City announces BorgWarner Technical Center for 2018 opening news@currentnoblesville.com The City of Noblesville announced May 3 that it has been selected by BorgWarner as the site of a new technidevelopment cal center.

The facility will be built at the southeast corner of 141st Street and Olio Road, along the I-69 corridor, pending the approval of a development agreement that will come before the Noblesville Common Council at 7 p.m. tonight, May 9. The facility will focus primarily on propulsion system solutions for combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles.

BorgWarner is famous for its creation of the Indianapolis 500 trophy. Made in 1935, the trophy is still given today to winners of the race.

“We are excited to soon welcome BorgWarner to our community, bringing more than 300 high-wage jobs to the Noblesville Corporate Campus area, with plans for more growth in the years to come,” Mayor John Ditslear said.

“Many Hoosiers know the BorgWarner name given their affiliation with the Indianapolis 500, but we appreciate even more so their proven track record as a market leader in clean, energy-efficient propulsion systems for the automotive industry.”

BorgWarner, based in Auburn Hills, Mich., will consolidate its Central Indiana operations that are currently performed in two separate facilities by combining research and develop-

ment, testing, prototype building, engineering and design work.

As part of the agreement with the City of Noblesville, BorgWarner will begin construction on the $15 million, 100,000-square-foot, two-story building in June for an expected opening in 2018.

The company plans to purchase $13 million in new personal property, such as machinery and lab equipment, to be installed within five years.

If approved, BorgWarner will receive up to $3.8 million toward its costs of the approximately $28 million investment for land acquisition, construction and equipment costs to be incurred by the company. In addition, the city will reimburse the company for $309,000 in road and sewer impact fees.

To serve the project, the city will make improvements to 141st Street, build a private road south from 141st, extend sanitary sewer and storm water improvements and construct a detention pond. The city will be issuing a bond to fund these costs. And then the additional real and personal property taxes generated from the project will substantially fund all of the payments to repay the bond.

Façade grant program available for historic home owners — The Noblesville Preservation Alliance is offering its façade grants program again this year.

Since 2011, NPA has awarded 29 grants worth $23,000 to local homeowners to help offset the costs of fixing up the exteriors of their homes. To qualify, your home must be more than 50 years old, and your proposed renovations must meet certain standards. The program has helped dozens of families stretch their renovation budgets. The application deadline is May 15. A committee will review all applications and grants will be awarded by mid-June. Work must be completed by the end of the year. Federal Hill grand opening rescheduled for May 13

A stormy forecast caused city officials to postpone the grand opening of Federal Hill Commons to May 13. The park was originally scheduled to hold its grand parks opening April 29.

“The forecast of wet weather conditions created a high possibility that the kids’ activity area and fireworks would be canceled and the grass lawn would be torn apart at our first event,” Mayor John Ditslear said.

Noblesville will open the 6.5-acre urban park with a free celebration and concert featuring the Wright Brothers from 6 to 10 p.m. May 13.

Music program hits high notes

Noblesville High School will wind up the music department’s school year with a traditional Mayfest concert featuring more than 600 choir, orchestra schools and band students.

The concert is set for 6:30 p.m. May 11 in the gymnasium. The school will have more to celebrate than usual with several successful finishes across the program.

“We had four qualify for the All-State concert band, and we’ve never had that before,” said Eric Thornbury, the school’s music department chairman and director of bands. “It was really exciting to have that many students playing at the highest level.”

The school’s color guard moved into a state class that had semifinals and finals March 18.

“There were 64 color guards that competed, and we ended up seventh (in the Regional A),” Thornbury said. “Then our jazz band, for the first time, made the Indiana State School Music Association state finals, and it got the outstanding rhythm section in the state (March 17).”

The NHS Singers, the mixed show choir, placed fifth in state for mixed large group in the ISSMSA finals. New Dimension, the girls choir, also was fifth for women’s large group in the ISSMA state finals.

The winter percussion group was promoted to the next class, Scholastic A.

“Then we qualified for the Scholastic A state finals in the Indiana Percussion Association and placed ninth on April 1,” Thornbury said. “So this was a benchmark winter for all of our groups.”

Alice Kussow, oboe, and Evan Foley, tuba, were named to the All-State Honor Band.

Kussow also was named as an Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Side -by-Side participant. Picked for the All State Band were Oliver Krefta, clarinet, and Umut Bicem, piccolo. Evan Foley, trombone, was an All-State Jazz selection.

Indiana Music Educators Association Honor Band selections are Kussow, oboe, Krefta, clarinet, Ally James, trumpet, and Charlie Hartman, horn.

Zach Brumfield earned an All-State Percussion honor. Freshmen named to the Junior All-State were Grace Wiles, trombone, Kelly Reagin, guitar, Mark Miller, bass, and Aiden Board, drum set. Freshman Anna Pockrass, baritone saxophone, was named to the Junior All-State Band.

USPS to collect food this week editorial@youarecurrent.com On May 13, the National Association of Letter Carriers and the United States Postal Service and philanthropy other partners are asking residents to help Stamp Out Hunger. The annual postal food drive has grown into a national effort that provides assistance to the millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table.

According to Local NALC Branch 888 President Ronnie Roush, the need for food donations is great. Currently, 49 million Americans – 1 in 6 – are unsure where their next meal is coming from. Thirteen million are children who feel hunger’s impact on their overall health and ability to perform in school. More than 5 million seniors over age 60 are food insecure, with many who live on fixed incomes.

Roush stated that food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. By springtime, many pantries are depleted, entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs

With the help of communities across the country, letter carriers and the U.S. Postal Service have collected more than 1.5 billion pounds of food in the United States during the first 24 years of this national food drive.

“We’re proud of this food drive and the immediate help it brings to our local food pantries. We’re asking residents for their support to help make this another successful food drive. It’s easy to make a donation; simply leave a bag of non-perishable food items by your mailbox on May 13 to help your neighbors in need,” Roush stated.

To participate in the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive, residents are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing nonperishable food items, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery May 13. Letter carriers will collect these food donations as they deliver mail and then take them to local food pantries.

“One hundred percent of the food collected in each community will be donated to a local food pantry. All donations stay in the local area,” Roush stated.

Chamber promotes youth jobs

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Noblesville Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Becky Terry figures it’s only logical for the youth development agency to provide some entry-level employment jobs for teenagers.

“We also are providing the soft skills that are needed for kids to be successful when they do show up for their first day on the job,” Terry said. “We are trying to train them what it takes to be successful in the workplace.”

Terry was part of a panel that spoke on Youth Employment Benefits All at the Noblesville Chamber of Commerce membership luncheon April 26 at Habour Trees Golf and Beach Club. Chamber President/CEO Bob DuBois said the chamber’s goal is to encourage Noblesville businesses to provide teenagers 200 first-time jobs by Aug. 1.

Mike Myers, the state’s director of Child Labor and Wage and Hour divisions, spoke on businesses’ compliance in following the child labor laws.

“We work with our teenagers on how to fill out applications and how to create resumes,” Terry said. “We average about 35 part-time employees, depending on the

season, and a great bulk of them are between 14 and 18.”

Terry said transportation should be one issue addressed before hiring teenagers.

“Sometimes kids that are involved in extracurricular activities get overlooked because employers think they are too busy or they won’t have enough hours,” she said.

“I would encourage you to look at those students as well. It will teach them to balance their schedules and teach them they have to communicate their other commitments. Hiring youth is an investment into their futures.”

news@currentnoblesville.com There was no cause for alarm in Noblesville when a buried natural gas line was hit by accident – because it was safety all a planned safety exercise.

Noblesville first responders, gas utility employees and excavators participated in a mock line strike scenario last month at the Hamilton County 4-H Fairgrounds to show what happens when an underground gas line is hit accidentally.

The scenario focused on the need to call Indiana811 prior to digging, in order to get underground utilities located and flagged.

The program was done by Enertech, Indiana811 and the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.

Indiana811 said while it’s the law for excavators digging 12 inches deep or more to call 811, homeowners who are doing something as mundane as planting a tree or putting in a fence or mailbox should also call the free service.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POPULATION AND CRASHES Through the Indiana State Crash Database, the City of Noblesville Engineering Dept. maintains a database of all crashes that occurred in Noblesville dating to 2003.

The compilation of annual crash and population data indicates a strong correlation between the size of population and the number of crashes occurring in the city.

Historically, Noblesville experiences an average annual increase of approximately 50 crashes per every 1,750 new residents. The annual percentage of crashes occurring per capita has been consistently steady at 3 percent for the past 14 years. Crashes in Noblesville are heavily correlated to both population data and national driving trends.

Noblesville’s Geoff Davis gaining national attention for woodcarvings

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com Local artist Geoff Davis has experience making many different things, from furniture to ukuleles to cover story boats and smaller art pieces.

For about a decade, Davis has worked to create a series of wood-carved birds, “50 Little Birds,” born out of his Pennsylvania Dutch heritage.

“I’ve been doing woodworking all my life.

My parents had a shop, and my grandparents both had shops, and I always had access to tools,” Davis said. “They were using them, so I used them. It’s just something I knew. I never had to learn it. I’ve studied it and taken it a lot further than they ever have.”

In the past year, he’s been working to create something new – a series of woodcarved pull toys.

“What I do now came out of the birds, which began eight to 10 years ago,” Davis said. “I was building ukuleles before that.

I went to Hawaii to study ukulele-building, and I studied furniture-building before that.

So, I had been carving the birds, and I’ve just always been inclined to try other things.”

Early last fall, Davis began working with larger pieces of wood, which resulted in larger finished pieces.

“I got out a sketchbook and was just drawing, and the exercise I gave myself one night was the alphabet,” Davis said. “When I got to the letter E, I drew an elephant and made it into a pull toy. So a mixture of that and the size of the wood is where the pull toys came from.”

With his unique style, Davis’ works have an old-fashioned feel, something that isn’t lost on him.

“I have self-imposed rules that my style (was) unearthed from,” Davis said. “I really liked the birds I was carving, and somewhere along the line, I sat down and asked myself why I liked them so much. It had to do with color, texture and the materials.

Commentary by Terry Anker The rise of the machines has been a theme of science fiction writers since the beginning of the genre. We invest in our mechanical devices, hoping that they will someday come to serve our every need, all the while failing to notice our own growing dependency. With comfort comes complacency. And with complacency comes our subjection to the very devices we create to serve us.

Yet with each new generation of innovation, we humans have found sufficient ways to stay on top of the food chain. We have mastered pony cars just as we had mastered ponies centuries before. Our obsession with dominating them – all with the intention of capturing their practical use – ultimately leads to a relationship of a more symbiotic nature. We protect and care for them even as they protect and care for us.

Now, technology moves with ever-increasing velocity. Our capacity to learn and develop dominion over it is strained. With generations of smartphones replacing the old before we have figured out a modicum of their features, we are continually left to feel as if the technology has finally outpaced our ability – that we are the inferior.

We revert to previous known methods to gain footing.

There was a time, not that long ago, that automobiles were mechanical devices. If one failed to start, some human would tinker a bit with hand tools and experience to restore its life. Today, a wire is attached to the car’s brain to ask it what might be wrong. What if failure or impact has rendered it with a car-cussion so that it forgets its mission to serve us? Well, we could walk. And would we have a choice?

REA D ER ’ S V I E W Save the Nickel Plate Railway Editor, As I lay in the hospital this past month, I read many articles about plans to destroy the Nickel Plate Railway. How could you? Why must Noblesville keep up with the others? Carmel has everything, so we must catch up. Westfield will have a fieldhouse, so Noblesville must have one.

We find millions for that. Why didn’t we, as part owner of the Nickel Plate, use some of our money to repair this track?

I remember how the Nickel Plate helped Noblesville grow. I remember when Mr. Clark hauled freight from the railway stations to all different kinds of merchants as Noblesville grew. I remember seeing a half-dozen little boys watching a train go by, waving at the train’s men, counting boxcars full of various things. Some say, “Put the past behind you, and look to the future.” Without the past, there would be no future.

I rode the train to the fair, and the little kids were so happy and excited, and they saw things along the way they had not

seen before. This was education. Grandparents were taking grandkids to the fair, and they were as happy as the kids.

Have you talked to any of these people?

Many people and kids enjoyed the Polar Express also and looked forward to that.

I see Noblesville will break ground on the first phase of the Midland Trace Trail.

Now we want to build another trail. Build the trail, but keep the train. We can have both.

I have lived most of my 96 years in Noblesville and have seen Noblesville grow from a little town to the city we now have. Yes, I am an old woman, but I experienced a lot and learned a lot of things before some of you were born. I do know you should listen to the people who voted you into office. We have the train, something no one else has. Why destroy that for something everyone else has?

Keep the train, and build the trail.

I won’t lie. I’m extremely nervous right now. My husband Doo made me sign up for a stupid triathlon, and while humor it seemed like a great idea back in January, with the race just hours away, I feel like my bowels are in full revolt. And the weird thing is, this is not my first one. Nor my second. So why is my adrenaline kicking in like I woke up to a zombie apocalypse?

For sure, some of the nerves can be attributed to my competitive nature. I told Doo several years ago that he will never beat me because, unlike him, I am willing to die before I lose to someone I shouldn’t. I’m not kidding. I call it “athletic brinkmanship,” and I am deeply committed to its tactics.

Blister? Ignore it. Dehydrated? Keep going.

Signs of heat stroke? Suck. It. Up. Triathlons in particular are as much a mental game as physical, and compared to moms, men simply can’t get close. Advantage, me. And my man only recently gave up smoking and became a “runner,” which means unless I am struck down with a stomach bug, he’s not going to finish ahead of me (actually, that happened once and I still beat him!).

But he’s been training hard, ran a marathon in the fall and is a much better biker than me. I hate to admit it, but I think he has a chance today. And I don’t really want to die, especially not in a swim suit/bike short hybrid. So now the question is, if Doo can do it today, can I rise above my arrogance and smack talk and truly be happy for all that he’s accomplished? Can I be the gracious good loser and celebrate his success? I like to think I can, but I’m not entirely positive.

And that has me worried. Much more than running this stupid triathlon.

Ugh. I need a toilet. Peace out.

Kanagroo-a-thon will return for its second year in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health North Hospital awareness in Carmel.

Kangaroo care is a method that involves skin-to-skin contact. Parents hold their child, clothed only in a diaper, against their bare chest with a small blanket covering the child’s back. Kangaroo-a-thon encourages this method by tallying how long families can hold their baby over a two-week period.

The goal is to promote awareness of the benefits of skin-to-skin contact and start making those benefits a reality for families in the NICU. Lynn Jenkins, RN, a nurse in the NICU and co-chair of Kangaroo-a-thon, brought the event to the hospital two years ago after hearing about it at an international conference in Florida.

ing babies skin-to-skin because of all the positive benefits for the families and the baby,” Jenkins said.

Skin-to-skin contact reduces parental stress, increases parent and infant bonding, decreases postpartum depression, improves a child’s sleep cycle which stimulates brain development, increases a child’s weight gain and much more.

Last year, the hospital tallied 544 hours of skin-to-skin contact between parents or grandparents.

This year’s goal is to reach an average of 3.5 hours per day and to find one family who can hold their baby for 24 hours straight.

The contest will last until May 15.

Sun King Brewery to celebrate eighth anniversary — On June 24, Sun King Brewery will celebrate its eighth anniversary. Where’s Amy stopped by the VIP Reception for the Deborah J. Simon Spotlight - Art for an #HIVFreeGeneration at Clowes Hall. Guests included David Hochoy, Jordan Anderson, Alyona Yakovleva-Randall, Wilmara Manuel, Frank and Katrina Basile, Peter Slaymaker, Alpha Blackburn, Jason Grisell, Kathy Campbell, Jamie Gibbs and Paco Argiz. The annual event is known for it’s onenight-only, performing arts extravaganza performed by local arts organizations and friends of the arts. All proceeds from the show benefitted Indiana AIDS Fund, a fundraising program of the Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis. The night was filled with dancing, laughter and love. Every performance had a purpose and meaning, and I was particularly taken aback by Dance Kaleidoscope’s beautiful performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” It was a magical night where everyone came together for an important cause that celebrated life through eyes of the arts. Commentary by Amy Pauszek Artistic Director for the Center for the Performing Arts and founder of the Great American Songbook Foundation Michael Feinstein stopped by to open Actors Theatre of Indiana’s production of “Beyond the Rainbow.” What a treat it was for the cast, crew and guests to have him stop by and give kudos for the hottest ticket in town directed by ATI’s own Don Farrell. The multitalented cast includes three actresses who play various stages of Judy Garland, along with the people who were part of her journey and path to stardom. ATI favorite Katy Gentry, who originated the role of Judy in ATI’s 2007 premiere, 2010 Songbook Ambassador superstar Annie Yokom and the sen-

sational young actress Anjali Rooney came alive with their brilliant acting, singing and mannerisms of the late Garland. Roger Ortman, Dave Ruark and Grace Sell also play multiple roles in the show, so it’s fun to see them shine. Everything about this show is spectacular. The songs, the glitz and story make this production a must-see. Warning: If you happen to spot Where’s Amy singing and skipping around town belting out the hits and songs of Judy Garland, don’t blame me, blame ATI for bringing back the iconic Judy Garland. Blueprint for Improvement: two-story master suite addition Commentary by Larry Greene

The goal was to design a two-story addition with a master suite on the main level and a large craft room below.

1. The 360-degree proportions and materials of the home were studied to ensure the new addition looked original to the home.

2. The new master suite connected through the existing library, giving an extra layer of privacy.

This retreat included a large bedroom, walk-in closet and wheelchair-accessible bathroom.

3. Master bath amenities included a roll-in shower and a double-sink vanity with lower convenience outlets.

4. Carefully selected finishes reflect the warm color palette of the rest of the home, with stained trimwork, stone textures in the tile and hardwood flooring.

5. A fun, highly functional craft room was designed in the lower part of the addition and connected to the existing basement.

Before Background Info: These owners needed a design solution to age in place in their 1990s home in the Claybridge neighborhood of Carmel.

Before problems: Although they cherished their existing home and neighborhood, these owners were faced with the tough decision to move or make their home work for aging in place.

Thinking long-term, their decision led them to a design for their home that created a much-needed master suite on the main level to avoid the many stairs that provided access to all of the original bedrooms.

Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan is best known for having built the Taj Mahal to honor his wife. The nearby travel Agra Fort shows that she was not his only source of companionship.

In 1628, Shah Jahan became the fifth Mughal Emperor, controlling much of the Indian subcontinent from his capital in Agra.

Soon after assuming the throne, Shah Jahan renovated a walled fort that had been built by his grandfather, Akbar the Great, on a 100-acre site along the west bank of the Yamuna River. Shah Jahan replaced many of the red sandstone structures with more ornate ones made of white marble. He built the lavish Khas Mahal to serve as his sleeping chamber. A short walk from the Khas Mahal he built a jeweled octagonal tower named Musamman Burj as the residence for Mumtaz, the second of his three wives.

The Khas Mahal opened onto a large foursection garden flanked on three sides by a two-story dormitory that served as Shah

Jahan’s harem, where female employees and relatives and the emperor’s concubines were housed. Estimates of the number of women in Shah Jahan’s harem range from 200 to several thousand, guarded by eunuchs and managed by the emperor’s mother. Members of the harem were expected not only to provide sexual favors to Shah Jahan on demand, but to sing and dance for his pleasure. Shah Jahan also reportedly used members of his harem as pawns on a huge Parcheesi board constructed near his chamber, where he moved the pieces while sitting under a canopy.

Despite the many women in his harem, Shah Jahan was devoted to Mumtaz. When she died during the birth of her 14th child in 19 years, he built the Taj Mahal as her tomb, located along the Yamuna River and visible from a room in the Musamman Burj.

Description: Prevail, Inc. provides crisis intervention and restorative support services for adult, adolescent and child survivors of crime and abuse to residents of Hamilton and surrounding counties. Prevail is seeking a full-time Protective Order Advocate responsible for assessing and assisting clients with completing protective orders. Also responsible for completing intake paperwork, completing safety plans, referring clients to ongoing services within the agency and completing 24 hour crisis line shifts.

Duties: Assessing and assisting clients with completing protective orders.

Working in conjunction with staff to provide intervention and follow-up services to clients as needed, which may include (but are not limited to): intake assessment, community referrals and resources, court advocacy, completing safety and action plans, and inter/intra-agency networking and advocacy on behalf of the victim.

Serving as a reference guide for the community in the areas of victim resources and violence prevention, by direct referrals for clients, and through public presentations and participation in community organizations.

Completing 24-hour on-call crisis line shifts and providing backup service to the child advocacy centers as scheduled and approved by the Adult Advocacy Supervisor.

Collaborating with Prevail staff, other agencies, groups, organizations, and individuals to identify and develop prevention/intervention services for victims of crime and other populations within the community.

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field; or a combination of experience, education and/or training.
