Council hears ordinance to set money aside for Pleasant Street Compiled by Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com The Noblesville Common Council assembled May 28 for a regular meeting. Councilors Mark Boice, Greg O’Connor and Rick Taylor were absent. What happened: The council approved an ordinance to amend a past ordinance regarding the city’s pledge of local income tax revenues to the City of Noblesville Redevelopment Commission for the payment of lease rentals.

Yelton said because the park impact fees are being updated, the council also must approve an update to the city’s recreation zone improvement plan so it matches.

What happened: The council introduced an ordinance concerning the adoption of a recreation zone improvement plan from 2019-2028 and approved the amending of an ordinance regarding park impact fees. structure, the need for which would be caused by that new development,” Howard said. “So, the fee must reflect the approximate cost of the infrastructure necessary to keep the city’s level of service. This ordinance is substantially similar to the ordinances that we’ve had in place in the past. Obviously, the numbers have gone up due to inflation.”

The council approved the amendment to the park impact fee ordinance that updated the rate for a two-family dwelling unit and will vote on the ordinance to update the recreation zone improvement plan at its next meeting.

What happened: The council introduced, and set a public hearing, for an ordinance that would appropriate $1.25 million from the city’s motor vehicle highway fund for potential right-of-way acquisition costs for the expansion and extension of Pleasant Street.

What it means: “Essentially, we are in the throes of looking at future improvement on Pleasant Street,” City Controller Jeff Spalding said. “That process often requires the purchase of some land in that corridor as right-of-way. There is a process the council has to go through for that, but at the recommendation of the finance committee, and with the support of the mayor, the thought was to at least have funds appropriated and available as those properties get identified for council consideration. We worked with the engineer-

ing department to at least get a sense of scope – based on the planned work that would be upcoming in the relatively near future – on what the cost of property acquisition might be in 2019 to come up with this $1.25 million we’re appropriating now. So, that’s the purpose of this ordinance, is to just have those funds appropriated for the remainder of 2019 for potential right-of-way acquisition.”

The council unanimously approved a motion to hold a public hearing at its June 11 meeting.

Sobek appointed to school board news@currentnoblesville.com The Noblesville Schools Board of Trustees appointed Lisa Sobek June 4 to fill a vacancy created by the EDUCATION recent resignation of Teri Ditslear.

The board publicly interviewed four finalists before selecting Sobek.

Sobek brings a corporate background in marketing, sales and account management to Sobek the role as well as experience as executive chair of the Noblesville Diversity Coalition, founded in 2017.

The organization brings together leaders representing the school district, city, business community, faith organizations and parents to advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion in the Noblesville community.

“I am a passionate supporter of Noblesville Schools, both as a parent and as a community leader and care deeply about providing a meaningful, positive and equitable educational experience for all children in Noblesville,” Sobek said.

“I’m thrilled and honored to have been appointed as the newest member of the Noblesville School Board of Trustees and look forward to continuing to serve and advocate for our students, parents, teachers and staff.”

Sobek has been involved in volunteer and leadership roles with Good Samaritan Network, Grace Church and Wheeler Mission and served in Noblesville Schools’ classrooms and parent-teacher organizations.

A graduate of Indiana University’s Kelly School of Business and Indiana Wesleyan University, Sobek is an alumna of the Noblesville Schools Miller Ambassadors program, where she learned how the district operates in areas including curriculum, finance and student services.

Sobek was sworn in at the June 4 school board special session and will serve out the remainder of Ditslear’s four-year term, which ends Dec. 31, 2022.

Sobek and her husband have two children who attend Noblesville Schools.

White River Vision Plan unveiled

By Lisa Gauthier Mitchison news@currentnoblesville.com After more than a year of collaboration, officials from Hamilton and Marion counties unveiled the White ENVIRONMENT River Vision Plan at a June 3 press conference in Indianapolis.

“It’s not every day that Indianapolis partners with Hamilton County, but it’s been an absolute pleasure,” said Emily Mack, director of the Indianapolis Dept. of Metropolitan Development. “It’s been a wonderful collaboration.”

The plan divides 58 miles of the White River into zones intended to reflect the character of the surrounding community and identifies seven anchor areas for exploration. Proposals within the anchor areas include a new trail from Noblesville’s Potter’s Bridge Park to Cicero; a viewing tower at Strawtown Koteewi Park; enhanced river access in downtown Noblesville; improved pedestrian crossings at Allisonville Stretch near Conner Prairie; and outdoor adventure activities at Oliver’s Crossing near I-465.

“Partners of the White River has three goals: Improving water quality, increasing public access and fostering a better appreciation of the value of the White River, all

of which are embedded in the White River Plan,” said Gene D’Adamo, CEO and president of the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, which provided grant money to Partners of the White River.

Hamilton County Tourism President/CEO Brenda Myers said it’s time to put the many months of planning into action.

“When we embarked 13 months ago, we had three phases to this endeavor: discover, envision and action. And I think I would rename action to activate because now we are at the point where we need to think about activating all this planning,” Myers said. “(The planning team) respected community and they respected ownership, and I think they’ve formulated a plan that works for everyone and anyone. This is a river that is an asset for everyone to enjoy.”

Hamilton County activities corresponding with the unveiling of the plan include a White River films screening from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 6 at the Nickel Plate District Pavilion Conference Room at 6 Municipal Drive in Fishers, and June 7 is the eighth annual Canoe to Work Day plus yoga in the park at 4 p.m. at Federal Hills Commons, 175 Logan St. in Noblesville.

Police remind drivers of increased pedestrian traffic — With warm weather arriving, more joggers and bicyclists are on the roads across Hamilton County. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind drivers of the increased pedestrian traffic and to take extra caution. Indiana law states that a person who drives a motor vehicle overtaking a bicyclist shall provide at least 3 feet of clearance between the vehicle and bicycle if the vehicle is going 30 mph or less; drivers should add an additional foot for each additional 10 mph in speed.

Samara Norris was working at a small boutique as a Heritage Christian High School sophomore when she encountered a woman wearing a Miss Indiana COMPETITION shirt.

A conversation started, and the woman encouraged her to try the pageant world.

“For almost four years, she had been sending me paperwork, telling me to do it,” Norris said. “College came around, and I thought, ‘I’ll just do it.’”

After being fourth runner-up as Miss Purdue in November 2018, the Noblesville resident qualified for the Miss Indiana competition by winning the Miss Heart of the Midwest crown in Indianapolis in January.

The director of the Heart of Midwest was Chloe Anagnos, the same woman who had been encouraging her to enter.

“Now, she gets to lead me through Miss Indiana, so it’s kind of cool,” Norris said.

The Miss Indiana competition is June 15 at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center.

Miss Indiana is part of the Miss America system, whose officials announced in 2018 it is no longer a pageant and dropped the swimsuit portion.

“I think I always wanted to try it,” said Norris, who will be a Purdue sophomore this fall. “I just didn’t think I could actually do it.

It just hit me to try this. It was good for me to be surrounded by other beautiful, wellrounded women and not feel like I’m comparing myself to them and just to be able to have enough confidence to do that.”

Norris performed spoken-word poetry for her talent at Miss Heart of the Midwest, but she plans to sing and play guitar for her talent at Miss Indiana. Norris will sing “Shal-

low” by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.

Norris started a YouTube channel under the name Samara Faith when she was 15, performing her own spoken-word poetry.

“I had a huge passion for that, and it connects with a lot of young women,” Norris said. “Everyone wants to be so glam and perfect-looking, and real life isn’t like that. My spoken-word poetry piece was on beauty and what it means to be a woman.

Singing is basically like my spoken-word poetry but with a tune to it. I wanted to do something where I could play my guitar and push myself a little more.”

Norris auditioned for “The Voice” as a freshman in high school. She made it through three preliminary rounds.

“I had one more round to go (to make the show), but I didn’t make it through that,” she said. “I competed two more times and never made it through. I’ve been writing for a long time.”

Norris leads worship by singing at White River Christian Church in Noblesville and a church at Purdue.

Her Miss Indiana platform is “Speak Life: Inspiring Confidence Within Young Women.”

Noblesville’s Hamilton East Public Library completes final upgrades, enhanced lower level

By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com After two years of work, renovations for a huge resource for Noblesville residents are complete.

COVER STORY Changes to the main floor of the Noblesville branch of Hamilton East Public Library, 1 Library Plaza, have happened slowly while reworks of spaces and major renovations have been under way. But on June 1, library, county and city staff celebrated the completion of one of the facility’s biggest projects — the kids area, a complete lower-level revamp.

“It really is totally different down here,” said Edra Waterman, director of HEPL. “This has been a long time coming.”

Perhaps the most noticeable change is outdoors, where a new back entrance gives guests direct access to the kids area.

Instead of entering through the main entrance, walking through the library’s main floor and taking the stairs or elevator to get to the lower level, parents and kids now can park by the north side of the library and take a new path along a renovated outdoor area, which Waterman said also will be used for programming.

“Our goal was to beautify it and have things to interact with on the path,” she said of the new lighting, landscaping and artistic outdoor features.

Indoors, the new entrance has an open space that leads directly to a help desk and pickup/checkout area.

“Guests also will be able to use the children’s department as a location for holds pickups, so for moms that want to have their held items down here and don’t want to have to go upstairs, they can come down here and be with their kids while also getting their items,” Waterman said.

From there, the area is zoned, leading guests along a path from early literacy to older kids’ materials further back toward the core of the library.

A new spot in the lower level that was formerly staff space is now a large, imaginative play area, complete with an interactive wall for toddlers; tables with building toys; and a reading and lounging space.

Small changes have been made, too, like the way children’s books are oriented on the shelf – face-out, so covers can be seen and flipped through more easily by kids.

All of this is visually connected with a wall mural that stretches through the middle of the entire lower level, starting at the ramp of the new entrance.

“The vinyl graphic is representative of buildings that were created and based off

of downtown Noblesville’s buildings but in a cartoony way,” Waterman said.

What was the Teen Zone in the lower level now is a large program room, and for preteens and older children, the entire north side of the lower level, nearer to the central part of the library, serves as a quiet, dedicated study space with computer stations and moveable tables for individual study or tutoring sessions. The Teen Zone has moved upstairs.

“Moving the teens upstairs just made a lot of sense because a lot of the resources that our teens need are in the adult collection,” Waterman said. “So, if they’re doing

schoolwork, a lot of those reference materials are on the main floor.”

The new program room is significantly larger as well.

“Our story times have been getting bigger and bigger,” Waterman said. “Our old room was just too small, too cramped and just not adequate for the size of the groups that we’re serving and for the folks here in Noblesville to have a really great, inviting and welcoming space. We also want people from all over to visit. We see a lot of people who live right in between here and the Fishers branch. Both have the same library card and commitment to the kind of experience guests have.”

On the other side of the interactive wall for babies and toddlers is a feature for older kids: The Motion Magix gaming system, which cycles through educational games projected on the wall. Aesthetically, the high-energy feature is framed by rows of books, separating it from a large study area for older kids.

Per the lower level, Waterman said the primary goal was to open up space and make it more inviting for families.

“It felt very ‘basementy’ before, and now what we’ve tried to do is really take advantage of the fact that it opens to the outside,” Waterman said. “It’s at least twice as big as it was, and we also have a bunch of new books, too.”

Final touches are still being made librarywide for a vision that began several years ago.

“Before we did anything, we did a spaceplanning process where we worked from our 2015 strategic plan, where we had done focus groups and interviewed community folks, went out and looked to see what other libraries were doing and what was happening in other organizations,” Waterman said. “What we discovered was that we had a need in our community for more space. We needed more flexibility, too, because we saw over the years the needs that people have from the library — because we see the library as a placemaking institution — changes a lot. So, what we tried to do with this renovation was to build in that flexibility and to create open spaces that could be configured to meet whatever need anyone has.”

Commentary by Terry Anker Ours is increasingly a “youth” culture — not in that we have particular respect for the young, but more that we seem all too fixated on what it is to affect the impression of such in those of us who are decidedly not, at least in any real chronological way. Awaiting the semi-annual dental cleaning, one might peruse the accumulated and sundry magazines scattered in the waiting room. Even the casual observer flipping through the pages is struck by the age and appearance of the models shilling products and services. With the occasional expectation of pharmaceutical ads, the folks often sexualizing the goods are children. In fact, data aggregator Statista.com reports that 55 percent of working female fashion models begin younger than 16.

Of particular concern is that highend design houses are often the most egregious with children being used to overtly titillate and tempt.

One hopes that the world of shoppers is not secretly overwhelmingly comprised of pedophiles. So, why are children parading around in adult clothing like some perverted game of dress-up?

Has our obsession to see ourselves as young driven this twist?

Plastic surgeries, especially among men, are up exponentially these past decades. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, overall procedures are up 115 percent since the year 2000 alone.

Even more, we affect hipster language, wear clothing that, suffice it to say, may not be designed with a middle-aged body in mind.

Is it enough to say that we are the best we can be for our age group without fixating that we look the youngest? Can we like the age we are? Haven’t we earned it?

Another graduation jubilation Commentary by Danielle Wilson I survived another high school graduation, folks, and this time I never even came close to tears. Am I a terrible mother? Did I throw out my soul with the HUMOR thousands of dirty diapers I’ve changed? Or was my impressive lack of melancholy because seeing two more kiddos prepare to leave the nest makes me outrageously giddy? Let’s explore.

Despite winning co-Mom of the Year back in 2002 (yes, it’s true), I’ve definitely dropped the parenting ball on numerous occasions.

I’ve allowed naked toddlers in public libraries, forgotten middle-schoolers after practice and skipped dance competitions and color guard championships more times than I can count. I also rarely cook anything that doesn’t begin life in a Kraft box and yell at my family when they are loud past 9 p.m.. (Mama needs her sleep!). But terrible mother? My twins graduated, didn’t they?

And neither has been incarcerated!

And I’m not soulless. I’m stoic. If I’m going to become emotional, I much prefer the privacy of McDonald’s bathrooms and Chick-fil-A drive-thrus to a stadium full of strangers. So, I suppress all feelings until I can be alone (you’re welcome, by the way; I’m an awkward weeper). But that doesn’t mean I’m devoid of a soul (although being a redhead might!).

This brings us to the last possibility, that I’m simply excited to have finished the marathon of raising twins. And what a race it has been! When I remember those early days of double feedings, diaper changes and carseats, I’m amazed at how far they’ve come.

And how far I’ve come.

Was I going to cry over their graduation?

Absolutely not. Fist bumps were in order.

Riverview displays student art at Noblesville hospital

Each of the district’s 10 EXHIBIT schools will be represented in the rotating exhibit at Riverview’s Noblesville hospital Eighteen pieces of art by Noblesville East Middle School students are on display.

“A sense of community is a big part of who we are, so having the artwork of lo-

cal students displayed in our hospital fits perfectly with the culture we try to create,” said Seth Warren, president and CEO of Riverview Health. “We also realize the benefit of art to our patients as a healing element, so in addition to the artwork of local students, we have photography that resembles our community all throughout our hospital’s hallways.”

The student art pieces will be rotated out every quarter and range in multiple mediums, including painting, drawings, sculptures and collage art.

Westfield Playhouse signs up for ‘Social Security’

COMEDY The longtime Noblesville resident said “Social Security” was one she submitted as a possibility for her to direct for Main Street Productions.

“I chose it because I thought it would play well on their stage and because it is a lighthearted, funny play that deals well with some of our current cultural issues,” Otterman said.

Main Street Productions will present “Social Security” for eight performances June 14 to 30 at Westfield Playhouse.

“I had previously acted the role of Trudy in it years ago at The Red Barn Summer Theatre,” Otterman said. “I also used cuttings from it with my speech team at Hamilton Southeastern High School when I taught there.”

The story focuses on art gallery owner Barbara Kahn and her relationship with her mother, Sophie Greengrass. Trudy Heyman, Kahn’s sister, drops her mother off so she and her husband, Martin, can go check on her sexually precocious daughter at college.

Fishers resident Ka’Lena Cuevas plays Barbara. This is her third time performing in a Westfield Playhouse show.

“I have a troublesome relationship with my sister and mom, who come unexpectedly,” Cuevas said. “My mom literally gets dumped on my doorstop. It’s a very fun role to play. There is a lot of physical comedy. There’s lots of glib humor, sarcasm and sophisticated jokes. There are some poignant moments, too.”

Cuevas said it’s by far her most challenging role.

Erik Shaver, a southside Indianapolis resident, plays her husband, David. Shaver hasn’t performed since he was a student at Wabash about a decade ago. His friend, Cuevas, suggested he try it.

“This character is very glib, he’s very sarcastic,” Shaver said. “You should give it a read. When I read it, I thought it was great.”

Lisa Warner, from Westfield, is Trudy, who she describes as “a pain in the butt.”

This is her second show at Westfield Playhouse.

“I’ve been acting a little over three years,” Warner said. “I’ve enjoyed it very much and made a lot of new friends. This is a fun script. It’s fast-paced, lots of oneliners, lots of laughs, lots of sex jokes. Jen is one of my favorite directors, so working for her is a real fun thing for me.”

Thom Johnson, another Westfield resident, plays Martin. He has been in three of the last four shows at Westfield Playhouse.

“There is a challenge playing a character from New York and Jewish as far as accent,” Johnson said. “I’ve played a Jewish role before as Morrie in ‘Tuesday with Morrie’ for 18 performances at six different venues. The other challenge is timing. The timing in comedies is actually more difficult than a drama. I like the challenge.”

“I’m 90 years old, so I don’t have to worry about blocking or move around much,” Smith said. “I like the role because I love comedy, and this is a very quick, clever comedy. It’s not too big for me. I don’t have so many lines to memorize.”

Smith last appeared at Westfield Playhouse in “Picnic” in the summer of 2018, which Otterman also directed.

Smith performed in Catalyst Repertory’s “Master Class” with Indianapolis Opera in May and “To Kill a Mockingbird” with Civic Theatre in February. In between, he was in an Easter production for Legacy Bible Church in Noblesville.

“I try to keep busy all the time,” Smith said.

Duo to teach mini-camps

ART “We approached Fishers Parks and Recreation because I wanted to share my love of art with the children while giving them a fun summer camp,” Kalustian said.

Kalustian and her mother, Debbie Kalustian, a first-grade teacher at Brooks School Elementary, will run DJ Art Workshops’ mini-camps for three days for four weeks for ages 6-12 at Cumberland Park recreation building, 10580 Cumberland Rd., from 9 a.m. to noon. A 2017 Fishers High School graduate and Indiana Wesleyan University student, she has tutored kids in art at her university.

“I wanted to keep the camp themes both fun and engaging for the summer,” said Kalustian, who is studying elementary education and art. “I want these camps to be a memorable experience for the kids, so I chose themes that I thought they would have fun exploring with art. I love to work with children by inspiring them to expand their creativity. I think I will be able to do so through these camps.”

Debbie is looking forward to seeing her daughter instruct.

“Julia is so creative and fun and I’m excited to see her in action sharing her love of art with kids,” Debbie said. “She always loved art as a student in HSE schools and this is her way of giving back. I know the kids will love the themes and project ideas they will get to make with her at camp.”

It will now be easier to view Kroger Symphony on the Prairie’s performances from anywhere in the venue.

MUSIC “We have huge LED screens, so 8-meter screens, one on each side of the stage, and there is a 6-meter screen back near the playground towards the back of the lawn,” said Kristin Cutler, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra director of communications. “These will be magnifying the action on the stage during each concert. There will be additional content rolling on the screens prior to the concert. It will have more of a stadium-feel to it, so we think that will be an exciting enhancement to the concert experience.”

For 11 of the remaining concerts, there will be reserved seating for the area in front of the stage. Cutler said there will be 200 reserved seats. There is exclusive bar service in the reserved seating area and for the tables. The first three shows of the season had reserved seating as well.

Berlin’s dome of openness Commentary by Don Knebel Berlin’s Reichstag Building has become Germany’s second-most visited building, reflecting both its historical TRAVEL significance and its technological sophistication.

In 1871, independent German states united to form the German Empire, with its capital in Berlin. A committee of the Reichstag, the Imperial Diet, selected a site just north of the Brandenburg Gate for a new parliament building and held a competition to determine the building’s architecture. The winning design, featuring a steel and glass cupula at the center, was based on Philadelphia’s Memorial Hall, built for the 1876 World’s Fair. The Reichstag of the Weimar Republic met in the same building. In 1933, a fire, thought by many to have been started by the new Nazi government, severely damaged the building. Hitler immediately blamed Communists and radicals for the fire and used it as the pretext for assuming dictatorial powers. During World War II, the Reichstag Building was further damaged by Allied bombing. After the war, with the capital of West Germany in Bonn, the building

remained vacant.

After German reunification, the federal government moved its capital to Berlin and restored the Reichstag Building for use by the Bundestag, the German parliament.

The restoration included adding a huge glass dome at the center of the building, replacing the original cupula that had been destroyed. The Bundestag meets under the clear dome, symbolizing the openness of Germany’s democratic government. An inverted cone in the middle of the dome, covered in mirrors, directs daylight toward the legislative chamber and reflects the inside lights toward the dome at night. A giant shield inside the dome electronically follows the sun and blocks direct sunlight.

Two interior helical ramps allow citizens to climb to the dome’s apex, fostering the idea that the German people are above their government and also offering a spectacular 360-degree view of modern Berlin.

We’re the best at baseball, jazz, freedom, national parks — GRAMMAR GUY pretty much anything Ken Burns has already covered. Yes, living in the Land of Opportunity is glorious. Today, I’d like to award us (and, by us, I mean U.S.) a supersized gold medal for smashing words together more efficiently than anyone else in the world.

Because Americans value efficiency, we combine multiple words into one super word. One way we do this is through contractions. Don’t worry—I’m not talking about the kind of contractions that lead to babies. I’m talking about combining two words to make one short word. These words include don’t (do not), we’ve (we have) and can’t (can not). Yes, contractions increase our efficiency so we have more time to manage our burgeoning stock portfolios while refilling our Big Gulps (for free). But some contractions can be tricky.

Have you ever been tripped up by should’ve? Should’ve is a contraction for

“should have.” For instance, “I should’ve worn sunscreen when we were at the zoo.”

What about “should of?” As Americans, sometimes we talk so quickly we say things like “shoulda,” which is an even shorter way of saying “should’ve.” Many people mistakenly think this phrase is “should of.” “Should of” is incorrect and should never be spoken, typed or otherwise communicated. The same rule applies for “must’ve” (not must of), “could’ve” (not could of), and “would’ve” (not would of).
