Fishers receiving $13 million fewer federal COVID-19 relief funds than expected

By Jonathan Matthes jonathan@youarecurrent.com Fishers will receive approximately $13 million less through the federal American Rescue Plan than expected. The city has been allocated $6.9 million, although initial estimates in early GOVERNMENT March indicated that Fishers would receive nearly $20 million.

“We received our initial estimates in the March or April timeframe, then we got our final notice from the (U.S. Dept. of the) Treasury after they had changed some designations, and we saw a significant decrease,” Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness said.

“And it is a bit quizzical when you look at other communities similar to our size around the state Fadness getting 10 times the amount that we are.”

The cities with the three largest deficits between expectations and reality are all in Hamilton County. Fishers and Carmel are the only two cities in Indiana to receive more than $8 million less than initially announced. Noblesville is receiving $7.3 million less than expected.

South Bend had the fourth-largest deficit at $4.3 million less, but South Bend is receiving $58.9 million in funding, nearly triple what Carmel ($7.5 million), Fishers ($6.9 million) and Noblesville ($6.2 million) are receiving combined.

When initially announced, funding for most cities was tied to population.

Created through the American Rescue Plan, the Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery Fund will distribute $350 billion in relief to various municipalities to help cover COVID-19-related expenses and promote economic recovery. In the March estimates, the three Hamilton County cities were in a population-based category.

But the U.S. Dept. of the Treasury adjusted the designations of some cities, including Fishers, and moved them from the population based-category into a county-based category, costing Fishers $13 million.

“Because our money from community block grants flows through the county, the treasury provided a different designation for us, and that’s what reduced our funding significantly,” Fadness said.

Despite Carmel, Fishers and Noblesville being the fifth-, sixth- and 12th-most populous cities in Indiana, they will only receive the 21st-, 22nd- and 25th-most funding in the state.

“All three of us have been around long enough to not spend the money before you get it. We didn’t have any obligations that we weren’t able to meet, but at the same time it’s very frustrating,” Fadness said.

Gaylor Electric donates $25,000 to Humane Society

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Gaylor Electric recently conducted its inaugural Sporting Clay Event, which raised $25,000 for the GIVING BACK Humane Society for Hamilton County. The funds will go toward life-saving animal care, spaying and neutering and costs the shelter acquires while caring for animals in the facility.

“The Humane Society for Hamilton County is grateful beyond words for Gaylor Electric’s support and efforts in putting together this fundraiser, along with all of their support in putting together our new facility,” HSHC President and CEO Rebecca Stevens stated. “We couldn’t have done it without them.”

Fishers teen dives onto U.S. Olympic team

By Jonathan Matthes jonathan@youarecurrent.com Fishers teen Tyler Downs won the 3-meter springboard competition at the June 13 U.S. Olympic Diving Trials at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis to earn a trip to OLYMPICS the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Downs, 17, defeated a pair of former Olympians, David Boudia of Noblesville and Michael Hixon, to secure one of the two spots on the men’s Olympic diving team.

Andrew Capobianco of Indiana University finished second to earn the other spot.

Downs scored 1333.75 points, 14.35 more points than Capobianco and 18.8 more than Boudia, a three-time Olympian. The Olympic Games begin July 23 and conclude Aug. 8.

“I had no expectations going into this competition, just to have fun and that’s what I did. I dove my best and made it onto the Olympic team,” Downs said on NBC after securing his spot on Team USA. Downs, originally from St. Louis, moved to Fishers for training purposes. He will continue his diving career in the fall at Purdue University, where Boudia will be one of his coaches.

Boudia is a four-time Olympic medalist.

Spartz proposes bill to increase child-care facilities

By Jonathan Matthes jonathan@youarecurrent.com U.S. Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.) has co-authored a bill with Rep. Adrian Smith (R-Neb.) to give states more POLITICS leeway to improve and increase the number of childcare facilities, with an emphasis on rural areas.

Spartz’s 5th District represents all of Hamilton County.

“As a working mom of two young girls, I understand the importance of child-care, especially when it comes to engaging more women in the workforce. This is a very important issue for our state given the significant labor shortages that are impacting businesses,” Spartz stated in a media release.

H.R. 3797, or the Increasing Access to Safe Child Care Facilities Act of 2021, was introduced June 8. If passed, it would make subgrants available to “eligible entities (seeking) to improve and increase the avail-

The priority for the subgrants would go to, but not exclusively, new child-care facilities in rural communities. The bill also would increase child-care options for working families.

“Many federal government programs come with extensive strings, which make them very expensive and inefficient. This bill allows more flexibility to the states to improve effectiveness and provide a greater benefit to Hoosiers,” Spartz stated.

Guerin runner-up in 3A final

SOFTBALL Senior Alicia Flores and junior Izzy Kemp shared pitching duties equally.

“We were blessed with two of the most consistent and dominant pitchers in the state,” Golden Eagles coach Jeff Buckner said. “We rotated starts all year and never missed a beat. The team had total confidence whether it was Alicia or Izzy in the circle.”

Flores finished with a 13-1 record with a 0.67 earned run average and 202 strikeouts in 83 1/3 innings. Kemp was 12-2 with a 0.53 ERA and 225 strikeouts in 93 2/3 innings.

The powerful duo led the Golden Eagles to the IHSAA Class 3A state championship game before losing to Boonville 1-0 June 11 at Center Grove High School’s varsity field in Greenwood.

Guerin finished with a 25-3 record, with the other two losses coming against Class 4A state champion Roncalli.

Macha and Victoria Flores (.333 batting average) will play for Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn., next season while Alicia Flores (.359 average) will play for Maryland-Eastern Shore. Kemp (.407 average) has committed to play for the University of Dayton in 2023.

Annual celebration of Americana back after a 1-year hiatus

By Jonathan Matthes jonathan@youarecurrent.com After a one-year hiatus, Spark!Fishers returns June 22 with a new five-day format. Two concerts, a 5K run/walk, a car show, parade, street fair and a fireworks display highlight the festivities.

“It provides people the opportunity to be a part of a community event, even if maybe that weekend, they are out of town,” Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness said. “They can hit the 5K, or if they can’t make the 5K that weekend, they can make the fireworks and the parade.”

The 2020 Spark!Fishers event was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but positive vaccination trends helped planners decide to move forward with this year’s event.

“It’s really vindicating in the sense that Fishers almost leads the country in vaccination rates, and one of our goals this spring was to do that so that we could have a great summer,” Fadness said. “Here we sit with great vaccination

rates, and then to put on a series of events this summer, that really should be fantastic. It should be a good rebound from what was such a difficult year for so many people.”

A key aspect for Spark!Fishers this year will be to honor those who worked through the pandemic to make the event possible in 2021.

“We really wanted to put our focus this year on honoring our hometown heroes, our first responders, medical professionals, police and fire, and also as a welcome back to the community,” Fishers Parks and Recreation Director Sarah Sandquist said.

Fishers plans to honor the COVID-19 front-line heroes by displaying tributes in the auditorium of City Hall. The Monon District Boy Scout troops will assemble care packages for senior and nursing homes and local hospital employees.

Fishers police and fire departments will conduct demonstrations, and some Boy Scout troops will demonstrate first aid training.

“Then we will have a video playing inside City Hall of interviews with local heroes and highlighting their stories,”

Fishers Community and Public Relations Assistant Director Stephanie Perry said. “People can come in and cool off and participate in honoring our heroes.”

With the exception of registering for the 5K or entering a vehicle in the car show, all Spark!Fishers events are free.

But putting on an event like Spark!Fishers is not. The event will cost the city $85,000. Fishers also raised $200,000 in sponsorships for additional funding from companies like First Internet Bank, the presenting sponsor.

“It’s important to us because Fishers is our home as an organization, and we are making a significant investment in relocating our headquarters to Fishers downtown Nickel Plate District,” said Nicole Lorch, First Internet Bank’s COO. “We intend to be here for many, many years to come, and we love that we are able to help the City of Fishers come together and celebrate our nation and celebrate the community.”

The two races will happen on a weeknight for the first time. The 5K route is through downtown Fishers. The race is planned to start after rush hour.

The Half Pint Half K has a $10 entry fee. Registration for the 5K, for those younger than 12, is $25. The adult entry fee is $35. The start/finish line is at 6 Municipal Dr. Packets for runners can be picked up from noon to 7 p.m. June 22 at the Fishers YMCA, 9012 E. 126th St., Fishers, and at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater from 5 to 6:30 p.m. June 23.

Leading the 5K race will be bicyclists from the First Internet Bank Cycling Team, a team of Category 1 (highest-ranking) cyclists that tour the U.S. “They’ll be the pace car (for the race), if you will,” Lorch said.

The concert will be held at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater and is free to the public. The band had a couple of top 20 hits in the early 1990s. Many factors had to fall into place to draw the group to Spark!Fishers.

“When we heard the Spin Doctors were available, we jumped on it,” Sandquist said.

Held at Fishers Central Green, 1 Municipal Dr., the Car and Art show debuted two years ago on the week before Spark!Fishers, alongside the farmers market, but this year it will be included in the festivities.

“We had 65 cars show up and great turnout from people coming to look at the cars,” Sandquist said. “It made sense to us to grow this event.”

The car count for this year’s event is expected to grow, there is room for 80 vehicles on the property. The car show will be paired with an arts focused display. The city is partnering with the Fishers Arts Council to put together the Arts crawl component.

“We’ll have a variety of artists on-site and food trucks,” Sandquist said.

Approximately 30 artists are expected to attend, including the featured artist Gary Dausch, who will bring his mobile 28-foot gallery. Dausch specializes in original art, limited edition prints and apparel.

The day unofficially begins with a farmers market held every Saturday during the summer at 6 Municipal Dr., from 8 a.m. to noon. Spark!Fishers events begin at 3 p.m.

“From 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. we’ll shut down the circle. We’ll have 150 vendors. There will be artist and artesian tents.

We’ll have a Ferris wheel out on 116th St. When you get to the top, you’ll be able to see down into the (under construction pedestrian) tunnel,” Sandquist said.

There will be three different musical stages, a kids zone and a teen zone.

At 6 p.m., the parade begins and proceeds from Lantern Road west along Municipal Drive and down the western edge of the Central Green before heading west on 116th Street and north on Holland Drive before ending at Ellipse Parkway.

“I’m a parade guy. I’ve always enjoyed the parade, even though every year that I’ve been a part of it it’s like 122 degrees outside, and I feel bad for the kids in the band with their uniforms on,” Fadness said. “The parade is a slice of Americana. It really is. Seeing everyone out, it’s just a fun time. I’ll probably be walking in the parade this year.

“I’ve been in the car before, but my family is so big now that they’d have to have some sort of larger vehicle, anyway, so I’ll be walking in the parade with the fire and police

chiefs.”

At 10 p.m., the fireworks begin. They will be launched from Holland Park and will be visible from the Central Green.

Holland Park will be unavailable for viewing because it will be closed and secured.

“I really love the fireworks show at the end of the night because it’s just this culmination of everything,” Sandquist said. “I don’t want to leave out everything that happened prior to that, but it is a cool sight to see everyone come together and have a true community feel to watch the fireworks.”

BOOKING A NATIONAL TOURING BAND Landing a national touring band like the Spin Doctors to perform at an event like Spark!Fishers is, as Fishers Parks and Recreation Director Sarah Sandquist put it, “tricky.”

“There’s a lot of factors that go into it,” Sandquist said. “Money is an important component of that. But also, you’re dealing with availability. You’re dealing with if they are willing to do a free show. A lot of times when we are dealing with a national artist, we are throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks.”

The process to book the Spin Doctors began in March. If an artist or band is on tour and playing in a nearby market, like Louisville or Chicago, then it is less expensive to bring them to Fishers because they are already nearby. Booking a national touring band for Fishers costs between $20,000 and $50,000.

I can’t hear you

Commentary by Terry Anker “What is wrong with people?” the widow exclaimed. “I am so disheartened right now.” A prequalified couple had agreed to purchase the home she’d shared with her departed husband but had entreated for a short-term lease to make the timing for their move a bit more convenient. The widow kindly agreed. The couple again asked for an extension of the closing date. This time, the reasons given seemed either too vague or entirely implausible. Still, the accommodating widow accommodated.

Naturally, as the newest closing date approached, the couple said they needed still more time.

With this, the widow pushed back, and the couple admitted that they had overshot their budget in the last few months and were now short about 20 percent of the capital needed. As the sob story unfolded, they asked the widow to let them pay her, over time, for the gap. Offended by her resistance, they felt entitled to remind her that she “must have” seen some insurance money. Since she, they assumed, had cash in her pocket, she had an ethical obligation to share some of it with them.

This story is all too common. Today’s general lack of empathy, coupled with a loss of any fear of social constraint, inevitably leads to grotesque self-centeredness. Many of us are confronted with those who say, and believe, that we are obligated to make their lives easier by making ours more difficult. “Getting even is not only justified,” they might argue, “it is a moral duty.” The problem with the summary change of thousands of years of human experience is that much of the way we live is good — and that not all change is. The law, the social contract and basic common sense are mostly right. Are there inequities? Probably.

Still, aren’t rules better than chaos?

Mine ears have heard the coming of the horror of old age … Yes, I know those aren’t the exact lyrics, but I’m a bit whack-a-doodle, friends. Thanks to some impressive wax build-up and subsequent ear infection, I’ve lost all hearing on my left side and about 50 percent on my right. And because said wax is rock solid, I’m having to “soften” it for four days with peroxide drops before it can be scraped clear. So, basically, I’ve been stumbling around in my own quiet little bubble, head titled at an awkward angle, constantly yelling “What?” to anyone and everyone.

My husband and relatively new hearing-aid wearer Doo finds this to be a hilarious moment of marital karma. “Now you know how it feels!” has become his annoying refrain. In my defense, I’ve always been sympathetic to Doo’s deafness, which he’s suffered since childhood. What frustrated me and why I teased him was that he refused to do anything about it, purely for vanity’s sake.

But admittedly, until this week, I hadn’t fully understood how debilitating and alienating not being able to hear is.

Bike rides, phone calls, watching TV and multiple-people conversations became real challenges that left me frustrated and overwhelmed. And the physical disorientation resulted in more stubbed toes and bruised thighs than when I was nine-months pregnant. With twins.

The point is, I’ve had a glimpse into my geriatric future, and I don’t like it.

I’ve come to terms with my deteriorating eyesight; I even look good with my 1.50 purple readers. But I’m not ready to yield mine ears to the horrors of old age.

A shell of my pet-loving self Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Several evenings a week, the neighbors on our cul-de-sac gather with their dogs in the driveway across the street HUMOR from us. There is Max, Pace, Gus, Louie, Ella, Dain and Lucy.

These are the dogs’ names. I’m very bad with human names, but I know which dog belongs to whom. Occasionally, the group includes children and visiting grandchildren.

Mary Ellen and I have no grandchildren and we no longer have a dog, but we do have a cat (Mary Ellen’s, really) who would not do well in these otherwise civilized gatherings.

I needed a pet of my own. I called my friends Marty and John in New Palestine. Marty is a turtle whisperer who has been rehabbing turtles and enjoying them as pets for 20 years. Because she often relocates rescued turtles, Marty happily provided me with three red-eared sliders who would soon reside in the pond a few hundred yards from our house. I named them Stan, Ollie and Baby Huey. I carefully loaded them into the car and headed home.

The neighbor kids met me at the water’s edge, giggling with delight (you can see a short video on my Facebook page).

Once a day (sometimes twice) … OK, occasionally three times, I visit my turtles and spread joy (or whatever is in that can of food Marty gave me) across the pond. Redeared sliders don’t need to surface for air very often, which means that I sometimes

have to stand on the shore for 90 minutes scanning the water to confirm that all three of my adoptees are OK. I eagerly wait for each head to pop up, then toss more food in that direction. I whistle when I feed them, hoping they will connect my signal with their nourishment. The neighbors can probably see me from their deck, and I’m sure it appears to them like I am looking at my reflection in the water and then whistling at the image. Not true. I am retired from TV and am no longer that narcissistic.

I’m excited about another new addition to my family. While driving home the other day, I saw in the road a turtle about the size of a dinner plate, and he was clearly in danger of being – DICK WOLFSIE squashed by the next oncoming vehicle. I swerved onto a side street, dashed from my car, scooped him up and deposited him on my front seat. I named him Buster, after my favorite silent star, Buster Keaton. I don’t think he’ll ever say much.

Now, I have four new pets. Of course, turtles cannot join us for our evening puppy parties, but I know they are happy swimming in the pond behind our neighbors’ house. I forget our neighbors’ names, but their dog’s name is Chewy.

In a world where employees are beginning to work from home and coffee shops are becoming the next hot NEW BIZ thing, Westfield residents Liz and Adam Duvall are embracing the best of both worlds.

The Duvalls co-own Viewpoint Roasters, a small-batch, home-based coffee roaster.

“Basically what that means is, we essentially roast to order,” Liz said. “When someone places an order with us online, it’s not coming from a stock of coffee. We are making their order right then and we do it out of our garage.” The Duvalls set up a workshop in their garage during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We seemed to buy into what a lot of other people did as well when they were at home and thought, ‘We’ve got time,’” Liz said. “My husband has been roasting coffee for a few years for family and close friends, and it was a fun hobby.”

The Duvalls do not add oils or additives to the coffee, and the beans they use are single-origin.

“I think a lot of people don’t know that coffee doesn’t just come off the earth roasted. It is actually surprising the amount of people who don’t realize you take coffee in an undrinkable state and it comes in a green form,” Liz said.

Viewpoint Roasters recently conducted a promotion called Community Coffee, in which proceeds benefitted a local nonprofit, and 5-year-old Graham Duvall designed the bags.

Liz said the company is family oriented and recently conducted a promotion called Community Coffee, with proceeds from coffee purchases donated to local nonprofits.

All the coffee bags were designed by the Duvalls’ 5-year-old son, Graham.

“So, there were some very unique ones, some very artsy ones,” Liz said with a laugh. “We are excited to be a part of the community. We’ve met a lot of really great small business owners, and we are excited to just get more into the community as we live here longer and longer.”

Zionsville sisters share stage in ‘Sound of Music’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Performing as one of the von Trapp children in “The Sound of Music” has a true family feel for Claire Kauffman.

“One of my favorite things about this musical is THEATER getting to be a part of the von Trapp family,” Claire said. “Being one out of the seven siblings and getting to be in this with my sister, Cynthia, is not only fun on stage but also off stage. Playing Louisa is so different than any other role I have played, and her sneaky and upbeat personality is so fun to experiment with, too.”

Cynthia Kauffman plays Liesl in the Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre production of “The Sound of Music,” which will run from June 24 to Aug. 15.

Cynthia graduated from Zionsville Community High School in 2019 and is majoring in music theater at Indiana University. Claire will be a ZCHS freshman in the fall.

“This role will for sure be one that I will always look back on,” Claire said. “I’m not sure when I will get to be in another show with my sister. Playing Louisa in such a well-known show, with Cynthia and other friends in the cast, will be very memorable for me.”

Claire said the main challenge of playing Louisa is being part of the big family.

“The von Trapp children have different personalities, and finding those things that make Louisa stand out is a part of the whole acting process,” Claire said. “Along with making Louisa her own unique character, I take on different harmonies in multiple songs. One of the trickiest songs for me has been ‘The Sound of Music.’ Perfecting those harmonies will make the song sound as best as it can.”

Claire’s favorite number is “The Lonely Goatherd.”

“I love the fun, uptempo movements,” Claire said. “You really get a glimpse of how enjoyable it is to be on stage. Everything about the number is all about storytelling, and I

think that makes it exciting to perform and watch.”

This is the first time either sister has appeared in the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.

“This is a dream role, so getting to play Liesl has been such a joy so far,” Cynthia said. “What I love about ‘The Sound of Music’ is the fact that it is such a classic and fun for all ages. I love Liesl’s free spirit and her confidence as a young woman and getting to portray that on stage.”

Cynthia said her favorite numbers are “Sixteen going on Seventeen” and “So Long, Farewell.”

“I have loved being able to do some partner dancing but also dancing with the von Trapp children,” she said. “I also enjoy learning the choreography to these iconic numbers.”

Cynthia said one challenge she faces playing Liesl is, although she is mature, she is still a child.

“Being able to find small moments where her naive and adolescent instincts can shine through is important to the story,” Cynthia said.

Cynthia has had a few opportunities to act since the COVID-19 pandemic caused a shutdown in March 2020.

“Since I am a performance major in college, it is pretty much my life,” Cynthia said.

“Over the last year, I have had small performing opportunities at school, but being back in a real theater and on a stage makes me happier than ever.”

Clare got the opportunity to perform in a Zionsville Middle School play earlier this year.

“Life feels pretty boring without live theater,” Claire said. “When something you usually do every day gets canceled, it makes you realize how important it is. I got back in the mode of performing back in March when I got to start rehearsals for my school musical, ‘Singin’ in the Rain.’

“Playing Lina Lamont was a great way to get back in the swing of things.”

Documenting expletive of a year

By any measure, 2020 was a wretched year for the entire world. But even before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down FILM the globe, the business climate for two local artists soured at the dawn of that accursed year.

The pandemic only made things worse for Luke Crawley and Quincy Owens, who operate the artist collective Owens+Crawley in Indianapolis, where they create public art and gallery-based work on commission.

“Our year (2020) basically started off by getting an email in February stating that our second-biggest project to date in North Carolina, that we had been working on for over a year, was flat-out canceled because they found asbestos in the soil at the park where the artwork was going,” said Crawley, a part-time artist and full-time teacher at University High School in Carmel. “That project was basically our year to that point, and we had nothing lined up. We had the rug pulled out from under us.

“Then, of course, the shutdown happened in March, and everything slowed down on

other smaller projects or potential jobs we had in the works. It was very uncertain for us.”

Fortunately for Crawley, a Fishers resident, and Owens, an Indianapolis resident and full-time artist at the Harrison Center for the Arts, their prospects brightened in May 2020 with a couple of lucrative projects in Washington, D.C. Still, the overall year was less than cheerful, which inspired them to create and sell a popular holiday ornament with the inscription “F*** 2020,” which, in turn, captured the attention of Paul Nethercott, an award-winning independent filmmaker who is creating a short documentary by the same name.

Nethercott’s film, which he plans to release before the end of the year, explores Crawley and Owens’ challenges, including personal struggles and anxiety over canceled events and delayed projects, during 2020. A Kickstarter for the film is under way through June 29. The fundraising goal is $25,000.

Big Hoffa’s Smokehouse

Main St., Westfield What to get: Full rack of ribs Price: $20.99 Anna’s take: If you haven’t visited Big Hoffa’s Smokehouse since it expanded into 8,000 square feet of space, you need to put it on your to-do list ASAP. I grew up in Westfield, and until recently, Big Hoffa’s occupied a small space on the south side of the property on Ind. 32. But owner Adam Hoffman recently expanded into the rest of the building, and now Big Hoffa’s space matches its taste — big.

I sampled several items, and my favorite thing about Big Hoffa’s (other than the barbecue) is the incredibly large menu that offers more than just barbecue. I tried The Amendment ($9.99), which is beef brisket on a bed of jasmine rice with teriyaki glaze, homemade giardiniera (which has 37 ingredients!), cilantro, onions and spicy mayo.

I also tried The Hoffinator ($9.79), one of

Big Hoffa’s biggest sellers, which are fries loaded with macaroni and cheese, baked beans, pulled pork, barbecue sauce and ranch. I tried two sandwiches — the Butcher’s Bill ($8.49) with chicken, buffalo and ranch sauce, macaroni and cheese and fries on a garlic butter bun — and the Buccaneer ($8.49), Hoffa’s flagship sandwich with pork, coleslaw, fries and ranch on a garlic butter bun. I also tried sides of fries and macaroni and cheese, brisket and ribs. My favorite item was probably the ribs. Even as someone who’s not much of a dry rub person (I prefer saucy wings and barbecue), I completely bypassed the barbecue sauce and ate the ribs with no toppings, they were that delicious. For a beverage, be sure to try the sassafras sweet tea, which has a mild root beer flavor.

Touring Madison’s historic Lanier Mansion Commentary by Don Knebel A visit to the Lanier Mansion in Madison, Ind., provides an opportunity both to see one of the nation’s finest Greek TRAVEL Revival homes and to learn about a Hoosier hero.

In 1817, 17-year-old James Lanier moved with his family to Madison. Three years later, he opened a law office and soon became clerk of the Indiana General Assembly. By the 1830s, because of successful investments in Indiana’s first railroad, he was among Indiana’s wealthiest citizens.

In 1840, Lanier engaged a Madison architect to design a house for him on a 10-acre site overlooking the Ohio River. When completed in 1844, the exterior of the brick house, encompassing about 13,500 square feet, featured a riverside portico with four fluted Corinthian columns and dentiled entablatures containing circular windows. The three-story interior included a curved wall, Ionic columns separating two first-floor parlors and a spiral staircase extending toward a skylight in the cupola. Lanier moved to New York in 1851 to manage an investment bank he founded, but he did not forget Indi-

The appearance of the house and grounds reflects significant work in the 1990s to restore them to their original appearance and grandeur. The carpets and wallpaper are reproductions of those available in 1844.

The formal gardens, added by James’ son Alexander, were restored based on an 1876 lithograph of the site.
