The Fishers Nickel Plate District Amphitheater presented the Celebration of Lights on Dec. 6 despite a heavy snowfall. The Town of FishHOLIDAYS ers, in partnership with the Fishers Chamber of Commerce, presented a live performance by the Fishers High School choirs, the much-anticipated arrival of Santa Claus and the lighting of the 20-foot tree. Fishers Rotary provided complimentary concessions throughout the event.

Winter Wonderland, set to run from 6 to 10 p.m. each night through Dec. 31. Heinzman Lights at Night provided 25 sparkling light displays that featured an animated Santa Claus, sleigh, reindeer and snowman, in addition to an old-fashioned holiday-caroler light display with ice skaters nearby on the lake. All of the pedestrian-friendly displays will be on display through the end of December, along with B105.7 Christmas music each night. The Winter Wonderland is free.

Timmer wins Player of the Year award – Hamilton Southeastern’s Kirsten Timmer, daughter of Craig and Susan Timmer, won Player of the Year honors (soccer’s equivalent to Mr. Basketball) from the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association. She was named the top senior player in the state at an honor banquet hosted by the association. In attendance were two IHSAA assistant commissioners as well as 900 other coaches, soccer players, and their families. Timmer also was selected as an All-American player from the National Soccer Coaches Association. Only two players in Indiana earned that distinction each year.

Kirsten will be presented her All-American award in Philadelphia at the NSCAA National convention in January.

Resident receives Ole Miss award – University of Mississippi student Emilyl Wikle of Fishers is among 28 University of Mississippi juniors and seniors selected for membership in the Columns Society. The 14 men and 14 women are serving as official hosts for the university during the 2013-2014 academic year.

Wikle is a junior elementary education major.

Housed in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the Columns Society promotes service, leadership and integrity as its core principles. Selection for membership is made through an application and interview process.

Moeller to run for City Council – Fishers resident Eric Moeller will run for the North Central District (District 3) seat on the new Fishers City Council in the May 2014 Republican primary election. Moeller is campaigning for City Council as a lifelong fiscal conservative.

Moeller stated: “To make sure Fishers remains one of the greatest places to live, work, and play it is essential for young professionals to actively engage in community leadership roles.” As a member of the Council, Moeller would work to ensure the efficient delivery of public services, strategic economic development and a deeper relationship between the community and HSE schools in order to maintain their excellence. Moeller is the finance manager at FORUM Credit Union, headquartered in Fishers, where he is responsible for managing a multi-million dollar investment portfolio. He and his wife, Beth, have a 1-yearold daughter, Sophie.

Students learn about Billericay

Billericay Park in Fishers is a popular place known for its playground and woods, plus the Splash Pad and, of course, the EDUCATION outstanding baseball fields. But how many people know that Billericay is named for a town in England? Billericay, Essex, England, is a Sister City to Fishers though the Sister Cities Association of Fishers.

Linda Hill, art teacher at Hoosier Road Elementary School in Fishers, noticed that her students didn’t know how Billericay Park came to acquire such an unusual name. “The kids that I teach would talk about playing ball at Billericay and they didn’t know why we have the name Billericay,� Hill said.

Hill was inspired to have her students learn about the connections between Billericay, England and Fishers.

Hill and the Billericay teacher decided to create a traveling art show. Hill’s fourth-grade students recently sent a collection of art projects to Buttsbury Junior High, and Hill said that artwork will arrive soon from the students in England. “What I’m trying to do is show the students they can have a partnership with these kids in Billericay that can last long after they’ve left HRE,� Hill said.

Doug Whisman is vice president of SCAFI and agreed there are many benefits to Hill’s students learning about Billericay.

“It gives them exposure to another culture and another country as well as connects them to another community,� Whisman said.

The woods at Billericay Park are named Norsey Woods, and there is a Norsey Woods in Billericay, England. Whisman mentioned this fact when he met with Linda Hill’s students. “The kids are fascinated by Norsey Woods,�

Whisman stated. “They had no idea it is named after a woods in England and it helps show them the world outside of school.�

Hill hopes the relationship between the two schools continues. “The kids seem to really enjoy it,� Hill said. “What I find interesting now is that when the kids see Billericay Park, they know what the name means and they understand the connection between Fishers, Indiana and Billericay, England.�

State Rep. Todd Huston (R-Fishers) was joined by legislators, staff and other state office holders in donating sporting equipCHARITY ment and other items to Special Olympics of Indiana recently at the Statehouse.

“Special Olympics Indiana is honored to be chosen by Speaker Bosma for Organization Day. Research has found that individuals with intellectual disabilities who participate in Special Olympics become more involved in their communities. Our over 11,000 athletes throughout Indiana live, work and vote in almost every county throughout the state,” said Special Olympics Indiana CEO/President Michael Furnish.

Special Olympics of Indiana is a nonprofit organization that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. These athletes represent 74 county and local programs each run by volunteer management teams who recruit participants, conduct sports training, raise money, build awareness and compete at local and state events.

“It was very humbling to have the staff and some of the athletes from Special Olympics Indiana join us at the Statehouse,” said Rep. Huston.

Always thankful for a lot

Commentary by Heather Kestian

I do not usually entertain internet memes, however, I made an exception during the month of November. Each day, I conPLAIN TALK sidered those people in my life for which I am thankful. I understand that some people see this as bragging about one’s life. I choose to see this differently—as an outward expression of thankfulness, particularly those who I sometimes forget to thank. This year, I committed to not just being thankful, but telling people how I feel.

After all, there is no time like the present. I learned this lesson the hard way earlier this year when a friend of mine, who was in his thirties, passed away very suddenly. The week prior to hearing of his passing, I had put meeting him for lunch on my to-do list. Sadly, I will never get to have that lunch.

The top of my list (which I will check twice, to prepare for the holidays): 1. I am thankful for my husband. He is my cheerleader, my confident, and the person who I both need and want in my life. He is funny, smart, and a darn good dad. He makes me want to be a better person.

2. I am thankful for my oldest child. The

things that come out of his mouth are priceless. There is nothing better than watching a miniature version of yourself develop in front of your eyes. He makes my heart swell with tears, both good tears (wow, he is funny, which means I am funny) and bad tears (do I really do that?).

3. I am thankful for my baby. Admission: he is not a baby anymore. I love that he orders me to sit on the carpet and read to him—a task I was always thankfully complete.

4. I am thankful for my friends and family, both near and far. Whether they are old and dear or new, I am thankful to have ears that will listen to me laugh and cry.

You know you have good friends and family when they know the sound your voice makes in the moments before you cry. I am thankful for these blessings.

I encourage you to express your gratitude to those in your life. You never know when you will not have the chance to do so.

At the recent Hamilton Southeastern School Board meeting, a proposed recommendation for iPads in classrooms was EDUCATION discussed by a team of teachers and students to show the board how instruction is changing in classrooms and what kinds projects students are creating.

Don Koewers and Josh TeGrotenjuis, teachers at Fall Creek Intermediate School, spoke via YouTube video of the benefits that students receive from learning with iPads as opposed to traditional classroom methods. The advantages they said they have seen are as follows: “ Increased student engagement “ Looking up words on a Website, which students prefer to a dictionary “ Students enjoy creating music and art projects together “ Shy students benefit more from using iPads “ Increased critical thinking skills A survey of 5,204 parent responses showed that the biggest concern is the $125 fee for each student in the program. Administrators are seeking ways to reduce financial responsibilities.

Thieme: Trumpet, livestock rate

You don’t have to look hard to recognize a born leader in Hamilton Southeastern High School senior Paul Thieme. His EDUCATION voice possesses the articulate confidence of someone who is mature beyond his years and comfortable in the spotlight.

Thieme was selected to be one of the 87 members of the band that performed at the National Future Farmers of America Convention, held recently in Louisville.

When told he doesn’t sound like an 18-year-old, he laughed, saying, “I often get told I have a radio voice.�

Thieme is committed to the FFA and its mission. He is currently the Indiana FFA Band President and an FFA Executive Committee member. “My passion for FFA was sparked by the realization that the agricultural community is faced with some very challenging tasks between now and 2050, which include feeding an ever-expanding world population.�

Participating in the FFA convention required a lot of preparation. Selected from hundreds of student auditioners, Thieme practiced his trumpet an average of eight hours per day prior to his performances. He’s no stranger to that kind of discipline.

During the two weeks he attends marching band camp each summer, he practices about 12 hours each day. The long practice hours for the conven-

tion were a necessary challenge because of the Kentucky Exposition Center’s size. “You have to fill the room with your sound. It requires a lot of breath support and control in your armature.�

Thieme hopes to major in agricultural engineering at Purdue University this fall. He comes by that vocation naturally, as his father, Ron, is an agricultural engineer who recently re-started the family farm. Thieme speaks with affection for his father, who not only runs the farm but is also the chief information officer of Community Health Network.

Paul says of his dad, “You wouldn’t expect [an executive] to have chickens and cows at the same time. I often compare him to Mr. Douglas in Green Acres.�

How does Paul plan to use his leadership skills? “I figure that I can make a difference by applying myself and bringing out the talent in others through FFA.�

Mother of two children treated at St.Vincent Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital organizes annual 5k Family Fun Run

By Nancy Edwards “ ]P]Rh/RdaaT]cX]UXbWTab R^\ A mother’s strong and giving spirit has led her to raise thousands of dollars to benefit St.Vincent Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, the same institution that has treatCOVER STORY ed her two daughters throughout their lives.

Courtney Cooley, 26, is organizing the third-annual 5k Family Fun Run to benefit the hospital.

Courtney’s eldest daughter, Ellie, 4, had a condition called Vesicoureteral Reflex, the backward flow of urine from the bladder into the kidneys. When Ellie became lethargic, dehydrated and suffered from severe fevers, her parents, Courtney and her husband, John, 26, took her to the hospital. The doctors decided against risky surgery for such a young patient and were able to choose the least-invasive method possible with medicine to treat Ellie, who has no symptoms today.

Lilly, 3, suffers from severe asthma and respiratory syncytial virus, an infection of the lungs and breathing passages. She can’t go outside to play any longer than 20 minutes at a time, and a cold can keep her bedridden for weeks. Lilly has had to see a specialist at the hospital as early as 4 a.m., and the doctors encourage them to come in immediately when a problem arises. “They’re always there,� Courtney said of the physicians treating Lilly. “It’s nice to have those doctors - they are the best support system. I couldn’t ask for any better. I feel lucky.�

Wishing to express as much gratitude to the doctors as possible, Courtney created a 5k Family Fun Run, an annual race that gives 100 percent of its proceeds to the hospital. “She presented the idea to the family and we all jumped on board,� said Tracey Smith, 51, Courtney’s mother. “She went out and found a venue, sponsors, donors and volunteers. “It’s not just a 5k race, though,� Tracey said. “It is a big family event with games, music, mascots, food, raffles and a free kids’ race where all the children receive medals and more.�

In 2012, the first 5k run raised $2,400 for the hospital. In April, the race produced $6,100. The next race will be held April 12 at Butler University and will include a balloon artist, a stroller-friendly

course and additional games. There also will be two signed Peyton Manning photos as raffle prizes.

Courtney’s siblings have all volunteered to help with the run each year. Brittany, 25, designs T-shirts and logos; J.D., 23, directs volunteers and is a course director and Jesse, 17, is in charge of

the games for kids. “It’s a really neat experience for them to be working closely together,� Tracey said. “It’s a project close to their hearts - even though everyone is busy, they make time for this.�

Jesse also helps with another fundraiser for the hospital that Courtney created called Wear Lids for Kids. The event is held at various schools in Hamilton County. Kids are allowed to wear their favorite hat for a day for only $1. The last event raised $405.

Lilly and Allie have their own favorite special event with their mom: Trick or Treat for Kids off Their Feet. Courtney started this for kids staying at the hospital who can’t get out for trick-or-treating. Courtney hand-delivers bags to her entire neighborhood along with a letter explaining the cause. She then collects the candy donations and delivers them to the children at the hospital along with her daughters. This spirit that Lilly and Ellie have, according to Molly Giles, former annual giving coordinator for the St. Vincent Foundation, is impressive. “They’re adorable,� Giles said. “I think they will grow up to do amazing things. They’re very brave. They have in depth stories from being patients in the hospital. They care about each other always. To be that young and well-mannered and caring is impressive.�

The eagerness to help doesn’t fall far from the tree, according to Scott Fihma, a race sponsor and family friend who coached Courtney in track at Clay Middle School in Carmel. “Nobody asked (Courtney) to put on the race,� he said. “She just did it out of the kindness of her heart. It’s something she wanted to do and that’s just awesome. Not many people would do something like that without being asked.�

Bailout of GM proves disaster

Last week, the U.S. Treasury Dept. sold the remainder of its more than 31 million shares in the company. Originally, it had 500 million back in 2010. Net-net: Taxpayer loss on what once was called Government Motors is a stunning $10.5 billion. The UAW thanks you. But really, in the face of the rising national debt, it seems like a simple rounding error, although we would disagree with that. Treasury says it recouped $39 billion from selling its GM stake, but it had put $49.5 billion of taxpayer money directly into the GM bailout. Honestly, did you really believe the balance would be $0 at any time in the wake of this “relief initiative?� Let’s see: We have or have had this effort, Cash for Clunkers, ObamaCare and other “inventions� too numerous to print in this limited space. But remember, we were promised change, and the administration certainly has delivered on that assurance. “ “ “ Since the first of 2011, when we launched Current in Fishers, the town has grown in number of total households in ZIP codes 46037 and 46038 from 27,923 to 29,235. Through the looking glass Commentary by Terry Anker Since its beginning in September 1905, The Indiana Society of Chicago has hosted an annual dinner bringing together Hoosiers and Indiana expatriates who reside in the Second City. The venerable institution lauds the values of education, commerce, philanthropy and fellowship.

Moreover, it is a great time to get together with friends from across our own state and cousins now, in some case long, domiciled in the Windy City, for a good meal, quality entertainment (this year’s speakers included former Indiana University basketball coach, Bobby Knight, fittingly introduced by longtime rival and former Purdue University basketball coach, Gene Keady), and general good humor (Knight spoke of Keady’s notorious comb-over while Keady couldn’t pass recounting stories of Knight’s legendary temper).

Chicago is, as the song recounts, “my kind of town - Chicago is.� My bride and I exchange the cool winter days of Central Indiana for the frigid winter days up north. We celebrate the weekend

by renting a room in some downtown hotel, shopping a little, seeing friends and visiting with family.

With each trip I am reminded how much of a small town boy I can be and what a cultural exchange can come from a 175-mile trip. This time, our room was positioned on a high floor in a tall building directly across the street from an equally lofty residential building. The smooth glass front of the edifice looked like a Rubik’s Cube of humanity. Each window displayed a life; the residents seemed unaffected by their role in these dioramas. One was a family home. One appeared to be a storage unit. Another was a bachelor pad.

One woman found Sunday morning at 11 a.m. the ideal time to clean her apartment while nude.

Thanks to Indiana Society for its service to Hoosiers in Chicago. It is always memorable.

Despite stress during the holidays, or other times of the year for that matter, I’ve noticed that I tend to minimize or forget about problems while volunteering.

Getting up early on a Sunday morning is not exactly a fun thing to do for someone who’s a night owl, yet when I arrive at Petsmart, shuffle to the cat section and see the beautiful felines staring back at me through windows, I can’t help but smile. “Hey, kitties!� I greet them, and they perk up and stretch in return, anxious for an hour to play outside their cages while I feed them and clean their temporary homes.

There are many phenomenal volunteers in our community. While attending the Water Is Life Charity Ball recently, there were at least 150 individuals present who were more than happy to support the efforts of the Fishers Rotary Club’s annual event to raise money for people living in Sierra Leone, Africa, who need access to clean water. So far, the Rotary Club has raised money for 88 wells, which has saved about 87,500 lives!

The Rotary Club is rapidly approaching its goal of providing 100 wells to residents, thanks to the many selfless individuals giving their time and money for a lifesaving cause.

Another Fishers resident deserving exceptional credit is Courtney Cooley, a very grateful and hardworking mother to two beautiful little girls, Allie and Lilly, who have both been treated at St.Vincent Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. Cooley gives back to the hospital by organizing an annual fundraiser called 5k Family Fun Run, a race approaching its third year in April 2014. Her girls have inherited their mom’s generous spirit as well; they look forward to providing a fun Halloween for kids while they stay at the hospital. Allie and Lilly love to pick out toys and cupcakes for their new friends each year.

The big day approacheth, people, and honestly, all I want is a new front door. Our current one, if not dead-bolted, allows streams of HUMOR cold air into the house, occasionally producing a slight whistle.

This isn’t that big of a deal except that it now requires between seven and 51 attempts to unlock. But hey, nothing says “Merry Christmas� like home improvement. Am I right? Of course, this may just be me, so I’ve listed a few suggestions for the more normal lady in your life.

If she has young children, go with a serenity theme. Think massages, babysitters, perhaps a date night. Forget clothes or jewelry. Assuming you correctly guessed her size and accessory preferences (and let’s face it, that would be a Christmas miracle), they’d only be ruined by spit up or thrown down a vent. And definitely no cooking or cleaning appliances. She is sacrificing her happiness for those soul-sucking cuties, and she does not need to spend her precious free time vacuuming or sautÊing. If you can somehow manage to send her away for a long weekend to Sedona, Ariz., it will be a very happy New Year, indeed.

What of the gal with ’tweens and teenagers?

Three words: Noise. Canceling. Headphones.

These puppies will drown out not only the hysterical screams of sisters fighting over the flat iron but also the incessant rat-tat-tat of Xbox

Battlefield, volume cranked to high heaven. Pair them with a case of Chardonnay and another of Febreeze, and you’ll brighten her usually foggy days more efficiently than Rudolph.

Newly married with no kids? The wintery sky’s the limit, my man. Just about anything you buy should go over well so long as it doesn’t reflect an ulterior motive on your part. For example, when she unwraps that 50-inch flat screen and you say it’s for watching Downton Abby, she’s going to see right through your man-cave dream of hosting the boys for Monday Night Football.

I’m not saying you can’t go for it, but trust me, if the ruse fails, the Grinch won’t have anything on your lovely bride. Better to go with a framed photo from your honeymoon.

It looked like a car battery charger to me, which seemed like an odd thing for my dental hygienist to be toting around the HUMOR office. She told me it was the newest thing in dentistry, which is code for: Here’s another high-tech addition to our office, but now we desperately need to find a way to pay for it.

When it comes to dentistry, I’m very old school. I look back fondly on the giant needle they once used to inject the Novocaine.

So what was this monstrosity the hygienist was carrying? “It’s called DIAGNOdent,� Dr. Jones said. “this machine was developed because cavities have found new hiding places.�

I thought I addressed that problem when I began diligently flossing several years ago, but my plaque just up and headed for my arteries.

When I started taking Lipitor, my cholesterol went down, so now I have no idea where all that build-up went, although I do have trouble hearing lately.

According to Dr. Jones, the traditional way of poking teeth with a dental probe to look for tiny holes actually caused cavities. And x-rays have never been very effective, he told me, especially for detecting some cavities that are protected by the enamel veneer, which is even stronger

nowadays due to fluoridated water. Dr. Jones explained that with a laser light beam, DIAGNOdent locates cavities before they grow. Then some of these little guys will be subjected to minimally invasive preventive therapy.

Dr. Jones took the laser probe and started scanning my mouth. I heard him say four, then seven, then 10. When he got to 14 he stopped.

That frightened me because I have a general sense of how many pearly whites I have and this number seemed a bit low, even for a man my age. I heard a lot of beeping during the process, but finally Dr. Jones informed me that “there is no evidence of decay in your pits or grooves.�

Good news for me but it would have been even better news if I were an English muffin.

Before I left, Dr. Jones educated me about another new procedure he offers (this one for his dental-phobic patients) called NuCalm. You chew a few herbal pills, put a patch behind your ears, slap on some ear phones, and before you know it, you are tension-free. I told him I didn’t feel anxiety in his office, but he said, “The stress is always there; it’s hiding.�

Yeah, possibly in those little holes in my teeth.

Conductor brings Handel’s ‘Messiah’ to Clowes Hall

The conductor of one of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s recurring special events is certain he knows what SYMPHONY makes Handel’s “Messiah� so special to so many people. “There are very few pieces in music that have enjoyed such longevity, such fame, such renown,� James Feddeck said recently in a phone interview from New York. “It was written and conceived for the English-speaking world, and that’s something to celebrate.�

Many masterworks with seasonal associations came from the European continent, with texts in French, German and Italian. The Germanborn Handel achieved his greatest fame in England, and invented the English sacred oratorio, a form that followed his eventually dwindling success as a composer of Italian operas and, with “Messiah� in particular, gave him permanent esteem in the United Kingdom.

In its annual joining of forces with the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir to present “Messiah,� the ISO has engaged Feddeck, who recently completed four seasons as assistant conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra. Though the 1742 work is known mainly for its choruses (“Hallelujah� especially), solos that generally require professional singers carry much of the work’s message, conveyed in selections from the Old and New Testaments made for the composer by Charles Jennens. Feddeck had had several phone conversations with Symphonic Choir director Eric Stark before the interview, and will meet with the soloists and choir once he arrives Dec. 18. “Working with such accomplished musicians, everybody shares the enthusiasm together, and the process is very uplifting,� said Feddeck, 30.

He is a graduate of Ohio’s Oberlin Conservatory, which awarded him its first Outstanding Young Alumni Award in 2010.

As popular as “Messiah� is, Feddeck is aware that it’s a challenge for contemporary attention spans.

“I keep the entire Christmas portion intact, but I do make significant cuts in the second and third parts,� he said, while trying to ensure that “the work still maintains the concept and the architecture of the story and the drama.�

Traditionally performed at Christmas time in the U.S., most of the work is in fact centered on the biblical account of Christ’s Passion and Resurrection, with the Old Testament excerpts intended to show the traditional Christian interpretation of scripture as pointing toward the crucial events of Jesus’ life. “It can have both musical and sacred meanings,� Feddeck said, “depending on the listener.

It’s a masterfully constructed musical composition. Whenever we are offered music with text, it can be both an advantage and a disadvantage.

The text, while it helps us understand the piece, shouldn’t stop that process of what we would normally do when performing or listening: ‘What does this mean to me?’�

His personal view? “What I want to convey with the work is that it’s a work of hope and of glory and of peace. They are all things that we need in our age. In terms of its message of peace, it is a work for our time, and offers something to everyone.�

One-hour production on stage at Beef & Boards

By Patricia Rettig Â&#x201C; TSXc^aXP[/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ In time for the holidays and on select dates only, Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre presents its special one-hour production of THEATRE the classic Charles Dickens tale, â&#x20AC;&#x153;A Christmas Carol.â&#x20AC;? This timeless story is enhanced with music and live on stage through Dec. 20.

The play centers on Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly businessman whose bitterness has increased with age. He cares little for the needs of his fellow man, preferring to keep money in his pocket rather than coal on the fire. His employee, Bob Cratchit, faithfully endures the ongoing chill from both his workplace and his boss.

He keeps Scrooge in his prayers even though his own family is struggling to survive on the meager salary he earns. The health of Cratchitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s young son, Tiny Tim, is as poor as the family is financially, but Scroogeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heart is unmoved and his coffers remain unopened.

Scroogeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inhumanity becomes so intense that it stirs the spirit of his late business partner, Jacob Marley, who appears to him on Christmas Eve. Marley tells Scrooge he will be visited by three more spirits, and advises him to heed the messages they bring. The ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come then appear to Scrooge in succession â&#x20AC;&#x201C; reminding him of what was, showing what is, and warning him what will be should he continue on his present path. “Working out helps to relieve stress”

With the recent cold snap following another cold spell, it’s probably time to pack up for the season. After all, the high schools finished their football games weeks ago, and except for bowl games, the colleges have too. When packing up for the year a tailgater needs to consider several things. They first have to clean all their equipment. Then they have to solve the puzzle of where to store the stuff.

Wouldn’t it make sense to make some notes as you pack up the tailgating gear? Here are some helpful thoughts: Make a map of where everything is stored.

Evaluate every piece of gear to determine if it will last another season or it needs to be replaced. Make a list of gear you needed, but didn’t have this season.

Take this list with you as sales appear during the off-season. Buy your equipment before the spring line comes out with its higher pricing.

Most tailgaters watch football on TV this time of year, and they need a great snack for the game and the food commercials. This is our world famous Chili Con Queso: Ingredients: 2 pound box of Velveeta, 1

can diced tomatoes, 1 small can green chilies, chopped, 1 pound package hot Italian sausage Preparation: Cut the skin (casing) off of the sausage and brown it well in a frying pan. Chop it to little bits with a spatula. When it’s finished cooking, drain it onto paper towels and set it aside.

Cube the Velveeta and place it in a large microwave-safe bowl. Cook it slowly in the microwave, one minute at a time, until it is just melted into a very thick liquid. Add in all the other ingredients and stir. Reheat and enjoy on corn chips or even buns.

Carmel theatre-goers will be in for a treat when Actorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Theatre of Indiana presents an exclusive engagement of â&#x20AC;&#x153;The THEATRE Circus in Winter.â&#x20AC;? The musical is based on a novel by Indiana novelist Cathy Day and details the history of a traveling circus that wintered in Peru, Ind. The script was crafted by 14 students in theatre and dance professor Beth Turcotteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s immersive learning class at Ball State University.

Based in the fictional 1930s town of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Limaâ&#x20AC;? in the production, the story tells the tale of a community that came together to build the circus, the man who later purchases it and the tragedy he must overcome along the way, Turcotte said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The music is the highlight of the experience,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Set to original music and lyrics written by Indiana-native Ben Clark, fans of bluegrass, country and rock music are sure to come away impressed. But perhaps the most intriguing part of the Carmel performance will be the chance for the audience to give feedback to the actors, writers and producers following the show. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to be an exciting opportunity for people to possibly affect a show that could end up on Broadway,â&#x20AC;? said Actors Theater Artistic Director Don Farrell.

Covering children after college Commentary by Jamie Ianigro

Question from Rick G. from Carmel: My daughter is graduating this weekend and moving back home until she finds a INSURANCE job. What kind of insurance concerns should I have with this situation? Are you hiring?

Response from Jamie Ianigro: The down economy has hit everyone, but it’s really punished the folks graduating from college in the past couple of years.

You do trigger some insurance issues anytime someone moves into your home. You could also be heading towards some health insurance issues depending on the age of your daughter.

Let’s start with the property and liability issues though.

Personal liability is the big issue that arises with grown kids. Everyone has a legal responsibility to handle the damage they cause to other people and their property. It can be anything from injuring someone accidently in a recreational sport to misjudging the wind and falling a tree into a neighbor’s house. The liability falls right back on your homeowners policy if you or your child does something like that. The problem that can arise is where your grown kid actually lives.

Maybe all of their stuff is under your roof, but are they sleeping there every night?

You might consider getting a renter’s policy in her name. It has the benefit of property coverage, but the main benefit is that there will be no fight over liability coverage if a conflict arises.

This is an important issue and verifying with your independent agent that you and your grown kids are protected is a quick and easy thing to do.

Health insurance is the other major issue that affects grown children that not eligible for their own coverage. The Affordable Care Act extended the age limit that children can stay on a parent’s health plan to age 26.

Many options at many price points are still available once someone passes the age restriction. Independent Insurance Agents are usually able to help you secure an individual health policy and help weigh your options. Going without coverage is an absolute last resort option. It is extremely risky and will make it very difficult to get quality coverage in the future.

Varicose veins and pregnancy

Along with the joys of pregnancy can come not so joyful varicose veins. There are several causes of varicose veins AESTHETICS during pregnancy. Heredity is a major contributing factor. Hormone levels rise during pregnancy causing the walls of the veins to relax and result in increased risk. During pregnancy, the blood volume doubles to supply both the mother and her fetus. This increased volume can make the veins bulge. As the uterus grows, it puts pressure on a large vein (inferior vena cava) on the right side of the body, which increases pressure in the leg veins. Being overweight, carrying multiples and standing for long periods of time make it more likely to develop varicose veins.

Unfortunately, varicose veins tend to get worse with each successive pregnancy and age.

As a reminder, varicose veins develop when the valves that keep blood flowing out of the legs and back to the heart become damaged.

This can cause blood to pool in your legs, with bulging veins and pain. Associated symptoms include leg aching, swelling, itching, heaviness, restlessness and fatigue.

Here are some things you can do to improve your leg health while pregnant: Â&#x201C; Keep your weight within the recommended range for your stage of pregnancy. Â&#x201C; Exercise daily, including walking.

Six lies in relationships

Commentary by Mike Colaw

This holiday season as you are surrounded by friends and family let me offer six relational lies that must be confronted.

The Lie: People in SPIRITUALITY great relationships always get along.

The Truth: Conflict is required for intimacy. If you are constantly running from conflict, my guess is you don’t have deep friendships. Learning to speak truth in love will create an environment of transparency that satisfies deeply. It only comes through healthy conflict and transparency. Don’t be fake.

The Lie: A healthy relationship will eventually be free of conflict.

The Truth: We are all flawed. There is a term in the Bible called forbearance, which in context often means the refraining of enforcement. This means there will be times where you are absolutely right about something and the other person is absolutely wrong. However, you choose to forgive (not necessarily ignore) for the sake of the relationship. Sometimes the relationship is more important than the issue. Hear me clearly; all of us have issues. Healthy relationships know, recognize and reflect healthy forbearance.

The Lie: People fall in love.

The Truth: People fall in lust. True love is work, a journey of focused commitment. History teaches us instant-conflict-free relationships are most likely to be found in fairytales.

The Lie: Lucky people experience great friendships.

The Truth: Loving, sacrificially committed people experience great friendships. It’s like a group of friends embarking on a long ocean voyage. The friends in this ship live it up together when it’s calm and steady each other when the storm rages.

The Lie: I don’t need people.

The Truth: There is nothing more powerful and satisfying than to be deeply known and loved. Known, meaning you are relationally close and familiar with that which makes another unique, the good and the bad. Loved, meaning someone affectionately chooses you, no matter what. Nothing satisfies more than to be chosen and loved, in spite of our flaws.

The Lie: Marriage is old-fashioned and divorce is no big deal.

The Truth: It’s often harder for people to get over a divorce than it is to recover from the death of a loved one. Marriage is intended to be a covenant, with boundaries protecting a developing relationship.

The Biblical view of marriage isn’t a list of rules holding you back. It is a treasure map showing the route to a deeply satisfying relationship. If you don’t follow the map, don’t expect to find the treasure.

Cleaning the kitchen pantry is a great winter project, especially around the holidays. When you are preparing to cook big meals, INDOORS a well-stocked and organized pantry can make cooking and entertaining much easier. Let’s take a look at a few ways you can create the perfect pantry that will fit your family’s needs.

There are many items available on the market that will help you make the most of every square inch of pantry space. Try installing carousels, pullout shelves, or corner hangings to maximize the space. Or take advantage of cabinetry pieces to increase storage capacity. There are also ways to incorporate pieces like roll-out drawers, lazy-susans and other built-in organizational tools (like spice racks) that can help you organize and keep cooking supplies within easy reach.

Lighting inside the pantry is hugely important.

If you can’t see inside the pantry, how will you be able to find anything inside? Forms of natural light are preferable, but generally artificial light is the only option for pantry. Create a lighting design that won’t cast many shadows. LED or fluorescent lighting may be preferable because these forms won’t emit heat like incandescent lights do. You could even choose to backlight the shelving or use small touch lights inside the pantry. These targeted sources of light will result in brighter, more direct lighting than an overhead fixture alone. The extra lighting will also make it easier to read labels or locate specific items.

Consider installing a motion-sensor lighting system inside the pantry to make things a bit more convenient when you are searching through the shelves.

After you’ve got the proper organization and lighting systems in place, it’s time to reorganize the items inside the pantry. The best way to organize a pantry is systematically. Throw away any expired products and donate any foods you no longer want. Next, group items together by function so you can find them with ease. Put all spices in one place; all marinades and sauces in one place; and all perishable items like potatoes or onions in one place. You get the idea. Arrange the foods with the labels facing toward the front,

that way you can spot expired items and throw them away before they sit in the pantry for another month. Invest in a stepladder so you can make use of top shelf space, and place rarely used items, such as special kitchen appliances or infrequently used pots, on the top shelves.

Moving items from a pantry to a cabinet could be a great idea, and you can organize it in many different ways depending on the space you have available. You could keep all of your spices, or all of your cooking oils and baking ingredients, in a separate cabinet. My advice would be to continue organizing by function so that your grouped items don’t get split up between the closet and pantry. Thanks to a well-organized pantry, you create delicious holiday meals with a bit more ease. Spend less time rummaging through the pantry and more time with family and friends.
