Sikh Resolution recognizes contributions

Aaron Freeman introduced the Sikh Resolution, which recfaith ognizes the contributions of American Sikhs in the U.S. and the state of Indiana. Sikhs are devotees of Sikhism, a monotheistic religion founded in India’s Punjab Province in the 15th century by Guru Nanak.

April 20 was National Sikh Day. “In the Midwest, the Sikh community has been growing in the last decade and a half. By 2006, there were only 10-20 Sikh families in Indiana.

Now, there are estimated to be 10,000 Sikh residents in Indiana. We are the fastest-growing business community, in the Indiana Senate, having 3,500 businesses,” said Gurinder Singh Khalsa, founder of Sikhs Political Action Committee.

The group wants to promote greater awareness of the Sikh culture.

“We launched last year. We want sustainable awareness,” Singh Khalsa said. “Fifteen million students graduate high school every year in America. We want Sikhs in the history books.

Sikh culture is not part of the history curriculum.

We want to give back to this nation by serving in the U.S. military and in public offices. This will be another way of making people aware.”

Since 2011, Sikhs have been the target of hate crimes and misidentified as radical Muslims.

At its April 19 meeting, the Hoosier Heritage Port Authority unanimously approved a request for proposals for an operator of the Nickel Plate railroad. travel A review committee for the proposals would be made up of five board members, excluding Mike Obergfell because he is the president, and one member appointed by each of the three owners, Fishers, Noblesville and Hamilton County, to create a committee of eight people.

Proposals must be received by June 13 and scoring will begin July 1. Scores will be brought to Obergfell to review and recommendations. The railroad owners have the opportunity to interview the top-scoring proposers.

Obergfell said the plan is to make the final award in July at the HHPA meeting or, if interviews run through July, hold a special meeting in August.

At the end of the meeting, the HHPA board fielded questions from the public.

One person asked about the state fair train, and Obergfell said there would be no state fair train in 2017.

Previously, the railroad was operated by the Indiana Transportation Museum.

Girls on the Run participants to graduate

By Renee Larr • news@currentinfishers.com The fifth-annual Girls on the Run 5K will be held May 13 at Saxony. Girls on the Run of Central Indiana serves celebration Hamilton, Boone, Hancock, Tippecanoe and Hendricks counties. Its mission is to empower girls in grades three through eight by instilling self-esteem.

“Our goal is to make them joyful, healthy and happy by taking to them through a curriculum. We have different lessons every time they meet,” Executive Director Lorri Brune said. “They’re talking about bullying, body image, self-esteem and at the same time they’re training for a 5K run. They’re always doing something in these lessons.”

Girls meet two times a week for 75 minutes for 10 weeks.

“We ask schools to get involved. We have volunteer coaches that work with the girls.

Many of the coaches are school teachers or people within the school. They’re the ones who volunteer to coach,” Brune said.

The run will not only be a test of the girls’ physical abilities but a graduation party of sorts.

“We want the run to be a celebration of

them completing the program, not just accomplishing being able to do a 5K,” Brune said. “Our program is divided into three sections. They learn about themselves. They learn about their team around them. They also learn about their community. They also do a community service project at the end of the season. It’s a true 5K celebration.”

The day will include food, music and fun activities for the girls.

“All the girls wear the No. 1 because we want them all to know each of them are just as important as the other. We want them to know it’s important to be part of your community and give back to your community,” Brune said.

On New Year's Eve 2010, two Coptic Christian churches in Alexandria, Egypt were bombed, killing 23 people. faith On Palm Sunday of this month, two other Coptic churches in Egypt were bombed, killing nearly 50 worshippers, with ISIS claiming responsibility.

And In 2015 in Libya, ISIS kidnapped and beheaded 21 Coptic Christians for their faith.

The Coptic church has its roots in persecution, having begun when Christians fled the Roman Empire in the third century when Diocletian reigned down torture, terror and persecution. As a result, Christians fled across the border to Egypt, where they have remained to this day. It is a Christian church with a very long history.

The remarkable thing about the Coptic church is not its teaching on martyrdom, but on forgiveness. In spite of the current persecution, the Coptics have come to be known for their radical forgiveness, even of those whose brutality seems to have

no limits. As a result, even their persecutors have come to not only respect them for their strength in forgiveness but also want to know more about this Jesus that inspires them to display such love.

Imagine if Christians worldwide were equally as known for their love and forgiveness. Would the world see Christ and his love? Would they know that forgiveness is not weakness but strength?

When I was a child I remember singing at camp, “They will know we are Christians by our love.� My prayer for the church is that someday soon, we shall again be known for our love and forgiveness and the clarity of our devotion to Jesus.

Barb and Jim Austin committed to helping Lawrence Township schools

Barb Austin came by her love for Lawrence Township Schools cover story naturally.

However, the 1978 Lawrence Central High School graduate said there was no master plan for she and her husband Jim to raise their children in Lawrence Township. It’s just been a very happy coincidence.

“We selected this area long before we had kids,” said Barb, who lives in Geist.

“When we realized we were in the boundary of the very schools I went to, that was a bonus.”

When her oldest daughter, Alexa, was 2 1/2 years old, Barb gave up her sales career and concentrated on raising their two daughters and helping the schools.

“Volunteering and being involved has been my ‘job’ for the last 17 years,” Barb said. “I treat those commitments with the same attention to detail as I did in my professional life.”

Barb serves on the board of directors at the Lawrence Township School Foundation.

“We believe schools are the foundation of the community,” Barb said. “We try to find ways to fundraise, classroom help, whatever was needed to make a difference.

I was in sales and (Jim) has always been in development and marketing.”

Alexa, a 2016 Lawrence Central graduate, is a freshman at Indiana University. Alexa played golf at LC. Her sister Claire, a freshman, played on the LC golf team last fall.

“It’s been fantastic. Both of our girls have been challenged academically and beyond my expectations,” Jim said. “Academically, I think it can stack up with anyone.”

Barb said she and Jim have always agreed that once you are settled in a community, you want to make the best of it for everyone.

Barb said they are far from alone in that mission, stressing they are only one set of many parents who pitch in to help the schools in a variety of fashions.

“We have met so many wonderful people and made terrific friends who are also

So after spring break, we set up a little boutique in one of the rooms to get prom dresses and accessories,” Barb said.

That helped loan 29 girls a dress or other accessories they needed to lessen the cost of the prom.

In addition to devotion to their schools, the Austins have helped several couples go through the marriage preparation courses at Holy Spirit Parish at Geist in Fishers.

“It’s good for our marriage, too,” Barb said.

invested in the community, generously giving time, sharing skills, and yes, of course, helping to fund projects and initiatives,” Barb said.

Jim is the chief marketing officer for Riley Children’s Foundation. He also is involved with his own development company.

Jim, who attended parochial schools growing up in Chicago, moved to Indianapolis originally to work for Simon Property Group.

“Until you are faced with that, you never think about whether we are going to send our kids to public or private school,” Jim said. “At the time, we were introduced to a wonderful school in Indian Creek Elementary. It was a rock-star school. It was a

positive experience, and I could see it was benefiting our kids.”

Jim said they began getting involved in the Fall Festival fundraiser for Indian Creek.

“We chaired a lot of the fundraisers for the schools,” Barb said. “We were field trip chaperones and classroom helpers. We then did a Belzer Middle School fundraiser.

Then at Lawrence Central, we’ve been involved with their booster club.”

Like many parents, Jim said they work concessions at the football games.

As a co-adviser for the Student Foundation, Barb helped the organization coordinate the collection of prom dresses for both Lawrence North and Lawrence Central students.

In March, Barb Austin directed the annual Light Their Future Celebration – the major fundraiser for Lawrence Township School Foundation – for the fourth straight year and will likely direct the 2018 fundraiser. The 2017 Celebration in March raised approximately $95,000.

“Barb’s outstanding leadership and commitment to the students of Lawrence Township has been invaluable to the foundation,” said Angela McIntyre, deputy director for the foundation.

“Whether it is guiding our youth through our Student Foundation, serving as a foundation board member or chairing the Celebration, she gives 100 percent and makes a huge impact.”

The reward comes from the students.

“We have loved seeing the spark of giving back ignited within the student population at all grade levels,” Barb said. “Our kids are amazing.”

The foundation’s Fore the Kids Golf Outing at Old Oakland Golf Club is set to start at 11 a.m. June 1. It will be an 18hole Florida Scramble.

Although details are still in the planning stage, Barb said the weekend of Sept. 22, the 75th anniversary of Lawrence Central, will be homecoming weekend.

Practice makes perfect

Commentary by Terry Anker “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” inquired a visitor to New York City looking for the famed music venue. “Practice, practice, practice” said the man on the street, misunderstanding her need for geographic coordinates from a cartographer rather than work-ethic advice from a smart aleck.

Still, he made a good point.

If we ever hope to move from audience to stage, hard work is key. Sure, talent figures in. Certainly, accomplishment requires a bit of aptitude – and a connected relative can’t hurt.

But for most of us, the overwhelming majority of us, in fact, success demands hard work.

So, if practice is the undisputed linchpin required to get us from a spot in the balcony to one at center stage, why do so few of us think about it? As youngsters, we practiced everything. But as adults, we might call what we do a practice (medical and legal, among others), but seldom do we commit to two hours after a day’s work to improve our game. It makes some sense.

Practice leads to mastery. Most of us don’t continue to work on the multiplication tables we learned as kids.

But, aren’t there things that we’ve yet to master? Aren’t there things in our lives that would benefit from a bit more practice?

Famed tutor to Alexander the Great, Aristotle, said, “We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.” If this is solid coaching to someone who came to be known as “The Great,” isn’t it good enough for us?

Editor, Building and developing property in Fishers should be a privilege. A great environment has been created here and that is clear by all the new housing and commercial development. The growth we have experienced in the last 10 years has been nothing short of breathtaking.

This growth is clearly a benefit for the developers and builders, but not always a benefit for our community and our environment. The open spaces that we all enjoy are being filled in with houses and buildings. In some cases, zoning variances have allowed houses to be packed together, created subdivisions next to each other that don’t connect or have no plan for walking and biking. Fishers has a good set of zoning standards and we should stick with them, unless there is a clear benefit for the city and its citizens.

We are a desirable community to live in that was created by good schools, family values, ease of traffic congestion and safety. I hope as our city grows we can continue to maintain the values that at-

tracted people, like me, to move here in the first place.

I am concerned about our city’s growth and the strain it puts on the schools, infrastructure and commercial development that creates traffic issues.

These items sometimes appear to be an afterthought. Our leaders seem surprised when after new housing and buildings have been approved, that our schools aren’t big enough or the roads aren’t wide enough anymore. Then we have a tax referendum or a new wheel tax to cover the gap that new property taxes or tax incentives don’t fill. There needs to be a stronger, upfront correlation between new building and the impact on schools, roads, fire, police and city administration.

As a solution, I have often thought that developers should pay a much larger “impact fee” for the privilege of building in Fishers to help offset the infrastructure that will be required after they are long gone. What do you think?

Every year we have a blowout Kentucky Derby celebration at our house, and every year, in anticipation of said humor party, we run around like maniacs finishing DIY projects begun in October and taking a half-hearted stab at spring cleaning. I’m reminded of the 1982 film “Poltergeist.”

Two weeks out, life seems to be going along per usual, but as we approach the first Saturday in May, strange things begin to happen. My children start disappearing, one to her best friend Lisa’s, another to his room at the end of the upstairs hallway. And the youngest, whom I’ll call Carol Ann for this piece, is literally nowhere to be found. I can sometimes hear her highpitched voice at night, coming from the walls ... or wait, maybe the TV, but I can never seem to locate her.

With a couple of days to go, my husband Doo and I aren’t sleeping much. Terrifying questions prey on our sanity: Will we suffer another ham-tastrophe reminiscent of 2011? Why have only 15 percent of our guests RSVP’d? It’s not unusual for us to hallucinate chairs set up in odd formations and bottles of Makers Mark mysteriously floating through the air. So I call in professional help.

The Maids arrive in force, wielding strange high-tech probes they call “vacuums” while assessing the paranormal activity of filth in every room. Our domestic predicament is declared “legit” and the exorcism begins. Hours later, having located Carol Ann ensconced in a “Gossip Girl” marathon on Netflix and sanitized the home against future bacterial possession, they depart, announcing, “This house is clean.”

Doo and I can only hope they’re right. mint juleps only go so far in taming a party poltergeist. Peace out.

If you have any plans to visit humor the Crescent City, I submit the following warnings regarding the French Quarter, the hub of all tourist activity. During our first evening’s dinner, a threepiece combo played jazz. The restaurant tacked on a $6 cover charge per person for the music. “Wait a second,� I said to the server, “we came here to eat and talk. We didn’t even know about the music.� “You were in the same room as the music,� the waiter said, impatiently. “I’m also in the same room as a $700 bottle of Lafite Rothschild at the next table.  But I’m just paying for my Diet Pepsi,� I replied.

The next night, we went to a popular spot that served awesome rolls. I mentioned to the waiter we were missing our bread plates. “We don’t provide those,� he informed us. “We encourage you to enjoy the bread. We’ll tidy up your mess.� “Are you saying this because you know we’re from Indiana?� I asked sarcastically.

“Don’t feel bad,� the couple next to us said. “We’re from Kentucky, and we didn’t even get utensils.�

Mary Ellen was clearly uncomfortable as I tore into the warm rolls, leaving evidence of my sloppiness all over the table and floor. I quickly hid the butter knife before she could insert it into my thigh.

In busy restaurants, there is no checksplitting allowed. John and I wanted to outwit the system. I stated to our server that even though we were sharing a table, we had just met this other couple out on the sidewalk, and therefore we required separate checks. She didn’t fall for it. Now, John and I were even more determined to circumvent this bizarre policy.

The next night, our food at CafĂŠ Amelie was outstanding, and this time the Wolfsies got our own check. “Well, I must admit, your plan worked,â€?

Mary Ellen said, sarcastically. “But I wonder where the Murphys are having dinner?�

Facts on skin cancer Commentary by Cecelia E. Schmalbach

Fact No. 1: Melanoma is a leading cause of death.

There are two classifications of skin cancer: melanoma (which can aggressively spread throughout the prevention body) and non-melanoma (basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma, which responds to treatment fairly well and has a lower rate of spreading). Melanoma is often a result of an intense sunburn. Just one sunburn in your entire life puts you at greater risk for melanoma. On the other hand, non-melanoma skin cancer is often a result of cumulative exposure to the sun over time, such as occurs with prolonged outdoor activities and professions.

Fact No. 2: All skin tones can get skin cancer.

Although fair-skinned people are more likely to get skin cancer, those with darker skin can develop the disease as well. Anyone can get a sunburn, which increases the risk for melanoma.

Fact No. 3: Tanning booths increase your risk.

Many believe that if they get a “baseline” tan from a tanning booth, they will not burn as easily when they go on vacation.

Unfortunately, there is no evidence to support that theory.

Fact No. 4: Prevention and early detection can save your life.

When outdoors, cover up. Stay in the shade, wear wide-brimmed hats and use sun block of at least SPF 30. Try to avoid being in direct sunlight during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

You may have heard about the ABCD warning signs of skin cancer (Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation and Diameter), but equally important is to be vigilantly aware of E: Evolution, or change.

NPA to host watercolor sessions

By Heather Collins editorial@youarecurrent.com Nickel Plate Arts will host watercolor painting with Anna Afshar from 6 to 9 p.m. each Thursday from May 4 to May art 25.

During the watercolor painting sessions, Afshar will cover most watercolor techniques, including how to use different materials and the basics of color theory, drawing, perspective and composition. Sessions will include work from photos, still life and on-location sites.

Afshar, a Russian-born artist who lives in Indianapolis, has studied with well-known artists and teachers from around the world, including Alvaro Castagnet, David Taylor, Cheng-Khee Chee and Frank Webb.

“Watercolor still remains my first and only love. It always surprises and keeps you on your toes. You can never quite relax and think, ‘I got it’,” Afshar said.

Afshar is a signature member of the Watercolor Society of Indiana, Hoosier Salon and Indiana Artists Club. In 2015, she won “Best of Show” at the Watercolor Society of Indiana’s 2015 Annual Juried Exhibit and the

Hamilton Town Center’s Chalk Art Festival is back, and the shopping center is inviting artists and vendors from event across Indiana to join the fun.

The deadline for artists to register is May 27.

At 10 a.m., June 10, local artists will begin to line the shopping center’s streets with chalk art masterpieces and compete for prizes in amateur and professional categories. The festival opens to the public at 1 p.m. Each artist can design one parking space. Judges and the public will determine the top three winners in each category.

Winners will be announced June 12.

New this year, the registration fee is waived and artists can compete for no charge. Artists must provide their own materials and must be water-based, not oil-based. Hamilton Town Center asks that only registered artists work on the design.

All registrants over age 18 will be placed in the professional category.

Chalk Art Festival attendees can vote on their favorite works of art while visiting the vendor booths along the streets.

An empire in an afternoon Commentary by Don Knebel People come to Istanbul, Turkey from all over the world to see the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and other architectravel tural masterpieces. If they have time, they go on to Ephesus and Aspendos to see the ruins of great works from antiquity. On the way home, they might visit Jerusalem and see the Dome of the Rock.

All these historic structures, as well as some that no longer exist, can be seen during a pleasant stroll along Istanbul’s Golden Horn.

The Golden Horn is a horn-shaped estuary that flows into the Bosporus Strait separating European and Asian Istanbul.

Until recently, the Golden Horn was home to slaughter houses, foundries, factories and shipyards, creating a polluted waterway and an unattractive shoreline. In the late 1980s, the Istanbul government began demolishing the industrial buildings and replacing them with parks and museums. Miniaturk, one of the largest miniature parks in the world, opened on a 15-acre reclamation site in 2003.

Miniaturk includes 1:25 scale models of important architectural works from areas

once controlled by the Ottoman Empire.

The more than 125 miniature reproductions include about 45 from Istanbul, 45 from the rest of Turkey and the remainder from other areas, including Israel. The most interesting of the miniatures are interpretations of two lost buildings considered in antiquity among the Seven Wonders of the World: The colonnaded temple to Artemis in Ephesus that was demolished by a Christian mob in 401 after Emperor Theodosius I outlawed paganism, and the tomb of Mausolus, the source of the word “mausoleum” and the architectural inspiration for the Indiana War Memorial, which was destroyed by a series of earthquakes in the Middle Ages.

Visiting Miniaturk is not a substitute for actually exploring the historic structures of Istanbul. But as an introduction to Turkey and the glory of the Ottoman Empire, it is worth a couple of hours.
