Turnout up, but not by much

voter turnout in May, again posted the best percentage of voters with 61.2 percent. Delaware 2 precinct had the lowest turnout with 12.9 percent.

“People who are going to vote voted,” said Eugene Hunton, Democrat judge. “If we had nicer weather it might have brought out a few more voters. The problem is too many people think it doesn’t matter.”

Despite the turnout, Nov. 4’s election had a different feel than May’s primary.

“Honestly, there hasn’t been as many older people,” said Kristie Kilfoil, inspector at Noblesville 27 precinct. “It’s been younger people to 40s – people who have kids in school. We usually have quite a few older voters in their 70s.”

Randy Reitzer, inspector of South Westfield 1 and 2 and Westfield 24 precincts, said his three precincts had a steady stream of voters all day.

“It’s been considerably better turnout (than the primary). People have been getting in and out real quick,” he said, adding an off-year general election is typically 21 to 22 percent turnout. “It’s much more exciting than what the primary was.”

Steady was a common phrase by poll workers on Nov. 4.

“There have been a few dry spells but I’m surprised,” said Michelle Waitt, an inspector who has been working the polls for 28 years. “I expected to be here most of the day doing nothing.”

The general election of a non-presidential year is never the biggest draw to the polls. This year contained several contested state election races, but only one county contest and most local races focused on school boards with the exception of a few historic races in Fishers.

Hamilton County Election Administrator Kathy Richardson said Hamilton County has 209,088 registered voters and 57,455 ballots were cast in the general election – a voter turnout of 27.48 percent, an increase from May’s dismal primary election with 12.1 percent. Four years ago, the county had 81,796 of its 182,345 registered voters cast ballots for a general election turnout of 45 percent.

“Am I happy with 27 percent? No, but it’s better than 12 percent,” said Richardson. “People were thinking we wouldn’t get over 20 percent.”

Richardson said the closest race to compare this year to is the general election of 2002, when secretary of state was at the top of the ticket. Twelve years ago, the county only had 130,652 voters but had a turnout of 35 percent.

“There were very few TV ads to make people think about the election cycle (this year),” Richardson said.

Murder hits close to home

There’s a sigh of relief in Fishers and, more specifically, in the Windermere neighborhood, after police made an arrest in the crime murder of 73-year-old Henry Kim. At the same time, there is sadness as the suspect is a 17-year-old youth. Two families are damaged and forever changed because of this senseless act of violence.

I live in Windermere, and it’s more than a little unsettling to see crime scene tape in your own neighborhood, especially when that crime is murder. A lovely park with a pond in the Windermere neighborhood around 96th Street and Mollenkopf Road became a crime scene on the evening of Nov. 1 when Kim, a Windermere resident, was shot and killed while apparently out for his normal evening walk. His body was discovered by another resident walking his dog in the area of Windermere Boulevard and Parkway Drive.

Within the span of less than three days, Fishers police had a suspect in custody, 17-year-old Maxwell Winkler, who also lives in the Windermere subdivision. Police should be commended for not only the quick work that led to an arrest, but also for their professional handling of the situation. They were a constant presence in the neighborhood following the murder, which helped calm nerves, and they kept the public informed and advised throughout the investigation. There is something about the Fishers Police Dept. that instills confidence and competence.

At this writing, it is still unclear what the motive for the murder was or why a 17-year-old was allegedly carrying a gun. But we see this sort of thing happening all over the nation. It just

doesn’t hit home until it happens to a neighbor on a street where you walk or drive every single day in a neighborhood that you thought was safe and immune to such things.

This is the second homicide this year in Fishers after a 20-year run of none at all. The thing that both have in common is that they involved teenagers who are now charged with murder.

Interestingly, when I recently sat down with Mayor-elect Scott Fadness and asked him to name his top three initiatives when he takes office, the third thing he listed took me by surprise.

He mentioned the mental health of the residents of Fishers as a top priority. He was not ready to go into detail but indicated that he was working with police, fire and hospital personnel to develop a plan to care for and treat those who exhibit mental health issues in our community. Those are often the people who commit violent acts whether against someone else or themselves.

It struck me as an unusual agenda item for a mayor and I found it very proactive. Look for initiatives on that front to be announced in the coming months.

Fishers is still an extremely safe place to live.

Two murders in 20 years is an incredible record.

We should be proud of our public servants, both police and fire, and we should all stay alert and look out for each other.

In the meantime, my sympathies to the Kim family.

Fishers prepares for snow

By Holly Demaree • news@currentinfishers.com No one wants to think about plowing the streets for snow, but the Fishers Dept. of Public Works is already preparpublic safety ing for it. Forty to 75 seasonal snow plow drivers and five to 10 heavy equipment operators are used every year to help with the snow removal effort.

When the actual snow falls, DPW begins work on what has been decided are main thoroughfares, followed by secondary roads and then subdivisions.

“The main thoroughfares that we will typically hit first are connected to a main artery road: 116th Street, 126th, Hoosier Road and Cumberland Road,” said Sean O’Grady, assistant director of Public Works. “We will try and connect all those major intersections or entry and exit points and then work our way deeper into the subdivisions. So, mainly the school bus routes, the entryways to the neighborhoods and the connector roads.”

and it often causes problems on both sides of the snow removal workforce.

“We would like to know which housing associations do have contracts with private contractors, so we do not have to duplicate efforts,” said O’Grady. “If they were to have a contract, we ask them to work opposite of us. Work in the cul-desac and work their way to the main thoroughfares. The duplication of efforts of them salting and then us plowing that off and then us salting and then them plowing it off. There are a lot of different factors going into it and we don’t want to overlap and waste resources.”

Fishers has 4,300 tons of salt and 5,000 gallons of calcium to begin the season and is in the process of building a brine (liquid deicing) machine. DPW has a backup plan if salt becomes scarce, as it did last winter.

“If we do get into a situation where salt is a hot commodity and hard to get, we will start mixing the calcium a little bit more,” said O’Grady.

“We can use the brine and start sanding some areas by mixing salt and sand. There are a bunch of different processes we can go through to make sure the roads are safer to travel.”

“Heaven is for Real,” I read that in just a couple of hours. I had to see the movie when it came out.

I don’t like scary movies.

I used to when I was younger but now I steer clear of scary movies.

Katie, she’s a little Shih Tzu. She runs the family, she’s the boss.

What do you like most about your community?

I like the small-town feel even though we are one of the fastest growing in the nation, I’ve heard. We’re very loyal and homey. … I don’t see myself leaving the community. I’m a homebody and I love our people.

Historic Eller House thrives

By Beth Clark • news@currentinfishers.com The Eller House at 7050 E. 116th Street in Fishers is one of only a few historic structures in the area. Once a grand family preservation farmhouse on a 100-acre homestead, the house has survived a number of owners, periods of abandonment and neglect, and the development of all of its surrounding acreage to stand today as an example of an old building repurposed for successful commercial use.

Construction of the two-story brick house began in 1877 and took two years to complete.

The brick walls, 12 inches thick, were made from the clay formed and fired on the building site.

The house was built for Fernando Eller on land that had been given to him seven years earlier by his father upon the occasion of Fernando’s wedding. The Eller descendants arrived in Hamilton County in the 1820s and Fernando, who was born in the vicinity, rose to prominence as a successful farmer. He was also a Union soldier in the Civil War and an accomplished musician.

The current owner and principal business tenant of the Eller House, Rory Underwood, president of commercial real estate firm Revel & Underwood, recently hosted an open house at the property.

“I’ve had a number of clients interested in learning more about the history of our office space, so I thought this open house would be a great way to give them and anyone interested a chance to tour and learn about the Eller House and to visit the other businesses here,” Underwood said. He plans to host another open house

Revel & Underwood purchased the house in 1999 after the restaurant that occupied the building closed. Underwood’s team carefully remodeled the restaurant into office space, working to maintain vestiges of the character and integrity of the original building.

“Although the building is not listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is still a meaningful structure to the community of Fishers and a part of the town’s history,” Underwood stated. “It has been important to me to keep the character and charm of the place intact.”

Underwood is committed to continuing preservation work on the building that was first initiated by the previous owner, Joe Mattingly. Much of the floor plan of the original 2,600-square-foot house is unaltered. Victorian design elements such as transom windows, carved oak fireplace mantels and 10-foot ceilings have been preserved.

School of Rock Carmel has done it again. Its house band, consisting of student musicians from the Indianapolis area including music two from Fishers, will perform Nov. 14-16 at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland.

School of Rock Carmel, which helps aspiring young musicians of all levels better their craft, opened in March 2012. The School of Rock franchise, from which the Jack Black movie of the same name is based, began in Philadelphia in 1998.

“Students usually come in to School of Rock Carmel wanting to learn an instrument for the first time, to grow as a musician on the instrument they’re already learning or to get a chance to work with other musicians and to perform,” said Elyse Causey general manager for School of Rock Carmel. “But a lot of times what they end up learning has more to do with life lessons than just music.”

School of Rock Carmel is not just about the music; it also teaches students confidence, teamwork, responsibility and punctuality, in a fun way. Not all of the students attend the same school and find a sense of community when playing or practicing with others at School of Rock Carmel.

Two members of the house band are Fishers residents: Brittny Kasprzyk is a vocalist and Justin Blanner is a guitarist. The student musicians in the house band are part of the intermediate or advanced group and are allowed to audition to join the house band. The house band is made up of eight musicians and performs locally and regionally, including the Milwaukee Summerfest, a popular summer festival in Wisconsin.

Causey believes the upcoming Cleveland performance will help the students grow as musicians by watching and performing with students from School of Rock locations in Cleveland and Cincinnati.

Fishers is a good place to live Commentary by Larry Lannan

My wife Jane and I have called Fishers home since 1991. My twin daughters were born and raised here. They were eduplain talk cated by the Hamilton Southeastern schools, kindergarten through 12th grade. I am often asked by friends and relatives that don’t live here, what is it like living in Fishers?

To give them an honest answer, it wasn’t fun commuting from my job in downtown Indianapolis. Indiana Department of Transportation officials have been constructing upgrades for years on Interstate 69, but the traffic load continues to overwhelm during rush hours. There are plans on the drawing board to fix this, but it will take years to get that done.

Aside from traffic, living in Fishers has been a wonderful experience for my family. We have made many friends here.

We have a public safety staff in Fishers that is second to none. Our local police and fire departments have no shortage of good, qualified applicants anytime there is an opening on their respective staffs. Fire Chief Steve Orusa and Police Chief George Kehl are respected by their own staffs and by public safety professionals throughout the state.

It’s hard to imagine that Kehl has been around Fishers long enough to see it move from

a tiny farm town to the massive suburb we have become. This gives him a rare institutional knowledge of how his department grew from that small town to this soon-to-be city of 80,00085,000 residents.

If bad winter weather descends upon us, you can count on the Fishers snow removal crews to keep the roads open. Every street and road is snow plowed by Fishers for a snowstorm of any size.

The Hamilton Southeastern School Corporation is the crown jewel of Fishers. Even with a state school funding formula that has resulted in less funding per student than many other school systems in the state, HSE schools have managed to continue a high quality of education for their students. You can see that in just about any measure available.

Perhaps the way I talk about Fishers has rubbed off on some of my family members. My sister and her husband recently moved here. I have a nephew and niece who live here with their families. A relative of mine has just been hired as a teacher at HSE schools.

We have our problems. It’s not a perfect place.

But Fishers is a good place to live.

How about ‘snow-or-treat’?

Holy cold, Batman.

There was snow … on Halloween this year.

That fact alone was enough plain talk to scare the pants off of me; except that would have made things worse. This cold spell had me shaking in my boots and thinking about calling it quits for trick-or-treating.

I asked my parenting brain the following question. What kind of parent would go trick-ortreating in this weather? She replied with, “What kind of parent skips out on trick-or-treating?”

Then she mockingly said under her indignant breath, “Chicken.”

I must admit, I wanted to skip going out in the spitting rain and cold, blowing wind. It was frightful outside. Why go out in this weather to venture for some candy? Have I lost my mind?

I quickly realized why I had to go out in this weather. When I looked around me, I saw two pitiful children who had spent the last 30 days building up the excitement of the night. They were ready for a huge haul of Halloween loot.

Think of the sugar rush they would have missed!

We bundled up the whole family in a ridiculous amount of gear. Winter coats, gloves, hats, scarves and boots were strategically placed amid the costumes. They braved the elements and fought the cold, which lasted for exactly five houses. All of this for approximately 10 pieces of candy. Apparently, this is the lesson where we

It’s a little behind schedule but Central Green in downtown Fishers is starting to take shape and according to the direcdowntown tor of community development, Tom Dickey, should be finished by early December.

Central Green is the green space from 116th Street. to Fishers Town Hall that includes the Liberty Plaza monument that was built a few years ago in honor of veterans and others who are involved in public service such as police and fire.

The Liberty Plaza Task Force was formed by the Fishers Chamber of Commerce and a group of interested citizens that raised half the money necessary to build the monument with the Town of Fishers kicking in the other half. The original plan included a fountain and some other elements that were never completed.

Dickey says he recently met with members of the task force to update them on the town’s new plan for the monument and surrounding area. “I was anxious to get their feedback because we really felt like we wanted the Central Green to respond to and be respectful of the monument that was there. It was kind of an anxious meeting for me and when I finished describing the plan to them, they were just really positive and said that it was a lot like the plan they had developed,” said Dickey.

Task force member Pete Pippen said the town’s involvement in the project was important to its success. “We couldn’t have done it other-

wise. It wouldn’t have ended up as nice ultimately without their help. We’re more than happy with the way they participated and came across with funds to help us complete it,” he said and added, “our main focus was the monument itself.

The monument and the brick pavers and the flags was our design. The balance around it was always up to the town”.

Dickey said that Central Green is a multi-use area that will provide space in which to enjoy Liberty Plaza. “The plaza opens it all up with crosswalks to get over there, new planting areas around the monument and new limestone benches going in near the monument. So I think that’s the first thing it does. It makes it a living, breathing feature of the community that you can actually get up to and stand next to and touch it,” said Dickey.

He said there will also be a fountain as part of the monument and charging stations on some of the benches. “One of the things that we look to do in making a decision in Fishers, whether it’s a building decision or design decision on a project, we look at it through the lens of what our strategy is with respect to economic development,” Dickey said. “So as we thought about that park, we thought about creating a space where people want to work and where employers want to move their businesses to and so we thought then that the park ought to be conducive to people hanging out there and working.”

Dickey said the cost of the monument upgrade will be $75,000-$100,000 with a total price tag of close to $1 million for the entire Central Green project including new parking.

Legion post continues to grow

By Beth Taylor • news@currentinfishers.com As other American Legion posts have experienced a drop in membership, the Lowell Beaver American Legion Post No. 470 veterans in Fishers continues to grow.

The Fishers Legionnaires take pride in their commitment to community service as well as their shared military kinship.

“Anyone driving by can stop in and feel welcome,” said fourth-term Post Commander Chris Jordan. “That’s a common misconception. You don’t have to be a member to come in.”

Jordan served in the Army and joined Post 470 in memory of his father “My father was a member of this post and always enjoyed coming here,” said Jordan. Almost every position is a volunteer position. “You work it just as you would a regular job,” he added.

When Jordan joined Post 470, the atmosphere was not conducive to younger veterans. “There was a gap that we needed to fill. We created a place where younger veterans can go with families, while older veterans can still feel comfortable,” said Jordan. “You won’t get the same feeling in every post as we have here.”

Anyone can come in, but only members or

guests signed in by members can drink alcoholic beverages, except for three community days each month. Veterans of all branches of the military can become members. Family members who have had a father, grandfather or greatgrandfather serve in the military are also eligible for membership.

The full horseshoe-shaped bar was recently updated after a two-year fundraiser. “We’re really proud of our restaurant, too,” said Jordan. “We use local meat from Archer’s here in Fishers.”

Active Post 470 holds bingo, blackjack, live trivia and karaoke events to span generations of patrons. It also hosts fundraisers, such as pancake breakfasts, for area high schools and actively supports other community service projects.

Post 470 serves as a support service for local veterans. “We can help a veteran pay a bill or buy groceries and with greater needs, like being six months behind on a mortgage, we can help them find assistance,” said Jordan.

Fredrick Spaulding is among the first to be inducted into the Indiana Veterans Hall of Fame

By Ann Craig-Cinnamon • ann@youarecurrent.com Fred Spaulding was moving a little slowly after having had surgery just three days earlier. But there is no doubt that it won’t keep the brave and highly decorated veteran cover story and Fishers resident down for long.

During an illustrious military career that spanned 29 years and numerous tours of duty, Spaulding earned so many medals that he doesn’t know himself how many he has. The 74-year-old joked that an old army buddy once put a sign on his army jacket with an arrow that pointed up from his medals that read “continued on back.” Today he displays them all in shadow boxes and it takes two to hold them all.

It all started when, as an 18-year-old, Spaulding decided to enlist in the Marines but was summarily tossed out of the recruiters’ office at the old federal building in downtown Indianapolis. As he was leaving, an Army recruiter down the hall convinced him to step into his office. Spaulding says there was a poster on the wall that jumped out at him.

“There were guys on the ground and some running and they had knives stuck in their boots and very determined looks on their faces and parachutes coming down behind them,” Spaulding recalled. “It said, ‘Airborne and Rangers lead the way’ and I thought, ‘Well, I’ll bet that’s just as good if not better than the Marines.’”

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, which is the second highest honor awarded; a Silver Star, which is the third highest honor; two Distinguished Flying Crosses, which is equal to a Silver Star but for aerial; and three Bronze Stars with V (for Valorous Acts). He has also been recommended for the highest honor of all, the Medal of Honor, but he takes it all in stride.

“You can have all the pretty bright-colored ribbons; that’s good.

But the greatest accolade or award you can ever have is when you’re standing there at one of the reunions and some young guy comes up that you have never seen before in your life,” Spaulding said. “Of course, most of them add 50, 60 pounds now and their hair may be gray, but they’ll come up with their wife and two kids and want to introduce you to their family. And they introduce you as ‘this is Col. Spaulding, this is the guy that got us out.’ Makes you feel 10 feet tall.”

Spaulding lives in the Del Webb neighborhood of Fishers with his wife of 42 years, Mikye, whom he met in Korea.

Army veteran finds best friend through Pets Healing Vets

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Justin Seifried certainly believes in love at first sight. It happened for Seifried and his Dutchess.

Seifried, a U.S. Army Fundraiser veteran who served in Afghanistan, went looking for his lost cat in May at the Humane Society for Hamilton County and the animal lover couldn’t help but take a peek at the dogs.

Dutchess, a mixed breed of collie, corgi and beagle, caught his eye. She was let out to play and snatched Seifried’s heart.

“I felt so bad. I knew I couldn’t go anywhere else without her,” said Seifried, a 24-year-old Fishers resident. “There was no way I could get a different dog because I found my best friend.”

When Seifried asked about adoption procedures, Amanda Ryan, manager of community outreach for Humane Society for Hamilton County, informed him about the Pets Healing Vets program. The program pairs qualifying veterans with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury with shelter animals in need of homes. The program is open to vets throughout the state.

Ryan explained to Seifried how the emotional support animals can be adopted for free and bills would be paid for spay/neuter and vaccines. The humane society also provides training and ongoing behavior counseling if needed.

is,” said Seifried, who later had his lost cat returned to him. “You don’t see many businesses and human societies go all out for veterans like that. It really touched me.”

Seifried, who was driving, suffered a serious concussion when his truck was hit by a 500-pound roadside bomb in Afghanistan.

“It was so big. I just blacked out,” Seifried said.

“My squad leader thought I was dead because I was out cold. Later when I got back, I was told I’d have permanent brain swelling, which means my brain got jarred so bad that it’s constantly bruised. My memory has started to slip a bit. I have some complications in my left eye.

“It made me who I am today. It made me see the little things and appreciate what a soldier goes through over there.”

Seifried had various other injuries and wounds during his tour. A grenade went off near his ear, causing some hearing loss.

“My body definitely took a beat down over there,” Seifried said.

His 101st unit was part of the biggest missions in Afghanistan history called Operation Strong Eagle III in 2011.

“I lost six of my best friends in six hours,” Seifried said. “I wear this bracelet to remind me of them.”

Seifried had enlisted in the Army, 10 days after graduating from Livermore (Iowa) High School in 2009. He took a medical discharge on Sept. 1, 2012. He served one 13-month tour of Afghanistan.

“I was in on at least 150 firefights and highprofile missions and definitely saw my action as a 19-year-old kid,” he said.

Dutchess can sense when Seifried needs support.

“We’ve had our rough times thinking about the memories overseas,” Seifried said. “She knows when I’m upset. She’ll come to me when I’m laying on bed thinking. She’ll lay her head on my chest and get really close to me. An emotional support dog is exactly what she is. She’s loving and caring. She does this thing where you can actually see her smile. When she knows I’m sad,

she’ll smile.”

The two friends rescued each other.

“I like to say she needs me as much as I need her and I need her a lot,” he said.

AlphaGraphics, a Carmel printing business, is a big supporter of the two-year-old Pets Healing Vets program Every day, 22 veterans commit suicide. Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals (1.2 million dogs, 1.4 million cats) are euthanized.

“This is a way to put these two populations together and help both of them,” said Rhonda Kile, who owns the business with her husband Michael.

A Pets Healing Vets fundraising event will be held at AlphaGraphics, 12955 Old Meridian St., Carmel, from 3 to 7 p.m. Nov. 8. The event is also hosted by A Cut Above Catering and Halo Salon.

By Robert Herrington • robert@youarecurrent.com Ron Wilson became involved in local veterans organization when he returned to Noblesville after serving six years in the Navy profile and joined the American Legion in 1971.

“In the past 40 years, all of my old World War II friends are gone,” he said. “It’s hard for me to believe the average age of Korean War veterans is 75 and Vietnam War is 70. Time flies when you are having fun.”

Wilson headed the group that brought the Vietnam War Memorial “Traveling Wall” to Hamilton County in 2004 and 2007.

“When I told the group it would cost $8,000 to bring the wall to Noblesville you could see all the blood drain from their faces. I told them, ‘Hell, that’s only getting 80 businesses to donate $100 a piece.’ We raised $8,000 in seven days,” he said.

Wilson said the group might try to bring the wall back again but fundraising the second time was tougher than in 2004.

“The way the economy was it was hard. Places that donated $100 or more the original time were only giving $25 or $50,” he said. “I’d love to do it again, but a big group of members are no longer with us.”

Wilson also played a critical role in creating two veterans organizations. Wilson and two friends started the Navy Club Ship No. 29, which was founded Nov. 11, 2009.

“It started with coffee on Wednesday nights with two sailors and a Marine,” he said. “Through all of this I’ve been able to help a bunch of different families and veterans throughout the county.”

He and Wayne Long also created the Hamilton County Veterans organization in 2007. The 501c3 nonprofit has several projects it is working on including a van to transport Hamilton County residents to the VA Hospital in Indianapolis.

Wilson said he hopes the program is underway in 2015. The group also is collecting fund to fix a crack in the war memorial at Crownland Cemetery in Noblesville.

“We’ll dismantle what is there and put in a new base. It has a 19-degree lean,” Wilson said.

“We hope to have it fixed by Memorial Day.” Wilson said there is a misconception about veterans groups.

“People think we sit around and talk about war stories. That just isn’t the case,” he said.

“We talk about stuff, but we don’t talk about that stuff. It’s a time to socialize with guys that have been there and done that.

Throughout his years being involved in veterans affairs Wilson said the biggest change is need.

“People either don’t know how to get benefits or where to go. Things are changing constantly with the VA system,” he said. “One hundred and eighty dollars could be the difference between paying for medicine or not.

Veterans Day Ceremonies Carmel – The city will host its “Home of the Brave” themed Veterans Day ceremony at noon Nov. 10 at Tarkington Theater in the Center for the Performing Arts, 3 Center Green.

Participants include Mayor Jim Brainard, The American Legion Department of Indiana District 6 Commander Yvonne Kraemer as keynote speaker, Carmel VFW/American Legion Honor Guard, the Carmel Elementary School Choir and the Actors Theatre of Indiana. The city-wide “Home of the Brave” poster and essay contest winners also will be recognized. Students will read their winning essays at the ceremony. The event is free to the public.

Noblesville – Noblesville will host its ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at War Monument at the Hamilton County Courthouse Square in Noblesville. The ceremony will be put on by the American Legion Post No. 45 and Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 6246 and will include a 21-gun salute, opening and closing prayers and speeches. Because City of Noblesville government offices will be closed for Veterans Day, parking in the city parking lots will be free Nov. 11.

Veterans Day: A look back

For many years, the Armstrongs represented one of Westfield’s prominent and respected families.

The patriarch, Jefferson Armstrong history (1805-1881), was in his 60s when the family first arrived in Westfield in 1873. He was accompanied by his wife, Angeline, and their four children. Formerly a slave in Missouri, Armstrong worked for years as the toll-gate keeper on the Noblesville-Lebanon Pike.

His eldest son, Edward Armstrong, gained his freedom from slavery by serving with the Union

troops in Kansas and Alabama during the Civil War. After settling in Westfield he married on two occasions, the second time to Sarah Roberts, and the couple had five sons: Isaac, Irven, Ezekiel “Zeek,” Charles and Lindzey.

The five Armstrong brothers each served in the U.S. Army during World War I. All except Lindzey went overseas to France, and three brothers had front-line battle experiences. During these war years, Sarah Armstrong received acclaim as being the only mother in Indiana with five sons wearing the American military uniform at the same time.

Hope for not-for-profits?

Commentary by Terry Anker “And man, whose heav’n-erected face; The smiles of love adorn, – Man’s inhumanity to man; Makes countless thousands mourn!” observed famed Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1784. Mankind has long inflicted an abundance of inhumanity upon itself. For centuries we humans, even as we imagine art, science, literature and civilization, seem compelled to segregate and destroy ourselves. When no logical division is apparent, we will fabricate one.

In Poland for business, I extended the trip to visit the Nazi concentration camps at Auschwitz and Birkenau. Words fail to adequately describe the jarring reality of walking the lanes and into the chambers wherein so very many innocents were murdered. It is a shameful place. But, it is an important one. Our abject ability to commit unimaginable acts is only eclipsed by our desire to forget, or even in some cases deny, that they occur. The physical reminder challenges those who would eagerly forget.

These perditions brought a tortuous end to

the lives of many hundreds of thousands of Jews – likewise, many thousands more Poles, Catholics, homosexuals and others deemed inferior or even evil. Some adhere to the adage that we must study history or we are doomed to repeat it. Perhaps they have a point. But isn’t it more likely that we must study history to predict what we are likely or even inevitable to do again so that we can guard against it. Genocide, as stunningly unfortunate as it is to say, it not restricted to one time or to one race. Is it possible that the human urge to destroy is every bit as strong as the desire to build? Is the ISIS tribal extermination in the Middle East and the Christian slaughter in Africa simply a continuation of the worst in us? Even as we mourn the past, how do we defend our future?

I think I’m having a mid-life crisis and I’m only partially kidding. I’m constantly feeling discontented at work and at home, and I can’t seem to stop the anxiety over things that are completely out of my control. World events, mean people, physical signs of aging . . . it all has me thinking that a sabbatical in Saint Barts is just the ticket.

My husband Doo went through one last year.

He started working out excessively, talked of buying a convertible Porsche and seriously contemplated how to make bank and retire early.

He was engaged in parenting only partially, and even then complained of the carpools and the expense and the general time commitment of raising four children. His “manopause” lasted about six months and I’m thrilled to report he is completely back to his more realistic and happy self.

Now it’s my turn. The problem is, a mom’s collapse is far worse than a dad’s. I’m the default parent, the go-to adult who helps with homework and makes lunches and signs permission slips and coordinates transportation and cleans toilets and settles arguments and schedules appointments and creates magical birthday parties. When I’m in a bad mood, which of late seems to me the norm, “stuff” doesn’t get done, and consequently, everyone’s world turns upside-down. Then my mommy guilt kicks in and the cycle begins again.

Exacerbating the situation, my family is completely disregarding my “buttons,” though they resemble bright orange traffic barrels.

They truly don’t seem to care that the house is a disaster, that despite my best efforts I can’t improve my 5K time, or that my profession no longer carries the same joy it once did. Jeeze!

When did I turn into Danny Downer?

I am trying. I’ve come to terms with the reading glasses that taunt me from my bedside table and the fact that my first floor will never appear in Architectural Digest. I recognize that it’s not too late for a career change, and that it’s within my power to delegate many of my responsibilities, both domestic and professional, to lift some of the weight I carry.

Alas, one of my daughters is smirking at me, playing a haunting tune on her tiny air violin to signal that this descent into self-pitydom must end. Now. But I do enjoy a good Woe-Is-Me party! Wallowing in despair always makes me feel a tad bit better. Or maybe that’s the pinot finally kicking in. I might not need that tropical escape after all! Peace out.

At my age, I was aware of what was happening. Maybe it was due to too many fatty foods; there was clearly a blockage. Mary humor Ellen said not to ignore the symptoms and call a professional.

“Hello, Rex Plumbing. Can I help you?”

“Hi, Pam, it’s Dick Wolfsie. Our disposal isn’t working. All I hear is a whirring sound and I can’t stop it.”

“We don’t stop things at Rex Plumbing,” she told me. “We un-stop things.”

Everyone’s a comedian.

About an hour later, Rex knocked—on time, as always. I called out that the door was open.

I was already in the kitchen. “Where are you, Dick?” Rex screamed.

“Here, Rex,” I said.

Rex walked over to the sink, accompanied by an apprentice, apparently there to learn the trade. That’s when I noticed it.

“You don’t have any tools, Rex. Where are your tools? All you have is a plunger.”

“That’s all I need.”

“Don’t say that. No monkey wrenches? No hammers? No hydraulic pumps? If all you brought is a plunger to fix this, why do I need you? I have a plunger.”

Rex approached the sink, flicked the disposal switch and confirmed my diagnosis. Then, he deftly maneuvered his plunger into the sink’s

drain, pressed his thumb into the rubber cup to create a vacuum and in one swift but decisive maneuver fixed the problem. “We’re done here,” said Rex as he handed me the bill. I turned to his apprentice and asked if he had learned from his experience at my house. He said he had no regrets about not going to medical school.

The next day things were humming along in my kitchen, but now I had computer problems. I was trying to save some files so they could not be erased. Ironic, but now I wanted a backup. I called Kevin with Nerds On Call. He also arrived in a timely fashion, but once again, no tools.

Kevin sat down at the computer to do his magic. I had several computer issues, and Kevin worked diligently, addressing every one. Sixty minutes later he was done. I paid him exactly the same amount I had paid Rex. As Kevin was leaving I told him he had done an excellent job, but that there was something he could learn from my plumber. “And what would that be?” he asked, just a bit miffed.

“How to make a hundred bucks in 60 seconds.”

That’s when he reminded me about the time he came over to the house to fix the printer and simply put the plug back in the socket.

READERS ’ V IE W S Speeding a problem in Avalon Estates

Editor, We have lived in South Avalon Estates for two and a half years now. Within that time frame, I have witnessed many people speeding down 126th Street, right past the high school and sometimes a car will be pulled over by a policeman. What’s the big deal, you ask. The speed limit is 40 mph, says the sign up the road at the school. Well, the problem is that apparently many people are missing the FIRST sign right at the corner of Olio and 126th Street as they make a right-hand (east) turn on 126th. I have seen people come to a stop at that intersection and are looking to the left to see if there is any oncoming traffic in order for them to make a

right-hand turn on a red light. Even if the light is green, people are paying attention to the road and traffic, hence, totally missing the sign that says 25 mph between the hours of 7 (or 7:30) a.m. to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday very near that corner. There is one sign stating that, on the north side of the road just a short distance past the entrance to South Avalon Estates which is easily seen. The other sign that is being missed is right as you turn east at the high school onto 126th Street. That sign needs to be either moved or use flashing lights to warn people of the speed as the elementary school on Promise Road does. No one misses that sign.

Trustee responds to cemetery story

Editor, This letter is in response to the Oct. 21 article “Olio Road cemeteries are worth remembering.”

One of the responsibilities of each township is the maintenance of what’s considered its abandoned (or non-owned) cemeteries. Two of the cemeteries referenced in the article fall under our care (Brooks and McKay), as well six additional cemeteries in our township. I feel it’s very important to care for our cemeteries and preserve our history. Over the past few years, my

office has worked diligently to clear brush and remove dead trees to prevent further damage to existing headstones. We have repaired and installed fencing to help secure these cemeteries.

These efforts are in preparation for a complete restoration and repair of all eight cemeteries.

Funding for this estimated $190,000 project was appropriated by our board on Oct. 29. We hope to begin the project in late winter or early spring.

Off-Main Street Players enjoy diversion from life

Theresa Koleszar views acting as a stress reliever from life’s day-to-day pressures.

“It’s kind of playtime for theater grownups,” Koleszar said.

Koleszar is performing in Zionsville’s Community Theatre’s Off-Main Street Players’ showing of “God of Carnage.” The oneact, 90-minute play includes four performers. The black comedy, which won the 2009 Tony Award for best play, centers on two couples from Brooklyn who get together after their 11-year-old sons are in a playground fight.

The Off-Main Street Players’ first performance was in 1966. That first group eventually disbanded but reformed in 2005.

Marcus Waye, a 41-year-old Fishers resident who appeared in the reformed Off-Main Street Players’ first production as a bellhop in “Plaza Suite” in 2005, is directing “God of Carnage.”

After being asked to direct this fall, Waye recommended the show because not many theater groups have done it.

“It seemed like a good fit for the venue and the people we could cast,” said Waye, who works in the IT department at Carmel Clay Public Library. “Just seemed like a natural fit for me because it’s a comedy and I like comedies more.”

This is the seventh play Waye has directed for

the Off-Main Street Players.

“Whatever I’m doing is my most favorite at the time,” he said. “If I’m acting, I really enjoy that. If I’m directing, that seems to be what I really like.”

Carmel resident Tanya Haas, 42, said she considers it more of a drama with comic elements.

“This is the first time in a very long time I’ve had a fairly dramatic role, so it’s been a different experience,” Haas said. “The whole play is a roller-coaster ride.”

Haas is a part-time middle school drama teacher at Midwest Academy in Carmel.

“I just enjoy getting out of my regular life and getting to pretend to be other people for a while,” she said. “It’s the only thing I do just for me.”

Dr. Larry Adams, a Brownsburg resident who has his family medicine practice in Zionsville, has a similar reason for acting.

“It’s that opportunity to step outside of yourself and put everything else behind you,” said Adams, who began acting in 1988. “You can’t take the rest of your life on stage. You can be that different person for a short period of time.”

Adams, 54, followed in the acting footsteps of his mother, Jean Adams, a well-known Indianapolis-area community theater actress.

“My mother started doing it after my father passed away and I watched her and thought, ‘That seems like fun, I’ll try it,’” Adams said. “By that time I was in residency. I was a latecomer.”

For 51-year-old Zionsville resident Kirk Horn, this play is a new acting experience.

“I have to come to practice every night,” said Horn, an attorney with Mandel Horn law firm in Carmel. “I’m never off stage. I’ve never had an experience like this before. If you screw up, it snowballs, I assume. I’m just kidding.”

Koleszar, a 36-year-old Lebanon resident who has been acting for about 20 years, said it is fun working with a small cast.

“It’s a big change from working with a big, full musical,” Koleszar said. “I do a lot of musicals as well. I like a variety but I enjoy comedies the most.”

Zucchini Cornbread Casserole

Behind Bars: White Wine Granita

Ingredients: 4 cups shredded zucchini. one onion, chopped. two eggs, beaten. 1 (8.5 ounce) package dry corn muffin mix. 1/2 teaspoon salt.

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper. eight ounces Cheddar cheese, shredded.

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 2-quart casserole dish. In a large bowl mix together the zucchini, onion, eggs, muffin mix, salt and pepper. Stir in four ounces of the cheese. Spread this mixture into a greased 2-quart casserole dish; top with remaining four ounces of cheese. Bake for 60 minutes. Makes eight servings.

Ingredients: Two cups fullbodied white wine. 1/2 cup unsweetened apple juice.

1/3 cup water.

1/2 cup sugar.

Dried apple slices, for serving.

Instructions: Place wine, juice, sugar and 1/3 cup water in a bowl, and whisk until sugar is completely dissolved, about two minutes. Pour into a 9-by-13-inch baking dish, cover with plastic wrap, and place in the freezer.

Using the tines of a fork, stir the mixture every 30 minutes, scraping edges and breaking up any ice chunks as the mixture freezes, until granita is slushy and frozen, about three hours.

IWS summons heroes for Nov. 15 show

By Jay Harvey • news@currentinwestfield.com The task of building a thematically cohesive program is all part of the musical adventure Charles P. Conrad enjoys as diconcert rector of the Indiana Wind Symphony. Before a note is sounded, public performances by the all-volunteer concert band are designed to help sell themselves.

“We’re always thinking what would be a good theme and what would work musically,” Conrad said in a phone interview. “Not every piece has to fit the theme, and some are tangential to it.

If you try too hard, all of a sudden a program doesn’t work.” He’s been crafting themes and preparing music for the ensemble’s concerts since founding it in 1997.

“Summon the Heroes,” the concert Conrad will conduct at the Palladium on Nov. 15, is built around a piece of the same title that film composer John Williams wrote for the U.S. Marine Band. It was conceived for the centennial of modern Olympic Games in Atlanta. The 1996 work was recently released for general performance, so Conrad snatched it up for the Indiana Wind Symphony.

Different kinds of heroes are part of this concert’s focus. Mark Camphouse’s “Movement for Rosa” honors Rosa Parks, whose refusal to move to the back of the bus in 1955 started one of the triggering actions of the civil rights movement, the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The composer

Great music for orchestra has been transcribed for band, and one such piece in particular fits this month’s theme. Beethoven’s “Egmont” Overture “works extremely well in band transcriptions,” Conrad said. “The themes are in the winds and the piece is based on melodies that don’t get too hard.” The work is the most frequently performed piece of incidental music the German composer wrote to accompany a play about a 16th–century Dutch nobleman who opposed Spanish repression of his homeland.

The heroic theme is also carried out by the “Colonel Bogey March,” which became familiar to a wide public as whistled by British soldier-captives in the 1957 World War II movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai.”

Bubba’s 33 expands franchise

By Ann Craig-Cinnamon • ann@youarecurrent.com Looking for the only burger in town with 33 percent ground bacon, not to mention a 33-ounce bee? Then stop at now open the newly opened Bubba’s 33 at 9779 North by Northeast Blvd., Fishers.

Jack Brittingham, managing partner, said the name also comes from the year prohibition was repealed, which was 1933.

Bubba’s specializes in pizza, burgers and beer and also offers steaks, fish and chicken wings.

Brittingham emphasized that everything is made from scratch, including the pizza dough and sauce and the burger buns. The restaurant

offers family dining and two bars. The 33-ounce beer is called the Bubb-a-dub.

This is the second Bubba’s 33 to open in the United States – the first being Fayetteville, N.C. Others are planned, including one in Greenwood.

The chain is owned by Texas Roadhouse. Brittingham, who lives in Fishers, said this will be a great market for the chain.

“I think it’s going to be huge,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of people really excited about it. Of course, because of the 33 percent bacon, but especially this site itself has been vacant for quite few years and was a bit of an eyesore so I’m excited to freshen up and spruce up this area. With 110,000 cars that drive by here (along I-69), definitely tons of people are able to see it.”

Gut check: Is it celiac disease? news@currentinfishers For years, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, the television host and former “Survivor” contestant, couldn’t figure out what made her wellness sick with unrelenting bloating, cramps and diarrhea.

Then while starving as a contestant on “Survivor,” her symptoms vanished. The culprit, it turns out, was celiac disease, an abnormal reaction to gluten.

Ninety-five percent of celiac sufferers go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, according to the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness. CD is a genetic autoimmune response to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye, among other grains, that damages the small intestine and hinders food absorption. Left untreated, CD can trigger complications ranging from infertility to osteoporosis and small intestine lymphoma, among others.

Symptoms vary widely, says Dr. Jianmin Tian, a gastroenterologist with St.Vincent Medical Group.

Patients may experience recurring abdominal pain, diarrhea, anemia, and delayed development in children. Infertility, joint pain, skin rash and fatigue also plague some patients, who tend to fall into four categories:

• Classic: Characterized by classic symptoms like diarrhea, malabsorption, weight loss, and abdominal discomfort.

• Atypical: May have minor intestinal symptoms, but may also have anemia, dental enamel defects, osteoporosis, arthritis, increased liver enzyme levels, neurological symptoms or infertility.

• Silent: Symptom-free, but abnormalities show up in blood test and small intestine biopsy.

• Latent: Also symptom-free, but only detectable in blood tests.

“Unfortunately, classic cases are the tip of the iceberg,” Tian said. Many cases are difficult to diagnose, partly because symptoms mimic other conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome.

Type 1 diabetics and people with a first-degree relative with CD are at higher risk. Otherwise, the general population has approximately a onein-140 chance of developing CD. Once diagnosed, a lifelong gluten-free diet is the only treatment. The Celiac Disease Foundation (www.celiac.org) has more information.

A: Tony this is a great question. The important thing here is that your sunglasses have 100 percent UV protection. As you probably know there are three types of UV: UVA, UVB and UVC. All are harmful to the eye and that damage is cumulative over time. But most sunglasses don’t specify type.

The cheaper ones also don’t tend to keep their shape as long and the optics are not as good. An important note is that it is better to wear no sunglasses than to wear sunglasses without 100 percent UV protection. The tint opens up the pupils and then more harmful UV rays enter the eye.

Sneaking into the language

Question: “I was corrected the other day at the office when I used the word ‘snuck.’ My coworker insists that the grammar guy correct past tense of ‘sneak’ is ‘sneaked’ – but that sounds so weird to me. Would you really say, ‘I sneaked out of the house to see a movie?’

Can you settle this debate for us?”

Answer: I’m afraid you’ve stumbled into one of the great grammar debates of our time – one that pits us against our fine British friends across the pond.

Right out the gate, I will say this: “Sneaked” is the formal, standard and “most correct” past tense of “sneak.” I don’t have any Ian Fleming novels lying around, but if I did, I would bet the word “snuck” doesn’t appear on a single page.

That is, unless Mr. Fleming’s works go through an American copy editor these days.

The Oxford Dictionaries describe the origins of “snuck” as dialectical (U.S.) and non-standard.

Merriam-Webster – the American company, mind you – takes a much harsher tone, saying that “snuck” first appeared as a “dialectical and probably uneducated form.” Ouch.

Both Oxford and Merriam-Webster go on to recognize that, however inauspicious its beginnings, “snuck” has gone mainstream. “’Snuck’ has risen to the status of standard and to approximate equality with ‘sneaked,’” Merriam-Webster says. Oxford notes that there is now evidence of “snuck” being used by British speakers as well.

At the end of the day, I would probably lose my unofficial Grammar Guy badge if I did not reaffirm “sneaked” as the standard past tense of “sneak.” That being said, don’t be afraid to use “snuck” in less formal contexts and with our nation’s trademark stubborn pride.

Notre Dame: Famous supporters Commentary by Don Knebel The Cathedral of Notre Dame is perhaps the most famous church in the world. Its current configuration has links to an ancient Travel vision and a famous novel.

In 1160 the Bishop of Paris wanted a cathedral befitting the most populous city in Europe. For the location of his new cathedral he selected the Île de la Cité, an island in the Seine, previously home to a temple to Jupiter and an early church. Pope Alexander III laid the foundation stone in 1163 and workers began constructing the east end, surrounding the altar, so Mass could be said during construction of the remaining sections. As the eastern walls designed to accommodate large altar windows rose higher, they began to flex outwardly. The solution included buttresses extending from upper points on the walls to the ground, an idea suggested by the vision of a restored Temple reported in the Book of Ezekiel but not employed previously.

When the cathedral was finally completed in 1345, it was 420 feet long and had massive twin towers, each 230 feet tall. Colorfully painted gargoyles directed rainwater away from the walls.

Notre Dame’s flying buttresses, pointed arches, and rose windows became the model for sub-

sequent French cathedrals, a style Renaissance writers pejoratively labeled “Gothic.”

During the French Revolution, opponents of the Catholic Church obliterated visible symbols of Christianity and converted Notre Dame into a “Temple of Reason.” Guillotine-inspired revolutionaries beheaded statues of Biblical kings of Judah, mistaking them for despised French kings. In 1801, Notre Dame was again usable as a church but was in a serious state of disrepair. Victor Hugo wrote “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” in 1830 to call attention to the value of Gothic architecture and the urgency of rescuing the cathedral. The popular novel spurred a controversial 20-year restoration that added a spire but left the famous gargoyles unpainted.

Notre Dame is the most popular attraction in Paris, welcoming twice as many visitors as the Eiffel Tower. Far fewer people visit the National Museum of the Middle Ages, where the stone heads of the cathedral’s decapitated kings, rediscovered in 1977, are on display.

Cabinet modifications, warm colors transform a kitchen Commentary by Larry Greene EXISTING KITCHEN: Located in the Bay Hill subdivision in Carmel, these homeowners were feeling cramped in their blueprint for 20-year-old kitchen. “Not improvement only did the kitchen not fit our personal style, it also lacked storage space and did not provide enough seating.” The existing cabinets were still in good shape, so the owners decided to keep them.

CABINET MODIFICATIONS: “We desperately needed a larger fridge; however, the existing cabinets were custom built around the old fridge.” To accommodate the larger French door style refrigerator, the existing cabinetry was modified. The cabinets and double ovens that originally sat to the left of the fridge were relocated. A custom 12-inch pull out cabinet was installed adding dedicated storage space for spices and cooking oils. Moldings and new hardware was installed for a custom look. The original white cabinets were then painted a creamy white to add warmth.

EXPANDED ISLAND: To give the homeowners additional countertop space and seating, the original u-shaped island and bulkhead were removed and replaced with a new island stretching almost 10 feet in length. The island was constructed using semi-custom cabinetry in a contrasting chocolate finish including two deco-

BEVERAGE STATION: “Being entertainers, it was important to have a dedicated area for guests to grab drinks without interrupting the cook or making an inconvenient walk to the garage.” To accomplish this goal, the previous family room off the kitchen was converted into a beverage station. The chocolate finish of the cabinetry and matching granite countertops give the beverage station a consistent look with the kitchen island.

Previous experience with sales and/or theater is helpful, but not required. Presenters must also be “morning” people as some very early departure times occur in this position.
