Spark!Fishers begins June 22

By Jonathan Matthes jonathan@youarecurrent.com After a one-year hiatus, Spark!Fishers returns June 22 with a new five-day format.

Two concerts, a 5K run/walk, a car show, parade, street fair and a fireworks display highlight the festivities.

“It provides people the opportunity to be a part of a community event, even if maybe, that weekend, they are out of town,” Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness said. “They can hit the 5K, or if they can’t make the 5K that weekend they can make the fireworks and the parade.”

SPARK!FISHERS SCHEDULE June 22, Community Concert, 7 to 9 p.m.

Kicking off Spark!Fishers will be the Midtown Madmen, who play music centered on the 1950s and 1960s. The concert is part of the city’s Tuesday night concert series.

The concert will be at the Nickel Plate Amphitheater. Admission is free. Outside alcohol is not allowed but can be purchased on-site. Outside food, chairs and blankets are welcomed and encouraged.

June 23, Half Pint Half K, 6:30 p.m.; 5K Walk/Run, 7 p.m.

The two races will happen on a weeknight for the first time. The 5K route is through downtown Fishers. The race is planned to start after rush hour.

The Half Pint Half K has a $10 entrance fee. Registration for the 5K, for those younger than 12, is $25. The adult entrance fee is $35. The start/finish line is at 6 Municipal Dr. Packets for runners can be picked up from noon to 7 p.m. June 22 at the Fishers YMCA, 9012 E. 126th St., Fishers, and at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater from 5 to 6:30 p.m. June 23.

years ago on the week before Spark!Fishers, alongside the farmers market, but this year it will be included in the festivities.

“We had 65 cars show up,” Fishers Parks and Recreation Director Sarah Sandquist said.

“It made sense to us to grow this event.”

The car count for this year’s event is expected to grow, and there is room for 80 vehicles on the property. The car displays will be paired with an arts focused display.

The city is partnering with the Fishers Arts Council to put together the Arts crawl component.

“We’ll have a variety of artists on-site and food trucks,” Sandquist said.

Approximately 30 artists are expected to attend, including the featured artist Gary Dausch, who will bring his mobile 28-foot gallery. Dausch specializes in original art, limited edition prints and apparel.

June 25, Spin Doctors concert, 8 to 10 p.m.

The concert will be held at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater and is free to the public. The band had a couple of top 20 hits in the early 1990s.

“When we heard the Spin Doctors were available, we jumped on it,” Sandquist said.

Like the Tuesday concert, outside alcohol is not allowed but can be purchased on-site.

Outside food, chairs and blankets are welcomed and encouraged.

June 26, Street Fair, 3 to 10 p.m.; parade, 6 p.m.; fireworks 10 p.m. continue deliver to a different 25 percent of the community. “From 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. we’ll shut down the circle. We’ll have 150 vendors. There will be artist and artesian tents. We’ll have a Ferris wheel out on 116th St. When you get to the top, you’ll be able to see down into the (under construction pedestrian) tunnel,” Sandquist said.

There will be three different musical stages, a kids zone and a teen zone.

At 6 p.m., the parade begins and proceeds from Lantern Road, west along Municipal Drive and down the western edge of the central green before heading west on 116th Street and north on Holland Drive before ending at Ellipse Parkway.

“I’ve been in the car before, but my family is so big now that they’d have to have some sort of larger vehicle, anyway, so I’ll be walking in the parade with the fire and police chiefs.”

At 10 p.m., the fireworks begin. They will be launched from Holland Park and will be visible from the central green. Holland Park will be unavailable for viewing because it will be closed and secured.

Election security, voter confidence priorities for secretary of state

areas where Indiana’s handling of elections should change?

Holli Sullivan became Indiana’s 62nd secretary of state in March, replacing Connie Lawson after her resignation.

POLITICS The Evansville resident and married mother of three previously served as a state representative from 2014 until her appointment.

Sullivan, a Republican who recently announced that she plans to run in the 2022 election to maintain Sullivan her position, stopped by Hamilton County on June 8 to visit with local business leaders and share about initiatives under way in her office.

She also stopped in Carmel for an interview with Current.

We had an extremely successful election in 2020. We had the highest voter turnout since 1992. We had changes due to dates and pandemic and processes that we have never had to face before at a local level, and we had no recounts, no fraud and no problems. So, for us, we need to maintain what we have, which is a good place to be.

Every county (election official) I’ve talked to completely agrees there are always ways in which we can help the process by educating Hoosiers on securities that already are in place, and we’ll do that. We’ll partner with local communities to increase messaging. That’s extremely important right now, because there is a lot of noise coming in from other states about how they run their elections. They’re not as transparent, not as secure as Indiana, and that puts seeds of doubt in voter confidence.

What is your top priority as secretary of state?

To continue to have transparent, free and secure elections run by the state. It’s very important that we think toward the future.

We have a runway this year because we don’t have an election, and I can spend time getting to know each of the county election officers and their successes from 2020, but also plan with them the future infrastructure needed.

I also want to continue the momentum in the Indiana business services division. The INBiz portal has 70 online services, but it’s time to meet with users of those services and business owners to see what we can do next to get government out of the way of business and allow it to grow.

Election fraud has been a big topic nationwide in the last year. Do you see

Not much has changed in Indiana election law in recent years, but has the national discussion led to decreased voter confidence here?

We had a strong turnout (in 2020), but post that turnout there’s been all that news, so I think the confidence has been shaken. When you redirect the conversations back to the Hoosier experience of voting in our state, you see it’s not about the Indiana experience.

Your office has begun sending postcards to Hoosier voters to help keep voter lists up to date. How does this process work?

Voter list maintenance is a federal requirement, and Indiana does it really well.

It’s a white postcard, and we’re trying to get the word out that it’s legitimate.

Spartz proposes bill to increase child-care facilities

By Jonathan Matthes jonathan@youarecurrent.com U.S. Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.) has co-authored a bill with Rep. Adrian Smith (R-Neb.) to give states more POLITICS leeway to improve and increase the number of childcare facilities, with an emphasis on rural areas.

Spartz’s 5th District represents all of Hamilton County.

“As a working mom of two young girls, I understand the importance of child-care, especially when it comes to engaging more women in the workforce. This is a very important issue for our state given the significant labor shortages that are impacting businesses,” Spartz stated in a media release.

H.R. 3797, or the Increasing Access to Safe Child Care Facilities Act of 2021, was introduced June 8. If passed, it would make subgrants available to “eligible entities (seeking) to improve and increase the avail-

The priority for the subgrants would go to, but not exclusively, new child-care facilities in rural communities. The bill also would increase child-care options for working families.

“Many federal government programs come with extensive strings, which make them very expensive and inefficient. This bill allows more flexibility to the states to improve effectiveness and provide a greater benefit to Hoosiers,” Spartz stated.

Fishers teen dives onto U.S. Olympic team

By Jonathan Matthes jonathan@youarecurrent.com Fishers teen Tyler Downs won the 3-meter springboard competition at the June 13 U.S. Olympic Diving Trials at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis to earn a trip to OLYMPICS the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Downs, 17, defeated a pair of former Olympians, David Boudia of Noblesville and Michael Hixon, to secure one of the two spots on the men’s Olympic diving team.

Andrew Capobianco of Indiana University finished second to earn the other spot.

Downs scored 1333.75 points, 14.35 more points than Capobianco and 18.8 more than Boudia, a three-time Olympian. The Olympic Games begin July 23 and conclude Aug. 8.

“I had no expectations going into this competition, just to have fun and that’s what I did. I dove my best and made it onto the Olympic team,” Downs said on NBC after securing his spot on Team USA. Downs, originally from St. Louis, moved to Fishers for training purposes. He will continue his diving career in the fall at Purdue University, where Boudia will be one of his coaches.

Boudia is a four-time Olympic medalist.

New apartment complex brings a luxurious feel to Lawrence

By Jonathan Matthes jonathan@youarecurrent.com Lawrence’s first luxury apartment complex, The Otis at Fort Ben, is open.

Local dignitaries and developers gathered June 10 for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the project, which includes 261 apartments in three buildings at 9310 Otis Ave. “A couple years ago, when I was first introduced to this project and I saw it on paper for the first time, I was taken aback. I hadn’t seen anything quite like this coming into the City of Lawrence in my lifetime,” Lawrence Mayor Steve Collier said at the grand opening. “And I’ve lived here since 1964.”

The $31 million development was built by Indianapolis-based Cityscape Residential and will be managed by PRAXM Management. Cityscape Residential founder and managing partner James Thomas was drawn to the project for a variety of reasons and incorporated multiuse elements into the development. The Otis has a saltwater pool, a Fort Ben-themed Instagram photo wall, conference room space, fitness centers, grilling pits with an herbal wall, a pet spa and a bicycle repair station.

The Otis at Fort Ben is among the newest complements to the Fort Benjamin Harrison redevelopment area, which includes restaurants, a state park, cultural campus and the future Fort Ben branch of the Indianapolis Public Library nearby.

‘IT’S BETTER THAN I IMAGINED’

“None of those amenities were in Carmel when we started there 20 years ago, but you could see the raw pieces, and that felt a lot like what (Lawrence) will be.

We said, ‘That looks like a Cityscape community,’” Thomas said. “Honestly, it’s so crisp, it’s better than I imagined. That sounds cheesy but it’s true.”

Cityscape was founded by Thomas in 2013. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Thomas was the executive vice president of AMLI Residential Properties Trust. During his tenure, the firm created some of the earlier redevelopments in Carmel, like the building that houses Muldoon’s and Bazbeaux Pizza along West Main Street and the veterans reflecting pond.

“At the time, there was no mixed-use there, just us.

The Monon Trail wasn’t even there yet,” Thomas said. “We love walkable, multi-use environments. It doesn’t have to be multiuse buildings, but stuff is near each other, and that’s what we saw here.”

Another aspect that appealed to Thomas — and laid the foundation for The Otis to be built — was what he called “historical fabric.” The military history of the Fort Ben area was incorporated into the design. Many of the walls in the main lobby of Building 1 are painted in hues of Army greens and beige. Scaling one of the walls in-

It’s a common space where residents can relax. “Residents can get out of their units and take a break from the day,” Jennifer Sewell with Cityscape said.

The Otis pool is 3 1/2 feet deep with some lounging chairs in a couple shallowshelf areas outside the Leasing and Amenities Center. It also is a saltwater pool.

side the lobby are a dozen green, gold and beige female mountain climber figurines. Keeping with the military theme, the figurines were originally going to be toy soldiers, but a late change switched out the figures.

Some of the thirdfloor rooms have wrap-around balconies that offer views of the Fort Ben area.

ON THE SAME PAGE

Per the scope of the project, Cityscape did not have to envision Lawrence with a concept like The Otis. The city and the Fort Ben Reuse Authority already had a similar idea in place for the land that Cityscape developed.

“Having a partner like the Fort Ben Reuse Authority and the City of Lawrence, who ultimately share the same constructive vision, is very important, too. That way, everyone is working together for the same outcome,” said Derrick Cranor, a partner at Cityscape.

When the Army close Fort Benjamin Harrison in 1995, the Fort Ben Reuse Authority was established to chart a future for the area. The master plan was created in 2006, and in the original drawings a red-tinted map marked the area where The Otis would eventually be built as a site for a village center.”

Jeff Vest, a longtime Lawrence resident and president of the Reuse Authority board, applauds the finished product.

“When we started out, and none of this was here, I never could have imagined something like this,” Vest said during the grand-opening ceremony.

One of the more unique features inside The Otis at Fort Ben is a giftwrapping station inside the Leasing and Amenities Center. “It’s for any last-minute gifts that you need to wrap,” Sewell said.

Rooms inside The Otis can be rented for between $1,010 to $2,050 a month.

I can’t hear you

Commentary by Terry Anker “What is wrong with people?” the widow exclaimed. “I am so disheartened right now.” A prequalified couple had agreed to purchase the home she’d shared with her departed husband but had entreated for a short-term lease to make the timing for their move a bit more convenient. The widow kindly agreed. The couple again asked for an extension of the closing date. This time, the reasons given seemed either too vague or entirely implausible. Still, the accommodating widow accommodated.

Naturally, as the newest closing date approached, the couple said they needed still more time.

With this, the widow pushed back, and the couple admitted that they had overshot their budget in the last few months and were now short about 20 percent of the capital needed. As the sob story unfolded, they asked the widow to let them pay her, over time, for the gap. Offended by her resistance, they felt entitled to remind her that she “must have” seen some insurance money. Since she, they assumed, had cash in her pocket, she had an ethical obligation to share some of it with them.

This story is all too common. Today’s general lack of empathy, coupled with a loss of any fear of social constraint, inevitably leads to grotesque self-centeredness. Many of us are confronted with those who say, and believe, that we are obligated to make their lives easier by making ours more difficult. “Getting even is not only justified,” they might argue, “it is a moral duty.” The problem with the summary change of thousands of years of human experience is that much of the way we live is good — and that not all change is. The law, the social contract and basic common sense are mostly right. Are there inequities? Probably.

Still, aren’t rules better than chaos?

Mine ears have heard the coming of the horror of old age … Yes, I know those aren’t the exact lyrics, but I’m a bit whack-a-doodle, friends. Thanks to some impressive wax build-up and subsequent ear infection, I’ve lost all hearing on my left side and about 50 percent on my right. And because said wax is rock solid, I’m having to “soften” it for four days with peroxide drops before it can be scraped clear. So, basically, I’ve been stumbling around in my own quiet little bubble, head titled at an awkward angle, constantly yelling “What?” to anyone and everyone.

My husband and relatively new hearing-aid wearer Doo finds this to be a hilarious moment of marital karma. “Now you know how it feels!” has become his annoying refrain. In my defense, I’ve always been sympathetic to Doo’s deafness, which he’s suffered since childhood. What frustrated me and why I teased him was that he refused to do anything about it, purely for vanity’s sake.

But admittedly, until this week, I hadn’t fully understood how debilitating and alienating not being able to hear is.

Bike rides, phone calls, watching TV and multiple-people conversations became real challenges that left me frustrated and overwhelmed. And the physical disorientation resulted in more stubbed toes and bruised thighs than when I was nine-months pregnant. With twins.

The point is, I’ve had a glimpse into my geriatric future, and I don’t like it.

I’ve come to terms with my deteriorating eyesight; I even look good with my 1.50 purple readers. But I’m not ready to yield mine ears to the horrors of old age.

A shell of my pet-loving self Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Several evenings a week, the neighbors on our cul-de-sac gather with their dogs in the driveway across the street HUMOR from us. There is Max, Pace, Gus, Louie, Ella, Dain and Lucy.

These are the dogs’ names. I’m very bad with human names, but I know which dog belongs to whom. Occasionally, the group includes children and visiting grandchildren.

Mary Ellen and I have no grandchildren and we no longer have a dog, but we do have a cat (Mary Ellen’s, really) who would not do well in these otherwise civilized gatherings.

I needed a pet of my own. I called my friends Marty and John in New Palestine. Marty is a turtle whisperer who has been rehabbing turtles and enjoying them as pets for 20 years. Because she often relocates rescued turtles, Marty happily provided me with three red-eared sliders who would soon reside in the pond a few hundred yards from our house. I named them Stan, Ollie and Baby Huey. I carefully loaded them into the car and headed home.

The neighbor kids met me at the water’s edge, giggling with delight (you can see a short video on my Facebook page).

Once a day (sometimes twice) … OK, occasionally three times, I visit my turtles and spread joy (or whatever is in that can of food Marty gave me) across the pond. Redeared sliders don’t need to surface for air very often, which means that I sometimes

have to stand on the shore for 90 minutes scanning the water to confirm that all three of my adoptees are OK. I eagerly wait for each head to pop up, then toss more food in that direction. I whistle when I feed them, hoping they will connect my signal with their nourishment. The neighbors can probably see me from their deck, and I’m sure it appears to them like I am looking at my reflection in the water and then whistling at the image. Not true. I am retired from TV and am no longer that narcissistic.

I’m excited about another new addition to my family. While driving home the other day, I saw in the road a turtle about the size of a dinner plate, and he was clearly in danger of being – DICK WOLFSIE squashed by the next oncoming vehicle. I swerved onto a side street, dashed from my car, scooped him up and deposited him on my front seat. I named him Buster, after my favorite silent star, Buster Keaton. I don’t think he’ll ever say much.

Now, I have four new pets. Of course, turtles cannot join us for our evening puppy parties, but I know they are happy swimming in the pond behind our neighbors’ house. I forget our neighbors’ names, but their dog’s name is Chewy.

Brewing up coffee business at home

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com In a world where employees are beginning to work from home and coffee shops are becoming the next hot thing, Westfield residents Liz and Adam NEW BIZ Duvall are embracing the best of both worlds.

The Duvalls co-own Viewpoint Roasters, a small-batch, home-based coffee roaster.

“Basically what that means is, we essentially roast to order,” Liz said. “When someone places an order with us online, it’s not coming from a stock of coffee. We are making their order right then and we do it out of our garage.” \The Duvalls set up a workshop in their garage during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We seemed to buy into what a lot of other people did as well when they were at home and thought, ‘We’ve got time,’” Liz said. “My husband has been roasting coffee for a few years for family and close friends, and it was a fun hobby.”

The Duvalls do not add oils or additives to the coffee, and the beans they use are single-origin.

“I think a lot of people don’t know that coffee doesn’t just come off the earth roasted. It is actually surprising the amount of people who don’t realize you take coffee in an undrinkable state and it comes in a green form,” Liz said.

Liz said the company is family oriented and recently conducted a promotion called Community Coffee, with proceeds from coffee purchases donated to local nonprofits. All the coffee bags were designed by the Duvalls’ 5-year-old son, Graham.

“So, there were some very unique ones, some very artsy ones,” Liz said with a laugh. “We are excited to be a part of the community. We’ve met a lot of really great small business owners, and we are excited to just get more into the community as we live here longer and longer.”

PEDIATRICS The Carmel resident recently opened Little Village Pediatrics, a concierge-style direct primary care physician’s office, at 12740 Meeting House Rd., in Carmel’s Village of West Clay.

“I think it’s a better Davidson way to do medicine or I wouldn’t be doing it,” said Davidson, who plans to cap the number of patients at 200.

“The whole point is to get back to the patient/physician relationship and having the direct access to your doctor when needed.”

Davidson said in larger health systems there is a wall between doctor and patient.

“It’s hard to get access to them,” Davidson said. “The sheer number of patients that are to be seen and how many you have to take care of is just overwhelming, so there has to be so many middlemen because you can’t take care of 2,000 people.

It’s just impossible to do that. The membership concept is much, much smaller numbers, so you don’t have all those middlemen.

And you’re not battling insurance about getting certain things covered.”

Davidson said, especially in pediatrics, insurance can dictate when a well-check visit can take place.

“That can create problems when kids are needing sports physicals,” she said.

“We can do multiple well-checks in a year.

It doesn’t have to be one well-check visit that you are unloading every concern and problem you have about your kid into one visit and also a 15-minute time slot. When you work for a big health system, every well visit is a 15-minute time slot.”

Davidson said most of her appointments are an hour long.

Davidson, who attended Indiana University as an undergraduate and then University of Pikeville (Ky.) School of Osteopathic Medicine, started her residency at Riley Hospital for Children in 2009. Davidson grew up in Geist and graduated from Lawrence Central High School in 2001.

Zionsville sisters share stage in ‘Sound of Music’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Performing as one of the von Trapp children in “The Sound of Music” has a true family feel for Claire Kauffman.

“One of my favorite things about this musical is THEATER getting to be a part of the von Trapp family,” Claire said. “Being one out of the seven siblings and getting to be in this with my sister, Cynthia, is not only fun on stage but also off stage. Playing Louisa is so different than any other role I have played, and her sneaky and upbeat personality is so fun to experiment with, too.”

Cynthia Kauffman plays Liesl in the Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre production of “The Sound of Music,” which will run from June 24 to Aug. 15.

Cynthia graduated from Zionsville Community High School in 2019 and is majoring in music theater at Indiana University. Claire will be a ZCHS freshman in the fall.

“This role will for sure be one that I will always look back on,” Claire said. “I’m not sure when I will get to be in another show with my sister. Playing Louisa in such a well-known show, with Cynthia and other friends in the cast, will be very memorable for me.”

Claire said the main challenge of playing Louisa is being part of the big family.

“The von Trapp children have different personalities, and finding those things that make Louisa stand out is a part of the whole acting process,” Claire said. “Along with making Louisa her own unique character, I take on different harmonies in multiple songs. One of the trickiest songs for me has been ‘The Sound of Music.’ Perfecting those harmonies will make the song sound as best as it can.”

Claire’s favorite number is “The Lonely Goatherd.”

“I love the fun, uptempo movements,” Claire said. “You really get a glimpse of how enjoyable it is to be on stage. Everything about the number is all about storytelling, and I

think that makes it exciting to perform and watch.”

This is the first time either sister has appeared in the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.

“This is a dream role, so getting to play Liesl has been such a joy so far,” Cynthia said. “What I love about ‘The Sound of Music’ is the fact that it is such a classic and fun for all ages. I love Liesl’s free spirit and her confidence as a young woman and getting to portray that on stage.”

Cynthia said her favorite numbers are “Sixteen going on Seventeen” and “So Long, Farewell.”

“I have loved being able to do some partner dancing but also dancing with the von Trapp children,” she said. “I also enjoy learning the choreography to these iconic numbers.”

Cynthia said one challenge she faces playing Liesl is, although she is mature, she is still a child.

“Being able to find small moments where her naive and adolescent instincts can shine through is important to the story,” Cynthia said.

Cynthia has had a few opportunities to act since the COVID-19 pandemic caused a shutdown in March 2020.

“Since I am a performance major in college, it is pretty much my life,” Cynthia said.

“Over the last year, I have had small performing opportunities at school, but being back in a real theater and on a stage makes me happier than ever.”

Clare got the opportunity to perform in a Zionsville Middle School play earlier this year.

“Life feels pretty boring without live theater,” Claire said. “When something you usually do every day gets canceled, it makes you realize how important it is. I got back in the mode of performing back in March when I got to start rehearsals for my school musical, ‘Singin’ in the Rain.’

“Playing Lina Lamont was a great way to get back in the swing of things.”

Main St., Westfield What to get: Full rack of ribs Price: $20.99 Anna’s take: If you haven’t visited Big Hoffa’s Smokehouse since it expanded into 8,000 square feet of space, you need to put it on your to-do list ASAP. I grew up in Westfield, and until recently, Big Hoffa’s occupied a small space on the south side of the property on Ind. 32. But owner Adam Hoffman recently expanded into the rest of the building, and now Big Hoffa’s space matches its taste — big.

I sampled several items, and my favorite thing about Big Hoffa’s (other than the barbecue) is the incredibly large menu that offers more than just barbecue. I tried The Amendment ($9.99), which is beef brisket on a bed of jasmine rice with teriyaki glaze, homemade giardiniera (which has 37 ingredients!), cilantro, onions and spicy mayo.

Big Hoffa’s biggest sellers, which are fries loaded with macaroni and cheese, baked beans, pulled pork, barbecue sauce and ranch. I tried two sandwiches — the Butcher’s Bill ($8.49) with chicken, buffalo and ranch sauce, macaroni and cheese and fries on a garlic butter bun — and the Buccaneer ($8.49), Hoffa’s flagship sandwich with pork, coleslaw, fries and ranch on a garlic butter bun. I also tried sides of fries and macaroni and cheese, brisket and ribs. My favorite item was probably the ribs. Even as someone who’s not much of a dry rub person (I prefer saucy wings and barbecue), I completely bypassed the barbecue sauce and ate the ribs with no toppings, they were that delicious. For a beverage, be sure to try the sassafras sweet tea, which has a mild root beer flavor.
