It’s beginning to look a lot like summer in Noblesville. And it all begins Saturday.

Farmers Market

Sponsored by Noblesville Main Street, the 19-year-old Noblesville Farmers Market is the oldest in Hamilton County and runs from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays through October 30 – rain or shine, beginning Saturday.

As many as 3,000 customers a day come to the market to check out more than 65 booth spaces’ worth of produce, meat, crafts, fresh flowers, homemade pies, kettle corn and more.

At least 50 percent of a food seller’s products is grown by the seller.

The market is located at the intersection of State Road 32 and State Road 19, just west of the Conner Street Bridge in the Riverview Hospital overflow parking lot.

Summer Movie Series

Unlike the Farmers Market, which has been around for nearly two decades, the City of Noblesville outdoor summer movie series is in only its second year.

The free series opens Saturday with the screening of “Cars” and closes Oct.

With the exception of “E.T.,” all of the movies will be shown on 30-foot inflatable screen at the Events Lawn at Dillon Park near 146th Street and Hazel Dell Parkway. “E.T.” will be shown on the corner of 9th and Logan as part of the October 1 First Friday event.

The series also includes: “Hoosiers,” June 12 “The Blindside,” July 10 “Ratatouille,” Aug. 21 “Wall-E,” Sept. 14.

Pool and the beach

The Forest Park Aquatic Center, which opens Saturday, includes a newly lined, heated Olympic-size, 10-lane, 50-meter pool and a separate diving pool with 1-meter and 3-meter spring boards. The pool has a water slide and a new climbing wall. Infants and toddlers can enjoy their own zeroentry, activity pool with a frog slide, geysers and a wall of water.

The pool is open from noon to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, noon to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and noon to 6 p.m. Sundays.

For a low-key dip, Dillon Park has a free, multi-functional spray park.

Morse Park and Beach open May 29. Facilities include a bathhouse with rest rooms, showers and lockers.

Pool, movies, market signal season’s start

‘Charming’ downtown should not be kept a secret Editor: I was in Noblesville recently on business and had no idea its downtown had bloomed into such a fabulous place. It was charming and vibrant. The businessman I met with also had not been to the heart of Noblesville. He was enthralled. He lives in downtown Chicago and loves it. However, he was enchanted by the entire atmosphere of the Noblesville area as he drove in for our series of meetings. As we talked through driving directions by phone of how to get to The Hamilton, he kept raving about all the charming buildings. It was clear that there were so many options for lunch,

and post-meetings, for coffee (I later stopped at Noble Coffee). Something about the Square and the surrounding streets made me want to park and get out and wander around. I was tempted to buy something, even though I normally dislike shopping. Is it possible there is a mood of cheer that hovers over downtown? I don’t know, but I plan on coming back soon to find out. Too bad their marketing isn’t more effective. It is worth the drive to step into that world. They are worthy of being called a Place of Destination.

It is our position that we people of Hamilton County are lucky to be served by some of the finest men in uniform anywhere in our state. On May 5, law enforcement and political leaders from around the county gathered to show support for these brave men and women who have put their lives on the line day in and day out to help serve and protect and who paid the ultimate price for their service with their lives.

While it can be hard to appreciate police officers as they serve in the daily duties of traffic control and dispute resolution, remember that all interactions are not so common place as a ticket for speeding. More routinely they are exposed to more significant law breakers. They put their lives on the line to make our streets safer. It’s hard to imagine a more noble life.

So, next time we are speaking to an officer, let’s remember to show them the respect they deserve both for their uniform and for their willingness to make a sacrifice on our behalf. Absent that thin blue line, our lives would be dramatically different and not in a way that most would enjoy.

Don't drink the water

It is our position that the folks at British Petroleum should have been far more prepared than it seems they were for an oil spill like the one that followed the tragedy on their Gulf-based pumping platform offshore of the American coast. While BP is making efforts to clean up the spill, we believe that the company’s lack of adequate planning may have contributed to the looming disaster for sea life and our shores. With an adequate plan in place, could they have reacted more quickly to the disaster? We believe so.

The domes that have been put in place to contain the oil should have been built and waiting for such an eventuality. This is not a unique event.

And BP executives should have taken all the necessary precautions to contain an oil spill as quickly as possible. However, our Federal government must guard against overreaction and throwing fuel prices back above the $4 mark. Consuming resources is a messy (but profitable) business. Care must balance cost. But likewise, cost must balance care. Make BP pay the price, as appropriate, but do not summarily harm the larger industry in some retaliatory strike against big oil or for the radical left.

Speaking of columnists: In a Letter to the Editor a few weeks ago, a reader who disagreed with columnist and naturopathic doctor Carol Rossetti’s opinion on vaccinations assumed in print that Rossetti did not have a bachelor’s degree in science and that, in his words, if she had taken any form of upper-level chemistry she would have known there is no link between vaccination and autism.

While I won’t pretend to know enough about the issue to take sides, I will tell you that, not only does Rossetti’s education include a heavy dose of science education, she was a pre-med student at UCLA and a professor in the school of Pharmacology at Butler University. Just thought I’d mention that.

By Danielle Wilson My 8-year-old daughter came home the other day in tears. She had just been to her first talent show rehearsal, and the practice had not gone well. At least in her mind.

“Our music didn’t work (sob), we messed up on the words (sniffle) and NO (sob) BODY (sniffle) CLA-APPED (all out weeping).”

After I gave her some there, there’s and talked her back from the ledge, she elaborated. “The microphone made my voice sound weird, and being on stage made my tummy go wooshy. I don’t want to do it anymore!” OK then, quit.

But wait, Wilsons aren’t quitters! Besides the fact that she made a commitment, and we try and teach our children it’s important to follow through on commitments, I want her to go through this process so she can gain confidence in public speaking. And who knows, maybe even have fun while she’s doing it.

Unfortunately, it’s hard for me to understand her fears, as I am a closet starlet (Lights! Camera! Danielle!), though whenever I have to speak or perform (my sister-in-law and I do a killer lounge singer act), I need to do shots of Immodium just to keep out of the pot. But I know that if I can just push through the anxiety, I’ll do more than simply survive the experience, I’ll truly enjoy it.

So we’ve talked to her about how feeling like you’re going to vomit is natural; that almost everyone gets nervous before having to stand in front of a big group of people. In fact, the almighty Internet ranks public speaking as the second most common phobia, after the fear of spiders. Her dad, for example, has struggled for most of his life with giving talks and speeches.

His fear of speaking also prevented him from making toasts at his siblings’ weddings and has caused full-blown panic attacks at work prior to meetings in which he was to present.

He has only recently been able to conquer some of that fear with the help of beta blockers and behavioral baby-step therapy.

(Way to go, Doo!) But I often wonder how he ended up this way and what kinds of steps we can take as parents to make sure our kids don’t follow in his anxiety-ridden footsteps.

As of today, five days before the big show, she is back on board with performing. She has to get through a dress rehearsal, which may send her packing, but by that time, her name will already be in the program and she’ll be locked in. Her brothers continue to make fun of her, but as we have pointed out, they are too scaredy cat to even try, so their opinions are poo.

More than anything, I want her to enjoy this experience. I would hate for this to be the moment in her life when she decides that she’s never ever ever going to speak in front of people again; that she develops her father’s phobia and misses out. Because I expect at least one of my kiddos to inherit my love of the stage and to provide good quality entertainment at family functions after I’m too old to don a beaded gown and belt out a Barbra Streisand number. A run through the neighborhood right up my alley – and elsewhere Commentary

By Krista Bocko I’ve never been a runner. I never understood how people could possibly run and even find it enjoyable. My husband started running six years ago and I thought he was crazy, too.

But some odd reason I decided to try running again this spring. And guess what? I’ve found that I like to run.

However, the conditions have to be right.

Yes, I am fickle.

I’ve found out what I don’t like, and I don’t like treadmill running. All I can do on the treadmill is fixate on the blinking red dot going around the track oh-so-slowly until I get my requisite time in. I fiddle with the speed; I speed up, I slow down, I hope I don’t fall. Then when I get off I careen back and forth trying to get used to a surface that isn’t moving anymore.

I feel like if I’m going to run, I want to go somewhere, see something, see the ground I’m covering.

So, here’s what I do like: I like running

through my neighborhood. To me it seems like the best place to run. This spring I have breathed deep the heady perfume of flowering shrubs and have seen places I just don’t walk to.

The routes I can take are endless—an alley here, a sidewalk there, and the grassy area surrounding a tiny, old cemetery tucked between a school and commercial buildings.

I notice the juxtaposition of the well-kept homes and outbuildings and those that need some love. I hear the sound of my feet hitting the pavement in time with the music on my iPod as I notice the clock tower of the courthouse looming ahead of me at the end of the alley.

This is where love of my neighborhood and finding a love of running meet.

‘Reality’ rally Americans for Prosperity president Tim Phillips addressed a gathering of Hamilton County residents at Forest Park in Noblesville last Wednesday to warn them about the future under possible regulations by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The goal of the nationwide “AFP Regulation Reality Tour” is to build grassroots pressure against President Obama’s attempt to pass some global warming regulations without a vote of Congress. “Our message to Congress is simple: If you don’t stop the EPA, we will hold you responsible for the lost Indiana jobs and higher energy prices,” said Phillips. He encouraged citizens to sign a petition urging Senator Evan Bayh to support the bipartisan resolution in the Senate.

Style: This home reflects the late Queen Anne style (sometimes referred to as Free Classic), but with simpler, more reserved elements. It has smooth classical columns and square balusters, an irregular roofline and multiple gables, which is typical for the Queen Anne’s, as is the wrap-around porch.

Cosmetic features: The dark-stained bead board ceiling under the porch remains beautifully intact. One particularly ornate feature on this home is the front door, which has carved wreath and garland accents.

“We’ve painted the exterior, replaced the fence, and replaced some downed trees. We also remodeled our kitchen, using some “green” materials including linoleum flooring (made from linseed oil), Amish-made cabine-

try, and an energy-efficient dishwasher. “ What are your favorite features? “The wraparound porch is definitely my favorite feature.

I also love the fact that the kitchen and living room are very accessible to one another. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen and wanted one that didn’t feel separated from the rest of the living space.”

By Leslie Webber I am amazed at the continued generosity of the people of Noblesville. At a time when it isn’t necessarily easy to give, small business owners continue to support our community and schools.

My family had a retail store in my hometown.

It seemed as though every Little Leaguer, youth group president, and PTO chair made their way through our doors to ask for donations. My parents always gave as much as they could. I know there were lean years when it was harder to give, but they found something to donate because they believed “it was the right thing to do.”

Our elementary school recently held the annual school carnival. I was discussing the carnival’s silent auction with next year’s PTO president. She stressed to me how important it was that our carnival was a successful fundraiser.

Schools are operating on razor-thin budgets.

Students and teachers are making do and getting by with the basics. Funds raised through events like school carnivals and silent auctions allow PTO’s to fund things that had to be cut

from the budget. Things like field trips. I would hate to miss an opportunity to chaperone 200 rowdy third graders.

Recently, The Kroger Co. donated $3,500 to one of the elementary schools to help fund a literacy project. The funds will be used to purchase books the school otherwise would not have been able to afford. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that my grocery store trips for bread that result in $57 worth of other purchases funded the entire grant. I’m pleased to see the dollars I spend locally reinvested in our community.

While it might be a tough time for retailers and restaurants to give, their donations matter more than ever. My family has decided we will make every effort to support the businesses who donate so generously to our community. It’s our way of saying “thank you” for their help in making Noblesville a great place to live.

Painful path to normalcy Couple survives test of rape aftermath; victim is honored with Courage Award

By Martha Allan Current in Noblesville After being abducted, raped, beaten and stuffed in the trunk of her car, Michelle Meyer’s life seemingly came to a standstill.

She and her then-boyfriend Chris Corrao didn’t go anywhere for 12 months after that night.

They were just “trying to deal,” recalled Chris, who had been dating Michelle for about a year prior to the incident.

The horrifying event would take them down a path of pain,

fear and frustration that would end with their relationship tested but intact.

Many victims do not stay in the relationship they were in before their assault. The aftermath of sexual assault is a strain for victims’ companions as well as victims.

Noting sexual assault victims feel dirty, shame and guilt, Michelle said, “You feel like nobody’s going to love you again.”

“I’m amazed he stayed with me,” said added.

But he did. They were married Nov. 14, 1998, and today live a normal life with two children, Christian, 10, and Olivia, 6, two rewarding careers and, finally, closure to a devastating experience.

The children do not know all the details of their mother’s ordeal. Their parents will share more as the kids grow older.

Michelle’s experience eventually led her to work on behalf of crime victims. Today, the 46-year-old Noblesville resident is community relations director for Prevail, a Hamilton County-based organization that serves victims of crime and abuse.

In that role, she speaks to law enforcement and medical professionals who come in contact with crime victims, and urges sensitivity and compassion.

While Michelle was not looking for any kind of honor for her continuing battle against crime and abuse, she received one last month when she was named the recipient of the 2010 Special Courage Award, a firsttime award for a Hoosier.

She and her family traveled to Washington, where she was honored

by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

“It was all very surreal to be honored,” she said, recalling in wonder how the attorney general, as he was presenting her award, simply opened his arms and hugged her.

Michelle’s trauma began the night of Sept. 12, 1996, when she was abducted from her Fort Wayne doorstep. She was beaten and raped by three men, then locked in the trunk of her car. She was rescued by an off-duty police detective, Arthur Billingsley, who heard her cries for help from inside the trunk of the car.

Chris, alerted to Michelle’s abduction by a state police officer, was by her side at the hospital as she went through a series of exams, tests and treatments. He became an advocate for her care, noting what medications and tests she was given.

Then he took her home, where, as he recalled, they didn’t go anywhere for a year.

During nearly three years of seeing her case through the legal system (the men were sentenced to life in prison), Michelle and Chris sought to regain a sense of normalcy.

Both say it was extremely difficult.

“I would listen, she’d want feedback; I’d give her feedback and she’d say just shut up and listen,” recalled 48-year-old Chris, a partner/owner of Unity Sales, a manufacturers rep company.

Michelle eventually found a therapist she was comfortable with, but the search for one made her realize there were not enough services to help victims of sexual assault. Eventually, Chris joined her for some sessions.

“It opened my eyes a bit to what she was going through,” he said. “I will never understand what she went through that night.

I can’t.”

Billingsley, the detective who rescued Michelle, is a family friend who was with them in Washington. The couple’s faith and love have given them the courage to put their lives back together.

“If it wouldn’t have been for him,” said Michelle, looking at her husband. “I don’t know that I would be sitting here today.”

Checkbook balancing act first step for maximizing your credit score COMMENTARY

By Kevin Riley I have been asked hundreds of times for advice on maximizing credit scores. The obvious answer is to always pay your bills on time.

Next obvious “secrets” are to limit the number of accounts with balances, keep any balances far below the limits and avoid miscellaneous department store credit cards.

However, I have yet to see in print the one surefire first step you can do towards a goal of attaining the highest credit score possible. Drumroll, please… BALANCE YOUR CHECKBOOK! Balancing your checkbook will help you avoid overdraft charges, plus you’ll likely find charges to your account that you had no idea you authorized.

When I say balance your checkbook, I mean to the penny. If it’s one penny off, how do you know that it is not 10 incorrect items that net out to one cent? If one of the incorrect items is an outstanding check that later bounces the account, the next thing you know your bank will sock you with a totally unreasonably punitive series of fees.

These fees tend to be outrageous, yet they remain legal, despite any banking “reforms.”

They are a significant part of your bank’s revenue budget, and therefore they truly are out to get you.

Not only will you eliminate bank charity, but by balancing your checkbook to the penny, you’ll likely find charges to your account that you had no idea you okayed. A common scam is the “coupon club” you inadvertently signed up for when you paid for a pizza online. You can protest these fees and get most of them back.

With this money and the money not given to the bank, you can pay your other bills… on time.

And don’t depend on your memory to register every time you used your debit cards or make a checking transaction. Write it down before you walk away.

A full-service pizza restaurant originating out of Florida has made a new location in Carmel. Tony Sacco’s Coal Oven Pizza opened in Clay Terrace April 19 and has already pleased a number of customers. Many plan to return after tasting the entirely madefresh pizzas cooked at 1,000 degrees in a coal oven. It’s important for them to have a good time and enjoy what they’re eating. Bartock said that he believes the new start up will prove beneficial for the community. The food and atmosphere are great, and the location aids in showing that the community can continue to grow even when the economy has been stunted.

Richard Carriger understands the meaning of service leadership. For years, he has worked diligently as the head of church missions for Carmel United Methodist Church traveling to remote areas like Bangladesh and Vietnam.

When Richard joined the Rotary Club six years ago, he sought to expand his local volunteerism. As Richard put it, “I think everyone should be active in their community. And, I view CarmelFest as a # 1 local event.” This year, Richard is the Volunteer Committee CoChair for CarmelFest, helping to organize a team of 250 volunteers to support the festival.

When he is not volunteering, Richard manages his own business, Richard J Carriger Co., building custom homes. He and his wife, Debbie, have lived in Carmel for over 30 years. By Chris Lloyd In the last decade or so, we’ve come to expect that everything director Clint Eastwood touches has a patina of Oscar gold. His movies have racked up so many Academy Award nominations, and wins, that each new film is greeted with the fanfare reserved for a masterpiece.

On that score, “Invictus” is a disappointment – a fine, though hardly great film. Morgan Freeman plays Nelson Mandela, the South African activist who was called a terrorist, jailed and kept in isolation for 27 years, released and elected president of the country that oppressed him. Matt Damon plays Francois Pienaar, the captain of the nearly all-white Springboks national rugby team, who became Mandela’s partner in an unlikely quest to unite their fractured nation through sports.

Screenwriter Anthony Peckham, working from a book by John Carlin, explores how Mandela used rugby for explicitly political purposes, reasoning that just getting blacks and whites to cheer for the same team would do more than a hundred speeches or marches.

Eastwood stumbles a bit in presenting so much on-screen action of a sport Americans care less for than the rest of the world. The climactic game just seems to go on and on.

It’s still an inspiring sports movie, though just a good sports movie.

Ice cream treat is almost frozen and totally delicious

By Molly Herner Current in Noblesville Have you always wanted to make ice cream at home, but don’t have an ice cream maker?

You’re in luck because I have an easy and delicious Italian ice cream recipe. Semifreddo, meaning “almost frozen” is actually more like rich, frozen cream custard. You can flavor the semifreddo however you like.

I love this recipe for a raspberry and choco-

late semifreddo made into a yummy ice cream cake. So, next time the honored birthday guest requests ice cream cake, try this cake instead of the Dairy Queen.

Raspberry Chocolate Semifreddo Ice Cream Cake Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups fresh raspberries • 1/2 bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips • 3 cups of heavy whipping cream • 6 eggs, separated • 1 1/4 cup of fine granulated sugar • Chocolate sauce • Large, freezer-proof bowl • Plastic wrap Directions: 1. Whisk eggs and sugar together and put over simmering water, a double boiler, until thick.

2. Remove from heat and continue to whisk until completely cool.

3. Mash raspberries in a separate dish.

4. Whip cream until very thick and forms stiff

peaks.

5. Fold raspberries and egg mixture into the cream.

6. Chop chocolate chips until they are shapeless and fold them into the mixture as well.

7. Line the freezer-proof bowl with plastic and pour the semifreddo into the bowl. Let the semi-fredo sit at least overnight.

8. When you plate the dessert let the bowl sit out for 2 minutes and then cover the bowl with a platter and flip the bowl over. Peel away all of the plastic and immediately return to the freezer until served.

9. Slice the semifreddo like a normal cake and garnish with fresh raspberries and chocolate sauce.

By Tracy Line Hotels are stepping up to help those who want to stay in shape while they travel. Not only do more and more of them offer fitness centers, but many offer on-demand TV workouts, and even in-room fitness equipment.

According to www.cnbc.com, the hotels with the best gyms are The Houstonian in Houston, the Mandarin Oriental in New York City, Le Parker- Meridian in New York City, Ritz-Carlton in Boston Commons, and Four Seasons Miami.

Nice to know. But what if you are not staying in one of those fine hotels?

You can find others more reasonably priced at Web sites like www.HotelGymReview. com and www.AthleticMindedTraveler.com.

HotelGym Review lists hotels with gyms and allows users to rate them, all for free. I prefer AthleticMindedTraveler, which does the rating of hotel gyms for you, gives area information, and even lists local gyms for each destination. While much information is free, this site also offers additional benefits for paying subscribers.

Another option is Exercise TV, an ondemand workout video library many have access to at home, is now available at hotel chains nationwide.

Work your abs, your gluts, or your entire core, all from the comfort of your hotel room. Exercise TV is available at the Hyatt, Marriott, Loews, Omni, Radisson, and Doubletree. Videos are free, but not available in all rooms within a hotel, so ask before you book.

For the best of both worlds, stay at a hotel offering in-room exercise equipment. The Omni will deliver a treadmill to your room for a nominal fee. The Westin has Westin Workout rooms where for a few dollars more your room includes either a treadmill or spinning cycle, weights, resistance bands and expert designed in-room workout routines.

The ‘little black dress’ of decorating Commentary

By Vicky Earley There is no argument against the idea that the little black dress is a fashion icon.

Combined with a scarf and sweater, the little black dress is casual standout. Later in the day, that same dress – dressed with pearls or diamonds – is an elegant sensation worthy of an evening out!

Interior design, much like fashion, can benefit from that same “little black dress.” In an interior setting, that little black dress could be an oyster-colored sofa; it could be a brown sectional; or it could even be a pair of black settees! The key is a focus on solid color and an awareness of texture.

I knew we had achieved the “little black dress” phenomenon when a client told us how much she liked our new sofa. I know this client has seen this sofa before – in fact, she has sat on this sofa! The “outfit” the sofa was wearing was the key: It was dressed in a mélange of black and white pillows in various designs and patterns. A brilliant silver Doberman statue was placed near it like a piece of fine jewelry.

This client had recently seen this same sofa when it had a support role in a Hemmingway-inspired room setting dressed with leather and paisley pillows. Before that, it had co-starred in an urban-room scene with bold red and black hounds-tooth pillows and chairs.

The secret to this chameleon sofa is not that it is“neutral beige,” which is the perceived safe haven of decorating. No, this sofa is a large, solid black sofa that teeters between traditional and

modern. It is on legs with casters – offering a nod to modern – but it sports a camel back, thus blending with traditional. Texture is a boucle that is invited into most design settings.

The little black dress concept is perfect for those who like many styles and avoid style commitment because of a fear of boredom. A solid foundation to a room is the perfect setting for building and interior fashion statement. The sofa is the dress, and the pillows are the jewelry! Just like a floral sundress, a large-pattern sofa is destined to be what it is with little opportunity for change.

The little black dress sofa might wear an array of large, solid color down pillows and a cashmere throw that beckons one to enter the room and cuddle up on a rainy day. The next day, that same sofa might be dressed in an abundance of pillows – all different and dressed up with design and embellishment. A furry rug at the foot of this sofa says it is dressed for an evening of entertaining!

If you are interested in trying the little black dress technique in decorating, remember; don’t try to match exact colors for your pillows. Consider color families and go lighter and darker! Also, experiment with layering patterns, texture and embellishments.

Silly, yes, but they don't need batteries COMMENTARY

By Hannah Davis “What the heck are Silly Bandz?” my dad asked me last weekend.

I suddenly found myself Yes – 21 (70%) trying to explain the most riNo – 9 (30%) diculous trend I’ve ever been fortunate enough to witness.

In different shapes. They, like, pop back in place after you stretch them. And they come in different colors!”

“Oh,” he said, clearly not understanding why they were such a darn big deal. “So, are they, like, for little kids?”

And then I had to admit the unthinkable: “No, kids my age wear them, too.”

My sister piped up.

“I have a friend who wears at least 50 of them every day!” She wasn’t kidding. I’ve seen this girl.

Sold in packs of 12 for about $2.50, or 24 for about $5, the silicon bands are organized according to theme: animals, princesses, alphabet, Western, for example. Kids stack them on their wrists and trade them. The best and most coveted ones glow in the dark.

As invasive, low tech, and mindless as Silly Bandz are, I have to give ‘em props; it’s refreshing to see a generation wrapped up in Wiis and iPods find an interest that comes without wires.

Field Day finale Legacy Christian School students in grades 6 and up played games with the Tri County Education Center kids at the last Field Day at Tri County recently. The end-of-year celebration was the final one since Tri County will soon be closing its doors. “The kids from Legacy come every year to make our field day possible, and we truly appreciate it,” said Tri County administrator Deb Lorenz.” The day ended with a dance on the patio.

Using the right tools makes a big difference in genealogical search COMMENTARY

By Darla Kinney Scoles The law of attraction suggests that thoughts influence chance, our subconscious can affect things outside our head, and that like is drawn to like. Usually these ideas are shared as a way to achieve success, make money, or influence others.

I believe such a law is in force in the genealogy realm, as well.

Time and time again, I have seen – and experienced for myself – an individual begin an ancestry quest, only to be mysteriously contacted by long, lost relatives with information to share.

Simply saying, or even pondering, the words “I think I’ll do some research on my father’s side” can bring into one’s world a slew of documents, people, and opportunities to obtain exactly what one set out wondering about.

“Share your knowledge, it is a way to achieve immortality”, is oft-quoted in the family history community.

A fellow student in my current genealogy class mentioned such a phenomenon this week,

as she found a distant aunt leaving phone messages about getting in touch. Then, as she planned a road trip with her father, he mentioned including this aunt on the visit as well. And no, the aunt and father had not spoken to one another.

My own email collection this week included a message from a relative who, out of the blue, sent a list of names she had come across in an old family Bible. Some of the names I already had. Others sent me in an entirely new direction.

I think the genealogical law of attraction is alive and well and bringing families together all over the world.

Try it out. Do a little digging and see what happens. Chances are you’ll attract some attention. My advice: Take whatever comes your way with open arms, whether you can give it much attention now or not. One day you will.

Maybe it’s time to evaluate our busy lives Commentary

By Janna Lynas Have you ever tried to coordinate a Cubs baseball game with five seats together and a free day at the Field Museum in Chicago?

Seems doable (except maybe the five seats together) but I’m beginning to think it’s impossible. Then I remember, “All things are possible with God.” I wonder if that includes Cubs tickets?

In order to make this summer trip happen my husband had to move a meeting, check the softball schedule; make sure the trip wouldn’t interfere with 4-H week or basketball camp or any other events that all seem to take place over the summer.

Oh, did I mention I had to make sure we didn’t overlap a month-long stay by my sisterin-law’s mother?

I’ve come to the conclusion that my perfect fun and cheap-er trip may be ridiculously impossible. Why? We’re busy, and so is everyone else and evidently all at the same time!

Of course, this is nothing new. People have been busy for centuries. Busy preparing and

cooking meals. Busy caring for their children.

Busy working to support their family.

But they were also busy living the full life Jesus tells us can be ours in John 10:10.

In this really great book called “Making Room for Life” author Randy Frazee writes about our hectic lifestyles.

He describes the Hebrew day as beginning at 6 p.m. and ending at 6 a.m. Their day actually began in the evening with 4 hours reserved for relationships, for eating together and for sharing the stories we now read in our bibles. Then came 8 hours of sleep each night. Finally, 12 hours were constructed for productivity and work.

Is this lifestyle even possible today?

I try to live it, but sometimes a busy life gets the best of me -- instead of my kids, my husband and my God. I think it’s time to reevaluate just what my life is full of.

Last year’s seedlings are this girl’s best friend I am always finding surprise seedlings in my garden.

Morning glories consistently pop up near the spot I planted them the year before, alongside sunflowers, which make a handsome pair I might add.

Other flowers that put in double time are cornflowers (Centaurea cyanus), love-in-a-mist (Nigella damascena), Mexican sunflowers (Tithonia rotundifolia) and touchme-nots (Impatiens capensis).

And it just would not be spring in my garden without my recurring cast of Johnny-jump-ups (Viola tricolor). I often catch them jumping up in the lawn…much better than crabgrass.

You know, if I had a nickel for every dollar I saved by putting my volunteers to work instead of buying more flowers, I just might have enough for those diamonds. But then I would probably just turn around and use that money for mulch. Hopeless.

By Holly Funk Could it be the weed gods have smiled on me? In my garden amongst patches of plantain and crabgrass are salvia sprouts.

Having painstakingly selected a number of annuals from the garden center, it now seems that I have dozens of these feral seedlings standing their ground against the weeds in my garden. I seriously doubt diamonds could make me as happy.

I’ve heard people say that they don’t like to garden with annuals because they have to plant them every year. Phooey.

Many of the annuals I have growing in my garden right now are seedlings from last year’s plants. This year’s snapdragons are volunteers from last year’s bunch. That one dollar package of seed spawned a whole mess of color. I love it.

Being a thrifty gardener, I even let a few perennials like purple coneflower (Echinacea purpea) and blackberry lily (Belamcanda chinensis) self-sow.

I move them around to where I’d like for them to grow and if I can’t keep them all, I give them away. Who doesn’t love free plants?

The subject is … stuff.
