Trash service solicitation — The City of Noblesville says it has learned of solicitation of trash services for Noblesville residents to replace the Noblesville Common Councilapproved monthly trash fee of $10.57 per month. City officials said they would like to remind residents that under city ordinance, a residence cannot opt out of paying for city-provided trash removal. As part of the city’s contract with Republic Services, any property-tax-paying residence within city limits receives trash removal. If a resident signs another contract, they will be paying extra for trash removal. Implementation of the fee begins June 1, payable after July 1, and will be included within sewer bills.

Kiwanis flags — The Noblesville Noon Kiwanis is selling Memorial Flags to be placed around the Historic Courthouse on the Memorial Day Weekend. The flag can be purchased in memory of someone or in honor of someone. The cost of each flag is $5. The Noblesville Noon Kiwanis group will prepare a laminated card to be placed on the flag. The flags will go up May 26 and will be taken down May 31. Junior Law Enforcement Academy — Applications are now being accepted for the annual Hamilton Co. Junior Law Enforcement Academy, a one-day program that highlights law enforcement activities. Ind. 32/38 shifts for Presley extension news@currentnoblesville.com With work that began May 9, E & B Paving Inc. has shifted traffic lanes on Ind. 32/38 in Noblesville. road work The lanes have moved to the south side of the highway for crews to begin construction of a roundabout at Presley Boulevard, one-quarter mile east of Ind. 37.

A precast, concrete box culvert to channel a tributary of Stony Creek will be installed under the highway as part of the project, which will require closing Ind. 32/38 for up to 14 days beginning in June. A specific closure date will be announced by INDOT in the future.

INDOT said during the road closure, a signed detour will route state highway traffic south to Interstate 69 via State Road 37 and State Road 13.

All lanes are expected to be open to traffic in September, and all work on the $1.6 million contract is expected to be complete before the end of this year.

Food insecurity on the rise Commentary by Cindy Hubert When most of us think of food insecurity, we think of urban areas like downtown Indianapolis or very giving rural communities. Most of us don’t think of affluent suburbs like Carmel, Noblesville or Westfield.

But, surprisingly, we’re seeing the highest increases in food insecurity in areas like Hamilton County.

With nearly 27,000 people struggling with food insecurity in Hamilton County, hunger is a very real problem. But how would you know if a neighbor was food insecure? Hunger isn’t easy to see.

After Sara’s dad lost his executive job last fall, it wasn’t long until the family was unable to pay their mortgage. So far, he’s been unable to find a similar position, so he now works nights to earn just enough to cover some of their expenses. After paying for the basics, there isn’t much left to buy groceries.

Thankfully, Sara’s school participates in Gleaners’ BackSacks: Weekend Food for Kids program, so she gets a small bag of food on Fridays to help out when she can’t eat breakfast and lunch at school.

Sara dresses like the other kids. Her family drives their same car. How would you know Sara was hungry?

Most likely, you wouldn’t.

Gleaners is working to feed hungry men, women and children in Hamilton County through programs like BackSacks, School-Based Pantry, the Mobile Pantry and Summer Meals for Kids. My Indy 500 tradition genesis Commentary by Ashley Santasiero, LPN, West Unit Manager at Harbour Manor and The Lodge, a CarDon facility My grandpa, Grover Waitt, started going to the Indy 500 in 1948, when he was just 19 years old. He never missed a race day year. My grandma always said that when he got home from the race, he would say he couldn’t wait until the next year.

In 1973, Salt Walther had a horrible crash in which flaming methanol and car parts were thrown into the crowds, injuring several spectators, my grandpa included. Those seats were later removed from the track. That never stopped him from returning to the 500.

I remember being young and hearing my grandpa, two cousins and uncle start talking about the Indy 500 months in advance. I was always jealous because I was too young to go and would end up having to go shopping with my grandma and mom.

In 1993, at the age of 8, I finally got my chance to go. I remember having to get up extremely early that morning. My grandma had packed us lunchmeat sandwiches, chips, cookies and a cooler of drinks.

seen so many people in one place. It was a little overwhelming at the time, but my grandpa held my hand all the way. I will never forget hearing Florence Henderson singing the National Anthem, Jim Nabors singing “Back Home Again in Indiana,” or Mary Hulman George giving the starting command. It was a long day, but one of the most memorable days of my life.

Emerson Fittipaldi won that day. I wasn’t really sure of who that was at the time, but I didn’t care. This was my new tradition.

Cartoonist Campbell wins again

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Shortly after Current in Carmel launched in 2006, Tim Campbell decided to try his hand at an editorial cartoon. recognition His first cartoon? Having a little fun with Carmel’s roundabouts. Campbell had noticed Current was looking for submissions.

“I drew up a sketch and sent it to (executive vice president/general manager) Steve Greenberg in an Campbell email, and he sent me an email within 15 minutes and asked if I could do this all the time. That’s where it started,” Campbell said.

Now, nearly 10 years later, the 57-year-old Carmel resident won his third consecutive first-place award for an editorial cartoon in the Society of Professional Journalists Best in Indiana Journalism awards contest last month. It was the fifth time Campbell had won the contest. His winning cartoon was about the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles accounting scandal. He also took third place on New England quarterback Tom Brady breaking his cellphone during the “deflategate” debacle.

“Any time I can make fun of the New England Patriots, those are ones that I like a lot,” Campbell said. “I enjoy doing cartoons on Indiana issues more than national issues.”

Campbell is a freelance illustrator, with his biggest client being the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, and he teaches classes on fundamentals of design and color theory at Ivy Tech.

Campbell said he has received feedback on cartoons that are about area politicians.

“I’ve gotten responses that they are kind of flattered by it,” Campbell said. “Any publicity is good publicity — they kind of take that attitude about it.”

‘Christmas’ seeks volunteers news@currentnoblesville.com The generous attitude of the Christmas season isn’t limited to just one day of the year here in central Indiana.

Christmas in Acphilanthropy tion is a faith-based organization founded on the idea of neighbors helping neighbors – friends and strangers alike taking the initiative to reach out to lowincome, elderly or disabled individuals in need of home repairs.

In past years, Christmas in Action has helped replace floors, redo bathrooms, paint on both the interior and exterior of homes, build stairs and ramps, patch roofs and much more. It is an example of total community involvement, with many individuals volunteering to help complete these projects. Local businesses also get involved by donating supplies and/or food for the workers.

This year’s Christmas in Action Blitz Day will take place at 8 a.m. May 21. The organization is currently looking for qualified homeowners in need of assistance in completing home repairs. They are also looking for volunteers and businesses that can donate time, money, food or materials. All donations, in whatever form, are equally appreciated. Volunteers are not

Obituary John Wesley McDowell, Jr. John Wesley McDowell, Jr., 98, Cicero, died April 27 at Riverview Health at Noblesville.

He was born Feb. 12, 1918 at Fairbury, Neb. to John Wesley and Bura (Tuggle) McDowell, Sr. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Lincoln, Neb. John then served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII, receiving the American Theater Service Medal and the EAME Service Medal with two bronze stars, among other awards.

He became a draftsman for S.S. Kresge Co. that later became Kmart, using his artistic ability to design and provide the lay out for many stores. John was a painter, and his work included several murals. He designed and built a miniature model home, including all the furniture and decorations. His talents also included creating and tending to his flower gardens and writing an autobiography.

His family described John as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and

great-grandfather. He also loved helping others and was a volunteer for several years at Riverview Hospital.

He married Evelyn Berneice (Vibbert) McDowell Nov. 9, 1945. She survives him. Also surviving is a son, John Wesley McDowell III, and his wife Marla, of Carmel, a daughter, Jodi Lane Bickerstaff, and husband Joe, of Euless, Texas, a brother, Jimmy “Mac” McDowell, of Indianapolis, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Hertha Redmond, and a brother, Waldo McDowell.

Heroes’ homecoming Hamilton Co. Fallen Firefighters memorial statue arrives in Noblesville after nearly 9 years

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com It’s been nearly nine years since the idea for a fallen firefighters memorial for Hamilton Co. took hold, and this month, the completed statue made its crosscover story country trip home.

On May 2, family members of the three Hamilton Co. men who died in the line of duty got their chance to see the finished statue just outside of the Hamilton Co. Government and Judicial Center on the downtown Noblesville square.

The three fallen firefighters from Hamilton Co. are Noblesville Firefighter Byron J. Galbreath, Carmel Assistant Fire Chief Cyrus Clark and Fishers Assistant Fire Chief Raymond E. Moulder.

Pam Sims, 80, Noblesville, was the wife of Cyrus Clark when he died in Dec. 1960.

“I was 25, and he was 27,” she said.

The two had been married nearly seven years and had four children, the oldest of which was 6.

“I think it’s really nice that they’re memorializing those that have given up their life, because all firefighters, when they go out, you never know if they’re going to come home,” Sims said.

“My husband was gung-ho for the fire department.”

Gwen Galbreath, who will be 92 in September, was the wife of Byron Galbreath, who died in 1951 at age 31, leaving behind his 26-year-old wife and three daughters, who were all 5 years old or younger, Joyce Kinnman, Janet Jaros (former Noblesville clerk-treasurer) and Jo Rhodes.

“He had gotten home from the war and got with the National Guard. He heard how bad the fire was and went down to help,” said Rhodes, who was 2 years old at the time. “He had been a firefighter before the war.”

Now that the statue is home, the memorial site will need to be developed before it will be on display to the public as a point along the City of Noblesville’s in-development Riverwalk.

The memorial site will sit behind the government and judicial center on the east side of White River. The statue will remain in storage until the plaza is complete.

Also part of the memorial will be thee bronze helmet memorials for each fallen firefighter and, on a separate base, a piece of one of the World Trade Center towers from 9/11.

The prez race of all time?

Whatever else is said, this may be the most unique presidential election cycle in our lifetime. We have seen that the Republicans really are the party of the Big Tent. The tent got so big, in fact, those that thought they were in charge of the tent found themselves being pushed out the front flap.

The Republicans began with 17 contenders: one establishment type backed by big donors; one successful businesswoman; one brilliant, African-American surgeon; two sons of immigrants who are Latino; and then the senators and governors and a billionaire capitalist. Not the usual suspects. Republicans didn’t get any credit for diversity.

We have seen the silent majority give up on the powers that be - the “establishment” - and look for an outsider. As soon as a candidate gained establishment support, his numbers dropped like a stone.

Then there are the Democrats: an anointed nominee-to-be and an old Socialist, who was allowed to compete under the Democrats’ banner to create the illusion of a race.

But, suddenly, it became a real race as the harmless, old Socialist became a raging tiger with his own supporters that have also given up on their “establishment.”

The angst of the silent majority and the alienation of the young created the rise of outsider candidates. Now, America is seeing for the first time the arcane and convoluted convention rules put in place by the establishment just in case, this whole democracy thing got out of hand.

To paraphrase a famous actress, fasten your seatbelts; it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Economic engines of today Commentary by Terry Anker The Kentucky Derby is a horse race. The Indianapolis 500 is an auto race. The Super Bowl is a football game. While each of these is a true statement, it would be a gross mischaracterization to consider them to have been complete in their assessments of the various events. Individually, they have become their own spectaculars.

They are enormous economic engines – driving everything from local hotel room revenue to, at nearby homes, lawn parking opportunities. They bring scads of less- tangible bragging rights to the communities that welcome the proceedings. In some cases, almost non-stop media coverage delivers millions of dollars of attention to that city. We clean things up at home before we invite company in for a party.

Yet, as the frenzy reaches its zenith, have we lost track of the original objective? Or in adding half-time shows, hat-parades and snake-pit balls, are we simply expanding the

reach to include more members of our communities who might otherwise be uninspired by a sporting event? Some would argue the competing objectives incompatible – they grumble about gadflies who are only interested in celebrity sightings and wouldn’t know a carburetor from a filly. Maybe they have a point. But, can’t we allow for both perspectives to hold sway? Can’t we hope for the brackish water between the points of view that will help us find better understanding?

As we Hoosiers prepare to host the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, consider attending a new event. Consider participating in a different way. If cars don’t interest, – this year, learn one thing about the machines. And if snake pits sound unappealing, well, buy an anti-venom.

As the school year draws to a close, let us re-visit one last parenting skill that some of you still have yet to master, humor even though you’ve had 10, long months of practice. I’m speaking, obviously, of the carpool line. Please take note. My already fragile sanity can’t withstand any more parking-lot shenanigans.

1. Recognize that there is a carpool line.

Every time, for every event. If you don’t see it immediately upon arrival, that’s because you are the first, and as such, will be despised by everyone else. Find the pick-up zone, pull through and turn off the engine! Your gas-guzzling Suburban poisons my kid’s air when you idle for 20 minutes.

2. For the normal parent who arrives within a reasonable window of time, simply go to the end of the line. Avoid blocking parked cars, entrances and exits, and oncoming traffic. (I’ve actually seen this happen.) Occasionally you’ll be required to execute a U-turn to join in; please do so with competence.

3. Pay attention! These things can move like lightening once kids emerge. You need to be ready to pull forward at a moment’s notice. If you’re texting your bestie about brunch and miss your cue, I will honk at you.

4. Have your doors unlocked and preferably open so as to expedite loading.

Instruct your passengers to dive in as soon as you slow down. Speed is important at this juncture; there’s no time for stowing backpacks or stopping. Rock and roll, people!

5. Don’t start a conversation with another adult out your window! I sat behind someone the other day for two minutes while she yakked it up (and her offspring struggled to get the trunk open. See No. 4). My welltrained daughter was standing by at the ready, but Social Butterfly was blocking our exit.

Carpool lines are a necessary evil, but they don’t have to be a nightmare. Just follow the rules! Peace out.

“We’re excited for the opporturace nity because we’re trying to promote healthy lifestyles in the community,” said Pat Fox, who is retiring as Riverview Health president and CEO at the end of May. To top that off, Fox is a runner herself and plans to Fox compete in the third annual Noblesville Mini Marathon, which is set to begin at 7:30 a.m. May 28. Fox ran in the 10K last year and plans to run in the mini marathon (13.1 miles) this year. The event also includes a 5K race and Kiddie Run. “I think there were 900 participants, so it’s something we want to get behind and see if we can get a larger group,” Fox said. “I think it’s important at a young age to develop healthy habits. Walking is a good way, too.”

Fox, 62, has taken part in more than 30 half-marathons and has run in the Boston Marathon.

“I run five or six days a week,” Fox said.

“This event is for persons of all capabilities,” Noblesville Mini Marathon Director Scott Cranfill said. “We have a lot of people walk the 5K, 10K, even the half-marathon.”

With directorship of “Miss Gulch Returns,” “Holy Ficus,” “The Great Bike Race” and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” theater on his résumé, it’s no surprise director Zack Neiditch is taking on “Bat Boy: The Musical,” running through May 21 at Theatre on the Square.

“I love this musical,” Neiditch said. “It’s wellmade and fast and funny, and I love its sense humor. So much of my own work tends to be stuff that; on the surface, it can seem a little silly or campy, but once you crack into it, you see something more to it.”

In the musical’s book, written by Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming in 1997, Bat Boy (played by Justin Klein) is discovered in a cave and taken to the town veterinarian, Dr. Parker (Dave Ruark). He eventually is accepted as a member of the Parker family and taught to act like a “normal” boy by the vet’s wife, Meredith (Mindy Morton), and teenage daughter, Shelley (Devan Mathias). Shelley and Bat Boy fall in love, run away together and have a blissful coupling in the woods. But their happiness is shattered when Meredith arrives and reveals a secret that – spoiler alert – she’s Bat Boy’s mother.

“I think people accept this show because it’s so funny,” Neiditch said. “What gets people into the theater is, like, ‘Really? A musical about Bat Boy? Okay, let’s try it.’ And then once they’re in for the ride, they’re smacked with catchy song after song and then left with an actual emotional journey at the end.”

The musical originally was written for a cast of 10 people to play all 22 roles. During its first run at TOTS, the traditional casting is followed, with the four Parkers and the other six actors managing everything else.

“So, the men wear dresses and the ladies don beards, and there’s just nothing better,” Nieditch said.

Beef rack of ribs

Ingredients: Salt (to taste), 1 tablespoon black pepper (to taste), 1 tablespoon seasoned garlic salt (to taste), 1 teaspoon Cayenne pepper (optional), 1 to 2 racks of beef ribs (number of racks based on number of people), 1 tablespoon yellow mustard, 1/3 cup brown sugar, one bottle of favorite barbeque sauce.

Directions: The night before serving, prepare rub for beef ribs (salt, pepper, seasoned garlic salt and optional cayenne pepper). Sprinkle both sides of ribs, and then rub vigorously.

Wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight.

In the morning, place on medium temperature grill, and spread yellow mustard and brown sugar on each side of the ribs. Grill

for 5 to 8 minutes until each side is slightly browned and caramelized.

Remove ribs from grill and slice with sharp knife. Place individual ribs in a crockpot on low. Add one bottle of your favorite barbeque sauce. Let simmer 6 to 8 hours.
