoppy and is a refreshing beverage to pair with the meals.

Behind bars: Spicy peach margarita Get it at Pure Eatery, Fishers Ingredients: 2 oz. Hornitos tequila, 1.5 oz. peach puree, 1 oz. sweet and sour, .5 lime juice, three jalapenos Directions: Muddle two jalapenos in a glass. Add other ingredients except for remaining jalapeno into a shaker tin with ice, shake and pour into glass. Garnish with a jalapeno.

Cordoba’s Jewish Quarter includes a synagogue reflecting the turbulent religious history of medieval Spain.

TRAVEL After Muslim invaders from North Africa captured southern Spain from the Christian Visigoths in 711 A.D., they made Cordoba the capital of a new Islamic state. With the encouragement of the rulers, Cordoba became a center of learning and commerce, attracting Jews from all across Christian Europe. By the 10th century, Cordoba, with a population of about 500,000, was the largest city in the world, with running water and lighted streets. In about 1160, a strict Muslim sect conquered Cordoba and threatened its Jews with death if they did not convert to Islam, signaling the beginning of Cordoba’s decline and the end of the socalled “golden age of Judaism.”

In 1236, Christian forces under Ferdinand III of Castile reconquered Cordoba and gave its remaining Jewish residents the right to build a synagogue, which they did. When Cordoba’s bishop complained that the new synagogue rivaled his cathedral in size,

Pope Innocent IV had it demolished. In 1315, residents built a much more modest synagogue near where Moses Maimonides, the great Jewish philosopher, was born in 1135.

The interior of the synagogue was decorated in the Mudéjar style developed under Islamic rule and featured an ornate balcony reserved for women.

After Ferdinand and Isabella expelled all the Jews from Spain in 1492, the synagogue was used as a hospital and later became a chapel used by the local shoemakers’ guild.

In 1884, after inscriptions from the Book of Psalms were found on walls throughout the building, it was restored to close to its original appearance and maintained as a national monument. Today, the Cordoba Synagogue, which retains some evidence of its use as a chapel, is one of Cordoba’s most popular destinations. A statue of a seated Maimonides is nearby.

Let’s just acknowledge that textbooks don’t always get things right. In fact, textbooks were kind of a new thing in the mid1800s when the convenient rhyme “I before E except after C” gained popularity. Too bad this mnemonic device is wildly incorrect.

The full rhyme states, “I before E, except after C — or when sounded like A as in ‘neighbor’ and ‘weigh.’”

But what about those foreign atheists who routinely seize caffeinated heifers? It doesn’t take an Einstein to figure out this rule is just plain weird. I’m not going to leave your education in a heap of rubble; instead, I’m going to make it more complicated and rebuild it (and then remind you there are always exceptions to the rule).

Here’s a new rule for you that will handle most of your spelling conundrums: Use I before E (believe, priest, thief) except when C is followed by L, P, T or V (receipt, conceive,

Unfortunately, even this long rule still has exceptions, like either, forfeit, sovereign and reveille. Still, the rule I outline above works 99 percent of the time.

Gen. Douglas MacArthur famously said, “Rules are mostly made to be broken and are too often for the lazy to hide behind.”

We won’t judge the general too harshly for ending his sentence in a preposition; instead, we’ll just consider how his quote (if true even some of the time) makes English spelling and grammar so tricky.

The only way to know how to spell all these words correctly is to memorize them.

I recommend investing in a nice set of flashcards; you can study them during your leisure time.
