Noblesville middle, high schools honored for STEM curriculum news@currentnoblesville.com Five Noblesville schools have been recognized for accessibility in offering science, technology, engineering EDUCATION and math opportunities for students.

Noblesville High School, East Middle School, West Middle School, North Elementary, Hinkle Creek Elementary and Stony Creek Elementary were named on a national list of Project Lead the Way Distinguished Schools.

Project Lead the Way is a nonprofit that specializes in offering STEM curriculum to schools nationwide. Noblesville Schools has implemented PLTW in all 10 of its schools, kindergarten through 12th grade. The district has 14 different PLTW courses for middle and high school students, ranging from robotics and biomedical to cybersecurity and aerospace engineering.

Noblesville East and West were the only middle schools in the state to receive the Distinguished School honor two consecutive years, and Noblesville High School was one of three high schools to be honored and was one of only two to be honored two consecutive years.

“We’re committed to providing engaging opportunities for STEM learning at all grade levels and are honored to be named to this

list of distinguished schools,” said Annetta Petty, Noblesville Schools’ executive director of learning. “This type of curriculum is important in developing skills for future educational opportunities, and ultimately for a wide range of in-demand career paths.”

The Distinguished School recognition honors schools committed to increasing student access, engagement and achievement in their PLTW STEM programs. To be eligible for the designation, schools have to offer a variety of PLTW STEM courses and have a significant portion of students participate, and students have to demonstrate mastery in the content and continue in the programming.

City earns 19th consecutive finance-reporting award news@currentnoblesville.com For the past 18 years, the City of Noblesville has been recognized for its achievements in financial RECOGNITION reporting, and this year is no different.

The city recently was awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its comprehenSpalding sive annual financial report.

The award is presented annually by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. It is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.

“The city received its first recognition in 1988,” Mayor John Ditslear stated. “I want to

thank former clerk-treasurer Janet S. Jaros and O.W. Krohn and Associates for helping to build the tradition started in 1999 and continued to this day by subsequent controllers Mike Hendricks and Jeff Spalding.”

A city’s comprehensive financial annual report is judged by a panel to meet the high standards of the program, which focuses on clear communication “The (annual report) is a Ditslear fair and accurate reporting of how much money the city has and its major financial obligations,” Spalding stated. “It provides transparency to financial markets and prospective developers and exists mainly to better position the city to attract private investment.”

Forest Park egg hunt set for April 13 news@currentnoblesville.com The annual Easter Egg Hunt at Forest park is set for April 13, the weekend before Easter.

EVENT The Noblesville Parks & Recreation Dept. and Hare Chevrolet each year presents the event that also features an appearance by the Easter Bunny, a DJ, bounce houses, emergency vehicle showcases from the Noblesville fire and police departments and more.

Taking place primarily at Forest Park’s Shelter 5, the event will kick off at 10 a.m. The egg hunt, which will have more than 12,000 eggs, begins at 11 a.m. Kids will be split into four age groups for the hunt. Registration isn’t required. All activities are free.

In keeping with tradition, the Noblesville Sunrisers Kiwanis Club also will host its pancake breakfast at Forest Park Inn from 8 to 10 a.m. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, juice, coffee and milk. Cost is $5 per person and all proceeds will benefit a children’s charity.

Conservation set for spring

By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com The Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District staff is bringing back its successful annual OUTDOOR program that benefits local homeowners and the environment.

With spring on the way, the HCSWCD is again selling rain barrels and native plant kits for yards.

The kit consist of plants that can naturally grow in the region. Each $120 kit contains 50 native plant plugs and are categorized by the area of the yard, including pollinator plants (good for bees and butterflies), rain plants (for wetter areas), prairie plants and plants for a shade garden. The kit also contains 10 species of native perennials that can fill an area of 50 to 150 square feet.

Rain barrels also are part of the spring sale and are available for pre-order for $75.

The repurposed, plastic barrels collect rainwater from a home’s roof and downspout.

The water is used for activities like garden watering, washing the car and more.

In peak summer months, a rain barrel can collect approximately 1,300 gallons of

I started reading it, it just intrigued me. I read through it the whole trip. From that point on, I loved constitutional law and various areas. Law has always intrigued me.

On the other side, in college, I took political science, history and math. Those were my minors. To me, history and law are always intertwined, so I pursued my career in law.

(With social work), I loved trying to help, but I also got to do that while being prosecutor and judge.”

Nation is a native of Beech Grove. He first arrived in Noblesville in 1976 after he began working in the area as a legal intern in the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office under then-prosecutor C. Donald Dawson during his last two years of law school (1974-75). From 1975 to 1977, he spent a short time working as a junior lawyer at a firm in Marion County, but in 1977, he returned to Hamilton County as a chief trial deputy.

From that point, his career took off. He was elected prosecutor in 1979. He served 16 years before seeking the Superior Court 1 bench, where he served 24 years as judge.

Nation, who retired Dec. 31, 2018, admits retirement has been different but he remains busy.

ful because it’s connected to Hazel Dell (Road) and we can walk all over.”

The Steven R. Nation Nature Trail will extend from downtown Atlanta through Cicero, east to Cumberland Road, then south to Potter’s Bridge Park in Noblesville. There also will be an arm of the trail that will connect to Strawtown Koteewi Park on 234th Street in Noblesville.

Hamilton County Commissioners are exploring ways to fund constructiuon of the trail.

“I am really encouraged to see the new trail because it will connect Noblesville all the way to Atlanta,” Nation said. “Twenty or 30 years ago, I don’t think people could’ve imagined it, but now with biking and the families in the area, they’re using these trails together.”

Family and children are popular conversation topics for Nation. He said his mother wanted him to become a social worker, which he says he tried for a couple of weeks but went back to law.

“The first time I remember (becoming interested in law), I was like 10 years old,” Nation said. “I read a book about negotiable instruments and contracts. It was just a little paperback book, and I was sitting at a train station. Mom and dad and myself were going to visit a friend in California. I got the book from the station, and when

Retired Judge Steve Nation has spent his career trying to help others, particularly children.

COVER STORY As a founder of the Hamilton County Youth Assistance Program, Nation also gave back in his courtroom, where he spent 24 years working on a variety of cases that came through Hamilton County Superior Court 1, ranging from mental health, adoptions, paternities, estates, contracts, torts, criminal and juvenile cases and other legal matters.

Earlier this year, Nation said he was shocked when he was recognized by Hamilton County government officials with the county’s highest honor – the Hamilton County Continental Award. He was even more shocked to learn that a trail project in the northern part of the county and Noblesville is to be named after him.

Both honors were unveiled at January’s State of the County address.

“To get me there, because this was the State of the County address, they had told me through my wife that the commissioners were going to get an award and they wanted me to be there for them,” Nation said. “I attended and was sitting there with the commissioners not thinking that much about it, and all of a sudden they said they wanted to give me the county’s Continental Award. Then, shortly after, (Hamilton County Commissioner) Mark (Heirbrandt) got up there and said when they were discussing (naming the trail), they decided they were going to name the trail after me.

“I was just very appreciative of that.

You do things not thinking of anything you might get, you just do it because the people needed it.”

Nation, 69, said he plans to make full use of the trail.

“One of the ways to decompress after a hard day (in court) was, my wife (Peggy) and myself, we would always walk at the end of the day,” said Nation, who will celebrate he and his wife’s 36th anniversary next month.

“Where we live, there’s a trail right behind us (Midland Trace Trail), and that’s wonder-

addition I would handle the 3,000 pending cases I had in front of me,” he said. “Now, I don’t have the 3,000 pending cases, but I’m still involved in mentoring programs. I’m also working with a couple people on figuring out how to help people with addictions, rather than just going to the criminal justice system. I’m also working with a group of people for retirement programs. A lot of people in our county are retired, but they don’t do anything.

“There are a lot of kids out there who need mentors, and there are a lot of people in our area in nursing homes that don’t have relatives anymore, so I’m working with a couple of people in a few local churches to try to bring all of that together to see how those groups of people can help each other.”

LETTER A cheap shot

New age question Commentary by Terry Anker Sam Adams, colorful mayor of Portland, Ore., is recorded as saying of his city, “This is where young people come to retire.”

Likely, he was addressing the rampant youth homeless challenges that confront his city and others in the Pacific Northwest. Still, he does point to an interesting sociological theme. At the turn of the most recent century, the phenomena was routinely called a failure to launch.

Now, much more accepted in the general population, it has morphed into a panoply of forms. This is not to say that some gap years, world tours and periods of self-discovery are not entirely warranted, but they are assuredly more common, in some cases expected, among a growing number of young adults.

Metal-detecting seniors strolling along the beach in South Florida might be seen in a T-shirt declaring that youth is wasted on the young.

In many ways, it makes sense. As we age, we become more self-assured and confident in our own skin.

The elderly are routinely measured as markedly happier and more content, even as they divest themselves of their many ambitions as unattainable due to an understanding of their own limitations or simply a chronological lack of runway. Is it possible that happiness correlates with low stress, which correlates with low self-expectations?

Likewise, could we claim that retirement is wasted on the elderly?

Could we match the retirementprovided spirit of freedom to an ambulatory and youthful body? One wonders, are these constraints societal or necessary in the evolution of humankind? If we give up early, can we still find satisfaction in a life well spent? Is permanent vacation or productive labor the key to fulfillment?

Editor, I am not religious, not anti-Catholic and (am) a reasonably left liberal. I am exceedingly annoyed by the latest act of artistic malpractice committed by your political cartoonist Tim Campbell (in his cartoon published March 5). I do not take lightly the molestation of children by anyone, let alone a certain denomination’s clergy. But for Campbell to use his quirky skill to highlight “scandals” by dumping trash on that religion, with a well-worn adage to highlight the drawing, is a massive sin of omission.

There are innumerable scandals in this country’s various, widespread administrations that Campbell ignored for a cheap shot. I suggest he work on his aim.

Stop the DST insanity Commentary by Danielle Wilson I’m starting a movement, people. End Daylight Savings Time now, before we tear ourselves to pieces! It’s archaic, HUMOR old-fashioned, out of date, antiquated, obsolete and redundant.

I mean, we do this every. Single. Spring.

And I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one still riding the struggle bus, 10 days in. My poor teenagers, bleary-eyed over their cereal, can’t even tell that it’s morning. “What’s happening, Mommy?” one whispers, a tear rolling down her cheek and into a bowl of Lucky Charms, to which she’s forgotten to add milk. “I don’t feel right.” Me, neither, sweetheart. Me, neither.

I’m going to bed at 8 p.m., waking at 4 a.m., and panicking every time I find a clock that I forgot to reset. The extra daylight also is messing with my internal ginge-ometer (trademark pending), which measures my genetic vulnerability as a redhead to sunshine. The needle has been frantically

oscillating between “You Can Go Outside Now, It’s Dark” and “No, Wait a Few More Minutes.” And, it will only get worse. Come June, I won’t be able to enjoy the glorious freedom of true night until way past reruns of “Jeopardy.”

Is this any way to live, I ask? Must we continue on blindly, pretending we haven’t sacrificed a precious hour of our existence to the ancient gods of a long-since demised, agrarian-based society? Have we no decency? Think of the children!

So join me, and together we can, nay, we will, end this DST madness (or at least force a switch to central time. Anyone with a map can see we should ally ourselves with fellow Midwesterners rather than East Coasters).

However, there has been a more subtle and long-lasting impact through emotional damage. I no longer feel comfortable placing outgoing mail in my mailbox at the end of our driveway. Instead, I drive my car to a secured U.S. post box.

It feels to me that our strong, reliable U.S. infrastructure has slowly started to decay and crumble. People have become numb to minor injustices and we have normalized unethical behavior. Whether it is political corruption, the president lying once again, celebrities committing sexual abuse, or just regular citizens who feel that lying, cheating and stealing have become the new norm, our society is sliding into moral decay. We have become numb and the symbols of light and truth that represent our judicial system have become a mockery. The president and the political leaders of our country are setting very poor examples that have encouraged the rationalization of dishonest behavior. I want to live in a society where I can trust our government institutions, and where truth and integrity still matter.

Editor, For 34 years, I have lived in the same house in Noblesville, and I have routinely picked up my mail from the black mailbox at the end of my driveway, appreciating and trusting in a great American institution – the United States Postal Service. In September 2018, that trust was violated by a neighbor when she unlawfully stole two envelopes that I had placed into my mailbox as outgoing mail. These two envelopes were of particular importance to me because they contained my quarterly estimated tax payments to the IRS and the Indiana Dept. of Revenue totaling $15,900. When I discovered that the envelopes were taken from my mailbox before the regular USPS truck came by, I was shocked and confused. Everything that a criminal would need to steal the identity of both my husband and myself was in those envelopes. I had only been trying to do my patriotic duty, but instead I ended up feeling foolish, violated and scared.

To date, the only direct financial damage to me has been a small service charge for the stop payment on my two checks.

Books & Brews coming to Noblesville

NEW BIZ The franchise store will be run by husband and wife Stephen and Jordan Fox at 13230 Harrell Pkwy., Suite 100, where Noodles & Company was formerly located.

The Foxes said they fell in love with Books & Brews approximately five years ago when the first location at 9402 Uptown Dr., Suite 1400, Indianapolis, first opened. They became regular customers.

“At that time, (Books & Brews CEO) Jason (Wuerfel) was usually the only one working, so we became fast pals,” Jordan said. “My husband Stephen and I have numerous years between us in the food and beverage industry (and) are so excited to leap into the world of owning and managing our own store.”

According to a statement from Books &

Brews, the Noblesville store will be a family friendly space with a variety of craft beers on tap in a fun, inviting environment. The menu will offer sandwiches, flatbreads and appetizers along with a full kids menu. The location will play host to a variety of adult and all-ages events.

Stephen is a manufacturing supervisor overseeing day-to-day operations of a custom steel fabrication shop and enjoys restoring his 1969 Mustang, playing guitar in a local ’90s rock band, riding his Harley, fishing and beer. Jordan works with a downtown Indy steakhouse, coordinating private events and filling the role of lead hostess.

She also choreographs local musicals and occasionally performs. They are parents to 1 1/2-year-old Layla Jean.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to add Stephen and Jordan to the Books & Brews team,” Wuerfel said. “Their new store is set up for success in a great location, and with their passion and drive, we look forward to seeing them grow it into a community gathering space for all in Noblesville.”

Five Barrington employees form musical group to entertain residents on Friday nights

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com The Barrington 5 are a versatile group of performers.

“We play everything from MUSIC The Beach Boys to The Beatles to The Everly Brothers to Jimmy Buffett,” Tim Fishburn said. “There is probably nothing we haven’t attempted to sing.”

What makes the group even more unique is all five are employees of The Barrington of Carmel, a senior living community, and are all members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

They formed the singing group approximately 15 months ago. The Barrington 5 performs each Friday night between 30 and 40 minutes at all four care levels of The Barrington, starting at the independent living level during social hour.

“We usually have 90 to 100 people show up there,” said Fishburn, resident services coordinator. “We then go to memory care, then assisted living and finish in skilled nursing.”

The other members of the group are Fishers residents David Hui Hui and Scott Buhler and Geist-area residents Sarah Lopez and Laura Haynie.

Haynie works in the elite concierge services department on the independent living side. Lopez is the lifestyles coordinator for memory care. Hui Hui and Buhler are drivers.

“The Barrington 5 is rewarding in a multitude of ways,” Lopez said. “I love connecting with the residents on this more personal level. It helps build community and family. I started working for The Barrington four years ago and it led me to bring in these four friends of mine, but I had no idea at the time what that would mean to me and the residents here. I had close relationships with residents and these friends before our group formed. But serving this way has made us all a strong family group that are there for each other and lift one another up. It has been a joy and blessing.”

Fishburn said the musical performances usually have a theme. For instance, a recent theme was beach songs, featuring songs by The Beach Boys and similar groups.

“They’ll choose after every song what they think the theme for that night is,” Fishburn said. “Usually, they guess it after two or three, unless we are being really cantankerous and making it really hard.

But not often will we do that.”

The group performed Disney songs for the memory care unit and Lopez dressed as Snow White.

Fishburn said everyone sings. Hui Hui, who is from Hawaii, plays the guitar.

“He’s extremely gifted in many ways,” Fishburn said. “He put himself through college (BYU-Hawaii) by singing at the Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii. He is incredible.”

Fishburn also can play guitar when Hui Hui isn’t available. There also is a karaoke box if needed to play in the background as the group sings.

“We all ended up at The Barrington one by one, and we were drawn here to have

this music ministry,” Fishburn said.

Lopez organized the Christmas program and The Barrington 5 provided the entertainment.

“She wrote it, choreographed the whole thing,” Fishburn said.

Fishburn said Hui Hui and Lopez occasionally perform as a duet called Serendipity.

“Once a quarter, they will put on a concert,” Fishburn said. “They did all songs from movies or plays. It was incredibly good. I emceed it and they did all the talent-side of it.”

Lopez suggested The Barrington as a place to work for Fishburn, who had turned his business, Midwest Sports Complex, over to his son.

“I just fell in love with it,” said Fishburn, who was originally hired as a driver.

Fishburn said the music ministry gets a number of requests from residents to sing at funerals.

“We have also been able to go to the residents’ apartments and sing happy birthday as well as sing them one or two of their favorite songs,” Fishburn said.

Oca opened in Sun King Spirits, 351 Monon Blvd. in Carmel in July 2018. Oca also has a restaurant inside Sun King Brewing, 135 N. College Ave., Indianapolis. There also is an Oca inside Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

“The episode Oca is in we are the only one from Indiana,” said Corrie Cook, libation and narration manager for Goose the Market.

The episode was filmed at the Indianapolis Oca in summer 2018.

Chef Chris Eley, who co-owns Oca with his, wife Mollie, is behind the counter crafting Oca’s specialties from start to finish like a cooking show. Eley demonstrates the restaurant’s custom recipes made by hand, from grinding and stuffing sausages to dressing every dish.

Oca’s specialties include slow-roasted top round beef, piccante meatballs, house-made salumi and vegetarian plates.

Westfield — Rob Amrhein, a guitarist and singer who performs a variety of songs from The Beatles to The Fray to Ed Sheehan, will perform from 3 to 6 p.m. March 23 at Urban Vines & Brewery, 303 E. 161st St. Noblesville — The Fourth Friday Young Musicians Series at Logan Street Sanctuary, 1274 Logan St., is set for 7 p.m. March 22.

2011 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port is a crowd-pleaser. It can be described as a classic. A smooth but meaty option with heaps of black cherry. It is a delicious mouthful and great with chocolate and caramel. A little pricey at $49 for the smaller, 375ml bottle.

2008 Dow’s Port, Quinta Senhora da Ribera presents a deep, dark color with spiced berries on the nose. The finish is at once bright, long and lingering. An intense and concentrated wine. Lovely with dark

chocolate ($75).

2016 Kopke Vintage Porto is another black beauty. Kopke is the oldest port house in the world, founded by a German diplomat in 1638. The hand-stenciled bottles stand out on a bar and add a sentimental nod to tradition. Very dark in color with aromas of black fruit in the glass and one of my favorite flavor combos: cocoa, violet and black pepper on the tongue. An aggressive mouthful, Kopke layers balance, flavor and tannin beautifully. Big, long finish. About $60 The aforementioned would be a hit with dark chocolate, caramel and fruit desserts but would work with dinner, too. Berry flavors can be a terrific match with savory fare like roasted meat, blue cheese and duck. Cheers.

Heavy metal medal — or mettle?

Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt I had a friend visit me the other day to tell me about a problem. I listened to her secret shame GRAMMAR GUY and consoled her.

Under the veil of anonymity, she agreed to allow me to use her issue, but not her real name. For our purposes, we’ll call her Gwenifer.

Gwenifer didn’t know whether to use the word “medal” or “metal” in an email she was typing. When I reminded her of the existence of “meddle” and “mettle,” her brain nearly exploded.

Medal, metal, meddle and mettle are examples of homophones. Homophones are a type of homonym that sound alike, have different meanings and also have different spellings.

Metal is a substance like gold, silver or copper that is usually hard and shiny.

Metals are malleable and have excellent thermal and electrical conductivity properties.

Confusingly, a “medal” is always made of metal. In the Olympics, the top three contestants win gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively. A medal is a flat-

tened piece of metal, often in the shape of a circle, to commemorate or honor someone.

Meddle is when you get all up in someone else’s business, to borrow from a common colloquialism. Meddle means getting involved in another person’s matters without (and often against) her consent.

Gwenifer’s nosy neighbor Nina often meddles when she gives Gwenifer unwelcome relationship advice.

What does “mettle” mean, and how did we get it? It simply means courage or fortitude. Mettle speaks of a brave person’s unwavering temperament. If it sounds similar to “metal,” that’s because mettle originated from a metaphorical version of metal.

I don’t fault folks like Gwenifer when they trip over these incredibly similar words; that’s why I didn’t even mention pedal, petal, peddle and pettle. Those are homophones for another day.

A brief history of Porvoo Commentary by Don Knebel For visitors to Helsinki, Finland, a drive to Porvoo takes an hour. It provides an opportunity to go back several hundred years.

Beginning in prehistory, TRAVEL members of the Tavastian tribe lived in the areas around the Porvoonjoki River in southern Finland. In the middle of the 13th century, Sweden, apparently encouraged by the Pope, launched military crusades to impose Christianity on the Tavastians, eventually gaining control of what is now Finland. Swedish immigrants established Porvoo as a trading town on the eastern bank of the Porvoonjoki River, near where it empties into the Gulf of Finland.

Porvoo’s residents built a small wooden church in their new town, which they rebuilt in the 15th century from stone, featuring a steep wooden roof and a separate bell tower. By the beginning of the 18th century, Sweden had become Lutheran. Porvoo, profiting from agricultural trade, had become the second-largest city in Finland, and Porvoo’s church had become a cathedral as the seat of the bishop for Finland’s Swedish-

speaking Lutherans. Near the end of the 18th century, Porvoo residents painted the wooden warehouses along the river red in anticipation of a visit by Swedish King Gustav III. In 1809, the Diet of Porvoo was convened in the town hall, and the resulting document transferring control of Finland from Sweden to Russia was signed that year in the Porvoo Cathedral.

Today, Porvoo is a modern city, with about 50,000 residents, a third of whom still speak Swedish. The Old Town, with a population of about 800, is set off from the rest of the city and its buildings meticulously maintained. Most of the still-red riverside warehouses serve as restaurants or private homes. The Old Town Hall is a museum, and the cathedral still welcomes worshippers.
