Teen entrepreneur Tony Granitto makes a fashion statement with the skateboarders.

By Pete Semple Current in Noblesville Anyone can dream, but it takes courage and tenacity to take those dreams and turn them into reality. Just ask Tony Granitto, the 17-year-old owner of Votive Clothing. Tony has been a skateboarder for the last 12 years. Last year he decided to involve himself in a different way. “I wanted to start something for skateboarders that was actually built from the ground up … something that grassroots skateboarders could really relate to,” said Granitto. “ I wanted to give them something they could really appreciate.” The idea for Votive clothing was born. However, it wasn’t until Granitto participated in this year's Young Entrepreneur’s Business Plan Competition in May that he gained the tools to bring his idea to life. The competition was sponsored by the Entrepreneurship Advancement Center, an organization devoted to increasing the economic health of communities in Hamilton County and promoting ingenuity by helping people start new businesses. “Originally I thought it was a class,” said Granitto, “and I signed up so I could learn more. I knew I could use the knowledge for my business. The

whole semester we had to build a business plan, and at the end we presented it in a countywide competition.” Now that the competition is over, Granitto has put his plan into action. According to him, the reaction has been good. “The response has been very positive, very enthusiastic,” he said, and then smiling, he added, “The response was greatest from my parents. They’ve supported me the whole way. It’s really not much bigger than just a local response, but it’s growing and it’s only been a year.” Right now, he sells skateboards and shirts, but he plans to offer other products, including hats, pants, accessories, and jewelry. He also has plans to eventually create a new kind of skateboard, though the idea is still in the early stages of development. “I want people to get involved, to really be as enthused about this idea as I am,” he said. “This is a dream I’ve had for a while, and having it unfold when I’m 17 is an awesome experience.” Tony sells his products at Dillon Park and Forest Park on an almost daily basis. For more information, visit Votive Clothing’s Facebook page or call at (317) 645-7873.

OUR VIEWS

It is our position that the Carmel Marathon Championship Weekend, coming June 2011, is a brilliant opportunity for the citizens of Hamilton County. With 45,000 runners, plus tens of thousands family and spectators visiting downtown Indianapolis for the biggest mini-marathon in the country in May, the Carmel Road Racing Group (CRRG) is strategically staging its three-day event five weeks later. From a flat, fast Marathon and Mini Marathon to a 1-mile family fitness walk to a special 8K event offering a national championship level purse, this event is sure to appeal to every category of runner or walker. Carmel’s Monon Center will serve host for the two-day expo prior to race day and the courses have been designed to highlight Hamilton County including the Arts & Design District, Parks and other attractions. With the 60-70 percent of runners and spectators coming from outside of Hamilton County, this event has the potential to have a seven-figure impact on our community in the first year. The CRRG also recently announced this inaugural, nationally recognized running experience as one of two finalists for the USATF 2011 National Championship 8K.

Goes both ways

It is our position that countries who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Recently, the President of Mexico, on a visit to our country, criticized the controversial Arizona law regarding U.S. immigration. That decree requires citizens who are stopped for illegal activity, if deemed necessary, to show documentation of immigration status and fully reflects existing federal law. Rarely have visiting dignitaries spit in the face of a host government’s hospitality. In Mexico, law enforcement officials are allowed to spot check anyone suspected of illegal status to provide documentation. The National Human Rights Commission issued a report summarizing the large numbers of migrants who are routinely kidnapped and held for ransom with the participation of the state. It is common practice to stop and shake down for bribes those entering without proper documentation. Racial profiling and harassment of American migrants is common. The Arizona law has reenergized the debate about immigration. Good. That Americans are clearly divided on the subject does not hand stones to those other nations all-too willing to sling them our way.

From the backshop For the city, well-deserved recognition It didn’t surprise us – OK, maybe just a little – that our city gained additional national notoriety last week when it named by author Bert Sperling as one of the five leading places to retire in the United States . The growth of Noblesville has been something to admire. There is a real vision, there is real commitment and there is a real can-do spirit among businesses of all sizes. Those businesses bring tax dollars, and that dough helps keep residential property taxes more stable. It also helps with city amenities, such as parks and green space. If Mayor John Ditslear can continue to attract businesses to Noblesville – go, Johnny, go, go, go - development and improvements to infrastructure should continue. Housing is affordable, medical care and treatment are top notch, there is a lot to do in one’s free time and, it seems, Noblesville has refused to participate in the recession, as is the case with much of Hamilton County. Sperling, who penned the book, Best Places To Raise Your Family, told popular MSN Money columnist Liz Pulliam Weston that Mt. Vernon , Wash. , Rogers , Ark. , Moon Township , Pa. , and Gainesville, Fla. , complete the top five.

Brian Kelly & Steve Greenberg ••• The administration and union for Noblesville schools still are at a virtual standoff in contract negotiations. There is precious little time left before school resumes, and we believe it is important for an agreement to be reached so school can continue without the bickering as a backdrop. While the teachers’ group has made a number of concessions, and Supt. Libbie Conner says there needs to be more, how about this: charge every kid who participates in any interscholastic or club sport or activity $100 per season. Education is guaranteed. Entry into sports or science programs, for instance, does not have to be. That would bring some relief, at least.

READERS' VIEWS Environmentalists, politicians are to blame Editor, Pertaining to Krista Bocko’s commentary “To ocean waters we have poisoned, I'm sorry” (June 15), it is not humankind›s need – greed – for oil that is destroying our economy, our wild life, and our environment. It is not even the oil companies. All the fault lies with the environmentalists and politicians of both parties, whose actions have gotten us into this mess. If you want to feel guilty about something, feel guilty about electing them and putting up with their idiotic ideas. Barack Obama's claim that deep water drilling is necessary because not enough oil can be found in shallow water and on-shore drilling is a lie. There are large deposits of oil off both

our east and west coasts and the Bakken Formation that alone could produce over 500 billion barrels. If President Clinton hadn’t bowed to Wilderness Society demands and vetoed 1995 legislation, we’d be producing a million barrels a day from ANWR in Alaska right now. Most oil spills have come from leaking tankers and not oil wells or oil pipe lines. The US government forbid constructing a pipe line to transport oil from Alaska causing the Exxon Valdez spill. Drilling on shore and in shallow waters means less spills because of less tankers and better control of well heads above water. Drilling in such places is now forbidden by our government. Noblesville has talent when it comes to writing skills COMMENTARY By Zach Dunkin I marvel each week at the talent displayed by our staff of columnists and experts, most of them from Noblesville. What a treat it is to get my hands and eyes on their musings before the rest of you do. And, now, after seeing the results from other Noblesville residents who entered our Column Contest to fill this space for the next three weeks while I rest my weary fingers, I see the talent pool runs deep for writers in this city. Several of the 21 submissions we received were worthy of Top 3 consideration. But after reading and re-reading the entries, we determined these three winners: • Barbara Stuckwisch, for her confession of a love affair with Noblesville after moving here from Illinois. She edged a couple of other recent move-ins who expressed similar sentiments. • April Morrison, who waxed nostalgic about growing up in the 1980s, when “we had to find creative ways of entertaining ourselves.” Thanks for making a generation of Baby Boomers feel VERY old, April. • Steve Haas, for his explanation of why we are not responsible for our failures. It’s all a conspiracy, according to Steve. I feel better already.

The rest of the lot varied from locals pitching the merits of Noblesville Youth Baseball, the Master Gardener Association, the Cool Quips improv group and Downtown to why we should save money when we are young and why we need guidelines for garage sales to serious matters, such as honoring our vanishing World War II veterans and protecting our rights of religious expression. Suzanne Purewal constructed a clever, sevenstanza poem about boys growing up. You can always reinvent yourself COMMENTARY By Danielle Wilson As some of you may recall, I am cold and dead inside. At least that’s what my husband and I like to say about my relative lack of feelings. I rarely cry in private and NEVER in public, I avoid hugs and outward displays of affection with everyone except my kids, and I get extremely uncomfortable when I am forced to deal with someone in emotional distress. In fact, I usually laugh at awkward moments, even at funerals. My husband Doo is the passionate, spontaneous one in our relationship, and I am the stoic, dependable rock. He’s the classic extravert who gets invigorated from crowds, and I’m the introvert who needs alone time in a dark quiet room to function. Together we make a great team, but lately I’ve wondered if maybe something really is dead inside of me, like my heart perhaps? I’m joking of course, but I have been paying serious attention this last month in an attempt to figure out why I act the way I do and if there is some way I can move closer to being a “normal” female. Not just for Doo’s sake, but for my entire family. Most of them need physical contact as a sign of love, and I am terrible at providing it. It drives Doo crazy, and I know it probably also hurts the other “huggers” I’m close to, like my mom and motherin-law. So here’s what I’ve been working on over the past few weeks. On the advice of counsel and starting only with my husband, I am forcing myself out of my very comfortable comfort zone. I sit right next to Doo on the couch when watching TV, I play footsies with him at the table, I even hug him and rub his back when he gets home from work. I won’t lie, it sucks the life out of

me to make this amount of physical contact, especially at the end of a long day, but it does actually seem to be improving our marriage. All these years of my waiting for my husband to stop acting selfish and earn my affection was a big fat waste of time. It wasn’t him, it was me. All I needed to do was change myself and my actions and, voila! Instant romance. Because now that his emotional needs are being met, he’s been much more attuned to my needs, like laundry and help with the kids and downtime. We finally feel like we are headed in the right direction together instead of just crossing paths occasionally. How long will this last? Who knows, but I have to say it is becoming a bit easier to express affection. I’m not ready to be embracing my neighbors yet, but I don’t feel anxious anymore at the thought of giving my sister-in-law a big fat hug when she’s having a postpartum meltdown at the kitchen sink. I’ll never be as passionate as my husband and will probably always be introverted, but I think I can handle this more outwardly-loving-woman thing for a while longer. It’s kind of cool. So what’s the moral of today’s story, boys and girls? You can always reinvent yourself. If you find something you don’t like, than change it. A new attitude, a new body, even a new way of expressing emotions; if you want to be a better you, then take the steps to make it happen. Even if it’s painful, like when someone gives me an impromptu hug (yuck), change can be good. Peace out. Danielle Wilson is a Carmel resident and contributing columnist. Breastfeeding ‘creepy? No, but ignorant comment from woman is Commentary By Krista Bocko A couple weeks ago I tuned in to NPR (90.1 FM) and stumbled upon the BBC program “World, Have Your Say.” What drew me in this day, besides the accents and the turns of phrases that I find so lovely, was the topic. Kathryn Blundell, the deputy editor of a UK parenting magazine, had referred to breastfeeding as being “creepy,” and listeners were weighing in. Oh, great, I sighed. Here’s another woman not only dismissing, but demoralizing another woman’s choice to breastfeed. Demoting breastfeeding, which is a natural and beautiful way to nurture a baby, as “wrong” and “gross” and “creepy” is—to use some UK slang—absolute bollocks. Is this why many women debate whether or not to even try breastfeeding? Is this why women are made to feel ashamed when nursing in public, or maybe even in private too, even though they aren’t doing anything wrong? And to get these comments from other women is really baffling. I wouldn’t be able to understand it

from men, either, but hearing and reading that some women have bought into the lies of the culture that breasts are only for pleasure and have no practical purpose whatsoever is sad. There’s a taboo against breastfeeding, it seems to me, and I find it mind-boggling that anyone would take issue with a mother feeding her child the way nature intended. I also wonder why other people care about me or any other woman who has nursed her children. Really? Aren’t there real problems in the world to address and spend energy on? What I’d like to see is a culture where breastfeeding mothers are embraced and not undermined, where they can nurse anywhere and everywhere without fear or embarrassment, and where ignorant comments such as these are never even thought, much less spoken. Krista Bocko, her husband and four children live in “Old Town.” Noblesville in a historic home. She can be reached at www.cachetwrites.blogspot.com

The Friends Church, 1055 Division Street across from Seminary Park, is still standing and used by the Friends’ congregation Dedicated in October of 1892, the building and the Romanesque Revival style that was more commonly found on public buildings like churches and government buildings than on private homes. Two additions have been made to the church, and in the 1920s, a bungalow-style parsonage was added next door. A Top 5 place to retire in U.S.? You’re living in it Commentary By Leslie Webber When I think about our retirement, which is more than a few years away, I picture us near a body of water. I’ll take a lake or an ocean. Then again, I don’t enjoy sweltering temperatures, and I don’t want to be on the lookout for alligators every time I sink a putt. I also realize my 401k took a significant hit the day I left the corporate world to bake cookies and bandage scraped knees. While we won’t be grandparents for many, many years, I suspect I’ll want to be within an afternoon’s drive of our children. Maybe I should start envisioning our retirement a little differently. Liz Pulliam Weston, a regarded personal finance writer, wrote a recent column for “MSN Money” which listed the five top places in the United States to retire, based on affordable housing, a good economy, good access to medical care, and a wide variety of leisure activities. (To be honest, the headline for the story was “5 Cheap Places to Retire in the U.S.,” but the word cheap sounds so, well, cheap). Regardless of the terminology, it turns out we don’t have to look very far for one of those places. Weston asked Bert Sperling of “Best

Places” for his top five choices for the most affordable places to retire, Noblesville was selected. A capsule look at Noblesville’s desirability accompanying the story indicated our city has a median income of $68,960, a median home price of $140,800, unemployment rate of 8.1 percent, cost of living index of 92 (100 is the national average) and a cost of healthcare index of 99 (100 is national average). “We have always thought of Noblesville as a whole life community where a person can grow up and go to school, work, raise a family, and retire,” said Mayor John Ditslear in a press release from his office. “It’s very gratifying to now receive recognition for what our community offers seniors,” he added. While I may prefer sand to snow and oyster po’boys to tenderloins, the idea of connecting to a community long-term is really appealing. There’s something to be said for a shared history and deep roots. Leslie Webber is a Noblesville resident, wife, mother of two very young children and a professional photographer. Noblesville’s Corrao receives first Distinguished Hoosier award By Zach Dunkin Current in Noblesville The recognition just keeps rolling in for Michelle Corrao. Less than two months after the Noblesville mother of two was honored in Corrao Washington by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder with the Special Courage award for her outstanding work on behalf of crime victims, Corrao was named the first recipient of the Distinguished Hoosier award for her selfless advocacy and empowerment of victims of crime. Attorney General Greg Zoeller and Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) Executive Director T. Neil Moore recently presented Corrao the award in a ceremony at the State House in Indianapolis. Corrao is the first winner of the award which recognizes extraordinary bravery in the aftermath of a crime or a courageous act on behalf of a victim or potential victim. “This is really over the top for me,” Carrao said last week from her office. “I’ve never had anything happen to me like this. Only bad things. “I’m not used to this kind of attention. The biggest thing is that this is getting awareness out there.”

Thirteen years ago, Corrao was abducted from outside her home in Fort Wayne. Three men sexually assaulted and held her captive in the trunk of her own car. She survived due to an observant off-duty police detective, Art Billingsley. Since that horrifying experience Corrao has dedicated her career to working with law enforcement, medical personnel, clergy, criminal justice students, prosecutors, and government officials to help them understand the impact they have on victims. She is community relations director for Noblesville-based Prevail, Inc., an organization that serves victims of crime and abuse. Carrao was unaware that Moore, who was Chief of Police in Fort Wayne when detective Billingsley discovered her body, had been nominated her for the award. “I thought it had something to do with the award I got in Washington,” said Carrao. “They didn’t give me any details; just what time to be there. I guess I’m still in denial.” Zoeller said Carrao exemplified “the important role advocates play in assisting victims throughout the entire criminal justice process, the advocates we want to support by this recognition.” “Her story is one of hope and inspiration,” added Moore.

Marathon on Morse ‘The place’ for long-distance swimmers welcomes some of nation’s best

Photos by Mary Milz

Better known for its boating and fishing, Morse Reservoir is becoming a hot spot for long-distance swimmers. “Over the years people see us and ask what are you doing,” says swimmer Jim Barber.

By Mary Milz Current in Noblesville Everyone knows Morse Reservoir is recognized for great boating, fishing and summer recreation. But few realize it is also developing a reputation for long-distance swimming, No, not to the nearest buoy and back. But up and down the South Harbor channel and back. Six miles. And that’s the short course. In fact, some of the nation’s best marathon swimmers will test the waters July 17 when Morse hosts the 2010 10K U.S. Masters Swimming National Championships. Race director Dick Sidner says 170 swimmers from 22 states and Canada had signed up to compete by press time. It comes in the wake of the inaugural event, a 25K national championship at Morse in 2008. Sidner says that first race went swimmingly well, helping establish the reservoir as a “safe and pleasant venue” for open water events. “One of the nice things about this venue is all the flat water,” Sidner says. “It’s not Lake Michigan where it can be wavy and ice cold, and it’s not the ocean where you’re dealing with riptides, currents and things like that.” Plus, the South Harbor channel, where the swim takes place is all idle zone. Swimmers aren’t dodging speed boats. Nationally-known marathon swimmer Jim Barber, 50, Zionsville, calls Morse his training ground of choice. “The nice thing about Morse is I can set a course to go in one direction and go for miles,” he says. “And it’s really safe; that’s probably the most important thing. Barber who has swum the 23-mile English Channel and won the 28.5-mile Manhattan Island race is preparing to swim 20 ½ miles

Dick Sidner, who owns a home on the west side of Morse, says the reservoir’s flat water makes it ideal for training and competition for long-distance swimmers.

from Catalina to Los Angeles in August. When he finishes, he’ll join roughly three dozen others who’ve achieved the “triple crown” for distance swimming. He says he’s amazed at how distance swimming “has taken on a shape of its own at Morse” becoming “the place” for endurance swimmers. Barber notes the swimmers have become “somewhat of a spectacle. Over the years people see us and ask what are you doing? A lot of people appreciate it.” Community leaders appreciate the ripple effect. The Hamilton County Sports Authority awarded Sidner a $1,500 grant to help put on the 10K swim. Karen Radcliff, deputy director of the Ham-

ilton County Convention and Visitors Bureau says, “you don’t get to see an open water marathon swim every day. It brings in athletes from all over, and it helps cement the fact that this is an area for athletic events.” Though you won’t find him in the water race morning, Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear will fire the starting gun. “Anytime you can promote Noblesville in a positive way it helps,” Ditslear says “It brings people to town who spend money to the benefit of our hotels and restaurants, and it gets our name out. Maybe one of those swimmers has a business and is looking to move.” Sidner, 61, gets much of the credit. A lifelong swimmer, he moved to the Morse area in

1986, but his condo didn‘t provide easy access to the water. As Sidner entered more triathlons, he began looking for “a house with a dock where you could just jump in.” He bought a lakeside house on the west side inviting fellow members of the Noblesville Adult Swim Team, Inc. (NASTI) to join him for regular swims. Word spread. On any given weekend, you may find more than two dozen people taking the plunge from Sidner’s dock. “They can come any time, day or night,” Sidner says. “I tell them just respect the property and swim safely. Wear florescent caps.” And the swimming isn’t limited to summer, by the way. Sidner says, “The ice didn’t thaw until March 9th and I had people swimming March 15 without wetsuits. They were training for a cold-water swim.” The swimmers competing next weekend are guaranteed a much warmer welcome.

Clean up your act (body) and chase away allergies COMMENTARY By Carol Rossetti, N.D. Are allergies the bane of your existence? Do you suffer each and every day with a barrage of annoying symptoms? Itchy nose and throat, runny nose, coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes? Help is on the way. Allergies are a symptom of toxicity. We live in a highly toxic world from the things we breathe, the foods we eat, the things we touch, the products we use to clean our home and our body, the drugs we take, the water we bathe in and the list is enormous. Do you know that cleaning up your gut will dramatically improve your allergies? Follow this process of cleaning up your body with: Food: Stop eating processed foods or significantly reduce them. Buy as many organic foods as possible along with natural and organic meats. Remove wheat and dairy from your diet immediately. Wheat is highly inflammatory and dairy contains toxins that make allergies worse. Body:C You be having two to three O U Pshould ON FR EE bowel movements each day. I usually suggest a

product called Tiao-He. It is a 15-day cleanse and removes the thick layer of gunk that accumulates on the lining of your intestines. No fasting, no special foods required, just lots of water to flush the system. Home: Use products that do not contain harmful chemicals such as Sunshine Concentrate. You can use if for all cleaning, washing, and mixed with essential oils such as lemon or lavender, it will act as an antibiotic soap. Help with symptoms can include products such as HistaBlock, ALJ, Fenugreek and Thyme. ALJ is available in liquid form for children. Children will improve immediately when you follow some of these principles. Now that you know the cause and the solution take control of your health and act responsibly. Calcium supplements: Plant or rock? COMMENTARY By Laura Marenco Many of us take a calcium supplement to make sure our diet is sufficient or to prevent osteoporosis later in life. But are all calcium supplements really the same, and is calcium just calcium? It is not widely known, but most calcium supplements on the market are made from milling limestone or marble and selling it as calcium carbonate, essentially chalk in tablet form. Other manufacturers take it another step and formulate the calcium mineral into calcium citrate, with the idea it is more absorbable. Contrary to popular belief, both calcium carbonate and calcium citrate have nearly the same absorption, about 30 percent, if taken with meals So, does it make sense, then, to buy the cheapest calcium supplement you can find? Well, there appears to be more to this now. In recent years, another supplement has appeared: calcium derived from algae. This new form is purported have greater bio-availability over other supplements that focus on only absorption of the mineral into our bodily fluids. The plant source provides predigested calcium that is bound in a natural food form by proteins so that the calcium will be more bio-available for synthesis.

10 | July 13, 2010

Very recently, calcium supplements were studied by researchers from the Harvard Medical School and University of Connecticut, and the results are published in the July 2010 issue of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. In this study, the scientists compared the effects of algae calcium with calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. The researchers studied the effects of calcium absorbed from these supplements on human osteoblast cells, the cells responsible for bone formation. Their studies showed that algae calcium increased DNA synthesis, a measure of the ability to form new bone-building cells, by 300 percent over calcium carbonate and 400 percent more effective than calcium citrate. Algaederived calcium was significantly more effective than either of the two most popular calcium salt supplements, and, interestingly enough, calcium citrate performed the worst. So when it comes to getting the best calcium supplement for your health, the primary question now may be, is it from rock or plant life? MONEY MATTERS Have you ever bought your own fireworks? Why or why not?

COMMENTARY By David Cain Everyone has heard the phrase “live in the moment,” but have you ever really thought about it? Actually, there is a lot more truth to the phrase than you might expect. We actually live in the past, calling on our memories for most of our decisions. Almost everything we do as humans is based on our memory. We scan it for the familiar and we use our past to make decisions about our future. And most of this happens on a subconscious level. Is it any surprise that we repeat our behavior? Is it any surprise that our past actions are the best predictor of our future actions? Feel like you always end up in the same type of relationship? Feel like you married your dad or mom? Feel like you make the same decisions again and again? We look for the familiar in our archived memory and make decisions that are comfortable. Experience is what happened in the last five seconds. After that, we tuck the experience away in our brain and it becomes a memory. We store our whole life as a catalog of problems, issues, outcomes and observations in our mental library. And what do you suppose are the most common memories that we call up from the past?

Emotionally charged experiences are the easiest for us to remember. Do you remember where you were Sept.11, 2001? How about what you did on September 12 and 13? Do you remember your first car? How about your fourth car? When there are emotions tied to the experience, they are remembered more vividly. And that applies to any type of emotion. If there is emotion, there is a greater chance of being remembered. When you talk to anyone from customers and coworkers to your spouse and children, you can create emotion and more easily stand out. That emotion can be as simple as telling a story to make your point or showing an example that has meaning to them. That emotion can also be simply getting excited about what you do and what you are saying. It’s surprising how captivating and memorable it can be to listen to someone that is genuinely passionate. Just remember, excitement is contagious and emotion is memorable. David Cain works at MediaSauce, a digital media and online marketing company in Carmel. Ben Stiller (left) and Jennifer Jason Leigh (right) star in writer/director Noah Baumbach’s “Greenberg.”

COMMENTARY By Chris Lloyd Greenberg wants desperately to be a 1970s Robert Altman film, but it fails. Altman, for all his stylistic flourishes with naturalistic, overlapping dialogue and ensemble casts, always relied on a narrative through line to bind things together. He didn›t just like to observe characters for their own sake; he wanted them to do things. Roger Greenberg, the protagonist of this black comedy/drama from writer/director Noah Baumbach (“The Squid and the Whale”), doesn’t do much of anything. After being released from a mental hospital and moving to Los Angeles to stay at his brother’s home while they’re away, he hooks up with an old girlfriend. “Right now I’m trying to do nothing for awhile,” he says. “That’s brave at our age,” says the ex, played by Jennifer Jason Leigh (who also co-wrote the story). Roger is self-hating and occasionally abusive

to those around him, like his brother’s assistant Florence (a vibrant Greta Gerwig) and his old pal Ivan (Rhys Ifans). Roger was in a band with Ivan 15 years earlier, but walked away from a record contract. He didn’t want to compromise his integrity, but didn’t grasp it would end the dream for all of them. Roger hangs around the house, drinks a lot, looks after the family dog when it takes sick (though clearly annoyed at having to do so) and begins a fumbling, hot-and-cold romance with Florence. He’s an unlikable guy, but Ben Stiller plays him with an emotional center that carries us through the film’s meandering course. Grade: B-minus

Just when you think you’ve seen every twist on the barbeque restaurant, along comes Big Hoffa’s. The restaurant itself is fairly ordinary, but the care and craft put into each item on the menu is way above the call of duty. Adam Hoffman, “Big Hoffa” himself, started the restaurant after moving to Indiana from Southern California in 2003. He brought with him his passion for barbeque cooking and unsurpassed know-how. Adam makes his own barbeque sauce, and smokes some of his meats for as long as 30 hours before serving them. He also makes his own beef jerky from 100 per cent filet mignon, slowly smoking it in small batches for hours before quickly fire-smoking it to bring out the flavor. Big Hoffa’s offers delicious, inexpensive food and a comfortable, laid-back atmosphere. 800 E. Main St., Westfield | Phone: (317) 867-0077 Hours: 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and noon-8 p.m. Sunday.

Grilled Steaks Balsamico These delicious steaks won top honors at the National Beef Cook-Off. We served the cheese sauce in hollowed-out lemon halves. Ingredients • 2/3 cup balsamic vinaigrette • 1/4 cup fig preserves • 4 (6- to 8-ounce) boneless beef chuck-eye steaks • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper • 1 (6.5-ounce) container buttery garlic-and-herb spreadable cheese

Directions: Add Godiva Original Liqueur and Cîroc Vodka in martini glass and stir.

Directions 1. Process vinaigrette and preserves in a blender until smooth. Place steaks and vinaigrette mixture in a shallow dish or a large zip-top plastic freezer bag. Cover or seal, and chill at least 2 hours. Remove steaks from marinade, discarding marinade. 2. Grill, covered with grill lid, over mediumhigh heat (350° to 400°) 5 to 7 minutes on each side or until desired degree of doneness. Remove to a serving platter, and sprinkle evenly with salt and pepper; keep warm.

A war hero and scoundrel; be careful what you look for Commentary By Darla Kinney Scoles The best part of family history study is by far the stories that emerge from the search. Still in the July 4th frame of mind, I thought I’d offer one great tale from my maternal line shared by my Great-Uncle Bill when asked for his favorite genealogical finding. Writes Bill: “Our family descended from a Colonel John Penrose of Revolutionary War fame. He was a member of the socially and financially prominent Penrose family of Philadelphia and lent 1,000 pounds to the committee organizing the Colonial effort to break free from the British. It was the second largest loan to the effort. He was active with George Washington during the defense of New York and other battles during the war. His name appears in Washington’s Journal. “The Colonel, however, was also a bit of a rounder, loud, and impatient with most delays in the revolution. “In the book History of the Penrose Family of Philadelphia, published in 1903, his information includes the notation ‘died without issue’ - and yet our family descended from that gentleman!

“This was a mystery that puzzled me greatly until I came across some birth entries from the local Lutheran church in Philadelphia. (In those days births were recorded in churches.) Though the Penrose family members were long time communicants in the local Episcopal Church, lo and behold, there were three entries about the colonel with three different women (no marriages) listing three births - two girls and one boy named Joseph. “I understood then that the Colonel had probably been disowned and the children were not accepted as members of the Penrose family. Later, scanning through the directories of the city I kept tracing the name Joseph and located one of his children, who is one of my ancestors. Mystery solved. “Now you can see just how engrossing the study of genealogy can be!” Darla Kinney Scoles is a freelance journalist living in Noblesville. One good turn … creates another problem Commentary By Brenda Alexander Every day, I’m faced with decisions that I’m ill-prepared to make. It isn’t the choice between good and evil that confounds me; it’s the choice between good and better. In particular, how do I decide which advice to follow when making decisions that affect the environment and my health? Do I focus more on saving water or more on preventing the spread of disease? Does home safety trump energy conservation? You see, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) advise you to wash your hands by rubbing them under water for 20 seconds – long enough to sing the birthday song twice. Only then can you turn off the water using the paper towel. I think the EPA would call that a violation of water conservation. Crime prevention tips urge you to trim your shrubs in order to prevent burglars from having a place to lurk. But the EPA suggests landscaping – large trees and shrubs close to the home - can reduce energy consumption.

Crime prevention says to use outdoor lights at night; the EPA says turn them off! If I recycle a tuna can, I must first rinse it with water. If my child rides his bike to school, he could become a victim. If I switch to an Energy Star appliance, my old one goes in a landfill. If I reuse a juice bottle for water, it can become a Petri dish for germs. Do I choose to prevent pet treasures entering the sewer system or do I add plastic to the landfill? I think the EPA, Department of Energy, CDC, and possibly FBI need to get together and create a flow chart to help me steer through the process of determining what is more important – energy conservation or safety; water conservation or health; reducing landfills or energy efficiency. Brenda Alexander is a freelance writer and resident of Noblesville. You can contact her at AlexanderInk@ comcast.net.

Get the most mileage out of your drive time COMMENTARY By Michelle Grossman To Frequently Filling the Tank, who wrote: “I really love summer and the break from the school routine, but I feel like all I’m doing is driving my kids back and forth to practices and playdates!” Assuming that all of these activities you’re driving them to and from are life-enhancing and non-negotiable, I’m going to recommend some things to make the car rides themselves a better experience for you. Step 1: Turn off your cell phone. Step 2: Make your child turn of his cell phone and unplug his iPod. Step 3: Talk to each other. This is a good time to touch base, to find out how they’re doing and what they’ve done during the day. Share what you’ve been up to and your plans for the day. All of these little conversations go a long way to keeping the lines of communication open between parent and child. It’s also a good time to get better acquainted with any friends you’re giving rides to as well.

No cell phones or iPods? Are we Amish? I’m not telling you to disconnect from your social network indefinitely. Try it for a few minutes at a time while just driving around in town. And you’ll both learn to like it. Promise. If you get resistance about the no phone or iPod thing, work out a compromise --maybe 15 minutes off, 5 minutes on. Or start smaller and work your way up to longer periods of time. Eventually nobody will be keeping track. We enforce this rule on long road trips during family vacations. Some of the best conversations happen once everyone’s stopped bickering and settled in for the ride. What are some ways your family stays entertained on long car trips? Share your ideas. Multi-church effort hits issues closer to home

Commentary By Janna Lynas The tragedies of hurricanes, earthquakes and other natural disasters are reported and pumped into our lives in the immediate days and weeks that follow. We hear and see what the media reports, and we give what we can to help. But just as quickly, time goes by, and soon we have to go looking for information about relief efforts, events and people all but forgotten. These are the stories that we hear about. What about the ones that go unnoticed or unheard, happening every day all around us? A multi-church effort called Faith, Hope and Love seeks to focus our attention on the needs in our community, the people we call neighbors, and give of our time during a week long mission to help each other. In its third year in Noblesville, Faith , Hope and Love promotes unity of community to come to the aid of those within. Just as Jesus came to serve, so we as Christians seek to be a

blessing to our neighbors, doing what we can to help and love each other. Community businesses and organizations partner with churches to be the hands and feet of Jesus, satisfying a physical need while loving and praying for the people we serve. Projects are varied and scattered all over Noblesville. From neighborhood clean-up, to building a picnic shelter, general maintenance of a local school and packing food bags for disaster relief in Haiti, there truly is something for everyone. If you and your family are interested in having an impact on your community, serving alongside your neighbors of Noblesville, go to www.wrcc.org for registration and detailed information or follow on Facebook to find out how you can get involved. Janna Lynas is a stay-at-home mom living in Noblesville with her minister husband Derek and three children. You may contact her at faith@currentnoblesville.com.

Student trip to Spain: cathedrals, culture and some naked bikers By Stephanie Simpson For Current in Noblesville Once was not enough for me. I had been waiting to return to Spain ever since I got home from the Noblesville High School trip in 2008 with a handful of students, a couple of chaperones and our two Spanish teachers, Kevin Cole and Marc Slain. As a freshman at Indiana University, I was still able to take the NHS trip again along with a couple of other IU classmates, more NHS students, and, of course, the always-entertaining, energetic and educational Mr. Cole and Mr. Slain. Instead of touring Northern Spain as we had done in 2008, this time we were touring Southern Spain to visit such cities as Madrid, Sevilla, Cordoba and Toledo, where, with the same leadership from of our excellent Educational First (EF) Tours guide, Marcello, we saw cathedrals, museums and lots of excited soccer fans. Being in such a great country to practice Spanish and to learn their customs and history is what Photo provided by Kevin Cole truly made the trip magical. Several Noblesville High School students and three Indiana University freshman toured Southern Spain this summer under the supervision of NHS Spanish teachers Kevin Cole and Marc Swain. There’s so much to the history and culture of Spain that many of us don’t know about. Plus, going to the hisby the way, is a huge year for Spain. torical places and living their culture is so different than reading Walking around the ancient city of Toledo was magnificent, about it in a book. What’s interesting is that something that was and seeing Toledo’s cathedral was eye-opening. Spaniards was also an experience. I could see how much Europeans love soccer, a passion that is to be admired. I also loved touring Sevilla because it is so popular in Hollywood. There, the Plaza of Spain was used in “Star Wars Episode II” as the outside bridges and walkways of Naboo. The inside of the royal palace Alcazar was used for the royal palace in Orlando Bloom’s “Kingdom of Heaven.” And in the new blockbuster movie “Knight and Day,” Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise have an intense motorcycle chase scene throughout the streets of Seville. I’ll admit, as we spent our last 24 hours of the trip either on a plane or in an airport trying to get back home, I began to wonder if I really liked Spain all that much. However, now that I’m home, re-reading the diary I kept, shuffling through old museum tickets, and browsing through pictures, that the Spain trip was truly a once in a lifetime event. If you’re a Noblesville High School student you might just be able to experience this trip in two years. Trust me, it’s worth the wait.

Stephanie Simpson is a 2009 graduate of Noblesville High School and a sophomore business major at Indiana University.

DISPATCHES » Three new breeds recognized – Three exotic strains of pooches - the Icelandic sheepdog, the Cane Corso and the Leonberger – are now recognized by the American Kennel Club, allowing them to strut their stuff at AKC-sanctioned Cane Corso breed competitions in the U.S., including next February’s Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. -www.msnbc.com » Dogs dumbed down? – Dogs are now so dependent upon people that they fail certain basic intelligence tests that wolves and wild dogs ace, according to new research. The findings provide evidence that humans, through domestication of canines, have caused dogs to lose their non-social problem-solving skills. The loss in skills appears to be "hardwired" genetically into dogs, helping to explain why homeless dogs struggle to survive. -www.msnbc.com

Following the trends in kitchen countertops Question: We would like to upgrade our existing kitchen laminate countertops. What are the pros and cons of the most popular options, and what trends are you seeing in our market? COMMENTARY By Larry Greene Answer: As kitchens have become the “hub” of the home, it’s more important than ever that the countertops be durable but also look good visually. One of the biggest trends in today’s kitchens is the use of multiple countertop materials in the same kitchen. The island may have a different material than the perimeter. Consider the following options: Acrylic solid surface: Solid-surface materials made from manufacturers like Corian, Staron and HiMacs are very durable and cost less than granite or quartz. Solid surface tops allow for built-in integral sinks and suppliers have recently introduced new updated colors with translucent particles that look more like real stone. Granite: Although the maintenance concern with granite is often exaggerated, it is true that

20 | July 13, 2010

granite is porous and does need a sealer to be applied periodically. The appeal of granite is the look of natural stone and the fact that each slab is somewhat different. Upgrading to more detailed edges with granite is expensive, as it must be done by hand labor. Quartz: Quartz is rapidly gaining ground

on other options. This material is typically 93 percent natural quartz and is scratch resistant. It is non-porous, so it does not need sealing and is stain resistant. A big difference between quartz and granite is the color consistency you get with quartz due to the fact that it’s man-made. Quartz is similar in cost to granite but is usually

Current in Noblesville

about 10 percent more than standard granite colors. Other materials for countertops: Other choices to add interest in the kitchen include countertops made from hardwood like mahogany, recycled glass, concrete and hammered copper. These options can be used for an accent on the island or for the entire kitchen area. Larry Greene is owner of Case Handyman & Remodeling. For extended flowering 19th Annual give your plants a trim Noblesville Street Dance Commentary By Holly Funk With a good deal of the summer behind us now, a lot of flowers are looking a bit gangly. With the heat and the rain, they’ve been working overtime…and the sad part is, it’s soon to be August, infamously hotter and muggier, and finding a fresh flat of annuals is simply out of the question. Besides that, we can’t just give up on them. And what about the perennials? They look exhausted, too. We can’t just replace them when they begin to slack. We’ve got to revive these poor things with a little trimming. Don’t we all feel better with a fresh haircut? All plants respond to trimming in the same way; they put out new growth. If we give them a little trimming now and wait a few weeks, we can celebrate the fall months with lush, lively flowers. Take petunias, for example. Many of them are looking leggy right now. But since they bloom prolifically and even tolerate some pretty cool temperatures, it’s wise to keep them going. They will last far longer into the cooler fall months than most annuals. So, just snip your petunias back to about 8 inches, being careful to make

cuts just above a leaf, leaving no stubs, so the plant will have a place from which to regenerate. Plants that are deadheaded regularly will flower longer because when you prevent a plant from forming seed you redirect the plant’s energy back into making more flowers, instead of exhausting itself to produce seed. Many plants will give you a second flush of blooms when sheared, like a haircut. For example, when sheared, Coreopsis “Moonbeam’ will produce a new flush of blooms before Jack Frost wipes them out. Left un-sheared you get nothin’. Garden plants that don flowers on a single stem should have the whole stem cut back to the base of the plant when finished flowering… like daylilies or hostas. After trimming, I sometimes give them a shot of fertilizer for a boost, and then I just forget about it. Within a few weeks, the plants look just as they did in May. Seriously!
