Candidates talk district, citywide priorities

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com In preparation for the May 7 primary election, the Noblesville Chamber of Commerce continued its efforts to eduPOLITICS cate the public on candidates’ views at its April 24 luncheon.

Speaking to the business community, most candidates in the Noblesville municipal election took part in the event that drew approximately 125 people to Purgatory Golf Club.

Much of the time was given to those seeking a seat on the Noblesville Common Council.

Candidates were asked only two questions: What is the first priority you have for your district, and what is the next priority you have for the whole of Noblesville?

Here’s how each candidate responded: District 1 Terry Busby (R): “My No. 1 priority would be funding community services. I’ve always been an advocate of fire and police. The other thing would be to check on the tax rates and funding liabilities of the community. For the total community of Noblesville, it would be to check on (economic development) resolutions to companies coming to Noblesville.

Like, when a company says they’re going to employ 25 people, who checks on that? Who checks on whether they’re really doing what they say?”

Mike Davis (R): In District 1, I would make sure that people are taken care of. There are (always) concerns of safety – police, fire and roads – but that rolls into all of Noblesville.

So, being able to handle that, getting people where they want to go, supporting the infrastructure we have, making sure the roads can handle everything that is needed, and making sure people are connected through trails.

Mark Hall (R): “(There is) $274 million dollars in debt and lease obligation. That translates to $4,500 for every man, woman and child of the 62,000 people in Noblesville. (District 1 constituents) want to make sure they’re putting someone in place to mind the store, a fiscally conservative, responsible person who will say yes when yes needs to be said and no when it doesn’t.”

District 2 Pete Schwartz (R): “Traffic is a big issue in my district. If you’ve ever driven on (Ind.) 38 heading west out of town in the evening, you know what I’m talking about. For the most part, people are generally happy. I’d like to get some more trails, get traffic taken care of, and I’m a big (proponent) of public safety (initiatives) as a former reserve police officer and volunteer firefighter, but the biggest concern, I think, is development. There are a lot of empty fields in my district, so I’d like to see

some development there.”

Mark Skipper (R): “People are very unhappy with (Ind.) 32 and 38. Almost on a daily basis while I’m at work, I see emergency vehicles going up and down (Ind.) 32, and I’m fearful something bad will happen, injury or worse …

On the city side, I’m a small business owner and we talk about shopping small one time a year. I think shopping small businesses should be a (regular) focus. Small businesses should be given a lot more in terms of communication and marketing.”

District 3 Brenda Cook (R): “For District 3, my main goal is that affordable, single-family housing needs to be maintained and encouraged.

Within our district, we have the highest number of single-family homes under about $158,000. We need to preserve those homes.

We need to help citizens stay in them if they can. Infrastructure is a huge issue. We have brick streets and brick sidewalks. We need to keep those and maintain those.”

Aaron Smith (R): “The biggest issue that I think faces District 3 is (the former) Firestone (plant). It’s not a problem, it’s an opportunity.

Most of the residents I’ve talked to want to be a part of the conversation. With the city as a whole, I definitely think that (Ind.) 37, as we are partnering with other cities in the region to build that up, it’s important that we communicate what that’s going to mean for traffic, not only in the short term but also in the long term.”

Rick Taylor (R): “In District 3, (improved) infrastructure is a must. We’ve worked on it in the last eight years but we haven’t done enough, and we can do better in Old Town. With Firestone, I agree with Aaron (Smith), that’s an eyesore, and it’s been an eyesore. We’re working on that, but it’s a slow process. As far as the rest of the city is

concerned, infrastructure has got to be No. 1. We’ve got to be able to move traffic. If we want people to visit our downtown and keep it vibrant, we have to do something about traffic. In 2018, the city put out a 10-point capital improvement plan, and moving forward, I would like to get that completed.”

District 5 Jason Myers (D): “For District 5, what I hear when I go to people’s houses, some of the biggest issues are lower income housing.

A lot of people are really concerned about being priced out of their home. We need to make sure we’re protecting those lower income houses and keeping our tax rates low.

As far as the whole city goes, what I hear over and over and over again is, ‘We don’t want to be Fishers or Carmel.’ We can expand responsibly. What if we put rules into place that would require any new businesses built downtown to match façades and architecture of what we already have? What if we limited the building heights so we were able to keep that small-downtown feel? What if we were able to support our small businesses the same way we’ve been supporting our large corporations with huge tax abatements?

(These things could) be huge in protecting the charm and value that we love so much about Noblesville. *Editor’s note: Fellow Democratic District 5 candidate Gary Bartunek was not in attendance.

At-Large Brian Ayer (R): “I think the No. 1 thing we need to accomplish is solving the east/west traffic problem. Pleasant Street, by far, is my No. 1 priority. It’s a very promising project.”

Darren Peterson (R): “East/west connectivity and anything roads-related is the No. 1 priority. This is a great place to live. People are going to continue to come here… We need to stay out in front of that with smart, sustainable growth and infrastructure with east/west connectivity. Shortly behind that is north/south connectivity and also then connecting the trails. We have almost 100 miles of trails, and we need to get those connected so we can get from here to there and even bypass the cars.”

Rocky Shanehsaz (R): Economic development is my top priority. If you don’t have money, you cannot do any of the work that has been proposed … we have to be able to increase our tax base, make money so that we can invest money in infrastructure *Editor’s note: Republican at-large candidate Mark Boice was not in attendance due to a prior out-of-town work commitment. Council OKs funds transfer Compiled by Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com The Noblesville Common Council met for a regular meeting April 23 at City Hall. Councilor Mark Boice was absent. The council will meet again at 7 p.m. May 14 in the City Hall council chambers (second floor), 16 S. 10th St. For more, visit cityofnoblesville.org.

What happened: Councilor Rick Taylor gave an update from the Noblesville Tree Board.

What it means: Taylor said drivers on Hazel Dell Road should notice new foliage after the board approved the planting of 129 trees along a 2-mile stretch south of Ind. 32 to Noble Crossing Elementary.

“This was a partnership with the Noblesville Street Dept. The tree board budget is $100,000 a year for tree plantings, and this was a big project for this year,” Taylor said.

“There are three different species – black gum, Norway spruce and celebration maple. Each tree was planted 40 feet apart from the next so they have plenty of room to grow.”

What happened: Council President Brian Ayer recognized City Clerk Evelyn Lees.

What it means: Lees recently earned the status of Certified Municipal Clerk, awarded by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.

“She had to complete several classes and different events in order to obtain that, and I want to congratulate her on that,” Ayer said.

What happened: Councilors unanimously approved a transfer of funds for the purchase of planters in the city’s downtown district.

What it means: Noblesville’s Downtown District Committee requested that $65,000 of its $500,000 annual budget be transferred to the Noblesville Street Dept. for the purchase of new sidewalk planters, to be placed in the downtown district. The money will be transferred from the committee to the street department because the street department will manage the purchase and maintain the upkeep of the new planters.

Farmers market returns May 4

For the past quarter century, Noblesville Main Street has had one primary goal with its seasonal farmers market – SUMMER to provide local produce and goods to the community.

Now in its 27th year, the farmers market will return May 4 to Federal Hill Commons for 24 consecutive Saturdays, ending Oct. 12, from 8 a.m. to noon.

“The farmers market is one of my favorite seasons,” said Lorna Steele, executive director of Noblesville Main Street. “I just love watching all the people interact, the kids playing and all the puppy dogs. It’s a great place for the community to come together.

We also have a lot of new vendors this year, which I am really excited about. ” In an effort to relieve some of the parking issues of past years, there will be a trolley service provided by Premier Trolley Co., a local family owned business. Guests can ride the trolley from Federal Hill Commons to the downtown square and back for $2.

Children age 3 and younger are free. Trolley routes and stops can be found at noblesvillemainstreet.org.

HSHC fundraiser returns

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com Anyone who has attended the Humane Society for Hamilton County’s Wine, Wags & Whiskers event knows it isn’t a EVENT traditional fundraiser.

Now in its 11th year, organizers are moving the May 11 event to Noblesville’s new Embassy Suites conference center for more space.

Also new this year is a slight change of how the evening will run – with all winetasting festivities in the same room – but all the hits from past years can be expected, including hors d’oeuvres, sweet treats from Taylor’s Bakery, a silent auction with more than 100 items, jewelry from Hupp Jewelers and adoptable animals. For musical entertainment, the HSHC will welcome jazz harpist Jan Aldridge-Clark.

The event raises awareness for HSHC’s Survivor Program, in addition to the shelter’s daily operation. The Survivor Program annually funds lifesaving medical care for thousands of animals.

Low Back Pain Treatment Options

The intersection of Greenfield Avenue CONSTRUCTION and Howe Road is closed to all traffic while crews build a roundabout.

The closure began April 22 and is expected to last seven weeks. During the closure, drivers should utilize a detour via Promise Road, 146th Street and Cumberland Road.

Work is ongoing on the Logan Street Pedestrian Bridge Project in downtown Noblesville. The northbound lane of Ind. 19 between Ind. 32 and Logan Street will be closed the duration of the project, through September. The detour consists of taking Ind. 32 westward, turning northbound onto Ind. 38, then eastbound on Logan Street and northbound on Ind. 19 to avoid the closure. On Logan Street, the designated westbound right turn lane on the bridge will become a combined straight and rightturn lane. The eastbound straight lane will be shifted north, and the south side of the bridge will be under construction. The Riverwalk near this area also is closed.

Janus Developmental Services celebrates four decades of service in Hamilton County and beyond

Established April 4, 1979 as Janus COVER STORY Developmental Services, Inc., the organization has long been a resource for families looking to improve quality of life for family members with developmental disabilities.

“Essentially, Janus was started by parents that lived in Tipton County and Hamilton County,” said Chris Sorensen, president and CEO of Janus Developmental Services.

Sorenson “At that time, historically, most people with disabilities would be sent to institutions, but these parents didn’t want that for their kids. They wanted some place for their kids to go so that they could do something meaningful. Actually, if you go around the state, there are agencies like Janus providing similar types of services, and almost all of those were started by parents as an alternative. We’ve gone through the years providing various types of services and programs.”

PROVIDING OPPORTUNITY

Sorensen said a major part of Janus’ mission is aimed at providing career opportunities to clients. The organization has long been known for its sheltered workshop program, where clients work on-site at Janus’ Ind. 32 facility for companies to earn a wage. For example, Carmel-based candle company Linnea’s Lights has all of its jars assembled with candlewicks at the Noblesville workshop.

“We find that the clients who participate in the workshop and their families are really happy because they have a chance to earn income,” Sorensen said. “There are some other options, too, for earning income within Janus. We have the (Capabilities Café) that’s over at the courthouse, and then we also have our monthly community luncheons.

Our clients who participate in the food services programs get to practice those skills there. Then, we also have our hidden talents program, where they also make birdhouses out of gourds and some of the wood paintings. Those are all paid employment opportunities.”

she said. “There was the feeling that (a reading program) wouldn’t be a good choice, and nobody understood why it was in their plans.”

That assumption changed in 2018 when Janus employees visited another organization with a literacy program.

“We just wanted to see what it was like and what it involved,” Sorensen said. “They were having great success with it, and they showed us that they had this reading software program that would allow them to customize books for each of the people that were participating.”

For example, if one client is at a third-grade reading level, but another client is at a fifth-grade reading level, the two can enjoy the same story but have books specifically tailored to their reading level.

“That way, they can all share, but then every time they’re looking at a different subject, you can print out different books and see whether they’re progressing because they’re not memorizing a book because we’re not using the same books,” Sorensen said.

Painting birdhouse gourds, part of Janus’ Hidden Talents program, has become a staple of some of the work done by the organization’s clients.

Janus also pursues employment opportunities for its clients in surrounding communities, working one-on-one with individuals to find jobs.

In addition, Janus’ Doorways Program lets clients pursue their personal interests, such as fitness, cooking, gardening, community services and community outings.

“The real benefit of being able to do outings is that so many of the people we serve don’t have many everyday opportunities, like going out to eat and ordering whatever they want, for example,” Sorensen said. “But with our outings, they get that chance.”

A NEW LITERACY PROGRAM

Last year, Janus started a literacy program at its facility, something Sorensen said has changed her perception on the depth of the Janus programming.

“I was told when I first started here that almost everybody has in their plan (that they want to) learn to read, but then I was told that it just seemed silly because if everybody’s gone through the school system and they haven’t learned to read by this point in time, they never will,”

“Over the past five years, we’ve been averaging a growth rate of people that we’re serving at our facility by 10 percent every year,” Sorensen said.

Janus provides services to 137 individuals on-site at its facility on Ind. 32. Janus also provides assistance in the community in one-on-one services, including community employment, respite and personal assistance and care to 70 individuals. Sorensen said there is a waitlist of 44 individuals who want on-site services.

In September 2016, Janus announced the purchase of the 19.2-acre Noblesville Golf & Batting Center, 17400 Willowview Rd., adjacent to the 11-acre Janus facility.

“Just knowing our growth rate, we want to build,” Sorensen said. “(Our current) building was not built for the services that we provide. While we’ve adapted it, it wouldn’t be someone’s fantasy building for what we do. We’ve been doing a lot of research and we’ve visited other facilities so we can get an idea of what we would like for ourselves.

We’ve been talking to parents, too. We want to make sure that when we’re actually ready to start the building that we’re able to accommodate not only our current needs but future needs, too. We want to be sure that whatever we’re building will encompass present and future. We’re getting really close to finalizing everything we need, but also we’re exploring different opportunities for various partnerships with developing that property.”

The project’s scale, timeline and funding have not been finalized.

UPCOMING BREAKFAST On May 3, Janus Developmental Services will play host to its annual Create, Connect and Commit fundraising breakfast at 502 East Event Centre in Carmel.

Now in its 11th year, the breakfast is the organization’s largest annual fundraiser and supports the everyday services of Janus. All proceeds go directly to the organization.

Primary season

Protecting the good ol’ boys

Commentary by Terry Anker Spring brings longer, and happily, warmer days. The flowers push forth from winter’s slumber, stretching toward the sun. It is time to shake off the sleepy gray days and refresh for another season. But with many joys come requisite tasks. It is time to freshen the mulch, packed by snow. It is time to clean the gutters, clogged with the last remnant of autumn leaves. It is time to shed those extra pounds. It is time to become our summer selves.

To children, the changing season brings anticipation of release from the confines of required school hours. But that hopefulness is tempered by the looming reality of final exams. For older kids, thoughts turn to summer jobs and full wallets. To be sure, they must pass the nervous excitement of proms and graduation. Seasons change with painful bliss – the oxymoron of hopeful dread – reminding us of the duality of our nature. We must overcome those things we avoid to achieve those things we desire.

For we adult citizens, the spring carries the cries and conflicts of our election process. Candidates vie for our attention. Do we value experience and tenure or seek change? Mostly, are we tired of the bickering? Primary Election Day is May 7. It matters who will lead. And, it matters that democracy is only ruled by majority if we fulfill our duty to cast a ballot. Are we happy with the condition and direction of our community? Do we want change? The season is here and mustn’t be ignored. Maintenance is simple. Repair is costly. Please, take the time to vote. Absence makes no statement but disregard.

Fast on the heels of our latest raccoon debacle, I have another tale of animal antics to share. Enjoy!

I was the last one up a few HUMOR nights ago, which in and of itself was unusual. Doo was already in bed, and the kids were in their rooms. After I turned off the lights, I went to call our black lab Libby in. She was in the yard playing with a neighbor dog, Declan, also a black lab. I chatted with his owner for a bit, and then after getting Libby inside, headed upstairs.

While I was brushing my teeth, my youngest stormed into the bathroom: “Mom, someone’s been knocking on the door for 10 minutes. Didn’t you hear it?”

No, I had not, and because Doo has hearing loss and was deep into an audio book with ear buds, he had not, either.

So, I threw on some pants and went back

downstairs. Libby was jumping at the window, responding to Declan, who was peering in. My neighbor was on the front stoop.

“Hi. I’m sorry. Did you need something?” I asked.

“Yeah. You have our dog. This is Libby!”

Oops. I had accidently brought the wrong pet into the house, and the neighbor had realized just a hair too late. I do remember thinking to myself that it was weird that Declan also had a purple collar, but that was the extent of my observational awareness.

Doo and the kids say this epic fail is proof that I hate Libby, but I disagree. It was dark, they’re both black labs, and I’m not usually up that late.

Editor, Luke Kenley’s endorsement of Chris Jensen for Noblesville mayor should come as no surprise to anyone; the two are peas in a pod.

Former State Sen. Kenley represents the old establishment style of government, where insiders take care of each other and protect the good ol’ boy network.

Now is the time for Noblesville to be reminded to vote for leaders who understand that our government was created to be limited by the will of the people; that we are not its subjects, but it serves us.

The last thing we need in Noblesville is a continuation of the status quo — evidenced by our high taxes and low achievement — and a City Hall that is out of touch with residents and beholden to corporations and developers, all things which we, the people, do not want.

It is obvious that we need new ideas and new leadership. My concern that Chris Jensen looks like more of the same old thing for Noblesville has been confirmed by one of the good ol’ boy’s endorsement of him. The Kenley endorsement of Chris Jensen confirms for me that Noblesville will continue down the same path it’s on.

Noblesville needs to take note of this endorsement and consider its implications.

READER’S VIEW Rocky helps continue jail mentoring Editor, The Transitioning Opportunities for Work, Education and Reality Program is a mentoring project designed to help inmates find a job and return to a more stable environment upon their release from jail. Born out of a grant with the U.S. Dept. of Labor, Employment and Training, the TOWER Program started in 2016 and is facilitated within the Hamilton County Jail.

The goal of the grant was to help at least 200 inmates and reduce the jail’s recidivism rate. Funding for the TOWER Program would have ended in December 2018 with a total of 203 inmates helped. However, thanks to the efforts of former Judge Steve Nation and the generosity of local businessman Rocky Shanehsaz, the TOWER Program continues for another six months and possibly beyond.

Like other local businesses in Noblesville, Rocky partners with Hamilton County Community Corrections to employ former inmates as they transition from incarceration to real life, where they often need help finding a job, a place to live and transportation to substance abuse recovery programs and other health services.

In Rocky’s work with Judge Nation and his efforts to learn more about how a truly effective drug rehabilitation program could work, he began employing work-release offenders about five years ago, and he’s hired more than 60 so far. Rocky says his workrelease employees have proven to be very reliable and perform well in a system that requires accountability.

In December 2016, Rocky offered $50,000, or six months of funding, for the TOWER Program to continue.

With the first phase of the TOWER Program successfully completed, Rocky wants to use the foundation built by the TOWER Program to create a drug rehabilitation program that really works, right here in Hamilton County.

Rocky has a mind for business and a heart for giving. He likes to give people second chances and help them better their lives.

He’s very invested and cares a lot about the people in this community. I support Rocky Shanehsaz for a Noblesville Common Council at-large seat, and I ask you to join me.

Fertility through a different lens Commentary by Joelle Samples Each year, National Infertility Awareness Week (April 21-27) serves to unite the millions of Americans GUEST COLUMN who want to remove the stigmas and barriers that stand in the way of building families. This year, NIAW is on a mission to raise awareness about the significant lack of financial access that couples receive as they are dealing with fertility challenges and trying to build a family.

In my work as a holistic reproductive health and fertility coach, I serve as an advocate for these men and women. I serve as their “hub” for all things fertility. While a lack of insurance access is a huge problem for couples trying to conceive, I certainly don’t think it’s our only battle to fight.

When I think about the lack of access that couples receive as they are trying to conceive, I also can’t help but address the fact that conventional medicine often bypasses the root cause of the fertility challenges. Are we overlooking underlying health issues because we’re looking at the couple’s fertility challenges through such a narrow lens? If we broadened our lens and

realized that a couple’s fertility is an extension of their health, maybe insurance would start covering the cost of care.

In her book, “The Fifth Vital Sign,” I love what Lisa Hendrickson-Jack has to say about the female menstrual cycle: “Just like your heart rate, body temperature, respiratory rate, and blood pressure, our menstrual cycle is a central part of who we are. If our body isn’t functioning normally, neither will our monthly cycle. Our menstrual cycle is constantly relaying information back to us about our overall health and wellness.”

Fertility health is more than just hormone levels. We must look at the body as a whole, address diet and lifestyle factors that may be affecting overall health and wellness and come up with a plan to get to the root cause of the fertility challenges for the couple as a whole. Creating a team of like-minded practitioners that can help you to achieve this goal will give you a much higher chance of success.

Asner stars as Holocaust survivor in ‘The Soap Myth’ at Palladium

Asner earned five PERFORMANCE Emmy Awards for his 12-year run portraying the gruff but soft-hearted newsman in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” for seven years and “Lou Grant” for five years.

At 89, he is playing a memorable fictional character as Holocaust survivor Milton Saltzman in Jeff Cohen’s “The Soap Myth.” The Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis is sponsoring the dramatic reading of the play is set for 7:30 p.m. April 30 at the Palladium for the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

“I think it’s a very important role to play a survivor of the death camps, who is on a mission on informing the world about what he has witnessed, and the world doesn’t want to take the time to listen,” Asner said.

Saltzman is a witness to the Nazis’ atrocities, including their experimenting in using concentration camp corpses to make soap. A Holocaust denier tries to dispute that, and an investigative reporter tries to find the truth.

“Age-wise, I certainly can identify with the role and I’m familiar with the horrors of the Holocaust and I feel that no matter how hard you try to instill in people the knowledge of the Holocaust, that it will eventually fade into non-existence,” Asner said. “People will forget the lessons learned from the Holocaust. They will forget the succeeding holocausts (genocides) as they forgot the original one. And it will take place again, again and again.”

Asner said it’s important people know when it happens and why it happens.

“It’s presented most charmingly by Tovah Feldshuh. She does a great job presenting the anti-Semite cloaked in decency,” Asner said. “I can’t commend her or her talent enough.”

Dillon Park concert series set editorial@youarecurrent.com The Noblesville Parks and Recreation Dept. has released the 2019 Summer Concert Series lineup, which kicks off with Dave & Rae at 7 p.m. June 6 at Dillon Park, 6351 Midland Ln. The series also has a new presenting sponsor through the 2021 concert series, STAR Bank.

The lineup includes: June 6, Dave & Rae; June 13, The Bishops; June 20, Saddlebrook; June 27, Jambo; July 11, Endless Summer Band; July 18, The Doo! Band; and July 25, The Cosmic Situation.

New this summer, all seven concerts, which all begin at 7 p.m. will take place at Dillon Park on Thursday evenings in June and July. Due to the attendance difference at Dillon and Forest parks, the decision was made to bring more concerts to Dillon Park, where an average of 1,000 people attend each show.

The concert series is free and guests are welcome to bring their own food and beverages or enjoy refreshments for sale by local vendors.

In 2018, more than 10,000 attendees from Noblesville and surrounding communities enjoyed the series.

Asner said he had no idea when he did the first reading in May 2016 at the Lincoln Center in New York that he would still be performing it three years later.

“It was a beautiful play, a beautiful presentation,” he said. “I didn’t know that Jeff would be able to mount a tour such as we are doing on the East Coast, primarily.

The fact that audiences are all spellbound by what we do, even though it’s a reading, I’m quite happy to achieve these results.”

Cohen said he chose Asner because he is his favorite actor. When Asner did the first reading, Cohen said he “was brilliant, as I knew he would be.”

Asner is OK with people mostly identifying him with his Lou Grant role.

“It never bothered me,” Asner said. “I prized the identification of Lou Grant, an ordinary man who instilled trust in everyone who witnessed him. Twelve years in the role, seven comedically and five dramatically. I like the results.”

Asner is still touring in a one-man show, “A Man and His Prostate.”

“It’s a wonderfully educational seminar with lots of laughs. Nothing can be finer,” he said. “I felt I owed it to ‘The Soap Myth’ to put a hold on my other activities and spread the word wherever I can.”

Artisan store to open May 1

But he has a passion for OPENING auto racing, too.

“I’ve been a car guy since I was 3 years old,” said Rabbers, a retired civil engineer.

Rabbers is one of the 12 to 13 Indiana Artisans who will work in the Indiana Artisan store, which is set to open May 1 at 22 Range Line Rd., in the former home of Hoosier Salon.

Indiana Artisan closed in October 2018 after 11 months in its previous spot on 111 Main St. in Carmel.

“We couldn’t come to terms on a new lease. I think we were destined to have this.

This is much more space than we had,” Indiana Artisan Director Rosalyn Demaree said.

“Indiana Artisans never really had a home, and we can nest here.”

The store will feature gifts and art made by more than 100 visual and food artists whose work has been determined to be

The May 11 grand opening, set in conjunction with Meet Me on Main, will feature New Carlisle potter Steven Skinner demonstrating how he makes his brilliantly glazed, functional stoneware, and a Meet the Artist reception with Larry Hampton, a former racecar driver from Evansville whose watercolor and color pencil work primarily focuses on cars and transportation.

Notre-Dame survival stories Commentary by Don Knebel The recent conflagration in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris (Our Lady of Paris) is the most ruinous event in the TRAVEL history of that beloved symbol of Paris, but is not its first brush with destruction.

Construction of Notre-Dame began in 1163 after the Bishop of Paris ordered that an enormous new church be erected on the Île de la Cité, an island in the Seine. When finally consecrated in 1345, the Gothic church was 427 feet long and 157 feet wide. Two 230-foot-tall towers anchored the west end and a spire extended from the roof between the arms of the transept.

During the 16th century, French Protestants destroyed large sections of the church in the name of religious purity and King Louis XIV replaced stained glass windows with clear glass in the name of modernity. In 1786, the spire, weakened by centuries of wind and neglect, was removed. In 1789, French revolutionaries, seeing Notre-Dame as the symbol of the monarchy and its church al-

lies, destroyed much of the statuary, melted the bronze bells to make cannons, took lead from the roof for bullets and briefly used the cathedral as a warehouse. Parisians called for demolishing the crumbling eyesore until Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” led to demands for its restoration. An extensive restoration, undertaken between 1844 and 1869, added an ornate 300-foot-tall spire, made of wood and lead, and an 8,000-pipe organ.

In 1935, to protect the cathedral from further harm, a sliver from Notre-Dame’s most prized relic, the crown of thorns, was placed inside a copper rooster atop the spire. Nine years later, the church escaped destruction when retreating Nazi troops defied Hitler’s order to burn it down. Although the spire did not survive the fire, the protective rooster and much of the cathedral did.
