Bardach discovered her son Brandon Villa, a former Fishers High School student, had become addicted to heroin terribly while at Indiana University. Villa was sent to California to get clean in April 2013 and has been living in recovery. Bardach said her son was clean for more than a year when she started the group. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At first I wanted to put it behind us but I was afraid heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d relapsed,â&#x20AC;? Bardach said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I also knew that his friends continued to die.â&#x20AC;?

By Sept. 26 of 2014, he Bardach had lost 16 friends due to drug overdose. Bardach said these were friends he played sports with or were classmates. Bardach said she lost three friends in one week from Fishers and Noblesville in the summer of 2013. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I knew I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stay silent,â&#x20AC;? Bardach said So Bardach founded Hope and OVERcoming in the fall of November 2014. The nonprofit is dedicated to helping provide awareness of heroin and opioid use and creating an atmosphere of hope and recovery for those suffering from the disease of addiction through support groups, 12-step meetings, recovery coaches and faith-based ministry outreach and advocacy. All services are free. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Brandon has been very instrumental, vocal and willing to share his story to help others,â&#x20AC;?

Bardach said.

Group to host documentary Hope and OVERcoming, parenting with Indiana Addiction Issues, will hold a screening of the documentary â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Anonymous Peopleâ&#x20AC;? at

6:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 at the Community Center, 9091 East 131st St., Fishers. The film is about the 23.5 million Americans living in long-term recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs. Hope and OVERcoming is partnering with Indiana Addiction Issues Coalition to present the documentary, which is told through leaders, volunteers, corporate executives and celebrities who share their stories to try to help others. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Eighty percent of all people incarcerated are incarcerated because of addition or to support their addiction,â&#x20AC;? Bardach said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Here in Hamilton County weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had an increase in home invasions and robbery. There are more car accidents now due to people under the influence of narcotics than there are for drunk driving. There are more people dying from overdose every year than there are from traffic fatalities. We have a big epidemic. This whole documentary is actually inside court rooms, inside AA meetings and inside jails talking to people. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quite amazing.â&#x20AC;?

Bardach said a high school student from Fishers will speak about her motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s addiction and how it affected the family. Bardach said law enforcement officials will speak of the growing epidemic of heroin use. There will be a demonstration of Naloxone (Narcan), an antidote that reverses an overdose. It is being used by Hamilton County paramedics. Bardach said it is a prescription that can be obtained though a doctor and can be carried in a purse and medical cabinets. Bardach said her son testified at the Indiana State House to help Sen. Jim Merritt get a bill written in to law called Aaronâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Law. Gov. Mike Pence signed the bill into law on April 17. The law is named for Aaron Sims, a former Lawrence North High School football player who died of an overdose in 2013.

Athletic award â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Mackenzie Harper of Fishers has earned the 2014-15 Division 2 Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement Award. Harper, a member of the Fort Lewis College Skyhawk Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lacrosse team, is majoring in elementary education.

New hires â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Indiana Vein Specialists has added three new staff members who will work from both the Fishers and West Carmel offices. Melissa Etchison, FNP-C, BSN, ADN is a nurse practitioner with extensive vascular experience in a hospital and office setting. Explorer open house â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Fishers Police Department is preparing to launch the Explorer Program Class of 2016 for teens ages 13 to 18 who have an interest in law enforcement. Will I miss this?

Recently, I was in a store with my smallest one in tow. He was a little upset, since he was hungry, and I was REFLECTION frantically looking for what I needed. The layout of the store was a bit confusing and I could not figure out where this special lotion was located: in the baby aisle or the lotion aisle? I initially choose the lotion aisle. Well, I paid dearly for my poor decision making skills. A dear woman in the aisle, sensing my annoyance with this product location, tells me that I will miss these days. Thank goodness for her kindness, as there was a chance his shrieks were going to damage her hearing.

She thinks I will miss this. This. She has lost her mind.

As the week progressed, I decided to reflect upon her lesson for me. Running a household of boys, I told myself there were more things I would miss. You be the Judge and tell me I will miss these things: Mulch in my house. How does one get

bucket loads of mulch in shoes? Do you take your shoes off, scoop it up and put your shoes back on? I finally decided to ask my kid how this comes to pass? His answer: I have a hole in my shoe.

Having to do laundry four days a week. How do small people â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all three of them combined weigh half of what I weigh â&#x20AC;&#x201C; require laundry three times as often? I will never understand the mechanics of this.

Lastly, tell me I will miss buying stock in Kleenex because the investment in the products we have to buy for their runny noses should be paying me dividends. Again, we are talking about tiny humans, but they have outstanding snot production capabilities.

Tell me again, please, I will miss this. Right?

Beginning that Friday, the ENTERTAINMENT city will be celebrating its annual Blues Fest with two nights of Blues entertainment from several, local bands. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This will be the third annual Blues Fest that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great event,â&#x20AC;? Fishers Parks and Recreation Director Tony Elliot said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done it the past couple of years and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got some phenomenal acts that are coming out.â&#x20AC;?

Taking place on Sept. 4 from 7 to 9 p.m., Blues on the Beach will offer an evening of live Blues entertainment on Saxony Beach.

There will be a food truck and Freedom Kayak will be renting paddleboards and kayaks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got a great Blues band called Zach Day and Full Throttle. They are outstanding.â&#x20AC;?

Newcomerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club season arriving 1h 0]]P BZX]]Ta Â&#x201C; anna@youarecurrent.com Residents of Fishers or surrounding areas looking to get more involved in their community have their chance.

INVOLVEMENT The Newcomerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club of Fishers will hold its first meeting of the 2015-16 season on Sept. 10 in the Kirkendall Room at the Delaware Township Government Center, 9090 E. 131st Street.

The meeting is to begin at 6:45 p.m. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The purpose of the Newcomerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club in Fishers is to bring together residents of Fishers and neighboring communities for social relationships and to take an active interest in the community of charitable support,â&#x20AC;? said Roberta Petrovich, an active member of the Newcomerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club.

The first meeting will be an ice cream social and there will be a presentation about the Come to Me food pantry, which the group actively supports. The second meeting will be held in October, and will feature a speaker from the Fishers government. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mostly we help Come to Me food pantry,â&#x20AC;?

Petrovich said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We collect food at different times during the year and at least at one meeting we have a fun activity, last year we played bunko and the monetary results from that were donated to the Come to Me pantry.â&#x20AC;?

Some other activities the Newcomerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club has taken part in include tree plantings at Brooks School Park, buying a brick at a monu-

ment and supporting various groups such as the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shelter in Noblesville.

The club also has many opportunities for individual activities, as there are only seven meetings a year. These activities include breakfast club, lunch bunch, ladies dining group, couples dinner group, book club, euchre and more.

Petrovich said although many members of the club are retired, it is open to all ages.

Membership dues are $20 a year.

In the still of the morningâ&#x20AC;Ś Commentary by Mike Colaw When I was a kid, we used to go often to a lake in South Dakota. This is where I learned to drive a boat, waterski and RELIGION enjoy the still of the early morning. Though I have many great memories of adventure on the lake, I also have amazing memories of deep peace.

As I got a little older I remember taking my fiancĂŠ, Leslie, along with us on vacation. One morning we decided to wake up early and meet at the end of the dock to watch the sunrise together. There is something so beautiful about a still lake early in the morning. The fog resting on the water, the cool gentle morning breeze, the sun peeking over a horizon free from man made structures, the warm sunlight painting the sky and bursting through the clouds. The lake was so tame, no boats in sight. You could take a smooth rock and skip it, and with each touch of the stone against the water the concentric ripples would go on

and on. There was nothing competing with them. It is in these moments that I had the most meaningful conversations. My mind engaged and my heart at peace. I liked Leslie a lot before these types of conversations, but it was in these moments that our relationship reached new depths. Delightfully, deeply satisfying in a non-sensual way.

I believe this is how our relationship with Jesus should work, too. Ideally, it shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be rushed, though that isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always possible. You should find a time and place to drink deep of his love letter we call the Bible. Let his ways and nature speak to you. Pause and think, reply back through journaling and prayer.

Fishers woman sculpts for fest 1h 0]]P BZX]]Ta Â&#x201C; anna@youarecurrent.com Kalpana Naik, a Fishers woman, will take part in an Indian festival come Sept. 17.

Ganesh Chaturthi, a festival EVENT coming to Hindu Temple in Central Indiana on German Church Road, honors the birthday of Lord Ganesh.

Naik will be attending the festival because of her talent in sculpting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I always had interest in different art forms.

I tried and sculpted a small Ganesha for myself. I was able to beat my own expectations.

I then started creating larger ones, and giving it to local associations, stores and even to the temple. People just loved it,â&#x20AC;? Naik said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have been sculpting now for over five years now.

The largest Ganesha I have made is over four feet.â&#x20AC;?

Naik has experience in multiple art forms, and she is a fashion designer and has attending fashion shows in Indianapolis and Chicago.

Some of her paintings are also displayed in local galleries.

A big part about the Ganesh festival is being eco-friendly. Naik explained that Ganesha idols are sold in stores and they do not dissolve in water, but pollute it instead.

Naik said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I use my bare hands to sculpt, paint and decorate the Ganesha. When it is immersed in water it will dissolve. Above all with my Ganesha you are serving mother earth by not polluting it.â&#x20AC;?

The organization is similar to foster care, with the main difference being that it is voluntary on both sides. The parents call Safe Families in search of help and the families who take in the children donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t receive any compensation.

Safe Families for Children, a self-funded volunteer based organization aimed at keeping families intact and prevent child neglect and abuse, will be holding a FUNDRAISER gala at the Oak Hill Mansion, 5801 E. 116th St., Carmel on Sept. 11.

The organization has been in the Indianapolis metropolitan area since 2008. The gala will be the big event of the year, with last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gala raising $80,000 for the organization. Organization assistant director Beth Kinney said she hopes to meet and exceed that goal this year.

There will be a live auction, a silent auction and a dinner all starting at 6:30 p.m. Kinney said some of the items in the auction include Disney tickets, a week rental condo in Florida and ski resort rentals.

The gala helps raise money to help struggling families in the area who may need to find a spot for their kids while they get back on their feet. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We provide early intervention services if a parent is struggling and having a hard time,â&#x20AC;?

Kinney said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The parent can call us and we will place the children into a temporary host home, we have a network of homes across the city.â&#x20AC;?

Kinney said many of the participants are single mothers looking for help with getting back on their feet, but she said they also take in kids due to substance abuse, incarceration

Commentary by Larry Lannan The proposed Hamilton County public safety training facility took two steps back and one small step forward Aug. 5, and no one knows where it all goes from here.

OPINION The county council voted 4-3 to reject spending $3 million for construction of the project, then voted later in the evening to approve $568,000 which pays for constructing a fire burn tower only.

Based on the news accounts I have read, the four council members against the $3 million proposal had two concerns. They believe the county has no statutory requirement to fund fire protection activities, as townships, towns and cities have. There were also concerns expressed that the cities involved should contribute more money to the endeavor.

Fishers, Carmel, Westfield and Noblesville each pledged $40,000 toward operating expenses for the training center. It appears the council majority wants more funding from the cities.

The argument that the county has no legal

requirement to fund a public safety training facility is not persuasive to me. The county spends money in plenty of areas where there is no statutory requirement to do so. In my view, the council members should judge the project on its merits, not whether the law requires it.

The council does have a special duty to oversee how the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s money is spent. Counties in Indiana have special legal responsibilities when it comes to paying for bridges.

Public safety, as I see it, is a responsibility of government, particularly local government entities from the county on down. Police and fire protection issues should not be decided based on political questions. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time all levels of government come together and find a way to fund a public safety training facility in Hamilton County.

August 24 HSE School Board recap

This meeting’s Snapshot of Success honored Hamilton Southeastern Elementary schools in their efforts to raise money for the American Heart Association. Since HSE schools have been involved with the American Heart Association they have raised over $1 million in funds, which equates to more than 20,000 lives saved. Total amounts raised in 2015 were $134,986.66. The top five schools each had representatives at the school board meeting to be honored.

Why it matters: Each year, AHA provides free resources to Physical Education teachers and programs, promoting health lifestyles for students and families. Because cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, remain the leading cause of death in Indiana. AHA also partners with schools to host fundraising/awareness events like Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart.

A second read of the policy in response to a new law regarding non-resident employees to enroll their students into the school they are employed with. The first reading had minor changes in legal terminology and grammar. The board unanimously approved the policy.

Why it matters: Recently the board had voted down the decision to move on with the proposed referendum for the school budget formula. The board decided it would like more feedback from the community before proposing the referendum, which could go into the May 2016 election ballot.

The board approved the ratification of a new contract for HSE teachers. The board unanimously approved the new contract.

Jake Laird golf outing As friends gathered to check in for the golf outing, I was touched by the many awards and medals on display for Jake Laird. His memory lives on through the Jake Laird Fund. (Photos by Amy Pauszek) “Where’s Amy?” … I recently attended the 12th annual Jake Laird Golf Outing on Aug. 21.

Jake had been an IMPD officer for four years when he was shot and killed in the line of duty. Following the loss of their son, Mike and Debbie Laird decided to create something positive and formed a non-profit agency. The Jake Laird Fund is dedicated to providing financial support for police officers and firefighters injured in the line of duty who are experiencing financial hardships. In addition the nonprofit provides funding for special projects and equipment for police and fire agencies. The Jake Laird Fund has donated approximately $400,000 to help others in need throughout Indiana. Each year the Laird family and friends host a golf outing to celebrate Jake’s life. They thought the idea would last a couple of years after their son’s tragic death but they are still amazed at the amount of support they receive each year. The event also included Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear and U.S. Rep. Susan Brooks (R-Ind.). I attend and experience so many wonderful things for my column, but it is the meaningful events like this that open our hearts to appreciate life and the ones around us. Bruce McNabb of Noblesville is patriarch of his family owned training, boarding and breeding facility, First Friend K9 in Fishers.

His demeanor is a mixture of disciplinarian, educator, drill sergeant and dog whisperer. Like a tireless triathlete, he marches around for an hour, drenched in sweat, in a room loaded with 25 breeds of dogs and 25 breeds of owners.

He is described by his human students â&#x20AC;&#x201C; some who drive more than an hour to be there â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as a balance of passion and compassion, enthusiasm and empowerment, who is also remarkably patient.

McNabbâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s motto is, â&#x20AC;&#x153;avoid avoidance.â&#x20AC;?

For Spartacus, there is no avoiding other dogs. The current trend of apartments and condos allowing residents to own canines combined with the housing increase in Hamilton Co., has resulted in a higher pet-to-people ratio.

McNabb said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Picking out a student dog that may not do well, keeps me honest; it reminds me of how hard training can be. It also helps the handler mentally and emotionally, when I have to repeat the demonstration over and over.â&#x20AC;?

The transformation from chaos to calm happens quickly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was intimidated at first with so many dogs, the responsibility and the work. After the first four weeks, that turned into self-confidence,â&#x20AC;? At 25? Embrace failure Commentary by CJ McClanahan Recently, a bright young person asked me a great question – “What advice would you give yourself at 25?”

ADVICE After a short pause, I answered – “Fail faster and a lot more.”

Like many young people, I was obsessed with achievement, earning more money and moving up the corporate “ladder”. As a result, I woke up every day and carefully followed a path that was heavily focused on avoiding risk.

This approach led to a conservative and steady rise in my career. At 33, I had never been fired, received virtually zero negative reviews and had yet to experience any significant failure.

Unfortunately, I had come to the realization that I didn’t enjoy my job and had no idea where my career should go next. Worse, I had ridden a wave a constant success and was nervous about taking any chances.

I did it anyways and at 33, quit my job, used our savings and started my own firm.

During the first 90 days, I made more mistakes than I had in 33 years. Since then, I have

made bad hires, taken on the wrong clients, lost tons of money on bad decisions and even dropped an “F” bomb in front of a crowd of hundreds of insurance agents (I doubt I will be invited back).

Every one of these mistakes was painful, but I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.

The simple truth is that any meaningful success or breakthrough in your life – personal or professional – absolutely must be preceded by failure. Minor mistakes only lead to minor improvements.

I am not suggesting that everyone quit their job and follow their dream to open a brewery.

However, I do recommend that if it has been a while since you’ve felt the sting of a bad choice, you’re probably not trying hard enough and missing out on a great opportunity to improve.

Conner Prairie hires new chief development officer news@currentinfishers.com The Conner Prairie Interactive History Park named a new chief development officer last month. On Aug. 17, the museum announced that fundraising professional OCCUPATION Karrie Zuccarello will step into the role.

Zuccarello comes from her role as Director of Development for the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs. During her time as director she helped manage SPEA’s major gift program, corporate and foundation relations, annuals funds and stewardship.

Opening on Sept. 1, the Conner Prairie Apple Store celebrates 30 years here in Fishers. In honor of this significant milestone, a special treat will be offered to customers: a limited edition pearlescent caramel apple. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The traditional gift for a 30-year anniversary is the pearl so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve found a way to create a special hand-dipped pearlescent caramel apple this season,â&#x20AC;? Marcilynn Keys, president of the Conner Prairie Alliance volunteer group that operates the store, said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re sure it will be a hit.â&#x20AC;?

The cool side of the pillow Commentary by Terry Anker It has been a sleepless night â&#x20AC;&#x201C; tossing and turning as if the dilemmaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s resolution could be found on the cool side of the pillow. What is keeping that much needed (and desired) sweet, deep sleep out of reach? Yes, there is much to do. However, there was much to do yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that one â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and yet each delivered a perfect and restful slumber. The mind wonders from one topic to the next without finding a satisfactory place to rest. Thoughts emerge and recede never fully gaining the benefit of consideration.

Soon, dawn is upon us. The sounds of the night are giving way to the industrious early birds beckoning first light. Focus is emerging from unresolved problems dwindling to a few. The digital clock across the room is advancing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at first by the minute, then in groups of ten or so at a time. What will the day bring? Will the resources and

ability to achieve the objective be attained?

If at all, can the problem find a solution?

And if it cannot, does it really matter?

Soon, the house will come to life. The dog will awaken, stretch awkwardly, and nudge me to let him outside. Alarms will sound and school busses will arrive. If only there was time for a second cup of coffee. Just take it along for the drive to the office. On the radio, the weather forecaster predicts the climate in clichĂŠd but comfortable prose. Did the extra hour this morning of silent thought prepare for the challenges ahead or would the benefit have been greater from a bit more REM? At this point, the machinery of life has begun again and we come to it prepared as we are. Happily, another chance for sleep arrives with nightfall.

My husband Doo and I began participating in triathlons last year. We were looking for something new to whip us into shape that wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t require knee replaceHUMOR ment surgery any time soon.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve completed three sprints thus far, and are gunning for an Olympic length tri over Labor Day. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in with the Lord, please send up prayers this Sunday!

I bring this challenge to your attention because in my quest to beat Doo, my formercollegiate-athlete brother-in-law and every middle-aged female on the planet, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve found that in addition to actually training, looking the part is equally important. To that end, I stepped up my game this summer by purchasing not only an honest-to-goodness road bike (the hybrid model I used in my first race was so slow I should have just attached a wicker basket and enjoyed a nice ride to market), but also real adult goggles (that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fog over after 2.3 seconds and wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be stripped away for the second half of the swim) and a legit cycling outfit (on sale and straight from China). For me at least, appearing to be a capable, competitive athlete really does provide a boost in confidence, and consequently, in my performance.

Plus, if you look like the winners, then even if a pregnant woman pushing a jogging stroller blows past you in the run, you can still pretend it never happened as you roam the post-race celebration, free brew in hand.

The problem arises when people assume you know more than you actually do.

Case in point, I recently fell off my bike and dropped the chain on a very busy riding trail.

I received a few offers of help, but no one actually stopped. I think I looked too dang good! They probably thought I was sprawled in the weeds on purpose, perhaps practicing a therapeutic yoga move. And then I crashed again, less than 10 feet away! This time?

Chirp.

Alas, though Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done a decent job of exuding the serious triathlete vibe, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really just a gal trying to stay fit without bionics.

The young man at the door was selling a new cable service. As a creature of habit, I am not inclined to change anything unless something much better comes along â&#x20AC;Ś and I say that proudly after 35 years of marriage.

The time was 7:03 p.m. Keegan began by trying to convince me of the benefits of a faster Internet connection. â&#x20AC;&#x153;How long does it take you to get on the Internet now?â&#x20AC;? he asked. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Well, I start upstairs with a beverage, then, with this pesky knee of mine, it takes me a while to get down the stairs to the computer.

By the time I find my glasses, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking at eight to 10 minutes.â&#x20AC;?Â

Keegan was on his cell phone, on hold during our entire conversation, trying to get approval from his supervisor for the discount package he presented to me. He explained the advantages of this offer, which meant instead of 240 shows available every hour, we could get 270 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; giving us an extra 30 we also had no time to watch. The deal-maker was that he was going to provide us with four DVRs, the devices that record TV programs for future viewing. We only have three TVs, so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll just stick one next to the toilet in the half bath.

I bet it will creep out our guests at our next dinner party.

It was now 10:05 p.m. The phone rang and it was yet another cable service wanting to talk about their new promotion, which sounded pretty good, too. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Let me think about that,â&#x20AC;? I said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Can I put you on hold for a moment?â&#x20AC;?

Every year, we must think food safety

By Joe Drozda and Bob Bley Not wanting to sound like a broken record, but every year we need to discuss food safety because each season people are either new to tailgating or others simply forget to be careful. You can be sure that from each game some tailgater will go home to be awakened in the night by all the bad symptoms of food poisoning.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very easy to avoid problems by following our simple SAFE rules. Â&#x201C; Safe Start - buy fresh USDA certified beef, pork, or poultry. Â&#x201C; Safe Prep - cook all hot foods thoroughly (beef and pork: 160 degrees; and poultry parts: 170). Keep hands and cooking/ serving items clean. Â&#x201C; Safe Storage - keep cold foods cold at least at 40 degrees. Use two coolers: one for beverages (opened frequently) and the other for foods that must be kept cold before and after serving.

Since this early part of the season is a time for lighter cold foods, here is a recipe that

should please your guests but not fill them up.

Black Bean Salad Chipotle Monterey Jack Chicken Sausage Ingredients: 1 package JOHNSONVILLEÂŽ Cajun Chicken Sausage or Johnsonville Chipotle, Monterey Jack Cheese Chicken Sausage, sliced into coins, 1 red bell pepper, diced, 1 green bell pepper, diced, 1 green bell pepper, diced, 1 yellow bell pepper, diced, 1/2 cup red onion, diced, 1 can (15 ounces) corn, drained, 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained, 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped, 1/4 cup olive oil, 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar, 1 lime, juiced, Salt and pepper to taste Directions: In a large bowl, combine peppers, onion, corn, black beans, sausage and cilantro. In a small bowl, whisk olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. Pour dressing over other ingredients and toss well. Serve with tortilla chips.

Total Time: Approx. 40 mins Original recipe makes 20 servings Ingredients: 1/2 cup butter-flavored popcorn oil (such as Orville Redenbacher), 1 (1 ounce) package ranch dressing mix (such as Hidden Valley Ranch), 1 tablespoon dried dill weed, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon lemon pepper, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 6 cups mini pretzels, 3 (6 ounce) packages bite-size Cheddar cheese fish crackers Directions: Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C). Stir the popcorn oil, ranch dressing mix, dill weed, garlic powder, lemon pepper, and cayenne pepper in a large bowl; add the pretzels and fish crackers and stir to coat evenly. Parrish and Wortman are the two parts of the band The Honey Dewdrops. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are singer-songwriters who love a lot of old American music, old country music and old bluegrass styles,â&#x20AC;? Parrish said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an old, familiar sound to (our music) coming from traditional American influences but written from our

Helping your child with loss Commentary by Sean Keller, MD Coping with the loss of a family member or friend is difficult for anyone â&#x20AC;&#x201C; especially children and adolescents. For parents tryFAMILY ing to help their children deal with death, the situation becomes even more challenging when the parents themselves are also grieving the loss. Here are some strategies for helping your child cope: Â&#x201C; Let your child know that grieving is OK. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be afraid to let your child see you cry or show emotion, and be sure to let her know that grieving is acceptable. Â&#x201C; Answer questions honestly. Children may have questions about death and dying.

Blueprint for Improvement: Updating your ’90s kitchen BEFORE

Commentary by Larry Greene Background Info: This home is located in the Avian Glen Subdivision in Carmel. It was built in 1994 and the kitchen was original to the home. The homeowners have lived there for eight years and were ready for an update.

Before Problems: The cabinets were old thermafoil cabinets that were beginning to peel. The island was too small for the space and countertop would often move in place.

The space was poorly utilized and did not meet the needs of the family.

AFTER

After Solutions: The goal was to achieve a fully functional and beautiful kitchen for a busy family.

1. A large prep island was installed to create room for additional seating.

2. The built-in desk and pantry closet were eliminated to provide room for a more functional cabinet pantry with roll-out drawers. This also provided room for additional countertop space.

3. Pull out wire baskets were installed providing the perfect storage solution for produce.

4. Under cabinet lighting and two large pen-

dant lights were installed to brighten up the space.

5. Granite countertops replaced the outdated and decrepit laminate tops. Solid, black granite with a matte finish was used for the perimeter and lighter granite with ample movement was installed on the island.

6. Personalized city tile backsplash was installed allowing the clients to select tile of the cities where they previously lived.

7. Hardwood flooring was installed throughout the first level creating a continuous flow between the kitchen and the rest of the home.

8. New ceramic tile was installed in the adjacent laundry room and half bathroom completing the flow and new look of the home with the kitchen.

9. The traditional kitchen was energized by adding industrial touches in the backsplash, island seating, and lighting.

Deir el-Medinaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tomb builders Commentary by Don Knebel

Deir el-Medina is the name given to the ruins of an ancient Egyptian village that housed workers building tombs in the TRAVEL Valley of the Kings. Records from the site reveal an ancient economic development strategy.

Contrary to popular beliefs, Egyptian tombs, including the Great Pyramids, were not built by slaves but by workers employed by the government. When Egyptians began entombing pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings, near Luxor, they built a town about two miles away for the tomb builders and their families. The town, originally named The Place of the Truth, was founded in about 1500 B.C. and lasted until interment in the Valley of the Kings ended about 400 years later. At its peak, the town included more than 100 four or five-room stone houses.

At least some of the workers and their wives were literate. Letters written on ostraca and papyrus indicate the work schedule consisted of eight days on and two days off. Workers were given additional days off for festivals and

when they were ill or, on at least one occasion, drunk. During their time off, the workers constructed chapels and tombs for themselves and their families. The government provided the houses, medical care and laundry services.

Wages consisted of food, firewood and other supplies the workers needed, with occasional bonuses of items for religious celebrations and materials for their eventual mummification. The painters, stone masons, carpenters and sculptors received about three times the wages of a field hand. When the skilled workers were dissatisfied with their wages and benefits under Pharaoh Ramses III, they went on strike until their demands were satisfied.

Deir el-Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, includes some of the most finely decorated tombs in Egypt. It also provides an example of a government creating middle class jobs 3,500 years ago.
