Food drive a success – David Weekley Homes hosted its second annual Thanksgiving Drive, collecting an aggregate of 147,000 pounds of turkey and nonperishable items in 20 participating markets. The company’s efforts provided more than 149,000 meals to local families. Indianapolis team members delivered the items to Second Helpings, Inc. to distribute to families in time for the holiday.

In addition, Second Helpings, Inc. received a $6,000 donation from the David Weekley Family Foundation.

AED’s donated – On Dec. 12, Bolt For The Heart (BFTH) foundation continued to deliver on the promise to equip Indiana State Police patrol vehicles with lifesaving Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) by presenting a gift of 95 AED’s. This was in addition to the more than 50 AED’s presented to ISP in March of this year. To date, 215 AED’s have been gifted to the Indiana State Police from the BFTH foundation.

Restoration award nominations – Indiana Landmarks seeks nominations for the annual Cook Cup for Outstanding Restoration. The prize goes to the owner of a historic structure that has been restored following the highest standards in method, materials and design.

Eligible owners include individuals, companies, nonprofit organizations, institutions and government entities. Anyone may submit a nomination -- the owner, architect, engineer, contractor, neighbor, appreciative citizen. Nomination forms are available at bit.ly/ILawards. New child care finder service – The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration has announced a new, online tool to assist families in finding child care and early education providers for their children throughout the state. Shop for Kids leaves children happy during the holidays

As the holiday season wraps up and a new year quickly approaches, the 2016 tax year comes to an end as well. While it may feel too early to be thinking about taxes, a topic that is sometimes overlooked in family law matters is the determination as to which parent shall be allowed to claim the children as dependents on their State and Federal Income tax returns in any given year.

While it may have once been common for Judges to order the parents to alternate claiming the children, under the Indiana Child Support Rules and Guidelines the objective is to achieve an order which will make the most money available for the children.

Therefore, there is no certainty that in each case the parties will be ordered to alternate claiming the children. However, keep in mind, that when a Court is determining an order to release the tax exemption, there are several factors that can be considered. The following factors include: (1) the value of the exemption at the marginal tax rate of each parent; (2) the income of each parent; (3) the age of the child(ren) and how long the exemption will be available; (4) the percentage of the cost of supporting the child(ren) born by each parent; (5) the financial aid benefit for post-secondary education for the child(ren); (6) the financial burden assumed by each parent under the property settlement in the case; and (7) any other relevant factors,(including health insurance tax subsidies or tax penalties under the Affordable Care Act).

One imperative factor that parents must understand is that the Decree of Dissolution or Court’s Order may not alone, by itself, be adequate to effectuate the terms in the Decree with respect to each parent’s ability to claim the children as dependents. Remember, in

order for the noncustodial parent to claim the child(ren) on her/his tax return, the custodial parent must execute the IRS Form 8332, thereby relinquishing her/his right to claim the children as dependants for that tax year. In general, the Courts cannot order that one party has the right to claim the children, but rather that one party must take all steps necessary in order for the other party to claim the children in a certain year, such as signing the IRS Form 8332. Additionally, signing the release is often contingent upon child support being current for the calendar year for which the exemption is ordered, as incentive to keep child support payments current. In fact, the Indiana Child Support Rules and Guidelines indicates in order for the parent who is obligated to pay child support and wants to claim the exemption, that parent must have paid at least ninety-five percent (95%) of their court ordered support for the calendar year in which the exemption is sought by January 31st of the following year. Thus, in order for the child support paying parent to claim the exemption in 2016, that parent must be at least 95% current by January 31, 2017.

So, while taxes can be a nightmare in and of themselves, hopefully with discussion and thoughtful planning, the child tax exemption doesn’t have to be included in that headache. A rabbit caused a stir when it appeared as a visual in an information speech given by his owner, Ryan Robb, at Ivy Tech’s Noblesville campus last month. “F7” posed patiently as Robb, Fishers, explained the life of a show rabbit to his class. Robb’s family travels nationwide with their rabbits to compete. Robb explained that show rabbits typically are given a “name” with a letter and a number for identification purposes. However, his classmates, who had already appointed the pink-eyed buck as the class mascot, quickly objected and launched a contest to give the bunny a new handle. Dozens of submissions were considered, and by the end of the contest, the name Ozzy was chosen. Feeling grateful over the holidays Commentary by Mike Colaw Talk about this over the holidays with your families. religion What if I told you the way you think could physically change your brain chemistry? You would probably think I was lying. We are who we are, right? Well, that’s not exactly true. Yes, there are dispositions that different personalities lean toward, but your attitude, and dare I say personality, is more pliable than you think.

There is emerging evidence that the mind can be shaped through a thinking exercise.

Here is where it starts to sound too good to be true. The research shows that a specific thinking (and talking) process can reduce physical aches and pains, depression, anxiety and improve sleep.

So, what is it? Gratitude. Yep, being grateful. Don’t think of gratitude as a feeling, but a way of choosing to view the world. Gratitude can precede an emotional response. You can choose to think and talk gratefully and the

body, over time, will begin to feel grateful.

Even more amazing is when modern science supports something a 2,000-year-old text has been saying. Paul, in the book of Romans chapter 12, teaches that thinking in the way of Jesus Christ, the way of hope and love, can “renew” your mind. Now we know objectively and scientifically that this is true!

So, this holiday season when you are sitting around the table with friends and family, take a moment to think and talk with gratitude. Try this question, “What are you most grateful for and why are you grateful for it?” The greatest gift you give your family may end up being a way of thinking.

Maybe try this New Year’s resolution: Every morning take a moment to write out two or three things you are grateful for in a notebook.

The City of Fishers announced a $40 million private investment culinary and entertainment center called The Yard earlier this month, and the city council unanimously approved an economic development agreement with developer Thompson Thrift Retail Group at its Dec. 19 meeting.

The city also will master lease two 1,500-square-foot buildings or one 3,000-square-foot building to be used as a culinary or restaurant accelerator. Brandon George Dickinson with the Economic and Community Development Department introduced the project to the council at its first reading.

Dickinson said the city would have a very low investment with the master lease, with a payment of $1 per year.

“That gives the city and its citizens opportunities to bring some really interesting concepts that might not have thought about DeReamer Fishers previously,” Dickinson said.

The 17 acres is unincorporated into the City of Fishers and considered to be part of the Delaware Township community.

Part of the process is annexing the land into the city before development can begin. The economic development agreement plan with Thompson Thrift Retail Group will include the establishment of a tax increment financing district consisting of the previously unincorporated parcels, and issue economic develop-

ment bonds available to the developer. The bonds are anticipated at approximately $7.1 million. A waiver of impact fees also was included in the agreement.

“As a long-time Fishers resident, I have seen tremendous opportunity to develop a project like this that has a restaurantheavy focus,” said Ashlee Boyd, managing partner with Thompson Thrift. “I don’t believe there’s anything to this scale being done with a culinary accelerator concept like this (in the state).”

Although the council approved the economic development agreement, it did not vote on the planned unit development that would rezone 18 acres from residential to commercial. A vote

At the heart of the development would be the culinary accelerator(s) with an approximate one acre of green space. In that green space, Steve Harden, an attorney representing developer Thompson Thrift Retail Group, said could be food trucks. The food trucks could become part of a “Food Truck Tuesday” or a program of a similar nature.

In addition to the food trucks, Hardin said there are two permitted uses of drive-thru windows, not including food trucks or the culinary accelerator. City councilor David George didn’t agree with that specific concept.

“I would rather see zero,” he said of the drive-thrus. “It’s a partnership, and we are helping out and trying to ramp this up.”

Although multiple councilors expressed concern about drive-thru restaurants, a vote was not taken on drive-thrus. annexing the acreage into Fishers also was not yet taken.

Steve Hardin, an attorney representing Thompson Thrift, mentioned that many chefs hoping to start a new business do not have access to commercial-grade kitchen equipment.

“Chefs will have the opportunity to bring friends and family out to see what does or doesn’t work,” Hardin said. “They can move to a larger space within the accelerator and eventually grow into a permanent space elsewhere in the project. Thompson Thrift is really excited for these 10 to 12 restaurants that will be enhanced with the (culinary) accelerator.”

Details of the culinary accelerator are not finalized, but a press release from the City of Fishers stated that Mayor Scott Fadness asked the Indiana Restaurant and Lodging Association to assist in the concept development.

Currently, there are 28 homes on the acreage planned for the development, but the homes will be razed after annexation and the rezoning is approved. City councilor Brad DeReamer said the homeowners were paid a premium well above the appraised value of their homes. City council did not specify what that value was.

Dickinson said there is not a specific date when the project is expected to be completed, but there are specific dates for deadlines along the way to keep development on track.

Have hope as ’17 dawns Here we are - some would say thankfully - nearing the end of 2016. For our community, it mostly was a fine year, especially in terms of progressive growth and development as well as infrastructure improvements we couldn’t have imagined even 10 years ago. Our “world” is changing, and it is doing so for the better, we believe. Outside the local environs it was tumultuous, to say the least. The presidential election was a shock to many on both sides of the aisle, but the run-up to Nov. 8 was a war-torn effort that was equally, if not more so, a train wreck. We once termed primary season a clown show; that didn’t do it justice.

With apologies to our soon-to-be former first lady who said she doubts otherwise, we all should retain some sense of hope that what is wrong in our midst will be made whole at some point soon. Without hope, what is there? We prefer to not even contemplate that. In life, we’re often told to play the hand we’re dealt, and doing so really is as simple as this equation: E+R=O, or event plus response equals outcome. We believe if you seek the bad, probably it will be bad, and if you seek the good, probably it will be good. People have pointed fingers at us for focusing on “bad things.” We do that on occasion in the interest of protecting our readers’ rights. So as we prepare to turn yet another calendar page, we’re hoping for the good - with stability - and all things growth in 2017. A drop of whiskey Commentary by Terry Anker Often, when meeting a person of some renown, we are deeply disappointed. Yet, in other precious encounters, our already high expectations are exceeded and overcome by the distinctive and important comportment of our hero. Such was the occasion in a recent exchange with famed author and television commentator Doris Kearns Goodwin. With best-selling books including “Team of Rivals” on Abraham Lincoln and “The Bully Pulpit” about Theodore Roosevelt, Goodwin is a bona fide success story. She has earned a place as the preeminent commentator on the American presidency and its place in our culture — and that of the modern and evolving world.

Thanks to the annual legislative conference of law firm Bingham Greenbaum and Doll, The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site and Indiana Humanities hosted an interview and discussion with Goodwin during her recent visit. Invited to moderate the talk, I had occasion to interact and see her in action. Affable and open, she reflected on what

history can teach us regarding expansive current topics, including our natural desire to leave a legacy, the impact of fake news and the importance of common understanding to effective communication.

Goodwin spoke honestly about her concerns for our present — and for our future.

We considered the general loss of confidence in the institutions upon which we’ve built the very foundations of our nation. She told stories that gave us pause, and confidence, that the future is ours to shape. But we must hang on to a bit of humor to get us through the difficult patches. Goodwin quoted her most famous subject, Abraham Lincoln, thusly, “A good story is better than a drop of whiskey.” She has a point. But then again, doesn’t it depend on the story and, more importantly, on the whiskey?

The unthinkable has happened, people.

I’ve lost my calendar! My reliable, omnipotent, executive planner is humor GONE. And though I’m pretty sure it’s sitting on a shelf next to clearance candles at Bed Bath & Beyond, a phone call proved otherwise.

What am I to do?

I’m not exaggerating when I say that calendar is the only reason this family functions at a reasonably acceptable level. Appointments, practices, rehearsals, meetings, birthdays, games, competitions, parties, deadlines, surgeries, anniversaries — every single detail of our lives are in that calendar. In fact, if something fails to be placed in “the calendar,” it’s essentially dead to us.

It won’t be remembered, and it certainly won’t happen. It just won’t.

So I’m in full panic mode. I know two visits to the orthodontists are coming up, but I’m not sure which day or for which kid.

I also know January has eight family birthdays, and apart from my twin sister’s and my niece’s on the same day, I’ve got nothing! Sweet mercy, what am I to do?

Of course, my oldest thinks I’m silly for trusting such a monumental task to pen and paper when my phone could act more efficiently — and with better back-up capabilities. But I’m not going to lie. I look forward to sitting down at the start of each January and planning the year out. I like seeing how close spring break is. I like flipping to July and penciling in a prospective beach vacation. I like discovering what day Halloween falls on, and then considering whether a personal day will be in order. The experience isn’t the same on a Samsung 6.

More importantly, though, I love that my old calendars serve as physical reminders of the memories my family makes throughout the years. To know that when my kids grow up and have children of their own, I’ll be able to pull out 2016 and tell them all about their dad’s broken nose or their mom’s marching band championship. So I have to find that calendar. The alternative is unthinkable.

Home sales up 4.4 percent Commentary by Jim Litten Central Indiana’s residential real estate sales continue to grow, real estate according to statistics compiled by F.C. Tucker Company. In October, despite having 2,299 fewer homes on the market from which to choose, pended home sales increased 4.4 percent compared to October 2015. The average sales price increased 2.9 percent year-to-date to $187,867. In the 15-county region, only three counties showed a slight dip in average home prices.

Hamilton County’s pended sales increased 11.6 percent in October 2016 compared to October 2015. Prices have also increased by 3.2 percent over last year to an average of $285,825. The number of available homes for sale, however, continues to decline in the region; inventory in Hamilton County slid 10 percent in October, a drop of 189 homes available compared to this time last year.

In Fishers/Geist, the average home sales price increased 1.6 percent year-to-date to $267,333.

Inventory moved at a slower pace in Fishers/Geist in October 2016. Overall, homes sold

in 73 days – nine more days than this time last year.

Buyers in Fishers/Geist had fewer options available to them. Last month, 503 homes were available for sale – 24 fewer homes compared to October 2015.

Pended home sales have slightly increased in Fishers/Geist. In October 2016, 133 homes sold – an increase of three homes compared to October 2015.

Of the pended home sales in Fishers/ Geist last month, four were priced $500,000 to $999,999; 32 were priced $300,000 to $499,999; 39 were priced $200,000 to $299,999; 56 were priced $100,000 to $199,999 and two were priced below $99,999.

Attractive pricing and financing options have contributed to steady sales month over month. We’re optimistic about the future and don’t anticipate significant changes in either of those areas under a new administration.

Central Indiana Dance Ensemble hosted a tea party for guests before their outstanding performance of “The Nutcracker” at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center. The dancing, choreography and entire stage production was top-notch. I loved watching the little girl sitting next to me beam with excitement as she watched the famous ‘Nutcracker Battle’ and classic ‘Kingdom of Sweets’ dance scenes. It was a fantastic treat to see guest artist and Carmel native Jacob Pringle, along with Nick Posluszny (Carmel), Murphy Brazzell (Sheridan) and Lily Fife (Westfield) and 117 dancers, representing 49 schools in central Indiana. Each summer, the Great American Songbook Foundation brings together 40 of the nation’s top high school vocalists for its weeklong Songbook Academy and competition. Only concert one is named Songbook Youth Ambassador for the coming year, performing with Foundation founder Michael Feinstein at such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center.

At 8 p.m. Jan. 7, 2017, for the first time the foundation will welcome back all seven of its previous Ambassadors when the Center for the Performing Arts presents the inaugural Songbook Academy All-Stars concert, a special evening of music at the Palladium in Carmel. The participants, selected from hundreds of applicants nationwide, participate in workshops and master classes with world-class mentors, including Broadway veterans, Grammy winners, Emmy winners and educators from top college arts programs, led by five-time Grammy nominee Feinstein. The final competition performance takes place in the state-of-the art, acoustically superior Palladium concert hall for an audience of more than 1,000. Next year’s Songbook Academy will take place July 15-22, 2017, at the Palladium in Carmel.

Ruins of Shobak Castle Commentary by Don Knebel A Crusader castle approximately 130 miles south of Amman, Jordan, proved impenetrable but nonetheless vulnerable. Its travel capture ended with an unexpected gesture of wartime kindness.

On July 15, 1099, knights of the First Crusade captured Jerusalem from the Muslims and established the Kingdom of Jerusalem. In 1115, Baldwin I, the first king of Jerusalem, built an imposing stone fortress atop an isolated conical mountain east of the Jordan River to control trade between Damascus and the Red Sea. Named Krak de Montreal (Castle of the Royal Mountain) to reflect the king’s contribution to its construction, the fortress marked the eastern dividing line between Christian and Muslim territories. Because of its design and location, Krak de Montreal withstood a number of assaults. In 1187, after recapturing Jerusalem, Saladin began an 18-month siege of the fortress. Starving defenders exchanged their wives and children for food and reportedly went blind from lack of salt. Running out of both food and wives, the Christians sur-

rendered in May 1189. Saladin, known both for his skill in battle and magnanimity in victory, repatriated the wives and children.

The Mamelukes modified the fortress in the 14th century, and it gradually fell into disrepair.

The partially restored fortress, now known as Shobak Castle after its name in Arabic, lies in a still remote region along the highway that connects Amman to the Gulf of Aqaba. Visitors can see the remains of two churches from the Crusader period and large rocks used in unsuccessful efforts to attack the fortress with catapults. They also can see writings from the Quran carved in stone and a simple throne, both probably from the time of Saladin.

Medieval fortress ruins are not for everyone. But for anyone wanting to see a Crusader castle with an interesting history, Shobak Castle should be on the list.
