State Road 37 project announcement – Fishers and surrounding areas should expect a big announcement regarding the future of State Road 37. On Dec. 10 Fishers and Hamilton County officials will announce plans to develop roundabouts to replace several stoplights at intersections along the highway between 126th and 146th Street. Once completed, the highway is proposed to resemble the Keystone Parkway design in Carmel.

Details are still being finalized but the project is expected to cost approximately $124 million.

“Where’s Amy?” … I was excited to attend the 23rd annual Reynolds free light display in Fishers. The Reynolds Farm Equipment store has been a fixture in the Fishers community for many years and people drive from all over the county just to see the display, which centers around a large white cross. Joe Reynolds, 94, the oldest living Reynolds sibling, was at the festivity to “flip the switch” among the many generations of family and friends that attended. The colorful lights and displays quickly illuminated the sky, and soon after, car loads of families entered the new magical layout that runs east to west off Ind. 37 just south of 126th Street on the Reynolds’ spacious property.

Set a clear New Year’s vision

Be careful what you wish for

It’s that time of year again. In between shopping, wrapSELF-IMPROVEMENT ping and eating, you’ll begin to look back at 2015 and think about what you can do differently in 2016.

The next thing you know, it’s the middle of March, and you’re knee deep into 50-plus-hour weeks responding to the challenges of 2016.

One evening on your drive home from the office, you’ll quietly proclaim, “Next year I’ll plan.”

Don’t let that happen this year. There’s still plenty of time. Here’s a handful of simple strategies to get you started.

First, start off by defining what success looks like to you. If you don’t, you’ll end up building a vision that’s designed to impress other people. Here’s my definition - “The extent to which I use my unique abilities, strengthen meaningful relationships and enjoy the journey.”

Next, start brainstorming a list of accomplishments you’d like to achieve in the upcoming year. Don’t worry if these are good/bad goals. Just get everything on a piece of paper.

I’d utilize the following categories to stay organized – financial relationships, health/fitness, professional and fun.

Now that you’ve got some ideas, it’s time to make certain that you can actually tell if the goal was achieved in 2016. In other words, review each item on your list and make sure that it is measurable. For example, if you wrote down “get in shape” you’re going to need to define exactly what that means in as much detail as possible.

Finally, you should narrow this list down to the five that are the most important because a list of 13 will never get accomplished, and it will only frustrate you ensuring that you never go through this process again. To do this, ask yourself a handful of questions about each goal including: will it utilize my unique abilities? Is it realistic? Will I enjoy/appreciate the journey? Will the journey help me to develop valuable skills?

Once you have the top five, write them on a note card, and look at it every day.

It may seem too simple to work, but like most valuable lessons, the easier the better.

The left hemisphere of your brain processes language and the right hemisphere processes concepts. They work together CHANGE to create concepts and express them verbally. The language we use to talk about the changes we want in life can alter our concepts without our awareness. For example, weight loss, the number one New Year’s resolution in America, expresses an idea that we want to weigh less.

Weight loss is an expression of pounds on a scale. However, often the concept we are really after is being happier, healthier, more fit or having a smaller waistline. Losing weight doesn’t guarantee any of those things. A person can lose weight and still not a have the six-pack abs they want or be any healthier or happier. A client who came to me to lose weight once asked me, after reducing over 40 pounds, why isn’t this working? Clearly weight loss wasn’t the real goal.

Have you ever thought about losing something? Often when something is lost we go in search of it and hope to find it. So by using that language are we setting ourselves up to find the weight we have lost? Many people who choose weight loss only end up gaining it back and often with a few extra pounds.

A person can lose weight and still not a have the six-pack abs they want or be any healthier or happier.

That is why, in part, diets don’t work. They are focused on the wrong concept.

When we set a weight loss goal, we create an end point in our quest. What happens when we achieve our goal? We move on to the next goal. Once we have run the marathon, it is over. Not so with health and wellness or with maintaining a healthy weight.

Being healthy is a lifestyle, not a goal to be achieved and left behind.

The next time you want to make a change, make sure you understand what it is that you really want, and then turn that concept into language that truly represents your goal. Otherwise you could find yourself asking, “Why isn’t this working?”

With so many people relying on you for information and COVER STORY answers, it may seem like a heavy burden to carry, but for Lawrence City Clerk Kathleen Walton, she says she wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t change her job for the world. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I like that I provide a lot of information, because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m like the information center,â&#x20AC;? Walton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everybody calls me for this and that, and of course now Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to get all new councilors in January, and they will all rely on me because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m the continuity thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always been here that knows whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going on in the parliamentary procedures.â&#x20AC;?

Growing up in a military family, Walton spent a lot of time moving around until moving to Lawrence in 1963. Being born in Japan of an American father and an English mother, Walton has quite the diverse background; something she says helps her in her current position as the only elected city clerk in Lawrence city history. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just get along with people, and maybe itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my military background,â&#x20AC;? Walton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve grown up with people all my life. You move every three years, and you get used to that new type of environment. Sometimes people have trouble getting along with people, and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no reason for that.â&#x20AC;?

Now in her fourth term as Lawrence City Clerk, Walton goes above and beyond her mandated role to help serve the people of Lawrence. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love serving my community, and I help everybody no matter what,â&#x20AC;? Walton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I go way out of the scope of what this job is because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m totally involved 100 percent.â&#x20AC;?

While working at Union Central Bank, Walton originally became involved with her local government after being asked to participate as a committeeman. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I was at the bank, somebody asked me to be a precinct committeeman, which I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even know what that meant then, and once I got into that role and going and helping out with elections, I really enjoyed it,â&#x20AC;? Walton said.

Being a math whiz in college, Walton eventually got involved with payroll of the city. After being trained by the at-the-time clerk-treasurer, she began getting involved with state and international municipal organizations. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I became part of payroll and part of the budget process for the city,â&#x20AC;? Walton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The clerk treasurer took me under her wing. Eventually I became the deputy clerk treasurer, then started joining all these statewide organizations; the Indiana League of Municipal Treasurers, the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns, the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. I went to all their conferences and went to State Board of Accounts School.â&#x20AC;?

As Lawrence made the move from a third-class city to a second-class, Walton took on the new role as city clerk. As a second-class city, the role of clerktreasurer is split into a hired controller and a city clerk. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I assumed that role in January of 2004,â&#x20AC;? Walton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had the task of splitting up what a clerk does versus the financial side, so I brought all the ordinancesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; books down here and the minutes for every board and commissions (meeting); I consolidated all those records.â&#x20AC;?

As the city clerk, Walton likes to think of herself as a facilitator behind the scenes making sure everyone is following the rules. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I consider myself like Switzerland and sort of the liaison between the council and the administration,â&#x20AC;? Walton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a vote, and they canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pound on me for influence for a vote. I just do the work and work every day and work hard and people, I think, appreciate that. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why a lot of people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what a clerk does because we just quietly do things and keep everything done.â&#x20AC;?

Walton loves to serve the people of Lawrence through her role as city clerk and continues to go above and beyond to get the job done. She says she doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see herself slowing down anytime soon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At some point Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll learn to say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;no,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; but I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see that happening because I enjoy it, and if I can be of help to people then I might as well,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Ring in 2016 at Palladium

We know from independent marketplace research that arts, entertainment and dining are of upmost importance to our readers. The easy button

The office supply giant Staples is well into an advertising run extolling the ease with which we can order, restock and manage our need for paper, pens and printer ink refills. In the campaign, various users are imagined to be confronted with an office supply dilemma and they push a big red “easy” button wherein the problem is instantly resolved and the challenge is successfully confronted. The ads have proven so successful that the retailer is now offering mock-ups of the easy button at its stores. And, they are selling quite well.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have such a device? Whenever we are confronted with the travails of ordinary adult life, we could simply push the button and all would be made simple. Sipping a cup of coffee while reviewing this column would have required extraordinary effort only a few generations ago. Getting the coffee was almost impossible. Then, heating it required the collection of wood and the tending of the fire.

Today, we push a button and Nespresso delivers a perfect, steaming cup from coffee delivered to our doors. We could call it the easy button.

If life can be tamed from chaos to sublime by the mere press of finger, what other annoyances might we relegate to buttondom?

Is the television remote control a device that we can use to remove us from irritating or offensive humans? Can we click “delete” on our computers to retire email that complicates or mires our lives? Is it possible that the “easy” button is already there but that we don’t make use of it?

Sure, an office supplier cannot solve all of our problems with an imaginary button.

But, it can show us that the solution to many of our worries is already available if we simply know to take action.

Low expectations, my friends. That’s what we all need to have heading into the Christmas festivities if we are HUMOR to survive the next few weeks.

Don’t plan the perfect dinner, don’t anticipate a healthy household and don’t count on content children. You can hope for the best, sure, but only if you expect the worst will you guarantee yourself a satisfactory holiday season.

Thanksgiving provided a good test site for my new underachieving mantra. Because the Wilson family six-pack would be staying with my parents, I knew I wouldn’t be sleeping much and that downtime would be at a premium. I also understood that the 2015 turkey feast would comprise of an unusual hodge-podge of relatives, including an 86-year-old ex-dancer on oxygen, my sister’s new boyfriend, and two sets of uncles and aunts whom I only see once a year. And, just to make things a little more interesting, none of my other three sisters would be there with their spouses to provide conversation buffering and/or assistance.

Needless to say, my expectations of an ideal Thanksgiving were extremely low. So when my youngest’s cold turned into a marathon fever and cough fest, it was honestly no big deal. When my dad and sister cheated on our pledge to wait and see “Mockingjay” together, I rolled with it. And when Aunt Doris the Dancer regaled us with tales of teaching ballroom lessons after working all day at the American Tobacco Company, I was extraordinarily entertained. Overall, a pretty nice Thanksgiving.

With Christmas and New Year’s approaching, I am now prepping myself for more illness, disappointed teenagers, dog intestinal issues and at least one person over-imbibing at some party. I’m also planning on rain, a power outage, a minimum of two tree disasters and an impressive argument with my husband Doo. Maybe I’ll get lucky this year and none of these potential holiday derailments will come to fruition. But if they do, they won’t be ruining my holidays. Why? Because I’m expecting the worst, and therefore can only be pleasantly surprised. I suggest you do the same. Peace out.

The Hot Sardines bring unique jazz blend to New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Eve

By Mark Ambrogi Â&#x201C; \PaZ/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ The Hot Sardines feature their own spin on hot jazz and jazz standards. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have a love affair with all COVER the pop music from the first half of the last century,â&#x20AC;? singer Elizabeth Bougerol said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We play jazz that goes back as early as the 1910s and goes as late as the 1950s. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s old music but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re definitely playing it in 2015.â&#x20AC;?

Bougerol, known as Miz Elizabeth, and Evan â&#x20AC;&#x153;Babsâ&#x20AC;? Palazzo are the co-founders of the group. The Hot Sardines will be the featured performers at New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Eve at the Palladium. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This music has a lot of spirit and there is something a little magical about New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Eve,â&#x20AC;? Bougerol said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It will be fun way to ring in 2016. We believe music should move you and we have a lot of love for the early days of jazz and American popular song. Those are the two points on the map. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re playing music and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re on a stage. The tap dancer is not just a percussionist. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a visual part of the show. You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hear this kind of jazz too often any more. This is sort of our Valentine to the songs of that era and the joy of playing them live for audience.â&#x20AC;&#x153; Bougerol said their live performances are always evolving. Â â&#x20AC;&#x153;You are never going to play the same song (the same way) twice,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is a lot of fertile ground between 1900 and 1950 so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve definitely evolved in terms of adding more repertoire and bigger arrangements.

Bougerol and Palazzo met at a jazz jam in 2007 that was advertised on Craigslist. Bougerol said they connected musically right away with many of the same loves. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There were a lot of the same people that we musically admired,â&#x20AC;? Bougerol said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We never intended to start a band. Each of us was just trying to find one other person to

explore this love of music with.â&#x20AC;?

Bourgerol and Palazzo were not professional musicians at the time. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He had taught himself piano, and I sang mostly in the shower,â&#x20AC;? Bougerol said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had done one or two high school musicals, but beyond that, I never sang outside my apartment.â&#x20AC;?

The other members of the band were all trained musicians. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We learn so much from them every day,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the 17th show for Wims and 22nd for Shepard, who calls it â&#x20AC;&#x153;our Christmas tradition.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kenny is one of my oldest and dearest friends,â&#x20AC;? said Wims, an Indianapolis resident. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve known him since I was 19 years old. It is such a special show for me.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;A Beef & Boards Christmasâ&#x20AC;? will run through Dec. 23. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I started doing the show, I lived in New York, and I wanted an excuse to come home for the holidays because I grew up in Indianapolis,â&#x20AC;? said Shepard, a Fishers resident. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I moved back here 12 years ago. Shopping for a tailgater

By Joe Drozda and Bob Bley This is the season when we begin to struggle with our shopping lists and invitations, aggravated by Decemberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s iffy weather. We need to remind ourselves there are people in our lives who are worth this trouble, and people to whom we are worth the same. Think about that tailgater on your list. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re writing about the guy/gal on your list with a smile almost as broad as his or her heart. The one who is generous to a fault, making sure every guest and even occasional passersby gets something to eat and drink.

There are two ways to shop for a real tailgater. First is the practical way, which is finding some piece of equipment you think he or she wants.

The second way to shop is to buy something extravagant that can be enjoyed by any tailgater at any time. I always like the chocolate candy items that are a bit unusual but useful at any time of the year, especially Christmas. Sure one might see them at a tailgate party, but they are great at a Christmas or New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s party or any gathering when one wants to serve something special.

Easy Bourbon Balls (Submitted by a reader from Kentucky) Ingredients: Â&#x201C; 1 lb. vanilla wafers, crushed Â&#x201C; 2 cups walnuts, chopped Â&#x201C; 2 tbs. cocoa Â&#x201C; 2 cups confectionersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; sugar Â&#x201C; 3 tbs. light corn syrup Â&#x201C; 4 oz. bourbon Preparation: Mix together crushed wafers, chopped nuts, cocoa and sugar. In a separate bowl mix corn syrup and bourbon together, then gradually add to crumb mixture. Shape into balls the size of small walnuts and roll in confectionersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; sugar, then chill overnight. This recipe will yield up to five dozen balls - proceed with caution.

Put lid on, bring rice to a simmer and cook until water evaporates, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat, and let it rest for 15 minutes. Fluff with a fork and serve.

Brussels’ Fountain of Youth Commentary by Don Knebel

Many first-time visitors to Brussels, Belgium, immediately seek out its most famous symbol, a statue named “ManTRAVEL neken Pis,” Dutch for “little boy pee.” This irreverent two-foot-tall statue may explain why Brussels is often called the “Capital of Europe.”

No one knows when the first statue of a naked boy urinating into a basin was first erected two blocks southwest of Brussels’ Gothic town hall. References to a stone statue in that location appear as early as 1450. Numerous legends attempt to explain why such a statue would have been erected, some claiming a little boy relieving himself miraculously saved the city. What is known is that a local sculptor replicated the stone statue in bronze in 1619.

In the ensuing nearly 400 years, Manneken Pis has been stolen repeatedly, most recently in the 1960s, after which the recovered statue was placed in a Brussels museum and a replica installed in its place. After Manneken Pis was stolen by a French soldier in 1745, King Louis XV made the little statue a knight and required passing French soldiers to salute.

some given to him by visiting heads of state.

The costumes, displayed in the museum along with the original statue, include a sequenced jump suit aping Elvis Presley. When Manneken Pis dons his French officer’s uniform, French soldiers are still expected to salute.

Many believe the major European powers selected Brussels, with fewer than 180,000 resi-

dents, as the home of both the European Union and NATO because of the light-heartedness and self-deprecation reflected in Manneken Pis. Recognizing the extraordinary popularity of their naughty little guy, residents of Brussels have recently erected two other small statues employing the same theme – Jeanneke-Pis, a little girl, and Zinneke Pis, a dog.
