In terms of responsibility, he said the town is ready to see a project like this come to fruition.

Canan said various plans for redevelopment in the downtown area have been in the works for years, including a plan that may have gone forward had the economy not crashed when it did.

The time to capitalize, invest and build is now, according to Canan.

“What Fishers is doing is, really, I think positioning itself well with those individuals in place, with all this new infrastructure that’s going on,” he said.

“Fishers is in a great position to capitalize on that.”

When the economy evens out and others are building, the development may already be established.

As far as funding for required infrastructure, Kreutzinger said he believes the new property taxes generated from the new buildings in a tax increment funding district will work.

Gritter said she thinks it “seems like a good plan.”

“What this will do, in my opinion, is kind of kick-start other development,” Canan said.

Noblesville woman arrested for suspected neglect at Super Target – On July 30 an unattended child was reported to the Hamilton County Dispatch Center.

The child was locked in a vehicle at the Super Target at 11750 Commercial Drive. FPD and Fire Department Personnel were sent out. The officers located the mother of the child, who told officers she went into the Super Target “to run an errand” and left him for 30 minutes. FFD paramedics checked the child’s condition, and he did not need any more medical attention. The suspect, Roni Rose Penn, was arrested for neglect of a dependant, a “D” felony.

INDOT to stop late night traffic on I-69 during next 10 days – Milestone Contractors is installing beams for the new Ind. 37 flyover ramp as of midnight tonight (Wednesday, August 8 at 12 a.m.). In order for the new beams to go in, traffic stops will occur between midnight and 5 a.m.

The stops, conducted by Indiana State Police, are planned to take 20 minutes. ISP patrols will be present in the work zone.

Water usage drops, Citizens Water still in ‘water shortage warning’

By Dan Domsic •dan@youarecurrent.com According to Citizens Water (the organization providing water to 300,000 residences in Fishers, Marion County and other area communities), the recent watering bans imposed in late July impacted the usage and the reservoirs.

Sarah Holsapple, Media Relations Coordinator at Citizens Energy Group, said that overall daily usage dropped by 50 million gallons of water.

Holsapple said the company’s all-time record for drawing water from local reservoirs hit 230 million gallons in one day during the end of June. According to Holsapple, daily usage typically fluctuates.

Unless major rainstorms pelt the region for several days in a row, Holsapple said that Citizens Water will continue to operate under a “water shortage warning” for the rest of the summer.

Community watering bans are meant to keep Citizens Water out of a state of emergency.

The ban in Fishers has met opposition.

Town Manager Scott Fadness said, as last of last week, that the Town of Fishers has addressed more than 500 individual complaints thus far.

He said 187 verbal and written warnings were issued since the beginning of the mandatory watering ban, as well as five $500 fines.

To ensure compliance, Fadness said the town is doing exactly what it should.

Before the bans were put in place, Citizens Water saw a 40% usage of water going towards irrigation purposes, which now sits at 10-15% usage.

“We’d like to see that cut back even more,” Holsapple said.

Currently, the Morse Reservoir, which is near two Citizens Water treatment facilities, is 5.75 feet lower than ‘full,’ and Geist Reservoir is about 1.9 feet from full.

Citizens Water started drawing from the Geist Reservoir to relieve Morse, which, in turn, is typically used when the White River needs relief.

Holsapple said Citizens Water has not been notified of any water pressure issues so far.

Businesses weather road construction

By Dan Domsic • dan@youarecurrent.com Businesses on 96th Street and Allisonville Road are riding out the construction at the intersection.

The construction project, which is set to be complete in November has been in progress all summer.

Sunny Krieg, the office manager at Andy Oleson State Farm, said business has been unaffected by the construction project. Customers can mail or call payments in, thus avoiding the traffic at the intersection.

Roland Morales, the store manager at the CVS pharmacy on the southwest corner of the intersection, could not talk details about the project and its impact on customers, but he said he is looking forward to the intersection opening up again.

Lauren Epperson, owner and stylist at Just Teasin’ Hair Salon in the strip mall northwest of the intersection, said her business has faced challenges.

“Luckily, there’s established clients,” she said.

Epperson said established clients return to the salon even during construction. The salon has been proactive about letting returning clients know the condition of the roads.

One day earlier this summer, a water line was hit at the construction site, and the salon lost access to the utility – a critical resource in the hair-care business.

What’s new at Hamilton Southeastern Schools?

By Dan Domsic • dan@youarecurrent.com Current in Fishers caught up with Marianna Richards, HSE School District director of school and community relations, to study up on what Fishers students and parents can expect his academic year.

Richards said lunch prices increased this year.

Lunch for students in kindergarten through sixth grade costs $2.20. Lunch for students in grades seven through 12 are $2.35. Milk is $.50, and breakfast is $1.25 at schools that provide it.

HSE Junior High One major change is the new HSE Junior High facility at 12278 N. Cyntheanne Rd. The capacity at the new school building is 1,107 people.

A dedication for the new junior high is slated for August 22 at 6 p.m.

Freshman center The building that housed the old junior high school, located across Olio Road from HSE High School, houses a new freshman center.

come out to the freshman center for the Panther Preview tomorrow from 1 to 7 p.m. to take care of pictures, grab schedules, get acquainted to the new building and more.

New science labs geared towards high school level work are just one feature of the freshman center. In addition to the new labs, a wing is dedicated to the special education program FOCUS (Foundation of Characteristics Unique to Success). The program is geared towards students who have emotional or behavioral challenges. A smaller classroom setting and lower teacher-to-student ratio is used to help students increase coping skills and social strategies, with the goal being to transition the students back to their own schools and a regular classroom setting, according to Richards. The program is for students in kindergarten through grade 12.

Senior Academies Further down the road, parents can expect to see more information on new senior academies at HSE High School and Fishers High School.

The academies require a referendum (which may be coming up in spring 2013) to become a reality for Fishers students. If the academies happen, they won’t be around until 2015 at the earliest, according to Richards.

The academies focus on bringing college-level courses to students and putting them in an environment closer to college or the work place.

Jeff Hill, town director of engineering leads the way in infrastructure development

The $8.6 million project, funded by the River Place PUD (as Current in Fishers reported in April), is managed by Jeff Hill, Town of Fishers director of engineering.

Hill runs what he calls a “skeleton crew” of six staff members in his engineering department.

He leads engineering efforts in terms of infrastructure projects, as well as commercial and developmental initiatives, which includes making sure projects are on the level with codes and ordinances.

Meet Hill, the staff member charged with building the thoroughfares of Fishers’ tomorrow, today.

Hill’s road to an engineering career began an ocean away. As a kid in a military family, he went Hill through high school at a United States Air Force base in Germany. It was evident that he had a command over science and math.

“It’s probably similar to a lot of kids that are in high school, and they say ‘I kind of like math and science,’” he said.

He said then someone asked the question, “Are you interested in engineering?”

The search for a college education began, and Hill and the family turned to Purdue University and its engineering program.

From there, he helped build bridges with a private firm, and later landed a gig with the Hamilton County Highway Dept.

– which centered on similar projects that he now handles in Fishers.

“That was my first foray into public-sector work, and I enjoyed that,” Hill said. “(I) worked on a lot of projects throughout the county.”

Two private-sector jobs later, one of which lasted a decade, Hill found himself back in the public realm as the Town of Fishers director of engineering. He has held the position since January.

The newly opened roundabout at 131st street and Lantern Road Town Councilman Stuart Easley said that getting up-to-speed on the current projects is a major accomplishment.

Easley said the project commuters see in progress today were involved in the planning stages before Hill was part of the picture, and ultimately, he believes that the public lost no time in the execution of these projects.

“Clearly,” Easley said, “we’ve hired a seasoned professional.”

Driving through the construction zone at 96th Street and Allisonville Road, it’s difficult to imagine what kind of skills an engineering director for an entire municipality must call on to complete the task.

Hill said it’s all about balancing technical skill, financial understanding, being proactive about communication, and transitioning staff members into leaders that can make independent decisions.

Employing construction ideas that depend on taxpayer funding is part of the balancing act. He said Town Manager Scott Fadness has stepped in to help him understand where funds come from.

“I don’t know if there’s any one shining moment yet,” Hill said.

“I’ve just enjoyed brainstorming and problem-solving with our folks internally and externally,” Hill said.

What do they not understand?

A car is not a babysitter It is our position that children should never be left unattended in an automobile and the community must remain vigilant.

The recent rash of incidents involving children being left alone in sweltering vehicles begs the question, “What was the parent thinking?”

Ideally, parenting should be a selfless commitment. The reality is that parenting can be very inconvenient at times. Many parents shudder at the thought of chasing toddlers around the grocery store or dread the crying caused by waking a child out of a sound sleep to remove them from the car.

Yet, we do it without a lot of hand-wringing because it’s part of being a responsible parent.

An automobile should never be used as a babysitter. A locked car is not a safe-haven for children. Leaving a child in an automobile is like putting them in an oven-like death trap. It does not even have to be hot outside for the temperature to rapidly escalate inside of a parked car.

Is a peaceful shopping experience really worth risking the well-being of your child?

It is amazing, really, how static we become as we age. Most of the folks from my generation still refer to “taping” something from television, even though the use of videotape has long been replaced by some digital recording device. Yet, why would we bother to learn the new vernacular? It is almost hard to imagine the number of words that are likely doomed to fade in the coming years. Will we still have car keys in two decades? Will pennies still jingle in our pockets? Will television even exist in any identifiable way, let alone the words used to describe trying to capture it for later review?

But it is more than our unwillingness to accommodate modern, more accurate phraseology. So often, we fail to take steps to remain current in our thoughts and actions as we grow older. We cling to outdated and expensive cell phone contracts rather than considering a renegotiation. We refuse to bid our insurance or try a new restaurant for no reason,

other than “knowing” that an old plan is good enough. In a world where change is constant, can we survive without constant change?

It is a struggle to stay current. Changing our computers, or cell phones, banks, doctors or service providers for business – they all take effort. They all take thought. And they all take time. So, how do we make it work? Like everything, isn’t it true that slow-and-steady wins the race? Every day, I try to read one article, meet with an expert, or learn about a new-and-better approach to something that I already do. If I’m lucky I can implement once a month, but the knowledge motivates and reduces resistance for whenever the time allows.

Regardless, isn’t an open mind to opportunity better than closed?

As you might know, another rocket scientist was arrested for leaving her child in her hot car as she was shopping in the Super Target store at 116th Street and I-69. When did common sense go out the sealed window? Allow us to answer: When the heat got to her and other perpetrators’ brains, apparently. This is a hideous, heinous crime, and for it she should be punished (some have suggested in like fashion). We appreciate the Fishers Police Dept.’s swift reaction to save the youth, but it never should have come to that. We implore our town’s residents, though, to call police if they should witness such an idiotic action and to do so quickly. It just makes us shake our heads.

••• Water usage continues to be a hot topic around town, and with good reason. Water levels continue to recede and there is no appreciable rainfall forecast for the near future, but Town Manager Scott Fadness and the police are not standing idly by with the simple conservation requirement. Fadness said the town recently addressed more than 500 individual complaints (we salute those that filed complaints), issued 187 written and/or verbal warnings and gave out five $500 fines. A representative from Citizens Water, responsible for servicing Indianapolis and much of the surrounding area, including Fishers, said there have been no reports of pressure problems. Yet. We commend the vigilance of the town, but we also know its time can be better spent. That would happen if all residents and business owners simply comply. We salute the majority that does. Still, it seems in this Summer of the Drought, nothing is simple, is it?

My husband and I recently renewed our wedding vows, and as weird as the whole experience turned out to be, I’m so glad we did. Here’s the skinny.

To celebrate our fortieth birthdays, Doo wanted to vacation on the beach where we first met… with our four children and his parents.

Yeah. Not exactly my idea of a romantic getaway. As any mom can testify, you can’t truly relax if you’re “on duty” the whole time.

So, I tried to steer him towards a Belize rainforest package for two, but six airline tickets later, we were committed to “Family Va-cay 2012.”

Disappointed, I quickly launched my Plan B: “We’re renewing our vows, babe, since you scheduled this trip on our anniversary. Make peace with it.” He reluctantly agreed. I tracked down a local gal on the internet to help me with the details, and then bought three linen shirts for the boys and two matching sundresses for the girls.

That was the extent of my planning.

Only, once we arrived, I got caught up in the swimming and snorkeling and quaintness of the small town with dodgy internet service, and fell in love with sharing this special place with my kids.

(Doo had been right!) I didn’t contact my “wedding planner” until two days before the proposed event.

Unfortunately, like in many tropically hot locations, logistics move at a much slower pace: She thought she had a minister lined up, she was www.currentinfishers.com

still working on a cake, and wouldn’t the massage parlor/gazebo make the perfect spot?

Feeling slightly better once I realized I could remove the “1-Hour Massages Given Here” sign, and trusting that it would all work out in the end, I successfully kept the panic at bay until T-minus three hours.

Maybe I should shower. Why didn’t I bring my defrizz cream? This bra is showing! What am I doing?

My daughters calmed me down and found an old deodorant stick for the “something borrowed” bit.

When I came downstairs, self-conscious about my hair and dress and tan lines and wondering why on earth I’d thought renewing my vows would be so awesome, Doo looked at me and said, “You look beautiful; maybe we could just take pictures and skip the ceremony?” He was nervous, too!

But do it we did. And it was lovely. And affirming. And surprisingly emotional. I honestly think the words meant more to me this time then they did 16 years ago. In the presence of our kids, Doo’s parents, the governor (AKA, the lastminute officiant), the coordinator, and a tiki bar singer who performed “Rhinestone Cowboy,” we said “I do” again. Happy fortieth to us! Peace out.

Despite the high divorce rate in this country, I am confident my wife will never send me packing. That’s because the packing I’m doing now is driving her crazy. As we prepare for carpet installation, Mary Ellen continues her meticulous approach to the task, carefully wrapping each knick-knack in newspaper or bubble wrap. My routine is quite different. I’m pretty much just scooping stuff off shelves and shoving it in boxes. Breakables? Give me a break.

The good news is: I’m done. Everything is packed. The bad news is: I’m done. Everything is packed.

You see, the carpet won’t be here for almost a month. We can survive three weeks without the Dresden China Ballerina that my mother gave us, but I’m starting to get a little edgy about no bar soap or bed sheets.

My wife isn’t happy. “The system you’re employing isn’t even user-friendly. Let’s see… You have a giant box that says ‘junk,’ one labeled ‘doo-dads,’ and one marked ‘stuff.’ And what’s the box with the huge letter ‘C’ on it?”

“That’s another method I use. Everything in the box starts with the letter C. Cameras, cancelled checks, can openers…”

“That explains why I haven’t seen the cat in two days.”

Mary Ellen went on to say that I was behaving in the characteristically neurotic way in which I approach everything in life. I defended myself, of course. “I don’t think I am that compulsive. It’s true, all my shirt hangers have to face in the same direction, but my closet runs east and west so I can’t possibly…”

“I am begging you not to finish this explanation. You’re really scaring me. You also put the condiments in the fridge in alphabetical order; and the weirdest thing is the way you arrange books on your office shelves.”

“Wait a second. Lots of people have a special way of doing that.” “…By the authors’ first names?”

Despite my wife’s complaints, she realized that, once all the boxes had been neatly piled in the garage, there was a whole lot less disorder in the house – kind of a nice feeling, she said.

“Dick, let’s just sit on the couch, cuddle up, watch TV and enjoy our clutter-free home while it lasts.”

“Why don’t we go to the movies instead?” I asked.

“You packed the remote, didn’t you?”

Editor, Intriguing? Hilarious? HARMLESS? If you think binding, gagging and hitting a woman is a way to jumpstart your libido, then you have no place on a community newpaper.

You think trying it out might spice up your life? Then go right ahead, but only blame yourself when you and your husband become addicted to porn and cannot have a meaningful relationship without you being hit and abused.

Did you NOTICE that Christian was not being hit at any time?

What did you make of that? That it is considered acceptable to hit a woman but not a man? PLEASE. And think about your teenaged daughter and son and their friends reading it without full understanding and think that is the modern lifestyle and all the heartache and damage that would bring. I think you owe the reading public an apology! Leave the book reviews to the professionals.

Editor, I just finished reading your article in our July 24th Current in Fishers, regarding the “Community development director announces downtown redevelopment”.

Here’s a suggestion that Tom Dickey perhaps didn’t think about.

There are two virtually empty strip malls within a few short blocks of Town Hall. Instead of tearing up the these parcels of land to put up more expensive building projects (that I presume all citizens of Fishers will have to pay for) for shops and luxury apartments why not invest the time and effort AND the money into drawing more business to the virtually empty strip centers. Fishers is overloaded with apartments now, and there is no need for luxury apartments.

Your latest column, “Focus on the road...” leaves me disappointed in you personally.

In short, it gets down to you relating about your “daily cursing” at other drivers. (I hope you are not a mother expecting to raise well-mannered children.)

And your use of Jesus’ name as slang, or “in vain” as it is commonly referred to, is extremely poor taste in a column for the general public.

A column that truly had some interesting points... hurt your personal appeal to many. You may not care about that... but it would be good if you did.

I would have hoped the publisher would have made some ground rules about the careless use of God’s name like that in print.

Editorial cartoon innaccurate on Obama speech Editor, I am disappointed in both the Current Editorial Staff and Tim Campbell, cartoonist, for the cartoon published July 24, 2012. It is not only a misrepresentation of President Obama’s remarks, but fails to rebut a falsehood currently being pushed by candidate Romney. I don’t know if it is Campbell’s political leanings or his political ignorance that prompted such a misleading cartoon message. If Campbell actually listened to Obama’s speech, he would have known the President was emphasizing American Excellence for providing infrastructure resources that have been built by many American entrepreneurs. Talking with history-makers Commentary by Dan Domsic As I was doing the reporting for this issue of Current in Fishers, sitting down and looking at old photographs of Fishers, I realized something. And it should have been obvious.

The people I talk to during the business week, whether they’re small business owners, concerned residents, or staff members with the Town of Fishers, are all history-makers.

Specifically, holding a picture of the old municipal building in my hand is one of the most revealing pieces evidencing that fact. The building now holds Gallery 116. If you’re not familiar with the shop, it’s pretty much across the street from the town’s municipal complex.

That’s not even the big shock or surprise.

The photo, courtesy of Fritz Kreutzinger of the car dealership Fritz in Fishers, was taken in 1990. Now, anyone could have guessed that was around when the picture was taken, considering the condition of the photo and type of paper it’s printed on. In fact, I felt silly thinking that the picture could have been taken in the 1950s.

For a little extra perspective, Kreutzinger even shared with me a bill from an

old gas station on 116th Street. It’s dated Sept. 30, 1948.

The name on the invoice from the Crystal Flash Petroleum Corporation is Nilo Booth. The faded copy is hard to read. It would appear Booth was involved in a transaction for some gasoline. He bought $12.16 worth of one type of gasoline. Twelve bucks got the guy 760 gallons of the stuff. Another $25.22 bought him 970 gallons of “Super Flash,” which Kreutzinger says must have been the premium brand.

However, the picture of the municipal building is just a testament to how much Fishers has grown since that picture was taken. Monstrous schools, like Hamilton Southeastern High School, have expanded.

New businesses sprouted downtown, some locally owned, some not.

As events unfold today, everyone in Fishers should know that they are writing history. The Fishers of tomorrow probably will not look anything like the Fishers of today.

Pizzology offers unique, delicious gourmet pizza

By Rachel Ferry • editorial@youarecurrent.com There doesn’t seem to be a shortage of Italianinspired restaurants in and around town. I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing several and did NOT want to do an Italian review next. However, after eating at Pizzology, it definitely deserves a spotlight.

I just can’t get enough of the Pizzology Chop Salad. This crisp, romaine lettuce salad with fire-oven roasted tomatoes, prosciutto, shallots and gorgonzola has the most delicious, fresh citronette dressing ever. The dressing is made with a smooth olive oil and the juice of a lemon that has been put in the 500 degree fire oven for just a few minutes to bring out the natural sugars.

I have had the joy of dining at Pizzology four times this month and have sampled a few different appetizers and entrees. The fresh breadsticks are accompanied with two rich and flavorful sauces, the white being my favorite. When not in the mood for pizza, my entree was Italian Mussels which are perfectly steamed in white wine, salumi, olive oil and garlic.

The signature pizzas are baked in a fire oven, leaving a wonderfully charred crust. My favorite is the Sausage Pizza with homemade sausage complimented by freshly shaved fennel, onion and peppadew peppers. The Old Kentucky Rome, a white sauce pizza with roasted figs, arugula, Kentucky-cured prosciutto and taleggio cheese, while different, is delicious. The pasta

Michael Meneghini Hip and knee replacement surgery has traditionally been associated with older adults – those beyond age 65. Today, however, people in their 40s and 50s are considering joint replacement surgery to relieve pain in order to stay active, continue their favorite activities and maintain their quality of life.

To serve this emerging younger population, extensive ongoing research designs cuttingedge orthopedic implants that are durable, have improved bearing services and that will minimize risks and side effects. On the surgical side, techniques such as navigation technology, which monitors the position and alignment of the implant in relation to the patient’s anatomy, achieve improved mobility and range of motion for patients.

Buttitta’s Pizzeria offers classic food from scratch

By Dan Domsic • dan@youarecurrent.com Tucked away in a strip mall just off Brooks School Drive and 116th Street is Buttita’s Pizzeria, a family owned pizza joint that boasts ingredients made from scratch.

Co-owner John Buttitta’s family has been in the restaurant business on and off since the 1940s. John and his brother Jeff, the other coowner, are no strangers to the ins and outs of running the operation.

John is the resident chef.

The dough for each pizza crust, which is thin crust, is made from scratch along with the rest of the pizza. John blends the pork for the Italian sausage topping in-house to ensure that the product is different than anything at other restaurants or grocery stores.

“I don’t like to do anything that isn’t authentic,” he said.

Buttitta’s Pizzeria stocks all the items a patron should expect – bread sticks, chicken wings, beer, sandwiches and other appetizers. But patrons should take a chance and ask John what’s off the menu.

“There are people that come in sometimes and just say, ‘Make me something a little different, something maybe off the menu,’” he said.

“That’s fun to be creative.”

This week, John plans to craft a dish he recently tested.

It consists of caramelized onions, fresh asparagus, penne pasta, a pinch of red pepper, and prosciutto.

He said he likes to offer customers various Italian dishes every now and then, and encourages customers to ask for something different.

Buttitta’s opened its doors in January and faces only one major challenge – raising awareness of its location.

The restaurant recently John Buttitta started delivering to local neighborhoods.

Let the Luck begin

Andrew Luck, as the new kid in town, has the daunting task of filling the shoes of a legendary quarterback and simultaneously re-creating the Indianapolis Colts as a winning franchise. Heralded as a champion before even taking the field, Luck is guaranteed a certain degree of success and failure.

With Luck, journalists not only have a fresh story, but they will have hundreds of clichés, puns and adages using the words “luck” and “lucky” at their disposal. From this point on, every story associated with the Colts will have an element of “luck” to it.

Of course, very little of Luck’s success will depend on actual “luck.” Almost his entire life, Luck has been relentlessly training and preparing to take the stage in ways that fans do not and cannot fathom. His success will occur, if at all, because of years of physical and mental preparation, one step and one day at a time. When he takes the field, Luck will succeed only as well as he has prepared.

Successful companies follow a similar pattern as Andrew Luck. Business success is built and maintained through years of

planning and preparation, one step and one day at a time. The consuming public is unaware of the cost and effort that lead to success. Like Colts fans on game day, consumers expect an outstanding performance and a winning product or service every time, regardless of what it takes.

It hurts falling off your bike!

Commentary by Mike Colaw I remember teaching my eldest son to ride his bike. Exhausted, running behind him with my hand on the seat, I struggled to catch my breath, all while trying to hold him up.

It was inevitable. My exhaustion pushed me to trust in his ability before he was truly ready.

As soon as I let go, to my amazement, he took off. Ten, even twenty yards out, he was doing great. Then, all of a sudden, BOOM! He hit the ground. With skinned knees and tears, he yelled for dad. I found myself running, yet again.

It’s exhausting teaching kids to ride a bike.

Over time, and a few more bloody knees, he finally figured it out and the neighborhood became his playground. His posse of 2nd and 3rd graders now ruled the suburban streets.

It’s interesting. Although he is quite a talented bike rider now, he knows almost nothing about all the intricate laws of nature and the creative engineering that went into his bike ride. The countless brilliant men that developed the bicycle, their stories, experiences, and the process of bike creation have never entered into his little mind. He just likes to ride.

The other day I was talking to some people about us, as Christians, needing to be more involved in our community. We need to volunteer with the poor and serve those who are in need and hurting. I mentioned that maybe we need

to start more training classes to create a place where we can teach and prepare people about every aspect of serving others. A lady who works for me piped up and said, “We don’t need another training class, we need to just do it!�

It amazes me how modern-day Christians have become worshipers of evaluation. As a graduate student myself, I will absolutely agree that study is extremely important. The problem is arises with Christians who have spent much of their spiritual lives reading about those who have developed ways to serve and studying all the intricate nuances of having conversations with people who may be hurting. They may read about how to balance our lives when we begin to serve, so that we don’t burn out. Then, when we finally have the courage to serve, or “ride the bike,� and inevitably fall and skin our emotional knee, we abandon service and proclaim, “See, I told you I wasn’t ready!�

The Bible says that those who know the good they ought to do, and don’t, commit a sin.

Maybe some Christians who are obsessed with analysis alone are living in‌. well, we will just let James 4:17 fill in the blank.

A room without a view Commentary by Bob Walters

To create Day 1 of Creation, God said, “Let there be light.” And there was light. That’s Genesis 1, verse 2.

But, it’s not until verse 14, on Day 4, that God creates the sun and the stars – the things that make light. So, what gives? How was there light before there was light?

It’s an easy one, really. The “light” first created in Genesis is God’s light; the light of the world that divided the darkness. And that light is Jesus Christ, the son of the father. The sun and the stars are evidence of God’s glory; Jesus Christ is God’s glory.

It’s not unusual for people with only a casual knowledge of the Bible to think that Jesus Christ was a new idea; God’s Plan B for New Testament salvation after the wrath, sin, mayhem, and failure of the Old Testament. No, Christ is an old, eternal hand.

The Christian confession of Christ is best encapsulated, I think, in John 1:1-14. It lyrically tells us that Christ – also called the Logos, or Word of God – was not only there in the beginning; in fact, the Logos made everything.

These are Christian basics. Secular skeptics and more than a few “Christian” preachers and congregations conveniently skip over this very important truth that Jesus is the Word of God, the light of the World (John 8:12), and the way, and the truth, and the life for all who seek

a relationship with God. I bring up “light” and the primacy of Christ because it’s a fairly common thing for outsiders and non-believers to accuse Christians of wearing “religious blinders” when answering questions about their faith. Those who either don’t understand or are hostile to the idea of God, Christ, salvation, truth, scripture, right, wrong, evil, etc., often can’t understand an honest answer because they don’t understand their own question. “Blinders” suggests a lack of light for Christians, which I think is the opposite of the truth.

For example, “Who gets into heaven? Does Ghandi? Does a murderer?” The answer is not binary, and I’m not wearing blinders to say: 1. I trust God with all that; 2. It’s truly not for me to say; 3. Christianity isn’t centered on heaven – it’s centered on the glory of Jesus Christ; and 4. If you don’t believe in heaven to start with – or Jesus or the Bible – why would you care who goes there?

Christianity is illuminated by the entire light of the entire world. Those who try to find truth without that light have a room without much of a view.

One of the most anticipated “surprises” in traveling is at the end of the siq, the narrow sandstone split that leads to Petra. After walking more than a mile between walls so high that only a sliver of sky can be seen, the tall façade of the “Treasury of the Pharaoh” suddenly appears, hewn from the cliff face and glowing pink in the sun. Pockmarks in the stone urn above the classic portico reflect the unsuccessful efforts of local Bedouins to get the gold they say the Pharaoh stored there after chasing the Israelites all the way from Egypt. Other legends say the rock Moses struck to get water is along the siq and the grave of Aaron is somewhere nearby. Although Moses and Aaron may have been close, there was never any money in the Treasury and the Pharaoh of the Exodus missed Petra by almost a thousand years.

Petra was founded about 400 B.C. by the Nebateans at the center of the caravan routes then crisscrossing the Middle East. The “Treasury” was actually the tomb for a Nebatean king. A second impressive façade called the “Monastery,” reached by climbing steps through steep mountains, was another tomb. Petra has so many elaborately carved tombs that some people have speculated it was a city of the dead, reserved for burials and religious ceremonies. However, Petra

probably was home to 30,000 people, protected from enemies by the siq and nurtured by a system that captured water from flash floods.

Petra was recently named one of the new Seven Wonders of the World and is definitely worth the trip. But don’t expect to find the impressive rooms and statues behind the Treasury’s façade shown in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.”

Like the gold in the urn and the rock struck by Moses, they exist only in the imagination.

It is proven over and over that the little things can matter most – especially when it comes to decorating.

When a space has a good structure, but lacks the panache needed to turn your head, it might just be lacking finishing touches. Sometimes small changes and tweaks can add energy and style to your room.

• One of the easiest is to update with pillows.

Consider shapes other than the 18x18 square. One of my favorites is the ballshaped pillow!

• These same pillows can announce a new color palette. The drama of a monochromatic room that features a piece of art bursting with color can be softened with a couple of the hues in the pillow fabric.

• Remove art prints under glass and replace with original art … even if you need to be the artist! Glass is reserved for photos, pen and ink, and watercolor.

• Frame a handwritten note from a loved one.

• Change an area rug or pull it up to expose hardwood or tile floors.

• Put your lighting on a dimmer for a more ambient atmosphere.

• Overlap and layer empty frames painted in bold accent colors.

• Remove tired towel racks and replace with hooks. Drape thick, new towels over the hooks for a textural difference.

• Replace fussy accessories with ones that are clean-lined in bold, solid colors.

• Lean your artwork rather than hanging it for a way to easily move it later.

• Consider cowhides as rugs for a dramatic statement.

• Add some chevron pattern to your decorating for a trendy look.

Commentary by Holly Lindzy Who doesn’t relish in that little rainbow from the spray of the garden hose? It’s one of the simple joys of gardening. . . ’till the man says I gotta put the hose up due to drought. Dang it.

Then my watering chores are all about priority. Firstly, my potted annuals get water since they’re the first to dry out in this weather. Save water and time by use a slow drip “aquaglobe” or similar device.

Second, if I had some, would be veggies.

Consistent moisture will be important for tomato growers while the peppers can stand a little heat – again, priorities.

Trees and shrubs, especially as they are establishing that first and second season need at least an inch of water a week. To achieve this simply lay the hose on a slow stream at the base of the plant and walk away for 20 to 30 minutes. You’d be surprised how much water a plant doesn’t get by showering it with a water wand or sprinkler.

And an evergreen need not be hit by repetitive sprinkling, anyway. Please.

Perennials should be mulched up to two inches to keep moisture consistent. A little wilting here and there won’t hurt established perennials.

And the money to replace them is not what it would be for our trees and shrubs.

great for establishing trees and shrubs and they make a low profile model to fit under evergreens or around shrubs. Simply fill with water and walk away. Check your local garden center, Salsbery Brothers in Carmel keeps them in stock.

Until the man lifts the ban, I have to do my part to keep things in check and still enjoy gardening. The only thing left to do is grow cacti, I suppose. And somehow that just doesn’t seem like much fun.

Eliminating tub for enlarged door-less shower Commentary by Larry Greene ORIGINAL MASTER BATH: This home is located in the Kings Mill subdivision on the west side of Carmel. The home was built in 1994 and the current owners have lived in the home for 13 years.

REMOVING A TUB: The homeowner wanted to update the master in line with their lifestyle. “We wanted a bathroom that was compatible with our lifestyle. Easier to maintain - the less maintenance, the happier I am. I love stone/granite and wanted to have that in the bathroom.” The design focused on eliminating the large garden tub and making room for a larger shower. According to the owner, “We’ve had a Jacuzzi tub in every house we have owned and have never used them. We don’t miss the tub at all. We are on the go all the time and it takes too long to fill up.

Also, the jets get moldy because we rarely use them. On top of that, everything in the bathroom was dated, ugly, and impractical. And, we could never get it to look clean.”

SHOWER DETAILS: The walk-in and door less shower is the owner’s favorite part. “The shower is terrific - we wanted a great shower. The towel warmer and the heated floors are great, and my wife really likes having a ceiling fan. The heated floors are on a timer so they can be ready for me in the morning.”

CABINET DETAILS: The homeowner decided to salvage part of the vanity area. “We kept the cabinets as they were only 6 years old, and had them painted. We also kept our mirrors, light fixtures, and toilet.”
