Solar group earns ‘Sustainable’ award

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com When Solarize Hamilton County realized Senate Bill 309 would alternative energy reduce the benefits to solar energy users, the nonprofit took action, meriting its recent recognition of “Sustainable Champion of the Year.”

“When the governor signed it into law in May, we realized that because of that bill, that some people, to get the max amount of benefits from investing in solar, had to invest in solar before the end of the year, which is why we decided to start Solarize Hamilton County,” said Leslie Webb, president of the Carmel Green Initiative. “We think schools and churches and the community should have the right to harvest energy from the sun on their own property and get fair credit for energy or electricity.”

Solarize Hamilton County teamed with local mayors and presented at Carmel and Westfield public libraries on the benefits of solar energy.

It also partnered with the cities of Fishers and Noblesville.

Solarize Hamilton County and the 12 other groups comprising Solarize Indiana received the “Sustainable Champion of the Year” award Dec. 2 from the Hoosier Environment Council.

Throughout the year, SHC visited 310 homes in the county, resulting in 21 new solar homes. To end the year, SHC made sure each home followed through with solar plans. New solar homes in the

“We’re just making sure the people who signed the contract to get solar installed this year get it done this year,” Webb said. “That’s so important, according to the bill. We are making sure all get done in time.”

• Improvements are underway to rehabilitate bridges, pavement and drainage structures along 15 miles of I-69. Two lanes have been shifted to accommodate construction of travel lanes. The speed limit has been reduced to 60 mph and to 50 mph while workers are present.

• Hamilton County Highway Dept. has closed Cyntheanne Road between 146th Street and 156th Street through December to replace the bridge over Keiser Drain. Anyone with questions should contact Hamilton County Highway Dept. at 317-773-7770.

GEIST • The left, southbound lane of I-69 between Exit 219 near Pendleton and Cyntheanne Road in Fishers is currently closed for general construction work.

• On I-69, between Exit 205 near 116th Street in Fishers and Exit 219 near Ind. 38 in Pendleton, drivers should watch for major nighttime construction work for a bridge reconstruction. Speed limits may be reduced.

• U.S. 36 in both directions will have periodic lane restrictions and delays near I-465, between Pendleton Pike and W. County Line Rd. near Lawrence for a culvert replacement.

CARMEL • A water main upgrade is under way on Range Line Road between City Center and Executive drives. Once the water main is relocated, traffic will move to the inner lanes of Range Line Road for work on the outer lanes. The road will remain open throughout the project.

WESTFIELD • Resurfacing projects are continuing throughout the city. These projects include Joliet Road, Catherine Drive, Greyhound Pass from 151st to Western Way, Greyhound Court, Spring Meadows subdivision and half of Pine Ridge and Quail Ridge subdivisions.

• Utility relocations are currently happening. The project will be completed by the end of the year. The project includes construction of a roundabout at 186th Street and Spring Mill Road and a new boulevard roadway construction to Kinsey Avenue.

• Towne Road reconstruction includes three new culverts, widening and vertical sight distance corrections. Utility relocations will begin next month and construction will begin this fall. The project is expected to be complete by summer or fall of next year. Resurfacing Towne Road from 116th street to 156th Street will begin after the New Year.

• The Monon trail is being extended from 191st to 216th streets. Most of the work will begin after the New Year.

• The second phase of the riparian corridor for Grand Junction Park and Plaza will begin construction before the end of the year and most of the work will be done over the winter months when the water is frozen.

ZIONSVILLE/WHITESTOWN • C.R. 400 S./425 S. is closed between C.R. 650 E. and 750 E, as crews work on the 300 S./400 S. connector project in east Whitestown. Two lanes are under construction, although ultimately it is planned to be a four-lane, divided roadway. The project is expected to continue into 2018.

Residents also will see expanded and enhanced programming in the city’s parks department as well as aesthetic infrastructure improvements around town with road, sidewalk and streetlight projects in the works.

“We’ll of course again have our ever-growing Public Safety Day, which we’ve now moved the infamous chicken-wing-eating contest (between the police and fire departments) to that day,” Collier said. “We always have a big crowd.”

“There’s one project that I can’t officially announce yet, but if you drive by it, you’ll see it in the works,” Collier said. “Someone is moving in at the corner of 59th Street and Sunnyside Road.”

“We are going to bring back the farmers market again,” Collier said. “It was a big success last year. (It’s) something I think that the residents, especially in (the central) part of the city, appreciate. That will probably grow with some additional produce vendors so we have a more consistent produce presence. The first year of the market struggled the first couple of weeks with getting fresh produce from Indiana.

We’ll look at having some come from Kentucky and Tennessee.”

UCI trail study

Earlier this year, UCI did a city-wide trail

study for Lawrence.

“Essentially, what we’re trying to do is build trails to link all parts of the city to the city center,” Collier said. “The City of Lawrence, I think, is already in the top five greenest cities in Indiana, so trails aren’t quite as big of a deal to us as they are to some other communities, but we do have some connectivity issues, especially in the northeastern part of the city and connecting it to central Lawrence. The trail study is showing us that we’ll have to add a couple of new trails and purchase some right of way.

That could happen as early as this summer.”

INFRASTRUCTURE

New equipment “We have had several new (pieces of) equipment purchased, including two more battalion vehicles, (and) I believe two ambulances that are going to be purchased this year,” Collier said. “We did also put 12 new police cars in the fleet, and that will just become kind of an ongoing thing. Our police cars won’t get any older than five years. This is the second year of that.”

ROADS Paving projects

“We have paving projects that have already been scheduled,” Collier said. “Those will occur as soon as the weather breaks, probably the middle to end of March.”

Two paving projects will take place along two sections of Mitthoeffer Road between 46th Street and Pendleton Pike.

Sidewalk improvements

Collier said the city’s sidewalk project is ongoing. It involves going into neighborhoods and fixing heaved sidewalks. A tool called a mudjacker will be used.

“They actually take a hydraulically pumped-in mix of concrete-like material that they can actually drill a hole in the sidewalk, pump it up and even it out,” Collier said. “We started doing that this summer, and we’re still doing it whenever the weather allows us to.”

Utility rate changes

In May, the City of Lawrence made changes to increase the cost of its utility. “(The increase) has resulted in several very positive things for the city this year,” Collier said. “No. 1, our utility is back on solid ground, and it will be for the foreseeable future. We were able to get our utility bond rating up from junk bond status to investment grade.

That ended up saving us about $2.5 million, which will go right back into the utility.”

Streetlights

Approximately $100,000 of the city’s 2018 operating budget has been set aside for streetlight replacement.

“Streetlights have been ignored for too long in the city, and so we’re catching up and fixing that, which should be a major improvement,” Collier said.

Collier said the older parts of the city are areas in which the most streetlights are out, and those will be the first to be replaced or repaired. Lights also will be replaced with energy-efficient LEDs. “We think maybe we can get all of our lights replaced by the end of (2018),” Collier said.

Richardt Water Plant

“Richardt Water Plant is being completely rebuilt,” Collier said. “When it’s done, it will be able to supply all the water for the city in just one plant. The nice thing about Richardt is that it sits on top of one of the largest aquifers in central Indiana.”

Sterrett Center remodel

“The Strerrett Center is in the midst of a remodel,” Collier said. “We’re going to paint the outside. The interior will be a major upgrade and remodel.”

Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness has announced the development of an IoT (Internet of Things) Lab in Fishers on Visionary Way. The lab would be the first of its kind in Indiana and possibly the Midwest.

Internet of Things is the application of internet to various devices, according to the city’s announcement. The lab is estimated to encompass 24,000 square feet with a makerspace and space for meetings and offices.

“We’ll be opening and cutting the ribbon at the Internet of Things Lab in the first quarter,” Fadness said. “Hopefully, we will have a great grand opening next spring.

The first two restaurants for The Yard, a 17-acre, $40 million culinary district to be built near 116th Street and I-69, were recently announced. St. Elmo Steakhouse subsidiary restaurants Burger Study and 1933 Lounge will set up shop, with a groundbreaking scheduled for the second quarter of 2018. The restaurants have plans to open in 2019.

“That’s going to be in July of (2019), and not only are we bringing a piece of St. Elmo to Fishers, but we’re also going to open up our adult burger concept at Burger Study.”

St. Elmo isn’t the only big announcement The Yard has planned.

“Next year, we will break ground on The Yard, and between now and the breaking ground we anticipate having several announcements on restaurants and details put around the culinary incubator and accelerator through next year,” Fadness said.

Other developments Other developments expected to continue in 2018 include Knowledge Services and the new police station opening in August. Knowledge Services will break ground at its site near 106th Street and I-69 this year. The $17 million development was announced in June 2017 and is expected to bring 400 jobs to the area.

“We broke a record this year with nearly 2,200 new jobs and $60 million in (capital) investments,” Fadness said. “My goal for economic development (in 2018), it’s a reach, but hopefully we can break that record again. There’s a lot of belief Fishers is the right place to do business, and hopefully that equates to more and more economic activity.”

In God We Trust Commentary by Terry Anker This time of year, we become reacquainted with old friends and family, remembering why we love and miss them. But also, we may remember why we only see them on holidays!

All the same, winter brings out in us an innate desire to reaffirm traditions of all sorts. We search high and low for the “right” sweet potatoes for pie. We love the treat and couldn’t imagine a year without it. Yet, we never seem to miss it the other 364 days of the calendar. Food, decorations and song work our collective memories.

They connect us to each other and to our past. Even more so, we scan the channels seeking the reaffirming and redundant broadcast of our favorite movies and specials. How can the 25th viewing be more powerful than the previous 24?

One favorite, “A Christmas Story,” is adapted from humorist and author Jean Shepherd’s book, “In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash.” Loosely based on his childhood home in Hammond, Ind., the story is that of youthful desire. Yet, it elegantly lays out the hopes and dashed desires of the protagonist’s “old man” as well. Even as he misses the top prize, he cherishes the one he does receive.

Likewise, no one thinks Ralphie to be incomplete without a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200 Shot Range Model Air Rifle. Still, they suspend their legitimate concerns about his safety to support his long-held dream.

Even as we know that our only complete trust may be reserved for our maker, we work to find trust in those around us. Reliability, support and love may not substitute for trust. But, aren’t they close enough?

Every Christmas, my four sisters and I struggle to come up with a present for our parents. Often we go solo, one humor framing a picture of the grandkids and another giving a gift card to their favorite restaurant. But this year, divine inspiration hit the youngest, and we magnificently delivered on what will certainly go down as the Best Christmas Present ever. We gave them a golf cart!

First, some backstory. My parents have lived in the same house for 45 years. In 2014, the middle sister found the perfect home, directly across the street from Mom and Dad. They are so close that though impractical, a zip line between the two is feasible. Then this past May, our baby sister moved from Chicago, around the corner and five doors down. Dad often jokes that if this were Monopoly, they’d only need one more for a hotel. So, half of my family lives within 200 yards of each other in what is slowly becoming a compound.

Enter the golf-cart! Middle Sister braved a potential Facebook Marketplace murderer from Carollton, Ky., to purchase an obviously used four-seater, only to have the windshield blow off on her way back. I nearly rammed the thing through a neighbor’s fence as we prepared for the big reveal.

But it was all worth it when my parents were lured outside with lies of carolers and saw it barreling down the street, decked in colored lights and a bow. Mom’s joy in particular was priceless. Now, they can visit and transport grandkids even when hobbled while being the coolest old people on the block.

Best Christmas present ever!

Local man writes book exploring brain disease

By Renee Larr • news@currentinfishers.com Virginia native Terry McCarthy has always had a passion Alzheimer’s for writing. When he moved to Fishers in May, he decided to delve deeper into that passion.

“I'm a (retired) military intelligence analyst by my official duty. I have done a lot of writing ever since I was done with the service. I like to put things down on paper,” McCarthy said.

He’s also written a book called “Fighting Alzheimer’s Disease” that shines a light on the growing issue in older adults. The book explores steps to maintain cognitive skills and wellness.

“The book focuses on an endemic disease that is taking the country by storm,” McCarthy said. “The basic cause of an increase in Alzheimer’s AD is that medical science and treatments have been so effective that they have overcome or cured the maladies and diseases that normally caused people to die earlier in life. Now, due to this wonderful medical care, everyone is living a lot longer.”

ZCHS grad produces rock musical

The first time Zach Rosing was asked to help with a theater production, he was sure he was the theater wrong man for the job.

By the time the run concluded, he was sure theater production was in his blood.

“I first got involved in producing theater in 2008, when a friend asked me to help with Rosing a local independent production of the musical ‘Bare,’” Rosing said. “I wasn’t much of a theater person before that, and I’m certainly not an actor, but I realized the various skills from my video and media production business translated very well to theater.

“I made a lot of great friends, and from there I was hooked.”

He still is.

A 2001 graduate of Zionsville Community High School, Rosing has produced more than 20 shows since 2008. His most recent effort is the rock musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” which begins an eight-performance run Jan. 5 at the Epilogue Players Theatre in Indianapolis.

“For ‘Hedwig,’ I’m in charge of a variety of responsibilities, including assembling a staff, money, marketing, including tak-

ing photos and designing artwork, securing the venue, ticketing, etc.,” Rosing said. “Basically, all the behind-the-scenes administrative stuff. I’m also the sound designer for the show.”

A longtime Zionsville resident who moved to Indianapolis a few years ago, Rosing has worked on his own productions and done others for theater companies. He is a three-time winner of NUVO’s Best Locally Produced Play for his work on “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” “The Great Bike Race” and “The Gab.” He is producing “Hedwig” for the second time.

A stage musical that opened OffBroadway in 1998, “Hedwig” tells the fictional tale of Hedwig Schmidt, an East German “rock goddess” who makes it over the Berlin Wall after a botched sexchange operation and learns “a thing or two” about life along the way. The cast includes Tim Hunt (who is also the associate producer) as Hedwig Schmidt and Kate Homan as Yitzhak.

Rosing last produced “Hedwig” in 2014.

“I’m excited to revisit it in an intimate, 50-seat venue,” Rosing said. “We always try to surpass expectations for what a nomadic theater company can produce.

Audiences should expect an evening they’ll never forget. Also, it will be loud.”

Songbook applications due March 25 editorial@youarecurrent.com The Great American Songbook Foundation’s nationwide application process for its 2018 Songbook Academy summer intensive program is under way. The music and performance program for high school students is led by Foundation founder and five-time Grammy Award nominee Michael Feinstein.

The weeklong Songbook Academy is the only high school intensive in the U.S. focused on jazz standards and classic Broadway and Hollywood songs, known as the Great American Songbook. The academy is scheduled for July 21 to 28 at the Songbook Foundation’s headquarters, the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

U.S. high school students are invited to submit videos with performances of two contrasting songs from the Great American Songbook genre. The 2018 application deadline is March 25.

Forty students nationwide are selected each year for this opportunity to participate in workshops and masterclasses.

“These young peoples’ lives are forever changed by the experience, and they stay bonded to each other,” Feinstein stated in a press release. “Whether they become professional musicians or not is not the point.

The goal is just to give them the joy of experiencing this music, and the eloquence and beauty of the emotions and feelings that are expressed in it.”

Before

Background info: This home west of Indianapolis was built in the 1950s as a custom model home. Although the home had many great characteristics, it needed many updates to bring the interior and exterior up-to-date.

Before problems The original kitchen was very small and narrow, making it difficult for the owner to host guests and limiting flow into the living area.

Several of the bathrooms in the home had original tile, cabinetry and plumbing fixtures. The outdoor living space lacked many of the details that the owners desired.

After

The goal was to create more space and to update multiple rooms of the home while keeping a cohesive design.

1. The original galley-style kitchen lacked the space the owner desired. By relocating an interior wall, the kitchen footprint was expanded, allowing enough space to put in a large island for casual seating.

2. Replacing all cabinetry, countertops, hardware and appliances gave the kitchen the modern update it needed.

3. To make the laundry room a more functional space, cabinetry and shelving for storage was added.

4. On the exterior of the home, the pergola was replaced with a much larger freestanding pavilion structure that housed an outdoor kitchen, fireplace and a TV, giving the homeowner plenty of room to entertain.
