Bogan named to Easter Seals board – Dr. Michael Bogan of Fishers is one of five new members to the Board of Directors for Easter Seals Crossroads. Fresh Market delivers unique choices

Local residents are flocking to the area’s newest upscale grocery store, The Fresh Market. Only four days after its Oct. 23 Grand Opennow open ing, the parking lot was packed.

It’s easy to see why. Every moment of the shopping experience is designed to be sensory-pleasing, from the down-home chalkboard sign outside advertising the daily specials to the smell of cinnamon and pumpkin bread in the entryway.

The Fresh Market General Manager, Laurie Campbell, 59, said the variety offered makes shopping at the store a special experience. The store provides organic, conventional and unusual items.

When asked to elaborate on unusual, she said, “We offer a seasonal item called Buddha Hands.

Some countries use it for decorative purposes. We also have star fruit and Brussels sprouts on a stalk.

All types of unusual things like that.”

Campbell is also very proud of her staff.

“I took an active role in hiring all 92 people for this store. We chose engaging people, who make customers want to come back,” she said. Retail clerks

cheerfully ask customers if they can help them find something and will personally escort them to the item to make sure they find it. Don’t know what to do with artichokes? Ask a staff member in produce to suggest a recipe.

The Fresh Market, 9774 East 116th St., is the fifth store to open in Indiana, and the 146th in the nation.

While it’s a large chain, Campbell draws attention to its warmth.

“We encourage sampling,” she said, which “educates the guest,” and is part of what makes shopping there special.

The Fresh Market is also civic-minded. Locally, they have already begun partnering with Third Phase and donating food to Fishers United Methodist Church Food Pantry.

Bob Goodrich, 62, a longtime Fresh Market customer who now works at the Fishers store part time, summed up the store’s approach best: “old world and new world come together,” he said. Four arrested in attempted burglaries – Fishers police arrested four Indianapolis men on Oct. 24 for breaking into vehicles in Indianapolis and attempting to break into cars in Fishers. Around midnight, an officer patrolling the area near 96th Street and Interstate 69 saw two men standing in the Studio 6 Hotel parking lot. When they noticed the officer, they ducked behind a truck. The two men came into view when the officer asked them to move from behind the truck. Two other men were found hiding inside a Pontiac Grand Am. The officer searched the vehicle and tools used to commonly break into vehicles and several items that did not belong to the four men were found. The men were taken to the Fishers Police Department for questioning and admitted to several thefts in Indianapolis. Kyle Bates, 20, Jamiyl Gilbert, 21, Lester Pargo, 20, and William Pargo, 21, were all preliminarily charged with conspiracy to commit theft, a Class D felony; and possession of stolen property, a Class D felony. They were all taken to the Hamilton County Jail.

FJH celebrates diversity

Fishers Junior High’s Cultural Competency committee and the seventh-grade Social Studies Dept. will be presenting their third anculture nual International Fair from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5. Students, families and the entire community are invited.

More than 60 nations are represented in FJH’s student population and, according to social studies teacher Maureen Randall, the International Fair’s purpose is to celebrate that cultural diversity.

“Students are creating projects for display in a variety of ways but they all highlight and/ or study the countries that make up FJH,” said Randall.

Guests can enjoy a wide variety of performances, food, art and other displays that were created by FJH seventh-graders.

Past attendees have been impressed by the students’ creativity. FJH eighth-grader Christian Ibrahim attended last year’s International Fair.

“The International Fair was a great place to learn about different cultures that are in our own school,” Ibrahim said. “There were lots of people that brought different kinds of foods, art and artifacts to the fair,” he continued, “and I had lots of fun learning new things that were a major part of different families. I remember eating a piece of chicken that was really spicy so I had to rush to a water fountain quickly before my

tongue burst into flames.”

The FJH Cultural Competency committee and the Social Studies Dept. are proud of their school’s diversity and are excited to showcase different cultures at the fair.

“One student has created a display on Germany and displayed their grandfather’s diary in German,” Randal said. “Several students learned how to make family recipes from India, China and Mexico, and several students who are immigrants themselves will tell their stories as to what it was like to move to the USA.” The International Fair at FJH is a group effort.

Ten FJH teachers work together to organize the event. Parents and families are encouraged to share in any way possible.

During a recent annual educational conference, the Indiana Township Association bestowed the Charles Bogden Memorial volunteerism Township Board Member of the Year upon Ed Pierce of Delaware Township, Hamilton County (Fishers), where he has served since 1999.

Mr. Pierce was awarded the honor by his peers for demonstrating the essence of a public servant. “The ITA is certainly proud of the volunteerism that Ed exhibits in his township,” said Mary Hart, ITA’s President.

Marilyn Schenkel, who also serves on Delaware Township’s Board, said in a letter of recommendation that “Ed Pierce displays qualities which are unique to today’s public servants. He always puts the good of the Township over his own personal gain. His dedication goes beyond what the statute requires from us. He is always the first one to the township meetings and the last one to leave.”

Several letters of recommendation for Mr. Pierce’s recognition highlighted his work on behalf of the community’s Freedom Festival. That work earned him the William D. Kehl Jr. Volunteer of the Year award for 2013.

His Trustee, Debbie Driskell, wrote for his nomination, “In my 23 years as Delaware Township Trustee, I have served with many board members; but few have been as involved and willing to move ‘above the call of duty’ like Ed Pierce.”

School Board approves budget

By Nancy Edwards • nancy@youarecurrent.com The HSE School Board meeting approved the school system budget for 2014-2015. The school tax rate will be reduced by 2 Education percent.

The HSE Budget Study Committee will be discussing ways to save money for the next calendar school year, according to Supt. Dr. Mike Smith. The panel will examine ideas to reduce expenditures in all funds by $5,000,000 over the course of two years.

The committee will meet on a regular basis beginning Oct. 30 and continue until spring when final recommendations are made. During a work session held Nov. 20, Smith will discuss some of his ideas with the board.

Focus group Leah McGrath from Sease, Gerig and Associates presented a proposal for gathering community feedback and developing a communication strategy regarding budget reductions. The con-

sultant organization recommended conducting focus groups for a broad audience. The focus group may be conducting a survey for their audience. The board approved the plan.

School test results The Curriculum Team presented ISTEP, NWEA, and IREAD data and identified strengths, areas needed to improve, goals linked to individual school improvement plans and the next steps at the district level to address growth areas.

The end-of-course results showed a steady increase in the passing rate for both ELA and math overall.

Principal receives award Fishers High School Principal Jason Urban was recognized by the board for being named the District 5 Principal of the Year. District 5 includes the following counties: Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Marion, Morgan, and Shelby.

Brooks to visit FHS U.S. Rep. Susan Brooks will make an appearance at Fishers High School at 1 p.m. on Nov. 7.

Fundraising concert helps Ukraine orphans – Indianapolis-based rock artist Samuel Lawton will be performing in a fundraiser, “Red Shirt Costume Party,” on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. at Vardagen, 8684 E. 116th St., Fishers. The fundraiser is designed to raise awareness for the Romaniv Boys Orphanage in Romaniv, Ukraine. While Lawton was doing charity work there, he was moved by the deplorable conditions and poverty in which the orphans lived, due primarily to lack of funding. One 19-year-old mentally-handicapped boy had a particular impact on Lawton and inspired him to write the song, “Red Shirt Kid.” The event will be far more than a concert -- there will be a D.J., door prizes, a costume contest, and more, bringing needed attention to a good cause as well as one of Fishers’ best kept secrets, Vardagen, a vintage high fashion clothing store. Mayoral vote: Twice in 2 years Commentary by Larry Lannan

Imagine for a moment the night of a presidential election. The president-elect gives an acceptance speech, thanks his followers, then turns around and prepares government for another election one year later.

That doesn’t happen in America. It doesn’t normally happen in Indiana. But in Fishers, something like that will happen in 2014.

In November 2012, Fishers voters approved a referendum to transform the town into a city. A mayor will be elected. A nine-member city council will be established, with three at-large seats and six council members depending on the votes of constituents within their council districts.

Fishers has been governed by a sevenmember town council. The council members are required to live within their districts, but all are elected by the entire town.

The Indiana statutes were amended in the last legislative session and require Fishers to hold a municipal election as a city in 2014, electing a new mayor and city council that will take office in January 2015. The winners of the 2014 election will hold office for one year, calendar year 2015.

Just a few days after taking the oath of office, those newly elected city officials will need to begin filing for re-election in 2015. The primary election for the regular four-year term will be

held in May 2015.

Think about that for a moment. The new city officials will have held office for less than five months and they will be on the ballot again (assuming they all run for re-election).

The obvious question is: How did this happen?

No one knows for sure, but that doesn’t change the fact that Fishers will have a city election in 2014 and 2015.

This will put a huge amount of pressure on political activists in the Fishers area that volunteer their time and money to local political campaigns.

Just ask anyone that has been a candidate for local office or has been a key volunteer for a candidate. They will tell you how much heavy lifting is required to run a campaign for office, whether you win or lose.

Running a campaign for office in 2014 and 2015 will be a challenge. Even with all the pressure, no one anticipates a shortage of political candidates.

When the new mayor gives her/his acceptance speech in November 2014, the mayor-elect likely will have an important meeting the next day to begin planning the 2015 campaign.

Eagle Scout builds bat house

By Dawn Pearson • news@currentinfishers.com Did you know a single, little brown bat can eat up to a 1,000 mosquitoes in one hour? They also help prevent the need for environmentally harmful sprays, chemicals, volunteerism biological agents and pesticides.

Jared Westerfield, 14, bit into an insect problem when his sister’s Girl Scout troop was working on a service project in an outdoor classroom behind Riverside Junior High School.

“There were bugs and mosquitoes all over,” Laura Westerfield, Jared’s mother, explained. “And he came up with the idea for natural pest control for his Eagle Scout project.”

The bat house went up along the river behind the school for his project.

“It was a good location because the bleachers and fields are back there, and the cross country runners won’t have to spray themselves as much when they are running,” Laura explained.

The bats eating the bugs help the environment too.

“Whenever there is a nature area, or anytime there is water, you are limited to what you can do for pest control,” Laura said.

Scout Master Joe Fenimore said Jared wanted to help control the population in a natural way.

“You just put the bat houses up and the bats find them,” Fenimore said.

By Nancy Edwards • nancy@youarecurrent.com Two months have passed since construction at the intersection of 96th Street and Allisonville Road has been completed. Since COVER STORY then, drivers have been using the median U-turns in place of left-hand turn signals at each corner.

The project was designed to reduce accidents and wait time at traffic lights, especially during peak rush hour times, while improving overall service.

Now the question up for debate is: Has the recent change improved the problems?

According to Jeff Hill, director of engineering for the Town of Fishers, the answer is yes.

“The feedback has been positive; people are saying ,‘Boy, I can really get (to my destination) quicker now, the reduced congestion is definitely there’. This was one of our goals,” Hill said. “There are a handful of people who have contacted us and said ‘I thought there was no way this would have worked before’; we’ve got a handful of converts.”

The 16-phase, locally funded $8,000,000 project began in April 2012 and concluded in August.

according to Hill.

The project has often been dubbed “Michigan Left,” after the frequent usage of median U-turns along roads and highways in Michigan since the 1960s.

Perhaps the biggest challenge since the project’s completion has been confusion among drivers who may not be paying attention to signals directing them to where they can or cannot turn, resulting in crashes.

Chelsea Atwell, a server at Café Du Meemo, 9642 Allisonville Rd., said she has seen a number of accidents with to people ignoring the no-left-

turn signs.

“I think people haven’t been here in a while and don’t know what’s going on,” she said. “It’s the first time they’ve seen this.”

Hill said that 99 percent of the time, drivers are not afraid to honk their horns to alert a driver attempting to turn left where they shouldn’t. He added that the town has been trying to educate those who are unfamiliar with the new system.

“The police have been a pretty good presence (at the intersection) and have been fairly forgiving in the beginning,” he said. “We are pointing people to the town’s website.”

Some businesses along the intersection, including CVS Pharmacy, 9550 Allisonville Rd., have reported that their business has not been affected by the new system.

Store manager of CVS, Victoria Lobb, acknowledged that while business slowed during construction, “we’re getting back to normal.”

However, others including store manager Moe Patel of Subway, 9546 Allisonville Rd., have stated that their business has suffered significantly.

“We’ve been losing a lot of business,” Patel said. “We used to have more customers; now they have to make a U-turn and then have to stop four times (to get here). This place is dead.

Some businesses are OK, some are dead.”

As for residents like Velda Qualkenbush, several have said they still do not see the advantages to the project and find the system confusing.

“In my opinion it was a tax dollar waste,” Qualkenbush said. “I still do not see how it helped traffic flow.”

Hill acknowledged that while he understands the community as a whole may not entirely be on board for the new project, he thinks they may have a change of heart after witnessing the advantages.

“There are people on the opposite side who still think ‘This is dumb; why do I have to turn right to go left?’ We try to explain the overall reduced time (by using the U-turns). As they continue to drive, they’ll see (the system) is working for them.”

Today, the armed forces are plagued with budget cuts and stymied recruitment efforts due to the rising obesity rate and failure of recruits to pass drug tests and keep clean criminal records. Would reinstating a draft solve these military recruitment woes? Could today’s coddled youth withstand the pressure and responsibility?

Recognition and special thanks are extended to those who have served our country in the past, to the military personnel currently serving and to those brave enough to enlist to sustain the armed forces. Visit a monument, fly your American flag, attend a Veteran’s Day parade or even visit a recruitment center on this Veteran’s Day - in honor of freedom.

Invisible chains Commentary by Terry Anker We’ve all faced it. The feeling of rejection and exclusion can be devastating. That moment when one is cut from the team, fails to get elected, doesn’t get the part or misses the promotion is one that tests both our self-confidence and our resolve to carry on. Our ability to confront the disappointment can either urge us develop skills that will ultimately deliver us to a higher level of success or lead to self-evaluation as unworthy in the most unnecessarily expansive fashion.

Turn of the century animal trainers implemented the practice of chaining one leg of baby elephants to a stake in the ground. The restraint was strong enough to limit the movement of the creatures; but as the pachyderms matured their immense size and strength would have made it easy to overwhelm the constraint. Yet they did not move. With the hawser unconnected and lying on the ground, the giant creatures stayed in place as if held by an invisible force. In fact, the manacle

was often no longer connected to anything. The highly intelligent creatures remembered the feeling of restricted movement and simply stood still whenever the shackle was is in place.

Younger humans seem much more resilient than we who have spent a little more time on the planet. It is hard to find a four-year old who doesn’t greet failure as a normal part of the learning process. Yet, many of our adult peers are paralyzed with anxiety about even trying to develop any new skills or move outside of our long-established comfort zones. The pain of perceived failure is real. And, one could guess that its anticipation might be the same. Do ancient scars keep us from living up to our potential today? Why are we allowing ourselves to be constrained by invisible chains?

Our Oct. 22 cover story about property thefts being on the rise in Fishers brought some feedback – almost all of it positive.

Residents of the town seemed to appreciate Current’s examination of where things stand with respect to repelling the trend. One reader, however, found it inappropriate to have Cesar Rodriguez, an officer in the Fishers Police Dept., as the smiling subject on the cover.

Actually, the reader lambasted us in an e-mail, insinuating that perhaps Rodriguez should smile less and prevent further crime. Inasmuch as the camera never blinks, the shot of Rodriguez depicts who he is. It’s our job to show people – civil servants and otherwise – exactly that. And thus we shall keep doing so.

••• Perhaps a health-insurance carrier has spurned you or someone you know recently.

It simply cannot be a pleasant experience. We know a few folks who’ve endured the “rejected” treatment. We’re just wondering here, but don’t you believe it is possible that because of all the confusion and uncertainty of ObamaCare that insurance companies almost “have to” reject some folks’ attempts at renewal? After all, our illustrious leader, President Barack Obama, has done a fairly solid job of running down insurance companies (and they’re not completely innocent of all his charges) since before he campaigned for the last presidential election. He has maligned them – again, deservedly so in some instances – to the point where there’s no luster left. They’re viewed as villainous, and so their reputations are left tarnished. We further wonder whether any court would entertain a lawsuit brought by one or more carriers against the president on the grounds of damaging their brands. Yes, a lawsuit. If someone maligned your business to the point where it was affecting perception of it, and, as a byproduct, its ability to successfully engage in commerce, wouldn’t you sue for slander? Just asking.

On the way home from a recent trip to Kentucky, our middle son did something he has never done before, at least in front of humor me. He punched his older brother square in the head with full intention to hurt. Just like that, his skinny arm shot across the aisle and landed right on the temple.

I saw the jab in the rearview mirror and almost crashed the van. I was in such shock that I could only exclaim, “Andrew!”, while my husband Doo literally lost his fashizite. I pulled off at the next exit so our awe-struck family could pull itself together.

What had happened? Why had our sweet boy suddenly snapped? Amidst a flood of tears in the men’s restroom off I-65, he explained to Doo that he’d finally tired of being bullied by his bratty brother. That he couldn’t stand for one more second the teasing and the taunting. So he’d hit him, and hit him hard. (Lest you be concerned for the injured party, the only bruise suffered was a massive one to his ego.) Doo, in an amazing testament to his parenting skills, calmly walked Andrew through the cons of using physical violence to solve one’s problems, but then ended with “Nice shot, by the way. Don’t ever do it again, but definitely a nice shot.”

It was. Back on the road, I had to stifle a giggle. How many times have I myself wanted to pop my first-born? Ten? Twenty? And that’s

just in the past week. Fifteen-year-old boys are buttheads, plain and simple. Is it any wonder that some dark part of me is still applauding my courageous seventh-grader for taking him down a peg? I am, after all, always telling my kids to stand up for themselves and not to become victims. How can I possibly be angry that one of our sons finally fought back?

The weird thing is, their relationship has significantly improved since the controversial beatdown. Sure my soon-to-be driver continues to deliver condescending remarks and smart-aleck comments on a regular basis, but I have not heard any of his usual ribbing about my younger son’s height (Andrew is significantly shorter than his 6-foot brother) nor have I seen any attempts by said giant to bully his sibling off the Xbox.

Our freshman has been treating Andrew more as a friend, and dare I say, with a modicum of respect. Hooray!

I guess you just never really know how close someone is to his breaking point until it all explodes in one horrific, but somehow glorious, moment. Even a blow to a loved one’s big noggin can have positive results. Peace out.

Pianist Di Wu – ‘She has fire in her playing’

In all areas of her life, concert pianist Di Wu seems energized by following steep learning curves and making adjustsymphony ments as her taste and knowledge develop.

When she’s cooking at home in New York, she experiments with dishes she’s sampled in her travels.

“When I find something good in a restaurant, I try to do that at home,” she said by phone from a hotel in South Dakota, where she performed recently on her way to a Nov. 9 appearance with the Carmel Symphony Orchestra at the Palladium.

She’s also a passionate tennis fan. She doesn’t play out of concern for her valuable wrists, but she tweeted from the U.S. Open men’s championship in September. Rooting for Novak Djokovic, looking back Wu was gracious about the man who bested him, Rafael Nadal.

“Nadal played an incredible year, and he deserves the crown,” she said.

“You can talk with her about anything,” marveled CSO music director David Bowden, who is working with her for the eighth time. “She’s a brilliant young lady and a fun person, and she’s voracious in her appetite for other things besides music.”

Of course, it’s Di Wu’s professional course as a musician that’s foremost in his mind. Bowden first heard of her in 2005 when she won an international piano competition in Hilton Head, S.C. “A member of my Columbus artistic team … was there and called me up, ‘My goodness! You must hire her!’” he said.

Four years ago, Wu was a finalist in the Van Cliburn Competition in Fort Worth, Texas, yet failed to win a prize - a jury snub considered almost scandalous by some. The Wall Street Journal’s correspondent wrote: “Nothing in recent memory has been as shocking as this year’s top prizes, which ignored the most musically mature and sensitive pianist competing in the finals.”

Bowden has treasured opportunities to have the 29-year-old Chinese native as a soloist in the orchestras he directs, not only in Carmel but Terre Haute and Columbus, as well. This will be her third time playing with the CSO in the Palladium, where the audience loves her, Bowden said.

“She did Rachmaninoff’s Second (Piano Concerto) in February 2012 and we’ve got a recording of it,” he said proudly. “I think it’s the very best concert we’ve ever done since I started here (in 1999).”

orchestra, both suggested by Bowden: Franz Liszt’s Concerto No. 1 in E-flat and George Gershwin’s “I Got Rhythm” Variations.

“When David has a suggestion I’m always all ears,” Wu said. “I’ve been wanting to learn the Liszt piece; it’s wonderful he gave me the opportunity to perform it. And there is much to say about Gershwin. I’ve done Rhapsody in Blue, the Concerto in F and the Second Rhapsody it’s brilliant music.”

Wu, who came with her mother to the U.S. in her midteens to study, offered this assessment of how she’s developed since winning the Hilton Head competition.

“I’ve got a better understanding of myself my emotional and overall strengths,” she said.

“I’m more aware of what I’m doing now. If something doesn’t work, I know how to fix it.

When musicians grow up, there’s a little more depth to you.”

More depth doesn’t imply anything stodgy, however. “She is unbelievably exciting; she has fire in her playing,” Bowden said. “Her phrasing is so expressive and so spontaneous. When we’re in a concert playing a piece, I never know what she’s going to do and she never knows what I’m going to do - it’s so much fun. And the audience feels that and likes that.”

Cold-weahter foods taste good, too Commentary by Joe Drozda and Bob Bley After you have tailgated for two or three seasons, you recognize that once the weather begins to turn cold, certain foods appear more frequently on the typical tailgating menu. We decided to survey people in football stadium parking lots and on our Website www.tailgatershandbook.com to see if we could quantify the popularity of certain cold-weather foods. Here are our results for the four primary menu categories: • Main course preference: Chili 46 percent, sausage 18 percent, soup 8 percent and burgers, ribs and sandwiches 6 percent.

Fishers Wind Symphony to perform news@currentinfishers.com The Fishers Wind Symphony, under the direction of Dr. Keith Kunda, will present a themed concert, titled, “Marches, Russymphony sians, and Other International Friends,” on Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Christ the Savior Lutheran Church in Fishers.

Following the playing of our national anthem, the concert will open with Russian Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture” composed originally for orchestra in 1954 and transcribed for band by Donald Hunsberger. The orchestra version of this piece was used as the theme for the 1980 Summer Olympics. Also from Russia comes a band version of “The Great Gate of Kiev,” from Modest Mussorgsky’s piano suite, “Pictures at an Exhibition.”

From France comes a solo piece by Gabriel Faure that features the principal flute in the Wind Symphony, Charlotte Kunz, titled “Fantasie.”

The Australian composer Percy Grainger will be heard in two works, “Irish Tune,” (more commonly known as “Danny Boy”) and “Shepherd’s Hey.”

Music from Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man” is the Broadway piece on the program to make sure that America is also represented.

The “marches” part of the concert consists of three very different pieces of music. William Walton’s coronation march, “Crown Imperial,” (written for the coronation of England’s King George VI in 1937), Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Folk Songs from Somerset March,” and Charles Ives’ “Country Band March,” demonstrate that the word “march” can include a wide variety of musical styles.

Tickets will be sold at the door, priced at $10 for adults and $5 with a student identification.

Discounted tickets can be purchased in advance at Christ the Savior Lutheran Church for $8 for adults and $4 for students. Hamilton Town Center will kick off the holiday season with a day of family fun and festivities on the village streets of the diversion Noblesville outdoor mall. From 1 to 9 p.m., the fourth annual Holiday Festival will light up the season for area families with live entertainment, Santa’s grand arrival and much more, before capping off the evening with an unforgettable fireworks display.

“We really try to make it a family event. It’s a family affair is our overall theme,” said Ed Huebner, director of mall marketing. “This Holiday Festival has become a holiday staple for the Noblesville community and surrounding areas. The event brings together the excitement of the season.”

The event will feature two stages with each offering various entertainment for all ages. The main stage will showcase live music by My Yellow Rickshaw and Living Proof. The second stage will be a Kids Zone where children and families can enjoy community performances by local choirs and be entertained with fire eaters, jugglers, face painters, balloon artist, magician, caricature artist and a live reindeer show. Zooperstars!, who performed on America’s Got Talent, will perform three shows at the event.

“They were one of the biggest hits throughout the event last year,” Huebner said.

The Radio Disney road crew will feature a Selena Gomez concert ticket giveaway from 1 to 3 p.m. Mrs. Claus will also be on hand to share the magic of the holiday season with old favorites and new tales in a story hour.

“At 8 p.m. we’ll have an onstage tribute to all the servicemen,” Huebner said.

“The finale of the night continues with Santa’s arrival, lighting of the 40-foot Christmas tree and fireworks extravaganza being set off. It’s a half hour finale of the whole event.”

In addition to the holiday festivities, the USO of Indiana will be recording “Messages From the Home Front,” a unique opportunity to send encouragement to those serving our country through a short video message.

Huebner said that throughout the event, the public will be able to stand in front of a backdrop, look into a video camera and say a few words.

After the event, the USO of Indiana will package the DVDs and send them to troops at military bases across the world.

“This is the first time for this,” Huebner said.

“This is the biggest event they’ve done it at.”

Franciscan Alliance announces cuts editorial@youarecurrent.com System-wide staff reductions will affect Franciscan Alliance’s 11 hospitals and health facilities in Indiana as the health system business responds to the transformative shift in hospital economics.

Officials said 275 employees or 1.4 percent of the workforce will be laid off as a result of the reduction. Franciscan Alliance has approximately 20,000 employees.

Officials said the healthcare industry is changing rapidly and economic pressures are forcing substantive changes in the field, including reduced reimbursements, new payer models, healthcare reform laws and shifts from inpatient to outpatient care.

“Franciscan Alliance has not been immune to such pressures and has found it necessary to align staffing levels to reflect lower patient volumes and reduced industry-wide reimbursements brought on by reforms associated with the Affordable Care Act,” stated Kevin Leahy, Franciscan Alliance president and CEO. “Recent trends and the new law are challenging healthcare providers to manage the continuum of care for patients more efficiently and effectively to ensure the same quality outcomes at reduced reimbursement levels.”

Like other health systems, Franciscan Alliance must cut its costs of care delivery over the next three years by 15 to 20 percent ($375 to $500 million) to remain viable. In addition to the 275 job cuts, another 650 full-time equivalent positions will be eliminated by cutting back on assigned hours, closing open positions, retirements and through attrition.

Leahy said the remaining 19,000 employees will see cutbacks in benefits in 2014. These cutbacks include the elimination of the 1.5 percent employer match to the 403b retirement savings program, elimination of the PTO buy-back program, higher employee contributions for healthcare insurance, no salary increases for management, and a new defined benefit/defined contribution pension for all co-workers not vested by Jan. 1 in the defined benefit pension plan.

Officials said the cost savings from these, and other recent pay practice changes, will help preserve hundreds of other jobs which otherwise would have to be eliminated.

“We are profoundly aware of the impact our decisions have on the lives of our co-workers and their families,” Leahy stated. “Those whose jobs will be affected by the workforce reduction will be provided with severance, extended health insurance where eligible, and outplacement assistance.”

Question from Rick A. from Fishers: I currently get health insurance for my family through my employer. I know changes Insurance are coming from health reform, but is there anything particular that I need to worry about?

Response from Jamie Ianigro: Health reform has a lot of folks concerned and confused.

The main piece of the legislation that will affect nearly everyone is the individual mandate that requires you to buy health insurance. If you like the insurance that your employer provides, you are considered covered and can stick with that program. You may also be able to switch to publicly available coverage eventually if you choose, but all that is still being figured out.

Any employer health plan you currently have qualifies as minimum essential coverage. You don’t need to change to a publicly available plan in order to avoid the fee that uninsured people may have to pay for 2014. If you’d like to explore publicly available coverage options, you can, but there are several important things to consider.

With most employer health insurance plans, your employer pays a portion of your premiums. Your employer does not need to make a contribution to

your premiums if you switch away from their plan.

You should consider this carefully before comparing your current plan to publically available plans.

If you decide to check out publically available plans, be aware that you may not qualify for lower costs on your monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs, even if your income would qualify you otherwise.

Whether you qualify for lower costs will depend on what kind of coverage your employer offers. If your job-based coverage is considered affordable and meets minimum value, you won’t be able to get lower costs on premiums or outof-pocket costs in the marketplace. This is true no matter what your income and family size are.

Your employer can tell you whether the insurance plan it offers meets minimum value and help you determine whether the plan is considered affordable for you. You can also contact your independent insurance agent if you have further questions or if you lose your employer’s insurance plan and need to see what is available.

Capuchin Crypt: Rome’s haunting bone church Commentary by Don Knebel

If your Halloween experience was not all you had hoped for, consider spending next year in Rome’s “Capuchin Crypt.” lifestyle This so-called “Bone Church” is, without a doubt, the most haunting chapel in the world.

The Capuchin friars split from the Franciscans in 1520 to restore what they considered St. Francis’ lost ideals of poverty and service, adopting the brown robes and pointed hoods associated with the poor. In about 1631, the Capuchins left their monastery near Rome’s Trevi Fountain and moved to the Capuchin Church of the Immaculate Conception, carrying with them 300 carts filled with the disinterred bones of deceased friars.

For reasons still unknown, the Capuchin friars did not rebury their departed colleagues, but instead arranged their bones in intricate patterns along the walls and ceilings of a small chapel beneath the church. As friars died, survivors added their bones to the elaborate displays.

The larger bones were arranged by type, creating a pelvis room, a leg and thigh bone room and a room of skulls. Smaller bones became floral and geometric designs, wall clocks and chandeliers.

were covered with more than 500,000 bones of 3,700 Capuchins from all over the world and the Italian poor they had served.

The earliest known description of the Capuchin Crypt comes from the Marquis de Sade, who wrote after a visit in 1775 that it was “worthy of an English mind” and he had never “seen anything more impressive.” In the nineteenth century, the crypt was open to the public only during the week following All Souls Day, two days after Halloween.

Today, the Capuchin Crypt is open year round

(except Thursdays) to promote the sobering Capuchin message that time is running out for each of us to help the poor. Near the last room is a sign in five languages reading, “What you are now, we once were; what we are now, you shall be.” If that thought doesn’t scare you, nothing will.

Creating a deluxe master shower Commentary by David Decker

The first thing many people do when they wake up in the morning (myself included) is head for the shower. Starting off with a soothing shower always puts me in the indoors right frame of mind to tackle the day. The master bathroom shower has evolved from a spot to get clean quickly into a luxurious retreat complete with multiple showerheads, massage units, body sprayers and electronic controls. Additionally, luxury showers are increasing in popularity because they take up less space and are less hazardous for aging homeowners than bathtubs.

There isn’t necessarily an ideal size for a master shower, since the measurements will be dependent on the amount of space you have available. If you want two people to be able to fit in the shower comfortably at once, the width of the shower will need to be at least 60 inches. When planning the setup of your shower, you’ll want to make sure that you can comfortably reach the temperature control when showering. Otherwise you may get uncomfortable if the water gets too cold or (worse) scald yourself if it gets too hot.

When you know the amount of space you have to work with, you can begin the process of choosing your showerhead (or showerheads).

Rain showerheads are designed to be affixed to the ceiling and give off a spa-like feeling. Showers shared by two people could benefit from two

showerheads with adjustable water pressure settings. Most of the time, dual showerheads are installed either facing each other or side-by-side.

You’ll probably want to make sure that one (or both) of the showerheads is a handheld model since they are so versatile and easy-to-use. For added luxury, you might choose to install jets or body sprays. Some models can even be controlled by a remote control system.

Rectangular shower benches have traditionally been a staple of shower design. Today, many designers are innovating the conventional design or leaving them out completely. You could even choose to install a fold-up shower bench that can be stowed when not in use. A bench is really up to you and the amount of space available.

The only downside to all of these new developments in shower technology is the added cost on your monthly water bill. However, you can seek out low-flow showerheads, which are designed to save water in an environmentally friendly way. Consider all of your options during a bathroom remodel to ensure you make the best selection and add value to your home.

• Responsible for completing 24-hour on-call Crisis Line shifts and providing backup service to the child advocacy centers as scheduled and approved by the Director of Client Services.

• Responsible for collaborating with Prevail staff, other agencies, groups, organizations, and individuals to identify and develop prevention/intervention services for victims of crime and other populations within the community, as needed.

• Responsible to represent the agency in public and private presentations to increase awareness and educate audiences as to victim-related issues as requested by the Executive Director or the Director of Client Services.

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field is required. Minimum of 2 years experience working in a victim assistance or related field.
