It is our position that shame is to be shared by both the Swiss and our own governments for allowing accused sex offender Roman Polanski to again escape facing responsibility for his crimes while in the United States. The decades-old charge became relevant recently when Polanski faced extradition from his luxury accommodations in the Swiss Alps back to California for his alleged role in a drug-induced sexual tryst with a 13-year-old girl. Since the risk of his facing a court to admit or deny the accusation came up some months ago, the 76-year-old film director has hidden behind a panoply of attorneys, famous Hollywood friends (like Woody Allen) and others. Too old to face the music, say they (he was 43 at the time of the alleged crimes). No one cares any longer, say they. Sadly, the Swiss recently denied extradition and our government capitulated.

While we do not accuse Polanski of guilt (he is known for using courts to pursue libel cases for his own means), we do believe that he must be held to the same law he might be imagined to use as a shield when he is called to be accountable.

The door to trouble

It is our position that leaders must step up enforcement of unauthorized door-to-door solicitations across our fair city. Organizations from our community and others canvas neighborhoods looking for takers of everything from candy to discount cards.

Often, these groups pitch without permits or regard for “no soliciting” signs.

While the City of Noblesville has enforceable regulations regarding door-to-door vendors with specific exclusions for not-for-profit organizations, it is clear that by both the volume and manner in which these solicitations operate that the exemption is being abused. A van dropping off unsupervised teenagers to urge homeowners to dispose of any unwanted cash is not consistent with the intent of the exemption.

We support schools and other organizations in their fundraising efforts, and we want to continue to see them do well. It is our fear that organizations abusing the not-for-profit exemption are harming the efforts of legitimate, local causes that work to earn community support. Contact authorities if wrongdoing is suspected. Allow the Noblesville Police Department to confirm the legitimacy of the operation.

From the backshop Union, bosses need to settle this mess The Noblesville School Board finally — it appears — has heard and read enough. Responding to a recent mailing by the Noblesville Teachers Forum, the board sent a release to media in which it specified its dissatisfaction with what it termed misinformation from the forum. Negotiations between the schools’ administration and the teachers’ union (NTF) broke down last month. In an effort, perhaps, to sway public opinion. Gee, ya think?

The union sent out less than 2,000 notices of its position to community households and stated its case. We view that as another potentially divisive move. Trying to curry favor with residents, in our view, is misplaced. Union and administration leadership should take it all behind closed doors and not come out until a compromise has been reached. Cut every ounce of fat that still exists, agree on terms and move onto the real work. In case anyone forgot, that would be providing our children with the education for which we bargained when we settled here. Anything less is unacceptable.

It’s also probably an equally valuable exercise for the administration and union to fully realize, understand and admit exactly who pays their salaries. Uh, we, the taxpayers,

••• “Soothing” news from The Hill — Sickeningly, we moronic American taxpayers have forked over nearly $1 million per year in settlements to Congressional employees who have been harassed or otherwise treated badly by their political bosses over the past 14 years, according to records from the Office of Compliance. The payouts stem from hundreds of complaints from employees, some of whom may have been sexually harassed or treated so poorly that third-party mediators were brought in to negotiate cash payoffs to settle the cases. Only in America.

We’re all failures and it’s all their fault

By Steve Haas Is there anything more irresistible than a conspiracy theory?

The FBI assassinated JFK who murdered Marilyn Monroe who concealed space aliens who framed OJ … the truth is out there.

Is it the “conspiracy” part that makes these theories so enticing? You have to admit that the prospect of shadowy groups plotting against us is strangely appealing.

First of all, it justifies our insecurities. Our selfesteems are low because we understand the overwhelming odds stacked against us. At least, our inferiority complexes prove that we’re perceptive.

Secondly, belief in such schemes reinforces our self-absorption. If it’s not all about us, then why do powerful organizations attempt to undermine our happiness? Just think of all the time and energy they devote to destroying our hopes and dreams!

Lastly, and most importantly, these conspiracies absolve us from any responsibility for our failures.

It wasn’t our fault that coaches benched us, dates dumped us, schools failed us and companies fired us; it was all part of a sinister plan. So,

don’t blame us for wallowing in strong drink and self-pity.

Or, is it the fact that these conspiracies are “theories” that makes them so seductive?

While most theories are the result of painstaking research and analysis, conspiracy theories don’t require any proof. We’re free to speculate about things we don’t understand, liberated from the constraints of accuracy, rationality and accountability.

Of course, these ideas are incoherent; the CIA designed them that way. Of course, these plots are incomprehensible; the Trilateral Commission uses confusion as a tool. Of course, these claims border on paranoia; as any member of the John Birch Society will tell you, just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you.

So, are dark coalitions orchestrating our demise? I’ll tell you what I think: my theory is that conspiracy theorists are conspiring against us.

By Danielle Wilson A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of working the Current booth at one of the local Fourth of July festivals. To one side was a guy selling some really cool shoes (Zeko’s, check them out) and to the other, surprise surprise, was the Indiana Republican Party.

I’m not sure any of their people knew my political affiliation – after all, Mike Delph happily gave me a patriotic slap bracelet, and a former mayor, a much-needed hand fan­– but I couldn’t help but think that God was playing some funny joke on me. After my article on accidentally voting Republican in the May primary, you see, I received quite a number of not-so-pleasant e-mails.

I can understand religion and education igniting some controversy, but politics? Really? How can the good Republican citizens of Hamilton County even take offense to anything a lonely Democrat says? Especially when the article was clearly intended to be tongue in cheek?

You would not believe how many GOPers actually believe I might be Karl Marx reincarnate. And the things they said about our president! Wow. Don’t even get me started. Listen, our country is the awesome-est because we have two parties; because we can debate and argue and joke with one another in a civilized manner to ensure all sides of an issue are brought forth without fear of being sniped or imprisoned.

I am a Democrat, and I am proud to be one. My father was a Peace Corps volunteer in the 1960s and one of the first public defenders in Louisville. I was raised to fight for the underdog and those without a voice. And I know I am outnumbered by about a hundred to one, but for heaven’s sake, cut me some slack. I married a Republican, didn’t I? I even voted for Mitch Daniels a while

Concealed letters to children help Dad grow up with them Commentary

By Rob Bocko On a business trip to Wisconsin in 2003, I had a lunch meeting with a regular contact, Nancy, at a small town lunch counter. Our conversations over the years almost always gravitated toward our kids at some point and this time was no exception.

But this time in particular stands out in my mind four times a year now. With a thick Brooklyn accent that belied her 13 years in Packerland, Nancy described to me how she would write a letter to each of her boys every year on their birthday.

In these letters she would recount milestones they achieved, special memories, joys, sorrows and her wishes for their lives. Each letter is unique and deeply personal. She kept the letters stashed away only to be given to them after she has passed away.

It struck me as a beautiful way to share with a person how much joy they brought into your

life. Upon my return home I started my first letter. My oldest was already five, so I had a lot of catching up to do.

I recently re-read that first letter for the umpteenth time, and the same wave of emotion still consumes me just as wholly now as it did then.

I try to use these letters not just as isolated moments in time but as a reminder to live so that my children know how much they mean to me on a regular basis. I have done a lot of growing through my children and these letters will chronicle my journey with them.

I have yet to decide if I will wait until I am gone to release the letters – perhaps, just before they go off to college. But they will know they are my great joy and they are loved.

back. On purpose. And just to set the record straight, I did not vote straight-party in the primaries, and have never done so. The reason I didn’t realize I was looking at the wrong ballot was because there were only three races I wanted to vote in, all of which were nonpartisan. Wait. Strike that. I’m not here to explain myself.

I just wanted everyone to take a deep breath and to stop getting your panties in a bunch every time I poke fun. I was attempting to point out my own stupidity and scatterbrain-ness anyway. The world is too serious as is; you don’t need me squawking about the really terrible things and you certainly don’t need to get bent out of shape over something so relatively trivial.

I don’t really have a point to this article except to say that I know I have a fairly great life right now. But I also know that nobody wants to hear about how wonderful my kids, family, job or house are. (We finally have an accepted purchase agreement!) My purpose here is to entertain, espouse, pontificate and maybe enlighten, but certainly not to work people up over sensitive and personal issues I can’t change anyway.

OK, sometimes it is, but in the case of the aforementioned voting article, it was not. So just relax! Nobody is trying to turn our little conservative world communist. I was just ranting about a particularly upsetting experience I had assumed most people would find funny. Much like I found my booth position yesterday. Peace out.

Band with memorable name making memorable music

And now, as he sits and recalls how the Noblesville rock band came up with that name, bassist Jon Kuykendall laughs.

Pool time prompts much more than just fun Commentary

By Leslie Webber When we searched for a new neighborhood several years ago, one of my requirements was a neighborhood pool. It wasn’t that I needed a place to lounge or that I had a plan to raise champion swimmers. We were new to Noblesville, and I knew from living in our last neighborhood that the pool was a place to get to know your neighbors.

I was right. I’ve met the majority of the neighbors I know well at the pool. It’s very easy to strike up a conversation when your child swipes another’s beach ball. You get to know other moms quickly when your carryall is stocked with great snacks.

I often come home from the pool with important information. I would never have had any idea when to register my child for kindergarten had I not talked to another mom poolside. Nor would I have had any idea about Noblesville’s concert in the park series. It probably says something about me that one of my main sources of community news is the neighborhood pool, but

I like getting news from people I know.

Another plus to having a great neighborhood pool is convenience, which leads to frequent visits. Our children have become strong swimmers, thanks in part to lessons with the lifeguards, but peer pressure played a positive role, too. No kid wants to hang out in the baby pool when his friends are swooshing down the slide.

As I write this column, our family is vacationing in South Carolina. For the first time in their young lives, I’ve given our kids a smidge of freedom in the ocean. They’re body surfing, looking for sand dollars and making new friends. All just out of arm’s length.

If it weren’t for the swimming skills they’ve acquired at our neighborhood pool, I would have the kids tethered to me. So, I’m not the only one who is thankful!

O Canada! Will you be everything I hoped for?

By Hannah Davis Long-distance travel’s always a bit of a pain.

And when the family declares you’re spending the night in Niagara Falls, the pain only gets worse. Until someone announces there will be a side trip to Canada.

So, after 11 hours of driving, no fewer than six stops at gas stations for drinks, and circumnavigating a minivan’s seven seats at least once, I crossed into the great unknown. The mystic land of the north — home to fur trappers, wannabe Frenchies and beavers — appeared on the horizon. I whipped out my freshly printed passport and was fast on my way to Canada.

Except when we crossed the border, the most interesting thing we spotted was a speed limit sign in kilometers.

And a couple casinos.

And a Tussaud’s Wax Museum. Yowza.

Much to my dismay, Canada was, save for the field hockey game we stumbled upon at a roadside park and a few amusing accents, disappointingly similar to the nauseatingly tacky

By Pete Semple Current in Noblesville It’s Saturday night on the Courthouse Square. Most of the shops have closed, and many of the store-owners and customers have gone home for the day. Everything seems to be winding down.

old betSy or old bitty?

A gift to Central Indiana Vintage Vehicles, this 1950s sheriff's car was restored and painted to its authentic paint job.

Central Indiana Vintage Vehicles parks its “club car” in front of the courthouse during the Cruise-In. It’s a sheriff’s car from the 1950s, and it looks the part, down to the bullet hole in the rear passenger-side door.

The car originally belonged to David Kingsolver, one of the club’s founding members. After David passed away, his wife Jane donated the car to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s office. When the Sheriff’s office couldn’t use it, they gave it to CIVV, along with enough paint to give it an authentic color.

CIVV members and some others, including Brian Story and Bob and Larry Maxwell, painstakingly restored the vehicle to the pristine condition it’s in today. They even have a name for it.

"When it works we call it ‘Sweet Old Betsy,’” says CIVV board member Larry Grabb. “When it doesn’t, we just call it SOB.”

Pace yourself and eat wisely COMMENTARY

By April Conard Summertime is in full swing and so is the season to barbecue. But when you’re trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle, cookouts can be very dangerous places.

The attitude of the grilling season is carefree and relaxed. However, the carefree part should not derail all the hard work you’ve put into taking care of yourself — summertime also means swimsuits.

Be careful of the pitfalls that come with the backyard barbecue. It is very easy to overeat.

When socializing, we tend to start talking and start shoveling.

There are ways to enjoy yourself and these functions and not suffer the dreaded food hangover. First of all, these parties are usually pitch-in style, so make sure you bring a healthy choice.

Do not starve yourself all day in an attempt to “save” your calories for the party. If you do, you risk eating everything in sight, which slows your metabolism. If you want to splurge a little at dinner, make good choices during the day. Have a plan of action. Give yourself some guidelines before you get to the buffet.

Drink water ahead of time to help fill you up,

so don’t want to stick your head into the whole bowl of potato salad.

Speaking of drinking, adult beverages have many empty calories and, just like food, when you’re in a relaxed setting, you tend to consume more. Pace yourself. This is smart for many reasons, including not being the talk of the neighborhood. If you are actually thirsty, alcohol will not quench your thirst — pour yourself some water instead. (Did you not read my last article?)

Grilling is a great, healthy way to prepare food, so load up on the lean meat and veggies. It is the desserts and sides (a.k.a. chips) that have all the fat and no nutrition.

I’m not suggesting that you avoid fun this summer. Just think before you fill your plate.

If you do suffer from a carb coma the next day, starving yourself will not make up for your choices. Just drink lots of water, load up on the healthy stuff and relax … it’s summertime!

Flavor enhancers aren’t so sweet for your body COMMENTARY

By Carol Rossetti, N.D. What are you doing to your brain, your children’s brains and a developing baby’s brain by eating foods with MSG and aspartame? Debate and research regarding the safety of these flavor enhancers continues to flourish.

What we can agree on is that MSG and aspartame are excitotoxins. Where the debate lies is whether these molecules excite brain cells to death and lead to the development of obesity. I believe that these flavor enhancers are, indeed, toxic.

Research has shown the ill effects of MSG for a long time, but when my daughters were born just 30 years ago, you could find it in their baby foods. And it is still a common ingredient in processed foods on our grocery store shelves.

MSG was developed in 1909 by chemist Dr. Kikunae Ikeda at the University of Tokyo. It was put in Japanese soldiers’ rations, making their meals taste much better than the Americans’. This grabbed the attention of the American military.

During a meeting in 1948 to bring forth this new information, those in attendance included representatives from Pillsbury, Oscar Mayer, Libby’s, Stokely’s, Campbell’s, General Foods and Borden.

Today, you can find MSG in most canned soups, chips, fast food menu items, frozen foods and

canned goods. In ingredient lists, you might find it disguised as hydrolyzed vegetable protein, vegetable protein, natural flavorings or spices. You may also see it spelled out: monosodium glutamate.

Aspartame is in many diet and sugar-free foods, so how does that work positively for someone’s diet when one of the results of ingesting it is developing obesity?

Is it any wonder our children are having problems? An ADHD child is given aspartamecontaining foods and drinks because they have been told to avoid sugar. Or a child with a weight issue is given diet foods, low-fat foods and fat-free foods that are laced with aspartame and/or MSG. Pregnant women are not told of these ingredients’ effects on their unborn children and the effects on the brain and central nervous system.

The bottom line: read your labels and know what you’re putting in your body and your children’s bodies. Xylitol or stevia are two good options for sweetening foods. Both taste great and have no harmful side effects.

By David Cain I’ve lost 20 pounds, and it all started with a small commitment. It all started with a commitment to replace one less-than-healthy meal with a better one. Goodbye to pizza on Friday, hello baked chicken. I made the commitment to an improvement that required one simple change. To create a new habit that was better than an old habit. This small commitment led to another small commitment, then another, and another. In 45 days, I was 20 pounds lighter and making a commitment to new pants.

My daughters both eat their beans. And it all started with one bean. Eat this single bean, and before you know it, it’s two beans, then it’s, “You get candy if you eat four beans” to its final resolution of two certified bean lovers. Green, baked, Lima, if you can say bean with it, they will eat it. All of this bean loving from a commitment to a single bean.

It’s how I ended up married. It all started with a small commitment to a date. It was tennis in the daytime; what could come from that? Fast

forward through several commitments of increasing significance – drinks after tennis, dinner before drinks, getting together without playing tennis – and then I look around to find myself in front of a minister with as many witnesses as we could afford. Small commitments lead to larger commitments, and that proven fact of human nature is available to everyone. At home with the beans or at work with clients, get small commitments and then slowly build on each.

We often make the path to an end goal too complex. If you want a certain conclusion try untangling things by focusing on the immediate next step. And make that immediate next step a small commitment on the path to a larger commitment. They say you can create a new habit in 30 days. Take a small step today on your path to something larger.

By Chris Lloyd There’s a great scene in “The Runaways” that captures the essence of the 1970s girl rock band and the movie about them.

Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart), Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning) and the rest of the recently assembled group are practicing inside a rundown trailer on a steamy California afternoon. Their eccentric producer, Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon), thinks their performance isn’t edgy enough.

So he hires a bunch of local boys to pelt them with dog poo and garbage as they play. Needless to say, the teen girls are soon pretty P.O.’d, and it shows in the anger they put into their music.

The Runaways were a band not of young women who came together to sing about rebellion, but a group assembled by a cynical, brilliant hit-maker who thought jailbait rockers could be the next big thing. Briefly, they were.

The film, based on a memoir by lead singer

Currie, focuses on her character and Jett almost to the exclusion of the other band members.

The most compelling thing about it is the transformation of Currie from 15-year-old wallflower into a snarling sex siren of the stage.

Inevitably, the band becomes a sensation, starts doing progressively harder drugs, begins fighting among themselves, and we can practically start the countdown until their breakup.

There isn’t a lot of soul here, but writer/director Floria Sigismondi keeps things moving along at an upbeat tempo, and the energy of old songs like “Cherry Bomb” still boasts plenty of spark. Despite a boatload of clichés, “The Runaways” rocks on.

Blend basil, garlic, oil and more and presto, it’s pesto!

By Molly Herner Originally from the Liguria region of Genoa, pesto is one of those deliciously versatile Italian sauces that pairs well with any number of pastas, fish and meats.

The Romans ate a sauce that closely resembles pesto, called moretum, made with crushed basil and Parmesan cheese. The sauce was expanded by the French, who added crushed pine nuts and garlic.

Because basil grows indigenously in Northern Italy, the sauce known as “pesto” has become synonymous with Italian cooking.

Pesto is a blended mixture of garlic, olive oil, pine nuts and basil. These four ingredients

combine to make a delicious a quick sauce that requires no pre-cooking.

And remember, the more “virginous” the olive oil, the better flavor it lends to the sauce Pour this sauce over hot pasta or cook it with chicken breasts for dinner. If you like fish, pesto is great with salmon fillet.

Pair this sauce with a light Pinot Grigio or an Italian Vermentino.

pesto sauce Ingredients: • 2 or 3 bundles (about a 1/2 pound) of fresh basil • 6 cloves of garlic • One 2-3-ounce can of pine nuts • Extra virgin olive oil • Finely grated Parmesan cheese Directions: 1. Pluck the leaves from the stems of the basil plants and roughly chop them.

2. Peel and finely chop all garlic cloves.

3. Finely grate about a cup of Parmesan cheese.

4. Put the basil, garlic, pine nuts and Parmesan cheese in a foodIn processor and blend for 30 seconds.

By Tracy Line With daily television reports showing oilsoaked pelicans and tar ball-filled beaches, many travelers have cancelled travel to the Gulf Coast.

But for those who’ve prepaid for their trip and are waiting it out, the question is: how will the oil spill affect their vacations?

According to a recent story in the “Wall Street Journal,” most of the 1,621-mile U.S. gulf coastline from the Texas-Mexico border to the southwestern tip of Florida remains clean.

At press time, this article stated that the impact on the beaches was minimal.

In addition, Brett-Robinson Vacations, a vacation rental company managing a large number of rentals on the Alabama coast, conducted an informal guest survey and discovered that 77 percent of their guests stated that the beaches were not as bad as they’d imagined; 85 percent were still glad they came (see www.brett-robinson.com for details).

If you are among the brave who’re heading south despite the circumstances, try these avenues for accurate, up-to-date information. The Florida DEP (Department of Environmental

Protection) website, www.dep.state.fl.us/deepwaterhorizon, has daily reports on the situation.

Here you’ll find a weather summary, current conditions (open beaches, any health hazards, etc.) and the state’s clean-up action plan.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also offers daily information at www.noaa.gov. A real-time map, Sert Gator, shows exactly where the spill is being reported; visit http://map.floridadisaster.org/gator/ to view.

And, if you’re looking for a deal, guess what?

Gulf Coast hotels and resorts are discounting rooms to make up for those who’ve chosen to migrate to Texas or Hilton Head instead this year. Tourism officials are doing all they can to draw in visitors, including offering up lots of freebies for tourists. If you’re looking for a deal, be sure to do your homework and book last minute. It could be your best vacation yet.

Going pro can shed light on your family history Commentary

By Darla Kinney Scoles Sometimes hiring a professional is a good thing to do. When something goes wrong with anything related to propane gas in our home, my husband is not allowed to even think of uttering, “I can fix that.” We hire a professional.

There are times in the family history quest when hiring a professional genealogist might be the best thing to do as well. The book “Family History for the Clueless” by George D. Durrant and Larene Gaunt lists 12 reasons why a person may want to hire out their research — and there are more than a dozen, I’m sure.

If you read this column weekly, are intrigued by ancestry and have a desire to know more about your own family tree, but have yet to take a first step, you may be the person described in the book’s reason No. 2: “You don’t have time to do research yourself, but you want to find your ancestors.”

Just because you are interested in something doesn’t mean you have the time — or inclination (reason No. 3) — to accomplish it in a reasonable amount of time or without making yourself crazy. If genealogy is not your “thing”

but you want to find out who was the first person in your family to come to the United States, hire a professional.

“You’ve searched everywhere and haven’t been able to find what you want” ranked No. 1 on the book’s list.
