Super lawyer serves community

By Renee Larr • news@currentinfishers.com Bryan Babb was recently appointed by Fishers’ Mayor Scott Fadness to serve as vice president of the Fishers Police Merit Commission in addition city to being appointed president of the Fishers Fire and Emergency Board. Babb is a Fishers resident and is a partner at Bose McKinney and Evans Law Firm.

“The boards are being created on account of Fishers becoming a city,” said Babb.

The boards are relatively new to Fishers and will handle disciplinary measures needed for firefighter and police officers.

“The police chief has the authority to issue disciplinary measures. It doesn’t happen very often but when it does the chief is authorized to enact disciplinary measures up to 40 hours of unpaid leave.

Anything above that the board handles. The case is made as to why a police officer should be disciplined.

The officer presents his side of the case and then we make a decision based on the recommended disciplinary measure by the police chief,” said Babb.

Babb also serves on the Fishers Fire and Emergency Services Merit Board. The two boards are similar with one exception. The FFAESMB not only handles disciplinary situations but also consider promotion and hiring issues.

For the last three years Babb has been named a “Super Lawyer” by Super Lawyers a rating service of lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and personal achievement. Only 5 percent of the lawyers in the state of Indiana receive that honor. He was listed in the top 50 lawyers in the state.

Babb has also served in the U. S. Military. During his time at Carmel High School Babb was recruited to play football at West Point the U. S. Military Academy.

“After I graduated from West Point I served my 5 years in the military. I went to officer basic course and then I was headed to Desert Storm but my orders were directed to go to the Defense Language Institute in California to study German for a year.

In addition to his career accolades and military service Babb is also a cancer survivor. He was diagnosed at the age of 21 with testicular cancer.

“I was “a starter” at Army at the time. I was the starting quarterback for them and then I found out I had testicular cancer. I spent the next couple of months at Walter Reed.

They got it early and I ended up beating it. It was a scary time for sure,” said Babb.

Babb’s experience with cancer led to his involvement in cancer charities. He is on the Heroes Foundation whose mission is to support cancer patients through support, education and awareness programs. Babb led a cycling team called Spin4Heroes to raise over $5,000 for cancer patients in Indiana.

Dickey resigning – The City of Fishers has announced that Tom Dickey, the director of community development, is leaving the organization to rejoin the private sector.

Dickey has accepted the managing director of real estate position with Hageman Group, a private development group. He will continue as a consultant with the City of Fishers on matters of economic development and redevelopment.

Stewards of Children – Parents and adults who work with children can learn how to prevent child sexual abuse by registering for Stewards of Children. This program teaches adults how to prevent, recognize and react to child sexual abuse. Bouncing for a cause

By Renee Larr • news@ycurrentinfishers.com On June 15 the Indiana Blood Center and the Tyler Genneken Foundation will host the fourth-annual Tyler Genneken charity Be the Match Bounce Bash and Dodgeball Tournament. The event will take place at Skyzone in Fishers at 5 p.m.

Tyler Genneken was diagnosed with Acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2006 and required a bone-marrow transplant. Although there was no donor match for Genneken his dream was to get 10,000 people signed up for the BTM bone marrow donor registry.

Proceeds from the event go toward getting people signed up for the registry.

“This is the 4th annual event that we’ve had to raise money to sign people up for the registry. For every person that signs up it costs $100 to get them on the registry,” said Liza Angelicchio, Indiana Blood Center intern and cancer survivor.

Angelicchio was diagnosed in December 2012 with the same cancer as Genneken. She found a non-familial match through BTM. “I was diagnosed before I finished college so I needed one class and an internship to

finish college. Since I needed a bone marrow transplant I figured Be the Match would be an awesome experience,” said Angelicchio.

According to BTM, more than 68,000 people have received transplants through their fundraising efforts. 70 percent of patients do not have a bone marrow match within their family which is why the registry is so important.

The event is a dodgeball tournament and bounce-a-thon. Each dodgeball team has a minimum of eight players. The cost to register a team is $600. Participants must be at least 15 years old. Each bounce-a-thon team is a minimum of four players. The cost to register a team is $30 with no age minimum.

Participants can register in advance through the Be the Match Foundation or they can register when they arrive at the event.

Bluebridge creates app for Fishers

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com A new mobile application has been developed in Fishers for residents or visitors mobile to find places to eat, to do business, find lodging and more. There is an event calendar, dining and shopping directories and a deals section where users can save money at local restaurants and businesses.

Bluebridge, located in Fishers, created the Nickel Plate app. Although Bluebridge is in Fishers, Santiago and their local apps serve Grand Park, Westfield, Fishers, Zionsville and Hamilton County, they are also on a large, worldly scale where apps can cover South Africa, Gatlinburg, Tenn. and Kissimmee, Fla. “We’re incredibly thrilled to be here in Fishers,” Santiago Jaramillo, the CEO and founder of Bluebridge, stated.

Bad worker habits your fault Commentary by CJ McClanahan His name is David and for the last three years he has shown up to work workplace 15 minutes late every single day. Her name is Sharon and she has neglected to learn how to use the new inventory software since it was first purchased in 2011. Their coworker, Brian refuses to turn in his weekly reports on time.

If you have a leadership role in a company, you have undoubtedly run across a David, Sharon or Brian at some point. In fact, chances are you walk past one every day when you come into the office.

Are you ready for the worst news? It’s probably your fault.

There’s a certain portion of the workforce (about 20 percent) that has an innate sense for what they need to do to make themselves and their company more successful. These individuals become successful entrepreneurs and members of the executive team.

Then, there’s everyone else.

The majority of these people are honest, hardworking and do whatever it takes to meet expectations. They are an extremely important part of the workforce. Without this 80 percent,

the world would be filled with a bunch of Type-A overachievers who are all fighting to be the CEO. Another interesting characteristic of the 80 percent is that (for the most part) they will do whatever is asked of them. If you ask them to follow up with all outstanding prospects, they will make the calls. If you need the financial statements completed by the 15th of each month, just let them know. In other words, they will strive to meet expectations.

If this simple formula (tell the 80 percent what to do and it gets done) is true, then why in the world does so much fall through the cracks?

There are three reasons why many leaders complain to me that it’s hard to find “good employees”. The first, and most often referred to as “the real reason” is that the 80 percent is lazy, doesn’t listen and is not bright enough to add value in today’s complex workforce. While I do believe these people exist, I think it’s a very small percentage.

City Government Academy announced the graduation of more than 20 individuals. Each was called forward to accept his or her diploma and was congratulated by Fishers Mayor Scott Why it matters: City Government Academy is an eight-week course that allows residents of Fishers to become “students” and examine the inner workings of city government. Students will hear from staff, tour city facilities and engage in the collaborative city governing process.

From cleaning up neighborhoods to helping physically limited residents with their yard-work projects to disposing of hazardous materials, Keep Fishers Beautiful does exactly what the name entails.

A request to approve a resolution of the economic development agreement with Sun King Brewing Co. This comes in regards to the Brewery’s intent to develop a full-scale brewery within the city.

Why it matters: Sun King originally stated in a previous economic development agreement that it would be breaking ground for its new brewery in 2015 and to be completed by 2016, but legislative issues were encountered. The EDA has been revised to change the dates of the development breaking ground in 2017 and being completed by 2018.

Question: “On a recent TV show, one of the characters said, ‘We’re in danger. We’re not safe. None of us are.’ My grammar guy schooling tells me this is so wrong. It should be, ‘We’re not safe. None of us is.’ In other words, ‘Not one of us is safe.’ My ear tells me, though, that ‘are’ is the way to go. What’s your take on it? Maybe I’m really asking two questions: What is the ‘correct’ way and what would Grammar Guy say in everyday speech?” – (Richard Dickinson) Answer: “None” is a tricky one, because many of us learned an incorrect rule about it in school.

Does “none” always take a singular pronoun?

It’s not uncommon to find people think so. Often they learned that “none” means “no one,” and thus is singular. While that’s true, it’s not the whole story.

“It is sometimes held that none can take only a singular verb, never a plural verb: ‘none of them is coming tonight,’ rather than ‘none of them are coming tonight.”

“None” can also mean “not any” – which would take a plural verb. I’ll let the Oxford Dictionaries break down the issue: “It is sometimes held that none can take only a singular verb, never a plural verb: ‘none of them is coming tonight,’ rather than ‘none of them are coming tonight.’ There is little justification, historical or grammatical, for this view.

None is descended from Old English ‘nān,’ meaning ‘not one,’ and has been used for around a thousand years with both a singular and a plural verb, depending on the context and the emphasis needed.”

It’s all about context, you see. In your sentence above, “none” would be fine to use as a plural pronoun, as it clearly refers back to the “we” used in the two prior sentences. You could also use it as a singular pronoun to mean “Not one of us is safe.” In this case there’s some ambiguity. But that’s OK. Thanks for writing in. Please keep those questions coming!

Stay-at-home mom completes goal of higher education

Lucas to take a chance on nursing. She decided to work toward her associate of science in nursing degree.

“Seeing her confidence grow when I first met her on the career services side to when she started nursing school … she just kind of flourished and blossomed in this program,” said Sproull.

Lucas is able to work toward her degree while simultaneously working in the field. Ivy Tech ASN students are allowed to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination which allows them to start working as a registered nurse. Students can then work toward obtaining their Bachelor of Science in degree.

Studying, working and raising kids all at once proved to be a little more difficult than Lucas realized.

“I had always been able to do everything myself and all of the sudden I really had to lean on my family and friends to help pick up the slack. There were a lot of things I didn’t have as much time to do like volunteer at the boys’ school,” said Lucas.

Even with the stress of school and family life Lucas maintained a positive attitude which she credits to her support system.

Attending college is an exciting-yet-stressful time in any student’s life. For more than 18 years, Fishers resident Robin Lucas was a stay-at-home mom focused cover story on raising her three sons. While helping her oldest son, Steven, with his college applications Lucas realized a lifelong dream – to attend college and receive her degree.

“I like to joke around and say I was a stay-at-home mom but my contract was going to come to an end when there weren’t any kids to stay at home with anymore,” said Lucas.

Lucas married young and her priority became her growing family.

“The unique thing with Robin is this is her first degree. She went to college and did not finish her first time around. She ended up dropping out and starting a family,” said Amy Sproull, assistant director of career services for the nursing program at Ivy Tech.

Lucas did her research on colleges and degree programs. She had always wanted to be a nurse but assumed she couldn’t do it so she chose another route.

“She started out pursuing healthcare and surgery tech. She didn’t think she would be able to do nursing. She just wasn’t confident enough,” said Sproull.

“When I was in middle school and high school I volunteered as a candy striper and I always thought the nurses were the ones who were so friendly and to me the heart of the hospital. I always respected that,” said Lucas.

My husband smiled and said, “You know ‘I always thought you should be a nurse but I just knew I had to wait for you to come around to it’. He has always been very supportive and he’s always been one of my best cheerleaders,” said Lucas.

Lucas would love to become a labor and delivery nurse. On her first day of clinicals for labor and delivery she helped deliver a baby.

“That was one of the most miraculous and wonderful things I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I knew as soon as that happened I was hooked,” said Lucas.

As a parent Lucas hopes her boys take something away from her inspiring story.

“I guess I would want them to learn that along the way you might make some mistakes and you might have some hurdles to jump through but just focus on what you really want and keep working toward that. Sometimes it may not happen overnight and it may take 20 years to get there but keep working on it. You’ll get there if you keep your eyes set on the goal,” said Lucas.

Favorite activity to do in spare time: Being a full-time nursing student, what little spare time I have, I enjoy spending time with my family and catching up with friends over an extra long coffee date.

Favorite local restaurant: Bento Cafe Something interesting that no one would know about you? I’m a WWII and the Tudor’s history buff. As well, as making jewelry by metalsmithing.

Favorite vacation spot: Destin, Fla.

Well, there you are, Mr. Candidate! No sooner do we accuse Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) of losing his bluster (Current, May 12) than does he release this gem about President Barack Obama (D-White House) and trade initiatives: “I’ve said that the only way I would give fasttrack trade authority to a president was if it was a president that could actually … negotiate well, and after watching the way this president has negotiated with folks in Iran, I have real concerns about giving this president the ability to negotiate on his own.” As do we.

With regard to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Donald Trump (R-You Name It), in a joint statement with Americans for Limited Government, offered: “Instead of fast-tracking TPP, Congress should pass legislation that holds China and Japan accountable for currency manipulation.”

The U.S. Senate was scheduled to vote last week to advance the legislation. Former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-Ark.), with whom we don’t side on much, scored points with us on this: “We don’t create good jobs for Americans by entering into unbalanced trade deals that forego congressional scrutiny, and then looking the other way as the law is ignored so that we can import low-wage labor, undercut American workers, and drive wages lower than the Dead Sea.” Are the Republicans showing some fire? Yes. Will it last? We doubt it. Listen to Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-La.): “I am not for giving more authority to a president who ignores the Constitution, the separation of powers, and will of the American people. This particular President must not be given any more power to do anything else to harm this country. He cannot be trusted.” Really. Can anyone?

Status cities

We humans care about status. A lot.

Archeologist excavating ancient Sumerian (centuries before Christ) communities, discovered necklaces of sea shells harvested hundreds of miles from the graves. It points to the likelihood that commerce has been with us from the very foundations of society – yes. But too, it indicates the desirability of prestige from our earliest civilized moments.

While some of us have become highly adept at concealing it, one would be hardpressed to find any among us who is immune to its allure. Sure, not everyone covets a red sports car or diamond ring of epic proportions; but if the consideration of status is imagined beyond the limits of precious metals, our obsession with it becomes clearer.

Some find the performance of our children to be status enhancing (perhaps extinguishing). Others care deeply about personal command of Holy Scripture. Oth-

ers still find appearance to be the currency of their own relative standing.

The last few years have been tough on California. Yet friends from certain communities cling to an almost antithetical boastful superiority. Can it be that the city of our residency is just another status tool? Are you really smarter and better if your zip code includes the Silicon Valley? And, does keeping Portland weird and Austin interesting actually point to an underlying desire toward superior status rather than the stated open-mindedness?

“If you are not from my town, you cannot be as cool as me.” Maybe. Or, maybe not.

Even as we are wisely investing in our own communities, we should be reminded – is our objective to achieve a better quality of life or to grab a little more status?

Fellow moms of this planet, our day has come and gone. We must wait a whole ‘nother year to feel loved and appreciated, to receive ceramic pencil holders humor and pasta necklaces and to earn an eight-hour reprieve from dishes and laundry. This most recent Mother’s Day differed dramatically from my first, when morning sickness kept me close to cold tiled floors, although interestingly, the same kid is to blame! Let’s pause to ponder the evolution of your favorite columnist’s Mother’s Days, shall we?

In the first few years, I can’t say I looked forward to the second Sunday in May. I hadn’t yet learned how to articulate my expectations, and more often than not ended up covered in vomit or baby poop as I cried myself to sleep. No flowers, no shopping, no mimosas. MD was just like any other day with four small children: mind-numbing, lonely and exhausting.

Shortly into 2005, realization dawned. All I needed to do was leave the house and not return until nightfall. My husband Doo knew how to open a can of Spagettios, change a diaper and dial 911; I was a moot point! So my annual sojourn morphed into a twelveto-fourteen hour guilt-free “Me Spree,” that included malls, movies, manicures and McDonald’s. And on the two occasions when illness or family commitments hijacked my “moment,” I simply called a “redo.” If I only get one day, dammit, it will happen, come hell or high fever.

Over the last few years however, I’ve felt the urge to spend Mother’s Day closer to home. I still go to brunch with friends and do a little bargain hunting, but I’m usually back before dinner to enjoy mandatory “Be Nice to Mom” time with my minions. And even though this year didn’t quite play out as I’d hoped – receiving a call in Stein Mart from your newly-licensed driver after he’s caused a fender-bender dampens the mood somewhat – I did appreciate the opportunity to pamper myself while it lasted.

Here’s wishing you a belated Happy Mother’s Day. [Seriously, he’d had his license for four days!] Peace out.

Here’s what the catalog says: “The Rubber Duckie has a bulbous aquatic form … with a bouncing buoyancy that compels wanton water play.” (That’s a nightmare for writing teachers.)

The Fish-Catching RC Boat is for the absolute laziest person in your life. The pint-sized toy fishes for you. It trolls the lake, sets the hook when the fish strikes and then brings the fish back to shore. It’s $69.95, and you can get a sign to put on your front door: Home fishing.

The Best Talking Scale speaks English, Spanish, Greek and Croatian – and the scale is very accurate. However, it only knows one joke: “One at a time, please,” which apparently is new material in Croatia.

Our takes on steak: Best of the Northside

While many places restaurants have the word “steakhouse” in their name as an obvious indication of what they’re trying to advocate, there are places that sometimes might get overlooked.

Certainly there is a collection of names that come to mind in Indianapolis and the surrounding area when one thinks of the best steakhouse in town, but for those who wish to venture from the “standard” in the steak game, consider these choices for your next steak.

With the bold declaration of being “Carmel’s only Prime steak house,” Prime 47 is a force to be reckoned with. What sets it apart from its Indianapolis and Cincinnati locations is that it’s locally owned and operated, separate from the aforementioned. This gives it a unique

As for the steak, my recommendation is the dry-aged Kansas City strip, cooked to your liking. The dry-aged process offers exceptional flavor boosting the tenderness and texture of the meat. Lightly seasoned with salt, pepper and a touch of garlic and thyme, this is a great steak. Try it by itself or with one of Prime’s decadent toppings.

While some readers may recall Murphy’s Steakhouse, now Murphy’s @ Flynn’s is off Allisonville Road in Indianapolis, and in Fishers is Murphy’s Pubhouse. A younger brother of the Indy location, the pubhouse is a laid-back bistro that sports similar style family owned values as Murphy’s @ Flynn’s, but in a relaxed pub atmosphere. With three generations of family in the restaurant business, Murphy’s Pubhouse owner/manager Ryan Stonebraker has a simple philosophy: it’s all about satisfying the customer.

“We just treat everybody right and that comes back to helping us in the end,” Stonebraker said.

My recommendation would be the filet, Oscar style. That’s a juicy filet mignon topped with a delicious crab cake, drizzled in a Chardonnay cream sauce. It truly compliments the steak.

Pair that with a baked potato and you’re set.

Secluded on the back roads of Zionsville you’ll find something of a gem in the form of a farm-to-table style restaurant.

Located at the headquarters of Trader’s Point Creamery is The Loft. What makes this place so special is its adamant approach to providing customers with the most organic foods that you can get your hands on.

Heading the kitchen is Brandon Canfield, a true culinary inspiration that goes out of his way to ensure nothing is wasted.

The menu varies by availability, but when in stock the filet is a sure win. During my visit I was served the pan-roasted, grass-fed strip loin. The grass-fed beef provides a steak experience unlike anything I’ve ever encountered. The natural flavors weren’t flooded by fat, as found in a standard steak.

Delicious.

Many connoisseurs of steak probably have heard of the famed St. Elmo’s steakhouse downtown. And while some may say it tops the chart, it’s more contemporary counterpart, Harry and Izzy’s on 86th Street near Clearwater, deserves just as much respect as its upscale equal.

Heading the kitchen at both St. Elmo’s and Harry and Izzy’s is executive chef Dave Foegley. Sourcing its beef out of Illinois, Foegley ensures that only the best beef they can acquire makes it to the table.

“We specify a certain grade and that’s why we set the bar where it’s at. You can buy an inexpensive cut of meat and you’re going to know when you bite into it.”

For Foegley’s New York strip, it is simply seared with a peppercorn crust, resting on Izzy sauce, leaving few distractions for a hungry patron’s palate.

Grilled Eggplant with Caramelized Onion and Fennel Ingredients: 1 (1 1/4-pound) eggplant (about 4-inch diameter), peeled, Cooking spray, 1/4 teaspoon salt, divided, 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided, 2 3/4 cups chopped fennel bulb (about 1 large bulb), 2 cups finely chopped yellow onion, 2 cups trimmed arugula, 1 teaspoon white balsamic vinegar, 1 teaspoon extravirgin olive oil, 1 cup quartered cherry tomatoes, 1/2 cup (2 ounces) crumbled goat cheese, 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil, 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme Directions: Prepare grill to medium heat. Cut eggplant crosswise into eight (1/2-inch-thick) slices. Lightly coat both sides of eggplant slices with cooking spray; sprinkle with 1/8 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Place on a grill rack coated with cooking spray; grill seven minutes on each side or until browned. Set eggplant slices aside. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Coat pan with cooking spray. Add fennel and onion; sauté eight minutes or until vegetables are tender and lightly browned. Combine remaining 1/8 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon pepper, arugula, vinegar and oil in a medium bowl; toss gently to coat. Divide arugula mixture evenly among eight appetizer plates; top each serving with one eggplant slice. Arrange about 1/3 cup fennel mixture on each eggplant slice; top with 2 tablespoons tomatoes and 1 tablespoon cheese. Sprinkle the chopped basil and thyme evenly over cheese.

Youth America Grand Prix will bring an interesting mix of professional dancers and young dancers in training to the Tarkington on May 31.

The program, “The Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow,” begins at 7 p.m.

One of Carmel’s own, Connor Hamilton, 12, will be on stage amongst other young and professional dancers. She will perform her Talisman at the Gala variation.

One of Hamilton’s past teachers, Fabrice Calmels, will be one of the professional dancers on the stage. Calmels is a part of the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago. Hamilton said she is looking forward to seeing him again and dancing on the same stage.

“I’ve been working on it for a month now and have a few weeks left to rehearse,” Hamilton said. “I really like performing in all the shows and performing in front of people.”

Hamilton has been dancing since she was two, so being on stage is nothing new to her.

Summer options for disabled kids

As summer quickly approaches many parents begin making summer plans for camps, academic enrichment and relaxation. programs Parents of children with disabilities can often struggle to find what is available for their child and sometimes feel like they don’t have many choices.

For summer academics, parents need to be aware of Extended School Year options through their child’s public school. Extended School Year is a legal requirement under the special education laws including Article 7 and IDEA. Extended School Year is different than summer school. If your child has a history of regression then this may be a necessary component of your summer plans. Parents need to be clear at their child’s IEP meeting this spring that their child does need summer services based on their child’s needs and history. Summer services can be specifically tailored to what that child needs and parents should not be afraid to ask for these necessary services.

There are also a variety of centers throughout Indianapolis and Carmel that provide

summer day programming for children with autism or other challenges. For instance the Applied Behavior Center in Carmel offers part time to full time summer programming that may be covered by your insurance for children with autism. The Dyslexia Institute of Indiana located in Indianapolis offers some fantastic camps for students struggling with dyslexia or other learning disabilities, and offer day programs to teen camps. Noble of Indiana offers Day Camps for children with and without disabilities. Easter Seals Summer camp offers a variety of day programming options in our area as well. For children with asthma Happy Hollow Child’s Camp sponsors a weeklong program this summer.

It is not too late to get started to make this summer a wonderful and full one.

Local home sales up 8.9% Commentary by Jim Litten With 2,912 pended sales in April in Central Indiana, overall year-to-date home sales are up 8.9 percent compared real estate to this time period last year, according to statistics compiled by F.C. Tucker Company. On a monthly basis, April 2015 pended home sales rose 0.2 percent compared to April 2014, a modest increase of six homes sold in the nine counties that F.C. Tucker tracks.

In Hamilton County, pended home sales are up 9.5 percent to 2,228 homes from 2,035 homes for the first four months of this year compared to the same time period last year.

• Home sales in the Fishers/Geist area have slipped. Last month, 216 homes pended, a decrease of 10 homes compared to April 2014.

• Year-to-date home prices in the Fishers/ Geist market continue to rise. The average price increased 2 percent to $253,198 from $248,177 last year.

• Of the pended home sales in the Fishers/Geist area last month, two were priced

$1,000,000 to $1,999,999; 10 were priced $500,000 to $999,999; 39 were priced $300,000 to $499,999; 67 were priced $200,000 to $299,999; 96 were priced $100,000 to $199,999; and two were priced at $99,999 or less.

• Homes in the Fishers/Geist area are selling at a steady pace. Last month, homes sold in 75 days on average, which is two days slower than April of last year.

• Inventory has decreased slightly in the Fishers/Geist market. In April 2015, 554 homes were on the market, tightening by 30 homes compared to April 2014.

We’re pleased the second quarter is off to a strong start compared to this time last year.

Inventory is tight and prices continue to rise – positive signs that our housing market is gaining momentum.

Jericho, in the Palestinian Territories, is best known as the city where Joshua “fit the battle” and the “walls come travel tumblin’ down.” Archaeologists cannot confirm that famous Biblical story, but did unearth a tower that held a world’s record for more than 5,000 years.

Located in the Judean Desert, Jericho is known as the “City of Palms” because of its lush landscape, watered by underground springs. Nomads attracted by the springs founded Jericho in about 10,000 B.C., creating one of the world’s first permanent settlements. By about 9,400 B.C. the residents of Jericho erected the world’s first city walls, protecting themselves from hungry thieves.

Archaeologists have uncovered more than 20 successive Jericho settlements, each built over the ruins of the one before, eventually creating a six-acre tell (mound) of dirt and rubble.

In the 1930s, John Garstang, an archaeologist excavating at Jericho, uncovered walls that had suddenly collapsed, which he believed demonstrated the truth of the Biblical account. In the 1950s, Dame Kathleen Kenyon, a British archaeologist, made a systematic

study of Jericho’s walls and concluded that they had fallen, perhaps as the result of an earthquake, hundreds of years before the presumed date of Joshua’s battle. She also concluded that Jericho was not occupied at the time of Joshua. Subsequent investigations have confirmed her conclusions, which few scholars now challenge.

During her excavations, Dame Kenyon found a cylindrical stone tower about 26 feet high and 28 feet in diameter just inside the oldest Jericho walls. The tower, incorporating an internal stairway, has been dated to at least 8,000 B.C., making it perhaps the world’s

oldest man-made structure. Archaeologists originally thought the tower had defensive or irrigation functions, but recent studies suggest it marked the summer solstice. Whatever its purpose, the Jericho tower remained the tallest man-made structure in the world until about 2650 B.C., when it was surpassed by the stepped pyramid of Djoser in Egypt.

Contemporary master bathroom with Lake Views Commentary by Larry Greene EXISTING BATHROOM: The owners of this 1975 home, located on Eagle Creek Reservoir, had lived with their out-of-date master bathroom for nearly four blueprint for years. “We bought this house for the improvement breathtaking views of the lake, but the inside didn’t reflect our style. The layout didn’t work. It felt dark, the shower was too small and the humidity and moisture from the lake was ruining our clothes.”
