Fishers High School hosts mental health program 1h 1TcW CPh[^a “ beth@youarecurrent.com On March 2, Fishers High School hosted Stand Up for Mental Health with Hope, Help and Community. The program, sponsored by Parents in Partnership and WELLNESS the Peyton Riekhof Foundation for Youth Hope, featured comedian and mental health activist Kevin Breel and a community panel of mental health experts and two local students.

After Mike Riekhof opened the presentation, City of Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness addressed the audience. Fadness announced community-wide mental health initiatives at his State of the City address. “Our police department was called to a home or business to help an individual needing mental health assistance 157 times last year,� said Fadness. We can be a great city that helps wipe away the stigma of mental health.�

Guest speaker Kevin Breel, a speaker and comedian who has struggled with depression, returned for a second time.

He spoke to 1500 high school juniors during the school day, before participating in the panel. “It weighs on me just how many kids came up to me to say that they struggle with it (depression),� said Breel. “The fact that you are trying to change the conversation as a community is very special.�

In addition to Breel, the panel experts included Sheila Irick, MD, a psychiatrist at IU Health, Dawn Crossman a family therapist from Center for Hope, Chris Graves, guidance counselor and suicide prevention coordinator for the HSE school district, Lou Ann Lamaire-Pyle, from Aspire crisis center, HSE Resource Officer Alica Ahnert.

Ryan Altward of Young Life facilitated a Q & A session between panel members and the audience. Altward encouraged the audience to wade into the uncomfortable and share what they’ve experienced.

Irick said that parents often ask her to explain differences between typical teen behavior and signs of depression.

Dawn Crossman from Center for Hope discussed the relationship between teens who self-harm and suicide. “Those who hurt themselves are at a higher risk for suicide,� said Crossman. She advised that concerned parents must be direct with their teens to help prevent suicide. “What parents want to ask is ‘Are you thinking about taking your own life?’ because students with depression and anxiety are more likely to get into recovery if they are confronted.�

Fadness wants comprehensive plan

By Justin Moran Â&#x201C; ]Tfb/VTXbcRdaaT]c R^\ Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness spoke with Fishers residents Feb. 26 at Conner Prairie Interactive History Park, answering quesOUTREACH tions and discussing his desire for a comprehensive plan and vision for the fast-growing community. More than 50 locals were on hand to engage the mayor, who described the event as an effort to meet residents where theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re at.

Fadness said he wants to be accessible and available to talk about whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going on in the city.

He began the night with a brief recap of his State of the City speech before fielding questions.

Topics of discussion varied from school funding and roadwork to the ash borer attacking thousands of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trees.

Mayor Fadness laid out his first priority as working to change the state funding formula to boost school funding without raising taxes.

He also touched on a $30 to $35-million plan (two-thirds federally funded) to improve the road system over the next three to five years, again without raising taxes.

The program includes roundabouts on Cumberland Road at both 106th and 131st Streets, and widening 96th Street to four lanes from Cumberland to Lantern Road. The mayor sipped his Diet Coke in between questions, and the mood of the evening was positive, with the group breaking into applause multiple times throughout.

When it comes to bringing in growing businesses, he said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We need a place where people want to be and live.â&#x20AC;?

Mayor Fadness agreed, citing that millennials look to establish a home before choosing where theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll work.

There were a dozen city staff at the event, including booths manned by the Police and Fire Depts., and Parks & Recreation.

The only thing lacking was some more attendance and the mayor asked those coming to invite friends and neighbors back next time.

For Geist resident Jexy Rowe, this COVER STORY was something she has been passionate about for the greater duration of her life. Learning from her international experiences studying and traveling in the Eastern hemisphere, the Ecuadorian native is now helping international students experience the United States here in Indiana.

Rowe works as a local coordinator for the International Student Exchange program. Based out of New York, the nationwide program aims to bring international high school students to live in the U.S. with host families while attending local schools. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The idea of this program is to try to connect cultures, try to connect people from other countries, bring them here so they can be aware about the United States so they can be aware of the real values and principles of American life,â&#x20AC;?

Rowe said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Then after, these children will go back home and tell about their experiences (in the U.S.) and that will change the minds of their community.â&#x20AC;?

Rowe, who has past international teaching experience, decided she wanted to help students connect with different cultures after having spent time studying abroad herself. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just started, but the idea of joining this program was because I was, myself, an international student, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been working as a teacher for five years working with different children, different countries, and this is something Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really interested in and I just want to help these kind of programs,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I like to connect people because I understand how it feels to be an international student; what your expectations are, what your fears are, what to do if thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an emergency or who can you talk to. These kind of things, in my time [as a student], I did not have that opportunity, but now Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m here and I can help [international students].â&#x20AC;?

The ISE program was founded by the United States Department of State in 1982 as an effort to make people more aware of American culture.

The nonprofit program is â&#x20AC;&#x153;dedicated to bringing people of the world closer together through student exchange and intercultural education.â&#x20AC;? ISE works with approximately 40 countries and 120 international organizations. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What we do if there is an international student that is interested, they will come to one of

Favorite aspects of Geist: â&#x20AC;&#x153;What I like in Geist is the neighborhood. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very clean, very green. I like the homes there. I like that I feel secure when Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m walking in my neighborhood. Also what I like are the amenities of the community. I like to go see the lake.

I like the stores that are around the area. I think that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very secure area. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very important to me.â&#x20AC;?

those international agencies and they will have to meet requirements,â&#x20AC;? Rowe explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Once they meet those requirements the agency will contact us. We make sure the students are very well screened and are qualified.â&#x20AC;?

As a local coordinator of the central Indiana area, Rowe is responsible for finding a perfect match between the international student and a local family willing to host. Families and students both must follow firm ISE regulations to ensure a proper student-family match. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As a coordinator we need to come and visit the family in their home and to talk to all the members of the family,â&#x20AC;? Rowe said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We need to make sure they live there, that all the members of the family are okay with [hosting], and if the children are over 18 then they need to pass a background check as well. We need to make sure they can offer the room and that they can follow the rules. When everything is approved and the family is accepted, we found a child they would be happy to host and everything is okay, we finish the program by issuing the USDS form that

the students need to apply for a Visa.â&#x20AC;?

Once the students are matched and united with a family, Rowe and other coordinators are responsible for monitoring the family throughout the studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stay. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These children that we connect with these families, we monitor them. We monitor how they are doing in their schools, in their families. We have to write a monthly report,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We monitor the students on a monthly basis and we come and visit the families face-to-face on a bimonthly basis to make sure everything is ok.â&#x20AC;?

Rowe said that families can sometimes be skeptical about hosting a student, but she is confident that ISEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strict regulations and the careful monitoring by local coordinators ensure for a safe and enlightening experience for both the host families and the students. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sometimes you can be skeptical because there are many things going on around the world,â&#x20AC;? Rowe said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You can be worried about the safety of your family, but I can assure you, this is a program that has been going on for decades.

Favorite reading material: â&#x20AC;&#x153;If I tell you that I read the Bible more than anything else, would you believe me?

I do that because every time I read it I learn new things. In a verse that I have read before that I probably understand, I re-read and I have a revelation. Christian literature is one of my favorites.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sponsored by the USDS. We are very demanding of the students that we work with; they are very well screened. We also screen the families because we want to make sure we connect the right people.â&#x20AC;?

Overall, Rowe believes that the program offers an amazing opportunity on both ends of the spectrum, creating cultural tolerance and awareness. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of the ways to contribute to the peace of the world is to open your home and to learn more about other cultures, to give [families] that opportunity to learn more about other cultures and what is beyond the United States; cultural awareness,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It also may lead to your kids to want to study abroad. I think that when raising our children, that tolerance and that opened mindedness to treat people from other cultures the same way, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very important. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the spirit of being part of a community. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the whole world connected.â&#x20AC;?

Participation is a responsibility We recently met with a city council member up for re-election in May. His name and municipality of service are not germane to this discussion. What does matter, though, is the topic of voter participation, or, perhaps, voter apathy. He allows that the failure to exercise the right and responsibility to cast votes can be traced to the home. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in agreement. Back in the day, it was something of a rite of passage to gain a voterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s registration card. Back then, voting was way less about politics than it was about having your voice heard. We suspect, as did the visiting council member, that the issue isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even a blip on most familiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; radar screens â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a shame. Prior to each election, primary or general, we always include a reminder to get out and vote. Looking at voter-participation numbers, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve concluded the message was unimportant to many. We asked our visitor about immersion - in community; in issues; in, yes, politics. The councilorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s belief is the same as ours: Most among us would prefer to sit on the sidelines than play the game, as it were. Most all want a solution, but fewer seem to be willing to roll up their sleeves and become a part of it. Former Congressman Lee Hamilton (D-Ind.) adroitly sums this up in a recent op-ed, in which he writes, â&#x20AC;&#x153;You canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t study every issue, but you can pick one and dig in, whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a big problem like climate change or a smaller one, such as how to get food delivered to shut-ins in your community.â&#x20AC;? The point is, voting, like getting involved in endeavors that move the community forward, has to be a conscious decision.

We live in an age of excess. Government is getting bigger. Everything on the Kardashians is getting bigger. TVâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s are getting bigger. Supersize seems to be the new medium. More. Bigger.

Faster. Is it human nature to covet exceeding last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s accomplishments? Competition and continuous improvement are virtuous endeavors.

It is good to seek to enhance and upgrade routinely. But do we sometimes mistake growth for advancement? When is our desire for extra an excess?

Collectively, we eat too much and the data shows it. Portion sizes have bloated to unprecedented levels. Some would argue that we con-

sume too much of everything â&#x20AC;&#x201C; food, fuel, natural resources, health care, to name a few. We drive ourselves to ever out-do what came before. It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t that long ago that a 30-inch television was an amazing luxury. Now, it is disposable.

And, life marches on.

What is the cost of our need for more? Certainly, Americans struggle to save money. Our savings rates, compared to consumption, are abysmal. Also, our sports are now â&#x20AC;&#x153;extremeâ&#x20AC;? and our parties epic. Likewise our waistlines are buckling under the long-term effect. With March returns St. Patrickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day and its celebration often includes a good deal of beer, Jamesonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and jocularity. But in a culture where more is more, can we hope to survive the party in tact? If amateur drinkers are the most dangerous, arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t we better off to stay home on amateur night?

You wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe what I did over the weekend. My four sisters and I auditioned for the Family Feud! The Family Feud! And not to boast, but I really believe we have a shot at making it on to the show. Seriously, by summer, I could be blowing my fifth of a hundred grand on a Caribbean cruise!

My youngest sister Emily has always wanted to be on the Feud, and when she saw they were coming to Columbus, Ohio, my sister Christinaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hometown, she convinced the rest of us to join her. My twin flew in from L.A., another sister came from Louisville, and Em drove over from Chicago. Five gorgeous gingers, all closet actresses? Puh-lease. How could we not make it?

The actual audition consisted of a mock game between us and another family in front of two hundred other Feud hopefuls. We made a grand entrance from the back of the Radissonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ballroom, high-fiving strangers and throwing admittedly-crooked cartwheels. Emily introduced us and then we got down to business. First question? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Name something people like to eat â&#x20AC;Ś â&#x20AC;? DING! Emily rang in and shouted â&#x20AC;&#x153;French fries!â&#x20AC;? Rachel, our host, yelled back â&#x20AC;&#x153;Eeeehhh!â&#x20AC;? She hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t finished. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Name something people like to eat in slices.â&#x20AC;? Fortunately our opponents responded with â&#x20AC;&#x153;potatoes,â&#x20AC;? which made no sense whatsoever. We played.

Christina said â&#x20AC;&#x153;pizza,â&#x20AC;? the number one answer on the board, and my third sister got buzzed for â&#x20AC;&#x153;watermelonâ&#x20AC;? although we all felt it was a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Good answer!â&#x20AC;? My twin said â&#x20AC;&#x153;orangesâ&#x20AC;? (correct) and then I drew a complete blank.

Stalling, I said â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rachel. I. Am. Going. To. Go. Withâ&#x20AC;ŚPie!â&#x20AC;? Shoo! And of course I pronounced it â&#x20AC;&#x153;pahâ&#x20AC;? to emphasize my southern roots. Back to Emily, who said â&#x20AC;&#x153;apples,â&#x20AC;? and then to Christina who immediately dropped to the floor and did the worm. THE WORM. Right there, on camera.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why the casting director invited us for a private interview. That and the fact that we were complete spazzes. I nearly threw a hip jumping up and down and could barely speak afterwards from all the screaming. I hope to God I never see that footage!

Upstairs, they asked for interesting facts about ourselves. Christina obviously performed the worm again (She has four kids!); my twin told of her appearance in the worst-rated Super Bowl commercial of all times (1998, Coke, Redheads, Google it); and I explained how I once sucked an eyeball from a rabbitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s skull during Air Force survival training. Pure TV gold, right?

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find out in two weeks if weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be heading to Atlanta to tape. And rest assured, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll detail every minute of my rise to stardom on the Feud. Survey says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Peace out!â&#x20AC;?

Understanding the deflation dilemma Commentary by Joe Clark The Baby Boomer generation witnessed hyperinflation in the 1980’s with 30 year mortgages peaking at 18 percent in 1980.

MONEY Investors in this era saw CD rates top 14 percent and watched home ownership become almost unattainable for the average family. Inflation has always been on the fear monitor, leaving deflation as a non-event.

A classic definition of inflation is, “too many dollars chasing too few of goods”. Today, the great concern of many is that monetary easing across the globe could lead to dramatic forms of inflation seen in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Simply put, a lot of cash has been added with little chasing of the goods and services.

What has happened to create such a situation? Exhibit one is the spike in asset prices, especially here at home with the U.S. stock market. We are now paying a multiple near 17 times and perhaps 18 times trailing earnings on the SP 500. That is a frothy price not seen since previous market peaks and such valuation most likely comes from access to easy cash and limited desire to buy other things. But money has to go somewhere.

Currently, the US economy is declining .1 percent in terms of year-over-year consumer pric-

es-- a negative number. Fortunately, we are at 1.6 percent year-over-year on what economists consider the core rate. In November 2014, we had 10 countries with negative year-over-year inflation. In December we moved to 13 such countries and January saw the number hit 18.

The inflation of the Weimar Republic of Germany in the 1920s and the hyperinflation witnessed in the U.S. 35 years ago still generates fear among those of us who lived through the fallout.

We haven’t seen or felt the impact of deflation.

The issues associated with deflation and its economic consequences are dramatically different and the Federal Reserve Chairman goes to bed nightly praying for inflation near 2 percent. Deflation is her nightmare.

You must consider the impact of declining prices worldwide when you look at your portfolio. The impact of inflation or deflation extends way beyond the prices you pay at the pump or the store.

Picking the room's correct lighting needs

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to look beyond the ceiling fan. When it comes to lighting up the room via overhead lights, many homeowners choose standard, boring and often ineffective ceiling INDOORS fixtures. This is a real missed opportunity in terms of design.

Ceiling light fixtures are key decorative elements that many homeowners tend to gloss over when building or remodeling a space. Not only do they properly illuminate the room, but carefully chosen lighting fixtures can also tie together various design elements together.

The first step in choosing an effective ceiling light is analyzing the specific lighting needs of the room. Kitchens often require very bright lighting to make cooking and entertaining easier.

Bedrooms may require dimmer lights to create a relaxing, comforting atmosphere. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll also need to take into account the amount of natural lighting thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s already present. Rooms without a great deal of natural lighting may require brighter lights to compensate.
