Judge Nation given county’s highest honor

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com During the Jan. 23 State of the County address, given by Hamilton County Commissioner Steve Dillinger, GOVERNMENT the Hamilton County Continental Award was presented to retired Judge Steve Nation.

The award is the highest honor that can be bestowed on Hamilton County residents.

“In the 60 years I have lived in Hamilton County, I don’t know of anyone more deserving of the county’s highest award more than my friend, Steve,” said Dillinger, president of the Hamilton County Commissioners. “His commitment to the service of this community is unprecedented.”

In addition to presenting the Continental Award, the commissioners also christened a new county trail that runs from Noblesville through Cicero, Arcadia and Atlanta. It is called the Steve R. Nation Nature Trail.

Nation was elected to the bench in 1995.

Prior to that, he served as the Hamilton County prosecutor for four terms. Nation has always been involved in the community, from coaching youth football to chairing funding drives for the Hamilton County United Way to serving as a board member for the Hamilton County Red Cross and Noblesville Boys & Girls Club.

gram, which he helped create. The program is designed to help at-risk students stay in school and out of the juvenile justice system.

Nation’s last day on the bench was Dec. 30, 2018.

The Continental Award is given only after a unanimous vote of the three Hamilton County Commissioners. Recipients must demonstrate a commitment to service for at least a decade as well as “an attitude of teamwork, a generosity of spirit, and a desire to selflessly support and celebrate the people and communities of Hamilton County.”

At its Jan. 29 meeting, members of the Noblesville Common Council presented its annual Stake in the Ground Award, CITY which recognizes city employees who go above and beyond their job responsibility. Each member of the council makes a nomination, and then all members vote on the award.

Noblesville Police Dept. Lt. Bruce Barnes is the recipient of the 2018 award. He is the public information officer for NPD who addressed media during and throughout the investigation of the May 25, 2018 Noblesville West Middle School shooting.

“Bruce was the public face speaking on this incident,” NPD Police Chief Kevin Jowitt said. “Bruce did an extraordinary job doing what he did, particularly because he had a son at the school and didn’t know his status until later in the day. Bruce went far beyond what anyone could expect in that situation. He does a fantastic job and we are lucky to have him.”

During his career, Barnes has served NPD in a variety of capacities, including shift supervisor, shift commander, SWAT team commander and honor guard commander.

He also has been in charge of recruiting for more than 10 years and created the NPD crime watch program. He also created and

According to data from Hamilton County Tourism, Dillinger said visitors to the county and overall spending in the county is up. In 2018, more than 4 million visitors spent approximately $820 million – an 11.1 percent increase from the previous year. More than $1.5 million hotel room nights were sold, and since 2005, nearly $10 million has been re-invested locally.

Dillinger delivers 30th annual address to local business community

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com For three decades, Hamilton County Commissioner Steve Dillinger has delivered the State of the County address to the local business community.

COVER STORY Last month, the Noblesville Chamber of Commerce again invited Dillinger to highlight accomplishments of 2018 and discuss 2019 projects to a record crowd of more than 400 people at Embassy Suites Conference Center in Noblesville.

Dillinger began by introducing new Sheriff Dennis Quakenbush and Superior Court 1 Judge Mike Casati. He also presented retired Judge Steve Nation with the Hamilton County Continental Award, the highest honor any citizen can receive from the county. He then addressed the topics of county finances, infrastructure, tourism and projects.

MONEY

Dillinger said the county is the richest in the state, with a $90,582 median household income. The state average is $52,182. The county also has a 5 percent poverty rate, compared to the state average of 14.6 percent. Moreover, the county’s median home value is $240,000, which is $110,000 lower than the state average. Dillinger also said the county has enjoyed a 12.2 percent growth rate in the past five years, which he attributes to a higher concentration of good-paying jobs, short commuting distances and connectivity to a major metropolitan area.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND ROADS

Dillinger spent much of his time talking about road projects around the county, primarily the Ind. 37 corridor project, which will convert the intersections to no-stoplight, dogbone-style roundabouts above the highway.

“You can’t fix (Ind.) 37 at 146th Street without fixing Allisonville Road,” Dillinger said. “It’s a good intersection, but problem is we just have too much traffic with our growth.

(With the fix), 146th Street will go under Allisonville Road.”

Construction on the intersection will begin in September 2020 and will be completed in fall 2021 at a cost of $22.6 million.

In Noblesville, Dillinger identified the extension and expansion of Pleasant Street as a major need.

“This is a joint project between the City of Noblesville and Hamilton County,” Dillinger said. “It will cross over the river, where we will be building a bridge. The intersection of Pleasant and Eighth streets is hopefully where we will start on this. This is one of the most important projects that we’ll do.”

Engineering is mostly complete, Dillinger said, and a study shows that with the completion of Phase 1, there will be a 29 percent reduction in traffic between Eighth Street and River Road.

In downtown Noblesville, the county is working with the city to widen the Logan Street bridge to create a pedestrian bridge. Construction began in October 2018 and will be complete in September at a cost of $4.3 million.

In addition to extra beds, the Hamilton County Jail expansion will add an interior recreation area, a classroom and a medical support area.

CAPITAL PROJECTS

The $13.5 million Hamilton County Jail expansion should be complete this month, Dillinger said. The project broke ground in September 2018 and adds 120 to 136 beds for an increase of inmates the county has seen since House Bill 1006 passed in 2016. The bill requires Level 6 felons to be incarcerated in the county in which their crime was committed, rather than be transferred to a larger prison. The jail’s current capacity is 294, and Dillinger said the inmate population is nearing 400.

Dillinger said the long-awaited expansion of the Hamilton County Government and Judicial Center is still on hold after bids came in higher than expected. He said the project will continue to be looked at.

“Last year, there was a lot of talk about (this project), but just like in any business, we had to prioritize,” Dillinger said. “We followed its design and did some utility work, but it’s on hold in the mean time.”

LETTER Our country can do much better

Commentary by Terry Anker “As we forgive them that trespass against us…” holds the line from one of the most often recited prayers of the modern era. Originally published in 1611, the 14-line, 70-word devotion encourages us to remember the simple rules of a civilized life. Remember that we are subservient to a higher power. Remember that food and security are not assured. Remember that we are frail and easily tempted to our own destruction and that vengeance benefits not us or those against whom we might seek it.

But in a world where many have replaced a Sunday morning reciting of the Lord’s Prayer with an endless watching of the Sunday political shows, our collective conscience seems to have moved from one of self-restraint to one of aggressive demands for retribution. Surely, if not retaliatory, the various talking heads seem to foment a sense of clannish entitlement: “We are wronged. You are taking my stuff/ dignity/position/whatever, and we will fight you to get it back.”

A well-respected local arts organization recently announced its intention to adhere to 50/50 by 2020 – a plan designed to reach “parity” in the arts. All voices, if worthy, should be heard. Still, if one is to understand the thinking, because there has been bias, real or perceived, in who is getting selected to volunteer, to exhibit, to evaluate, then we must consider an institutionalized system of bias to stop bias. An eye for an eye and all that thinking. Art has long been filtered by wealth and power. Is it possible that talent matters but only as a subset of what is allowed to be seen? Still, can we expect or hope that an institutionalized bias is the tool used to fix institutionalized bias?

Let snow, let it snow, let it snow Commentary by Danielle Wilson I survived the Polar Vortex of 2019! And what’s more, I was able to reflect on how far I’ve come as a mother.

HUMOR Remember the Snowpocalypse of 2014? For those of you still suffering from PTSD (Post-Traumatic Snow Disorder), recall that five years ago we had a winter break that was extended by essentially seven days thanks to a blizzard and record-low temps. I was literally trapped indoors with a moody 15-year-old, bickering twin 12-year olds and a precocious 9-year old for three full weeks. Each night, I would offer up several Hail Marys, burn incense and sacrifice a chicken cordon bleu in hopes that someone, somewhere, would get the schools open. Scrabble and breakfast for dinner can take you only so far before Legos start looking like potential weapons and one begins seriously considering a permanent move to Boca, sunburn and geriatrics be damned.

But no longer! With our oldest away at college and none of the rest emerging from hibernation until noon, at the earliest, snow days are now fun days. I anticipated with delight the dangerous wind chills and the icy roads that would keep us stuck at home by the fire with nothing to do but watch Netflix and eat cookie dough. I applauded when the two-hour delay became a cancellation, and I still had at least three hours to myself to clean the house, stalk Facebook and binge more cookie dough. Vortex schmortex. It was awesome.

So, to all you parents with young ones at home, I suppose I’m offering a warm light at the end of future Snowmageddon tunnels.

Editor, Much has been said and written recently regarding the dogs left in the frigid and dangerous cold in Arcadia. Current Indiana code does not question the bad decision of this owner. Therefore, Hamilton County law enforcement must adhere to the current law and ordinances. I understand that – to a point.

So, where do we go from here? I believe, as many others believe, that it is time for Hamilton County to review and upgrade law enforcement mandates regarding the humane care of both pets and livestock in our county. It is amazing to me that Marion County has stricter humane ordinances than our county. I am not surprised that the state has taken a lax stance on these issues, but our county can do much better, in my opinion.

In recent conversation with a Hamilton County elected official, I feel hopeful that there is a strong relationship between county officials and the Humane Society for Hamilton County, and I look forward to real changes for those who cannot speak for themselves. As President Abraham Lincoln advised us, “I care not for a man’s religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it.”

VR comes to Noblesville

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@yoaurecurrent.com A new virtual reality business has opened at Hamilton Town Center, a first for Hamilton County.

Derezzed VR was NOW OPEN launched last month by 24-year-old Colin Snyder, who said he first became interested in the business of virtual reality during his time at Ball State.

“I was following the development of the Oculus, one of the first VR headsets,” Snyder said. “I had the idea back (in 2013) that it might be a worthwhile investment to put some of these pieces of technology together and provide a place and a platform for people to be able to use it because it’s not really affordable as an at-home service.”

Snyder opened the 1,300-square-foot facility at 13904 Town Center Blvd., Suite 600, near Englin’s Shoe Rack and Claire’s. The space is home to seven VR bays.

Derezzed VR offers a membership program for frequent visitors, but regular prices are based on time slots - $15 for 15 minutes, $25 for 30 minutes and $40 for an hour.

“We have five room-scale bays, and essentially the room-scale bays are sectioned

off and each have about 70 square feet available for the patrons, and we’re completely wireless in those areas, so they can move around easily in the virtual environment,” Snyder said. “We also have two stationary VR bays set up, so those offer things like exploring nature, roller coaster roads, exploring the Titanic, things of that nature.”

Two more bays are planned for spring and will be light simulators and racing simulators.

Derezzed VR is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Carmel Community Players production takes a lyrical look at relationships

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com The four-person cast of “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” hastens through rapid character THEATER development.

“You don’t have arc of character throughout the show, but you have that in every scene,” actress Brenna Whitaker said.

The Noblesville resident appears in the Carmel Community Players’ nine performances of the musical on weekends from Feb. 22 to March 10 at The Cat, 245 Veterans Way, Carmel. The musical examines relationships from first dates to dealing with marriage, child rearing, empty nests and beyond.

“I did this show for the first time at Mud Creek, maybe 10 or 15 years ago,” Whitaker said. “A few years after that I did it at Myers Dinner Theatre in Hillsboro. Every character plays multiple parts. We’re a different person in every scene. After this show I will have done every women’s part.

The fun thing about doing it multiple times is I was at a different stage in life each time I did it. The first time it resonated because I was single and dating. Now, I’m married with a young son, so the second act is what is resonating now.”

Westfield resident Dee Timi suggested staging the musical to CCP, having directed it in Joplin, Mo., in 2008 when she lived there.

“It’s that show that makes you laugh, makes you cry,” Timi said. “No matter what stage of life you’re in, it’s fun.”

Libby Buck, an Indianapolis resident, saw the musical for the first time in New York on a field trip with her Valparaiso High School musical theater class.

“I’ve been obsessed with it ever since,” Buck said.

But she hasn’t seen it since.

“This has been one of my bucket-list shows, so it’s been really exciting to participate,” she said. “The most challenging part is recalling what your character is from scene to scene. When I saw it in high

school, I just thought it was funny. Now, I’ve been married for 10 years and have two kids of my own, so a lot of the second act makes more sense to me now.”

Buck and the two male cast members, Jonathan Scoble, Carmel, and Christian Condra, Indianapolis, are making their CCP debuts.

“Playing different characters is the thrill,” Scoble said. “Playing different characters are, to me, what is the most fun about acting. It’s hilarious. The script drew me in pretty quickly.”

Scoble said he got a call that CCP was looking for men because not many showed up to the auditions.

“Christian and I have been working together for a couple of shows now and we want to work together more,” Scoble said.

Scoble, who is single, said he identifies

with several of the characters.

“The trials and tribulations of dating, don’t we all have a story?” Scoble said.

“From beginning to end, you can see interactions between men and women, which is fascinating.”

The experience is new for Condra.

“I’ve always done shows that are one consistent story, and this is a bunch of different skits,” Condra said. “It’s almost ‘SNL, the Musical,’ that’s what stood out to me. It runs the range of different acting styles.”

Noblesville resident Sandy Baetzhold is the musical director.

The book and lyrics are by Joe DiPietro and the music is by Jimmy Roberts. The musical played off-Broadway for more than nine years before being released to community theaters.

The salad was fresh, filling and had a unique twist with the combination of ingredients.

Blueprint for Improvement: White-hot kitchen remodel in Indianapolis Commentary by Larry Greene

Our team transformed this ho-hum kitchen into a true centerpiece of the home.

1. The homeowners chose a gorgeous gray for the lower cabinets and white for the upper cabinets.

2. Bulkheads over the cabinets were removed and replaced with taller cabinetry that not only provides more storage, but makes the room seem taller.

3. A quartz countertop was installed, and the tile backsplash was taken all the way to the ceiling to give the illusion of a taller ceiling.

4. Instead of two smaller pantries, the design gave the homeowners one larger, more functional pantry space and a new counter for meal prep.
