Business people from Fishers and the Indianapolis metropolitan area gathered at the Forum Conference Center on Wednesday for the monthly Fishers Chamber of Commerce Luncheon.

The keynote speaker of the luncheon was local TV news icon Mike Ahern, who spoke about the Indiana Historical Society as well as his experiences during his years in the news industry.

Owens makes St. Thomas Dean’s List – Congratulations to Fishers resident Coady Owens for making the University of St. Thomas Dean’s List. Owens was one of approximately 2,000 undergraduate students of the school’s 10,000 to receive the honor this past spring semester. St. Thomas is a Catholic, independent, liberal arts university.

Health officials take safety measures against West Nile editorial@youarecurrent.com State health officials reported the first West Nile virus related death this year last Wednesday. The victim was a resident of Vanderburgh County.

A total of seven cases in Fulton, Hamilton, Jackson, Monroe, Marion and Vanderburgh counties have been reported this year so far. According to a press release from the Indiana State Department of Health, the majority of people who get infected are those spending time around or outside of the home, in their gardens, mowing the lawn, or sitting on the porch.

“Because this virus is carried and transmitted by mosquitoes, we are all susceptible to it,” said State Health Commissioner Gregory Larkin, M.D., in the press release. “The tragic death we’ve recently experienced serves as a reminder

of just how important it is to take steps to protect ourselves from mosquitoes, both indoors and outdoors.”

The Department of Health suggests to avoid places were mosquitoes are biting, and to utilize repellents containing DEET, picaradin or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Also, they suggest installing or repairing window screens and wearing pants and long sleeves whenever possible.

To reduce potential mosquito breeding grounds, they say to get rid of containers that can hold water, repair failed septic systems, drill holes in the bottoms of recycling containers that remain outside, keep the grass short and the shrubs trimmed, clean out clogged gutters, replace the water in pet bowls frequently, flush ornamental fountains and birdbaths frequently, and aerate ornamental pools or stock them with predatory fish.

County commissioners and fired chiefs lift burn ban – As of last Tuesday, the fire ban in Hamilton County was lifted. The officials in charge, Hamilton County commissioners and individual fire chiefs, met and agreed “that conditions have improved enough to cancel the ban,” according to a statement on fishers.in.us.

Residents and businesses can now use recreational fires and personal fireworks, within the realm of safety, state laws and local ordinances. Professional fireworks displays may reschedule on a case by case basis with the approval of the local fire chief.

Lt. Gov. Skillman presents Fishers veteran with volunteerism award – Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman and Division of Aging Director Faith Laird presented Humbert Lopes, an Air Force veteran of WWII and the Korean War, with the Golden Hoosier Award for his work in volunteerism.

Lopes is the director of the Hamilton County Money Management Program, and has been a member of the Indiana Commission on Aging since the 1990’s, according to a press release. “Our Golden Hoosiers provide inspiration to citizens all over Indiana,” Lt. Governor Skillman said. “From our smallest towns to our biggest cities, Indiana is a better place for our children and grandchildren because of their countless hours of service.” “Simple words of gratitude don’t begin to convey the depth of appreciation the Division of Aging has for the selfless generosity of our Golden Hoosiers,” Laird said.

Hotel occupancy percentages and daily rates increase – The occupancy percentages and daily rates for hotels in Hamilton County have increased in the past year according to research by STR Global/Smith Travel. This year’s occupancy percentage is more than 11 percent higher than that of the entire state, sitting at 63 percent, the Hamilton County Convention and Visitors Bureau said in a press release.

Fall Creek Township meeting tonight – The Fall Creek Township board members and trustee are holding a meeting tonight at the township building on 116th Street and Brooks School Road to discuss the upcoming town versus city referendum. It is open to the public and begins at 6:30 p.m.

Editor’s Note: As a result of a scheduling error, Current in Fishers was not present for the Aug. 6 Fishers Town Council meeting. The proceedings were viewed from a recording of the meeting found at fishers.in.us.

What happened: A contract for unwanted animal services with the Humane Society for Hamilton County was approved for 2013 What it means: In the past, the Town of Fishers contracted with Hamilton County “for the administration of unwanted animals in Fishers,” according to a council action form. The county auditor would bill for each animal, but used the Humane Society for the actual services. Starting this year, the county is no longer a part of the system. Fishers entered into an agreement to with the Humane Society for $78,525.32 – a $7,594 decrease from last year. The money will come out of the Police Department Budget or general fund.

What happened: Resolution R080612 was approved What it means: The resolution is a funds transfer. The general fund and the sewer fund saw transfers for a large format scanner ($6,645), “to cover short budgeting in part time salary” ($1,268), “to cover short budgeting for emergency repairs” ($88,600) and “to pay for Hamilton East Library Build Out Project” ($225,000), according to the resolution form.

What happened: Ordinance Ord07162 had a second reading What it means: The ordinance means to govern pawnshops, secondhand dealers, metal recycling entities and secondhand metal dealers, including “cash for gold” operations. The ordinance would require various forms of documentation on items bought by the stores and the person selling the items – including a fingerprint. Several local business owners showed up to the meeting to speak their minds. Clothing stores and used sports equipment stores would fall under this ordinance, as well as numismatist businesses. The business owners cited issues involving the value of items that require documentation ($25), whether the business should fall under the ordinance, how frequently those items come through the stores, the invasiveness of fingerprinting and the difficulty in holding items for the seven days required by the ordinance. The council deliberated with the business owners and Detective Dave Baker, who was taking questions on the ordinance. The councilors talked about the intricacies of the plan. It will return for a third reading and then be voted upon.

COMMUNITY Spotlight Town of Fishers employees give back to community

By Dan Domsic • dan@youarecurrent.com Town of Fishers staff members continue to help the community with a volunteer group that spans multiple departments.

The G.I.V.E. Committee – Generosity Involvement and Volunteerism by Employees – was established in 2007, and five years later, still provides care for the community.

It all started when staff members got together to lend a hand during Hurricane Katrina and the tornados that hit Evansville.

“After those events, we thought it would be nice if we had an organization that was prepared or that already met that could do something in case an emergency situation came up,” Aimee Ector, human resources assistant, said, “and in the mean time, annually we just do different events.”

Most recently, the group raised $1,300 for the Hoosier Burn Camp by running an inflatable play area at the Fishers Freedom Festival.

G.I.V.E. also collaborated with Parks and Recreation to collect items during the Fishers Summer Concert Series for the camp.

After raising $2,500 for Janus Developmental Services last year, the Town of Fishers developed a working relationship with the organization – giving Janus consumers and the town more opportunities that are beneficial to both parties, according to Maura Leon-Barber, director of communications and G.I.V.E. committee member.

In addition to the group’s work with Janus, G.I.V.E. helped raise money for a Fishers family with two daughters enduring Friederich’s Ataxia, a neuromuscular disease, who needed to make their home wheel chair accessible, and in the winter months, the committee is hosting a toy drive for the Good Samaritan Network.

“This year we’re trying to expand our reach a little to get more of the citizens involved,” Ector said.

“Hopefully through our partnership with the chamber and other organizations through some of their holiday events, we can ask the citizens to be bringing in toys to the tree lighting or cookies with Santa, those different kind of events.”

The group meets during business hours, but many of the activities it participates in are after hours.

Ector said, “I think it’s a testament to town council and our leadership that they support this kind of organization within the town.”

Currently, there are twelve members of the committee: Tony Elliot, administration department; Leon-Barber, communications department; Aaron head, development department; Samantha Gillespie and Ron Stolz, fire department; Aimee Ector, Cici Hendrix and Ethan Lee, human resources department; Amber Mink, parks and recreation department; John Findlay, permitting and inspections department; and Tim Burbich, public works department.

Road projects continue, streets to see repaving

By Dan Domsic • dan@youarecurrent.com Prepare yourself for the roads and understand where the Town of Fishers is with the several ongoing projects all over town. Current in Fishers sat down with Town of Fishers Director of Engineering Jeff Hill to get his assess-

ment of construction on the thoroughfares.

Hill said as of Thursday, all projects are on or under budget. Some projects, such as the Allisonville Road project, saw increases in cost for individual aspects, while others such as a the 135th Place project have seen price reductions.

Project: Allisonville and 96th Street “Michigan Left” Status: Even though rain and problems with utilities occurred, the contractor continues to make progress, according to Hill. The town is working with the contractor to keep businesses happy with driveways in the area. He said the project is now entering the fourth phase of maintenance of traffic, meaning commuters can see increased progress now that the storm sewer and utilities are taken care of. More concrete pavement is coming up. The project saw a $40,000 increase for materials.

Project: 135th Place intersection Status: The project was supposed to start a week prior to press time. However, Hill worked with INDOT to eliminate a phase of construction on the project involving Ind. 37. The northbound and southbound lanes on Ind. 37 will be shifted towards the middle in order to build a right turn lane and improved shoulder. The modification to the project saves time, night work and approximately $75,000, according to Hill. He also said excavation for the connector road has started and will continue for more than 90 days.

Project: 126th Street Projects Status: Hill had no specific updates on the road improvements. Work continues on and is scheduled to be completed in November, but the intersection at Cumberland Road is open.

Project: Fall Creek and Brooks School Road roundabout Status: Hill said the town is still in dispute for eminent domain with a land owner in the construction area.

Project: Ongoing resurfacing work Status: Engineering has identified several roads due for resurfacing. Those roads are Shadowlawn Drive, Ford Drive, Ford Circle, Fishers Pointe Boulevard and a piece of the 126th Street and Allisonville Road intersection.

Bids open for the projects at the end of the month, and the projects should be finished by November.

Indiana American Water supports water conservation order

During this summer’s drought, the water conservation orders asked for by Citizen’s Water in Fishers were also supported by Indiana American Water – a utility that has approximately 1,500 customers in Fishers.

Joe Loughmiller, external affairs manager for the company, said Fishers residents who are also customers of IAW should follow town ordinances that curb water usage.

Citizen’s Water asked for mandatory water restrictions at the end of July, but IAW had policies that allowed for customers to water their lawns every other day but not to water on weekends.

Town Manager Scott Fadness said in an interview last week that the majority of watering complaints resulted from citizens calling in and reporting their neighbors, and officials believed the whole community should take part in the ordinance.

“For us to go out and check to see who’s got which water, we felt it would have been easier from a compliance standpoint,” he said.

Fadness said the order was talked about on a Town Council level.

“We really feel like water resources are shared

by all of us, whether Fishers, Carmel, Noblesville, Indiana American Water, Citizens Water – whoever it might be – and if we were facing a drought and if things were to continue at the pace they were going, at some point we’re all sharing the same resources,” he said.

“We thought we were being good stewards of the resource.”

Loughmiller said IAW draws from both surface and ground sources, including aquifers located along the White River, but could not go into further detail.

Don Kirk, a Fishers resident and IAW customer, said he doesn’t believe parched lawns will recover from the drought and conservation order.

Before recent rains hit, Kirk spent about 20 minutes every other day watering flowers out by the sidewalk at the front entrance of his subdivision.

“I can see areas that the sod is just burned up,” he said. “It doesn’t really exist anymore.”

Fadness said the Town of Fishers staff is taking Citizen Water’s lead, and the recent rains are not enough to end the order.

WHO IS THE BEST CANDIDATE FOR DEBT SETTLEMENT? A small business or individual with $30,000 or more of unsecured debt, who has a 401K plan, an inheritance, or a lump sum distribution; as approximately half of debt amount must be set aside in escrow to settle debt when agreement is reached with the creditor.

WHY DO I NEED AN ATTORNEY? WHY CAN’T I DO IT MYSELF? Most of the time creditors will not negotiate with individuals, or debt settlement companies. They will ask an attorney for a “power of attorney”. An attorney locks in the terms, so that the creditor cannot change them and try to collect more interest or fees later. An attorney can also protect you in the event of a lawsuit occurring while negotiations are ongoing.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS? There is a risk of a lawsuit occurring before the debt is settled, which is usually avoided by using a LOCAL attorney. Also one’s credit score could decline while negotiations are taking place.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SETTLE ALL THE DEBT? Most of the time a creditor will not begin negotiating until debt is 6 months past due. Therefore debt settlement is usually completed as soon as terms are reasonable.

The collaborative effort by the county parks is nothing new. The various parks officials have formed an organization, the Hamilton Parks Association, to discuss trends and share ideas.

“It’s unique because we’re the envy of the state,” Jones said. “We already have a good working relationship.”

“We are excited to have this opportunity and hope to make new friends along the way,” the Blazier team said in an email to Current. “We also feel blessed to be able to do this and live in an area where events like this are available.”

For the inaugural event, organizers are thrilled with the public response.

Mike Hoffmeister of Fishers Parks and Recreation said the participating teams come from all parts of Hamilton County, including a team from Greenfield and one from Kentucky.

“We’ve had a huge response and it filled up right away. We have 10 teams on the waiting list. If we expand to 50 or 60 teams next year, we’ll probably fill it,” he explained. “Overall, we’ve had a great response.

We take pride being here in Hamilton County and hosting such a big event to display all the parks.”

Opinion New center CEO working for you

Back to school ’12 It is our position that just as students are getting back into the routines that are associated with the school year, those who have moved on from going to school must do the same. First off, school zones are back in effect. While they are a pain, they’re there for a reason and can help save lives. Even if there doesn’t appear to be anyone remotely close to the road, please continue to follow the posted speed limit. Not doing so is irresponsible (and against the law.)

Second, school buses will be back out on the streets. While it is another hassle for these on the rush to get to their destination, it’s important to be watchful and stop when the stop arm on the bus is displayed. Bus drivers have enough to deal with without other drivers being a major concern.

Gone are the warm (maybe too warm) summer mornings where the kids could sleep during the morning traffic rush. Now, they’re going to be right there in the middle of it with everyone else. We need to remind ourselves some of the finer points of driving during the school year.

There are many ways to measure success.

But chief among them is to know that we are tops on a list where it is good to be tops and near the bottom, where the opposite standard applies. This past week, we Hoosiers moved in the opposite direction on both measures. We ballooned on lists that measure our obesity per capita compared to fellow states. And, we tumbled on lists that quantify personal activity in contrast to citizens in other locales. It seems clear that the two are related, but some would rather not consider the connection.

In my own fight against age and a slowing metabolism, it pains me to admit that it is the dressing on my salad that expands my waistline and not the salad itself. But the dressing is so very tasty; it can’t be hiding fat and calories behind its silky goodness. And, water is a great thirst quencher, but there is something about that curvy bottle and red label that makes one need an afternoon soda – or two – or three.

Yet self-deception alone doesn’t account for our burgeoning selves. We routinely drive around the lot looking for the closest space.

How can walking be better than driving? And, the escalator is just plain fun to ride. At day’s end, we relax with television – not a long walk.

And too often, restaurants measure by the pounds served not the quality of provision.

A quick survey of local dining establishments shows numerous salads exceeding in one portion the allowable healthy dietary intake for an adult. The super-sized burgers, fries and other dietary staples can easily make a single meal surpass by many times the 24 hour maximums allowed for a healthy existance. Is being a member of the Clean Plate Club killing us?

Let’s have dinner and discuss.

By all accounts, the future of the direction of arts and entertainment for our region, with regard to the Center for the Performing Arts, is in good hands. Tania Castroverde Moskalenko is at the helm of the organization and campus as its new chief executive officer.

She began her job Aug. 13, taking over for interim CEO Frank Basile, who did a stellar job.

We had an opportunity to chat up her and her husband, Alexi, at a recent private gathering. And let us tell you… She is one confident woman with a track record of success. We believe she will add to that here and for all the right reasons that will benefit Central Indiana residents for years to come.

Coming from Germantown, Tennessee (in suburban Nashville), as the ranking officer of its performing arts center, she turned around a fiscally-challenged facility, elevated the quality of performing acts, and got nose-deep in fundraising. She told us last week that fundraising here is one of her primary objectives.

She is so genuine, so embracing of the region and its hospitality thus far, and she clearly is excited and grateful for the opportunity before her. So, the question becomes: When will she begin to put her own stamp on the Center? We assume that’s going to come after she is able to locate the conference room.

Once she gets settled, arts patrons will see subtle – and maybe not-so-subtle – changes, all aimed at enhancing the experience, to speak nothing of boosting education opportunities through the Center and the Michael Feinstein Initiative. It should prove truly enjoyable to watch it all unfold, and we wish her success in her endeavors.

Camp fires, stars and fall nights Commentary by Dan Domsic

It’s done. It’s over. The outdoor burn ban is lifted.

Patriots can light off fireworks in accordance with state laws and local ordinances, and pyromaniacs finally have an outlet.

According to an announcement on the Town of Fishers web site, professional displays may even start cropping up, as Fire and Emergency Services Chief Steve Orusa approves them, which are “handled on a case by case basis.”

Probably the best aspect of the burn ban being lifted is that it came just in time for fall. As the weather hopefully cools down and gives way to chilly breezes, the obvious thing to do is prepare for bonfires in the backyard.

There’s something special about having a bonfire, and it doesn’t take much work. A little bit of firewood can go a long way if you’re safe and keep it manageable. Unless you have a source of firewood for free, bundles can be purchased at a fair price at local grocery stores and gas stations.

And of course, make sure there’s a safe way to put the fire out.

Add to the fun and have snacks at the ready.

Messy smores and hot chocolate are a good call, if time allows.

Those ingredients add up to one fun experience, and a nice change of pace from the typical time sinks like TV and movies – although I am known to enjoy a good film.

Probably the best part about it, unlike mov-

ies and TV shows, is that when you sit around a fire, you get to talk to the friends and family that make life enjoyable. One tilt of the neck, and you can see the stars span across the sky.

All of a sudden, the worries and irritants of everyday life drift away and nothing is left but a toasty fire, hopefully a tasty snack and, most importantly, the company of good friends.

One of those people Commnetary by Danielle Wilson Heaven help me, I’m becoming one of those people. You know the kind− women who obnoxiously extol the virtues of their children to anyone with ears: “My Richard is so wonderful!

Straight A’s again and of course, captain of the varsity basketball team. As a freshman! Well, it’s no surprise really; he did walk at 4 months and was reading Dostoyevsky by 3.” Gag. As a direct result of listening to this annoying jibberjabber, I’ve made a conscientious effort to dwell on the shortcomings of my family rather than their achievements whenever I’m with family or neighbors – body odor, a trip to the principal’s office, maybe a snaggle tooth or two − all better conversation pieces than their latest accomplishment or surpassed milestone. Even my annual holiday letter only briefly touches on their outstanding-ness because let’s face it, perfection is Boring with a capital B. And people with their pets are even worse.

Like I give a rat’s tail about your precious Mister Pickleknuckle and how his antics in your lavender-scented bubble bath almost cost him Best in Show. First of all, who has time for a bath? And secondly, DOGS ARE NOT PEOPLE. But the other day, I found myself waxing poetically about our cat, of all things! Granted, I came nowhere close to the aforementioned dog owners who I think might actually be saving for

pet college (in case their pedigree scholarship falls through), but still, I was deplorable.

“Ginger is the best! She lets us know when she’s hungry or needs new litter; she meows when she wants to go outside; and she absolutely loves to be around people. Did you know she can open doors? Seriously! You should see how she hurls her body against a swing handle! Truly amazing!

Blah blah blah … and even sounded the alarm when little Timmy fell down the well!”

The person I was talking to wasn’t even looking at me anymore, and yet I continued to bombard her with the details of an animal she couldn't have cared less about. Did I inquire about her pets? Her children? Nope. I just went right on flappin’ my gums like I was the most important person on Earth and she surely had nothing better to do than to hear about my life with a tabby. Ugh! What is happening to me?

No worries. I discovered a giant pile of Ginger poo in the carpeted family room earlier this morning, before I’d had my ritual coffee and after I’d yelled at my 11-year-old to lower the volume on the stupid Xbox. Had he been playing all night?

Whew! I’m back to my normal real self. Peace out.

Kenny Loggins turns Palladium into room of rowdy-rockers

By Zach Dunkin • editorial@youarecurrent.com It’s a good bet most of the crowd packing the Palladium on Aug. 1 to hear pop-rocker Kenny Loggins stroll through hits from yesterday had no idea they would be walking into a: 1. Country music show 2. Kenny Loggins dream 3. Surreal arrangement in which Loggins actually opened for himself At age 63, Kenny Loggins is “pursuing another dream,” as he explained of his new country band, Blue Sky Riders.

“My music advisor said I was too old to start over,” Loggins said. “He is no longer my music advisor.”

Displaying brilliant harmonies, the threesome of Loggins and Nashville singer-songwriters Gary Burr and Georgia Middleman opened a magical, two-and-a-half hour evening with a set of country originals.

Then, it took Loggins just 30 seconds into his own set to have the crowd under his command as it chimed in on the chorus to “Danny’s Song.” It was just the first of a number of singalongs as Loggins seduced the crowd with a phenomenal offering of clean and powerful vocals.

Sharing songwriting stories along the way, Loggins eased through the old favorites like “Return to Pooh Corner” (“It was the first book I ever read”), “Whenever I Call You Friend” (“I dedicate this to Stevie Nicks who inspired me”)

Uplifting answers: Understanding facelifts Commentary by Dr. Barry Eppley Q: I am a 55 year old woman who is a little overweight. At 5’4” and 190 lbs, I wouldn’t call myself fat – just above my ideal body weight.

The reality is that my weight is very stable and has been relatively the same for almost 20 years. I exercise and eat reasonably, and this is just the way it is. I am fine with that as I am otherwise healthy. My face has always been al little plump, but otherwise firm, until the past few years. I have noticed that there is some jowling appearing along the jawline, but the real problem is my neck. It has gone to hell in the proverbial hand basket. It has gotten so droopy and saggy that I know it is time for some type of necklift. My question is; am I too fat to get a facelift?

A: Your question is a good one and would be a

lot more relevant if you were younger. But as you have gotten older, regardless of your weight, the skin in the neck has begun sag. This sagging is the result of the skin stretching and loosening and no longer being able to support the weight of the fat it contains. Many men and women with similar situations and face shapes actually get great benefit from neck reduction/tightening. Until proven otherwise, it may be that you may get a greater benefit from a necklift than someone who is thinner with less loose skin. Delaying a necklift may make sense if you are planning to lose more than few pounds of weight, but that clearly is not the case.

Movies and business Commentary by David Cain

Great movies are the quintessential entertainment. With a good story line, one can be mesmerized for hours, completely forgetting about the hardships of the real world. Combined superb acting or music, a movie can be transformed to a classic that is worth watching over and over again.

Movies work because, unlike real life, they follow a script, which omits mundane incidents and are edited to create an illusion of sequence.

Characters move from one important scene to another without the normal restrictions of time and place. The audience follows the drama to conclusion with great amusement.

In one sense, businesses can never be like the movies because they require intense day-to-day work to create the goods or services to be offered.

There is no script and no editing to eliminate the routine events. Good or bad, each moment must be endured. A day in the life of any business may be a good story to tell, and even involve good characters, but there is usually little entertain-

ment value in the sequence of the day.

Marketing a business, on the other hand, is an entirely different thing and can be exactly like a movie. A good marketer will create a plan or script to be followed that will capture the essence of the business and then deliver the story about the products or services to the audience in a seamless and compelling message, thereby creating goodwill for the company that inspires customer loyalty.

It is paramount to have the right team to deliver the message to the audience. A great movie is created by artists who merge their individual talents and efforts into a collaborative masterpiece. Similarly, a successful marketing group combines the expertise and skills of professionals to develop an impactful story. To quote a classic movie: “Choose wisely.”

Our church has really started taking the love of Christ to the streets. The other day I was with a team walking the streets in Indianapolis. We were inviting people to come get a free meal.

As I turned a corner, I noticed a young couple.

And honestly, what surprised me was how dirty they were.

I remember seeing dirt in the creases of their skin. They obviously hadn’t showered in some time. When we walked up to them, I’m sad to say that I was at a loss for words. All those theology classes, years of pastoring to the suburban middle class… And here I stood looking in the eyes of a homeless girl, and I didn’t know what to do or say. One of my staff members walked up and broke the awkward moment by giving her a hug.

Where do you start when the need is so great?

That night driving home, my mind was racing. My thoughts constantly wandered back to that situation over the next 24 hours, relentlessly reminding me of my ministerial inadequacies. I ended up on my couch the next evening crying like a baby. I kept thinking about how my kids have such a great life and how I need to teach them to engage in an economically devolving culture. Reading about ministry is so different than actually doing it. I fully believe

eternity is the sum of what we sow in life. We know, Biblically speaking, that faith is not based on works, though what we do really does matter. It forms our character.

Our actions and attitudes are like seeds planted in the ground; the roots go deep. When we constantly complain, grumble, analyze, and criticize, it reaches into every relationship we have. The roots thread through our marriage, workplace, and children. They become the immovable oak that keeps us from engaging in a broken world.

What seeds are you planting in life? What are you planting in your children? Would Christ be proud? I know that, as a pastor, I want to teach my children and church to generously throw seeds of God’s truth and grace. We will wholeheartedly hang onto the truth in the Scripture while engaging our world with love and grace.

“And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’”

Outdoors Coping with the fungus among us INSIDE & OUT

Commentary by Holly Lindzy From the dinner plate to the doctor’s office, fungus is a part of everyday life – and the garden is no exception.

As a gardener, I have terrific respect for fungi. Its versatility is boundless. Many species are of great benefit to the gardener’s efforts, even providing nourishment. Yet others positively ruin the looks of the garden, literally, overnight. Talk about a love-hate relationship.

Fungi reproduce by releasing spores. These spores travel by way of water (rain or hose), wind and gardener; say, if we use infected leaves as mulch for the garden. When the spores have found a host, the fungus begins its infection.

When the conditions are just right (damp and dark), the fungus grows and begins to occupy the affected plant. Now the struggle begins.

Once leaves are completely infected, they start to drop. To prevent further fungal issues, clean up the fallen leaves. Otherwise a secondary infection may occur when water splashes from the fallen leaves onto newer, unaffected leaves.

But you’re not in the clear just yet.

Good gardening practices discourage the growth of fungus in our gardens. For example, water in the morning and water the soil instead

of the foliage. Allow enough time for the foliage to dry completely before night fall … the warm, drying sun is the fungi’s worst enemy. Also, keep good air circulation around susceptible plants by trimming away excess growth to allow for more air to circulate through the plant.

While selecting new plants for the garden, look for resistant varieties such as Crabapple “Prairiefire” or Phlox “David.”

This gives you a chance to enjoy problematic plants without the Phlox David worry.

And, from time to time, it may be necessary to handle fungal issues with a fungicide, regardless of how hard we try. Use fungicide as a preventative as early in the season as possible, just as the buds are beginning to break open and then reapply after it rains. Ultimately, sanitation is the best prevention.

So, whether you’re talking mushrooms or mildew, don’t let a fungus drive you batty. When it has you feeling blue, smother a steak with your favorite fungi and you’ll feel better in no time.

Original deck: This home is located in the Ashbrooke neighborhood on the west side of Carmel, and was built in 1992. The homeowners were ready to replace the existing deck.

“We had two reasons to remodel the deck.

First, it was falling apart and we were piecing it together. Second, we had just renovated the kitchen, knowing that we will stay in the house longer. We wanted to be able to enjoy the deck area, too.”

Budgeting decisions: The design team presented three different levels of upgrade.

“Once we discovered the cost of our original vision for the deck, we realized it was out of our budget range. The final design gave us the space we were looking for within our budget. We were originally talking about multi-levels and mixing stone and wood. In the end, we felt that the multi-level Trex decking made the most sense for us.”

Working around existing trees: “It was important to keep the trees. Having to work within the parameters of the trees made it challenging, especially with the root systems and the shape of the existing bushes. I felt if we removed bushes and trees, I was not going to enjoy the deck as much. So, the design worked within the

Deck details: The deck was constructed with Trex Transcend decking with “tree house” as the main color and “vintage lantern” as the perimeter trim color. A Trex railing system was also installed, including powder-coated aluminum balusters. Trex low voltage riser lights were also installed on each stair riser. A concrete stoop at the garage door and a niche for the garden hose were also part of the final construction.

Favorite features: “My favorite part of it

is just sitting on the couch and looking into the trees. It is so peaceful. I also love the lighting.

Dusk to dawn, they automatically come on, which gives the deck a very professional look.

We wanted unique touches. I believe it will help sell the home when it is time.”
