At 1:30 p.m. April 8, the Bryan Clauson historical marker was unveiled at Forest Park Shelter 5 in Noblesville as a lasting memory of the racecar driver, who died Aug. 7, 2016, from injuries after an Aug. 6 crash at the Belleville (Kan.) Nationals midget car race.

Indianapolis 500 broadcaster Howdy Bell served as the master of ceremonies. Speakers included Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear; Bob Jenkins, former chief announcer for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Network; Clauson’s parents, Tim and Diana; and his fiancé, Lauren Stewart. The event also drew several USAC drivers, including Kirk Spridgeon and Clauson’s Dale Coyne Racing teammate Pippa Mann, and the Winchester Speedway Barber Shop Quartet.

County Deer Advisory Council — A new pilot program started by Indiana Whitetail Deer Herd Management group and the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources has begun in Hamilton County.

The County Deer Advisory Council program is designed after a similar one in Wisconsin, its purpose is to allow all stakeholders a chance to have their voices heard regarding their county’s deer herd. The council is made up of farmers, forestry, local government, tourism, transportation, landowners, non-consumptive users and a diseasemonitoring organization. The Hamilton County Deer Advisory Council’s first meeting will be at 10 a.m. April 22 at Strawtown Koteewi Park’s Koteewi Archerty, 11909 Koteewi Dr., Noblesville.

This meeting is open to the public.

Bryan Clauson Strut 2 Save Lives — Family members of late Noblesville racecar driver Bryan Clauson are now prepping for their third annual dog-walk event at 11 a.m. April 30 at Forest Park in Noblesville, which is shifting its focus this year to reflect the positive story that came after his death. Days after his death, the Clauson family revealed to the public that Clauson was a registered organ donor. His heart, lungs, both kidneys and his liver saved five lives. In addition, Clauson’s donation of tissue has the chance to enhance approximately 75 lives over the next decade. The event will include several registration levels including “lazy dog” for those who don’t want to walk or can’t make it to the event to still donate.

Other levels include various pricing for individuals who just want to participate in the event but won’t be walking with a dog, or for those who want to bring multiple pets. Registration for the event begins at 10 a.m., and final walkers will begin no later than 3 p.m. To register for the event, visit bit.ly/2oAbUVv. E & B Paving plans to begin work next month on a $1.6 million project to repair and resurface more than nine roads miles of pavement on Ind. 38 between Ind. 32 in Noblesville and I-69 in Pendleton.

The project will include repairing aged sections of pavement on the stretch before applying a 3/4-inch ultrathin bonded wearing course between Ind. 13 and Ind. 32 and paving an inch-and-a-half asphalt overlay between I-69 and Ind. 13.

Construction zone signs will be installed before the end of April. Crews are scheduled to begin pavement patching on or after May 1. Weather-permitting, the ultrathin bonded wearing course will be applied between Ind.13 and Ind. 32 by June, and resurfacing between I-69 and Ind. 13 will follow. The project is expected to be complete before the end of July.

Ind. 38 will remain open through the project. Flaggers will be used to direct traffic around work zones.

The surface treatment is intended to preserve and extend the life of highways by an average of approximately nine years, depending on traffic volumes.

The one-pass application is a fast-moving operation that allows traffic to drive on the surface treatment within minutes and causes minimal traffic delays.

Benefits of pavement preservation include improved safety, smoother ride, fewer construction delays, better appearance, greater value and lower taxpayer cost.

The Indiana Dept. of Transportation said one lane mile of highway can cost more than $12 million to build.

For the past several years, INDOT has been expanding its preservation programs to keep pavement and bridges in good condition for as long as possible, targeting bridges and roadway sections with the right treatments at the right times. Pavement preservation projects may include crack sealing, chip sealing, pothole repair and resurfacing.

NHS students capture state DECA award

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Three Noblesville High School students took an idea for a fashion clothing line for an online store and recognition turned it into a state winner.

“We knew we could go beyond competing and build this into a functional company,” junior Brady Nicholson said. “We had more exact numbers, and we had products that we were already creating. We wore those (shirts) for competition. For us, it was just showing our company could become the real deal and succeed in the real world.”

Brady, along with team members seniors Braxton Bragg and Max Flinchum, captured the Independent Business category in the DECA state competition March 5-7 in Indianapolis. The team will now compete at the DECA’s International Career Development conference in Anaheim, Calif., April 25-29.

Brady is the son of NHS business teacher and co-DECA club sponsor Dan Nicholson.

Fellow business teacher Kari Richardson is the other co-sponsor.

I’m a mess, people. I smell, I haven’t brushed my teeth in over 30 hours and I’m choking back tears as I humor watch an homage to the late Arnold Palmer. Wow. Even I am impressed with this level of falling apart.

What gives?

Well, as you may remember from last week, I headed down to Florida with five-sixths of my family for spring break vacation. I’ve just returned, having driven through the night for 16 hours straight.

Doo helped some, taking the 1-to-5 a.m.“orphan maker” shift, and then again from 7 to 9 when my eyes quite literally began to cross. I suppose when a middle-ager like myself only gets about four hours of upright dozing, she’s bound to be a little off.

But I think my emotional reaction to the Masters Tournament is more than the result of post-road trip exhaustion. I grew up watching golf. I have vivid memories of Papaw sipping his highball and cheering on Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. My parents have a painting of their favorite players hanging in their kitchen. Doo and I have always followed Phil Mickelson and fondly recall his first green jacket win just a month after our fourth child was born. When I hear the CBS intro music, I get chills. And I may have a commentator crush on Jim Nantz.

As I read back through this, I realize how lame I sound. I can’t pull all-nighters and I actually choose to watch golf, even when awesome movies like “Big Trouble in Little China” are on. I suppose the combination of sleep deprivation, a blatant disrespect for personal hygiene and the gorgeous pink azaleas of Augusta National have left me susceptible to a longing for my youth. Oh, how I long for the ‘80s!

But here in 2017, I should probably just pull myself together and shower. Peace out.

Kudos to the North Carolina Tar Heels for the solid play during the NCAA men’s basketball championship game. While we can happily celebrate the victory, is it OK to pine a bit that our own Indiana teams didn’t fare as well? My beloved IU failed even to make it to the starting line. Then Purdue, Butler and all the Big Ten teams collapsed in due course.

So, we picked a new favorite and cheered for their victory – even if somewhat less passionately! Did we betray our loyalty to our former teams by picking a new hero – or did they fail us by leaving us without one? Our desire to back a winner is a strong one. We find ourselves caught up in the cheering section, advocating for folks that, just a few short weeks earlier, would have seemed inconceivable. Now, we ride the emotional wave with each shot and exchanging lead on the scoreboard.

In giving our allegiance so easily, have we debased our commitment to the home team? Or, are we simply making due with the choices available – and vigorously digging in? Whether it’s sports, politics or menu choices, sometimes we must acquaint ourselves with a backup plan.

Can the fish be just as good as the pasta?

Pasta is our favorite. Should we go hungry if none is offered? Or, should we identify an alternative and find a way to enjoy it, a bit fishy though it may be?

The Tar Heels brought some terrific entertainment. And, we enjoyed it. Still, my heart remembers the storied victories of my own alma mater’s past. As a spectator sport, basketball is better when we choose a team to support – even if we hold out, at least a bit of our love, for the home team.

Responsible stewardship of tax dollars the hallmark of good government Commentary by Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear and Noblesville Common Councilor Chris Jensen One fundamental principle should guide the use of public funds: taxes are investments on behalf of the public. As such, elected officials have a responsibility to ensure those investments result in tangible dividends to taxpayers.

When it becomes evident that the public’s return on tax investments is stagnating, officeholders must consider fundamental changes in the way they approach those investments.

In recent years, infrastructure conditions in Indiana have seriously deteriorated, with 97 percent of local agencies citing inadequate revenue for road maintenance as a primary cause. The problem persists at the state level as well, with 9 percent of major roads in Indiana rated in “poor” condition. Fortunately, the state legislature is making strides to reverse this trend. House Bill 1002, a long-term

infrastructure funding plan, re-evaluates the way we fund our roads, since our current methods clearly fall short.

In the original version of HB 1002, one of the primary solutions to our local road funding woes is a significant expansion of the Community Crossings matchinggrant program. If passed, the measure would allocate a $193 million up-front cash infusion to the program, reduce the local matching requirement from 50 percent to 20 percent, and dedicate 1.5 cents (per gallon) of future gas tax revenues to the program, giving it a dedicated source of funds. The House road funding plan is based on the LTAP local need of $1.8 billion to eliminate all poorrated roads over the next several years.

As passed out of the House, House Bill 1002 makes good financial sense. It gets to the heart of the structural flaws in the way Indiana finances its infrastructure, and gives state and local government the tools needed to invest your tax dollars effectively.

City approves two business-growth projects

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com At its April 11 meeting, the Noblesville Common Council approved resolutions that will help exdevelopment pand two Noblesville businesses.

The action has designated two economic revitalization areas for Noblesville Assisted Living Group and Universal Blower Pac, Inc. Both projects were preliminarily approved at the meeting, but the council will vote on a final confirmatory resolution at its April 25 meeting.

Noblesville Assisted Living Group Noblesville Assisted Living Group, 9600 E. 146th St., will build a new four-story senior housing facility on 3.67 acres in Noblesville Business Park. The 105,145-square-foot building will consist of 124 living units – 100 for assisted living and 24 for memory care and dementia. The facility also will include a commercial kitchen, activity space, dining room and more.

The total estimated capital investment for the project is $23 million for land and building construction, staff, fees and reserves. The real property new-construction cost is approximately $14 million. Over four

years, the company will save $1,012,320 in real property tax. Beginning in the fifth year and thereafter, the city said it estimates the tax payment to be $389,354.

Approximately 56 new full-time employees will be hired with an overall payroll of $2.15 million. Construction will begin this summer and be completed by the summer of 2018.

Universal Blower Pac, Inc. Universal Blower Pac, Inc., 440 Park 32 W. Dr., has purchased two acres to the west of its current footprint and plans to build 8,925 square feet of warehousing and distribution space. The property to be added will consist of manufacturing equipment, including machines, welding equipment, a testing stand, overhead crane and associated equipment.

Total new capital investment in real estate and personal property is $1,140,325 to expand its headquarters, manufacturing, fabrication and assembly facility. The company will save approximately $71,001 over five years in real property tax and $5,472 over two years in personal property tax. Beginning in the sixth year and thereafter, the city estimates the tax payment to be $23,667.

Universal Blower Pac, Inc., said it anticipates hiring 16 new employees and will retain its 31 employees with an average salary of $75,000. The company was founded by Ray Fiechter in 1979 and opened its corporate headquarters in Noblesville in 1984. The company provides innovation for manufactured blower systems and engineered solutions nationally and globally.

The project is expected to begin in May.

Federal Hill Commons to open next week with grand opening celebration

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com Next week, after nearly five years of planning and development, the City of Noblesville and Noblesville Parks Dept. will open Federal Hill Commons.

The urban park will hold its cover story grand opening celebration from 6 to 10 p.m. April 29 on its six acres, bounded by Nixon and Logan streets and Ind. 32 and Ind. 19.

“We’re excited. We’re ready to get it up and running and have some fun down here because there’s going to be some cool things going on,” Parks Director Brandon Bennett said.

A standard day at the park won’t put it at capacity, but Bennett said the city plans for the park to handle 2,000 to 3,000 people for its larger events.

“Restrooms and parking are not going to be able to accommodate 2,000 to 3,000 people, but it is an urban park, and it was designed that way. That means it’s walkable,” Bennett said. “We’ve worked with our neighbors to make sure we’re all on the same page as far as parking goes, including Riverview (Health) and Kroger.

We have 1,200 spaces within a five-minute walk.

“This space was not only created as a park, but as an economic development incubator. I like to think of this as the heartbeat of this side of town, of this side of the river, that’s going to pump blood out to all the other areas, and we’re already seeing it happen with the development of BlueSky (Technology Partners).

You’re starting to see land for sale in this area, and that’s because it’s going to be ripe for development.”

THE PARK’S FEATURES Amphitheater — “The anchor of the park is the stage, the amphitheater, the First Merchants Pavilion, as it will be known, and the lawn,” Bennett said.

Bennett said this part of the facility is designed to accommodate a full symphony, has its own sound and lights system and will be available for rent to third-party clients after the April 29 opening.

Guests can expect to see concerts and theatrical performances, and visitors will find permanently housed musical instruments at the back of the stage, donated by the Noblesville Parks Foundation.

The Green Room — The site of the former First Merchants Bank at 107 S. Logan St., the Green Room is the park’s rental and indoor event facility. It will be used for corporate events, general rentals for events like family reunions, birthday parties and wedding and baby showers.

“The room will be available for rental any time after April 29, which is good because we’ve had to turn a lot of people away at Forest Park without spaces there because we’re booked up. I’d also like to see some community groups

Market Plaza — “The market plaza is a really big amenity where the farmers market will be,” Bennett said. “The whole market is not going to fit in there, and that’s a great problem to have, but there’s plenty of space for it to overflow into the rest of the park. But overall, it’s going to be really nice having a shelter there, having permanent restrooms there, having a playground there. It’s something (Noblesville Main Street) never had in the past, and it’s going to add a lot.”

In effort to put as much history into the park as possible, Bennett said during construction the city has been able to reuse elements of some of Noblesville’s former landmarks “For instance, there are several pieces, I think 10, of limestone out on the elliptical on the north end of the park. That was from the old mill when it was torn down. We harvested that and brought it over here,” Bennett said.

“So, we’re trying to kind of preserve a little bit of that history and heritage. Then, under the parking lot and under the market plaza are actually parts of the former Conner Elementary.

When they demolished that building, they pulverized a lot of that brick and material, and we were able to reuse it. We’ll implement some signage that talks a little bit about that, too.

“The other aspect of the park, the one we’re starting to work on now, is bringing the visual arts to this park. Certainly, we’ve got the performance art through the concerts and theater events.”

Hamilton County’s Bison-tennial Bison – an art project commissioned by the Indiana Association of United Ways for 2016’s bicentennial celebration – will be displayed at Federal Hill.

“We’ve got another piece that has been done by a local artist that will come out here, and then we’re going to commission some other artwork as we get funding available for that,” Bennett said.

Vonnegut, Jr. home on display April 29-May 14

The 56th annual St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild Decorators’ Show House and Gardens will feature the boyhood home of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., April home show 29-May 14.

The 5,907-squarefoot residence, at 4401 N. Illinois St. in Indianapolis, was built by the author’s architect father, Kurt Vonnegut, Sr. Construction began in the fall of 1922 and was completed in the spring of 1923. The house incorporates a primarily “Arts & Crafts” architectural style, with components of mahogany woodwork, oak floors, ceramic tile and leaded glass interior doors, but also incorporates an eclectic English County and English Tudor vernacular.

Architect Evans Woollen III, famous for designing Clowes Memorial Hall and the Barton Towers, also lived in the home.

The Indianapolis home is owned by the Walton family, which purchased it in 2008.

Decorator Chair Joan Hilger said the Decorators’ Show House and Garden is one of the oldest traditions of Indiana. In-

dianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, in partnership with the the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library and Visit Indy, proclaimed 2017 “The Year of the Vonnegut.”

According to Hilger, through remodeling projects, 26 designers and two landscape artists have upgraded the house to give it a fresher, more modern look while maintaining the same footprint and “great bones” of the house.

“It’s a unique house, and it’s a great way to raise money for a great cause,” Hilger said.

Proceeds for the 2017 St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild Decorators’ Show House and Gardens will benefit Eskenazi Health.

The show house will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 29 through May 14. Adult admission is $20.

Sondheim revue set for The Cat

“Side by Side by Sondheim” will be held May 4 to 17 at the 150-seat The Cat, 254 1st Ave. SW., Carmel.

“It’s a real cute show and pulls out a lot of his best stuff,” said June Clair, a Carmel resident.

The revue features songs from Sondheim musicals such as “Company,” “A Little Night Music” and “Follies.” In addition, there are songs Sondheim wrote the lyrics for from “West Side Story” and “Gypsy.”

include more people in our production,” Kingston said. “So we have two couples, myself as the narrator and two accompanists. The challenge has been assigning everything. The original production only had three people on stage. So it’s taking this gorgeous music and assigning it to the different people that I have. It’s fun and challenging.”

As narrator, Kingston explains the setup for each number.

Clair and her husband, John, took over Carmel Repertory Theatre in 2013 and renamed it Carmel Theatre Company. The group had been using Studio 15 on Main Street.

My top 5 paint tips Commentary by Krista Bocko Something about spring makes me want to change things up, including paint colors.

If you’re in the same boat and spring thinking of the same in your home, I have a few tips I’ve found super helpful, and I’m sharing them in case they help you, too.

Test your paint color. Test, test, test!

Buy a sample jar of the color you’re thinking of for $4 and some poster board. Paint the poster board, leaving a strip of white on one or two edges. Place on the wall in different areas of the room and see how it looks in different lights. Not only can you move it around, but leaving one or two edges of white will help visually separate the color you’re testing from the color already on the wall. Be sure to hold it up next to trim and other fixed elements.

Pick the right finish for the space you’re painting. The paint people can help with this, but I suggest eggshell for most rooms, such as living and dining, hallways, kids rooms, etc. I have seen WAY too many-flat painted walls in homes with kids, but kids or not, they look very worn very fast. Flat paint is not able to be spot-cleaned well at

all, plus it feels chalky and dry. I only recommend flat paint for ceilings.

Invest in good tools. My favorite is the 2.5-inch angled ‘shortcut’ paintbrush and those palm-sized paint rollers. I used to buy the big old paint rollers but the small ones are just perfect and so much easier to maneuver in small spaces.

Consider your whole house color scheme. I mentioned this before in my decorating fails, but I’ve made plenty of color mistakes. If you’re like me, the good news is it’s only paint, and it can be remedied with time and effort.

Write down the color name, sheen and room it was used in on the can lid in marker once you have the perfect color, because when you amass paint cans, you will forget what’s what. Also, paint the color onto a paint stir stick and write where you used it. This saved me when I had to make a color match and no longer had the paint can.

Position: Youth Advocate Location: Noblesville, IN Type: Full Time Organization: Prevail, Inc. Description: Prevail, Inc. provides crisis intervention and restorative support services for adult, adolescent and child survivors of crime and abuse to residents of Hamilton and surrounding counties. Prevail is seeking a full-time Youth Advocate responsible for crisis response, prevention and intervention services for youth victims of crime, family violence and sexual assault. Services include individual and group facilitation for child survivors (ages 5-13) of family violence and sexual assault.

Duties: Provide intervention and follow-up services to clients as needed, which may include (but are not limited to): intake assessment, community referrals and resources, court advocacy, assistance in filing protective orders, completing safety and action plans, and inter/intra-agency networking and advocacy on behalf of the victim.

Facilitate at least two support groups for children (ages 5-13), which may include primary and secondary victims of family violence, as well as a family group. Provide individual services on an as needed basis.

Maintain and update group curriculum, identifying resources, materials, speakers, etc.

Serve as a reference guide for the community in the areas of victim resources and violence prevention, by direct referrals for clients, and through public presentations and participation in community organizations.

Complete 24-hour on-call crisis line shifts and provide coverage to the Child Advocacy Center.

Collaborate with Prevail staff, other agencies, groups, organizations, and individuals to identify and develop prevention/intervention services for victims of crime and other populations within the community.

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field; or a combination of experience, education and/or training.

Competitive compensation package including medical, dental, vision, paid time off, paid holidays, and professional development. Salary commensurate with education and experience (starting salary - $16/hour).
