After being announced in September at the annual State of the City address, the City of Noblesville RECREATION has opened its two Zagster bike-share stations – one in Forest Park and one at the Riverwalk, near Maple Avenue and Fifth Street, next to White River.

On March 23, 10 cruiser bikes became available between the two stations for members to use for on-demand, local trips.

“With our trail inventory ever increasing, it’s natural for the city to assist people in being active and outdoors,” Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear stated in a press release. “I’m excited to get the Noblesville bike share rolling down the right path by opening our first two bike share stations in downtown Noblesville.

These will allow residents and guests to take better advantage of the natural assets of our parks and the White River.”

Noblesville bike-share stations feature the Zagster bike, a cruiser bike, with

automatic front and rear lights, seven gears, adjustable seats, a Bluetooth electronic ring lock, fenders, a chain guard, bell, reflectors and basket.

Those who want to ride can do so by downloading the Zagster app or visiting bike.zagster.com/noblesville. The cost is $1 for every 30 minutes with a $20 limit.

Keeping the bike more than 24 hours results in a $30 overtime charge. Annual memberships also are available with discounted rates.

Ditslear said the city plans to share connectivity throughout the county, and in May, a third station will be opened on Midland Trace Trail at the trailhead on Hazel Dell Parkway. There are Zagster bike-sharing stations in Westfield and throughout Carmel.

The project is the result of a partnership between the city, Zagster, Hamilton County Tourism, BorgWarner and Huntington University doctorate student Charlotte Arnos.

Noblesville resident Al Hunter has a long love of American Basketball Association memorabilia.

That led him SPORTS to meeting Bob Netolicky, who played with the Indiana Pacers when the ABA started in the 1967-68 season.

Netolicky, another Noblesville resident who played nine seasons in the ABA, is a supporter of the Hunter Dropping Dimes Foundation, which helps ex-ABA players financially.

Hunter is a Westfield High School graduate and former WHS baseball coach.

The ABA will celebrate its 50th anniversary April 7 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The banquet has limited seating and costs $350 per ticket.

Hunter and Netolicky were asked by the Dropping Dimes Foundation to create something for the public.

Hunter and Netolicky, best known as Neto, have organized an event in Hinkle Fieldhouse’s West Gym from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. earlier that day. There will be a sports card event held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hunter said the players are going to receive 50th anniversary rings that Netolicky and former Pacers coach Bob “Slick” Leonard designed.

“Ironically, the sponsor is one of the owners from the old Spirits of St. Louis franchise of the ABA,” Hunter said. “It’s like a championship ring. We wanted to do something good for the players.”

Hunter said the event will start with a ring ceremony. Following will be an autograph session with approximately 100 former ABA players starting at 12:30 p.m.

Among the former players expected to sign are George McGinnis, Dan Issel, George Gervin, Louie Dampier, Rick Barry and Spencer Haywood. Julius Erving is attending the banquet but has not yet committed to the autograph session, Hunter said.

There is a $10 charge for entry. There are two items for purchase to sign, an ABA pennant with the Dropping Dimes logo for $150 and an ABA red, white and blue ball for $230.

Those seeking autographs must buy a pennant or a ball. Additional items to sign are $25 each.

Sheriff candidates talk at forum

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Area residents heard from Hamilton County Sheriff candidates in a forum-like setting last month at a POLITICS Westfield Chamber event.

Candidates Bill Clifford, Dennis Quakenbush, Eddie Moore and Mitch Russell answered questions from chamber President Jack Russell about the sheriff’s race.

Russell, who serves as security manager for Riverview Health, comes from a law enforcement background of 41 years.

“I have been very lucky to have many opportunities in management, budgeting, hiring and terminations and have been very successful at that,” he said. “That’s the greatest assets I can give to this county.”

Clifford said the reason the race is important is because voters elect the one to oversee the safety of the community.

“You have loved ones at home. The sheriff is the constitutional law enforcement officer that you all elect. You choose who is going to be the top cop in your community,” said Clifford, a sergeant with the HCSO. Quakenbush, who serves as captain of the patrol division for the HCSO, said the

race was important to residents because they don’t want more crime in the county.

“We attract great businesses to this community, and we don’t want crime to creep up from Marion County,” Quakenbush said. “We want someone who is passionate and tough on crime.”

Moore, an HCSO commander, said he is proud of founding the Hamilton County Chaplaincy program.

“This is where we chose to live. I chose to live here because the people of Hamilton County are wonderful people, and being a police officer here has been just a fantastic ride,” Moore said.

The candidates will participate in a forum at 7 p.m. April 17 at Ivy Tech, 300 N. 17th St., Noblesville.

EXHIBIT The exhibit highlights work by elementary-aged students in the Noblesville Schools system.

“When Nickel Plate first started, it was supposed to be about promoting a small group of professional artists who have studios here,” Nickel Plate Arts Executive Director Ailithir McGill said. “We still want to do that, but as we’ve grown, we really realize we need to be more about the entire community and fostering creativity at all levels. This exhibit gives us the perfect opportunity to do that by inviting in some younger artists from the community to display their work here and start learning what it’s like to display their work, to work with a gallery and be part of a gallery.”

The Young Artists’ Showcase began in 2013. Items are chosen by Noblesville Schools’ elementary art teachers. The show will be April 6 to 27.

“What I like about it best is it brings so much energy and color and creativity to the gallery,” McGill said. “One of the things

Local photographer’s work to be on display during Masters

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com A Noblesville artist’s work will be featured at the Augusta Regional Airport during the 2018 Masters Tournament ART April 2-8.

Christine Merchent, creator of the “Ballerinas on the Green” series, uses ballerinas and classical ballet themes with golfers and golf courses as her backdrop. “(Merchent’s) portrait Merchent style will not only attract attention from golf fans, but the dance community as well,” said Lauren Smith, spokesperson for the Augusta Regional Airport. “The Airport Art Committee thought the airport would be a perfect venue to highlight her creative talent.”

It is estimated that more than 250,000 people visit the airport annually. Five of Merchent’s pieces will be featured. All of the photos were taken at Noblesville’s Purgatory Golf Club, which Merchent and

her husband own. Her son plays golf for Noblesville High School.

“The golf course is my studio,” Merchent said. “Replacing golfers with ballerinas makes it a fantasy, but because every other element in the art is so true to the game, it feels like it could happen. The project as a whole also highlighted two very different junior sports.”

Locally, Merchent was named the 2017 Nickel Plate Arts Artist of the Year. In 2014, she was recognized as a top 10 photographer in the state by the Indianapolis Professional Photographer’s Guild.

Niedermeyer talks student internships, safety and more

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com The Noblesville community heard from Noblesville Schools Supt. Beth Niedermeyer at the annual State of the Schools COVER STORY presentation March 21 in conjunction with the Noblesville Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

Attendees also heard from student Abbie VanMeter about the schools’ internship program.

Before introducing the superintendent, VanMeter shared her experience with the Noblesville Schools internship program. She is a Noblesville High School senior who interns with the chamber.

“I’ve been an intern with the chamber and (Hamilton County Leadership Academy) for (the) last semester, and I’ve attended Noblesville Schools my whole life,” she said. “I’ve been provided with wonderful opportunities and experiences because of that. I’ve had incredible teachers who inspired me. Here, I have been pushed outside my comfort zone in the best ways and allowed to achieve things I didn’t know I could.

One of the best resources Noblesville Schools has to offer is its internships. I get to be part of it and work hands-on with events taking place.”

When Niedermeyer took the stage, the first topic she addressed was school safety, mentioning February’s school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. “Whenever there’s a school shooting, it really impacts all of us,” she said. “One of the things you need to know is (safety) is a top priority for us. We spend a lot of time talking about ways we can continue to strengthen safety measures.

We have 14 certified safety specialists and four school resource officers, and we do safety drills continuously. It’s near and dear to our hearts.”

Niedermeyer discussed the SpeakUp App, which allows students to report incidents such as bullying, threats or if someone is considering suicide. More than 200 issues have been brought to administrators’ attention through the app.

Another topic Niedermeyer highlighted was neuroscience and how it affects students in different grade levels.

“I think it’s really important for us as we are teaching students to understand how the brain impacts learning,” she said. “It’s important for us as educators to understand neuroscience research and our parents and our students, so when they are feeling things, they understand

it’s a biological function and it’s normal. We are spending a great amount of time helping people understand that so they can be successful.”

Niedermeyer said school environments are constantly changing and stresssed that the community should embrace the changes.

“Why is change a good thing? Well, from our perspective, you have to make sure you are incorporating all those changes, so we are preparing students not for the world we live in today, but for the world they will be living in tomor-

row,” Niedermeyer said. “We want more for our students and children, so embrace the changes you continue to see coming out of Noblesville Schools as we continue to do our best to prepare students for the future they will be living and working in.”

To conclude the program, Niedermeyer played a video of what a modern-day kindergarten classroom looks like. It would include areas for collaboration and group work and different stations.

Questions and answers Commentary by Terry Anker The sage once said, “God gave us two ears and one mouth so that we’d listen twice as much as we talk.” That may well have been the intention, but in practice, it rarely seems to work out that way. Too often, we share our points of view with little notion of the perspective of the folks with whom we are interacting. With age comes a bit of wisdom and, if we are lucky, a slowing of our belief that we “know” what the other person has in mind without taking the time to ask them. Yet, we can still seem eager to hear our own voice.

In conflict with others at work or at home, we feel compelled to air our grievance. We explain our take on the perceived or real transgression and demand contrition or even retribution. But, how do we know that our assumptions are valid? 9 In working to resolve disagreement or performance issues in our businesses, we work to lead with questions rather than accusations. Young managers are coached to ask two questions before making any statements. The first must be a sincere effort to avoid allegation. The second question is designed to require the interrogator to listen to the answer of the first. Moreover, active listening can clear one’s mind of his or her own bias. Too often we hold our breath while others speak, our mouths already full with our response even though the other speaker has yet to communicate.

What point can be found in a question if we rarely bother to listen to the answer?

Richardson impact immeasurable Editor, Kathy Richardson has made our city, county and state proud over the past 26 years serving District 29 as Indiana state representative.

Kathy listened, she did her research and made the best decisions for District 29. The positive economic growth in the district over the 26 years of her service speaks for itself. Her impact has been immeasurable. She carried her local government experience to the Statehouse to ensure her district’s concerns were heard.

She also played a large part in engineering policy to bring elections into the electronic age, both on a local and statewide basis. The end result is the

expansion of voting centers and making our voting process more efficient and accessible.

I’ve enjoyed working with Kathy on moving District 29 and Noblesville forward. She is a leader in all respects, and I greatly appreciate her friendship.

I will continue to support and work with Kathy as she seeks her new role as Hamilton County clerk. I know she will be a great servant leader in the clerk’s office providing the high quality of service Hamilton County residents are accustomed to.

I’d like to share a couple “fashion” incidents that have left me utterly confused about how someone my age is supposed to dress.

HUMOR I was with my youngest at Forever 21, a cheap clothing store aimed at, as the name implies, young adults. Let me repeat, I. Was. With. Her. Not the other way around. As usual, it was a zoo, so I sent her along to Pac Sun while I stood in line with her purchase, a denim jacket. I see a current student across the way and wave, immediately besieged by two opposing thoughts: “Yes! I’ll be known as the cool teacher who shops at Forever 21!” and “No! I’ll be called the old biddy who is seriously mistaken about her ability to rock a circa 1986 crop-top.”

Then, three days later, I find myself at Forever 21 Red, the rack version of the aforementioned, with my older daughter.

Again, I’m simply there in the chauffer capacity, not as an actual shopper. While standing in the dressing room awaiting my child’s “outfit” reveal, a girl emerges from behind her door in a baggy tee-shirt, highwaisted jeans and Top Gun aviators. She assesses herself in the mirror, notices me and asks for my opinion, adding, “I mean, you were alive in the ‘80s, right?” Ouch.

Yes, I came of age amidst big hair, puffed sleeves and Tom Cruise-inspired everything, all of which are apparently back in style. And no, I don’t want to appear out-oftouch with contemporary fashion trends.

But if I embrace the retro-’80s look for myself, won’t I be committing the even bigger fashion faux pas of dressing too young?

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Some Like It Hot began as a small Fishers Farmers Market operation the summer of 2016, but co-owner Elaine Salgado soon realized there was a market GROWTH for tamales and salsa.

“We wanted to see if there was a market out there for tamales and salsa, and within the third week of us being at the farmers market we started selling 500 tamales and 1,500 ounces of salsa in four hours on Saturdays, and we capped it at that,” Salgado said.

The recipes are her husband Fernando’s, who hails from Mexico. The couple lives in Noblesville.

“He loves to cook, which is why people were trying to convince us to start a restaurant, but we said no, we don’t want to be tied down, so the farmers market was a good alternative,” Salgado said.

Some Like It Hot is a part of Indiana Grown, which connects retailers with locally grown items. A food broker contacted the Salgados, and Some Like It Hot has started to expand. It will now be sold at Market District in Carmel and is distributed through Piazza Produce.

“Market District tried our food, and in the same meeting, they said this is what we want,” Salgado said. “That was just within the last month.”

The Salgados have set their goals higher. They want to distribute across the state and possibly the nation. To do so, Some Like It Hot must operate out of a commercial kitchen, which the Salgados are seeking.

(GILD) is a large pharmaceutical company with products that treat HIV, certain blood cancers, high blood pressure, angina and the flu and is the maker of Tamiflu. Although it will post a revenue drop this year, its assets include low debt, large cash reserves for research and a focus on innovation.

Salgado encourages other small businesses to not be afraid to take the leap in order to grow.

“Take advice from other people, be willing to have an open mind and keep working hard and take that scary step,” she said. “It’s hard. It’s hard to let go of a full-time job and just plunge into it, into the unknown, but you can’t make it if you don’t (try). It’s scary, but it’s thrilling and really exciting, and right now it’s paying off.”

Whether you’re a walker or a runner, you can start your training plan and avoid injuries with these tips.

How should I get started if I want to train for a race?

There are lots of resources available for training, and many will RUNNING cater to your individual needs. If you’re looking for a running group, check your local gym or running apparel store. A running group is a good option if you like having accountability and a set training schedule.

The key with any training plan is to start where you feel comfortable. Consider the running pace, mileage and intensity of the training plan. Be realistic about your goals, and if you haven’t exercised recently, check in with your primary care physician beforehand to make sure it’s safe.

What are common injuries for runners, and how can those injuries be prevented?

Most injuries, such as shin splints, strains, muscle spasm or plantar fasciitis, are repetitive strain injuries. These injuries happen when your muscles and tendons

are overworked. Prevent this by sticking to your training program – don’t skip a week or move too fast. Regular exercise keeps your muscles moving and your joints loose, which reduces the chance of a repetitive strain injury. Don’t forget to do a thorough warm-up and cool-down before and after exercise.

It’s common to be sore during training, but what are signs I might be injured?

Typical soreness comes with any workout, especially if you are trying to push your time or intensity. Most soreness will settle after resting and stretching. If you feel a sharp pain, or if your symptoms are persistent, those are warning signs of injury.

Injuries can happen to any runner, and treatment often involves rest and rehabilitation. If you do suffer an injury, that doesn’t always mean you can’t participate in your race. Talk with your doctor about your options for crossing the finish line.

Federal Hill Commons add Flashback Fridays

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Noblesville Assistant Parks Director Mike Hoffmeister figures there is something for everyone in the CONCERTS nine free concerts announced for Federal Hill Commons.

“We want Federal Hill to be all encompassing in music types, so we want to feature all different kinds of music,” Hoffmeister said. “We understand that downtown Noblesville has a core population that we want to tap into, but we also want to tap into the young families and young adults that might want to come to Noblesville (from surrounding areas). The idea behind Flashback Fridays is to feature a specific genre of music.”

For instance, Classic Rock Experience, which opens the series Aug. 10, will feature ‘70s music.

Last season, there were five concerts at Federal Hill Commons, which opened in 2017. Four concerts were Tribute Concerts and the fifth was the Grand Opening concert.

Bands returning this summer are 16 Candles and Separate Ways. The Flying Toasters played Dillion Park in 2017. The Classic Rock Experience also played at Federal Hill last year. The rest are making their first appearance at Noblesville Parks Concert series.

There are five concerts Saturday nights in the Concerts at the Commons series and four Flashback Fridays concerts.

Shows in each series will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. at First Merchants Pavilion.

Hoffmeister noted that Karen Waldrup, who will perform July 7, is an up-and-coming country artist from Nashville, Tenn.

Hoffmeister said the artists are regional performers from Chicago, Cincinnati and Nashville.

“The Four Freshmen are flying in from the West Coast, so this is a big step for us to create a better concert series than we had before,” Hoffmeister said.

The Four Freshmen were formed in Indianapolis in 1948. The last original member retired in 1993, but the present group carries on the name.

The Songbook Foundation maintains an exhibition gallery and a vast historical archive at the affiliated Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. The Foundation’s ultimate goal is to establish a Great American Songbook Hall of Fame Museum, similar to the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame and other such institutions.

According to a news release, the MAP Organizational Assessment will guide the staff, board of directors and other stakeholders in analyzing strengths and weaknesses and developing a roadmap for sustainability and advancement.

Old Forester bourbon, .5 oz. maple syrup, half of an orange, piece of cherry wood, orange bitters, Angostura bitters Directions: Smoke a piece of cherry wood by using a blow torch and turn a glass upside down over the wood to capture the smoke.

Thinking pink this spring Commentary by Elizabeth Morse I’m not sure if it’s because I am spending part of April in Paris. Maybe it’s this crummy weather still hangWINEderlust ing around? Whatever the reason, all I can think is pink! I’m suggesting rosé wines today. They are beautiful, food-friendly wines that are typically dry. Rosé is made from a variety of grapes. After the grapes are squished, dark-colored grape skins are allowed to hang out for a bit in the juice.

Basically, the dark skins stain the juice and create lovely pink hues.

Rosé shouldn’t be relegated to warm weather. Nope, it is an excellent choice year-round. Here are my current faves, all on the dry side of the spectrum: Gerard Bertrand Languedoc ‘Cote des Roses’ Rosé, France. At approximately $15 per bottle, this is a value-priced choice.

A tangy wine that seems like a cross between orange-cream and cranberry. It smells like peach and is a beautiful shade

of pale pink.

For just a few bucks more ($19), try Campuget 1753 Rosé. This is an unusual grape juice blend of 90 percent Syrah and 10 percent Vermentino. It’s bigger as rosé goes, but the richness is lively and attractive.

With just a little citrus flavor, what mainly stands out is a more traditional strawberry flavor. A great choice with barbecue.

The splurge today goes to a California wine, Robert Sinskey Rosé of Pinot Noir, Carneros. A vintner known for splendid Cabernet Franc delivers this pale-colored berry bomb. Tons of juicy, bright fruit and great acid make this bottle a winner for sipping and pairing, approximately $32.

Read before burning Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt I truly believe good grammar can make your life more awesome. It can lead to job opportunities, GRAMMAR GUY romantic relationships and even a syndicated column that makes you hyperspecifically famous. Conversely, bad grammar can turn your life into a country song. You can lose your job, your truck, your honey and your dog if your grasp of language suffers.

Today, I want to encourage you to read your emails twice before sending them.

I’ll go one step further and say the same rule applies to tweets and Facebook posts. Fairly or not, people make judgments about you based on the level of correctness of your syntax.

The other day I received a hilariously ironic email that decried the state of grammar among our nation’s youths. The writer passionately went on for a pagelength paragraph about how our collective grammar is going down the drain.

She had some fair points; however, the subject line of her email was “Grammer Guy.” That’s my other column.

“Grammer Guy” is a column dedicated to the acting brilliance and smooth baritone voice of Kelsey Grammer. Did you know he received Emmy nominations on three different television series for portraying Frasier Crane?

OK, so “Grammer Guy” isn’t a thing.

Although, if enough people respond positively to this article, I just may have to write it. I only point out the irony of a gaffe like “Grammer Guy” because the lady who sent me the email was railing against the state of our careless and uninformed grammar.

There are a few easy ways to avoid spelling and grammar gaffes in your public communications. First, read your work aloud prior to sending it. You’ll catch at least half of your errors merely by reading to yourself. Secondly, get another set of eyes on your writing before hitting the send button.

Cairo’s historic synagogue Commentary by Don Knebel Ben Ezra Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in Egypt, located among churches in Coptic Cairo, an ancient area TRAVEL just east of the Nile River. Although conflicting stories explain its unusual location, it was the source of priceless historical documents.

According to one tradition, the synagogue marks the spot where the Prophet Jeremiah assembled Jewish exiles after Babylon had destroyed their Temple in Jerusalem in the sixth century B.C., with some claiming Jeremiah is buried nearby. Others claim the synagogue is located where pharaoh’s daughter discovered the infant Moses in a basket. Nineteenth-century writers concluded the synagogue was once a church located where Mary bathed the infant Jesus during the holy family’s flight to Egypt. According to this account, now largely discredited, the church was forced to sell its building in the ninth century when it could no longer afford taxes imposed by Muslim rulers.

Whatever the truth of any of these claims, what is known is that the syna-

gogue is named for Jerusalem’s Rabbi Ben Ezra, who restored an earlier synagogue on the site in the 12th century. The synagogue became a repository for documents of all kinds that included the word “God,” and therefore could not be destroyed under Jewish law. When the synagogue was restored in the 1890s, builders discovered more than 250,000 documents dating from the ninth century on, including letters written by Maimonides, the great Jewish philosopher who lived nearby after being forced from his home in Córdoba, Spain. This cache of documents, called the “Cairo Geniza,” is the world’s largest collection of medieval documents and provided new information about the life and teachings of Maimonides.

Today, with Cairo’s Jewish population down to a very small number, the Ben Ezra Synagogue, meticulously restored in the 1980s, is maintained as a museum.
