Civil suit against shooter’s parents moved to Marion County Whistlers, Moores agree to change of venue for highly publicized case

A civil case against the parents of the Noblesville West Middle School shooter has been moved out of Hamilton County.

COURTS Hamilton County Superior Court 1 Judge Mike Casati granted a motion filed last month by Kevin and Sarah Moore for a change of venue, which set the course to move a jury trial in which they are defendants out of the Hamilton County court system.

The Moores are the parents of David Moore, who shot teacher Jason Seaman three times and fellow student Ella Whistler seven times at NWMS May 25, 2018. Whistler and her parents, Cory and Julia Whistler, filed a civil tort against the Moores in November 2018, citing that they should have been aware of David’s mental health issues and that his access to weapons inside the family’s home was not restricted.

On March 18, a stipulation was filed stating that the Moores and Whistlers agreed on a new venue for the jury trial – Marion County Superior Court 2. Later that day, Casati granted the motion.

In their request, the Moores asked for the the jury trial to be transferred out of Hamilton County court because of publicity the

case was receiving and fear of not receiving a fair trial. Moving the trial ensures the jury will be made up of residents outside of Hamilton County.

According to Indiana’s Trial Rule 76, “the motion shall be granted only upon a showing…that the party seeking the change will be unlikely to receive a fair trial on account of local prejudice or bias regarding a party or the claim or defense presented by a party.”

In their motion, the Moores said they “respectfully contend that it is unlikely they will receive a fair trial in Hamilton County…

The local community will all have knowledge, experience and preconceptions of the events prior to a trial and a desired outcome,” according to court documents. “Additionally, the classroom where the events underlying this case had approximately 28 other students in it when these events occurred. The school had an additional student enrollment of over 1,300 students, including additional staff. Each of these individuals likely have family and friends. Hence, a large population of individuals exists who have a basic relationship to the school where the events occurred.”

The final part of the motion referenced local newspaper reports and social media posts that “provide evidence that the Moores are unlikely to receive a fair trial,” according to court documents, in which the Moores attached specific articles and social media posts assuming their guilt in neglect.

As of press time, a date for the jury trial had not been set.

Parks and rec superintendent retires — Noblesville Parks and Recreation’s maintenance superintendent, Randy Neff, has retired after 27 years of service.

Neff has been involved in the development of the Noblesville parks system, including the planning and building of the city’s three Neff newest parks – Dillon Park, Federal Hill Commons and Finch Creek Park.

He also recently was recognized as the Indiana Parks and Recreation Association’s Distinguished Life Member of the Year for the 2018 year.

INDOT seeking input — The Indiana Dept. of transportation will host a public open house from 5:30 to 7 p.m. March 27 at Red Bridge Park, 1050 S. Pearl St., Cicero, to educate residents and gather feedback for the U.S. 31 at 236th Street interchange study. The study will help determine the type of interchange INDOT will install.

Murders tore families apart, brought unlikely friends together

Every year, George Allemenos and Bill McCallister get together to celebrate their shared birthday. The two IN MEMORY retirees have been close for 25 years, chatting on the phone a couple times a week and enjoying meals together on occasion.

But the friendship is one they wish never had happened.

The two men met during the trial of a man convicted of killing Allemenos’ only two children and family friend Chris James in 1994. McCallister was hired as a private investigator by the defense, making the friendship even more surprising.

The friendship is but one of several that resulted from one of Hamilton County’s most gruesome and shocking cases. Allemenos is still in frequent contact with the James family and many other people he met because of the tragedy, one of the “good things to come out of this,” he said.

Lita James, the mother of Chris James, said she can still suddenly become emotionally unglued by certain memories and unexpected reminders.

“I don’t think a day goes by that I don’t think of him. I try to keep his memory alive,” she said.

‘It hits close to home’ Life changed forever for the Allemenos and James families on March 17, 1994, when 17-year-old Nick Allemenos, 13-year-old Lisa Allemenos and 23-year-old Chris James were found with their throats slashed in the Allemenos’ home in the Thistlewood neighborhood, an area that has since been annexed

by Carmel.

Investigators soon determined the deaths were a result of a robbery gone horribly wrong. Police arrested three men for the crimes: Raymond Adams, James Walls and Kofi Ajabu. Adams, who was accused by the other defendants of independently planning and carrying out the murders, pleaded guilty to the murders, while Walls and Ajabu were both convicted of murder at trial and effectively sentenced to life in prison.

Now retired, Allemenos splits his time between his Westfield home and Florida.

the only ones torn apart by the Carmel triple murders.

Of the three men convicted of the crime, Kofi Ajabu’s trial received the most attention, in part because his father was a leader of the Black Panther Militia and made death threats against prosecutors during his son’s trial.

According to Ajabu’s sister, Nzinga Harrison, the additional media attention instigated by her father led to her brother being “vilified” for actions beyond his control.

“With all of the media coverage, you wouldn’t know there were three defendants, but everyone knows my brother’s name,” said Harrison, a psychiatrist who lives in Atlanta.

Before the murders, Ajabu didn’t have any felonies on his adult criminal record and was a college student at Jackson State University in Mississippi.

The only defendant permitted to directly appeal his conviction, Ajabu has lost all of his appeals and is preparing to petition the governor for clemency. Harrison has started an online petition on Change.org to gather support for the request, which had more than 4,800 signatures as of March 11.

“Raymond Adams pulled a gun on me, and it was my expectation that I would die as well,” said Ajabu, who is at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility south of Terre Haute.

“Apparently, he chose otherwise. Apparently, he chose to drag me to prison with him, which is in its own way possibly worse.”

Allemenos said he is confident the governor would reject clemency for Ajabu, and that he and his co-defendants are where they belong.

“He can’t kiss his mother and can’t even come and go and watch TV when he wants to, and that’s fine,” Allemenos said. “I don’t want life to be easy for those three. I want them to think about what they did.”

Lita James also hopes the governor won’t give Ajabu a second chance at freedom, but personally she’s hoping to one day be able to forgive him and his co-defendants.

On March 8, nine legislators from the greater Hamilton County area took part in the most recent in a GOVERNMENT series of legislative breakfast panels presented by OneZone and the Hamilton County Business Issues Committee.

The panel discussion took place at Conner Prairie, where education issues specifically school safety, dominated the conversation. The panel featured State Sens. J.D. Ford (D-Indianapolis), John Ruckelshaus (RIndianapolis), Victoria Spartz (R-Noblesville) and Jim Buck (R-Kokomo) and State Reps.

As the former superintendent of Hamilton Heights School Corp., Cook discussed House Bill 1004.

The bill states that schools eligible for money from the secured safety fund must conduct a threat assessment by July 1, 2021, for each of its buildings before the school corporation can apply for a matching grant from the fund. Changes also allow funds received to be used for mental health and social/emotional wellness services for students. The bill also sets the requirement that at least one of the disaster drills conducted by each school must be an active-shooter drill and must be conducted within 90 days after the beginning of each semester.

Touching on school safety, Huston referred to the house’s budget bill (HB 1001).

“We included additional funding, several million dollars, for school safety, which can be used for the physical hardening of schools and mental health,” Huston said before moving on to the issue of teacher pay. “There’s been some debate about the

teacher pay issue and the legislature’s obligation to that. House Bill 1003 and the Republican caucus has said, appropriately, that we will provide district’s with money, but teacher pay should be decided at the local level based upon the factors that may be different.

“When I was on the school board at (Hamilton) Southeastern, we wanted things like smaller class sizes, but if you want smaller class sizes, you’re probably not going to be able to maximize teacher pay because you’re putting more people (on payroll),” Huston continued. “In (HB 1003), we want that to be a transparent process.

We want to set some guidelines for how those dollars are used. Everyone desires to pay teachers as much as possible, but the factors that determine that are decided locally.”

Goodrich discussed a bill (HB 1224) he authored that would establish an intergenerational mentor pilot program.

“As we look at school safety, I truly believe that this relationship with senior citizens and folks volunteering in our schools is a big deal,” he said.

Goodrich has previously said he was inspired to write the bill after the May 25, 2018 shooting at Noblesville West Middle School, when community members reached out to him looking for a way to help.

Through the pilot program, individuals 55 and older would work with students as a mentor to help develop life skills.

House Bills 1003, 1004 and 1224 have been passed by the House and, as of press time, are being reviews by the Senate’s Education and Career Development Committee.

The 2019 legislative session ends April 29.

Hamilton County reworks overdose response plan

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Hamilton County’s Community Opioid Prevention Effort has launched a quick response team, a OPIOID EPIDEMIC new approach to aiding members of the community battling addiction, specifically those revived from an overdose.

Local leaders and first responders gathered at a March 11 press conference at the Hamilton County Courthouse to announce the initiative.

“We hope to reduce opioid abuse, provide resources to patients that have experienced an opioid overdose and ultimately give them the treatment services needed for their recovery,” said Monica Greer, executive director of the Hamilton County Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs.

Effective immediately, the COPE Quick Response Team will initiate contact with overdose survivors within 24 to 48 hours of emergency treatment. A peer recovery specialist and team of health professionals will visit the individual to assess overall health and connect them with recovery options.

The team also will provide family members with a Narcan kit and training.

“I am so pleased to see these communities begin to address this from a prevention standpoint,” Westfield Mayor Andy Cook said. “The hard part about prevention is it’s not very sexy. It doesn’t make the frontpage news. But the good news is that it works.”

Whether illegal or prescribed, the misuse of opioid drugs such as heroin, fentanyl and hydrocodone, among others, can be deadly because they affect the brain’s ability to regulate breathing.

Although Hamilton County is among the wealthiest counties in Indiana, its residents are not immune to the effects of the nationwide opioid epidemic. The county had 38 confirmed overdose deaths in 2018 and 459 overdose calls to 911 dispatch.

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said part of being a top-notch city is ensuring all community members are provided the best services available.

“Addressing the various issues that come with opioid addiction will help all members of our community stay safer,” Brainard said.

ments, chosen because of their integrated health programs. The Bureau of Justice Assistance also awarded a countywide grant of $490,343 to expand the response team to the rest of Hamilton County in 2019.

COPE’s lynchpin is its connection to ASPIRE, a fully integrated health system that offers both health and social services and addresses behavioral health, primary care, substance-use disorders and more.

Barbara Scott, president and CEO of ASPIRE, said although the company employs physicians, psychologists, social workers and other professionals, research shows the best person to engage those experiencing addiction is someone who has been through it.

COPE Peer Recovery Specialist Ann Skinner plans to fill that role when establishing contact with overdose survivors. She said she has different legal boundaries than a physician or social worker.

“I can relate and tell someone my story,” Skinner said.

Sgt. Billy Adams of the Westfield Police Dept. said the department wants people experiencing addiction to know the police are there to help and not always to arrest them.

“We’re starting to learn that with the opioid epidemic being as unique as it is, the traditional tough-love approach of arrest and re-arrest is not always the answer and it’s not always working,” Adams said.

Bruce Frost, mobile integrated health coordinator for the Carmel Fire Dept. and coordinator of Carmel’s COPE Quick Response Team, said the county plans to delay drugrelated charges for those willing to enter the program. If they complete the program, it can be a mitigating factor in sentencing.

“The thing that’s so great about the Hamilton County market is we are so layered in our types of visitors,” Myers said. “It helps us be more resilient.”

Tourism continues to grow in state and county

Hamilton County, especially, is reaping the benefits of the state’s tourism growth, while simultaneously strategizing its own ways to attract guests.

FINANCIAL GAINS

An Economic Impact of Tourism study done by Rockport Analytics shows 80 million people visited Indiana destinations in 2017. The figure resulted in $12.7 billion of visitor spending. Out of every dollar spent on tourism, 72 cents stays in Indiana.

In Hamilton County, visitors added more than $820 million to the local economy, an 11.1 percent increase from 2016.

Brenda Myers, president and CEO of Visit Hamilton County, said new and expanded hotels have been a major contributor to overall tourism growth.

“There are more opportunities and places for people to stay,” Myers said. “Hotels are not the biggest expenditure that a person makes on trips.”

The tourism impact study found visitor spending was mostly on food, beverages and retail. In addition, tourism supported 11,553 Indiana jobs, including those at hotels, restaurants and attractions.

A LAYERED MARKET

According to Myers, Visit Hamilton County uses data reports to track hotel room sales and conducts advertising effectiveness studies twice annually. She said business travel, leisure and youth sports are major drivers for Hamilton County visitors. Top of mind for visitors are Conner Prairie, Carmel’s Center for the Performing Arts, Grand Park and the Monon Center. Art and music festivals, marathons, bike races and other unique events also draw visitors.

However, the variety that the county offers also can be found in just one city – Noblesville. Founded in the early 1800s, its pride and joy is its downtown square, which has had the same façades for nearly two centuries.

Less than 10 miles up Ind. 37, more than 750 acres of native Indiana has been preserved at Strawtown Koteewi park, which – in addition to its natural history center that educates on the area’s archaeology – offers miles of trails for horseback riding in addition to other activities such as fishing, canoeing, archery, snow tubing, climbing and ziplining “treetop trails.”

But overall, Myers said the county sees differing types of visitors depending on the day of the week. When Indianapolis hotel rooms are booked during a convention, northside

“When you look at the complexity of the market, it requires different channels of communication, different messages across multiple platforms,” Myers said. “What we’re doing is working, and that’s exciting.”

A Visit Hamilton County marketing campaign portraying the county as a weekend getaway destination earned the Indiana Tourism Association’s Best Leisure Marketing Campaign honor at a state tourism conference earlier this month.

Moreover, a spring and fall campaign that targeted the Chicago market generated $62 million in visitor spending in the county.

Myers said her staff works hard to stay on top of the latest digital campaigns. When Google launched Google Travel, the team decided to embrace it instead of thinking of it as a competitor. They spent time uploading Hamilton County information, focusing on what they wanted outsiders to see first. The result is a visually appealing and comprehensive list of the county’s attractions that pop up on a Google search.

“That’s just the kind of thing that my team amazes me about all the time,” Myers said. “They figure out how to position us in the market. That has really returned (results) for us.”

Visit Hamilton County has staff members available to teach business owners how to optimize their online visibility.

“It really helps us if everybody else is doing well, too,” Myers said.

The organization decided 15 years ago to invest in “key product,” or attractions and amenities throughout the county.

“Grand Park is one of the biggest things we invested in.

We’ve also helped Connor Prairie,” Myers said. “It’s really rewarding and exciting. Sometimes, these things take awhile to return, but when they do, it’s so much fun.”

HAMILTON COUTNY BY THE NUMBERS Of the $820.1 million spent in 2017 by visitors in direct tourism spending in the market, 34 percent was spent on food and beverage, 32 percent on retail, 16 percent on recreation and entertainment and 12 percent on lodging.

Out of every visitor dollar spent in 2017, approximately 72 cents stays in Indiana.

Tourism generated $70 million in total federal taxes and $98.6 million in total state and local taxes in 2017. Local taxes included $26.6 million in local property taxes.

Overall, local taxes generated by tourism positively impact $779 per household in the county on average.

Tourism spending increased 11.1 percent in 2017 from the year prior.

Tourism supported 11,553 jobs, in 2017 including those at hotels, restaurants and attractions.

Treasured trinkets

Not every decision is easy

Commentary by Terry Anker Those of us who have occasion or obligation to travel with some regularity are confronted with the routine dilemma of what, if anything, to bring family, friends and colleagues to express that they have been remembered during the absence.

Airports and road-side convenience stores are filled with trinkets and talismans proclaiming that the bearer has some connection to the place in question. T-shirts and snow globes are transported from coast-to-coast and hemisphereto-hemisphere bearing status and affection. As the years roll by, the collections build and shelves are filled with endless kitsch and ephemera.

Many years ago, an autobiographical magazine essay shared the story of a now middle-aged writer who’d been the benefactor of his own traveling father’s largesse. In this case, the dashing dad would bring home miniature containers of shampoo from each hotel of his travels for his thenelementary school-aged son. The youngster found charm in their tiny size. As time passed, he lost interest, even found contempt for the “cheap” tokens. But years after his father’s passing, he still had scores of the diminutive plastic bottles. They came to represent something more. They connected him, across the miles and the years, to these simple, perhaps silly, gifts from papa.

Certainly, grand gesture and great expense could express affection. But can the smallest kindness, executed without fail, and offered with great and earnest sincerity, become that which we treasure most?

Can you Trump my view?

Commentary by Danielle Wilson Several readers have accused me of making passive-aggressive comments about the president without providing HUMOR evidence. Fair enough. In their emails, they also resorted to pointing the finger at others rather than defending Trump, which, if having been a mother for 20 years has taught me anything, means they cannot. The real question for me is, and I’m not being trite here, how can anyone still support him as the moral leader of this nation?

I understand why Democrats do not. He goes against everything that more liberalminded people stand for – open immigration, gun control, carbon reduction, equitable access to education, to name a few (though he does spend like a Democrat! Per the CBO, the federal deficit is projected to increase by another $100 billion this year. That alone should have more fiscally minded Americans completely losing their shtick).

But how can anyone, particularly Republican females, continue to support a man who clearly does not respect women? I can chalk up his name-calling of Hillary Clinton as campaign mudslinging, but his total discount of Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony should have been a red flag to all Americans that Trump does not believe women are deserving of equal treatment.

And the fact that he refused to condemn the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, which ended with the murder of Heather Heyer, is reprehensible.

Disagree with me? Then defend him. I would love to learn that he is actually a good person.

Editor, I have been asked by several persons about my position as a member of the Noblesville School Board who sought a tax increase by referendum.

A closer look reveals the actions taken during my tenure certainly do not support the allegation that I am a spendthrift. The necessity for a referendum was a result of state legislation that directly impacted high-growth school corporations like Noblesville. The recent big developments, announced with much fanfare, have not resulted in lower taxes for our community.

Rather, we are paying more taxes (by way of the trash fee) and higher rates than our neighbors, looking strictly at the city rate.

This position has not made me particularly popular with the developers who are benefiting from these incentives. But I’m not representing them; I’m working to represent you. That is why my campaign is committed to not taking political contributions from any developers or contractors who work with the city.

I am a proud fiscal conservative, and I will work hard every day to see that every tax dollar is spent wisely. I ask for your support and your vote on May 7.

Recent news about the visionary plans to develop 58 miles of the White River between Hamilton GUEST COLUMN and Marion counties give me hope and excitement for our city’s future. For too long, we’ve tiptoed around the need to expand riverfront enhancement projects in downtown Noblesville to promote economic development and improve quality of life.

While most preferred no housing development along the riverway, high-end apartments or condos with a riverfront view in certain sections could be a great selling point to attract and retain the talent needed for economic development. Residential sections along the river, or even light commercial sites, could add to the safety and security of the developed recreational sections by establishing neighborhood crime-watch areas.

In the White River Vision Plan, the expert job sectors targeted for growth were identified as: life sciences, aerospace, transportation and industrial equipment, pharmaceuticals and technology. Noblesville could entertain the idea of expanding its down-

town toward the south and create space to attract these types of industries.

The Noblesville Parks and Recreation plan includes goals to create a riverfront master plan, and the city already owns about 25 to 30 percent of land within the floodplain.

Just like the multiple-jurisdiction river plan, Noblesville needs to decide how to manage the plan, how to implement it and how to pay for it. Noblesville city leaders need to consider other ideas from the community for its section of the waterway and encourage private investors to partner with the city to diversify its options.

As a longtime real estate developer in Noblesville, the first thing I do on any project is try to gain the support and blessing of nearby neighbors and business owners. For instance, in the 1990s, when I refurbished the Matteo’s building, I found the second floors in most of the downtown buildings were unoccupied or underutilized.

READERS’ VIEWS Bias crimes bill overdue Editor, For far too long, Indiana has been among a short list of states that have not made the appropriate and essential move of legislating a legitimate bias crimes bill. We have communities full of all kinds of people with varied backgrounds that all share the same commonality of wanting to live peacefully while raising families and contributing to the communities that we love without the fear of being attacked, or worse, simply because of who we are or what we believe in. At the very least, we want a law that gives our judicial system the ability to deter and aggressively punish those who would intimidate, do harm, or even kill anyone based on one’s race or sexual orientation or religious belief. People should not have to live with the fear of potentially being harmed just because of what makes them who they are.

Our legislators have dodged and dismissed this issue for years, but why? I have said this before, and I maintain this: The representatives that do not support a fullthroated hate crimes bill send the message that the most vulnerable and susceptible to hate crimes do not matter. It is like those segments of our citizenry do not exist, or the plight against them is just made up.

Just like many other areas of our country, Indiana has a history of racism and intimidation that has spanned from the birth of our statehood to this year. The Ku Klux Klan of Indiana was thought to be the strongest and most powerful sects of the national organization in the 1920s. They terrorized African-Americans, Jews and Catholics. In 2018, we witnessed Nazi-intimidating vandalism

of a Jewish synagogue in Carmel. When certain groups of people see nooses hanging or swastikas plastered in plain sight, particular feelings of fear and subjugation are conjured up within those people. Can you imagine living through moments like that? The truth is there are members of our communities who live through moments like that at different levels almost daily.

Those feelings are real, not made up. The groups that experience those feelings do matter. Not recognizing that goes against who we are. Hoosiers pride themselves as being accepting of others. Our communities value diversity and inclusion; we need our legislature to do the same thing. Indiana suffers when we do not promote these values. Our businesses are hindered in recruiting. Indiana universities may start to see their enrollments of non-resident students drop. The state that boasts that it is the “Crossroads of America” and is always actively courting major conventions and sporting events and major international companies to call Indiana home should do everything that it can to make every person who lives or visits here feel safe.

We all matter, but, unfortunately, there are negative forces that have infiltrated our society that target specific groups. These specific groups need meaningful legislative protection from hatred and bias crimes. Our nation has made strides but not every jurisdiction has made the worthwhile step of bias-crimes protection. Indiana remains one of those on that shameful and short list. We deserve better and this type of legislation is sorely overdue. We can do better.

No-list bias bill preferred Editor, Last year, state Sens. John Ruckelshaus and Greg Taylor were discussing support for a “Hate crimes” bill. This year, the bill has been heard in committee hearings and was set to go until an amendment was added deleting the “list” to a “bias” crime bill. I support the latter. In making a list of groups of people to protect from discrimination, most likely someone will be left out unless you add subtitles under the race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, age, gender identity and the LGBT. Did I get the list correct? Did I include everyone? See how

difficult this is? There should be one or two words in the bill to be a “catch-all” for all Hoosiers.

Now, speaking of hate, I have never experienced more hateful affiliations, associations, abuse, bullying, lies, threats, harassment, disrespect, hostility, prejudice, animosity, and the list goes on, toward our president. Our president is experiencing the true meaning of hate from a percentage of our American and non-American populace.

We should add his name to the list if our Indiana Legislature is going to vote on a “list.”

Red flags that could cause audits — Some red flags that trigger IRS audits may not be ones that you can, or want to, avoid—for instance, making a lot of money. The odds of an audit increase as your income goes up. IRS statistics for 2017 show that individuals with incomes between $200,000 and $1,000,000 and no Schedule C had an audit rate about double that for all other taxpayers. But there are ways to deal with many of the red flags—in part by taking a little extra care in preparing tax returns and being aware of the proper filing requirements, which are pretty clear in the instructions for each reporting form. Mallet finger: causes, symptoms, treatment

Commentary by Dr. Joseph Hui and Dr. Lori Cain

“I thought I just jammed it when the basketball hit the tip of my finger.” “I was just pulling the SPORTS MEDICINE sheets off the bed and felt a pop.”

“I believed I just sprained it and it would get better.” “The hammer hit my fingertip instead of the nail, and I thought I just smashed it and it would be fine in a few days.”

The above are all comments heard from patients that were later diagnosed with a mallet-finger injury. Mallet finger is an injury to the extensor tendon that straightens the end joint of your finger resulting in the inability to straighten the finger. It may be the result of tendon damage with no fracture present or you could have a fracture as a result of the ruptured tendon.

If you have an injury and find you’re unable to straighten the tip of your finger, you should seek medical assistance as soon as possible. The sooner you’re diagnosed and splinted in the appropriate position, the

better your potential to heal. If you have an injury that you suspect is mallet finger, first you should ice and elevate your hand to keep swelling down. Second, try to find something to splint your finger straight until you’re able to see an orthopedic physician or go to the emergency department.

Occupational therapy is often ordered post-diagnosis to fabricate a custom splint to place your finger in hyperextension to maximize healing potential. After healing, occupational therapy can help to provide education and/or home exercises to regain motion and functional strength.

If you can’t straighten the tip of your finger, have it checked out as soon as possible rather than just thinking it’s smashed, sprained or jammed. That is the key to this injury and to maximizing full use of your finger again.

Fishers doctor and son collaborate to write musical about emergency room

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com As an emergency room physician, Dr. Jeff Foy often thought the ER would be a perfect setting for a MUSICAL musical.

“I’m a big theater fan,” the Fishers resident said. “For years, I thought it would be a cool thing to do, but I didn’t have the musical talent to do it, so it was sort of just a pipe dream.”

That changed, however, as his son Jacob grew older.

“As Jacob became more proficient in writing music, I came to him with the idea, and he said, ‘Let’s do it,’” Foy said.

The father-son duo partnered to write the musical “Emergency.” It will be performed three times in the New York Theater Festival in August and is set for an off-Broadway run in 2020.

The two started writing when Jacob was a Fishers High School junior. Jacob, a 2017 FHS graduate, is majoring in music at Indiana University.

Jacob performed in FHS musicals and joined show choir his sophomore year at FHS. He is now a member of the IU Singing Hoosiers.

“Pretty much every step of the way was collaborative,” Jacob said. “We worked together on the book. He did most of the lyrics and I did the music. Even the rewrites of the songs was all a collaborative process.”

The first draft was completed in December 2016 and has changed a lot since then, Jacob said.

The musical was staged by IU students, who produced, directed and acted in the show at a black box theater at IU in the fall of 2018.

“We thought it was terrific,” Foy said.

“You can read it and read it, but nothing tells you how it is until you see it up on stage and see how people react. We learned a lot about the show from having people there watching it.”

“We liked it a lot, but we think we’ve made it better now,” Foy said There are two versions. One is two hours and the other is 90 minutes.

“It’s a comedy, but there are a lot of touching and sincere moments,” Foy said.

“When we wrote it, we wanted it to be in the vein of what we really see in the ER. Our days in the ER are happy and sad. We see life. We see death. We see people at their best and people at their worst. We see strange things and funny things. We wanted a little of that flavor in the show.”

Foy said they worked with Tony Awardwinning producer Ken Davenport for 15 months to help find the best route. Foy said they have flown to New York several times to meet with Davenport.

The 90-minute version was prepared for this summer’s festival. Foy said they will likely return to the two-hour version for

the off-Broadway run.

“The off-Broadway theaters are 100 to 499 seats, and several shows have gone to Broadway from off-Broadway, like ‘Avenue Q,’ ‘Jersey Boys’ and ‘Be More Chill,’” Jacob said. “So, it’s just a step below Broadway.”

Foy is fundraising and securing investors. He said they have hired a casting director, Daryl Eisenberg, and will hire a director and then put out a call for the cast.

The best part of the project is the times the father and son have shared.

“It couldn’t be better,” Foy said. “We get to spend hours writing, laughing and coming up with crazy ideas. Some of the fondest memories we have are the laughing sessions at 2 a.m. in a hotel room in New York because of a crazy idea we have.”

Bell’s love affair with pottery began after she saw the movie “Ghost.”

Bundy “I saw the movie and one day I decided I wanted to go down that route,” Bell said. “So, I took a pottery class at the Indianapolis Art Center. I just fell in love with the whole idea of taking a lump of clay and creating something.”

Shortly thereafter, her hobby became a business.

Blue Moon Pottery sells what Bell calls ‘things that bring a little bit of joy to everyday life.’ She sells functional pottery, including coffee mugs, tea pots and decor.

“I was born in Hamilton County,” he said.

“We’ve been making these pieces for 40 years. They’re decorative decoys. They’re called decoys because their shapes resemble real working decoys.”

Each duck is handcrafted with locally sourced wood. His pieces sell for anywhere from $150 to $250.

Bell and Bundy will have booths at the ninth annual Indiana Artisan Marketplace.

Taipei’s Grand Hotel Commentary by Don Knebel Taipei, Taiwan is a modern city of nearly 3 million people. One of its most popular hotels was designed to reflect a dramatic cultural change.

TRAVEL After Japan gained control of Taiwan from the Chinese in 1895, it set out to establish Japanese culture on the island. As one of its earliest efforts, it built a major Shinto shrine atop Jiantan Mountain in what is now Taipei. As the highest of an eventual 65 shrines, this shrine became known as the Taiwan Grand Shrine. After the defeat of Japan in World War II, Taiwan came under control of the Republic of China, with its capital in Beijing.

In 1949, after losing the Chinese Civil War, Chiang Kai-Shek led several hundred thousand of his soldiers and about 2 million refugees to Taiwan. He proclaimed Taipei to be the provisional capital of the Republic of China, which required an effort to change the city’s Japanese look and feel. In 1952, Chiang Kai-Shek’s government began building a major hotel on the site of the Taiwan

Grand Shrine. To better identify Taipei with Chinese culture, architects designed the hotel in the classic Chinese style. When finally completed in 1973, the Taipei Grand Hotel was the tallest building in Taipei and became host to many international conferences and dignitaries. Its 285-foot-high pagoda-inspired roof featured dragon heads on its corners, each pointing outwardly.

During a reconstruction project in 1995, a fire broke out on the hotel’s roof that could not be reached by fire hoses, leading to the collapse of the entire roof. When the hotel re-opened in 1998, the dragon heads, traditional symbols of rain and water, were turned inwardly to help protect the roof from future fires. The presidential suite, containing Chiang Kai-Chek’s desk and his wife’s dressing table, can be rented for about $5,000 a night.

Going on a coffee run for your coworkers sounds like a great idea, doesn’t it? Not only do you GRAMMAR GUY seem considerate of their caffeine needs, but you also offer to pay (usually), which makes you seem generous. You’re the hero of the office! But then you have to take down all their complicated orders, take the drinks away in one of those multi-cup holder things without spilling them all over your car (or your shirt), and then bring the correct drinks to everyone.

Seems like a hassle, doesn’t it? The next time you have this idea, just hand out $5 bills instead.

Everyone wants to be the office hero, but not everyone knows the right time to use “bring” or “take.” The problem is, both words have similar meanings. Both words are verbs that involve carrying something, whether literally or figuratively. “Bring” means to carry something along with you while “take” means to carry something away with you.

slice an onion from end to end, it will have a milder flavor than if you slice it across the middle. That’s because cutting an onion releases flavor compounds, and how you slice determines how many compounds are released. When you cut end to end, or with the grain, you cause less damage and release fewer compounds than when you slice through the middle. Slicing through the middle, or against the grain, causes a greater disruption and leaves you with a stronger, more pungent taste.

Take this advice to heart. Soon enough, your office mates will be bringing you piles of compliments on your journey up the corporate ladder.

It was in a jazzercise class that Pat had to face the music. Her knee was shot. That’s when she turned to Community’s Center for Joint Health.

After being given a what-to-expect guide and participating in the pre-op class, she had a total knee replacement. The sole purpose was to dance with her husband at their 50th anniversary party. Mission accomplished. Pat also is back to traveling and doing jazzercise. At age 75, her next goal is to outlive the 20 year warranty on that new titanium knee. Exceptional care. Simply delivered.
