Inclusive glider installed

Doctors said he wasn’t exparks pected to live past the age of 8. Will is 13 and has cerebral palsy. In addition to the struggles associated with his disability, Will’s mother, Dr. Lyn Jones, is constantly searching for suitable playground equipment for her son in local parks.

An Alta Glide Inclusive Glider Swing was installed in Fishers’ Holland Park last month. The swing is different than other wheelchair-accessible swings, which Lyn said seem almost like a cage and are isolated from other playground equipment.

“What makes this swing really cool is that it can fit a lot of people on it,” Lyn said. “It has benches so a wheelchair or two or three can roll on there. The swing moves back and forth, and it kind of bounces. It is really inclusive, so Will can be on there with his friends who are in wheelchairs and who aren’t in wheelchairs. He could be on there with his grandparents.”

Another plus, Lyn said, is the new swing isn’t isolated.

“It was put ... in the heart of Holland Park,” she said. “Right there, not far away from everybody else. There’s no cage around it, and it’s very welcoming and opening and inviting.”

A major player in the swing’s installation was Fishers City Councilor Cecilia Coble.

“Not a lot of action was taken until Cecilia Coble became city councilwoman,” Lyn said. “She got (Deputy Mayor) Leah McGrath and (Parks Director) Tony Elliot to listen.”

Students recognized as good citizens The Horseshoe Prairie Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, recently recognized winners from Hamilton County high schools in its Good Citizens Program, which is open to all high school seniors enrolled in public or private schools accredited by their state board of education. Students submit their essays on the topic of what good citizenship means to them, displaying qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Essays are independently judged, and each school's winning essayist receives a DAR Good Citizen pin, certificate and recognition card. One student is selected as the overall winner, and that essay will be judged in the Indiana State DAR Good Citizen competition. Smith publishes Civil War book

By Renee Larr • news@currentinfishers.com Fishers resident Robert R. Smith recently published a book called “Indiana and the Sultana Disaster: The story of a survivor.”

The book details the Civil history War story of his great, great grandfather, John H. King, a private in the Ninth Indiana Cavalry. Smith was left with memories of King when his grandmother passed away.

“She left a poster that belonged to my great, great grandfather and also two photographs of him,” Smith said.

King was sent home from a Yankee prisoner of war camp on the Sultana, a steamboat paddle wheeler. The boat was overloaded with passengers and exploded and killed an estimated 1,700 on board, making it the greatest maritime disaster in the U.S. King was one of the survivors.

The book also discusses King’s interactions with two other survivors from Fishers, George Fisher and John Thompson.

Where do you look for help? As I grew up, my heroes were the old west protectors like Roy Rogers, Matt Dillon, faith Gene Autry, Davey Crockett and Daniel Boone. You could always count on these heroes to come to the rescue at just the right time to save those in trouble. If they could not do the job on their own, they would bring the cavalry, who would ride over the hill and save the day.

Military wisdom says to strive for the high ground in battle. Riding down from above is always preferable than defending from below. Thus, conventional wisdom says to look to the hills for your help.

Whether it is the cavalry, Daniel Boone or Matt Dillon, they will come from the high ground to bring help.

But the Psalmist asks the question in a rhetorical manner. I lift up my eyes to the hills – from where will my help come? The answer for the Psalmist and for all those who believe in the God of creation is that our help does not come riding over the hills, does not carry the latest weapon, is not an army or old west marshal. Our help,

the Psalmist says, comes from the creator of Heaven and Earth. Our help is bigger than any army, more powerful than all of the world’s superpowers. He is the one that created all that is and was and shall ever be.

Our helper, savior, redeemer is also creator, father and friend. He protects our every step and never misses even one obstacle in our way, as he never sleeps, never looks away, never becomes distracted.

If you have asked for God’s help and he has not come riding up over the horizon to save, it is because he is making ready all that is needed for your next steps. Wait for him, do not run ahead, do not lag behind, but wait for the Lord of Heaven and Earth.

Few in the Field McCordsville brewer Eilise Lane talks on brewing in a male-dominated profession

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com Eilise Lane said nearly a decade has passed since her interest in craft beer was piqued. cover story Now, about five years after she said she went “full-time beer,” Lane runs a successful brewery in McCordsville: Scarlet Lane.

“I always enjoyed craft beer,” she said. “I moved out to Oregon and lived there for seven years. So I really started appreciating craft beer there. It’s kind of a Mecca. At the time, I had a corporate job, but I kept an interest in brewing. My husband and I traveled all over the West Coast drinking and kind of refining our palete.”

SWITCHING CAREERS In a vastly different career path, Lane worked in insurance as a program manager implementing IT projects to trim workforce.

“So, I’d fly to like Oklahoma, work in an office to determine what they do, implement an IT resource and eventually have to fire all of those people,” Lane said. “It didn’t make me a happy person. Eventually, I started home-brewing and kept getting more and more into it.

“My parents and husband saw that I had happiness and joy again, but only when I was around beer. So, they convinced me to quit my job and go back to school for fermentation sciences.”

SHARING THE HISTORY From there, Lane said her goal was to bring a little bit of Ore-

gon’s craft beer scene to Indiana. But in a profession where men are typically at the helm, Lane is eager to share the interesting history of the female role in brewing.

“Women were the original brewers,” she said. “(Men) were the hunters, and we were the gatherers. So, it was believed that (women) had a way to tell what was going to be poisonous, and we would be making the beer since water and sanitation was a huge problem. It wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution that men took over brewing because they made it into machinery.

“Beer has been made since the beginning of time. It started out truly in clay pots. You can find it in Egyptian history and so many other regions. It’s so interesting. There are ancient rulebooks that say men can’t touch it because the evil spirits would get into the beer.”

In today’s world, the craft is more male-dominated.

“One of the most common things is, people do not or would not recognize me as the brewer,” Lane said. “It can be a really hard, physical job. There are differences in men and women. You know, the guys will throw a 55-pound bag of grain on their shoulder, but I use my hips. It’s just adjusting to the differences, just working smarter.”

HANGIN’ TOUGH: A RITA KOHN TRIBUTE On March 15, Scarlet Lane launched its newest beer, ‘Hangin’ Tough,’ in partnership with Broad Ripple Brewpub, to honor Indy beer writer Rita Kohn, who has been writing about beer for two decades as NUVO magazine’s craft beer columnist.

“Rita has been a huge inspiration to all of us,” Scarlet Lane brewer and owner Eilise Lane said. “She has been writing about beer for as long as anyone in Indiana can remember, and she’s actually been at NUVO longer than anyone that currently works there has been.”

Commentary by Terry Anker The path to a happy life and fulfilling career is rarely a direct one. In fact, modern times seemingly dictate an intentionally circuitous route. We switch jobs with ever increasing frequency. We move from home to home. We jump from city to city, even state to state and nation to nation. The toll of this constant condition of change can be a difficult burden for many. We struggle to create and maintain long-term and stable relationships. We often become disassociated from our family and neighbors. Isolation is an emerging human crisis even as we are more connected than ever before.

The reasons that drive us to give up the known, the familiar and the constant to seek new challenges and opportunities are as varied as the ways that we define the fulfillment that we seek. Several years ago, I decided to veer off a bit from the secure and well-understood career I’d built in the previous 20 years to serve somewhat more directly. Long a volunteer and donor to a variety of causes, an opportunity was presented to help lead the local community foundation, to build its endowment and to elevate its profile. This month marks the completion of that tenure.

It has been a good, if imperfect, run.

Many metrics have been achieved and congratulations exchanged. Yet, like many at a moment of transition, one looks for summation of it all. What was learned? How could it have been better? Was it worth the effort? Given another at-bat, would we look for the same pitch?

As I return to a life more familiar, I will miss the one that I’ve come to live. But happiness is found in its pursuit. And, in that, I’m a lucky guy.

REA D ER ’ S V I EW Not ‘weary’ from the process Editor, I’m not “weary!” Pulte, at last week’s (advisory plan commission meeting), appealed to the members, apologizing repeatedly that they may be “weary” as if the process is wearing them out and trying their patience! The overall consensus was that no, we are not weary, we just want you to show us the improvements asked for! Obviously, Pulte did not believe they would have the vote so they requested a continuance based upon a questionable upgrade which was so new and fresh they couldn’t provide the details.

The behavior of Pulte is a prime example of the way developers seem to be bullying their way through the process with little or no regard for the wishes of the people or the community and the Comprehensive Plan for which they stand.

The unprecedented allowance of Pulte to return again and again throughout this Wood Wind PUD is a perfect example of how our administration appears to favor the developer over the citizens.

It also appears, and should be noted, that APC member Bob Horkay has shown obvious inconsistency in not recusing himself from participating because he has a son working for Pulte, but did recuse himself in a proposed zoning change before the APC for Birch Dalton, because of a son that works for them.

Since starting my petition “Stop Irresponsible Development,” we are close to 1,000 signatures and the comments keep coming and are so heartfelt about fast-paced developments, concern about schools and infrastructure and loss of rural countryside. One signer comments “We’ve lived here less than three years and are appalled at the rampant, profitdriven growth and total disregard for the environment.” Bottom line is the pace at which developments, 19 in our area alone, are being pushed through, none of them custom, none that are supporting our infrastructure and schools, is alarming.

We can do better, we deserve better!

If being quietly happy that my husband Doo is out of town is wrong, people, then I gotta be honest, I don’t want to humor be right! I love Doo, and I know he loves me, but a little space every now and again is a welcome respite from the demands of marriage. Can I get an “amen?”

No? OK. Let me break it down. Male partners are large children, especially during cold and flu season. They are needy, they can’t seem to act independently and more often than not, they pee on the wall instead of in the toilet. Sure, they work hard, and mine in particular is extraordinarily handy around the house. But their ability to begin and finish a task is often handicapped by their desire to eat, play on the computer, or in my case, watch the ever-depressing but admittedly entertaining poo-show that is the news.

So I am thrilled that Doo will be gone for a few nights, and I’ll have complete control of the kitchen, bedroom and remote. I’ll only need to mentally keep track of my four actual teenagers and not worry about whether Doo will be able to pick up from dance or help with homework.

Now, should you be calling me a horrible wife, know that Doo is probably enjoying the break even more than I am. He can turn on every light in his hotel room, keep the volume up on the TV and not be concerned with leaving the place a complete pit. He’s free to be Doo – an ADD, extraverted night-owl who temporarily has no parenting or spousal responsibilities whatsoever. Truly, this is a win-win scenario!

And the best part is, once Doo returns, I’ll have experienced just enough singleparenting to appreciate his love and support once again. So I say, bring on the spouse-free week! Yay! Peace out.

Troubling signs Commentary by Dick Wolfsie My mother drove her Buick until almost 90 … and sometimes faster. She was in great health at age 87, but humor it irked her that many of her able-bodied friends had handicap license plates that allowed them to park closer to the grocery store. She’d get out of her car and drag her foot along the ground to appear disabled. The A&P manager overlooked it. He wasn’t as lenient on the shoplifting charges, though. I admit that I’ve parked in the spaces that said: PARKING FOR MOTHERS WITH TODDLERS I don’t have a toddler, but when I did, there were no reserved spaces. By the way, the signs are sexist: men can obviously have toddlers, although they probably left them home with mom.

PARKING FOR EXPECTANT MOMS I once pulled into this space to hurriedly purchase a dozen eggs. Someone recognized me and pointed out to me that I was not pregnant. I won’t do that again, but just in case of a real emergency, I now carry a down pillow in the back seat.

PARKING FOR ONLINE CUSTOMERS ONLY Huh? These folks were too lazy to shop

at the actual store, and too impatient to have their merchandise delivered. Now they want their own parking space? To be fair, if you are pregnant and also dragging along two toddlers to pick up a car seat you ordered online, you should be allowed to park right inside the store.

Here’s one that annoys me: PARKING FOR TAKE-OUT CUSTOMERS ONLY Just because you ordered take-out doesn’t mean you should get a space in front of the restaurant. You were too tired to cook at home and too cheap to tip the waitress - and now you want a special place to park? If you want to feed your face quickly, there’s a McDonald’s drivethru right across the street from that Applebee’s.

I’d like a sign that says: DICK WOLFSIE ONLY. But here’s how I am different from take-out customers and pregnant women: If I’m not using my space, it’s all yours.

Stratman sets trend with 24/7 dental care

Several years ago, Dr. Dean Stratman found himself looking for a veterinarian when his dog got into a skirmish with a raccoon. new biz The Indianapolis dentist was surprised to learn there were three 24-hour veterinarians in the Indianapolis area.

“I thought that was amazing because there were no dental Stratman offices open on Saturdays or Sundays and none at night,” Stratman said. “So in 2000 I started experimenting on a seven-day-a-week schedule, just day hours. Within two years, I started my last company, ImmediaDent, a 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. urgent care.”

Stratman started it in 2003 and spread it to about 10 offices and then sold that company in 2007. He had a non-compete contract for five years where Stratman couldn’t conduct an

extended hours practice.

Stratman started 24 Hour Dental Care, which he said was the first true 24/7 dental office in the U.S, in downtown Indianapolis.

In September 2015, he moved it to 7225 U.S. 31 S., in Indianapolis. He opened his second clinic at 8060 N. Shadeland Ave., in the Geist area in December 2016. He has plans to open two additional locations by the end of the year. There are no appointments.

“It’s just like an emergency room,” Strat-

man said. “We’re not doing cleanings, whitenings or anything like that. We’re taking care of broken teeth or trauma, things like that.”

Stratman said he started thinking about ways to improve on the success he had with ImmediaDent.

“We saw that a lot of our patients coming in who were up all night with toothaches,” Stratman said. “Then first thing in the morning we had 20 people show up that had been up all night with a toothache.

The emergency rooms were bottlenecking with dental emergencies.”

There is not much ER doctors can do for those patients.

Stratman, who serves as president and founder, is one of the dentists. Stratman’s wife, Dr. Shirley Ferreira-Stratman, a dentist, serves as the chief dental officer.

His son, Dean Stratman II, is the chief brand officer. Son Brock will graduate from Indiana University School of Dentistry in May and join the practice. Daughter Emily, an IUPUI freshman, works as a receptionist.

A 24-Hour Dental Care will open in Avon in April. Stratman said he also hopes to add another office on Indianapolis’ east side in July.

Indiana Repertory Theatre announces new season lineup

By Zach Dunkin • news@geistcurrent.com For 20 years, James Still has been the playwright in residency at the Indiana Repertory Theatre, Theater and to honor him, the Indy downtown show palace is featuring two of his plays in its 46th season. IRT recently announced the nine-production season, which runs from Sept.19 through May 20, 2018.

The Still pieces are “Appoggiatura,” a romantic idyll set in Venice, and audience favorite “Looking over the President’s Shoulders,” a celebration of native Hoosier Still Alonzo Fields’ long career in the White House. Fields spent two decades as chief butler at the White House, serving Presidents Herbert H. Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

ship between a writer and an audience, a body of work and a community and stories told and hearts opened.”

One of the IRT’s most requested productions, “Looking over the President’s Shoulders” is a one-man show that debuted in the 2001-02 season and returned in the 2007-08 season. The 2017-18 season will mark the second time David Alan Anderson has been cast as Fields.

“I continue to be amazed by how audiences are drawn to David Anderson,” Still said. “He’s a wonderful storyteller on stage.”

“Appoggiatura” runs March 7-31 on the Mainstage, followed by “Looking over the President’s Shoulder,” March 27-May 6 on the Upperstage.

Another of the season’s biggest highlights is one of America’s first non-commercial productions of the Tony Award-winning hit, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” Based on the 2003 mystery novel by British author Mark Haddon, the story involves a teenage boy with an autism spectrum condition who discovers the dead body of the neighbor’s dog. The dog’s owner calls the

police, and the boy comes under suspicion. He decides to investigate the dog’s death, despite his father’s orders to stay out of other people’s business. The production runs from Sept. 19 to Oct.14 “The Originalist,” a play by John Strand, will run Oct. 17-Nov. 12. The two main subjects of the play are Supreme Court Justice and conservative icon Antonin Scalia, arguably among the most polarizing jurists of his stature in American history, and his young, liberal, female law intern.

“This season has been specifically selected for our central Indiana audiences of all ages, to invite us to come together as a community under one roof and share in the magic of live theater,” said Janet Allen, IRT executive artistic director. “It celebrates our differences while reminding us that we are deeply connected. We’ll create new, insightful productions of important classics as well as challenging new work to encourage us to pause, reflect, enjoy and reenergize.”

LSS to host songwriters concert

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Bryce Ernest Taylor is so eager to perform in The Logan Street Sancmusic tuary’s Second Saturday Songwriters Showcase series that he decided to write a new song.

Taylor said the song is so new that it will not be found on any recording - yet.

“It was somewhat inspired by this upcoming opportunity to share the Logan Street stage with these two wonderful singer/songwriters,” said Taylor, who lives in Muncie.

Taylor will be joined by Jessie Phelps, Indianapolis, and Shawna Caspi, from Toronto, at 7 p.m. April 8 at LSS, 1274 Logan St., Noblesville. Phelps performed at a concert at LSS in 2016 and this is Caspi’s first appearance.

Taylor performed at Logan Street in October as part of the NICE (Noblesville Interdisciplinary Creativity Expo) event.

“I dressed as the Mad Hatter and performed my song ‘Alice,’ inspired by a literary prompt from ‘Alice in Wonderland,’” Taylor said.

from his 2015 album, “Lighter Than Air” as well as some from his upcoming EP. “My songs have progressive folk and classic singer/songwriter influences, for sure, with strong

vocals and lyrics, interesting guitar work and a good dose of fingerpicking,” he said. “Listeners tell me my music reminds them of Paul Simon or James Taylor, who are definite influences. However, in terms of current artists, I aspire to have the energy and creativity of Jason Mraz, the songwriting of Ray LaMontagne or Jack Johnson, and the passion of Damien Rice or Ed Sheeran. My songs tend to be less about losing or longing for love, and more about the search for creativity and meaning in life and relationships.”

Alys Caviness-Gober, LSS secretary, said typically each musician will do three songs at a time, rotating over a two-hour period, with an intermission to give the performers a chance to talk to the audience and sell their merchandise and albums.

Reprinted with permission from the American Institute for Cancer Research Servings: 12 Dough: 1 cup whole-wheat flour, 1 cup all-purpose flour, divided, 1 package (1/4 ounce) quick-rise yeast, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 cup warm water, 125-130 F, 1 tablespoon canola oil Topping: 7 medium fresh mushrooms, sliced, 3 plum tomatoes, chopped, 1 small green bell pepper, slivered, 1/2 cup sliced black olives, 1/4 cup chopped red onion, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano, 1/4 teaspoon thyme, 1/4 teaspoon basil, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, nonstick cooking spray, 2 teaspoons cornmeal Directions: Heat oven to 475 F. To make dough: In mixing bowl, combine wholewheat flour, 1/2 cup all- purpose flour, yeast and salt. Add water and oil. Beat until

smooth. Stir in remain- ing all-purpose flour to form soft dough. Place onto floured surface and knead by hand until consistent and elastic, about 4 minutes. Cover and let stand 15 minutes.

To make topping: In bowl, combine mushrooms, tomatoes, green bell pepper, olives, onion, oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, oregano, thyme, basil and garlic powder.

Coat 15-by-10-by-1-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Sprinkle with cornmeal. Gently press dough into pan. With fork, generously prick dough.

Bake 10 minutes, or until lightly browned.

Cover dough with topping mixture. Bake additional 10 minutes, or until edges are golden brown.

The most expensive opera house in the world was supposed to become a symbol of Copenhagen, travel Denmark. Instead, it has become something of a local embarrassment.

In the late 1990s, Arnold Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, the billionaire owner of Mærsk, the world’s largest container shipping company, thought his home city of Copenhagen needed a symbol. He proposed constructing an opera house on a man-made island in Copenhagen’s harbor and donating the building to the government.

Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller hired 75-year-old Henning Larsen, a Danish architect whose mentor had designed the iconic opera house in Sydney, Australia. Mærsk McKinney Møller dictated some of the design elements, including adding metal to the curved entry. When completed in 2004, Copenhagen’s new 450,000-square-foot opera house included 1,000 rooms spread among

14 stories, five of them underground. The ceiling of the foyer was covered with more than three pounds of gold leaf. The total cost of the building was about $500 million, or more than $300,000 for each of the approximately 1,400 seats in the main auditorium.

Despite (or perhaps because of) its enormous cost, the building’s design has been widely lampooned, described variously as a fly, an oil can and a space ship. The glass and metal entry has been compared unfavorably to the grill of a 1955 Pontiac.

The curved maple wall at the rear of the foyer, stained orange to suggest a violin, is known locally as the “giant pumpkin.” Even architect Larsen, who acknowledged the building as his “greatest failure,” thought it looked like a toaster.
